Bookings are always recommended and necessary for tables of eight or more.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, Howard Vineyard here and don’t forget to book!

Adelaide Hills Farmers Market

Freshly made and homegrown produce on your doorstep every Saturday morning? Can’t get much better than that! The markets are built around the ethos of sustainability – where fresh, regional and seasonality are the buzzwords. It’s a vital community event, that puts consumers in front of the growers. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming; kids, fur babies, tourists – everyone is welcome. Live music, sizzling food stalls and the warm feeling that comes from supporting your local economy are just a few of the benefits of the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market .

Prancing Pony Brewery

It’s not all about the wine in the Adelaide Hills – Mount Barker is mad about the brews too. The craft brewing industry has taken off in South Australia and the Prancing Pony Brewshed experience lets you get up close and personal with the brewing process. Located just out of Mount Barker, at Totness, it’s a uniquely located drinking and dining space, smack bang in the middle of the commercial brewing ‘kitchen’. The sights and smells of malt hops and barley mashing and fermenting will leave you with a new appreciation for the beverage in your glass. You can book a guided tour and beer tasting experience, with matched regional platters and a beer appreciation tutorial to boot.

Jurlique Farm

Just outside Mount Barker, the aromas of drying herbs fill the air. As you get closer to the farmlands of Jurlique, the beautiful smells and sights assault your senses, wafting ever closer. This biodynamic farm offers a behind the scenes tour that allows you to learn about the origins of this iconic South Australian brand.

Founded in the Adelaide Hills in the 80s, Dr Jurgen Klein and his botanist wife Ulrike sought land to grow organic ingredients to create their natural skincare range. They found the perfect location in the Adelaide Hills, set up their farm and the brand Jurlique was born. Today the farm offers visitors the chance to get down and dirty with a farm tour. It’s a wonderful few hours spent on the farm discovering the processes of propagation, planting, growing and harvesting – the end result, a natural based skincare that is sold around the world. It’s an Adelaide institution and a fragrant afternoon adventure.

Totness Recreation Park

Part of the traditional lands of the Peramangk Aboriginal tribe, Totness Recreation Park  is the only reserve in Mount Barker that is dedicated to public recreation. It’s pleasantly untouched – you won’t find picnic tables or toilets here, so if you fancy a flamboyant picnic then this is the spot. The park is pet-friendly so bring your dog too, as long as they remain on their leash at all times. The track meanders through woodland, with a lovely boardwalk covering the marshier parts around the waterhole.

The park has an interesting history, and steam locomotives were once filled from this very dam, which was purpose-built in 1884. It’s a bit of a twitchers paradise too, with colourful locals including the elusive yellow-tailed black cockatoo, rosellas, kookaburras, and a diverse array of water birds. Gangly herons and cheeky pelicans live cheek by jowl with cormorants, competing for native and introduced fish – and local anglers.

Totness is a brilliant place to teach your kids about the importance of native plants and vegetation, amongst the established woodlands of stringy bark and blue gum.

Laratinga Wetland s

The Laratinga Wetlands are an award-winning initiative developed by the Mount Barker District Council in 1999. The beauty of the wetlands covers an interesting issue – the disposal of treated water from the burgeoning population of Mount Barker and other local communities. It’s an ecologically and environmentally friendly system that has benefitted the health of local creeks and water systems that have resulted in an innovative and beautiful wetland.

Laratinga means “Flooding Land Creek” in the local Peramangk dialect and is home to a diverse array of native flora and fauna. There are plenty of walking trails, bird hides and picnic and BBQ areas. The artificiality of this created wetland mimics a natural one – it’s convinced the locals anyway! There are long-necked tortoises, cockatoos, migrating birds and the vulnerable blue-billed duck – to name a few. The wetland trails join up with the Mount Barker Linear Trail if you desire a more extensive walk.

SteamRanger Heritage Railway

Not just for kiddies, this iconic South Australian train is a rich part of our heritage. The 2.5-hour train ride journeys around the Southern coast and takes you back into our earliest history. Travel past abandoned train stations, crisscrossing creeks and rivers that were vital to colonial South Australia. Passengers embark at Mount Barker train station, and travel through the Mount Lofty Ranges, Strathalbyn, Goolwa and Port Elliot, before pausing at Victor Harbor for a three-hour stop-over. It’s a beautiful and nostalgic way to see the Fleurieu Peninsula and harks back to an iconic mode of travel. The chugging of wheels over rutted tracks, that unique ‘railroad’ smell of steam and oil and the taste of the first whiff of salt-sea creates an experience that can’t be replicated.

The season begins on the first, third and fifth Sundays from May until November. Check out the timetable and season opening dates and plan your adventure by steamranger.

Auchendarroch House

This beautiful and sprawling Auchendarroch – meaning ‘holy place of the oaks’ in Scots – was built in Mount Barker in 1860 and expanded upon in 1878. It has had a long and interesting history, serving as wealthy family’s summer residence, a rest home, a RAAF hospital, and finally divided into rental properties. The Wallis family purchased the heritage listed building in 2000 with the aim of restoring the house to its former glory. Additionally, they were determined to create a cinema and entertainment complex that would benefit the community and bring the historical Auchendarroch House into modern use. This traditional home now houses Mount Barker Cinemas, The Oak & Iron Tavern, and operates as a venue available to hire for events and weddings.

Auchendarroch House is now a beautifully restored venue that all of the community benefits from – and it’s a wonderful look into the early history of colonial Mount Barker.

Get Swinging

This 18-hole golf course in Mount Barker provides residents and visitors with the chance to brush up on their swing game in a beautiful, green and tree-lined setting. It’s the perfect amount of exercise – the green providing a gentle walk (with golf carts available for hire) with plenty of water hazards to test your skills.

Once you’ve won your round of golf, you can head to the bistro for a light refreshment or full-on lunch. If your game is shot to bits you can stop for a restorative post-swing drink at the bar to drown your sorrows (much like your ball in the pond).

The bistro is open for lunch Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday. Book your next round at Aston Hills Golf Club and get into the swing of it.

Mount Barker Summit

An undulating drive through narrow roads leads visitors to the breathtaking surrounds of Mount Barker Summit . It requires a little bit of walking but doesn’t require an immense degree of fitness so most people can do this. The vista that awaits is spectacular and is the perfect spot for a quiet moment of contemplation. If you want to dazzle visitors this is a brilliant vantage point to see views out to sea, pastoral surrounds and Mount Lofty Ranges.

There is a short walking trail of around two kilometres that skirts around the summit, which takes about 40 minutes. The summit also has precious original native vegetation pre-dating the 1880s – a snapshot to a time before settlement.

Remember, this is by no means an exhaustive list – there is so much to do and natural green spaces for the kids (big and little) to run wild. Whether you’re pausing for the best coffee mid-shop, exploring the beautiful walking trails and parks or swotting up on local history – Mount Barker has something to offer to everyone.

Come up and visit Mount Barker and give our list a test drive – you won’t regret it. If you’re considering making the tree-change , you’ll find Mount Barker to be a very welcoming community.

Things to do in Mount Barker WA

The town has a variety of things to do for visitors. There are some excellent hikes nearby which offer spectacular views of the region. Wildflowers bloom in springtime and there are beautiful vineyards to visit as well as historic buildings.

Old Mount Barker Police Station

Built in 1868, the old Mount Barker Police Station is a type of building prominent in WA’s major towns with a unique appearance. It was built by convicts and is a good example of colonial architecture, in the Victorian Georgian style using local ironstone and timber shingles.

The original police station fell into disrepair, including the removal of the original flooring and verandah boards. The building has undergone major restoration since, including a new roof. Despite this, the property is a good example of shape, style, and finishes and is a reminder of the early European settlement.

Notice the security bars on the kitchen timber windows, which was used as a gaol for overnight prisoners.

Daniel O’Connell was the first constable at the station, who had come to Western Australia as an Enrolled Pensioner Guard in 1863.

In 1908, work began on a new station adjoining the original, retaining only the Coach-house and stables. A courtroom was added in 1919, with a third police station being built in 1957. The second station was then used as accommodation for the high school staff.

The Plantagenet Historical Society became involved in retaining and restoring the building when the first station was threatened with demolition. The building opened as a museum in 1971, displaying Mount Barker’s heritage.

There is a range of other buildings on the site, including a small timber-framed schoolhouse built by the district’s early settlers.

Fully guided tours allow visitors to see how people lived in the past and learn about the area’s history.

The museum is open on weekends and public holidays from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm or by appointment. Check their Facebook page for any closures. The cost was A$10 per adult.

St Werburgh’s Chapel

St Werburgh’s Chapel is temporarily closed – see Mount Barker ‘s site for up-to-date information.

St Werburgh’s Chapel is a beautiful building built in 1873 by George Edward Egerton-Warburton and is a fine example of Victorian Rural Gothic architecture. The walls are made from chopped straw and clay, and woodwork from local jarrah. It is believed to be the only surviving church in WA originally built on private property by the landowner.

The Chapel was the only place of worship in the Mount Barker area until 1900, and the cemetery is still used today.

St Werburgh’s Chapel is open to visitors interested in this historic structure.

Opening Hours: Daily from 10.30 am to 4 pm. Donations are greatly appreciated.

Access is via scenic gravel roads in the middle of agricultural land.

Mount Barker Post Office and Telegraph Station

Built in 1892 and in operation until the 1960s, the old post office building is now called ‘Mitchell House’ and houses the local art society and gallery.

George Temple-Poole designed this building.

Plantagenet Hotel

The pub was built between 1912 and 1914 and is still open today. Look for apple motifs on the verandah, celebrating the local apple industry.

The Railway Building

The Visitor Centre is housed in the old railway building, built in 1923. It is open daily and provides up-to-date information and maps.

Mount Barker Hill Lookout/TV Tower

For views over the rolling hills to the Stirling Ranges, the Porongorups, and even the coast on a clear day, head up to Mount Barker Hill Lookout.

The 184-metre-high telecommunications tower was once the tallest free-standing tower in the southern hemisphere. It opened in 1966 to provide ABC television to the area and now includes ABC FM Radio, SBS, GWN, WIN and Ten West Television, Hot FM and various telecommunication companies.

Mount Barker Murals

The murals throughout Mount Barker were part of the 2019 Mountains and Murals Festival. Sgt David “Johnno” Johnson, a local police station officer, had the idea and organised a collaboration between the Shire of Plantagenet, Mount Barker Police, Department of Justice, Plantagenet Arts Council, Great Southern Emerging Leaders Group and the town community.

Johnno is a part-time “Walldog” (a group of sign painters who meet once a year in the US to capture a town’s history in large-scale murals) and convinced them to come to Mount Barker.

Fifty artists from the local community, America, and Canada created five murals over a weekend, depicting the human and geographical history of the area. Inmates from Pardelup Prison Farm prepared the exteriors for painting and the Emerging Leaders Group had input into the theme of Reconciliation.

Mount Barker Playground

Wilson Park has play equipment and toilet facilities and is pet friendly. The shade shelters and tables are ideal for picnics, and kids love the red tractor and boat.

Wine Tasting

The Mount Barker wine region is known for its high-quality cool climate varieties (Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), with Riesling and Shiraz the specialties.

The Great Southern is one of Australia’s largest wine regions accounting for 37% of Western Australia’s wine production.

It all started way back in1859 when George Egerton-Warburton planted grapes on his property in St Werburgh and produced his first wines two years later.

Plantagenet Wines

Plantagenet Wines began in 1968 when Tony Smith planted trial vineyards of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon on his Bouverie property. The vineyard produced its first vintage in 1974, and the brand was registered.

The cellar door and café are open for food, wine, and tastings.

Wine Tastings from 10 am to 4.30 pm daily Café from 11.30 am to 3 pm, daily during the WA school holidays Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, and Anzac Day.

The cellar door is open Monday to Friday from 10 am until 5 pm and on weekends from 11 am until 4 pm.

Other wineries in the region include Arcadia Wines, Galafrey Wines, Gilbert Wines, Poacher’s Ridge, Hawker Ridge, Zarepath, Dukes Vineyard, and Castle Rock Estate.

Wildflowers

Visit Mt Barker from late August to November to see wildflowers on the mountains and farmlands. The local area, including Stirling Range National Park and Porongurup National Park , are one of the best places to see wildflowers in Western Australia .

Mondurup Reserve has an easy wildflower trail, with orchids and other floral species marked.

Orchids are often small, delicate, and secretive, but they are a great reward to find. Recently burnt bush areas are the best for orchid visibility, but please watch where you tread. As always, look but do not touch – picking and removing any plant material is illegal.

Dieback warnings must be adhered to and stick to the footpaths or marked trails to avoid spreading the disease.

Banksia Farm , owned by Kevin and Kathy Collins, is the only place in the world to find every species of Banksia grown. They have collected all 77 known types and 22 subtypes of Banksia, with some reaching a metre in diameter and twenty metres tall.

Granite Skywalk Castle Rock Trail

4.7 km Grade 5 – allow 2 to 3 hours

One of our favourite Western Australian hikes is the Granite Skywalk, the most visited place near Mount Barker.

See the Balancing Rock, a massive granite boulder balancing precariously on another rock, on the way to the lower lookout.

You’ll need to climb some huge granite boulders and climb a 6 m enclosed ladder to access the upper lookout and the Granite Skywalk, a suspended walkway around the gigantic Castle Rock. However, the spectacular views across farmland to Albany are worth the effort, and it’s a great hike.

If you’d prefer a guided tour with the knowledge of a local guide, consider this Granite Skywalk Tour run by a local Albany company. This tour is perfect for those looking for an adventurous day out combined with a tasty lunch and wine tasting.

Mt Barker History

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Menang Noongar People, and pay my respects to Elders past and present.

The Noongar word for Mount Barker Hill is Pwakkenbak, although I need help finding the meaning (if you know, please write it in the comments).

Mount Barker was first explored in 1829, nearly four years after the penal colony was established in Albany.

Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson, the colony’s surgeon, led a small party consisting of two convicts, a First Nations guide named Mokare, a soldier, and Albany’s commissariat officer.

Wilson named Mount Barker after Captain Collet Barker, commandant of the garrison at King George Sound.

By the 1830s, a military barracks had been built, followed by the road from Perth to Albany in 1835.

Sir Richard Spencer, the Government Resident in Albany, was the first settler who bought land in 1835 from the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Western Australia, Captain James Stirling.

Lieutenant George Egerton-Warburton married Spencer’s daughter, Augusta, and took up land upstream in 1842, naming his property St Werburgh after an early English Saxon church.

The population growth continued through the 1890s, and The WA Land Company gazetted the townsite in 1893 (and again in 1899).

Apple orchards became one of the major industries in the region until the mid-1960s. Vineyards have mainly replaced these. Viticulture, wheat, canola, plantation timber, sheep, and cattle are the main agricultural activities around Mount Barker today.

My Thoughts on Mount Barker

I don’t think Mount Barker is a destination in its own right, but it’s worth a stop on the way to Albany or Denmark. It also makes a great base for hiking the Stirling Range and the Porongurups.

The small rural town offers an insight into a country town with some fabulous wineries on its doorstep.

Interesting Things to do in Mt. Barker WA

Last Updated on 25 August 2023 by Ariana Svenson We hope you enjoy these things to do in Mt. Barker WA!  Mt. Barker – Pwakkenbak is a small country town that has a few interesting attractions that’s worth a day’s visit.  In addition, it is the closest town to the iconic Western Australia Castle Rock Granite Skywalk, so a great jumping-off point for a visit to the Porongurup National Park.

Pwakkenbak is the Noongar word for Mt. Barker Hill.  The people of Noongar Boodja (Noongar People’s Country) are the traditional owners of the South West of Western Australia,  and we recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay respect to Elders past and present and continue a commitment to the amplification of their voices.

Disclosure :  Through my site there are links to affiliates, which means that I might receive commission if you buy something after clicking them.  This costs you no more, and you definitely don’t pay extra.  However, I do get a small amount which contributes to the upkeep of this blog.    Thanks so much for all of your support – and we hope you have a ball in Western Australia!

Things To Do In Mt. Barker WA

The other most important of the Mt Barker WA attractions are the wineries.  There are some excellent wineries in the area and they can make a great place to stop during the road trip to either Denmark or Albany.  You can pass through Mt. Barker on a day trip to the Stirling Ranges or you could make it a base if you are planning to do a couple of hikes up Bluff Knoll and one of the other peaks!

History of Mt. Barker Western Australia

When I was a kid we’d drive through the “Shire of Plantagenet” and I honestly never knew why the area around Mt. Barker was called that.   Apparently, way back in the settler days, someone wanted to recognize one of the powerful and wealthy families of England and named the Shire after the Plantagenet Kings.  Just to get you oriented the first Plantagenet King was Henry the 2 nd .

Things to do in Mt. Barker WA

Old mount barker police station/ police station museum.

The old police station in Mt. Barker WA is the old fashioned building located on the right-hand side as you arrive in Mt Barker from the north on the Albany Highway.   It was built in 1868 by convicts and at first housed both the family of the police constable as well as those in the lockup!  Our guide showed us the bars on the windows of the kitchen, as prisoners were locked in the kitchen at night, after eating first with the family.

There are a range of other buildings on the site including a relocated classroom,  and stables.

It is interesting for kids of all ages to see the old equipment, kitchen, the bedrooms, tools, and basically how people lived in the olden days.  Older children will have an appreciation of how a prison used to be- very small and cold!

visit mount barker

The old Mount Barker police station is manned by volunteers of the Plantagenet Historical society who give a very insightful guided tour.   They are very passionate about their topic and involved in the collection of the different items collected there.  We thought that we would be able to wander around the rooms ourselves, but this was not the case,  you will be accompanied by one of the volunteers.  We spent an hour going through several buildings – but you could spend much, much longer!   our kids enjoyed the Old Police Station itself, the stables, and the school room where they got to teach a class!

The price is $10 per adult  and all funds go into the restoration of the many exhibits – in our opinion $10 very well spent.

visit mount barker

Mt. Barker WA Lookout

If you want to get oriented to Mount Barker it is worth going up to the Mt Barker lookout as the views going on forever.  If you have binoculars you can see the Albany Wind Farm, the Stirling Ranges, the Porongorups, the farms, and much more.

There are lots of interesting panels and historical information at the Mt Barker Lookout.  For example, the first European climbing of the mound by Dr. Thomas Braidwood Wilson and party in 1829 during an expedition from Albany – the same expedition that “discovered” nearby Denmark.

Another plaque erected by the Plantagenet Historical Society commemorates the pioneer women of the Plantagenet District.

A fun fact:  Nearby is the telecommunications tower standing 184m high.  Once the tallest unsupported structure in the southern hemisphere and opened in 1966 to so that the rural folk could receive ABC Television Broadcasts.

visit mount barker

St. Werbergh’s Church

If you like historical places, then St Werbergh’s church might be a lovely detour for you.  The road is very near to West Cape Howe and we had a coffee after our visit to St Werbugh’s.   The winding gravel road to St.Werburgh’s Church is very scenic and also off the beaten track. (Its 5km from the main road to the chapel) One of the most beautiful things about Mt Barker WA is the wide-open spaces and you certainly feel it during this scenic drive.

There is a real mystery and romance in visiting this small chapel on a windswept hill in the middle of farming lands.   The children were surprised and shocked by the number of children in the small graveyard who died during infancy or when they were very young.

St. Werburgh’s Church is located on a farm, so remember to close the door and gates as you leave.  Donations are gratefully received to assist in financing ongoing upkeep and restoration.

Mt. Barker Murals

A new addition to the town of Mt. Barker is a series of Murals that were added in late 2019.  The Mt Barker murals were the idea of the local police officer in charge, who invited the Walldogs, a collective of sign painters and mural artists from the United States whose speciality is to capture the history of an area in large scale public art murals.  There are now 7 murals in the centre of Mt. Barker and each has a different meaning.  You can walk up the main street (and hint, over to the Playground!) to discover them all!

Mt. Barker Visitor Centre

If you are looking for inside information regarding what there is to do and see around Mt Barker you might like to drop into the Mt.Barker Visitor Centre.  You could ask them about the hours for the Mt. Barker Old Police Station (Museum) or you could ask them for a map of the Mt.Barker Murals!

Things To Do In Mt. Barker WA

Mt. Barker Country Bakery

When I mentioned to a friend that we were heading to Mt. Barker WA they were clear, “You have to stop at the bakery, and it’s the BEST”!   Apparently, the Mt. Barker WA Country Bakery has got quite a reputation in country areas for having some delicious pies and cakes.

Mt. Barker Playground

My son absolutely loves the big red tractor at the Mt Barker playground.  In addition, there is a fun fairy garden and a slide and tunnels.  This is not one of Perth’s mega playgrounds, but that doesn’t matter.  The kids have had a lot of fun here during numerous visits.

Visit the Granite Skywalk Castle Rock Western Australia

The Granite Skywalk is by far the most visited place in Mt. Barker WA and with good reason.  It is breathtaking.  Not only are the views insanely good but it’s also a decent hike up the Castle Rock! There is a lot to know when you are climbing up to Castle Rock and Granite Skywalk, so we have written a whole post about  Hike To Granite Skywalk Castle Rock Western Australia .   Some of the many topics we cover are:

  • What Will I See At The Top Of The Granite Skywalk?
  • Tips For visiting the Granite Skywalk Castle Rock Western Australia.
  • Is The Castle Rock Granite Skywalk Suitable For Kids?

I should add that we have hiked the Granite Skywalk not once, but twice with kids, and so have different experiences each time.  The Granite Skywalk is one of the top things to do in Mt Barker WA

Porongurup National Park

Immense granite outcrops, the Porongorups, are visible for many kilometers and are a physical landmark of both size and beauty.  The Porongurup subregion’s cooler climate ensures that Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir have an excellent reputation.

It is true that that Porongurup National Park is most well known as the home to the Granite Skywalk – but there is actually more to do around than just that walk!

Nancy Peak, Porongorup Range National Park

Hike Nancy’s Peak

Nancy Peak hike is an excellent circuit walk for people looking for a 2 hour walk that takes you over the main peak of the Porongurup Ranges.  As well as the beauty of the moss-covered granite rocks and the lush forest, the views are magnificent with the Stirling Ranges visible to the north and, on a clear day, you can see the Southern Ocean.

Earlier this year I left the younger kids with a babysitter, my oldest went on a horse-riding camp and mum and I headed off to do Nancy Peak hike. This was our third attempt, the others with the kids crashing and burning on the uphill section… though they should have been able to do it! Mum is 78 and so while the hike is not long (5.5km) there was always the chance it was too steep and difficult and we would turn back again. But we didn’t…  it’s was invigorating joy of a hike to the top of a mountain, with soltitude and spectacular views.

This is one of many trails in the Porongurup National Park.  Another is the the three-hour return hike to Marmabup Rock, recommended for experienced bushwalkers.

Barker to the Bluff Knoll Carpark is about 55 minutes drive, and similar to the carpark of Mt. Hassell.

We’d highly recommend making  Mt. Barker WA your base for a Stirling Range National Park day trip!

Mt. Barker WA Wineries

The Great Southern Wine Region is considered a very large wine region, even by Australian standards.  It touches the southwest Coast and then heads north for almost 100 kilometers (60 miles).  Within that area, there are five wine-producing sub-regions within the Great Southern: Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker, and the Porongorups.

Most visitors to Western Australia associate either Margaret River or the Swan Valley with wine production.  They are usually surprised to learn that the Great Southern produces around 37% of wine grapes grown in WA.

Due to the unique and varied climates for grape growing from the coast in Denmark and Albany to the drier hinterland in Frankland and Mt. Barker, the area is becoming well known for its Riesling, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, amongst other wines.

We’ve explored things to do in Albany, Denmark, and the Porongorups in these posts:

The Porongorups are covered in this post: Hike to Granite Skywalk Castle Rock Western Australia

Plantagenet Wines

Not only are Plantagenet Wines one of the oldest vineyards in the great southern Wine Region– they might actually be the oldest!  Their marketing slogan describes the Plantagenet Wines as “wines of provenance and distinction that truly reflect the outstanding Great Southern Wine Region”.

They have a cellar door and restaurant, including a pizza and wine deal for only $20.  That is a great filler if you are on your way back to Perth!  I’ve also heard that if you are into history, the royal lineage charts alone are worth the time to browse and their wines are very good quality and value for money.

West Cape Howe Wines

We visited West Cape Howe Wines en route from Denmark to Perth, as the quickest route goes right past their door!  If not, it’s a short detour from Mt. Barker WA town itself.  While the big metallic vats that you see as you approach West Cape Howe strikes you as rather industrial, this is a wonderful winery and good for families.  A few couples with young children came during our visit, and the kids enjoyed playing on the expansive lawns. Very family-friendly with reasonable wine prices.

While we have heard that the West Cape Howe platters are delicious we have only had a coffee.  It was very tasty, and the coffee is roasted on-site.

Windrush Wines

On our list for our next trip to Mt. Barker WA is Windrush Wines which gets absolutely rave reviews for its interesting, seasonal menu described as fine cuisine.

The family-owned and run restaurant also specialize in Gluten-Free options.  We are excited to visit Windrush Wines ourselves and evaluate if it is as good as the reviews indicate!

Mt Barker Bakery

Accommodation Mt. Barker WA

There are not a lot of options for accommodation Mount Barker Western Australia.  Many people prefer to travel a little further and either stay in the little known Porongorups or even head to the coast and stay in Denmark or Albany.

In Mt Barker itself, there is Valley Views Motel , with 20 modern units, including family accommodation, chalets, and disabled facilities.

Mt Barker Caravan Park & Cabin Accommodation have caravan & camping sites, single rooms to fully self-contained family cabins.

Big Bird and Wolf Chalets, Kendenup

We love the fact that the Big Bird and Wolf Chalets have fully fenced yards so your dogs can run around.

Ferngrove Wines, Frankland

This Frankland Winery has three self-contained chalets with vineyard views.

Mount Baker Highway Day Trip From Bellingham

Touring the Mount Baker Highway is an extraordinary day trip packed with breathtaking scenery. Officially, it is both a Washington State Scenic Highway and a National Forest Scenic Byway. The route follows Highway 542 from Bellingham , passing through farmland and forest before winding its way up to Artist Point at 5100 feet.

Most of the route (116 miles round trip) is open year-round, taking you as far up as the Mount Baker Ski Area. Views of the Nooksack River Valley, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and the peaks of the North Cascade Mountain Range can be enjoyed during winter and summer.

Some of the most gorgeous and memorable scenery is located past the ski area where the road is only open during the warm months. The very best vistas and hikes along the Mount Baker Highway are at Heather Meadows and Artist Point. Planning your trip in August or September allows you to take full advantage of the stunning and colorful scenery. Late September and early October bring a bit of fall color .

What to Know Before You Go

Be prepared with a full tank of gas. There are no services such as food, gas, or flushing toilets beyond the town of Glacier at Mile 33, so be sure to bring snacks and plenty of water.

Choose your trails carefully if you have a dog. Dogs on leashes are permitted on most, but not all, trails.

A recreation pass is required. If you don't have the appropriate annual pass , you can purchase a day-use pass at the Glacier Public Service Center, located at Mile 34.

Where to Stop Along the Way

A great road trip combines ever-changing scenery with lots of fun stops where you can get out and explore. You'll find dozens of stopping places along the Mount Baker Highway, both inside and outside the National Forest. Among the many options, these are highly recommended:

Glacier Public Service Center  (mile 34)

Open seasonally, this official Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest station is the place to talk to expert rangers about current trail and road conditions, to get maps and guidebooks, and to purchase recreation passes. And there are bathrooms! This is the last public restroom along the highway with flush toilets, so take advantage of this opportunity. It is also the last place to fill your water bottles.

Nooksack Falls (mile 40)

A short drive off the main highway along Wells Creek Road (a well-maintained dirt road) takes you to the viewing area for this charming misty waterfall.

Picture Lake (mile 55)

For much of the year, this extremely photogenic little lake is as far as you can travel along the Mount Baker Highway. The road circles the lake, as does a flat and accessible half-mile trail. From the trail (or your parking spot) you can enjoy an amazing view of Mt. Shuksan, made all the more lovely reflected in the still lake.

Heather Meadows Visitor Center Area (mile 56)

While the visitor center is charming and historic, it's the surrounding scenery, including Table Mountain and Bagley Lakes, that make this stop a must-see. You can explore the area on the easy Fire & Ice Trail, the moderate Bagley Lakes Trail, or the more ambitious Chain Lakes loop.

Artist Point (mile 58)

After you've wound your way up Mount Baker Highway, all the gorgeous mountain scenery comes to an extraordinary climax at Artist Point. A short hike takes you to grand views of Mount Baker itself, the volcanic peak to the southwest of Artist Point. You don't even have to leave the parking lot to take in the breathtaking sight of Mt. Shuksan and the North Cascade Range. Hiking trails, including the short Artist Ridge trail, allow you to savor the views in all directions.

Recommended Day Hikes Along the Mount Baker Highway

One of the things that makes a Mount Baker Highway day trip so enjoyable is that's it's easy to break up the "road" part with time on nature trails or short day hikes. Maps and details for these hikes and more can be found at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest  website . Don't forget to ask about current trail conditions at the Glacier Public Service Center.

Short and Easy Day Hikes Even if you are more of a walker than a hiker, there are some picturesque places to get out and stretch your legs. Be sure and take your camera

  • Picture Lake (1/2 mile loop)
  • Fire & Ice (1/2 mile loop)
  • Artist Ridge (1 mile)
  • Boyd Creek (1/4 mile)

More Challenging Day Hikes Be sure and plan extra time for these challenging hikes. While the distances don't seem long, for the average hiker, the terrain may slow you down. And then, of course, there are the stop-worthy views.

  • Chain Lakes (6.5-mile loop)
  • Heliotrope Ridge (5.5 miles round trip)
  • Skyline Divide (9 miles round trip)

Food and Drink Along the Mount Baker Highway

There's some great food and drink to be had along State Highway 542. The bad news is that it's concentrated along the first half of the route. The good news: You'll get to take advantage of it each way, fueling yourself early in the journey and satisfying the appetite you worked up during the day on the way down. Here are some recommendations:

  • The North Fork Brewery  (mile 20) This "beer shrine," pizzeria, and wedding chapel offers microbrews crafted on-site as well as tasty pizza, calzones, grinders, and salads.
  • Grahams Restaurant  (mile 33) Under new ownership since 2011, Grahams Restaurant in Glacier continues to offer burgers, beer, and other house specialties.
  • Milano's Pasta Fresca (mile 33) This family-run restaurant features fresh and authentic Italian cuisine as well as deli-style sandwiches and desserts. Their Foriana pasta dish, with anchovies and raisins, is a unique and tasty dish.

AFL Gather Round at Mount Barker

The AFL Gather Round is heading back to South Australia in Round 4, from 4th to 7th April 2024, with the West Coast Eagles and Sydney Swans facing off at Mount Barker's Summit Sport and Recreation Park on Saturday 6th April and the Gold Coast Suns playing the GWS Giants on Sunday 7th April.

The games on Saturday 6th April and Sunday 7th April are sell outs. However those who missed out on tickets will still be able to get involved through community events, details of which will be announced closer to Gather Round.

For information about where to catch all the action both before and after the games, stay tuned to the Mount Barker District Council website and Facebook page .

Further information about all AFL Gather Round matches can be found on the official AFL website .

Hills Football

Beyond the AFL Gather Round, the Adelaide Hills footy league is also a thriving competition that really heats up when the months turn cold. Hills footy is hard and hectic, thanks to inter-village sporting rivalries that go back over a century.

How do I get my fix of Hills footy?

The present league (Hills Football League, formed in 1967) is the largest outside of Adelaide and hosts 19 clubs. Each Saturday, ovals across the region reliably fill up, with crowds at their most feverish when finals start in August. Juniors usually enjoy first bounce at 9am, but you might be best arriving for 2.30pm when the Div 1 A-Grade teams face off. By this time, the braziers are roaring, the barbecues are sizzling and the home crowd and visitors are desperately trying to outdo each other, either by exercising their vocals or honking their car-horns.

A few basics. Entry will be around $7, a snag or a burger will set you back around $5 and if you really want to fit in, you should wear chequered flanny (several layers) and uggs. The piece de resistance is a ute, reverse-parked and suitably accoutred in the back with chairs, doona and esky. As well as local colour, a few ovals are enhanced by sublime country surrounds (Nairne, Macclesfield and Kangarilla are prime examples) as well as very supportive local pubs.

Reflecting the standard of play, you might see a few famous names on the field, and thanks to long-standing rivalries, some grudge matches are guaranteed to please: look out especially for Bridgewater-Bremer vs Mount Lofty, Birdwood vs Gumeracha, and Hahndorf vs Mount Barker.  See the fixtures .
