The Penitent Magdalen
Georges de La Tour French
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 622
With its extreme contrasts of candlelight and shadow, pared-down geometry, and meditative mood, this painting exemplifies La Tour’s painting at its most accomplished and characteristic. These visual qualities were a powerful countertrend to Baroque painting’s typical pomp and showiness. A native of the duchy of Lorraine in eastern present-day France, La Tour was indebted to Caravaggesque painting, but tended toward even more simplified forms. The quiet atmosphere of this painting perfectly fits the subject, Mary Magdalen, who renounced the pleasures of the flesh for a life of penance and contemplation. She is shown with a mirror, symbol of vanity; a skull, emblem of mortality; and a candle that probably references her spiritual enlightenment.

From East to West with London ( 14 days )
Overall the tour was great for seeing as much of Europe as you can in a short space of time. The days were long and full of adventure so if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday then this probably isn’t for you. The tour guides varied throughout the trip with Julio being a standout as a really great guide!! The other guides were also lovely but didn’t always have as much banter with the group

Europe Jewel - 14 Days
Great tour led by Shae our tour leader and Hans our driver. The tour is busy but we found it to be the best way to see abit of each location in case we will revisit another time. We look forward to taking another tour one day.

Desired Europe
Desire Europe tour was fairly good. I wanted to thank the guides that made it possible: Maria Jose and Tomas (both very well experienced), Israel (fresh new guy with a great attitude), Albert (nice and friendly), Antonio (even when he was a bit sick he did great work). We enjoyed the tour in general but there are a couple of sour things that I really hate about it: When I first tried to book a tour I had to change itineraries because those were not in our range of age? really not the case as we travelled with young couples, families with children which were all way below our age. When in Rome guide Mustafa did a very poor job as due to the snow weather, after the bus windshield tour he just decided to give us 30 min at the Vatican for pictures and then we should return to the hotel located at the outskirts of Rome (bad decision as weather already improved) I told him that all people in the bus came for a very long distance but he indicated he got instruction from his haed office to return (since he has to pretect the bus). I'm sorry but we did not buy into it and my wife and I decided to stay and returnred by 4pm ejoyiong a sunny afternoon... this was just a big dissapointment since customers are the reason for tour operators to exist... the following morning, we had to take taxi to the airport when a shuttle van was available for a family that took our same flight to Madrid... bad bad bad... left a sour taste on us so next time we might look for a better tour operator.
European Delight
Excellent tour that covered pretty much all the hotspots along the way. Nice and clean hotels with the exception of one. Coaches were clean and the drivers carried water bottles in the fridge... you can get one for a Euro if needed. Europamundo's own coaches have vending machines in the bus and you can fetch water, coke, and other drinks. Most of the coaches did not have usb charging points which is a big negative as we spent lot of time on the road and phone needed charging. Tour guides were awesome, knowledgeable, and accommodative. Having exclusive local guides at some places was great as we got direct knowledge and in-depth history of the place during the visits. Overall it was a great experience on a 17 days tour from Rome to Paris.
A Touch of Europe (11 destinations)
I wasn't sure what to expect but I quickly realized that this was going to be a great experience. My first guide was Mustafa Kiwan and he was incredible. Very organized, extremely personable, funny, patient, knowledgeable...simply the best. All other guides were very good as well however some of the local guides were just a bit too enthusiastic with so much precise information and minute details about what we were seeing. The itinerary was well planned and we saw as much as you could expect to see in each city given the one or two days allotted to each location. The hotels were simple but decent with one disaster but given the overall price of the trip, totally fine. Most breakfasts were good and a few were over the top fantastic. The buses were for the most part fairly new, a couple of older ones but still comfortable. All had wifi which was great. Some days were very long but when you have to cover a lot of ground its to be expected. Overall this trip was an excellent experience and highly recommended for those who like to see and learn a lot and are fine with 12-14 hour days at times.

Madrid to Rome
Had a great time from Madrid to Italy! Very organized. The drivers, Augusto and Vicente’s kept us safe on the road. The tour guides, shout out to Miguel and Gabi, were knowledgeable and funny at the same time! The hotels were not bad, most were comfortable. There were some places where we wished we could have stayed longer but understandable as we signed up for a lot of places to see. This won’t be the last. Thank you for the memories!
Balkan Kaleidoscope
My wife and I enjoyed the Balkan overview w Penguin Travel. The tour is geared towards independent travelers with good mobility. Most of our fellow travelers were experienced and took advantage of the free time offered. The hotels were 3 star on average and despite some minor issues were clean and comfortable. We are glad we did not drive since the roads traveled were hilly and the speed limits as low as 18mph made the bus drive slowly and there were 16 border crossings. Enjoyed meeting fellow passionate travelers. Overall a good price given what was involved.
Magnificent Four
The trip lived up to expectations. One is never certain with these things. After an exhausting (and tense, because we didn't understand the languages) train trip to Berlin (not part of the tour) we were welcomed and tranferred to the hotel by a friendly lady. After little contact from Europamundo on day 1 it started in earnest on day 2. Informative local guides who did their best to impart much knowledge in a short time - it was hard to put into perspective but the free time afterwards rounded at least some of it out. We were fortunate having small groups from diverse countries some of whom we will remain in contact with. While we believed it would be the same group for the whole tour, many people were travelling different routes. Companion guides were good handling these complex groups. Drivers were excellent both on the highways and crazy busy cities like Paris. Well done Europamundo! We now understand that you travel much further an wider than we originally thought.
Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days
We had a fabulous trip with ChooseBalkans and would highly recommend them for your next trip to the region. And, we highly recommend you visit Albania: lots of fresh and delicious food, beautiful places to visit, and ancient and contemporary history to learn about. Sirma has been responsive and proactively communicative the entire time we worked with them. They put together a wonderful, affordable, and personalized tour for us on quite short notice (because of our schedule) and found us a top-notch tour guide, Gerion. They combined several of their pre-packaged tours based on our requests, and organized a 10-day trip from Tirana to Athens that included 6 UNESCO sites, three countries, three opportunities to hike, time to explore towns and cities, recommendations of where to eat (we are vegetarians, and yes, there was plenty for us to eat in the Balkans!), and more. ChooseBalkans and Gerion arranged the travel, tour, and hotel logistics and regularly asked if there was anything else we needed. The name of the company is our final comment - Choose Balkans!

Tour from Athens to Belgrade: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days
Wonderful tour of Balkans! Montenegro, Bosnia, Kosovo, and Albania were new to us. Each day was well planned with interesting sites to explore: old historic centers/ museums/ castles/ churches/ mosques/ markets. Hotels were well located and offered delicious breakfasts. Fabio our guide and driver was excellent and taught us the history of all the sights that we visited. We will recommend this tour to family and friends.
Europe Highlights - 10 Days
Pre-trip support was awful. Up until the bus arrived we thought we were being scammed. The trip itself was great, but too much time on the bus. Tim was a super guy. The best! Wonderful personality and very helpful. (He could have provided more commentary along the way.) James was a kind man and skilled driver. We liked him a lot.
The Best of Eastern Europe
Excellent trip covering many capitals and other cities in Central and Eastern Europe. There is a lot of free time included in the itinerary to explore on your own, so be prepared to make your own daily plans and venture out on your own or with fellow travelers. Almost every city has free (tips only) quality guides. Accommodations are all in centrally-located medium-level hotels. Some are better than others. As is common in Europe, around half of the hotels did not have air conditioning, only fans. Availability and quality of hotels differs by regions, and I found these hotels to be better than in tours run by G Adventures in other regions of the world. They are lower in quality to hotels in US and Canada. Don't expect a Ritz Carleton, and you won't be disappointed. Breakfasts are included, and they were fantastic everywhere - all-you-can-eat, with large assortment and excellent quality. All other meals are on your own, although the guide made arrangements to eat as a group on many nights (which is optional). Food is still relatively inexpensive in former Soviet bloc countries, not so in Berlin and Vienna. Transportation was excellent, and varied from private buses, minivans and taxis to public trains, metro, buses and trams. Be prepared to carry/roll your luggage for close to 1 km (about half a mile). In a few cities, larger buses and minivans are not allowed into historic centers of town, where hotels are located, during the day, so we had to walk. One of most memorable experiences for many travelers on our tour was a visit to Auschwitz concentration camp, which was included in the itinerary.
- Active Adventure
European Whirl (Summer, End London, 13 Days)
Kyle (our tour director) was great. He went over and above to make our European Whirl trip wonderful. We had a disabled person on the tour and I was very impressed with the care and compassion shown so that gentlemen had a wonderful experience. Overy the 12 days we only had one bad experience and that was when we arrived back in London on the Eurostar the Trafalgar Representative (not Kyle as we left him in Paris) greeted us however we had to wait over one hour for our transfer to arrive to take us to the hotel.

Reviews of Fully Guided Tours in Europe
This was a fast-paced tour with a lot of places to visit. The itinerary given to us was good and that was followed throughout the trip but except for minor changes in some places. Hotels were good except for the one in Rouen. We had all together 7 guides in this tour. Eric from Vienna to Prague was good and straightforward. Rioni was sweet and gave us detailed information. Tere was very organized and created a WhatsApp group to provide all information to travelers. This was extremely helpful. I recommend all Guides to create WhatsApp group. Sometime the Guide is not as good, which becomes a little bit of hassle. I understand it’s a difficult job to be one, but if you do not like the job you should quit. When the English-speaking people are in minority and the English speaking and Spanish speaking groups are combined information is mostly given in Spanish. Overall, you get the bang for the bucks. Highly recommended for first time travelers to Europe.
Having Gustavo Gomes as a Team Leader and combination with Sebastiano as a Coach driver really made a difference in having a memorable experience our first trip in Europe.
We had seen the places that was in the itinerary. The tour guides were good at what they do. Overall, we had a wonderful trip. Thank you tour radar and europamundo. I hope to schedule another family trip in the future.

Georges de La Tour L'Europa della luce
The exhibition is accessible only through reservation, before booking please consult the access rules
The first exhibition in Italy ever dedicated to Georges de La Tour, through prestigious comparisons among the French Master's masterpieces and those of his contemporaries (Gerrit van Honthorst, Paulus Bor, Trophime Bigot, Frans Hals and others), aims at bringing a new point of view on the genre painting and on the luministic experimentations, dealing with the profound questions that still surround the work of this mysterious artist.
La Tour makes angels out of ordinary people, and saints without a halo or iconographic attributes. He prefers his subjects to be from the streets, beggars included. He generally painted people of low rank rather than historical models or high-ranking characters. The few paintings acknowledged as being autographs are mostly small or medium format, intimate images with no landscape background, nocturnes and, especially in what is considered his later artistic years, almost monochromatic works with a geometric layout, simple but very modern for the time.
For the first time, Milan’s Palazzo Reale is hosting Georges de La Tour, his world and his works. La Tour’s extraordinary images, decisive gestures and inner contemplation are captivating and exciting after a period when he fell into disregard owing to the highly unique nature of his work.
The project was particularly complex for a number of reasons: the large number of lenders (28 from three continents), involving some of the world’s largest international institutions such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Frick Collection in New York, the San Francisco Fine Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, and the National Art Gallery in Lviv, along with the widespread participation of French regional museum institutions such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, the Musée du Mont-du Piété in Bergues, the Musée départemental d’Art ancien et contemporain in Epinal, the Museée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, the Musée départemental Georges de La Tour in Vic-sur-Seille, and major Italian museums like the Uffizi Gallery, the Pinacoteca Vaticana, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica-Palazzo Barberini.

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.
Destination Must-Sees
The capital and largest city of Andalusian Spain is Seville. Approximately 2,200 years old, the early origins of the city date back to the year 712. It is situated along the Guadalquivir River, which splits the city into two halves. Seville is famous for being the birthplace of the Flamenco dance. It is also known for its culture, monuments, traditions and artistic heritage.
The Costa del Sol:
This “Sunny Coast” is the southernmost part of Spain, stretching along the Mediterranean Sea. Its major province is Málaga, the home of Picasso. To the far west part of the Costa del Sol is the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. The sunny provinces of the Costa del Sol are known for their golden sandy beaches, fresh Mediterranean seafood and relaxing atmosphere.
Irish countryside:
Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.
Ancient cities of Italy:
Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.
Destination Must-Dos
La Sagrada Familia:
Meaning the Holy Family, this modern structure is known as the church of the people, built by the people, with the money of the people. While it is not the cathedral of Barcelona, it is widely known due to its unique architecture and phenomenal design initiated by architect Antoni Gaudí. Work on the exploratory church began in 1882 and continues to this day, but with modern technology and the rising number of visitors and donations, the church’s completion date has rapidly become closer. The facades of the church are breathtaking in their intricate and artistic details, all of which were inspired by Gaudí.
The Palace of Versailles
The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.
Drift down a canal:
While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.
This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. Enjoy afternoon tea in London
Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.
Explore ancient Athens
You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.
Catch a flamenco show in Spain
Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.
View the Northern Lights in Iceland
Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.
Spend a night at the opera in Vienna
Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).
Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain
There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.
Paris, France
The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.
London, England
The British Museum
With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.
Florence, Italy
Uffizi Gallery
The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.
Best museums in Europe & Britain
When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.
Paella Valenciana
Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.
Beef Stroganoff
Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.
Bouillabaisse
The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.
Best food in Europe & Britain
Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.
What to pack for Europe
With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.
A good book
Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.
Versatile shoes
Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.
A blank journal
With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.
All climate clothing
No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

Bold & Beautiful: La Rioja & the Basque Country 4 day tour
La Rioja and the Basque Country are like the intriguing stranger at a party, the one you’re dying to know. On this tour, you’ll discover everything that makes them unique.
Tour Highlights
La Rioja - The famously delicious wines here perfectly complement the views of the Cantabrian Mountains
San Sebastián - The top beach town in the Basque region is known as both a surfer's paradise and a foodie heaven
Burgos - Walk in the shadow of the soaring Gothic cathedral and admire this majestic city, once the capital of the old kingdom of Castille
Basque Country - Explore this unique and lesser-known region with one of the oldest cultures (and languages) in Europe
Haro - Get to know the wine capital of La Rioja a bit better as your overnight destination on this tour
Your journey
Ever wanted to go somewhere a little less explored? The kind of place people ask “Where exactly is that?”… and you feel bad for them, because they’ve not experienced the same beauty and adventure as you have. But that’s for them to discover in their own time.
Instead, you sit there telling them about the incredible Moorish architecture and the way its beautifully intricate designs looked like poetry. You show them pictures of Celtiberian ruins, knowing that they won’t truly understand because pictures never do it justice. You try describing the smell of the seafood that was brought to your table in the wine capital of Haro, and suddenly both your stomach and your heart are longing to go back to Spain .
That’s La Rioja and the Basque Country.
Tour Details
- Pack comfortable shoes for walks up to beautiful views
- Transport in a luxury mini-coach with a local driver
- Air conditioning as standard
- The stories and services of an English-speaking guide
- 3 nights in 3-4 star hotels with continental breakfast
- Rioja wine tasting and tour (not lunch)
- Admission to Royal Palace of La Granja of San Ildefonso (and gardens) with audioguide
- Meals, unless listed above
- Attractions, unless specified above
- The Celtiberian fortress town of Buitrago del Lozoya really does have it all
- Feel like an archaeologist among the ruins of Montejo de Tiermes
- Figure out the best wine to pair with your meal in Haro, the wine capital of the La Rioja region
It’s farewell to the thriving city of Madrid for now but worry not – you’ll have plenty to fall in love with on this tour. And what better way to start your romance with Spain than with a bit of Moorish architecture? A 15th-century castle. A museum dedicated to Picasso. We’re talking about the historical Celtiberian fortress town of Buitrago del Lozoya. Try saying that five times fast.
You’ll have a couple of hours here to feel like a true explorer and even grab a bite to eat before we depart and continue north towards the ruins of Montejo de Tiermes. This ancient Celtiberian town was cut from the very rocks around them, the ruins of which still stand today, including a Roman aqueduct.
The day ends in the wine capital of La Rioja region: Haro. Wine bars, bodegas, vineyards, and glorious architecture. Wrapped up in the atmosphere of this wondrous town, you’ll consider yourself lucky to be spending the night here.
Accommodation
Eurostars Los Agustinos or similar, Haro
- Historical and religious, be enamoured by the village of Santo Domingo de la Calzada
- Enjoy a guided tour and wine tasting at Winery Lecea
- Step off the beaten track into the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra
Make sure you have a big breakfast this morning because, as we leave Haro behind, it’s time to explore the wine region around you. We’ll pop in at the quaint old village of Santo Domingo de la Calzada this morning. Known for its historical and religious importance, it’s a famous stop on the pilgrimage route to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela.
And what holiday is complete without a little winery visit? We stop in at Winery Lecea for a guided tour and wine tasting which is included in your tour package. This family of winegrowers have been dedicated to producing their wine for more than four generations, and it's time they shared a little piece of La Rioja with you.
We then stop somewhere a little off the beaten track. That’s our thing, after all! San Vicente de la Sonsierra may not be as well-known as some larger Spanish cities, but lying in the heart of La Rioja, with a historic castle overlooking the Ebro River, a 12th-century church, and traditional Spanish charm, we’ll show you why this little village is worth your attention. You have free time here to explore and even grab a bite to eat.
We return to Haro in the late afternoon to give you a bit more time to explore this wonderful city before you settle in for the night.
Included Activities
Accommodation
- Discover the little-known world of Basque Country
- Devour the foodie heaven of San Sebastián
- Relax as you wander the famous town of Pamplona
Today is all about the Basque Country. Not familiar with this region? You will be after today. Located near the border between Spain and France, at the western end of the Pyrenees Mountain Range, Basque is one of the oldest cultures in Europe with their unique language called Euskera. Among other things. Now’s the time to find out all about this rich culture.
Everyone, meet San Sebastián, a foodie heaven with the highest number of Michelin stars per capita. You have time here to grab lunch and check out the beautiful blonde beach.
You travel back inland to Pamplona. This town is famous for San Fermin, ‘the Running of the Bulls’. Fortunately, you aren’t going to have to run anywhere. Instead, you can stroll around the town’s splendid fortress walls and relax.
Then it’s back to Haro for your final night, so make sure to take full advantage.
- Be welcomed to Burgos, once the capital of the old kingdom of Castille
- 'Wine-not' enjoy a glass or two in the city of Aranda de Duero
- Explore Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, Spain’s ‘mini-Versailles’
We know endings can be sad, but we assure you this one won’t be. Your first stop of the day gives you a chance to walk in the shadow of a soaring Gothic cathedral on your way to sample some of the region’s favourite dishes for lunch. We’re talking about the town of Burgos, once the capital of the old kingdom of Castille. It still seems royal to us.
Now how about a bit of paradise and a glass of wine? That’s what the city of Aranda de Duero is for. While we’re only here for about an hour, you’ll love this town that’s famous for its interconnecting wine cellars that run under the town.
Next, you head further south to the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. Your included ticket to this stunning structure lets you wander through the rooms of Spain’s ‘mini-Versailles’ and wonder how much the gardening bill must be for its gorgeous grounds.
As the day ends, you arrive in the country’s capital, Madrid. But the adventure doesn’t have to stop there.
Where does this tour stay overnight?
You stay three nights in Haro. For examples of the accommodation, please see the tour itinerary.
How does the accommodation work?
A good night’s sleep is often needed for a good day of travel.
So we’ve hand-picked three-star to four-star hotels in remote coastal villages, bustling towns, and mountain valleys.
Your accommodation is included in the tour price; and when you book your trip, you can choose whether you want a double room, a twin room, or a single room.
Are there any extra accommodation costs?
The price you see is for all your tour accommodation and for the tour itself. It also includes a tourist tax. This figure is based on shared accommodation. When you're booking your tour and select a single room, an additional single room supplement will be added to the price.
Do I need a visa to take this tour?
You may need a Schengen Visa to travel throughout Europe. Check the official tourism website of the country you’re visiting for up-to-date and reliable information. Travel between countries is easy because there are no passport checks at the borders.
Are the tours suitable for people with mobility issues?
Most people can comfortably enjoy our tours, but it's worth bearing in mind that we often include optional short walks in scenic locations. Please also be aware that many of the old European towns are built on steep hills with cobbled lanes, and you may have to carry your own luggage at times.
So that we can ensure you're comfortable travelling with us, please let us know about any special requirements or needs at the time of booking. If you have any more questions, simply email [email protected] .
Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?
Europe's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure and avoid contributing to congestion issues, we start our trip from hotels located conveniently on the edge of cities. We choose hotels with good public transport connections to the city centre, so you can enjoy your evening explorations.
To make your tour more convenient, you can add an optional pre and post-departure accommodation in the hotel we use as a pick up or a drop off point.
When should I get to the departure point?
Arrive at the hotel lobby 15 minutes before your departure time. Unfortunately, we’re unable to wait for you if you’re late due to vehicle restrictions. But depending on your situation, we may be able to help you catch up with your tour.
What are your cancellation policies?
We have a cancellation period of 42 days for our Europe tours. If you cancel your trip before this period, we give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this time frame, you’re liable for the cost of the tour package.
We understand how disappointing it is when you have to cancel a trip with us, so please contact our friendly team who will try their best to resell your ticket and refund you.
Click here to view full terms and conditions.
What is a guaranteed departure?
It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.
Can routes change?
Your friendly driver and guide are passionate about the places they visit and know all the local gossip. This means your tour itinerary can change a little due to festivities, attraction opening hour changes, and spontaneous photo opportunities.
Can I pre-book a specific seat?
Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable mini-coaches offer a good view.
Are there toilets on the bus?
We like to keep our coaches small, nimble, and odour free. This means we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you frequently stop in local towns and villages for comfort breaks.
Do you take children on your tours?
We're unable to permit children under 16 years old on our Europe tours due to the nature of the activities that are included.
How much time do I get off the bus?
We want you to enjoy your trip to Europe. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of stops to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.
What are 'included activities' and 'optional activities'?
We've arranged experiences for you on your tour. The 'included activities' are already booked and paid for as part of your trip, whereas you can purchase 'optional activities' while on your tour. You also have free time in many destinations to pick and choose which attractions you visit.
Do we need to bring our own lunch?
You don't need to pack or bring along food on the mini-coach. We stop in small European towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.
What should I do if I have too much luggage?
It’s more enjoyable to travel with light luggage. You can take less by cleaning clothes along the way. Most hotels provide affordable laundry service.
But if you're travelling with more than 20kg, don't worry! There are left luggage facilities close to the majority of our departure points, and courier companies who could ship your excess luggage on to your chosen destination. Our team are happy to help if you need any suggestions or recommendations.
Should I tip the driver and the guide?
Let's be honest, our drivers and guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.
What about travel insurance?
We highly recommend you take out travel insurance, so you can enjoy a stress-free journey.
What is ABTOT?
You're protected by ABTOT when you book a tour with us. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we run into any issues. Read our terms and conditions for more information.
Our packages are covered by the Package Travel Regulations. For full details of your key rights please click here.

The Louvre, Paris
Centrally located on the Right Bank of the Seine River in the 1st arrondissement, The Louvre Museum is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the world; it is the single most frequently visited museum on earth, and for good reason. Its incredibly history and architecture house among the most famous of artworks from pre-history to the 19th century A.D. Its mind-boggling collection of 35,000 pieces includes such notable works as the sculpture, Venus de Milo, and paintings the likes of Davinci’s Mona Lisa, Vermeer’s The Lacemaker, and Rembrandt’s Bathsheba at Her Bath. Famous paintings are not the only reason to visit The Louvre. Tens of thousands of works by equally and lesser know artists are on display, and this encapsulates a microcosmic history of the western civilization, on a visual level. The building itself is a historic former palace and fortress that was erected in the late 1100s; the remnants of the fortress walls can still be seen in the basement level. And it was the royal family’s residence until, during the French Revolution in 1792; Louis XVI was imprisoned at that time and the treasures of The Louvre were declared national property. The museum officially opened a year later, August 1793. The Louvre houses 8 main departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Art; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; and Pints and Drawings. In 1989 the somewhat controversial renovations, high-impact, ultra-modern glass pyramids, designed by architect I. M. Pei, opened to the public and since then attendance has doubled. The Louvre is a must-see on any trip to Paris.

Travis Kelce has left the building. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is returning to the U.S. after supporting his girlfriend Taylor Swift on the first night of her Eras Tour stint in Sydney, Australia.
Travis Kelce Says He’d Marry Katy Perry, Kiss Taylor Swift in Resurfaced Clip
On Saturday (Feb. 24), Kelce flew on a private jet to Las Vegas to meet up with his Chiefs teammates — including quarterback Patrick Mahomes — to party in celebration of their Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11, according to TMZ .
Trending on Billboard
Toward the end of her concert, Kelce got a special shout-out from the 14-time Grammy winner. While singing “Karma,” Swift once again changed a lyric to say, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs,” something she first did when the athlete attended her Buenos Aires show in November.
After the concert wrapped, Kelce waited in the wings for Swift to emerge from backstage, after which she wrapped him in a hug and the couple kissed as lingering fans cheered.
The New Heights podcaster has been with the “Cruel Summer” singer in Australia since Wednesday, when his plane touched down in the land down under. On Thursday, the couple visited the Sydney Zoo , where they were spotted holding hands and taking selfies.
Cameras spotted Kelce getting off a private jet the day before, marking the second time the three-time he has hopped on a plane to go see Swift on her globe-hopping Eras Tour. Swift is playing four dates at Sydney’s Accor Stadium through Monday (Feb. 26), with Sabrina Carpenter as the opener.

Georges de La Tour by Dalia Judovitz LAST MODIFIED: 24 September 2020 DOI: 10.1093/obo/9780195399301-0454
Georges de La Tour’s (b. 1593–d. 1652) artistic contributions were largely ignored by posterity until his “rediscovery” in 1915 by the art historian Hermann Voss. The patronage of such luminaries as the Duke of Lorraine, King Louis XIII , and Cardinal Richelieu, and the plethora of early copies, attest to his success during his lifetime. His eventual lapse into obscurity lasting almost three centuries led to the reattribution of his works to Italian, Netherlandish, Spanish, or French Baroque painters. While more than seventy oil paintings have been attributed to La Tour, fewer than forty are accepted as originals. The existence of his paintings in two or more versions, some as autograph replicas or as copies, along with questions about his son Étienne de La Tour’s possible pictorial contributions, left the attribution and chronology of his works mired in conjecture and controversy. Born the second son of a baker of some means at Vic-sur-Seille, he married a widow of minor nobility in 1617. Resettling to Luneville in the Duchy of Lorraine, he gained recognition as a painter in a region devastated by the ravages of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). A casualty of an epidemic, La Tour died a few days after his wife at the height of his artistic career. The scarcity of documentary sources about his life is compounded by the total absence of evidence concerning his artistic training, professional travels, and artistic influences. La Tour’s pursuit of likeness between image and the natural world is believed to bear the influence of Caravaggio or his followers, reflecting post-Tridentine calls for the revitalization of religious imagery. La Tour’s paintings have been traditionally divided into daylight and night-time works, despite notable exceptions. Depictions of daylight serve to bring into moralizing relief foibles of secular life shown in realist genre scenes of brawling, cheating, and fortune-telling. Biblically inspired, his mysterious nocturnal or tenebrist works glow with a poetic luminosity imbued with spiritual connotations. Suspended in the stillness of religious contemplation, his candlelight paintings bear witness to the presence of inner life, depicting modes of consciousness that painting may only suggest but cannot ultimately show. Celebrated for their aura of mystery, his paintings continue to invite scholarly interest and public fascination.
Scholarly monographs and exhibition catalogues have played an influential role in La Tour’s presentation to scholars and the broader public. The monographs selected for the most part include presentations of the painter’s life accompanied by interpretive analyses of his works. Full, authoritative art-historical accounts in French can be found in large-format monographs, notably the groundbreaking study Pariset 1948 , the summary of his life and works in Rosenberg and Macé de L’Épinay 1973 , the magisterial volume Thuillier 2002 , and most recently, the comprehensive account Fohr 2018 , which updates the scholarship and pictorial references. An indispensable biographical account is in Reinbold 1991 . A readable overview of his life and works in small format can be found in Choné 1996 , also in French. There are some excellent studies available in English, namely Furness 1949 , an inaugural volume that outlines key issues in a pictorial corpus still under construction. An authoritative introduction and discussion of his works can be found in Nicolson and Wright 1974 , in English. A thematic analysis of depicted figures and their Baroque stylistic implications is presented in Le Floch 1995 , in French. A detailed analysis of La Tour’s treatment of light, critique of sight, and pictorial strategies can be found in Judovitz 2018 , in English.
Choné, Paulette. Georges de La Tour: Un peintre lorrain au XVIIe siècle . Tournai, Belgium: Casterman, 1996.
Presenting a useful overview of the painter’s life and works based on solid scholarly research, this volume places special emphasis on La Tour’s regional sources and development as a painter in Lorraine.
Fohr, Robert. Georges de La Tour: Le maître des nuits . Paris: Cohen & Cohen, 2018.
This richly illustrated and carefully researched large-format monograph combines a well-documented narrative of La Tour’s life with revealing insights on his works. An impressive array and display of comparative paintings enhances the scope of the analysis. It is a revised, augmented, and updated re-edition of Georges de La Tour: Le maître des nuits (Paris: Adam Biro, 1997). In French.
Furness, M. S. S. Georges de La Tour of Lorraine 1593–1652 . London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1949.
Overlooked, but still-relevant inaugural monograph published in English on La Tour is grounded in extensive research built on the findings of Pariset 1948 . Summing up the essentials about the painter’s life, it provides insightful discussions on the pictorial style and content of his works.
Judovitz, Dalia. Georges de La Tour and the Enigma of the Visible . New York: Fordham University Press, 2018.
A comprehensive study of La Tour’s treatment of light and pictorial strategies follows a brief introduction to his life and works. Complementing an analysis of the illusionism and deceptive character of the Baroque visual image, this study breaks new ground by exploring instances of pictorial self-awareness.
Le Floch, Jean-Claude. Le signe de contradiction: Essai sur Georges de La Tour et son œuvre . Rennes, France: Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 1995.
Focused primarily on La Tour’s paintings, this volume approaches with insight and finesse La Tour’s style and choice of subject matter in terms of Baroque aesthetics, revealing patterns of ambiguity and contradiction that pervade his works.
Nicolson, Benedict, and Cristopher Wright. Georges de La Tour . New York: Phaidon, 1974.
By-now-classic monograph in large format introduced La Tour’s life and works to Anglo-American audiences. It brings together biographical and pictorial concerns, attempts to construct a chronology of his works, and provides a catalogue of his works.
Pariset, François-Georges. Georges de La Tour . Paris: Henri Laurens, 1948.
This foundational scholarly work provides an extensive account of La Tour’s life, painterly influences, and historical context along with pictorial interpretations built around key themes which help organize his works. It continues to be an important scholarly resource.
Reinbold, Anne. Georges de La Tour . Paris: Fayard, 1991.
An influential biography based on extensive archival research outlines with historical precision and insight the state of knowledge about the painter’s life, social connections, and cultural milieu in Lorraine.
Rosenberg, Pierre, and François Macé de L’Épinay. Georges de La Tour: Vie et œuvre . Fribourg, Switzerland: Office du Livre, 1973.
A presentation of the artist’s life and accompanying catalogue provides an overview of his pictorial corpus. Discussions regarding the dating, provenance, and prior exhibition of these works delineate the state of research at the time.
Thuillier, Jacques. Georges de La Tour . Translated by Fabia Claris. Paris: Flammarion, 2002.
This magisterial, large-format monograph on La Tour in English surveys the painter’s life and works. Insightful analyses are accompanied by extensive illustrations and enlargements of pictorial details. This is an updated translation and re-edition of a volume originally published in French in 1992 that reprised his earlier catalogue of La Tour’s works, Tout l’oeuvre peint de Georges de La Tour (Paris: Flammarion, 1973).
