If you’re traveling as a family, it can be tricky to find travel trailers with enough sleeping accommodations for everyone.

Although many travel trailers have sofa beds and convertible dinettes, these sleeping areas may only accommodate two or three people. You also have to convert your living space every night when it’s time for bed.

An excellent solution is travel trailers with a dedicated bunkhouse at the rear of the vehicle.

Some trailers have four bunks, so that you don’t need to bother transforming your living area each night.

A quad bunk travel trailer provides more privacy and comfort, since the bunkhouse is essentially a second bedroom.

Many of these trailer layouts also include additional outdoor kitchens for prepping large meals, higher capacity water tanks to support more people, and additional features or systems for accommodating families.

To help you in your search for the best travel trailer with quad bunks, I’ve done some research to show you the best travel trailer models with the most agreeable quad bunkhouse floorplans for traveling with large families.

5 Family Travel Trailers with Quad Bunkhouse Layouts

Quad Bunkhouse

The old stereotype of retired couples driving around the country in tiny RVs has shifted dramatically in recent years. Instagram feeds are now clogged with stylish millennials flaunting exotic locales and life on the road in shiny, modern-looking vans and trailers.

But where is the in-between on-road adventure for families traveling with children? If you’re past the newlywed stage but not quite ready to retire, a quad bunkhouse could be the answer to your travel dreams.

Even if you are a young couple, a retired couple, or simply someone who travels with friends and needs more sleeping space in your RV, there are a variety of options to increase your floor plan without having to spend the money on a Class A motorhome monster.

If you’re unfamiliar with the quad bunkhouse style, this is an excellent way to maximize your sleeping and recreation space. Bunkhouses are tiered sleeping areas, such as bunk beds, that allow you to use the vertical space in your RV without taking up too much floor space. A quad bunkhouse will have four bunks and, in most cases, a master sleeping area with a larger bed designed for two people.

We’ve found five travel trailers with quad bunkhouse layouts that help maximize sleeping space inside, so you, your family, and your friends can enjoy being on the road together while also being comfortable when it’s time for lights out.

Table of Contents

1. Highland Ridge Open Range Roamer 310BHS

Highland Ridge’s Open Range Roamer 310BHS is an excellent choice for families. With their ACCU-SLIDE slide system, this model’s four slideouts make it extra roomy and easy to set up and take down.

This feature provides support at four points on the inside and four points on the outside to ensure the slide extends and retracts smoothly and securely.

Inside, you’ll find hardwood cabinet doors, LED ceiling lights, and no carpets in the living and kitchen areas, making cleanup a breeze and the space suitable for both children and pets.

The kitchen comes standard with an 8-cubic-foot refrigerator, which can be upgraded to an 18-cubic-foot refrigerator. The kitchen is simple to use thanks to solid surface countertops, plenty of outlets in the prep area, and a center island.

The outdoor cooking area includes a sink, mini-fridge, prep area, and three-burner pull-out cooktop, as well as space to mount a 32-inch TV, which is ideal for game days.

The primary seating area is on the main slide, which has either a dinette and plush seating or a large u-lounger with two removable tables. The center section of the lounger also serves as a queen-sized hide-a-bed, bringing the interior’s total sleeping capacity to nine.

The rear bunkhouse room has a booth-style dinette area that converts to a bed with a top bunk on one side and two bunks on the opposite side, as well as additional storage drawers under the lower bunk, which doubles as a couch during the day.

The bunkroom and master bedroom are both accessible through French doors, lending this travel trailer a more residential feel while also reducing noise levels.

The master suite includes a wardrobe slide with built-in drawers and additional hanging storage space. The queen-sized bed has extra storage above, LED lighting, end tables, and interior access to the bathroom.

This travel trailer has 367 square feet of space and an exterior length of slightly more than 37 feet. It spans 165 inches with the slides fully extended and has a road width of 100 inches, making it a wide load.

Customers appreciate the large master bedroom closet and the second a/c unit with digital thermostat. They also like the shelving on the bunkroom’s back wall and the thoughtfully netted shelves that keep everything in its place.

2. Jayco Jay Flight 32TSBH

quad bunkhouse travel trailer 2022

Jayco’s Jay Flight 32TSBH travel trailer is another model we like. This model is ideal for families because it has plenty of space to relax and sleep.

This is their triple slide bunkhouse travel trailer, which has two slides for the bunkhouse at the back of the trailer and a larger slide for the living area in the main body of the trailer.

The front bedroom of the trailer has an 80-inch Simmons mattress and wardrobes on both sides. The entertainment center separates the bedroom from the living area. The living area’s slide houses a sofa with an optional hide-a-bed and a horseshoe dinette.

The pantry is next to the dinette, and the kitchen has a double sink, a cooktop with hood, an 8-cubic-foot refrigerator, overhead cabinets, and pull-out drawers. This model also includes an outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, pull-out two-burner cooktop, and extra cabinet space.

The bunkhouse at the trailer’s back is roomy, thanks to the two slideouts that house the sleeping areas. Jayco’s signature J-cube sofa serves as a lower bunk with the top bunk overhead on one side.

The opposite slide also has two bunks, and the back wall has a built-in entertainment unit with cabinets, a flip-up table, and a TV mount.

The bathroom is located between the kitchen and the bunkhouse, making it easy for the kids to use in the middle of the night. The bathroom features an amazing skylight and a porcelain foot-flush toilet, and while the bathroom has a shower, this model also has an outdoor shower.

This Jayco travel trailer has an exterior length of two inches more than 36 feet and a road width of 96 inches. The addition of a second tank increases the freshwater capacity from 40 to 80 gallons, and the pass-through storage feature makes this model suitable for even large families.

Customers appreciate Jayco’s standard two-year warranty, and dealerships report that this model has a high level of customer satisfaction.

This floor plan is extremely popular because parents appreciate the fact that their children have their own room, and placing the bunkhouse in the back means that the living and dining areas do not have to be reconfigured when everyone is ready for bed.

3. Keystone Passport 292BH SL Series

The Keystone Passport 292BH SL series travel trailer, which sleeps eight comfortably and is similar in layout to the Jayco Jay Flight, is another great option for families on the road. This model’s aluminum framing keeps it lighter in weight than other models with comparable features, making it easy to tow.

The bunker hatch is a fantastic feature of the bunkhouse. A deadbolting cargo door on the outside opens to reveal gas struts that assist in easily lifting the bunk to reveal cargo space complete with easy-touch lighting and plenty of storage space.

The bunkhouse has four bunks as well as a wardrobe with a TV shelf. Another cool feature is that three of the bunks have their own set of USB plugs, reducing the need to share outlets.

This travel trailer’s single slide extends to accommodate the leather tri-fold sofa sleeper and u-shaped dinette. The large windows in this area let in plenty of natural light, and the lighting above these areas is controlled by a touch-sensitive switch on the slide wall, which also controls the dimmer lighting.

There are also numerous outlets and USB connections in the living area, as well as cabinets under the dinette seating for additional storage. The adjacent pantry has a hanging rack and adjustable shelving, allowing you to tailor the storage to your family’s needs.

The kitchen is outfitted with hardwood cabinetry, overhead storage, and pull-out drawers. The wastebasket can be stored in the cabinet beneath the stainless steel farmhouse-style sink, and the storage in the L-shaped peninsula countertop is easily accessible.

A tempered glass stove top with three burners, a range hood, and a 6 cubic foot double-door refrigerator round out the kitchen.

The residential queen-sized bed in the master bedroom has USB charging ports on both sides. The shiplap front wall gives the sleeping area a headboard feel, and there are hanging wardrobes on either side of the bed, nighttime reading lights, and under-bed storage.

This Keystone Passport model is a manageable 32 feet, 4 inches long, which means it will be easy to find a campsite for, as campsites become more limited once your trailer exceeds 35 feet in length.

Customers appreciate how stable this model is to tow and how spacious the interior is, even when the slide is closed in travel mode. They also enjoy using the 15-foot electric awning and the outside kitchen when the weather is nice.

4. Crossroads Sunset Trail SS289QB

Crossroads’ Sunset Trail Super Lite models are another good option if you need a lot of sleeping space but prefer a lighter weight travel trailer.

Crossroads Super Lite models feature 6-sided aluminum construction, solid surface countertops, LED interior lights, an Extreme Weather package, and a fiberglass front cap.

The barreled ceiling, which gives the interior a more spacious and homey feel, is one appealing feature of this model.

The Sunset Trail sleeps up to ten people and has a king-sized bed in the master bedroom as well as dual wardrobes. The living area’s slide houses a 64-inch sleeper sofa and a 42-inch dinette that can be upgraded to a free-standing table and chairs.

A glass top, flush mount range cover, stainless steel microwave, ceramic backsplash, and either a 6 or 7 cubic foot refrigerator with a magnetized door are included in the kitchen. The bathroom features a 36-inch shower with glass enclosure and skylight.

The rear bunkhouse features a dinette that converts to sleeping space and an upper bunk on a sturdy hinge that can be quickly moved up for more headroom in the dinette area if needed.

Two more bunks complete this space, which also includes a wardrobe with TV hookups just above to easily convert it into an entertainment center.

A mini-fridge and a pull-out cooking area with a sink and two-burner cooktop are included in the exterior camp kitchen.

A 16-foot retractable power awning provides shade, and the exterior is ready for satellite installation with an easy-access pass-through storage area.

The Crossroads Sunset Trail SS289QB is 32 feet, 9 inches long and weighs only 5661 pounds, so it doesn’t require the most powerful tow vehicle.

Customers appreciate how well-made and light this model is in comparison to models with similar floor plans. They also like the outdoor kitchen and the interior layout, which is ideal for families and keeps everyone comfortable.

5. Prime Time Tracer Breeze 31BHD

The Prime Time Tracer Breeze 31 BHD with dual slides is the third option for a lighter weight bunkhouse-style travel trailer. Even though it is slightly heavier than the other models we’ve discussed, at 6300 lbs, it can still be towed by a vehicle with a half-ton towing capacity.

This trailer has a retractable lit awning that runs almost the entire length of it. In addition to the standard cooktop, it has an outside kitchen with a mini-fridge, sink, and stainless steel grill. The interior kitchen features a two-door refrigerator, three-burner cooktop, and lighted range hood.

A large sink with a high-rise faucet is accommodated by the seamless L-shaped kitchen counter. The kitchen countertop matches the dinette table, which is a nice touch. The kitchen cabinets are made of solid wood and have a cherry finish, as well as sturdy brushed nickel hardware. The cabinetry also includes pull-out kitchen drawers to help with organization.

One of the trailer’s two slides houses the quad bunkhouse, which has three standard bunks and one wider bunk with storage underneath. The bunkhouse also includes three screened windows, a ceiling vent, and a standing wardrobe with shelving for storage.

There is a large 40-inch corner shower with a seat in the bathroom. To make evening bathroom runs easier, the sink has cabinet storage below and above it, as well as an open shelf unit, a foot-flush toilet, and motion sensor lighting.

The 87-inch horseshoe dinette is located next to the large double-door pantry and the plush leather residential couch, which extends into an additional bed in the second slide area. This living area is carpeted for a cozy feel and has two large frameless windows for plenty of natural light.

The master bedroom features a queen-sized bed with an Evergreen Select foam mattress, two hanging wardrobes, and overhead storage. The most exciting aspect of this model is that it has won the DSI multiple times because of its high standards in design, construction, testing, and customer service.

Its Eternabond construction, which includes laminated aluminum framed sidewalls, rear walls, main floor, and slideout walls and roof, contributes to that high standard.

It also has a gel-coated fiberglass exterior, which adds strength while keeping it lightweight. This model also has 3/8-inch walk-on roof decking for easy maintenance and snow load-approved 5-inch truss rafters.

Customers appreciate the spacious shower, large sleeping capacity, and overall quality of this well-built travel trailer. With an exterior length of 34 feet, 6 inches and a width of 96 inches, this travel trailer can go almost anywhere with minimal effort.

Traveling in the Prime Time Tracer Breeze gives you peace of mind no matter the terrain or the weather, thanks to a 12-year warranty on the one-piece TPO roof.

Three years ago, my family sold most of our belongings, bought a bunkhouse travel trailer, moved into it, and hit the road full-time. My husband and I chose a Keystone Cougar 29BHS for our family of five, and after three years and thousands of miles, we are still very happy with it.

As we read and researched our options, we came to expect that our first RV would be like a “starter RV” so we could learn from experience what we liked and didn’t like before choosing one that better fit our needs. This seemed to be the common experience of so many families.

My Top Picks

In case you don’t want to read all the way to the end of the article, we put our top bunkhouse travel trailer picks here:

Coachmen Freedom Express 320BHDS Camper

Heartland north trail 31qbs camper, keystone cougar 29bhs, keystone cougar 34tsb, living in our “starter rv” for three years.

Why do we still love our bunkhouse after three years? We did so much research before buying the best travel trailer —and specifically the best bunk house travel trailer — that we were pretty sure we had covered all the bases and knew what would best suit the needs of our family.

For the most part, we were right. We have customized it in minor ways along the way, but that research before we launched made all the difference. Switching rigs frequently is a hassle, and it wasn’t financially feasible for us, but a little extra homework can help avoid all of that.

Perhaps that’s what led you to this article. Whether you’re shopping for bunkhouse trailers to live in full-time or you just want the right lightweight travel trailers to take some amazing family vacations, I want to help you to be as happy with your purchase as we are with ours.

And because I remember how confusing it gets to have 30 different tabs open on your browser while researching this, I’ve tried to assemble the most useful information all in one place.

From defining travel trailer and bunkhouse camper to exploring the factors you’ll need to consider, with the advantages and disadvantages of different choices, I hope to help you narrow down the needs and priorities of your family.

Finally, I’ve recommended ten different bunkhouse travel trailer models, all with personal travel trailer recommendations from myself and other full-time families we’ve met in our travels, including floor plans for easy comparison (bunkhouse floorplan). Let me be your guide to this important part of your journey.

What is a Travel Trailer?

A travel trailer sometimes called a bumper pull or bumper tow is a towable RV that connects to the bumper hitch of a vehicle and is moved that way. They are not motorhomes, and they do not need to be towed with a special hitch in the bed of a pickup truck, like a fifth wheel trailer. They come in a wide variety of sizes and models.

What is Bunkhouse?

A bunkhouse, or bunk room, in an RV, is a sleeping space with bunk beds that is separate from the master bedroom and main living area. Typically, the dedicated sleeping space has a door that can be closed for privacy, making the bunkhouse its own room.

Advantages of Bunkhouse Travel Trailers for Families

Since the bunkhouse travel trailers offer extra sleeping space for children, they are perfect for families (just like a house with bunk bed setups). Once children are in bunk beds, parents can close the door and use the rest of the trailer without disturbing their little ones.

Children usually enjoy having their own bunk bed space and the option to close the door for privacy. Most families can easily imagine circumstances when it is advantageous to have separate rooms. Overall, a trailer with a bunkhouse feels more spacious and more like home.

Bunkhouse travel trailers also tend to be lighter and can be towed with a variety of vehicles. While a fifth wheel trailer can only be towed by a pickup truck, a travel trailer can also be towed by larger SUVs, which can be very helpful for large families, families with young children in car seats, or those who occasionally travel with guests.

Disadvantages of Bunkhouse Travel Trailers for Families

Many families find that a travel trailer feels too small for their needs. They prefer the higher ceilings and increased storage space of a fifth-wheel trailer (including overhead cabinets for storage space). Travel trailer often has less space and weight margins for cargo. Ultralight models are built with weight-saving construction that can be less durable, and it can be hard for children to remember to use the space gently.

A Bunkhouse RV / travel trailer rarely come equipped with conveniences such as washing machines and dishwashers that can come in handy when traveling with children. Finally, freshwater tanks and both black and grey water waste tanks are smaller, and many families find them limiting if they do not always park with full hookups.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

New or used bunkhouse travel trailer models.

In order to find the best bunkhouse travel trailers, you can also consider a used bunkhouse travel trailer brand will save budget-conscious families a lot of money on the purchase price. If purchased from a dealership, they will often come with some kind of limited warranty, but buying them privately is a greater risk.

A disadvantage of buying used is that the rig will likely have some degree of wear and tear from normal use. A bunkhouse model has most likely been used by a family with kids, which often means it has endured a little more use (or abuse) than a trailer that has only been used by adults. Check any used model thoroughly before purchasing.

Cost is not the only disadvantage of buying new. In our experience, many new RVs end up needing multiple repairs before everything is working as it should. Yes, these repairs are all covered by the manufacturer’s warranty at no additional cost, but that is often little consolation if your brand new rig spends weeks or even months in a repair shop, wreaking havoc on your travel plans.

A used rig can actually end up needing fewer repairs if it has been well-maintained, as the previous owners have gone through the hassles and inconveniences of working all the kinks out of it.

Number of Beds

Consider how many permanent bunks your family needs and wants and limit your search to models that provide this many beds. While the specs may assert that the trailer sleeping space allows up to ten people, examine how those bed spaces are counted.

Usually, this involves converting dinettes and jack knife sofa into beds. On our rig, converting the sofa to a bed allows no walkway from the master bedroom to the bathroom. So while we could technically use this as a sleeping space, it is not practical.

bunkhuse travel trailer bed

Chances are one reason you are looking for bunkhouse travel trailers is to avoid the need to remake the dinette into a bed every night while also making sure that everyone has their own bed to retreat to at any time of day.

So look at models that have enough permanent bunks for everyone in the family. The more beds you need, the fewer options you have available. There is a wide variety of floorplan options available in a wide range of sizes for those who only need two bunks. Three or more bunks are not difficult to find, but the options are more limited.

Number of Slides

More slideouts give you more floor space and storage space without adding significantly to the dimensions of your trailer. Many families prefer to look for a rig with as many slides as possible.

Slideouts add weight and one more moving part that can break and need repairs. They also increase your dimensions when parked, which can limit your ability to park in smaller or more narrow spaces (small camper). Opposing slides give the most spacious and open feeling inside the trailer but are also more likely to make your rig too wide for some campgrounds.

Pay attention to how you are able to use your trailer with one or more slides pulled in. Can the bathroom door or refrigerator be opened? Can you walk through to the bedroom? If all slides must be out in order to use the essentials, then carefully consider how you intend to use it and if you anticipate always being able to park in spacious campsites.

Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Length

Similar to the number of slides, the overall length is often a compromise between how much space you would like to have while inside the trailer and keeping your options open for where you will park it.

For example, if you are planning a road trip to visit national parks, keep in mind that RVs that are under 25 feet in length are welcome in 93% of America’s national park campgrounds while staying under 37 feet still gives you access to 60% of them.

Rigs over 40 feet in length can park in just 7% of campgrounds in national parks. For more information about different RV lengths and restrictions in specific national parks, check out this resource .

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Options

Weight / Tow vehicle

If you already have a pickup truck or larger SUV that you want to use to tow your travel trailer, investigate how much weight your vehicle is able to tow and restrict your search to trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) below that limit. It might seem obvious, but it can be very tempting to stretch the limits a little bit in order to add a little bit more length or an extra feature that caught your eye. It truly isn’t worth gambling with your family’s safety on the road.

You may see a trailer listed with dry weight and a cargo weight capacity. The dry weight means that all cabinets and tanks are empty. The gross vehicle weight rating is the sum of these two numbers. Remember that you will not always want or be able to tow with all tanks empty, so it is important to consider the gross weight when pairing your trailer with your tow vehicle.

For a complete guide to tow vehicles, weight ratings, and more, use this resource from Trailer Life .

Consider the size and layout of the kitchen if you are preparing food for a whole family in it. Can the refrigerator reasonably hold enough food for your family, or will you need to shop nearly every day of your trip? Is there enough countertop space or overhead storage ?

Is it important for you to have an oven or a microwave? Larger rigs, especially those with opposing slides, often have a kitchen island, which gives the kitchen more storage and countertop space.

However, many large families are completely satisfied with a smaller kitchen. Only you can answer what your individual preferences are and if this is likely to be a source of frustration for you. But it is definitely a factor worth considering.

Is an outdoor kitchen a priority for you? Some families love the option of cooking meals outside, while others rarely use their outdoor kitchens. Since many floorplan builds borrow space from the bunkroom to add the great outdoors kitchen or eliminate the outdoor kitchen to increase the size of the bunkhouse, this is another factor to keep in mind.

Dinette seating

For our family, the ability to comfortably gather our family around the table for meals, regardless of the weather, is non-negotiable. Since we are a family of five, a U shaped dinette was a priority for us. This limited the models we were willing to consider when purchasing our rig.

A surprising number of bunkhouse travel trailers offer permanent beds for up to six people but a dinette that only fits four. If this is also a priority for your family, it is a factor to pay attention to.

Recommended Models

As RV travel becomes increasingly popular among families, the number of bunkhouse travel trailer options seems to multiply. While it’s wonderful to have so many models to choose between, it might feel overwhelming trying to find the best bunkhouse travel trailers for your family. We can help.

This list of 10 recommended models represents a variety of sizes and exterior features, so it’s likely at least one or two of them will meet your needs. Most are available new or used with a variety of years to choose between. Note that different years will have slight variations in bunkhouse layouts and specs, but this overview gives you a starting place to narrow down your options.

Best of all, these rigs are road-tested by real families who are not just using them for weekend getaways or summer vacations but living in them full-time as they travel the country. If they’ve stood up to thousands of miles and full-time use by families with kids (e.g. with an area resembling a living room), and the families still recommend them, then they deserve to be on this list.

My full-time family and other like-minded families we’ve met along the way would like to share with you the best and worst features of our bunkhouse travel trailers.

Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Comparison Chart

Coachmen Freedom Express 310BHDS | RVT

With this travel trailer by Coachmen, you will appreciate the ease of towing behind your family vehicle. All the tanks are located under the floor to lower the center of gravity for increased storage capacity and improved handling down the road.

Advantages: This rig offers plenty of cargo space, including a grand design large pantry in the kitchen. Opposing slides give a spacious feeling in the main living area and allow space for a kitchen island. An additional slide in the bunkhouse gives the kids plenty of space.

Disadvantages: Tank space sometimes feels limited, particularly the freshwater tank. This model is long and heavy for a travel trailer, which limits tow vehicle options.

Coachmen Freedom Express 320BHDS

Advantages: The bunkhouse has a great layout with plenty of floor space. The bathroom includes a bathtub, which families love. This is a lightweight model that saves on towing costs and keeps your options open for tow vehicles.

Disadvantages: This layout places the bathroom right next to the master bedroom, which some families do not prefer. There is very limited countertop space in the kitchen. This model does not have an outdoor kitchen.

Floor Plans:

Heartland North Trail 31QBS

Advantages: This model offers three bunks plus a booth dinette in the bunkhouse. This table is great for crafts, puzzles, Lego building, and coloring. It can also be converted to a bed to give four permanent beds. The U-dinette has a separate bunkhouse room for the whole family, and the bathroom has a bathtub.

Disadvantages: The bathroom can’t be accessed when the slide is in. It would sometimes be convenient if the tanks were larger.

Keystone Cougar 29BHS

Advantages: Opposing slides in the main living space gives a spacious feel and a great kitchen layout with a lot of countertop space. The bunkroom slide adds a lot of floor space for playing. The outdoor kitchen includes an extra refrigerator, which can allow families to stock up and avoid frequent shopping trips. The built-in bike rack is a nice perk, as is the king-sized bed in the master bedroom.

Disadvantages: The location of the bathroom may be inconvenient for families. There is no storage anywhere near the entry door, nor wall space for hooks, so there is no convenient place to keep shoes and outerwear.

Best Hunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30 ft: Winnebago Minnie 2455

Winnebago Minnie 2455BHS | RVT

Don’t let the name mislead you, the Winnebago Minnie packs maximum features into an easy to pull light weight camper. A full 8' wide box provides ample living space and the power slide out creates even more!

Advantages: This Minnie is small and light! Staying under 30 feet opens up a lot of options, and it is light enough to give flexibility in choosing a tow vehicle. U-dinette is great for family meals. The bunk beds are double beds (double bunk), which can be more comfortable for older children.

Disadvantages: This model does not have a bunk area in the sense that the bunk beds are in a room of their own with a door that shuts. It is included as an example of a common floor plan to have bunks in a smaller trailer.

Full-time families who live in this model solve the privacy issue with curtains and other creative solutions. The queen bed is also not in its own room with doors that shut, since there is only a partial wall at the foot of the bed. Parents may not appreciate the lack of privacy, either. The storage space in this model is very limited.

Winnebago Minnie 2455

Prime Time Avenger 32QBI

Prime Time Avenger 32QB | RVT

This trailer features and design elements that are considered to be “Best In Class” and rarely found on the competitions are used to fully maximize customer enjoyment.

Advantages: Opposing slides in the living area give generous floor space and allow for a kitchen island for added countertop space. The U-dinette is also roomy to accommodate the whole family around the table. The slide in the bunk room gives plenty of floor space there too. The extra refrigerator in the outdoor kitchen is a bonus that many families really appreciate.

Disadvantages: The location of the bathroom so far from the bunkhouse can be seen as a disadvantage. This rig is long and heavy, which limits your options in choosing a tow vehicle and may, at times, limit where you can take it.

Prime Time Avenger 32QBI

Keystone Outback 293UBH

Advantages: This model is a great compromise between space and gross vehicle weight rating. It is a very lightweight option for a bunkhouse travel trailer with all the necessary features. It is also a very affordable option. The slide gives extra floor space, and the extra refrigerator in the outdoor kitchen helps families stock up on groceries.

Disadvantages: The master bedroom is very small, without many walkways at the foot of the bed. The booth dinette is on the small side for the whole family to sit together for meals. The kitchen is small and offers limited countertop space.

Keystone Outback 293UBH

Keystone Outback 31RQS

Advantages: Families that want four bunks without converting a dinette or sofa into a bed in the bunk room; this is your rig. The bathroom is very convenient for kids, and the linen closet is a nice feature. There is good storage space.

Disadvantages: This trailer is heavier than other trailers of a similar size. The kitchen has very limited countertop space. While this camper has permanent beds for six people, the booth dinette can only comfortably seat 4.

Keystone Outback 31RQS

Keystone Bullet 287QBS

Keystone Bullet 287QBS | RVT

Step into this single-slide Bullet travel trailer to see just how convenient camping with a larger family can be. The private bunkhouse is a wonderful location to house any guests or children that you have traveling along with you.

Advantages: This trailer is relatively light for as much space as it provides. The bunkhouse has great space and storage. The outdoor kitchen is practical, and the extra refrigerator is a feature many families really appreciate.

Disadvantages: The master bedroom is very small and doesn’t have much space to walk around the foot of the bed. The slide is also small. While this trailer has permanent beds for 5, it is difficult to fit five people around the table in the dinette. Countertop space in the kitchen is limited.

Keystone Bullet 287QBS

Highland Ridge Open Range 310BHS

Highland Ridge Open Range 310BHS | RVT

This Open Range model offers a spacious living and kitchen area, plus a private sleeping room that the kids or overnight guests will surely love to call their own.

Advantages: Holy Slides, Batman! This model’s four slides, including opposing slides in the living space and one in each bedroom, give this rig a lot of interior space. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and an island. The bunk room has good floor space to play and plenty of storage.

A coat closet by the door is very practical, and the master bedroom closet is a great feature! This is a travel trailer that might not know it isn’t a fifth wheel.

Disadvantages: The combined sofa/dinette area has plenty of seating, but only two small tables and the seating is in a straight line, all of which is less than ideal for family meals.

Young children, in particular, may struggle to eat at such small tables while seated on a sofa, and the trailer lacks a good place for coloring, crafts, building Legos, or other activities kids do at the kitchen table.

Highland Ridge Open Range 310BHS

I hope this has been a helpful resource in your search for the right bunkhouse travel trailer for your family. While there is no such thing as a perfect RV, if you know your needs and priorities, it is definitely possible to find one that your family loves. See you on the road!

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30-35 Feet?

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30-35 Feet?  The big advantage of choosing a short travel trailer, under 30-35 feet, is that it is easier to drive, maneuver to park in an RV park, and tour around with the trailer between travel cities. In addition, a bunkhouse saves space and weight, allowing a large number of people to sleep and rest in a somewhat limited space. Not to mention that children love bunk beds.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are a popular choice for entry-level seasonal RV campers as well as full-time families looking for extra space for the kids. Here’s our pick for the best bunkhouse travel trailers to fit any budget and travel style.

Don’t Forget To Pin It For Later

What Is A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer or simply bunkhouse RV is a type of recreational vehicle that is towable and has a floor plan that includes bunk beds in it. Bunkhouses can contain double, triple, or quad bunks; it totally depends on how much space you need for camping. Bunkhouses come with floor plans of different lengths and layouts that are perfect for both a luxurious camping style and for those who prefer simpler and modest camping.

What Are The Factors To Consider When Buying A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

To help you make the best decision, here are some of the factors you need to consider when buying bunkhouse travel trailers.

Weight & Tow Vehicle Capacity

It’s necessary to know the towing capacity of your vehicle because this will determine the maximum amount of weight that your vehicle can tow. When looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer, narrow your searches down to trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) below your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity.

How Many People Will Be Sleeping

An obvious factor to consider is, of course, the number of people that will be sleeping inside the travel trailer. You would want to choose a large enough trailer that can comfortably accommodate all the people that need to sleep inside. Several units on the market are spacious and can accommodate large families so you won’t have to convert other areas of the trailer to a sleeping space.

Brand New Vs. Used Units

Depending on your preference and budget, you can get either brand new units or choose units that are used. There are some advantages and disadvantages with each option, make sure you choose what works best for you.

New Bunkhouse Travel Trailer

Pros: Manufacturer’s Warranty, You can choose the exact Travel trailer you want, no previous owner

Cons: Premium price

Used Bunkhouse Travel Trailer

Pros: Lower price, Issues may already be fixed by the previous owners

Cons: Possible that it may have other hidden issues, Previously owned, limited options

Remember to make thorough research before you buy a brand new or used bunkhouse travel trailer.

On average, trailers can go for as low as $10,000 and can even reach up to several hundred thousand dollars depending on the layout/floor plan and the overall quality and features that come with the trailer. Used trailers can be a good option if you’re on a limited budget, but keep in mind the pros and cons of getting one.

Size of Trailer

Height, width, and length should be considered when choosing the best bunkhouse travel trailer.

Bunkhouse trailers usually require more length than non bunk models, and more length means more space, but also keep in mind space it will need for parking and RVs below 25 feet in length are welcome in 93% of America’s national park campgrounds but and as the length increases your travel options can also be limited.

The height and width should be considered as there are still bridges and tunnels that are not designed with a large RV in mind. Always know the measurements of the trailers before buying.

Keeping Your Travel Trailers Secure

Travel trailers are no exception to the prying eyes of thieves. They may take some important things inside or worst-case scenario, take the whole trailer leaving you stranded along with your valuables. Although this may be alarming, you can always do something about it. Here are some clever ways to keep your motorhomes secure and safe.

  • Install good and reliable RV security system
  • Use hitch lock or coupler lock to prevent thieves from attaching your trailers to their truck and then take off.
  • Use wheel locks or clamps, it is an instant visual deterrent for thieves and you might see this being used by police officers on illegally parked cars. You can completely immobilize the trailers if you place these on the tires.
  • When storing your travel trailers, keep them in your garage or a place that you feel will be secured. Avoid parking it in empty spaces where it is out in the open most of the time.
  • When parking, if possible place the rear door of the trailer close to a wall or any permanent structure to make it even harder for thieves to steal it.

The Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers of 2024

quad bunkhouse travel trailer 2022

Bunkhouse floorplans are unique, providing more sleeping space than other floorplans. Families significantly benefit from bunk beds. Whether for grandparents taking their grandchildren on a weekend camping trip or a family heading cross-country , bunkhouses offer designated sleeping spaces for children.

These floorplans are also easier to manage. Instead of converting a dinette or sofa every night, kids can sleep soundly in comfortable beds. No one has to remove cushions or reattach a pedestal table for the day’s events.

A bunkhouse travel trailer is also an excellent option for people who want a more affordable towable RV. Fifth wheels are generally more expensive than travel trailers. So, if you’re a camping family with a limited budget, there are bunkhouse travel trailers to suit your needs.

You’ll notice that trailer models have abbreviations like FK, RK, BH, RL, and others. These letters indicate the type of floorplan. For example, FK or RK means “front kitchen” or “rear kitchen.” RL means “rear living.” If you’re searching for a bunkhouse unit, look for the letters BH. Ten of the twelve models we’ve listed below use this abbreviation. So, not all bunkhouse travel trailers will have the BH, but most do.

What Are The Best 2024 Bunkhouse Travel Trailers?

Couple searching for the best bunkhouse travel trailers at an RV Show

We’ve chosen 12 of the best bunkhouse travel trailer floorplans, ideal for campers looking for additional sleeping space. Whether you need double over double bunks for more than two children or single bunks to provide private sleeping spaces for one or two kids, we’re sure you’ll find a model you love in the list below.

Remember that bunkhouse travel trailer floorplans need room for bunk beds, which means the living space is usually smaller. Unless you’re willing to go long and heavy, you’ll have to sacrifice space in the kitchen, dining, and living areas to provide the individual sleeping space of bunk beds.

Here’s our list of the 12 best bunkhouse travel trailers of 2024:

  • Heartland Mallard M26
  • Forest River Campsite Reserve 23LM
  • Jayco Jay Flight SLX 184BSW
  • Coleman Lantern LT 274BH

To make them easier for you to compare, we’ve separated them by RV manufacturer:

Keystone Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Keystone RV is a well-respected brand in the RV industry. Cole Davis founded Keystone in 1996. Since then, the company has worked its way to the top of the towable RV market. Today, there are over one million Keystone owners, making the brand the top manufacturer of towable RVs in North America. Currently, Keystone produces travel trailers, toy haulers, fifth wheels, and destination trailers.

Keystone Springdale Classic 1800BH

Travel Trailer Specs

  • Length: 20’6”
  • Dry Weight: 3,036 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,314 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

Why I Chose It: Compact, simple design

The Keystone Springdale Classic line offers single-axle travel trailers towable by light-duty vehicles. The 1800BH features a rear corner set of bunk beds next to a full bathroom. There’s a small kitchen equipped with a 3.3-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator, a microwave, a sink, and a two-burner gas range.

I love the simple design of this trailer. There are no slide-outs, which limits the interior space, but this also reduces potential repairs and overall wear-and-tear of these mechanisms. The kitchen and bathroom have everything you need to cook and clean without all the extras, making the Keystone Springdale 1800BH budget-friendly.

Across from the kitchen is a booth dinette with overhead storage for pots, flashlights, s’mores roasting sticks, and more. A queen bed sits in the front of the trailer. There’s more overhead storage for clothes and a closet to stow dirty laundry or hang jackets.

If you’re a family of three or four, this bunkhouse travel trailer floorplan is an excellent option since it gives each person a private sleeping area and a place for the family to gather at mealtime. You can also utilize the dinette for card games or rainy-day art activities.

  • Dry Weight: 3,020 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,330 pounds

The Keystone Hideout Sport 175BH also has the rear single over single bunk beds beside the bathroom. I love this layout – and the previous one – because of the kids’ easy access to the bathroom. The bathroom is just a foot away if there’s a nighttime emergency.

The refrigerator is half the size of the Classic unit’s, at 3.3 cubic feet, but the kitchen still has a microwave, two-burner cooktop, and sink. There’s also the booth dinette with overhead storage, the queen bed with shelf storage, and a closet. The Keystone Hideout Sport 175BH has a 10-foot powered awning, just like the Springdale Classic.

Like the Classic 1800BH, the Keystone Hideout Spot 175BH is an excellent option for a small family who just wants the basics. If you want an entry-level trailer with space to accommodate three or four people, this bunkhouse travel trailer may be perfect for your needs.

Forest River Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Forest River is one of the giants of the RV empire. The company not only has its line of travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, destination trailers, tent campers, and motorhomes, but it also owns other brands like Coachmen, Dynamax, Palomino, East to West, Prime Time, and Shasta.

If you’ve been to an RV show or walked around the campground, you’ve likely seen dozens of Forest River units. While narrowing down such a large selection is challenging, I’ve chosen four Forest River models to make the list of the top 12 best bunkhouse travel trailers in 2024.

  • Length: 32’9”
  • Dry Weight: 6,421 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,253 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

Why I Chose It: Ample storage

If you need a large travel trailer with a bunkhouse, the Forest River Campsite Reserve 26CJ is one of the most spacious options on my list. It features rear corner double over double bunk beds, so there’s room for each to sleep two kids. Beside the bunks is the full bathroom, again conveniently located near the kids for nighttime emergencies.

In the center of this bunkhouse travel trailer is a large slide-out with a booth dinette and sofa. The kitchen has an L-shaped countertop, providing plenty of room for meal prep. The front bedroom has a king bed, and the exterior features an outside TV mount and a small kitchen.

What I love most is the ample storage throughout the unit. There’s a cabinet next to the bunk beds for the kids’ clothing. There’s more storage underneath the bottom bunk for extra toilet paper or toys. Behind the entertainment center are hidden shelves for pantry storage, and there’s a separate pantry closet to help stow away pans and kitchen gadgets. In the front bedroom, there’s overhead storage and a closet. The Forest River Campsite Reserve 26CJ is full of storage options.

  • Length: 21’9”
  • Dry Weight: 2,995 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,498 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5

Why I Chose It: Basic, no frills

The Forest River Wolf Den 16EV resembles the Keystone Hideout Sport and Springdale Classic. It’s a little over a foot longer but even more basic, as it boasts electric appliances only – hence the ‘EV’ in the name. This model has no stovetop, and you won’t have a propane furnace for extended-season camping. It does have a sink, a small refrigerator, and a microwave air fryer. The bathroom also doesn’t have a sink but only a shower and toilet.

There are rear corner single over single bunk beds and a queen bed up front. I like how the Wolf Den 16EV is a step up from a tent camper but doesn’t break the bank by offering too many unnecessary amenities. If you like simple camping, this model is ideal. There’s room for a family of three or four to sleep comfortably. The dinette is a bit small, but if you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll likely eat at the picnic table.

The Forest River Wolf Den 16EV is one of the lightest travel trailers on this list, perfect for campers without heavy-duty trucks. You can safely tow this bunkhouse trailer with an SUV, minivan, light-duty truck, and possibly a sedan. It’s a budget-friendly trailer for a family wanting to go outdoors for a weekend camping trip.

  • Length: 31’9”
  • Dry Weight: 5,795 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,930 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 9

Why I Chose It: Separate bedroom

I love that this Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf has a front bedroom separated from the rest of the unit. This gives parents or grandparents privacy you don’t find in some of the smaller travel trailer bunkhouses. The second entry in the bedroom also allows adults to enjoy an evening outside after the kids have gone to bed without worrying about waking them once they re-enter the trailer.

There are also double over double bunks near the rear corner bathroom. The booth dinette and sofa allow plenty of lounge space for family games or movie nights. The outside kitchen also provides another space for meal prep and an easy way to enjoy the outdoors.

  • Length: 31’8”
  • Dry Weight: 6,116 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,598 pounds

Why I Chose It: Upgrades for more comfort

The Forest River Alpha Wolf 26DBH-L is similar to the Cherokee Grey Wolf. It has double over double bunks, a U-shaped dinette, a sofa, a separate front bedroom, and an outdoor kitchen. What I love most about this unit are the extras that make this bunkhouse travel trailer feel more like a home on wheels.

An electric fireplace underneath the entertainment center provides added warmth on cool fall evenings. A porcelain toilet in the bathroom is more durable than the standard plastic one. Finally, the 20-foot awning offers ample shade to create more exterior living space. Plus, this travel trailer features a fiberglass exterior instead of the corrugated aluminum.

East to West Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Forest River, Inc. owns East to West. It’s one of the newest brands to hit the RV industry. Lisa Liegl Rees founded it in 2017, and the company currently manufactures travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class C motorhomes. It has a smaller lineup than other brands, with only six travel trailer lines, four fifth wheel lines, and two Class C lines.

  • Length: 33’9”
  • Dry Weight: 6,917 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity:
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

Why I Chose It: Double entry, true living room

The Longitude is brand new in 2024. The 285BH features double over double bunks and a full bathroom in the rear. One major reason it makes the list of best bunkhouse travel trailers is the separate entrance to the bathroom. This provides easy access for kids to wash up after playing outside and a place to drop dirty shoes without dragging mud through the trailer.

I also love the layout of this travel trailer’s living room. The sofa and dinette are on opposing sides, with the entertainment center in the middle. This makes the space feel homey, ideal for a family who enjoys watching TV or movies on a Friday night.

This bunkhouse travel trailer also features a front bedroom separate from the rest of the unit, providing privacy for the adults. There’s also an additional wardrobe in the East to West Longitude 285BH that the other models on this list don’t have.

Heartland Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Heartland has been in the RV industry for two decades. They manufacture models ranging from lightweight travel trailers to triple-axle toy haulers across 20 towable lines. The Landmark fifth wheel was its flagship trailer in 2004. You’ll find a wide range of price ranges to suit all types of budgets and various floorplans for all types of RVers.

  • Length: 31’6”
  • Dry Weight: 5,780 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,804 pounds

Why I Chose It: Spacious interior

The Heartland Pioneer BH261 is similar to a few other models on this list. It features the double over double bunks and a bathroom in the rear corner. It also has a second entrance directly into the bathroom, which I love. This Heartland Pioneer trailer also has a separate front bedroom.

The booth dinette and sofa are side by side in a large slide-out, and the kitchen is against the opposing wall. One thing I love about this layout that’s different from the other travel trailers with bunkhouses is that the kitchen isn’t an L-shape. The countertop doesn’t stick out into the living space, creating a very open, spacious area. The kids can play on the floor without hitting their heads on the countertop, and the dogs can roam around with plenty of space.

  • Length: 30’11”
  • Dry Weight: 5,640 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,954 pounds

Why I Chose It: Single entry, fiberglass exterior

This Heartland Mallard travel trailer is similar to the Pioneer bunkhouse. It also has double over double bunks next to the rear corner bathroom, a booth dinette and sofa in a large slide-out across from a full kitchen, and a separate front bedroom.

However, this unit doesn’t have a second entry in the bathroom. Some families will appreciate that because it’s not another door they have to lock and prevent younger children from escaping. The Mallard also features a fiberglass exterior, while the Pioneer is built with corrugated aluminum siding, giving this unit an upgraded feel.

Jayco Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Jayco is one of the most respected and well-known brands in the RV industry. Lloyd Bontrager founded the company in 1968 and debuted his innovative lifter system for pop up campers. Today, with over 55 years of experience and over a million units sold, Jayco is one of the leaders in the industry. The brand produces every class of travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and motorhomes.

Jayco Jay Flight exterior

  • Length: 29’5”
  • Dry Weight: 4,580 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,420 pounds

Why I Chose It: Ample sleeping capacity

With the capability to sleep up to ten, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 260BH is a lightweight bunkhouse travel trailer with the space a large family needs to enjoy a weekend camping trip. The double over double bunks measure a  spacious 48” by 76”, and the jackknife sofa provides an additional sleeping area. Plus, the booth dinette also converts if you need another place to sleep.

With no slides, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 260BH may seem smaller than other units, but I love how Jayco designed this floorplan to create the most space possible. For example, there’s no sink in the bathroom. Instead, the kitchen sink is right outside the bathroom door. The countertop is small, but with the dinette table just across the room, parents can use it for an additional meal prep space if needed. And Jayco still provides a separate front bedroom for the adults.

  • Length: 21’8”
  • Dry Weight: 3,140 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,010 pounds

Why I Chose It: Compact, lightweight design

Another Jayco Jay Flight SLX model with bunks is the 174BH. What I love most about this travel trailer is the size. For a camping family who owns an SUV or a smaller vehicle, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH checks all the boxes. With a dry weight of under 3,200 pounds and a length of under 22 feet, it’s light enough and short enough to be towed by smaller vehicles.

While you won’t have some amenities in other bunkhouse travel trailers, you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable, enjoyable weekend camping trip. The single bunks are 29” by 75” and are directly next to a bathroom with a shower and toilet. The only sink is in the kitchen, which includes an 8-cubic-foot refrigerator, a microwave, and a cooktop.

There’s a booth dinette for mealtime and a queen bed for the adults. The overhead storage throughout the unit also provides ample room for kitchen gadgets, clothes, blankets, flashlights, and other camping gear.

Coleman Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Coleman has been synonymous with camping and the outdoors for decades. Their lightweight bunkhouse travel trailers are some of the most affordable models on the market today, and the Keystone RV company actually manufactures them.

  • Length: 22’10”
  • Dry Weight: 3,587 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

Why I Chose It: Maximum space, no slides

This lightweight, single-axle travel trailer with bunkhouse has two 48” by 72” bunks in the rear corner next to a full bathroom, which features a walk-in shower. This unit also has a bathroom and kitchen sink, even with its smaller length. The booth dinette converts into another sleeping area and sits directly across from the kitchen, ideal for preparing meals.

I love the Murphy bed layout of this bunkhouse travel trailer because it allows for more family space during the day. While the similarly-sized Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH has a dinette and a set bedroom, the Coleman Lantern LT 18BH has both a dinette and sofa. You can lounge with the kids on the couch, but when it’s time to go to bed, the space quickly becomes a sleeping area for the adults. This Coleman travel trailer with bunkhouse maximizes the interior space, even without slide-outs.

FAQs About Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Keystone Springdale trailer driving on dirt road

You may have a few more questions to help you find the right bunkhouse travel trailer for your family. Here are the most popular questions about this type of floorplan.

What is a bunkhouse floorplan in a travel trailer?

A travel trailer is a towable RV. Some people call it a “bumper pull” because it attaches to a hitch on the tow vehicle’s bumper. A travel trailer can have many of the same amenities as a fifth wheel or motorhome.

While some RVs have a separate room for the kids to sleep, a bunkhouse doesn’t have to be separated from the rest of the interior space. If bunk beds are in the floorplan, then it’s considered a travel trailer with a bunkhouse, whether those bunks are open to the living area or closed off with a separate door. Check out these additional travel trailer floorplans that offer ample space for a camping family.

What is the most popular travel trailer length?

Generally, a travel trailer with a bunkhouse will be longer than a travel trailer without bunks because it’s necessary to add length to incorporate this additional sleeping space. However, some manufacturers take away a feature to keep the length short. For example, a bunkhouse model may only have a dinette instead of a dinette and a sofa, so there’s room for the bunks in the same interior space.

Travel trailers can range from 12 feet to 40 feet long. They vary significantly in size and weight because there are many different floorplans. The average bunkhouse travel trailers are 20-30 feet long, but floorplans with a separate rear bunkhouse will be longer. It’s also important to know your local regulations regarding RV length so you follow the road restrictions in your home state.

What size is a double bunk in a travel trailer?

I mentioned that some of these best bunkhouse travel trailers feature double over double bunks. Usually, these bunks measure around 48” wide by 76” long. For older kids, these bunks may only sleep one. But for younger children, families can take advantage of these oversized bunks and sleep two per bed. I encourage you to learn more about RV mattresses , their sizes, how they differ from residential mattresses, and the different types we offer at Camping World.

Does Airstream make a bunkhouse?

Airstream is well-known as one of the top brands in the RV industry. The company has been making trailers since the 1930s. However, Airstream only manufactures one floorplan with a bunk bed option: the Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk . This 31-footer sleeps up to eight or nine people, depending on if you have the single over double bunk or the double over double bunk option.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are excellent units for camping families. Whether you’re a grandparent who takes out your grandchildren occasionally, a full-time traveling family who needs personal space for everyone, or a single parent who wants to make memories with your child on weekend getaways, there’s a floorplan to suit your camping style and needs.

This article claims the Springdale Classic has a 7.7 cu refrigerator and a 14 ft awning. In all the searching on Camping World inventory I have yet to find a unit with this. I only see 3.3 frig and 10 ft awning.

' src=

Hi Michael!

My apologies, as I just reached out to Keystone and they confirmed that 3.3-cubic feet is the standard fridge size for the 2024 model year, down from the 7.7 cubic foot standard in the 2023 model year. They also confirmed that the 10-foot awning is now standard on new models. Thanks for bringing this to our attention so we could update these specs in the article!

Of course, you have to give up on space when compared to the larger bunkhouse trailers, but the best under 30 ft bunkhouse travel trailers offer everything you'd expect from a quality trailer.

Albeit, a little tighter, they still offer privacy, comfort and luxury amenities necessary for you and the children to enjoy your every road trip. They're also cheaper, more economical to run and you will be welcomed into pretty much any RV park across America.

But which under 30 ft bunkhouse travel trailer to get? We have reviewed some of the best ones on the market to help you in your research. As well as offering our opinion on certain trailers, we've also included a guide on what else you should know before buying one.

This bunkhouse travel trailer has made it to our list with its 3 sleeps. There is a murphy bed along with two bunker beds that cater to the needs of a large family easily. It also has a 7 cubic feet refrigerator in it, which lets you store all the fresh food items. This and the pantry make things quite simple and easy for the vacationers.

Furthermore, there are 3 foldable solid steps that help you get into the trailer easily. In addition to these, there are two pass-through storage spaces at the sides of the trailer . They keep all the necessities in easy reach of users.

What Do I Need to Know Before Buying?

Well, it is no secret that you need to be careful when it comes to buying a bunkhouse. This is why we have jotted down some aspects that will help you make the right purchase.

Number of Bunks

The number of bunks is a primary consideration when you are buying a bunkhouse travel trailer, especially an under 30 ft model. Most of them have two bunkers, which are enough for an average family, but you can choose a three bunker trailer too if you have more people vacationing with you.

The length of these travel trailers is very important because they have to be large enough to fit everything in them. Of course for anything under 30 ft, your trailer is going to be restrictive, so always make sure you are comfortable with the length and space available.

Living Space

The living area space matters a lot, too, when you are buying a travel trailer. This is the place where your family spends the most time, so it should be spacious and comfortable. Also, aim to get as much entertainment accessories as possible.

Finding The Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers: A Buyer’s Manual

What is a bunkhouse travel trailer.

The term “bunkhouse” refers to the unit’s floor plan, which includes at least two bunk beds. These are usually (but not always) relegated to the rear of the trailer. Some larger units will also include a master bedroom area with a full or queen-sized bed .

Benefits Of Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

What benefits do bunkhouse travel trailers have to offer? Plenty, as it turns out. While the layout may seem like a broad, unspecific reason for choosing a certain type of trailer, it can add immeasurably to your camping experience.

  • Privacy —Having a separate sleeping space ensures that the whole family can travel together in comfort
  • Convenience —No need to transform the dining table into a bed and back again
  • Ease of transport —Bunk beds are space savers, making the trailers easy to tow

Also, bear in mind that if you purchase a bunkhouse travel trailer that’s under 26 feet in length, the unit will be more compact and maneuverable. This will give you more options when it comes to choosing campgrounds and RV sites for your rig.

Features To Look For

In order to choose the travel trailer that best suits your needs, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with a few basic guidelines. Here are the things that should be foremost in your mind as you begin your search.

This is arguably the first factor you should consider when making any type of purchase, but it’s especially important when you’re selecting your home away from home.

Although it’s certainly possible to find a bunkhouse-style model at a budget price , as a rule, you should invest in the highest-quality travel trailer you can afford.

There’s a good chance that cheaper brands have skimped on material and appliances in order to keep costs low, which means the trailer is likely to show early signs of wear and tear.

The interior floor plan layout of the travel trailer should have a natural flow, making it easy for you to move through the space without bumping into the furniture and appliances. While this can be a scarce commodity in smaller models, the quality brands should offer both form and function.

Similarly, you should make sure that the unit is large enough to accommodate everyone in your group . If you’re looking for a bunkhouse trailer configuration, you’re probably planning on traveling with your family, so keep the dynamics of the group in mind when you’re checking out floor plans.

Also, if the bunk beds are going to be used by adults, you’ll need to ensure that they’re long enough to accommodate taller frames.

Are you planning on taking your travel trailer on the road during the winter months? If so, make sure the unit is equipped to withstand frigid temperatures. Some models might require a separate “arctic package” to make the conversion complete.

Creature Comforts

Most travel trailers are outfitted with basic furniture, along with kitchen appliances and bathroom facilities.

Some high-end models, meanwhile, will also include special features like big-screen TVs and sophisticated awning fixtures.

While you might appreciate these benefits, they’ll also contribute to the overall cost and upkeep of the camper. Keep that in mind before you make a decision.

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Under 26 Feet: Product Review Guide

As the name suggests, this travel trailer is exceptionally lightweight for its size, with a dry weight of under 5,000 pounds. That makes it a great fit for most medium-duty trucks, SUVs, and minivans.

The bunkhouse has a double-bunk configuration, with beds measuring 48 inches wide by 72 inches long . The Murphy bed in the master bedroom area is only slightly longer but wide enough to accommodate two people.

Two wardrobes on either side of the Murphy bed offer ample storage space. The dinette can be converted into a bed that sleeps an additional two people.

This unit features attractive driftwood interior features, a ducted furnace, and a 13.5K-BTU air conditioner (with the option to upgrade to 15K).

Its kitchen area is well-appointed and easy to traverse, and there’s a generously-sized TV situated just above the dinette. The aluminum construction is exceptionally sturdy, despite its low weight.

If you’re looking for a modestly-sized unit that will be right at home in campgrounds or RV parks, the Flagstaff Micro-Lite 25LB could be just the ticket.

Specifications:

Length: 25 feet, 11 inches

Height: 10 feet, 4 inches

Width: 96 inches

Dry Weight: 4626 pounds

Sleeps: 6 people

Fresh Water: 58 gallons

Gray Water: 30 gallons

Black Water: 30 gallons

Awning Size: 18 feet

This unit doesn’t offer quite as much living space as the Forest River Flagstaff series, but as smaller units go, it’s worth a look.

First off, we should mention that the majority of the interior space is taken up by the generously-sized beds.

The two bunks measure 28 by 75 inches , which should be long enough to accommodate most adults; while the bed in the main sleeping cabin measures 54 inches wide and 80 inches across.

There’s also a small dinette that can be converted into a fifth sleeping space, capable of accommodating two more people (preferably children, as the space is a bit cramped).

The Sportsmen Classic 181BH passes our size test with flying colors, measuring just 20 feet and 9 inches long.

That gives it additional points in the maneuverability department, especially since its dry weight is just 3000 pounds.

Note that its freshwater tank tops off at just 20 gallons, so long-term boondocking is probably out of the question.

Still, campers who prefer to spend the majority of their camping trips enjoying the great outdoors should find plenty to love about this unit.

Length: 20 feet, 9 inches

Height: 9 feet, 4 inches

Width: 7 feet

Dry Weight: 3000 pounds

Gray Water: 15 gallons

Black Water: 15 gallons

Awning Size: 14 feet

The Jayco Jay Feather 7 19BH is one of the company’s more recent models, meaning that its features are impressively up-to-date.

Like the previous two listings, it offers a double-bunk configuration, with a queen bed in the master bedroom and a dinette that can be converted into another bed (note that the dinette sleeping space is designed for just one person).

As far as layout is concerned, it has more in common with the Sportsmen model than with Forest River’s offering, although it is slightly longer at just over 22 feet.

The sleekly designed front profile of the Jay Feather gives it aerodynamic capabilities that are ideal for easy towing.

Wood cabinetry and vinyl plank-style flooring lend the interior a sophisticated appearance and hold up well to repeated use. The power awning is an especially useful feature. Before you decide to buy, check with the seller to find out what upgrades might be available in the future.

If you’re interested in keeping your carbon footprint as small as possible, this offering from California’s Lance Camper should be right up your alley. All of the company’s models are constructed to be toxin-free and ecologically friendly, and they’ve been turning out quality units for more than five decades.

This is a hefty unit, designed for larger families or groups of friends who want to hit the road together.

The bunkhouse boasts a triple-bunk configuration , with beds that are roomy enough to accommodate adults, and the dinette area can host an additional two sleepers.

The queen-sized bed in the master suite can also be configured as a sofa to open up space (note that you’ll have to ask for this option in advance).

Intriguingly, the bunkhouse can also be converted into a storage area, perfect for holding bicycles or other camping equipment. Be aware that the 2185 is fairly heavy for its size, so you’ll need a vehicle with a decent towing capacity.

Length: 25 feet, 8 inches

Height: 10 feet, 2 inches

Width: 8 feet, 3/4 inches

Dry Weight : 6000 pounds

Sleeps: 7 people

Fresh Water: 45 gallons

Gray Water: 45 gallons

Black Water: 45 gallons

Awning Size: 18 feet (doesn’t come standard; available as an add-on)

Although the CL16BHB has a ultra lite compact appearance from the outside, you’d never guess it if you’d only seen the interior.

Although it measures just 20 feet long , the layout makes it easy to maneuver through the space without tripping over anything.

The kitchen and bathroom facilities are generously appointed as well, with vinyl flooring that’s easy to clean—an essential commodity in small spaces. The benches in the dinette area feature vinyl upholstery as well, which makes cleanup duties even simpler.

Unlike the other units on our list, this one doesn’t include a separate master bedroom area—the double bunks and the converted dinette are the only sleeping spaces available.

That means the CL16BHB can only sleep four people, making it a no-go for large groups. This ultra lite travel trailer is a great option for couples or small families, however, this unit has plenty to offer.

Length: 20 feet

Height: 10 feet

Dry Weight: 2870 pounds

Sleeps: 4 people

Fresh Water: 26 gallons

Gray Water: 25 gallons

Black Water: 25 gallons

Awning Size: 10 feet

In Conclusion

Although we would recommend any of the travel trailers listed here, the KZ Sportsmen Classic 181BH is our favorite.

As the name suggests, it’s a classic no-frills travel trailer that’s designed to embellish the camping experience, rather than replace it.

That said, the large and comfortable beds are the main reasons for its status as number one. It can be difficult to get a good night’s sleep in a trailer this small and maneuverable, but the 181BH manages to check off all the appropriate boxes.

Best of luck, and happy camping!
