Top 20 most valuable travel companies in the world.

In this article, we will discuss the top 20 most valuable travel companies in the world. You can skip our detailed analysis of the global leisure travel market, and go directly to see the Top 5 Most Valuable Travel Companies in the World .

After being severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, global travel and tourism continued its recovery in 2023. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) most recent statistics show that between January and September 2023, approximately 975 million international tourists traveled. Compared to the same period in 2022, this is a noteworthy 38% growth. Additionally, during this time, worldwide tourism recovered to 87% of pre-pandemic levels.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Brainy Insights the global leisure travel market was valued at $1.2 trillion in 2022. The market is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.8% from 2023 to 2032, reaching a value of $8.6 trillion at the conclusion of the predicted period. The main drivers of this expansion are the growing number of tourists travelling abroad and the rising standards of living of the general public. The rapid integration of big data analytics, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence in travel and tourism is another factor driving the sector. However, the report points out that the leisure travel market can be significantly impacted by geopolitical unrest.

In terms of market share by age group segment in 2022, the 22–31 years segment was in the lead with a share of almost 32%. The report also mentions that, with a 38.7% market revenue share in 2022, Asia Pacific emerged as the largest global leisure travel market. The expansion of the market is anticipated to be driven by the increasing disposable income in the region, particularly in China and India.

Building up on this, according to a global survey by Hilton and Ipsos of over 10,000 travelers from nine countries, the number one reason to travel in 2024 for most of the respondents was to rest and recharge with an emphasis on sleep. The survey also found that 64% of global travelers intend to prioritize leisure travel in 2024 by cutting back on other personal expenses.

On the other hand, travelers are focusing primarily on dining experiences while they budget for 2024, per Hilton. Exploration and adventure ranked second in importance among travelers (47%) after dining experiences, with Millennials and Gen Zers devoting a bigger percentage of their budget than other generations for these experiences.

The survey further revealed that an astounding 80% of global travelers think it's essential to be able to plan their entire trip online, with 76% appreciating travel apps that reduce the friction and stress of travel. Additionally, it also highlighted that there has been a significant shift in the way individuals do business since the pandemic. Consequently, new trends like blended leisure have emerged, and over one-third of Gen Z and Millennial business travelers plan to extend their trips in order to take advantage of free time before or after work.

Having said that, today we will be taking at a look the top most valuable travel companies in the world which include Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG ), Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABNB ), and Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR ) among others.

“Ryanair Holdings plc (NASDAQ:RYAAY) (Ireland), a European ultra-low-cost airline, was the top contributor to the Fund’s performance this quarter. Ryanair released strong results for the first half of fiscal-year 2024 and was accompanied by an even stronger outlook, in our view. The company’s revenue grew 30% year over year, and average fares increased by 24% to EUR 58, driven by record demand and constrained capacity at European peers. Total passengers flown expanded 11% year over year to 105.4 million, and management is on track to maintain its target of 183.5 million passengers for 2024, depending on Boeing’s ability to meet its delivery commitments. Management is expecting full-year 2024 net income to be between EUR 1.85-2.05 billion ahead of the EUR 1.82 billion consensus estimate. The company’s strong free cash flow levels and balance sheet allowed Ryanair to reinstate a EUR 400 million dividend (35 cents per share). We spoke with CEO Michael O’Leary about additional uses for its excess capital and were happy to hear about an incremental EUR 1.5 billion return to shareholders starting in 2025. We continue to be optimistic about Ryanair’s future.”

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

The companies that made the list have the skills and connections to create itineraries that reflect their clients' personal interests. No. 3 VBT Bicycling Vacations curates two-wheeled trips all over the globe . One reader said, "Their staff make all the difference." No. 2 Mountain Lodges of Peru puts together highly personalized trekking adventures to Machu Picchu. As another reader exclaimed, "This is the way to visit Machu Picchu!"

But at the top of the list is Quasar Expeditions. Though primarily known for its cruises (the company won the small-ship ocean cruises category this year), it also operates a roster of dynamic safari-style excursions in South America. Read on to find out what sets it apart and which other companies join it on this year's list of the best tour operators in the world.

1. Quasar Expeditions

Quasar Expeditions is for adventurers. The highly specialized itineraries are designed to make guests feel like they're James Cook or Charles Darwin. "Quasar Expeditions' guides are the ultimate, passionate gatekeepers to the Galápagos Islands," one reader said. "Their enthusiasm and love of the islands and the wildlife encourages you to share in their passion and desire to conserve the natural beauty and habitat of the area while still allowing low-impact tourism." Another raved, "Excellent isn't a high enough rating to describe our experience with Quasar Expeditions. Extraordinary in every way!" And while Quasar is best known for its Galápagos trips, it gets high marks for its Patagonia itineraries, which takes guests into the best parts of Chile's Torres del Paine and Argentina's Los Glaciares — two of South America's most spectacular national parks.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. The Top 10 Travel Companies in the World in 2024

L et’s give thanks to the top 10 largest travel companies in the world, which help you book a plane, hotel, cruise, or rental car through a single web page. These companies can be dedicated to both businesses and consumers alike and many times dedicated to both. These companies also help contribute to the global economy in a big way. For example, Expedia is a major contributor to the travel industry’s nearly $7.7 trillion global economic contribution in 2022.

Beginning with the widespread adoption of the Internet, the travel industry has split into two different sectors. A traditional travel agency is a one-to-one interaction with a travel agent, which has existed for decades. In today’s Internet age, the largest travel companies are all online and skip personal interaction. Instead, these companies opt for integrated systems that work for every method of travel.

When you’re planning your next trip, the 10 largest travel companies might help you find the best place to visit.

Booking Holdings

Once known as The Priceline Group, Booking Holdings was launched in 1997 with the introduction of Priceline.com.

Today, Booking Holdings is home to some of the best-known travel brands in the world. These brands include Priceline, Booking.com, Kayak.com, Agoda.com, CheapFlights, Rentalcars.com, and OpenTable. Operating in over 220 countries in 40 different languages, there are more than 28 million listings in total. This number includes hotels, homes, and apartments under the Booking Holdings name.

In 2022, gross sales exceeded $121.3 billion, up 158% from 2021 thanks to a resurgence in travel post-pandemic. That’s on top of more than 981 million room nights booked across the entirety of Booking Holdings’ portfolio.

More than 20,300 employees call Booking Holdings home across 140 different nationalities. Headed by CEO Glenn D. Fogel, Booking Holdings calls Norwalk, Connecticut home for its global headquarters.

Expedia Group

The second largest travel company in the world by gross sales, Expedia Group relinquished its title in 2022 with $74.6 billion in gross sales. Available in more than 70 countries, Expedia is home to familiar brands like Expedia, Hotels.com, VRBO, Travelocity, Hotwire, Orbitz, CheapTickets, Trivago, and more. Focusing solely on leisure travel, Expedia divested itself of corporate travel activity in 2021 after selling to American Express Global Business Travel.

All in total, Expedia Group is composed of more than 200 travel sites in more than 70 countries. This massive number accounts for more than 500+ airlines, cruise lines, and car rental companies. This means Expedia customers have 3 million properties to look at from the Expedia Group portfolio.

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Expedia is run by Bary Diller after taking over the company in 2020.

American Express Global Business Travel (GBT)

As the world’s leading B2B travel platform, American Express Global Business Travel shouldn’t be confused with American Express Travel. The latter of which focuses on leisure trips.

While the company uses the American Express name, the credit giant only has a 50% ownership stake in the company. The remaining 50% is currently owned by a private investor group. Headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, GBT had $23 billion in sales in 2022, easily solidifying it as one of the largest travel companies in the world.

More than 18,000 employees help support both the software and services the company provides to its huge roster of global corporate clients. Everything from travel and expenses to meetings and events can be managed through its platform. In May 2021, GBT extended its reach when it acquired Egencia, Expedia’s corporate travel division, and Ovation Travel Group in January 2021.

After both acquisitions, GBT operates in 140 countries and has grown by leaps and bounds since 2014.

Founded in 2006, BCD Travel is a subsidiary of the BCD Group based out of the Netherlands, bringing in more than $16 billion in sales in 2022. The company was formed when the BCD Group acquired TQ3 Travel Solutions Management Holding and The Travel Company. Post acquisitions, the company changed its name to BCD Travel.

Focusing heavily on corporate accounts, BCD Travel looks to help travelers stay safe and productive while on the road. They claim a client retention rate of 98% all while operating in 109 countries worldwide.

Headquartered in the Netherlands where it exists as the largest travel company in the country, BCD Travel also operates out of Atlanta, London, and Singapore through CEO John Snyder. Nearly 13,000 employees call BCD Travel home and operate subsidiaries focused on global meetings and events appropriately called BCD Meetings & Events.

Formerly known as Carlson Wagonlit Travel, CWT is primarily a business-focused travel company. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the company achieved $13.6 billion in sales in 2022.

CWT prides itself on simplifying corporate travel so employees don’t get bogged down in software troubles. Between business travel, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, and event management, CWT is a full-service solution for corporate organizations large and small. More than 18,000 employees support travel in over 145 different countries.

As one of the largest travel companies in the world, CWT provides travel support for more than 33% of the publicly listed companies on the S&P 500 and around 33% of companies listed on the FTSE 100. Looking to grow CWT even larger in a post-COVID world is President and CEO Patrick Andreson, who was appointed to the position in May 2022 after serving as Chief Commercial Officer.

Flight Centre Travel Group

The sixth largest travel company in the world and the first not to be headquartered in the United States, Flight Centre Travel Group is located in Brisbane, Australia. Founded in 1982, Flight Centre Travel Group operates in distinct regions: Australia and New Zealand, North America, Asia, Europe, and South Africa. On top of these locations, the company’s global corporate travel management network extends its reach to 90 countries through strategic licensing agreements.

Generating more than $11.7 billion in sales in 2022, Flight Centre Travel Group employs more than 15,000 people to support its huge reach. Flight Centre’s emphasis on being passionate about its love of travel has helped drive its success under CEO Graham “Skroo” Turner.

Turner oversees more than 35 separate and unique brands that all live under the Flight Centre Travel Group umbrella servicing both leisure and corporate travel.

American Express Travel

A subsidiary of American Express Company, the credit card company, American Express Travel is a dedicated travel site for leisure travel. Founded in 1850, the American Express Company is now headquartered in New York. American Express has been helping customers travel since 1891 and introduced the first traveler check when American Express Travel was established in 1915. Their 2022 sales totaled more than $9.2 billion.

The company’s focus is on flights, hotels, and combos of the two, as well as rental cars and cruises. While users of the site don’t need to use an American Express card to book, there are multiple benefits to doing so, including rewards programs with accruing points that can be used for future travel.

There are also different perks to booking through American Express Travel, such as special offers for certain hotel brands and lower fares through international airline partnerships.

Internova Travel Group

Internova is a privately owned company that services customers around the world and across various travel methods. Headquartered in New York, the company has more than 20 different brands across various aspects of the travel industry. As of 2022, Internova offers more than 100,000 travel advisors worldwide across 6,000 company-owned travel agencies. These travel advisors helped the company drive $5 billion in sales in 2022.

Founded in 2008, Internova supports travel to more than 80 countries through its primary brands like Travel Leaders Corporate, Travel Leaders Network, CruCon Cruise Outlet, Cruise Specialists, Road Trips, and more. Each brand has a focus that fits into one of Internova’s four main travel categories: Corporate and Entertainment, Premium Travel, Network, Host and Vacation , and Hotel Wholesale.

Founder and Chairman Michael Batt transitioned the company from Travel Leaders Group over to Internova in 2020 to unite all of the company’s business units into one modern brand.

Russia has a lot of specialties attached to it. From ballet and theatre to vodka and Russian culture, there is a lot to expect. Famous landmarks include Lake Baikal, The Red Square, The Hermitage and Moscow Metro System.

A record-breaking year is projected for Travel and Tourism.

Despite the plethora of daunting challenges faced by the hospitality industry over the past few years, the World Travel & Tourism Council is projecting a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism in 2024, with the sector’s global economic contribution set to reach an all-time high of $11.1 trillion. According to the global tourism body’s 2024 Economic Impact Research, Travel & Tourism will contribute an additional $770 billion over its previous record, thereby solidifying its stature as a global economic engine, generating one in every 10 dollars worldwide. As the global sector surpasses its pre-pandemic prosperity, 142 of 185 countries are expected to outperform previous national records.

An important sign of this economic prosperity has been the opening of new resorts and hotels throughout the world, along with major renovations. To follow are several examples.

The renovation includes refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites.

Newport Harbor Island Resort , Rhode Island

Newport Harbor Island Resort, the sole accommodations on Goat Island, is set to open at the end of April following a $50 million renovation. The renovation marks a new era for the former-Gurney’s property, comprised of refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites, contemporary Spa, re-concepted culinary experiences, meeting spaces and 22-slip marina. Much of the art in the rooms and throughout the hotel was commissioned from local artists, while soft goods were hand-crafted by various New England weavers’ guilds. Instead of focusing on the ubiquitous Gilded Era and sailing communities of Newport, the design team chose to focus on the inherent simplicity of coastal life. Guests and locals will be invited to cozy up in the property’s upgraded culinary outlets, including its full-service restaurant 1639, Torpedo Bar and Lounge, the lobby’s The Bakery and the beloved Pineapple Club.

The resort boasts 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms and suites.

TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo , Indonesia

Slated to debut spring 2024, TA’AKTANA is situated in the scenic town of Labuan Bajo among the enchanting landscapes of Flores island, which is home to one of the world’s highest populations of the endangered Komodo dragons. TA’AKTANA joins The Luxury Collection as Marriott Bonvoy’s first property in the region. The resort spans 16 hectares of pristine terrain and boasts 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms and suites, including overwater villas and family-friendly accommodations with 24-hour butler service. The resort’s Sea Villas offer overwater opulence that will immerse guests in the beauty of the resort’s local surroundings. TA’AKTANA is a destination itself, offering exceptional comfort and amenities. Guests can unwind in expansive pools offering breathtaking views of the Flores Sea, indulge in wellness with rejuvenating treatments or embark on a delectable gastronomic journey.

La Vista offers guests a modern, light and airy dining space.

La Vista at Cameron House , Scotland

Cameron House, the five-star resort on Loch Lomond, Scotland, opened La Vista, a brand new restaurant. La Vista will serve authentic Italian cuisine and boasts panoramic views of the loch. Formerly The Boat House, the acclaimed resort has invested $2 million in transforming the lochside restaurant into a modern, light and airy dining space with a 138-cover restaurant, informal Mercato with a dining area for 50 guests and a private dining room for up to 24 people. An al fresco terrace launching in the summer will provide an additional 120 covers. Open seven days a week, from breakfast to dinner, Head Chef, Mark Pawsey’s main menu celebrates authentic Italian cuisine and features dishes rooted in traditional recipes executed with modern flair. The menu is divided into small aperitivo plates and cicchetti, larger signature mains, handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas cooked in a Valoriani oven.

The world's first doggy jet service will cost you $6K for a one-way ticket

tourism companies worldwide

Dogs will soon be able to experience their own “ fur st” class flight with the launch of the world’s first jet charter company specifically designed for man’s best friend.

BARK, the dog toy company that coordinates the popular treat subscription BarkBox, is partnering with a jet charter service to take away the challenges of long-distance traveling with dogs, according to a press release. BARK Air, as the company calls it, offers the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”

Taking dogs on airplanes is, typically, a stressful endeavor with different airlines having different policies for pet travel. For example, American Airlines allows small dogs in a carrier to be placed under the seat in front, but larger dogs are put in the cargo space, which has been found to be stressful for the pet. For United Airlines , pets can fly in the cabin if there’s enough space, but they must fit in a carrier under the seat in front.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, in a statement.

However, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee for the dog-friendly flight. For now, a ticket for just one dog and one human will run you at least $6,000 one way.

The first BARK Air flights will take off on May 23, and so far, there are only two flight routes available, both from New York’s Westchester County Airport. From New York to London’s Stansted Airport, it’ll cost $8,000 one-way and to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport will cost $6,000 one-way. Tickets are available for purchase on April 11.

Not only does BARK Air allow dogs, it also focuses on the furry friends by treating them like VIPs, the press release said. BARK Air passengers can skip TSA checkpoints and screenings and instead experience a simple check-in process where they can meet the other dogs on the flight and the humans are served a meal cooked by on-site chefs.

When boarding, a BARK Air concierge is on-hand to ensure the dogs are socializing and adjusting to the environment well.

Each flight will undergo “Dogs Fly First” flight prep that includes “calming pheromones, music, and colors that pups prefer.” To make the flying experience easier and more enjoyable, dogs have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets.

During takeoff and descent, dogs are given a beverage of their choice to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization. Of course, there will be plenty of treats on the flight.

Dog Company Announces New Air Travel Experience Designed Specifically for Canines: They 'Will Be the VIPs'

Routes will currently serve the New York City metro area with flights to Los Angeles and London

tourism companies worldwide

Man's best friend will soon be able to get the VIP treatment when taking to the skies!

Earlier this week, BARK , a dog-focused company that provides products, services and content for canines, launched BARK Air , the "world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second," according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE.

Currently, routes will serve the New York City metro area through Westchester County Airport (HPN) with flights to the Los Angeles area via Van Nuys (VNY) and London, by Stansted Airport (STN).

According to the release, an Argus Platinum-rated charter company is "responsible for all aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance-related matters." BARK, meanwhile, the release said, is "focused on creating and delivering a world-class air travel experience for dogs and their people."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

After booking a trip online, users will be contacted by a BARK Air concierge, who will gather information about each dog and their human’s travel plans.

On the day of travel, pets and their human counterparts will arrive at the airport 45 to 60 minutes before takeoff, when the dogs will mingle with other canine companions as their owners dine on meals prepared by onsite chefs.

Next, dogs will be greeted by BARK Air concierge, who will "help them settle into their experience through socialization and dog-centric cabin preparation," per the release. They will also have access to various aids, the company added, including "calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs and calming jackets to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight."

Once onboard, BARK-branded treats, snacks and "surprises" will be offered to the dogs, and they will be "served their beverage of choice during ascent and descent to ensure they do not experience any ear discomfort commonly caused by changes in cabin pressure," BARK said.

“When we started BARK in 2011, we were on a mission to disrupt the dog space and create products designed for dogs and their humans. We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs — from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK.

“We believe this initiative will elevate awareness of our brand’s mission and values, introduce more dog lovers to the BARK family, and help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world," he added.

In a statement of his own, Zahir Ibrahim, Chief Financial Officer at BARK, echoed those sentiments, stating, “We believe this initiative will raise awareness of BARK’s mission in a cost-effective manner. Given we are not committed to booking flights far in advance, we have a lot of flexibility to opportunistically charter flights during times of high demand."

"In parallel, we believe the additional traffic to BARK.co will raise awareness of our full offering, benefiting our core business in the long term," he continued.
