Reaching from the enchanting port town of Malaga along the coast to Gibraltar, the Costa del Sol is one of the best-loved spots in the Mediterranean for holidaymakers. Beautiful topography, endless beaches, and some of the best weather in Europe are just some of the reasons this region is perfect for a small ship cruise around Spain. Mainland, or as it is known locally, Peninsular Spain enjoys long and quite hot summers, although the temperature will be slightly lower on the coast with cool sea breezes keeping the hot midday at bay. So, the best time to visit Spain’s mainland depends on how hot you like; sun lovers will find June to August the warmest months, perfect for heading to the beach or jumping off the boat at swim stops. The Spring is cooler with the best months from March to May perfect for sightseeing, warm but not the severe heat of the summer. The colder months over the winter are great for those who want to avoid the crowds and make the most of the lower prices. January to February is also when Spanish towns host their fiestas, weeks of different local celebrations, which are an incredible cultural and social experience. The Canary Islands also host fiestas at this time; however, the weather is significantly warmer, and although it can reach higher temperatures in summer, most of the year is balmy, warm, and comfortable Spring weather.

How to get to Spain

A much-loved destination for visitors around the world, reaching a small ship cruise around Spain is easy with non-stop international flights to Madrid and Barcelona from the U.S. and connecting international flights available from European airports to Malaga, Seville, and Almeria. Reaching the Canary Islands usually involves a stop in Madrid, Casablanca, or London. Inter-island flights in the Canaries are frequent and cost-effective. Although there is also the option of ferries between all of the parts of the archipelago, these can be quite slow, though often stopping at each island in turn. It is worth noting that international flights to La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera are quite rare, and inter-island hopping is the best way to reach these parts.

Carnival Sunrise Conversion Marks Five Years

• April 23, 2024

The Carnival Sunrise conversion is marking five years this month. The $200-million project took place in Spain and saw the Carnival Cruise Line ship essentially being rebuilt.

As part of the bow-to-stern makeover project, the former Carnival Triumph received all-new public areas, as well as additional cabins and new features.

The two-month-long refit took place at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz, Spain, and also included upgrades to the ship’s technical systems.

Among the new features added were new dining options, such as Seafood Shack and Bonsai Sushi, a new ropes course, and a reinvented atrium.

While all of the ship’s cabins were redecorated with an island-inspired look, over 50 staterooms were added to different parts of the vessel.

Following the work, the Carnival Sunrise debuted on April 29, 2019. On that day, the 2,984-guest vessel kicked off a series of five- to seven-day voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas departing from Norfolk.

The Sunrise then repositioned to New York City for a summer program that included four- to 14-night cruises to Bermuda, Canada & New England, and the Caribbean.

In October 2019, the vessel moved to Fort Lauderdale for a series of four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

After repositioning to Miami in 2021, the ship continued to offer similar itineraries with a schedule that includes four- and five-night cruises to destinations like Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Nassau, the Bahamas.

Part of Carnival Cruise Line’s Destiny Class, the Carnival Sunrise originally entered service in 1999 as the Carnival Triumph.

Its two sister ships, the former Carnival Destiny and the former Carnival Victory, also underwent similar refurbishments over the years.

The 1996-built Destiny became the Carnival Sunshine in 2013 , while the 2000-built Victory emerged as the Carnival Radiance in 2021 .

While I am an avid cruiser, I haven’t explored the cruise ports in Spain yet! So, I asked my friend Clarice, from the Clever West Wind to share her expertise on Spain with us!

Cruise Ports in Spain

Spain has many ports that serve as cruise terminals that welcome passengers from around the world.

Some of the major cruise ports in Spain include Alicante, Almeria, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Cadiz, Ibiza, La Coruna, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, and Vigo.

Alicante Cruise Port

Alicante is a cruise port located on Costa Blanca in the southeast of Spain. It’s known for its long beaches and beautiful scenery, as well as its vibrant nightlife. 

The city has a rich history going back to Roman times. So there are plenty of historical sites to explore, such as the Santa Barbara Castle that overlooks the city and the Mediterranean. 

You can access the castle by foot, elevator, or shuttle. The hike involves many steps and can be steep in places, but only takes about 15 minutes from the city center. 

The elevator is located across from Postiguet Beach and costs 2.7. However, it’s frequently closed, so check online before using this option. The shuttle costs 1.45 each way; click here for more information

The Alicante port terminal is about a 15-20 minute walk from the city center. However, a free shuttle is available to take you to the city center as well.

Postiguet Beach is also only a 15-minute walk from the port.

Almeria Cruise Port

Almeria is a bustling port city located on the Mediterranean coast in the southeast of Spain.

Many people docking in Almeria will book a day trip to visit the Alhambra in Granada. 

However, there is plenty to see and do in Almeria if you want to stay in the city. The port is only a 10 to 15-minute walk to the city center, and many sites of interest here are very close together.

Visit the 10th-century Alcazaba of Almeria , a 6th-century cathedral, or the Almeria underground air raid shelters.

The Almeria air raid shelters are the longest in Europe and were built in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War.

Almeria also boasts some incredible natural attractions such as Los Cabos de Gata Natural Park, about 45 minutes east of the city. Here you can take part in activities like hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Barcelona Cruise Port

Barcelona Spain is one of the most popular cruise ports in Europe. Located in Catalonia on the Mediterranean coast, this city bursts with culture and history and boasts more than 80 museums. 

It’s a good 30 to 40-minute walk from Barcelona’s cruise port to the old city, so it’s best to take the shuttle, a bus, or a taxi.

The port shuttle drops you off at the Columbus Monument across the street from La Rambla. From here, it’s only about a 15-minute walk down La Rambla to the Gothic Quarter, with lots to see and experience along the way. 

One must-see site in Barcelona is La Sagrada Familia Cathedral by Antoni Gaudi . La Sagrada is a brilliantly unique cathedral built in the Modernista style, full of light and color.

Located in the Eixample district, it’s best to take a taxi or public transit to get here. Be sure to book tickets online in advance to ensure they don’t sell out.

Bilbao Cruise Port

Bilbao, Spain is located in the Basque region of northern Spain, surrounded by lush green mountains.

The Bilbao cruise port is actually located in the neighboring town of Getxo. 

Most cruise lines offer a shuttle service from the port to Bilbao city center, or you can take the metro. Both options take about 20 minutes. 

Once in Bilbao’s city center, it’s very walkable with plenty of attractions within easy reach. The one site Bilbao is most well known for is its Guggenheim Museum . 

The Guggenheim Museum is a unique work of architecture full of sweeping curves and odd angles.

The building itself is as interesting as the modern art collections within. Skip the lines and book tickets for this must-see location online in advance.

Cartagena Cruise Port

Cartagena cruise port is located on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern Spain. The port is located right in Cartegena’s city center. Plus, the city itself is also very walkable, with lots of shore excursions available that are within easy reach.

There are three separate locations to view old Roman ruins in this city. The most impressive of the three is the 1st-century Roman amphitheater.

You can also view a Roman necropolis located in the Municipal Archaeology Museum. Or visit Casa de la Fortuna to see how upper-class Romans lived here at the time. 

Cartagena also has a rich collection of modernist architecture throughout the city.

Some of the most noteworthy of these buildings include Palacio Pedreno, Casino de Cartagena, Casa Cervantes, and the Gran Hotel.

Another option is to book an excursion from Cartagena to Murcia . The city of Murcia is a highly underrated destination, only about a 45-minute drive inland from Cartagena.

It’s nicknamed “Europe’s Orchard” for its fruit, vegetable, and flower exports, and has an amazing gastronomy scene. 

Murcia is a very walkable city, with many of its museums, monuments, and squares in close proximity.

If you book a trip to Murcia, one site you cannot miss is the Murcia Cathedral on the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga. 

The cathedral has a gothic interior surrounded by a Baroque exterior, built atop an 11th-century Moorish mosque. In the adjoining cathedral museum, you can view excavations of the prior mosque.

Cadiz Cruise Port

Cadiz , Spain is a historic port city located on the country’s southwestern coast. The city sits on a narrow spit of land, surrounded by water on three sides.

Founded in 1104 BC, this is possibly the oldest continually-inhabited city in all of Western Europe. 

The cruise port is only a five-minute walk from the city center. And the city itself is easily walkable with plenty of things to do and see, making it ideal for those looking to explore while visiting this beautiful coastal town.

However, if you prefer not to walk, the cruise terminal is one of the stops for the Cádiz Hop On Hop Off Bus.

As Cadiz is known for its total of 129 watchtowers, one must-have experience is climbing to the top of the Torre Tavira .

MADRID (AP) — A cruise ship stuck in the northeastern Spanish port of Barcelona will be able to resume its route after a group of Bolivian passengers with visa problems were taken off the vessel on Thursday, authorities said.

The Spanish government said in a statement it had reached an agreement with MSC Cruises Company in which 69 Bolivian passengers were removed from the boat and taken to a transit zone in the port, but were not granted permission to enter Spanish territory.

The ship got stranded in Barcelona this week after the Bolivian passengers were not allowed to disembark because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries that Spain is part of.

Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers, but the boat was scheduled to travel onward to other countries.

The cruise company agreed to provide another boat from Livorno, Italy, for the Bolivian passengers later Thursday, the government statement said. It was not clear if that boat would remain in Barcelona until the situation is resolved or take the Bolivian passengers elsewhere.

Under the agreement, MSC Cruises will also provide food and health care for the impacted Bolivians and immigration officials will work to resolve the passengers’ visa problems as quickly as possible, it added.

The MSC Armonia, with more than 1,000 passengers reportedly on board, plans to sail to Italy on Thursday, the cruise company said.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press on Wednesday she had received reports that some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said.

Spain’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil” but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.

Vigo is a major port and city in Spain's Galicia (autonomous territory on the Iberian Peninsula) and part of the Pontevedra Province. By population (around 300,000) Vigo is Galicia's most populous municipality. The Province's capital - Pontevedra City - is approx 30 km (18 mi) to the north via AP-9 highway (linking La Coruna-Santiago de Compostela-Pontevedra-Vigo-Tui).

Vigo Municipality also includes the Islas Cies archipelago , consisting of three islands - Monteagudo (North Island), do Faro (Middle Island) and San Martino (South Island). Port Vigo (locode ESVGO) is a large harbor on Ria de Vigo (coastal inlet/estuary) and is currently ranked the world's largest fishing port by annual tonnage (750,000+ tonnes of unloaded fish). The Port covers land area approx 140 km2 (54 mi2/14000 hectares/34600 acres) and consists of 6 different zones - Bouzas (passenger ships, repair shipyards), Beiramar-O Berbes (fishing port), Transatlantic Dock, Marina Dock (yachts), O-Areal (cargo ships), and Guixar (for container ships). O-Real and Guixar docks both have railway connections. Annually, Port Vigo handles over 220,000 passengers.

Regularly scheduled ferries from Vigo link to Cies Islands/Monteagudo (travel time 45 min), with services provided by two companies - Naviera Nabia (2x weekly crossings) and Mar de Ons (4x weekly crossings). Ferryboats (of Mar de Ons) also connect Vigo with Ons Island (2x weekly crossings, travel time 1,5 hours).

The city's economy is heavily based on shipping (cargo and passenger/ferries and cruise liners), shipyards (shipbuilding and drydock repairs), commercial fishing and fisheries, car manufacturing at Centro de Vigo de Stellantis (1958-founded by Citroen car factory, originally named "Citroen Hispania", where are also assembled models of Peugeot, Opel/Vauxhall, and Toyota), as well as on tourism and services.

The city is served by Vigo-Peinador Airport (approx 10 km / 6 mi from downtown) where are handled domestic flights (by the Spanish airlines Iberia Express, Iberia Nostrum, Air Europa, Vueling, and the Irish carrier Ryanair) linking to Madrid , the port cities Barcelona , Bilbao , Valencia , also to the Canary Islands ( Gran Canaria , Tenerife -North). Regularly scheduled trains link to Portugal's port city Oporto . European route E01/highway links to La Coruna and Lisbon (Portugal's capital city).

Galicia is at Iberian Peninsula's northwest corner, and within its 1200 km/745 mi Atlantic coastline there are 800 beaches with total 275 km/170 mi of stretches of white sand reaching up to hills and mountains (Ancazares, Courel, Pena Trevinca, Manzaneda).

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

• Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels. 
• Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.
