Your last minute shopping list is definitely taken care of with all of these shops in Sydney International Airport.

If you are eyeing a store or two that happen to be at a different terminal from the one that your flight is destined to leave from or arrive at, you would be happy to find out that getting between terminals is actually a simpler task than one might think.

T2 and T3 are connected to one another, so if you want to move between them, you can do so by taking a short stroll. In general, the transfer between them should only require a 10-minute walk.

However, you should consider boarding one of the inter-terminal transit alternatives if you want to travel between T1 and the other two terminals.

You can take the paid Link Train or board a free shuttle bus. You can even use a taxi or a public transportation bus. Just make sure you arrive at your location on time, regardless of whatever option you select!

Duty-Free shops at Sydney Airport

T1, commonly known as the international terminal, is where most of the Duty-Free shops are situated.

The stores are spread out across the terminal, and the majority of them are open from six in the morning until nine thirty at night.

Some are located after security clearance, while others are located before security clearance.

Australia’s first domestic airport terminal department store concept in Sydney Airport’s Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, a Heinemann exclusive, is now open. The concept spans a total of over 2,270sqm across Sydney Airport Domestic Terminals 2 and 3 and boasts the largest Beauty brand line-up of any domestic airport in Australia, as well as a full range of Fashion, Accessories, Watches and Jewellery, Chocolates and Sweets, Gifting, and Wines and Spirits.

“The new Heinemann stores, an Australia-first concept, is an integral part of our ongoing efforts to create a world-class passenger experience for our domestic travellers,” said Mark Zaouk, Executive General Manager – Commercial, Sydney Airport. “We are delighted to be able to extend our partnership with Heinemann across all three of our terminals and continuously elevate our retail offer for passengers.”

Heinemann will progressively introduce more brands, retail concepts and value-added services ahead of its domestic airport stores’ grand opening slated for the first quarter of 2024.

Arriving at Sydney Airport

There are 2 international arrivals at Sydney International Airport: A and B. They are located on the ground floor. Sydney Airport is not as busy as the major airports in Asia, Europe or the USA and easy to navigate. After passport control you will get to the Luggage Claim. When you pick up your bags you will have to pass through customs bag check and then finally you walk into the Arrival Hall.

Arrivals A and B are just a short 1-minute walk away from each other. It doesn’t matter where you are arrive there are plenty of options for buying a prepaid sim card.

Where to buy a sim card at Sydney Airport

Honestly I have never been to an airport where it is so easy to buy a prepaid sim card. Regardless where you arrive A or B there are more than a handful shops that sell prepaid sim cards. In total there are more than 10 shops across Arrival A and B that sell sim cards. 

Buying a sim card at Sydney Airport is therefore very easy, but finding the best sim card deal is a little overwhelming. 

There are several Sim Planet stores, a Lebara store in the WH Smith shop, official Vodafone and Optus retail stores and some random sim card shops that sell a wide variety of Australian sim cards for tourists. 

Most of the sim card stores are open from 06.00 am until 10.00 pm and accept payments by international credit cards.

Prices Australia sim cards at Melbourne Airport

Sim card prices and data packages constantly change. Traveltomtom tries to keep this article as up to date as possible. New input in the comments below is always appreciated. Thank you!

At the time of research in January 2024: $1 AUD = 0.68 USD and $1 USD is $1.46 AUD

Sim Planet is a reseller and therefore they offer sim cards from Vodafone, Optus, Crown Mobile, etc.

Their main products are a Vodafone or Optus prepaid sim card for $25 AUD ($17 USD) with $60 AUD and unlimited calling and texting in Australia included.

When I asked the friendly girl what she would recommend she said they are both the same. Well let me tell you that is not completely true!

Vodafone prepaid sim cards say that where available you can use 5G. However, with this Optus prepaid sim card deal you can only use 4G. That said, Optus has a much larger 4G/5G network in Australia compared to Vodafone.

Circles Life

This is not the official name of the shop that has a red/white striped counter. It is right in front of you when walking out of Arrivals B, but it has no name. Here you can buy Lycamobile prepaid sim cards as well as a wide range of postpaid plans for those interested.

Lycamobile prepaid sim card deals:

• 70 GB data + unlimited calls/text for 28 days = $30 AUD - $20.5 USD
• 100 GB data + unlimited calls/text for 28 days = $40 AUD
• 160 GB data + unlimited calls/text for 28 days = $50 AUD - $34 USD

Lycamobile is also an MVNO and they operate on the 3G and 4G network of Telstra in Australia.

They also have a lot of postpaid plans, but they also have postpaid plans for Australia at the Vodafone and Optus store.

In the WH Smith shop near Arrivals B there is a Lebara store and they sell a wide range of prepaid sim cards for Australia.

Lebara is also an MVNO and they operate on the network of Vodafone in Australia. They offer the following data plans at Sydney Airport:

• 8 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $14.90 AUD - $10 USD
• 25 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $24.90 AUD
• 60 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $29.90 AUD - $20 USD
• 80 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $39.90 AUD
• 100 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $49.90 AUD
• 120 GB data + unlimited calls/text = $69.90 AUD - $48 USD

There is a lot to say when comparing all these Australian prepaid sim cards but many plans and data packages look alike.

Personally I always buy a sim card from an official retail store rather than from a reseller and I also prefer to use a mobile internet operator rather than an MVNO like Lycamobile, Lebara, etc. These MVNO’s use the network of one of the official mobile internet providers.

As many prepaid sim card deals look similar let’s also have a quick look at the mobile network coverage. If we compare the 4G/5G network coverage in Australia of the mobile internet providers it shows that Optus and Telstra have a better 4G/5G network than Vodafone.

Rush to evacuate thousands as Indonesia volcano erupts; S’pore flights among those cancelled

MANADO, Indonesia – Indonesian rescuers raced to evacuate thousands of people on April 18 after a volcano erupted five times, forcing the authorities to close a nearby airport and issue a warning about falling debris that could cause a tsunami.

The crater of Mount Ruang flamed with lava against a backdrop of lightning bolts overnight after erupting four times on April 17, forcing the authorities to raise its alert level to the highest of a four-tiered system.

The volcano on a remote island in Indonesia’s outermost region was still billowing a column of smoke in the morning on April 18, prompting the authorities to shut the nearest international airport in Manado city on Sulawesi island for 24 hours.

Houses on the neighbouring remote island of Tagulandang were riddled with holes from falling volcanic rocks, and residents were preparing to leave at least temporarily.

“The current condition, particularly the road condition, is covered by volcanic material,” local rescuer Ikram Al Ulah told AFP by phone from the Tagulandang seaport.

“Currently, many people are still wandering around. Maybe to evacuate precious goods from their house.”

The authorities said they were rushing to evacuate 11,000 residents from the area around Tagulandang, home to around 20,000 people.

Some residents were already trying to flee in a panic, according to officials.

“Last night, people evacuated on their own but without direction due to the volcano’s eruption and materials in the form of small rocks that fell, so the people scattered to find evacuation routes,” local search and rescue agency official Jandry Paendong said in a statement on April 18.

He said 20 staff were helping evacuate residents along the coastline near the volcano on rubber boats.

The authorities also evacuated a prison on Tagulandang island, ferrying 17 inmates along with 11 officials and 19 residents by boat to Likupang seaport in northern Sulawesi island, according to the rescuer Ikram.

The evacuation was requested by the prison chief because the facility sits directly across from the volcano, said the rescuer.

Tourists and residents were warned to remain outside a 6km exclusion zone.

More than 800 people were initially taken to safety from Ruang to nearby Tagulandang island after the first eruption on April 16, before four more eruptions on April 17 prompted evacuations from that island.

Mr Paendong called for more boats and equipment so that his team could “carry out evacuation for people in the coast or near the coast” facing the volcano.

Tsunami warning

The authorities also warned of a possible tsunami as a result of the eruptions.

“The communities in Tagulandang island, particularly those residing near the beach, (need) to be on alert for the potential ejection of incandescent rocks, hot cloud discharges and tsunami caused by the collapse of the volcano’s body into the sea,” Indonesian volcanology agency chief Hendra Gunawan said in a statement on April 17.

The authorities’ fears were compounded by previous experience.

In 2018, the crater of Mount Anak Krakatoa between Java and Sumatra islands partly collapsed when a major eruption sent huge chunks of the volcano sliding into the ocean, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 400 people and injured thousands.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation, experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through South-east Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The impact of Mount Ruang’s eruption led to the closure of Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado city, located more than 100km from the volcano, for 24 hours until the evening on April 18.

The airport runways were shut “due to the spread of volcanic ash which could endanger flight safety”, Mr Ambar Suryoko, head of the Manado region airport authority office, said in a statement.

The airport hosts airlines that fly to Singapore and cities in South Korea and China.

“All flights... impacted because the airport is affected by the eruption of Mount Ruang, volcanic ash,” 29-year-old Dimas, an airport officer in Manado, told AFP by phone.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Changi Airport Group said flights to and from Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, as well as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri in Malaysia, may be affected as a result of the volcanic activity. These destinations are served by AirAsia, Royal Brunei Airlines, Scoot and Singapore Airlines.

It advised travellers to check the Changi Aiport website for the latest flight information, and those affected can contact the airlines for alternative arrangements.

Singapore budget carrier Scoot cancelled four flights that were scheduled to depart on April 18. The flights were between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, and Singapore and Miri.

“Scoot apologises for the inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority,” Scoot said in response to queries.

“We will continue to monitor the situation in East Malaysia and will adjust our flight schedule as necessary,” Scoot said, adding that it is assisting affected customers.

Budget airline AirAsia cancelled flights to and from nine airports including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei after the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia issued a volcanic ash hazard warning on April 18.

Flights from 10am on April 18 until 8am on April 19 will be cancelled, AirAsia said in a release.

Flag carrier Malaysia Airlines said on Facebook that it cancelled 18 flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sabah, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak, on April 18. ST has contacted Malaysia Airlines for more information. AFP

Nine men — including two Air Canada employees — are facing charges for allegedly stealing $14.5 million in gold in a “sensational” heist worthy of a “Netflix series” at a Canadian airport.

Peel Regional Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of five men and the warrants for four others on the one-year anniversary of the caper at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

The whopping amount of loot was stolen from a shipping container at the airport in what’s considered the largest gold theft in Canadian history.

“This story is a sensational one and one which probably, we jokingly say, belongs in a Netflix series,”  Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said at a press conference, according to City News Toronto .

Two of the nine suspects — Simran Preet Panesar, 31, and 54-year-old Parmpal Sidhu — worked for Air Canada.

Panesar had even given police a tour of the facility prior to them knowing he was involved in the alleged heist, police said, according to CP 24.

The other seven are: Durante King-Mclean, 25, Prasath Paramalingam, 34, Archit Grover, 36, Arsalan Chaudhary, 42, all four of Brampton; Amit Jalota, 40, of Oakville, Ammad Chaudhary, 43, of Georgetown, and Ali Raza, 37, of Toronto, according to the local outlet.

Grover, Arsalan Chaudhary, Panesar, and King-Mclean, who is currently in US custody, are still wanted by Canadian police.

They collectively face 19 charges, according to City News Toronto.

The nine men allegedly stole more than $20 million CAD, or roughly $14.5 million USD, in gold, as well as more than $2 million in foreign banknotes after King-Mclean drove a truck into the warehouse after giving a man a duplicated waybill.

The waybill had been reprinted on an Air Canada printer and said King-Mclean would be picking up a shipment of seafood that had actually been picked up the day before, according to The New York Times.

He then allegedly loaded up the shipment of 6,600 gold bars and banknotes — which were flown in from Switzerland on an Air Canada flight on April 17, 2023 — onto the truck two hours after it had arrived at the airport, according to The Times.

“They needed people inside Air Canada to facilitate this theft,” Detective Mike Mavity said at a press conference.

A Brink’s truck arrived to pick up the shipment with the real waybill shortly after. The company filed a lawsuit against Air Canada, alleging a thief had used falsified documents to get into the holding facility.

Air Canada denied the allegations that its employees did not properly examine the document and claimed it had not taken out insurance on the valuable cargo, according to City News Toronto.

Most of the stolen gold had been melted down and police recovered just a fraction of the haul — six bracelets valued at $89,000 CAD, or $65,000 USD, according to The Times.

Around $434,000 CAD, or roughly $315,100 USD, was also seized during the investigation that is believed to have been part of the profit they made off the metal, according to CP 24.

Police showed two handwritten lists of payouts to the men involved in the theft.

Chief Duraiappah believes the gold was used, in part, to buy guns and smuggle them into Canada, which is how King-Mclean got arrested outside the country.

The 25-year-old is currently in US custody after being pulled over in September in Pennsylvania on suspected motor vehicle violations, but is still wanted in Canada for heist-related charges.

Sixty-five firearms were found in his rental vehicle and were believed to be destined for Canada. Eleven of the weapons were stolen and two were fully automatic, according to City News Toronto.

King-Mclean and Paramalingam face conspiracy to engage in international firearms trafficking charges in the US.

US authorities believe Paramalingam orchestrated his partner in crime’s illegal entry into the US and had given him funding to purchase the firearms in Florida, Georgia, and elsewhere, according to the US Department of Justice.

Grover and Jalisa Edwards, 25, of Fort Lauderdale, were charged in the US as an accessory to King-Mclean’s crimes. Edwards is not wanted in Canada.

F.A.A. Will Require More Rest for Air Traffic Controllers

The agency announced new rules to address the dangers of exhaustion for controllers, who often work grueling round-the-clock schedules.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that it was taking significant steps to mitigate the risks posed by exhaustion among air traffic controllers, after a series of close calls last year raised alarms about the safety of the U.S. air travel system.

Mike Whitaker, the F.A.A. administrator, issued a directive increasing the number of hours that controllers are required to rest between shifts from nine hours to 10, and 12 hours before a midnight shift. He said he hoped to put the changes in place within 90 days.

The announcement came as the air safety regulator released a 114-page report from an expert panel that assessed the risks associated with air traffic controller fatigue.

“We are committed to a sustained effort to address controller fatigue and ensure our airspace is the safest in the world,” Mr. Whitaker said in a statement.

The F.A.A. established the panel in December in the wake of a New York Times investigation that revealed how a nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers had resulted in an exhausted and demoralized work force that was increasingly prone to making dangerous mistakes. Many air traffic controllers were working round-the-clock schedules that had pushed them to the psychological and physical brink.

The Times reported that virtually all of the nation’s air traffic control sites were understaffed, forcing many controllers to work 10-hour days, six days a week.

“Growing the work force continues to be a top priority, and over the past two years we’ve pulled out all of the stops to accelerate hiring,” Mr. Whitaker said on Friday, adding, “Getting more qualified individuals into our air traffic facilities will help alleviate the demands on the current work force.”

A series of Times articles last year showed how the nation’s aviation safety system was under mounting stress . While the last fatal crash involving a major U.S. airline was more than a decade ago, potentially dangerous close calls had been happening, on average, multiple times a week last year, and some air traffic controllers said they feared that a deadly crash was inevitable. The Times found that errors by air traffic controllers had been one major factor.

Just this week, there were at least two incidents that appeared to involve air traffic controller mistakes at two of the country’s major airports. On Thursday at Ronald Reagan National Airport outside Washington, a Southwest Airlines flight was instructed to cross the same runway that a JetBlue Airways plane, Flight 1554, was cleared by a controller to take off from.

As the JetBlue plane accelerated, another controller yelled: “JetBlue 1554, stop! JetBlue 1554, stop!” The plane abruptly aborted its takeoff, but it came within as little as 312 feet of the Southwest plane, according to preliminary F.A.A. safety reports and recordings reviewed by The Times, putting it moments away from a potential crash. The controller who cleared the Southwest plane to cross the runway did so without prior coordination with the other controller.

The controller who cleared the JetBlue plane to take off was in training, according to one of the reports, and the controller who cleared the Southwest plane to cross the same runway had been working for more than two hours straight, longer than the F.A.A. recommends.

A system designed to alert controllers to potential collisions on runways, known as ASDE-X, appears not to have triggered an alert, according to reports on the incident.

The other incident, which has not been previously reported, occurred on Wednesday at Kennedy International Airport in New York, when a Swiss International Air Lines flight was cleared to take off on the same runway that four other planes were instructed to cross. The Swiss plane accelerated 800 feet down the runway before the pilot, citing “traffic on the runway,” aborted its takeoff to avoid a potential collision, according to preliminary F.A.A. safety reports and a recording.

The controller who cleared the Swiss flight had told the other controller to have the four planes cross after the Swiss flight, but the controller instructed the planes to cross ahead of the Swiss flight instead.

The F.A.A. said it would investigate the incidents. The National Transportation Safety Board said it had opened an investigation into the episode at Kennedy and was gathering information regarding the one at Reagan National.

In the report released by the F.A.A. on Friday, the expert panel identified 58 “opportunities” for efforts to address the risks posed by fatigue, including coming up with a plan to eliminate a common rotating schedule known as the rattler.

Under the rattler schedule, a controller might start his first shift of the week in the afternoon, with subsequent shifts beginning progressively earlier. The week would then culminate with a 24-hour period in which the controller worked both an early morning shift and, as few as eight hours later, overnight duty. Many controllers told The Times that, coupled with mandatory overtime, the schedule was exceptionally grueling.

In a statement, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the union that represents controllers, said it was encouraged that the F.A.A. was paying attention to fatigue but was concerned that the changes the agency announced would constrain the controller work force and affect air travel.

“F.A.A. has not modeled these changes to determine what unintended consequences they may have to the already strained air traffic control staffing coverage,” the union said, adding that it was worried that applying the new rules immediately “may lead to coverage holes in air traffic facilities’ schedules.”

Nonetheless, Skytrax has received some criticism over the years with one report in 2015  from a travel industry news site suggesting that the organisation had inflated the figures of its survey participants. Skytrax also received backlash in 2019 after it updated the ratings of certain airlines, including downgrading Turkish Airlines to three stars – prompting those in the aviation community to question Skytrax's ranking methods.
