Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Driver Review

Dan E.

Stepping back into focus for the better player, Wilson Staff has introduced the FG Tour F5 Driver, said to be packed with the flexibility of a flight manipulating head without the cost of total forgiveness.  This comes alongside a highly adjustable and extremely light adapter “Fast Fit” system.  Golfers will be able to quickly adjust to their preferred setting without completely separating the head from the shaft.

From Wilson Staff

The new FG Tour F5 line of golf clubs from Wilson Staff offer designs geared to suit the eye of the better player while providing game improvement technology to help compliment anyone’s game.

“Our product design starts and ends with the player in mind and even the best players want to manage and minimize their miss-hits as much as possible” comments Global Director of Innovation Michael Vrska.

FG Tour F5 Drivers (MAP: $379.99) – The FG Tour F5 driver is offered in two lofts, each featuring six loft settings and three adjustable sole weights to allow players to attain their ideal launch angle, ball speed and spin rate. Wilson Advisory Staff PGA Tour players heavily influenced and refined the deep face, 460cc head during its developmental stages.

Out of the Box

The FG Tour F5 driver has a relatively traditional look at address, with the exception of marginal crown graphics towards the back heel.  It is not enough to distract the eye at address, and does not take away from the unique sight line that sits behind the ball well.  On the sole of the FG Tour F5, a removable weight is centered and slightly forward toward the face.  Based on the notes from Wilson, this is one of three weights that can potentially change the spin and launch profile (the only weight provided for this review was yellow).  Overall, the design of the head stands out by being quite neutral in total.  Something that is often pursued by traditionalists.

The Technology

Fast Fit Technology – From Michael Vrska of Wilson Staff: It is one of the lightest, smallest, quickest and easy-to-use hosel adjustment systems available.  It’s simple…  Green means go.  Turn the screw just a few times, see the green band around the shaft adaptor and rotate it to the new, desired position.

Without question, this is one of the easiest adapters to use.  Like noted above, testing did not require the head to be removed from the shaft in order to change the setting.  Rather, it stayed attached but loosened enough to manipulate the loft by half degree increments.  For the 10.5 degree driver sent for review, that includes going as low as 9.5 degrees, and as high as 12.5 degrees of loft.

The testing included playing the FG Tour F5 from all settings both on the course and on the range.  There was a fairly obvious launch adjustment changing back and forth from the extreme settings, with the launch differential tapering off as the loft altering was limited to half degree increments.  This also included subtle fades in the lower lofted settings, changing to somewhat of a draw bias as the club moved closer to the 12.5 degree loft setting.

The change in loft setting altered the launch angle ranging from a couple degrees for some golfers to upwards of five or six degrees for those who have a tendency to hit a higher golf ball.  Based on the Fubuki shaft profile, golfers can anticipate a higher than their average launch angle versus other shafts, and those who do hit a high ball will expect much of the same when playing in the higher settings of the F5.  With that in mind, this pairing seemed to suit a higher launching, higher spinning player at 9.5 more than it did a lower launching lower spinning player set at 12.5 degrees.  This can easily be attributed to the limited spin profile that has been suggested and experienced with the FG Tour F5 driver.

An interchangeable weight placed low and close to the face decreases spin while maintaining an optimal launch for maximum distance. From Michael Vrska: Very minimal ball flight differences (essentially no change in launch angle and less than 150 rpm in spin in total) as the adjustable weights are placed in line with the center of gravity.  The 3, 7 and 11 gram weights are included so that players can determine which version they swing fastest.  It’s another aspect of fitting that we think is important.

While this technology was not able to be put to the test, altering the weight of the head certainly adds an additional element to the responsiveness and feedback during the swing, allowing golfers to make minute changes to better adapt to their style of swing and tempo.  Without causing large changes to flight or spin, this could be just as important as selecting the proper shaft weight.

Reactive Face™ technology features variable thicknesses to maximize response and ball speeds at every spot on the face.  A chemically-etched crown reduces weight where it does not benefit the golfer to be repositioned elsewhere in the head to lower center of gravity and increase moment of inertia.

Being able to miss across the face without large drops of ball speed is becoming increasingly more important in the driver category.  While some tend to focus their experiences on hitting the center of the face during demo sessions, being slightly off can be the difference between the edge of the fairway, and a hazard.  For the FG Tour F5 driver, there seemed to be plenty of room to miss away from the center of the face, and while the distance did suffer higher and towards the toe as well as lower and towards the heel, the misses seemed more comparable to a mid-range driver head instead of one geared towards a better player.

It is not to say that the entire face has become the strikezone for quality ball contact, however one element that was very enjoyable was a distinct alteration in sound between perfect contact and an every changing sound further away from that point.  Despite the somewhat hollow *thunk* that is produced, it is very evident when contact departs the center of the face.  One interesting take on the sound overall was “ First driver I’ve ever hit that didn’t feel the way it sounded. It felt really good. Even low on the face where I caught one.”   Preference to sound will be very dependent on the individual, however one can certainly expect a unique sound from the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver.

Despite the room for error, this did not limit the ability to work the ball left and right with the F5 driver on command.  Holes that demanded anything from 10-50 yards offline could be implemented with relative ease, making it round out a category of ‘workability when you want it’ very well.  THP asked Michael Vrska of Wilson Staff how hard it is to achieve a balance between low spin and forgiveness, and what it takes to get to that point.  From Vrska: There can be trade-offs in club design and simply the moving the weight forward, while reducing spin, typically also reduces MOI.  So, when the FG Tour F5 Driver was designed we used every available gram of discretionary mass – from the lightweight, chemically etched crown, from the lighter, smaller Fast Fit hosel and from other strategic points of the head design – to ensure that the F5 Driver was a forgiving product with an MOI of over 4000.  Now, it’s not as forgiving as the D200, but mid to low handicap players will be very, very pleased with the forgiveness and off center hit performance.

Parting Thoughts

The conclusions after reviewing the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver extensively are quite positive.  For golfers who are seeking a limited spin offering without throwing away the idea of forgiveness, this driver will be a worthy candidate.  Combined with a unique sound, relatively traditional external design elements, and a well-known shaft pairing, the FG Tour F5 provides an excellent ‘player’ compliment to the D200 in the Wilson Staff lineup.  For more information, visit www.WilsonGolf.com.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver was designed for better players who want a classic-looking club that also delivers quick, no-nonsense adjustability.

The all-titanium, 460cc head comes in 9-degree and 10.5-degree versions. Thanks to Wilson’s new Fast Fit adjustable hosel system, golfers can increase the loft by up to 2 degrees or decrease it by as much as 1 degree without having to remove the head from the shaft.

Wilson chemically etched the crown of the Tour F5 to make it as thin as possible and to create discretionary weight. Designers then gave the driver a housing to hold an adjustable weight plug in the sole to lower the center of gravity. Each club comes with a 3-gram aluminum weight, along with 7- and 11-gram stainless-steel weights. The weight is positioned more forward than in Wilson’s D200 driver (which is designed for slower-swinging players) to help the Tour F5 reduce spin.

Finally, Wilson made the face of the Tour F5 slightly thicker in the center and thinner around the edges of the hitting area to enlarge the sweet spot and protect ball speed on off-center hits.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver will be in stores in January. It will come standard with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki shaft for $379.99.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Driver Review

A player's driver all the way around., by david theoret.

Wilson Staff's latest product offering for true players is the FG Tour F5 driver. As the name would suggest, the F5 fits into the F (Feel) category of Wilson's F-C-D (Feel-Crossover (formerly Control)-Distance) system. Unfortunately, Wilson Staff's last players' line of drivers and woods, the M3, did not make it to the end of its 2-year life cycle - rest in peace M3. The new F5 could be a game changer for Wilson Staff; they haven't had a viable better player's driver in quite a while. It also represents their foray into the world of low/forward CG drivers. The driver is able in two lofts, that is, before you adjust them - 9° and 10.5°. The 6-way adjustable hosel can be set from 8-degrees to 12.5-degrees in half-degree increments. Sorry lefties; your only option is 9°. And, the hosel can be adjusted without removing the clubhead. The folks at Wilson Staff worked extensively with their PGA Tour players to refine the look and feel of the F5 driver. The adjustable weight and internal weighting was moved forward and lower to reduce spin, and maintain the launch angle. The other movable part is a weight in the bottom of the clubhead. There are three interchangeable weights (3, 7 and 11 grams) that allow players to further fine-tune spin rate and launch characteristics for optimum carry distance and trajectory. In testing against the TaylorMade R15 driver set at 9°, the F5 showed over 25% less spin and a slightly higher launch angle, resulting in more carry and roll. One other aspect that can be altered by moving these weights around is club head speed. According to Michael Vrska, Global Director of Golf R&D at Wilson Sporting Goods, "Most players, about 60-65%, will swing fastest with the 7-gram option, but 15%-20% each will swing faster with the lighter and heavier options." The 7-gram weight is what comes installed in the driver. Another feature of note Wilson Staff's Reactive Face Technology. In layman's terms, this feature maximizes the amount of time the ball is in contact with the clubface at impact. I use the analogy of the trampoline effect. The FG Tour F5 also features a chemically etched crown which according to the company saves weight that can be redistributed to help with launch and spin. Standing over the club at address, the high gloss black, pear-shaped head has a classic look and feel. What you can't see is the sole of the club which is also high gloss black and accentuated with gold and chrome with the Wilson Staff shield emblem on the toe. It may be hard to believe, but golf equipment manufacturers put a lot of R&D (and money) into the sound a driver makes at impact. The way I look at it, any driver that can help me launch the ball 260 yards straight down the fairway is sweet music to my ears. Nonetheless, poor sound quality can equal poor sales, as was the case with the M3 line. Indoor and Outdoor testing with both amateurs and professionals has produced a unique sounding driver. The F5's headcover has gone retro. Gone is the long, knitted graphite shaft protector and in its place is a headcover with a leather feel and texture that is black, gold and white and lined with a soft red felt interior. It's a great addition to a great looking club. The stock shaft is a Fubuki Z-50 with customized graphics to match the clubhead. As with previous Wilson Staff offerings, additional shafts will be available through Wilson at an upcharge. I think Wilson has hit the nail on the head in targeting this new driver at handicappers 18 and under; it will definitely appeal to low handicappers. It's a great looking club that follows through on its claims and delivers! The FG Tour F5 driver will retail for $379.99 and be available sometime in early January. Wilson FG Tour F5 driver review

Wilson builds quality clubs at a relatively affordable price point. The question is how much does quality suffer related to the lower price?

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

At £279, the brand’s latest offering is hardly a pinch – the D200, which came out in the early months of 2015, is priced at £199.

However, for the extra money, you are getting an A-grade driver. Is it worth shelling out extra cash? That depends on the consumer, and whether they want more performance from their big stick.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 has a deep face, which should inspire confidence at address. It has an uncluttered aesthetic on the crown, while the sole lets you know there is some cutting-edge technology employed. The face is naturally quite lofted at address.

The feel was not up to the standard of the leading brands. It isn’t dead, but it has a quiet, understated feel - we would have liked more feedback.

Performance

In the distance and forgiveness stakes we were reeling off the superlatives. While it’s not the longest driver you’ll hit all year, it’s only a couple of yards behind, offering plenty of power.

An interchangeable weight is placed low and close to the face to lower spin rates, which were average for a driver. In terms of launch angle, it was a little higher than the median.

Reactive Face technology is employed, which varies the thickness of the face, and it seems to be paying dividends as we were getting a heap of help on off-centre hits.

In terms of workability it is middle of the pack, although there is a heap of adjustability built in. Three adjustable sole weights allow players to alter launch angles, ball speeds and spin, and there is also a six-way adjustable hosel covering lofts from eight to 12 degrees in half degree increments.

There’s also no need to remove the head from the shaft to alter the loft, thanks to Fast Fit Technology, which allows players to change the setting quickly and easily.

The best Wilson Staff driver to date. Distance and forgiveness equal to leading drivers in the market, but falls down in the feel stakes. Lots of adjustability to boot.

The new Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 range has been revealed, and will include a new driver, fairway wood, hybrid and forged iron set that will replace the popular FG Tour M3 family.

Wilson Staff say the new range has been developed for golfers who want the looks of better player clubs, but with some game improvement technology to help complement their game.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver

The new Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver has already been put into play by the likes of Kevin Streelman and Brendan Steele on the PGA Tour, and will come in two lofts at 9° and 10.5°.

Each head will then feature a six-way adjustable hosel that covers loft settings from 8° to 12° in half degree increments.

New for the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver is the addition of the Green Means GO! Fast Fit technology, which lets you make quick adjustments by eliminating the need to remove the club head from the shaft when making a set-up alteration.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver

Like the popular Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 driver it replaces, the new F5 has three adjustable sole weights so you can also tune your launch angle, ball speed and spin rate by swapping from lighter to heavier weights.

Reactive Face technology also returns, with a variable thicknesses boosting ball speeds across the face.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 fairway wood

The new driver will be joined by the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 fairway wood, which will also have the Green Means GO! Fast Fit technology.

It will be available in three lofts, and each one will feature a six-way adjustable hosel and an interchangeable weight placed low and close to the face that decreases spin for maximum distance.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 hybrid

The new F5 hybrid utilises the same Carpenter Custom 455 maraging stainless steel face insert found in the fairway wood, which creates a thin and flexible face for increased ball speeds and longer distances.

Available in 17°, 20° and 23° heads, the hybrid will have three loft and three lie settings along with the same Green Means GO! Fast Fit technology in its adjustable hosel.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons

Completing the new Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 family are the new F5 irons, which use the same Speed Sole technology debuted in the  Wilson Staff D200 irons , created for players who desire a blend of forged feel and pure distance.

This is possible thanks to a thin face-to-sole transition that expands the sweet spot lower in the face for faster ball speeds and longer distances in the long and mid irons.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 iron

A stabilising bar also provides support behind the thin faces for greater forgiveness, while cavity back heads forged from an 8620 carbon steel provide a combination of feel, feedback and forgiveness on mishits.

The F5 iron set are fitted with True Temper Dynamic Gold XP steel shafts or MRC Kuro Kage LB 85 graphite shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips, and are available in 4-PW, GW, with a 3-iron available in right-hand only.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 prices

The new Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 range will be available from January 2016, with the driver retailing at £279, the fairway at £199, the hybrid at £179 and the FG Tour F5 irons at £599 (steel) and £699 (graphite).

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Fairway Review

What we say...

The F5 features a refined head shape and carpenter 455 maraging steel face to increase sweetspot size and maximise ball speeds. Low and forward weighting lowers spin but maintains optimum launch conditions for maximum distance say Wilson.

Our verdict:

There aren’t too many fairways that talk up the benefits of low forward weighting as typically they’re harder to launch from the short grass. But Wilson reckon they’ve tuned the F5’s launch and spin to deliver optimal carry distance.  The promised hot penetrating flight was born out in our data as the F5 launched shots on and peaked shots out lower than any other fairway on test. Yet it still managed to post above average carry distance numbers, which is pretty impressive. The head shape wasn’t loved by everyone but we did all agree the Fubuki shaft which comes as standard is excellent quality. Interestingly our longest shots came from the low toe area while the fastest ball speeds came from closer to the centre of the face, which we reckon has to say the Reactive face is doing a job on off centre hits.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Fairway

Bottom line:

In our opinion a fairway for stronger golfers who want to control and manage spin from the fairway. We liked the ability to switch loft (through the adjustable hosel) without changing the face angle massively. It gives the option of setting up the F5 as either a standard or strong lofted 3 wood for use from the tee or a more versatile 17deg 4 wood.

Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 Irons Review

More in irons:.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 E524 Irons

50 Words or Less

The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons are great clubs with performance that would be beneficial to any player.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-9

Introduction

Our own Matt Saternus is a longtime fan of Wilson Staff, but I have only recently started dipping my toe back into the pool.  As a kid, I swore by the Wilson Staff Titanium golf balls and my Wilson 7 wood.  The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons were my first introduction back into world of Wilson Staff irons, and, as I’ve experienced with other Wilson Staff reviews I’ve done, I was very pleasantly surprised .

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-3

From address, the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons have a similar look to a lot of other irons in the industry that fall into the category of a player’s iron with a lot of built in forgiveness – or as Wilson refers to it, a “crossover” iron.  The length of the head  from heel to toe is somewhat compact, the top line is a medium size, and the offset is very minimal.   Wilson Staff heard the feedback on the FG Tour M3 – that it looked too much like a game improvement club – and made sure they fixed that with the F5.

The cavity has Wilson Staff branding highlighted by the Wilson Staff shield.  Also visible in the cavity is the Stabilizing Bar which is used to support the thin forged face .  This helps make the face a bit more forgiving while still maintain workability in the golf shot.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-2

Sound & Feel

I found the the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons to be very quiet when striking the ball.  The sound is a muted pop off the face.   When you miss the sweet spot, you get a little more of that rocky click that most of us are all too familiar with.  Most of the sound comes from the thump of the turf at impact.

Solid shots feel soft and pure , and where mishits don’t necessarily feel like you rocked the golf ball, they don’t sting your hands with punishment for a bad shot.  The F5 is very easy to control throughout the swing and is one of those clubs where your hands and body won’t be paying for it after a long practice session.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-13

Performance

First and foremost, I have to tell you that I think the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 irons have to be one of the easiest clubs to hit well in all of my years of experience .  Wilson utilizes a technology they call “Speed Sole” which is designed to make the transition area between face and sole as thin as possible.  This is designed to “expand the sweet spot lower in the face for faster ball speeds in the long and mid irons.”  Now, I can’t tell you that I necessarily went “yep, that’s the difference maker” but there aren’t many 4 irons I’ve had an easier time hitting pure in my lifetime.

With the Wilson Staff F5’s, I think it is imperative to make sure you have the right shaft for your game.  The stock Dynamic Gold XP was too soft for me and caused a lot of pop ups.  Once I tested the F5’s with a shaft better fit for me, I had a really strong, piercing ball flight with good distance and tight dispersion .  What does this mean in layman’s terms?  Predictability and consistency – the hallmarks of a solid set of irons.

Wilson FG Tour F5 Irons-1

Take it from me, if you’re sleeping on Wilson Staff golf equipment, you need to stop now.  My biggest take away from this  Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 iron review was that these are some serious irons  that are as good as, if not better than, a lot of other big names in the game.  If you’re in the market for a new set of irons, make sure you give the Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 a fair look.  Hit them with a shaft appropriate for your swing, and you won’t be disappointed.

very good looking club-I play W/S irons. No mention of what shaft these new models have ?

' src=

I mentioned it in the Performance section:

“With the Wilson Staff F5’s, I think it is imperative to make sure you have the right shaft for your game. The stock Dynamic Gold XP was too soft for me and caused a lot of pop ups.”

' src=

I currently play the M3 irons and love the feel of these irons. The ball feels soft off the face and are longer than my previous irons. I had planned to buy the F5 but after playing and buying the M3 irons, I am satisfied with feel and play ability . Wilson make tremendous irons and I am sure the F5 will be another awesome set. I am surprised more players dont play Wilson Staff Irons.

' src=

Bill or Matt can you comment on the difference between the two? I know Matt did the M3 irons review, but I would be interested to see if there is a huge difference between the two iron sets, possibly if Matt could comment as he played the v2’s for a couple seasons and he did the m3 review.

thanks, hey and thanks for all your reviews and responses to comments, love this site

' src=

I haven’t spent much time with the F5 irons at all, but I haven’t heard a single bad thing. My understanding is that compared to the M3, the F5 is a bit better looking and a touch more forgiving.

' src=

Like your reviews

' src=

just ordered myself a set of these after testing them at the local pro shop and I couldn’t agree more. There certainly easy to launch but give that better player look. Its funny though how shaft is almost personal to the individual rather than based on table of swing speeds. I swing a driver up close to 110 and yet I find that I like the softer shaft stiff flex in my irons.

Wilson Staff’s new FG Tour M3 Driver, Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Irons

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Wilson Staff’s newest line of equipment, the FG Tour M3, for the first time offers adjustable features in a Wilson Staff driver, fairway wood and hybrid.

The company’s previous line of equipment, the D100 series, was tailored to golfers seeking distance. But the FG Tour M3 is aimed at better players who are often more concerned with looks and feel.

“Wilson Staff is dedicated to helping golfers play their best and having custom fit, personalized equipment is the best way to make that happen,” said Michael Vrska, global director of R&D for Wilson Staff. “We believe strongly in adjustability, especially for what we identify as a feel player, so that trajectory can be optimized and ball speed can be maximized.”

FG Tour M3 Driver

WS_FG_Tour_M3_Driver_Hero

The FG Tour M3 driver comes set at 9.5 degrees, but its adjustable hosel can adjust loft from 8.5 to 11.5 degrees in 0.5-degree increments. The deep-faced 460-cubic-centimeter head also has an adjustable sole weight to help golfers tune the swingweight of the club.

Like the FG Tour M3 fairway woods and hybrids, the driver has what Wilson calls an “Iced Matte Painted Crown” and a black PVD finish. The driver head is manufactured with a variable thickness face that maximizes CT, as well as a tour-preferred pear shape that makes the head look compact at address.

Price: $349.99 Stock shafts: Aldila RIP Phenom 50, Aldila RIP Phenom NL 60

FG Tour M3 Fairway Woods

WS_FG_Tour_M3_FW_Hero

Like the FG Tour M3 driver, Wilson Staff’s new fairway woods have a removable sole weight, as well as an adjustable hosel with a 2-degree range of adjustability. The heads are available in three stock lofts, 13.5, 15 and 17.5 degrees, which adjust in 0.5 degree increments to give golfers the ability to play a Wilson Staff fairway woods that measures anywhere from 12.5 to 19 degrees.

Unlike the F3 Tour M3 driver, the crown has no alignment markings, offering the clean, glare-free look prefered by purists.

Price:  $219.99 Stock shaft: Aldila RIP Phenom 65

FG Tour M3 Hybrids

WS_FG_Tour_M3_Hybrid_Skirt

The FG Tour M3 hybrids complement the Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 irons, offering a clean, compact look and three stock lofts (17, 21 and 23 degrees) to help golfers fill the gap between their shortest wood and longest iron. Like the rest of the wood lineup, they have a removable sole weight and an adjustable hosel, which offers the same 2-degree range of adjustability (in 0.5-degree increments) as the FG Tour M3 fairway woods.

Price:  $199.99 Stock shaft: Aldila RIP Phenom 85

A multi-system pouch will be included with every driver, fairway wood or hybrid purchase. Each pouch will contain an adjustability wrench, as well as 3-gram and 11-gram adjustable sole weights (the heads come with the 7-gram weight already installed).

FG Tour M3 Forged Irons

WS_FG_Tour_M3_Iron_Back_Hero

Wilson’s FG Tour M3 irons are forged from 8620 steel and have a matte black PVD finish. Their progressive cavity design moves weight lower and away from the center of the face in the long irons, which helps increase forgiveness and provides a higher launch. The short irons have a center of gravity that is higher in the head and closer to the middle of the face to provide a more penetrating flight and workability.

The irons have thin toplines throughout the set, giving them the compact look that better golfers expect from a Wilson Staff iron.

Price: $799 with steel, $899 with graphite Stock shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold XP (Steel), Aldila RIP Phenom 95 (Graphite)

Click here to see in-hand photos of the irons.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 lineup will be available at retail in January 2014.

Where can I see these clubs? I play WS irons and I would like to play there woods-don’t like to purchase anything without seeing the product. I live in New Lenox IL–30 miles SW of Chicago.

I currently own the driver , 3 wood , 5 wood , and 23 hybrid and love them til death do us part ! Just as amazing is the limited edition M3 staff bag (budget golf.com). After 4 amazing years my Staff DI-9’s are bring replaced with the M3’s ! Also adding the 19 hybrid (both due in monday !!!) . Hit the irons at Edwin Watts and didnt loose distance over my DI9’s , I gained distance considering the difference in lofts club to club (7 iron) and dispersion was consistant with the C100 . I will post some results later after I take them out on the course. Wilson Staffer for life ! Get on the Staff or feel the shaft ! Seriously !

I ordered the entire set, the phenom shafts are great, and the irons were hot. I hit them all at the PGA show and loved them. I hit every new iron there and I liked these the best. I am a 8 handicap and plan on reaching 5 by summer with these.

Bought a Shockwave driver sept 2012, but the clubhead cracked so I payed 75 euro extra and got a D-100 (sept2013) instead, this one crack also. Now Wilson UK says warrantee has expired because the initial deal was 2 years ago.. bad form! Spend some more on quality. Wilson feels great but cheap will cost you in the end.

two cracked heads? Your swing speed must be very high. In order to slow yourself down, I would opt out of the stock shafts and go for something a little heavier, 60-70 grams, and a firmer tip. This will slow down your swing to a controllable level and really get your ball speed up.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Jun 5, 2014 at 4:06 pm

Agreed. It’s not the heads. It’s you and the shafts you’re choosing. Head failure is rare all on its own. While it does happen, 2 cracked heads just might be strength vs. flex.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Jul 30, 2014 at 5:50 pm

I have to disagree, I like the driver but I have damaged two heads, cracked one and buckled another and it was done with two different shaft flexes one was stiff and other was regular.

Whilst I am a little behind the trend, I have just bought the WS FG Tour M3 driver and it did not last a bucket of balls on the driving range before the head split. Was quite spectacular flash and crack as it gave. My swing speed is only 105 mph – so nowhere near the biggest of hitters…. Club is defective design if you cannot use it to drive…

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Jan 11, 2017 at 1:39 pm

I purchased the WS FG M3 driver in 2015 and the head came off twice and was glued back on by the resident Pro. Now the head has cracked and Wilson replaced with a new super lite D200 driver. I wanted to replace or upgrade to the new WS Staff FG Tour F5 Driver but Amer Sports claim the D200 replaces the WS FG M3 Driver. I thought the D200 replaced the D100 and has been replaced by the D300. The Dxxx series is a totally different range of Drivers. Now I feel like I have a cheap and nasty light weight driver in the bag.

Tested the driver at a demo day last week. Wow, super distance for sure, and the ball flight was easy to adjust. The wilson rep spent some time with me in fitting the driver. I had a cobra adjustable driver and it did not light a candle to this one. now waiting for my pre order Wilson to arrive at end of December. For a single digit handicaper it simple had great feel and seemed to have consistent performance for me.

As an under 30 golfer that has never considered gaming a single Wilson club, I want this entire set. I currently play a variety of used stuff ping, TM, Adams, Mizuno, Nike, so I obviously have no brand loyalty. These are amazing, and make Wilson look like a legit company, not a kmart golf club.

First the guy that designed these was A Wilson Staff designer ,went to Adams put them in the limelight went back home to Wilson Staff. Now Mike is going to bring Staff back to the top where they were and will be again. It takes time to build back to the top. They have won 62 majors, more than any of the rest. So go to one of the others and you will miss being part of a legend coming back to life. I have the Fg V2 irons and they are the best Iron I’ve ever had. Waiting on the Woods with great excitement.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Sep 26, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Usually wears out pretty quick. There have been sets that lasted a season though. So it depends on the quality of the finish as well. I think I’m a full go for the rest of the woods, but the irons I may not get for that reason alone and also that I am still in love with my AP2s.

I like Wilson and think their line looks fantastic but I rather spend the money on a bigger name OEM than Wilson. Not that Wilson is not a major oem but they are a shell of what they used to be. I guess I’m just being a snob, but again would rather have Adams or MIZUNO or Cobra in my bag.

Sep 26, 2013 at 9:31 pm

Nah that’s totally personal preference. It’s your cash, spend in on stuff you like!

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Sep 27, 2013 at 10:15 am

Adams would be smaller than Wilson if it were not for TM/Adidas money. They still may be when you consider how many balls Wilson sells.Irons do look like CB2’S which means they look better than anything Adams does now. Do not let other companies marketing budgets sway you.Wilson should spent money to promote this line like they do in tennis, which they dominate. Try em all and decide.

Oct 10, 2013 at 1:06 am

Take away Wilson’s ball market and Adams easily outsells them in clubs. Not even close. Btw–I heard from a rep that Taylormade has no input in adams designs or marketing strategy. Adams has the wheel.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Dec 17, 2013 at 10:55 pm

This is untrue, Adams could not afford to forge their clubs so the TMade guys came over and designed all the new forged line up.

Sep 26, 2013 at 4:48 am

Holy cow these are good looking! I like my adams clubs, but seriously this is making me want to change! Wow wowow. Could get an entire wilson set all blacked out.

I have a guy in the golf shop I work at who is on staff with Wilson. I heard the rep talking about the players line that was coming out but I’m pleasantly surprised with the way the woods and hybrids look. The black finish on the irons looks amazing!

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Sep 25, 2013 at 7:25 pm

Those hybrids look a bit like my a12pro’s and that’s not a bad thing. Love the look on all of these.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Sep 25, 2013 at 9:29 pm

Looks a lot like the Pro a12 is 4right. I seem to recall that I heard elsewhere that one of Adam’s designers moved over to Wilson when they were bought out? I know I am extremely excited for these hybrids — adjustability and the small head. Goodness I can’t wait for these. I can assure you I’ll be bagging the 17*

Not sure what to say…Let me start with Wow!!!!!! I am sure therewill be nay sayers on the forums but really guys, not much to not like here. I am happy for an iconic brand like Wilson to get back into the spotlight.

Inside Collin Morikawa’s recent golf ball, driver, 3-wood, and “Proto” iron changes

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

As you probably know by now, Collin Morikawa switched putters after the first round of The Masters, and he ultimately went on to finish T3.

The putter was far from the only change he made last week, however, and his bag is continuing to change this week at the 2024 RBC Heritage.

On the range of The Masters, Morikawa worked closely with Adrian Reitveld, TaylorMade’s Senior Manager of Tour at TaylorMade, to find the perfect driver and 3-wood setups.

Morikawa started off 2024 by switching into TaylorMade’s Qi10 Max driver, but since went back to his faithful TaylorMade SIM – yes, the original SIM from 2020. Somehow, some way, it seems Morikawa always ends up back in that driver, which he used to win the 2020 PGA Championship , and the 2021 Open Championship .

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

At The Masters, however, Rietveld said the duo found the driver head that allowed “zero compromise” on Morikawa’s preferred fade flight and spin. To match his preferences, they landed on a TaylorMade Qi10 LS 9-degree head, and the lie angle is a touch flatter than his former SIM.

“It’s faster than his gamer, and I think what we found is it fits his desired shot shape, with zero compromise” Rietveld told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the RBC Heritage.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

Then, to replace his former SIM rocket 3-wood, Morikawa decided to switch into the TaylorMade Qi10 core model 13.5-degree rocket head, with an adjustable hosel.

“He likes the spin characteristics of that head,” Rietveld said. “Now he’s interesting because with Collin, you can turn up at a tournament, and you look at his 3-wood, and he’s changed the setting. One day there’s more loft on it, one day there’s less loft on it. He’s that type of guy. He’s not scared to use the adjustability of the club.

“And I think he felt our titanium head didn’t spin as low as his original SIM. So we did some work with the other head, just because he liked the feel of it. It was a little high launching, so we fit him into something with less loft. It’s a naughty little piece of equipment.”

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

In addition to the driver and fairway wood changes, Morikawa also debuted his new “MySymbol” jersey No. 5 TP5x golf ball at The Masters. Morikawa’s choice of symbols is likely tied to his love of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

Not enough changes for you? There’s one more.

wilson staff fg tour f5 driver adjustment

On Wednesday at the 2024 RBC Heritage, Morikawa was spotted with a new TaylorMade “Proto” 4-iron in the bag. If you recall, it’s the same model that Rory McIlroy debuted at the 2024 Valero Texas Open.

According to Morikawa, the new Proto 4-iron will replace his old P-770 hollow-bodied 4-iron.

“I used to hit my P-770 on a string, but sometimes the distance would be a little unpredictable,” Morikawa told GolfWRX.com. “This one launches a touch higher, and I feel I can predict the distance better. I know Rory replaced his P-760 with it. I’m liking it so far.”

See Morikawa’s full WITB from the 2024 RBC Heritage here.
