Enormous, Wild Drive-Thru Safari Coming To Upstate New York

Have you ever been on a safari? It's something that we all tend to associate with the wilds of Africa but a much closer-to-home version is coming to 100+ acres with 3 miles of roadways owned by Animal Adventure Park outside of Harpersville, NY. The acreage is right across the street from the current preserve and is almost ready to open and is still being prepared for a big drive-thru safari experience that will be one of the northeast's biggest.

So the big question is, what will you get to see on the "Preserve at Animal Adventure" as it's being called? According to Animal Adventure Park, there will be a multitude of sort of wild beasts to encounter from the safety of your car: giraffes, rhinos, deer, bison, ostrich, zebras, camels, and much more.

This project with a price tag of around $2 million, featuring about 250 animals to start according to Spectrum News , has plans to expand to around 600 different animals as time goes by.

This property for Animal Adventure Park which was purchased in 2017 by owner John Patch has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings in just five years and this latest addition of The Preserve at Animal Adventure to Animal Adventure Park adds a whole new dimension to this Southern Tier attraction. The plan is to open at the end of this month.

You can follow the project progress at The Preserve at Animal Adventure on Facebook or at  theanimaladventurepreserve.com .

The Wild Animal Park to open this week with new drive-thru safari

  • Updated: May. 21, 2020, 1:59 p.m. |
  • Published: May. 18, 2020, 4:21 p.m.

After having to delay opening this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Wild Animal Park in Chittenango has innovated a new way to see its animals — a drive-thru safari.

The Wild announced on Facebook that it would be opening up its adjacent farm at 9 a.m. Thursday to the public for a drive-thru experience.

“It’s going to be a one of a kind experience, in which you see animals roaming in large enclosures,” the post said.

After the drive-thru safari opens on Thursday, it will be open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. The cost will be $12 for adults, $10 for kids, and 2 and under are free. For now, individuals are able to use their season passes and any pre-purchased day passes as well.

The safari will be a little over a mile drive and you can expect to see a wide variety of animals, including some of The Wild’s newest residents, African Watusi.

Some of our newest residents that will be ready to greet you very soon..... 🚗 🚙 Posted by The Wild Animal Park on  Monday, May 18, 2020

The Wild had hoped to be open by May 15 for its 10th season, but state laws have continued to keep it closed. Places for recreation, such as zoos, fall under phase four of New York state’s “unpause” plan. However, Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave the green light for drive-in movie theaters to open last weekend.

During the shutdown, The Wild has continued to care for all of its animals. The lack of revenue spurred ingenuity to raise funds to support the animals, including a new online shop filled with retail items, such as limited edition shirts and hoodies. It is also offering animal adoptions which includes a stuffed animal, a certificate of adoption and a fun fact sheet about the specific animal.

With the start of the new drive-thru safari, The Wild has launched a new Facebook page to watch for updates at The Wild Animal Drive Thru Safari .

Aquarium of Niagara Falls

Most people miss the Aquarium of Niagara Falls when they visit the American side of Niagara Falls. Most likely because it is not located in the touristy part of the city that draws so many visitors. The aquarium has an impressive collection of both fresh and saltwater exhibits as well as penguin feedings and seal education shows. The aquarium also happens to be a marine mammal rescue facility.

The aquarium has two different animal encounters that visitors can purchase. Meet a Seal and Humboldt Penguin Encounter. Both encounters are $65 and only available on the weekends. These are extraordinary experiences that allow children and adults to be able to touch and play with these adorable animals.

Admission: Adults $13.00, children (3-12) $9.00

Buffalo Zoo

This is truly one of the nicest zoos in New York State and incidentally also happens to be the 3 rd oldest zoo in the United States. This charming zoo has a huge array of animals in beautiful, well maintained enclosures. The Buffalo Zoo is actively involved in conservation and education. One of the neatest features of this zoo is the number of indoor exhibits, which are handy for the harsh western New York winters. It allows this zoo to be a year-round destination and not just a summer time fun spot.

The Buffalo Zoo has two (sometimes 3) very affordable animal encounters. Each encounter is $10 however, visitors need to arrive early, pretty much when the zoo opens if they hope to sign up for one of these encounters. The cost of these encounters are in addition to the regular admission fee. Visitors are able to meet and feed the zoo’s giraffe family or spend time with the rhinos behind the scenes inside the rhino enclosure. The zoo sometimes also allows visitors to meet their Asian elephants.

Admission: Adults (ages 13-64) $12.50, Children (ages 2-12) $9.25, Seniors $10.25

Visitors embark (with their cup of animal food) on a 55-minute safari that features over 30 different species such as Texas longhorns, zebras, camels and water buffalos. These animals will actually approach the safari vehicle as it travels through the 60-acre park and can be hand fed. Guests are also welcome to visit the Small Animal Adventure, which consist of small and more docile animals, which can also be fed. This is a big hit with little adventurers who dream about going on a safari.

The Wild Animal Park

Located just outside Syracuse, New York, is a private animal park that can rival any zoo in the state. The Wild Animal Park has more big cats in one place than any zoo in New York. Patrons can purchase a token to buy carrots to feed the giraffes face to face from a platform that puts them at eye level with the giraffes. Visitors can also purchase a solo cup full of food to feed many of the other animals in the park including baby goats, camels, zebras and a water buffalo. During summer weekends, guest have also had the special opportunity to hold a baby kangaroo. This special encounter was only $10 and a truly once in a lifetime experience, complete with a souvenir photo.

This park also has a bounce area for the little ones to burn off some of that extra energy. The bounce park is an extra charge but well worth it for tired parents who need a breather.

What is New York weather like for 2024 solar eclipse? See cloud cover map

By Giorgio Panetta

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 4:52 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  All eyes will be on the sky Monday for the 2024 total solar eclipse, but will the weather cooperate ?

History is knocking on our door as the phenomenon known as the solar eclipse rapidly approaches. It's all the buzz -- from fake glasses to when & where the best views will be , as well as the cautions, concerns and the intangibles. CBS New York's Lonnie Quinn will be travelling up to Lake Placid, New York to report on a potentially premium experience.

  • Solar eclipse 2024 live updates and scenes from the path of totality

"I have covered numerous partial eclipses, but I have never experienced totality. This will be a bucket list item fort me. The real difference is...with a partial eclipse you must always keep the glasses on. Once totality takes over, I will be able to remove my glasses and simply experience something unique and unparalleled here on earth," he said.

  • What time does solar eclipse start, peak and end in New York?

NYC eclipse forecast

solar-eclipse-2024-forecast.png

New York City is outside the path of totality -- just 10 percent shy -- but it should still turn out to be a substantial experience. Luckily, the weather forecast is on our side. High pressure is forecast to bring us a dry day with temperatures in the 60s. A few high clouds may drift by, but we are rain-free. We can expect mostly sunny skies, with a high around 64.

  • Join these solar eclipse events in NYC & across New York state

NYC eclipse viewing timeline: New York City will be able to see darkening skies around 2:50 p.m., with skies lightening up again around 4 p.m. Peak coverage will be at 90 percent at 3:25 p.m.

Upstate N.Y. eclipse forecast

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

The Upstate forecast is a little iffy regarding clouds vs. sun. During springtime, the state gets a wide variety of weather, and we just got through a very powerful Nor'easter that dumped snow in parts of the Adirondacks. Grey skies and unseasonably cool temperatures are the norm, but, thankfully, there are no major systems Monday.

  • Best places to see today's solar eclipse in NYC, New York state

However, the shield of high pressure that keeps New York City mostly sunny is less effective closer to the Great Lakes. Places like Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Rochester have a slightly higher chance of clouds marring the view at 40 to 50 percent. The good news is they are mainly high and thin clouds. Hopefully, luck is on our side, and any lake effect clouds are broken up by a south wind. Fingers crossed.

Rochester looks mostly to partly sunny with a high around 58, and Niagara Falls should be partly sunny with a high of 56.

Upstate viewing timeline: Skies will darken in Rochester around 2:05 p.m. before lightening around 4:33 p.m. The city will experience 3.38 seconds of totality at 3:20:48 p.m.

How will the eclipse impact animals, driving and vision?

The moon will pass between the Sun & Earth for a few fleeting moments, blocking or partially blocking the sunlight for up to 4 and a half minutes. Experts and enthusiasts alike claim the celestial event will transform day into night, revealing the stars.

Birds and bees could be silenced, and deer and other animals may exhibit unusual behavior. While there are no proven effects on humans, you're going to want the proper eyewear, as a retinal burn is absolutely possible if you stare directly at the sun even for only a few seconds. If you need eclipse glasses, NYC libraries will be distributing.

  • Can the eclipse impact your astrological sign? An astrologer weighs in

If you are driving Monday afternoon, regardless of location, please be vigilant -- Don't look up. Everyone, including their pets, will likely be distracted by the event. In fact, JAMA recently revealed a study, in conjunction with data from the NTSB, that showed during the 2017 solar eclipse, car crash fatalities were up significantly surrounding the eclipse exposure interval.

Our last total solar eclipse was fairly recent, just a few moons ago in 2017. However, the next one passing the continental U.S. will not happen until 2044. The next New York state total eclipse will not occur until 2079.

This is so cool. Best of luck to all of our "umbraphiles!"
