Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip.     Day 1 - Bangkok bangkok bustle

Welcome to Bangkok, the beating heart of Thailand, where futuristic skyscrapers rub shoulders with ancient temples. After dropping your bags and giving your first sawasdee ka a go (no one said Thai was easy), meet up with your crew and get ready to explore one of the most fun cities on Earth.

We’ll head toward tuk-tuk mad streets to start things off with a foodie tour beneath the neon lights of nearby Chinatown. From steaming bowls of Guay Jub (rolled noodle soup) to succulent roasted duck, prepare for a delicious adventure. The golden rule is to follow the locals—if there's a line, grab a plastic stool and dive in.

After your first taste of Bangkok, head to the Chao Phraya River, which snakes its way through the urban chaos, grab rooftop drinks, and take in the evening glow from the Tetris tower to the gold-roofed Grand Palace. Congrats, you made it to Thailand!

thailand food vendor

Day 2  - Bangkok urban tales

Grab a coffee with the crew before we tour the capital. Bangkok's famous for blending different elements together, and today, we'll see a bit of it all so that by the evening, you'll understand how this 15th-century trading post became the most visited city on Earth.

Kick off the day in the colorful stalls of the Flower Market and discover the spiritual importance of lotus, jasmine, or orchids. From there, we'll head to Little India for an intro workshop into Thailand's sacred khon masks before stopping for lunch and then continuing on to Wat Pho to check out one massive golden Buddha.

In the evening, you'll hop in Bangkok's iconic, colorful tuk-tuks and head out for dinner and drinks with the crew. To round out an action-packed day in the city, check out Khao San Road's chaos and give that world-famous nightlife a go!

Day 3 -  Bangkok, Chiang Mai North Country

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we're heading to the airport and swapping the capital city for lowkey Chiang Mai in the mountains of northern Thailand.

Set between dense jungle and rice-paddy countryside, this city of just over 100,000 people is a mix of ancient ruins, historic sites, and natural wonders. After dropping your bags at the hotel and freshening up, kick back and relax, or head out and explore on your own.

That evening, we're off to a nearby farm-to-table experience to dive into more Thai cuisine and explore Chiang Mai's culture as we cook everything from curries to stir-fry and spring rolls with the locals.

Day 4 - Chiang Mai Friendly Giants

Thailand may be known for its crazy capital, golden beaches, limestone mountains, and spicy cuisine, but in the north, it’s the wildlife that’s impossible to miss. Elephants have played an important role in the region for centuries, and today, we're heading to a certified humane sanctuary for an experience you'll be bragging about for years.

Our local third-party partner has a 22-point ethical vetting process, so when you meet our mahout and learn all about the importance of elephants in Thai culture, tradition, and history, you’ll be doing it the right way. We’ll hand over some snacks and watch these smiling creatures eat up before we sit down for a picnic lunch ourselves.

After a day with Chiang Mai’s friendliest locals, head to the famous night market for some Pad Thai or mango sticky rice with friends, and then grab drinks at the bars nearby.

Day 5 - Chiang Mai, Koh Lanta to the islands

Today, we're grabbing an early bite at the hotel and then catching a flight down south for a beach getaway. We’ll skip the more touristy areas like Krabi and Koh Samui in the Bay of Thailand and instead head to the beautiful Andaman Sea, where we’ll cruise past iconic Phang Nga Bay and wind up on the sandy shores of Koh Lanta.

Check out the Old Town with the crew—with traditional wooden shophouses lining the streets to the bay and a super local vibe, it's like stepping back in time. After a bit of market fun and island history, grab a drink at the relaxing beach bars that dot the coast.

That evening, we'll all meet up for an island feast and another Singha or two. Welcome to paradise in the Thai islands.

Day 6 - Koh Lanta Paradise boat club

Grab a hat and sunscreen; it's time for some island hopping. Today, we're cruising out on the blue-green Andaman Sea for a full day of swimming, laughing, and living the tropical good life.

Expect lush islands and hidden lagoons hugging limestone cliffs. Dive in, snorkel vibrant coral reefs, and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins jumping just off spectacular beaches. You'll have lunch on board as you chill out in total paradise and make memories to last a lifetime.

After a day of bliss, we’ll turn back to Koh Lanta as the sun begins to set on Thailand. Head toward one of the island’s laid-back beach bars for spicy Tom Yum Goong with friends.

“In Bangkok, where one sees sky trains and people on high-speed Internet - and at the same time, you see people making offerings to spirit houses on their land. Or you walk the streets, and see saffron-robe monks waiting for alms-givers to give them food in the morning.” - Pitchaya Sudbanthad

Day 7 - Koh Lanta PAddle away

Unwind, sleep in, have a relaxing morning, and then get ready for some mangrove magic —w e’re heading to the sea to hop in kayaks for an excursion through Koh Lanta’s maze of winding waterways and tangled roots.

These lush forests, which play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem, are teeming with biodiversity, so keep your eyes peeled! After paddling through the glassy labyrinth, you’ll wind up back in the old town where you can grab lunch with friends.

The afternoon’s free; if you’re into hiking, explore the trails of Mu Ko Lanta National Park (just watch your things; monkey theft is no joke). If you’re stuck on beachy vibes, check out Long Beach, or head south for the sleepier scene at Kantiang Bay. That night, it’s time for a farewell dinner as we celebrate a week of amazing scenery, chaotic cities, and brand-new best friends.

Day 8 - Koh Lanta Sawasdse e Ka

Now that's how you visit Thailand! After a week of Thai adventure, today, we’re cruising out of Koh Lanta and making our way back to Krabi and the real world.

If you're heading home, safe travels! If you're one of the lucky ones, extending your stay in Thailand or adventuring further into the heart of Southeast Asia, we are fully on board. There's tons more to see out here. You've got everything from beachy island paradise to jungles, megacities, and ancient ruins at your fingertips!

A rental car in Cambodia may be fun, a motorbike in Laos might be even more (just be safe). If you're up for another great FTLO adventure, check out nearby Bali or Vietnam!

Just for fun

Songkran, Thai New Year, is celebrated with a country-wide water fight.

Thailand is the world's largest exporter of the stinky yet delightful Durian fruit.

about Thailand

Thailand, affectionately known as the Land of Smiles, is conveniently located in the heart of Southeast Asia. This tropical haven is renowned for its culturally rich tapestry, steeped in history and tradition, its phenomenal cuisine, and its breathtaking natural landscapes, ranging from verdant mountains and dense forests around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to picturesque beaches and pristine islands in the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand. With so much to see, eat, and do, it's no surprise that tourism is hugely important to the economy. While some Thailand vacation packages focus on just one aspect of this amazing country, our Thailand tours are geared toward seeing it all.

Good to Know

Thais speak, you guessed it, Thai! One of Asia's tonal languages, it's not exactly easy.

The currency in Thailand is the Thai baht.

Tipping is not expected in Thailand.

A trip of a lifetime.

“The itinerary is special and our guide welcomed us with open arms to Thailand. My favorite parts were exploring temples, canoeing through bat caves, observing elephants, and seeing bioluminescence! So many great memories to be had on the other side of the world.”

– Sidney, traveled on Thailand Getaway Feb. 2023

Amazing Trip!

“Great trip! Saw so much of the country, and got to fully experience and appreciate the culture! The family-hosted dinner and the National Park trip are 100% worth doing. Our Tour Director, Dream, was amazing. She helped set up plenty more to do outside of the scheduled itinerary.”

– William, traveled on Thailand Getaway Jan. 2023

The official language of Thailand is Thai. While it may feel awkward at first, attempting the local language goes a long way when navigating a city and interacting with people. Practice these basic phrases to get started:

  • Hello: Sawasdeeka (female) / Sawasdeekrub (male)
  • Goodbye: La korn
  • Please: Karuna (kah-roo-nah)
  • Thank you: Khob khun ka (female) / Khob khun krub (male)
  • Pardon me: Kor thod
  • No: Mai chai
  • Cheers (for drinking): Mod kaew

Thailand is tropical and extremely historic. What more could you want?! As you prepare to spend time in this warm and glittering destination, here are some expert tips to help you understand the ins and outs of Asia, and feel like a true local:

  • Head and toes: In Thailand, the head is considered a sacred body part, and the feet are the least. Out of respect, never touch anyone in the head and never point at anything with your feet.
  • Begging: You may see monks begging, especially in busy cities like Bangkok. However, Monks are not allowed to beg for money or food so if you see this, it means this person is posing as a monk.
  • Shoes: You will likely be asked to remove your shoes in certain homes, restaurants, or temples. It is a rule of etiquette to abide by this request.
  • Street Food: It’s safe, and it’s delicious! Try to stick with vendors that have a long line to make sure you’re getting the best of the best.
  • Nightlife: From Bangkok to the beaches, you’re sure to find some fun nightlife in Thailand. While Thailand is very safe, we still recommend using the buddy system, and only using licensed taxis to get around.
  • GrabTaxi: This is basically Thailand’s version of Uber. You can use this app to order a taxi, and it’s a safe and reliable way to get around!
  • Bartering: Especially at the markets, if something doesn’t have a visible price tag you should try to barter! A good starting point is half the cost the merchant suggests.

Food & Drink

Guaranteed to put your town’s local Thai place to shame, prepare to dive into a fusion of ancient tradition and modern practices that is the gastronomical paradise of Thailand. Read on for tips, tricks, and delicacies you must try.

  • Guay Teow : AKA, noodle soup. This is one of the most popular Thai dishes and you can find it almost everywhere.
  • Som Tam : Or spicy papaya salad, som tam hails from Northeastern Thailand and is another popular dish. A classic som tam is usually shredded green papaya, tomatoes, carrots, peanuts, dried shrimp, beans, lime, and pleeenty of chillies.
  • Tom Kha Gai : Similar to tom yum, this is a chicken in coconut soup and offers a lower-spice opportunity to taste all the flavors of tom yum.
  • Laab : A “salad”, but really it’s a mixture of meat or mushroom and mint; NOT recommended for those with low tolerance to spice.
  • Pad Thai : You know this one… When in Rome, right?
  • Pad See Eiw : A thick noodle dish, pad see eiw consists of wide rice noodles stir-fried in dark soy sauce mixed with chicken, pork, or beef plus Chinese broccoli or cabbage.
  • Khao Pad : Fried rice. A fan favorite
  • Panang : Or, Thai curry. This is a bit milder than other curries in Thailand, which is what makes it so popular.
  • Kai Jeow : One of the simpler dishes of Thailand, this is an omelette usually served on rice with sweet chili sauce. A great way to start the day!
  • Kao Niew Ma Muang : Mango and sticky rice. Just the dessert you needed!

Note: Chopsticks are a staple of Asian cuisine and culture. Attempting to use chopsticks instead of western cutlery will earn you some respect with the locals, but be wary of using chopsticks to point at someone, poke at food, or play them like musical instruments - these are all signs of disrespect.

We plan it all. And then some.

Our group trips to Thailand come with everything included. That’s accommodations, flights (unless you wanna book your own), activities, and an expert Tour Director who can help you find spicy noodles that aren’t too spicy.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

Thailand Trip Itinerary

All packed and ready to go? Woop woop! It’s time to leave all those worries behind and head to the airport. We’ll be waiting for you at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) or the less commonly used Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). One of our trusted drivers will be standing with a sign with your name. Like all our other group tours, the first day is all about settling in and finding your bearings. We suggest aiming to arrive in the middle of the day to give you time to freshen up, explore the day markets, or just catch up on some sleep. We’ll head out for dinner and drinks at one of our favourite spots this evening! 📍 Location: Bangkok 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Airport pickup, getting settled in, dinner & chilled drinks

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok

Today we really mix it up with a visit to a local temple before getting a real taste of Bangkok’s back alleys before finishing the afternoon racing around the crazy streets by Tuk Tuk. After a busy sweaty day, it’s time to relax with a traditional local massage. After dark, we’ll do it Thai style on the world-famous Khao San Road for cocktail buckets and beers. 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Walking tour, local temple visit, Wat Pho & Thai massage

Day 2: Temples & street food… yum 🥢

Start the day with a cruise down the River of Kings as we head to one of Bangkok’s ancient temples. You’ll no doubt pick up an appetite but don’t worry, the local markets we’ll visit will satisfy your taste buds. In the afternoon, we jump aboard the overnight train as a group, sharing memories and reminiscing about the first few days in Bangkok!! 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: River cruise, Wat Arun, Wang Lang Market & overnight train

Day 3: Time to shop, relax and grab the night train

There is no place like it; as you arrive at Cheow Lan Lake, it will come to you… ‘WOW, this place is incredible’. We stay overnight in floating bungalows in 1 of the oldest evergreen rainforests in the world. Spend the afternoon sipping on cold beers while relaxing in a tube or going for a paddle in the kayaks. You might be lucky enough to hear or even see some wildlife. 📍 Location: Khao Sok National Park 🍽️ Included meals: Lunch & Dinner 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Floating bungalows, tubing & kayaks

Day 4: Welcome to the Khao Sok National Park

Today we say goodbye to the jungle (after a secret stop) and hello to the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of southern Thailand. As we arrive in Krabi, we’ll take to the steps of the infamous Tiger Cave viewpoint. The views from the top are pretty special, and you’ll no doubt meet the families of monkeys along the way. We’ll finish the day with a well-deserved feast and a few drinks to celebrate. 📍 Location: Krabi 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Tiger Cave viewpoint

Day 5: Let’s head south to the beaches

Krabi is home to some of the most incredible beaches in the world. After some chill time at the rooftop pool, we’ll take a longtail boat to the world-famous Railay Beach, home to towering limestone cliffs and white sandy beaches. There is no better place to top up your tan, relax and enjoy the tropical beauty of southern Thailand. 📍 Location: Krabi/Railay Beach 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Boat trip to Railay & Phra Nang Beach

Day 6: Thailand in all its beauty - Railay Beach 😍

Most of you have been waiting for this part of the trip. When you think of Thailand, you imagine island life, sunsets, beach bars, and fire shows. Well, guess what? Phi Phi has it all. We’ll explore secluded lagoons and snorkel in crystal clear waters by day. By night we’ll no doubt get our dancing shoes on with a splash of UV paint before hitting the bucket bars at the island beach parties. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: 2 x Breakfast & 1 x Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Ferry, speedboat trip, snorkelling, fire show & beach party

Day 7-8: Let’s go island hopping…

Today is a much-needed chill day for the group, as the last 9 days have been truly EPIC. After waking up with a ‘Chang-over’, you’ll be glad to know the day is pretty relaxed. We’ll no doubt find time to visit the Phi Phi viewpoint, but you can tackle the day in your own way. Today is the perfect opportunity to go scuba diving. It’s not something we include on our trip, but you have the time, and we suggest the morning rather than the afternoon to give you enough surface time before the flight up north. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Free day & Phi Phi viewpoint

Day 9: Time to recharge and hang by the pool ☀️

A short domestic flight from the south will take us to the Jewel of the North... Chiang Mai! The city, surrounded by mountains and jungle, screams adventure and is the perfect place to continue our trip. We’ll drop our bags and head to the food market to try some northern flavours! 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Travel day, flight & night food market

Day 10: Where the adventure truly begins

Not every day you get the opportunity to tick off a bucket list experience... Well, today is that day. We start early and make our way into the jungle to find Thailand’s most sacred animals in a truly magical place. After taking a short walk through the rice terraces, we’ll spend time feeding them in a safe & ethical environment. We’ll finish what’s already been an incredible day, with our local guide showing us around the historic Old Town. 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Elephant sanctuary, walking tour & markets

Day 11: Have you ever met an elephant? 🐘

Time to ‘find yourself’ in the most chilled and hippie vibes South East Asia has to offer. Home to some of the warmest locals, Pai is an ABSOLUTE must, and you’d be crazy stupid not to visit. We’ll spend these few days tubing down the river, soaking in the natural hot springs and getting physical with a beginner's Muay Thai session. We’ll also find time to wander the IG famous bamboo bridge and relax with a bunch of other backpackers at the Pai Canyon. 📍 Location: Pai 🍽️ Included meals: 2 x Breakfast & 1 x Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Tubing (seasonal), Muay Thai class, hot springs, bamboo bridge & Pai canyon

Days 12-13: Pai, the hippie capital of Thailand

We’ll say goodbye to Pai and hello again to Chiang Mai. After some chill time, we’ll learn the secrets of preparing local Thai cuisine with an authentic Thai Cooking Class. Our local friends won’t just have you filling your faces with delicious food, but they’ll be filling your hearts with good vibes. Today will be a day you’ll never forget, with a night full of reminiscing and heartfelt goodbyes. 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Cooking Class 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Cooking class

Day 14: Learn to cook like a local

It’s not going to be easy, but today is checkout day and the time to say goodbye after an incredible 15 days in Thailand. I’m sure you’ll be reminiscing over breakfast and trying to piece all those happy emotions together before you set off on your journey home or to your next destination. The tour finishes in Chiang Mai, and most people book a return flight into Bangkok, so you’ll need to consider that and book a connecting ticket. We suggest leaving Chiang Mai in the morning and booking a flight from Bangkok late afternoon (we always recommend planning 4 hours between landing and your next flight). The final day has no plans, so you can leave anytime that works best for you! 📍 Location: Chiang Mai 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Check out & onward travel ⁉️ Important: Those who opted for the longer Best of Asia - 29 day trip will continue on.

  • Extend your trip and join us on another tour
  • Taste your way through the Chiang Mai night markets
  • Load up on caffeine in Chiang Mai’s many coffee shops
  • Head back to Bangkok and get lost in the big city
  • Fly south and visit some of the other islands
  • Slide in the DMs and ask the team for further ideas

Day 15: It’s time to check out and say your goodbyes

Trip Preparation

Do I need a visa?

For most travellers, Thailand is a very easy country to visit with a simple ‘Visa on Arrival’ process. This includes a long list of different countries* including; the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and most of Europe. The ‘Visa on Arrival’ allows you 30 days when entering Thailand by air. If you don’t qualify for the ‘Visa on Arrival’, you can apply for a visa here . *You must check your visa eligibility as we are not visa experts. The information above is general in nature. Here’s a blog that we put together to help; ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.

What vaccinations do I need?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date official guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination and immunisation history on file. All destinations and areas we travel to are generally low risk but best to be on the safe side. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website .

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to stay up-to-date and ensure you join us on the Thailand tour without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Travel insurance is an essential part of your trip preparation. It’s not only a smart idea to get covered, but it will also give your loved ones peace of mind. We actually require all customers to show proof of coverage at the beginning of the tour. We’ll need to see your name, area of cover and dates that the insurance is valid. It’s a good idea to get this sorted ASAP to ensure you’re covered for all eventualities.

Will I receive a packing list?

You sure will, once your trip is confirmed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a bunch of useful information, including an ‘Arrival Guide’. Within this guide, you’ll find a packing list, safety and cultural information and some useful tips to prepare for your trip.

Should I bring a backpack or a suitcase?

Most people do prefer travelling with a backpack, and it’s generally easier when moving around, but it’s not uncommon for some travellers to bring a suitcase. We suggest bringing something you are comfortable with carrying and lugging around. It’s also important to bring a small day bag that can hold enough for an overnight trip or those travel essentials. Click here to read a blog we wrote on this, ‘Backpack vs Suitcase - What is best for travelling?’

Is there a limit to my luggage weight?

We suggest not going crazy with the packing and keeping it simple. Try and bring loose/floaty clothing that isn’t too thick or heavy. No need to bring heels or walking boots. Bring a few warm layers during Dec and Feb, as it can get a little chilly in the north. We limit the luggage to 20kg per person. Best to leave the kitchen sink at home 🤣

Are there laundry services on tour?

There will be a few opportunities to do laundry throughout the trip, but we always suggest bringing enough underwear and essentials for the full trip. Your Group Leader will let you know the best time to do laundry, but this usually doesn’t happen until 4 or 5 days into the tour.

Do I need to bring a towel?

There are towels provided for showering and freshening up at all the hotels we stay at. We suggest buying a microfibre towel or large sarong as they are small and dry fast for use on the beach and swimming.

How much spending money do I need?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Thailand adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400, but this should be the bare minimum. We suggest working from an average of £400-500/$500-700 over 2 weeks, this will cover things like shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What's the best way to manage my money?

We always recommend having a few different options when managing your money while on the road. Having your everyday bank/ATM card with you as a backup is always a good idea, but we strongly suggest signing up for a travel/currency card. Most of these cards can be managed through an easy, easy-to-use app. There are ATMs throughout the trip, and we suggest grabbing some local currency when you arrive at the airport.

Will there be a Whatsapp group?

You’ll receive a final email with useful information to help with your arrival approximately 2 weeks before the trip. This includes a link to a private Whatsapp group for the tour date that you’ll be travelling on. It’s a great place to chat with the rest of the people on the tour and your Group Leader. If you’ve not already, click this link and join the ‘Feel Free Family’ Facebook Group . The FB community is ideal for discussing how things work with past and future travellers. Add yourself to the group and make a post asking who else has booked or thinking about booking the same date as you.

Your Arrival

When should I arrive on Day 1?

We suggest aiming to arrive during the middle of the 1st day, it’s not essential, but it will give you time to freshen up before we head out for dinner and drinks. You’ll be grateful for that little extra time to relax, soak up some afternoon sun or just go for a wander and explore the local area.

Can I arrive a day or 2 early?

Absolutely! We actually recommend arriving a day or 2 early to give you more time to recharge and enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ before the tour begins. There might be experiences on your bucket list that we don’t include on the trip, this is the perfect time to fit them in.

Will I get an airport pickup?

Anyone arriving on Day 1 or who decides to book pre-tour accommodation with us will be picked up by our trusted drivers when they land. They’ll be standing waiting at the airport with a Feel Free Travel sign, so you’ll have no issues finding them 🙌🏼

Which airport should I fly into?

Most of the big international airlines will fly in through BKK (Suvarnabhumi International). If you’re on a low-cost airline or 1 of the Asian airlines, you may come in via DMK (Don Mueang International). Both options are good, and we’ll pick you up from either… no worries!

How do I know where to meet at the airport?

We’ll email everyone up-to-date arrival instructions 2 weeks before the trip with exactly where to meet the driver. Once you get picked up, we’ll get you back to the hotel and check-in. If your flight is running late, don’t worry, we’ll be tracking your progress on Google and will be waiting for you to arrive.

What’s the plan for Day 1?

The first day is the ‘Arrival Day’, there isn’t a huge amount planned. It’s the perfect day to relax, catch some sun and get your bearings. In the evening, it’s time to meet your new travel family, as we’ll be taking you all out to one of our favourite spots for dinner and chilled drinks.

After the Trip

What time does the tour finish?

All our tours finish on the morning of the final day, this will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport ready for that flight home or onto your next destination.

What happens after my tour?

It really depends from group to group… sometimes we’ll have a whole bunch of people hanging out once the tour has finished, travelling for days, weeks or even months together. But in others, you’ll have many people going their separate ways. As the trip unfolds, you’ll soon learn about each other's travel plans and share ideas for what adventures lie ahead. The hardest part is saying your goodbyes and giving your last big hugs to the people leaving straight after the trip ends.

Can I get help with return airport transfers?

You sure can, our Group Leaders are available throughout the trip to chat about your onward travel plans. They will be there to offer help and assistance when it comes to booking flights, taxis, buses, and ferries. It’s always a good idea to get your flights booked before you arrive, including any internal flights after your tour.

When should I book my return flight?

We always suggest booking your return flight later on the final day. This will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport and enough time to say your goodbyes and leave without any stress or worries. The airport is approximately 20-45 minutes from the hotel in Chiang Mai.

Can I stay longer and extend my trip?

You sure can, we don’t offer the option to extend your stay, but our awesome Group Leaders are eager to help and support your onward travel plans. You’ll no doubt get ideas from other group members as the trip unfolds, so keep those ideas to yourself until you meet the group.

I’m doing more than 1 trip, how do I book my connecting flight?

We suggest booking those connecting flights soon after booking your big international flights. We’ve written a whole blog to help when planning flights, click here to read more .

Do I get help with onward travel?

Whether you’re on a short break from work or a slightly longer backpacking adventure, our Group Leaders will help with everything from return airport transfers to giving you a bunch of ideas for the rest of your time in South East Asia and beyond.

Thailand Trip FAQs

Is there wifi on tour.

Almost all the places we stay on tour have free WIFI allowing you to stay connected with friends and family back home. There are certain places we visit that don’t, but we will always give you a heads up in advance so that you can prepare and let your loved ones at home know you may be unreachable.

Can I travel solo/come alone?

Absolutely! Our trips are built for solo travellers, and believe us… sharing new experiences with a group of new friends is one of the best things you can do. A large majority of the people that travel with us are 1st-time travellers doing it alone, so don’t worry, you’ll never be alone with us.

What’s the average age of people on these trips?

Our trips are specifically targeted towards individuals who are young at heart. If you’re between the ages of 18-39 and keen on a new adventure, you’re welcome to join us. We’ve found that the average age of our travellers is 22-32, we also get young travellers straight out of school as well as working professionals in their mid to late 30s.

How big are the group sizes?

We keep our group sizes small, with an average of 12-16 people per group, so that everyone gets to know each other and experience things at an enjoyable pace.

What’s included in the price?

We include most of the big ticket items like accommodation, activities, local experiences, secret stops, local guides, a western group leader and a bunch of meals. We also include an airport pickup on arrival!

What should I expect from the included meals?

You should expect almost all your breakfasts to be included to allow us to get the best out of each day. You’ll also get a few lunches on day trips and the odd dinner. We try and find a good balance between including meals and giving you the flexibility to eat what you fancy.

Do you cater for specific dietary/allergy requirements?

We make every effort to prepare for all dietary requirements and will do our best to support you during mealtime. Please provide clear information during the booking form and chat with your Group Leader during the first few days.

What’s not included?

You’ll just need to sort your international flights , travel insurance , visas and spending money 🙌🏼

Do we stay in hostels or hotels?

The accommodation on our trips is something we do better than anyone else, and our tours definitely wouldn’t be the same without the awesome places we stay. We’ve handpicked these places to give you the perfect balance of comfort, security and convenience. We really do love where we stay, and so do all our happy travellers 😍

Who will I share a room with?

All solo travellers will pair up with other travellers of the same sex… girls with girls & guys with guys. If you are travelling with a friend, let us know, and we can put you together… same if you are travelling as a couple, we will arrange a double room where possible. You can upgrade during the booking form if you’d like your own room.

Can I combine more than 1 trip together?

It’s common for our travellers to combine 2 or more of our trips. Our trips have been specifically programmed to allow you to do just that. You can often finish 1 trip on the same day another trip is just starting. After all, flight tickets are not cheap, you might as well maximise your experience if you have the time!

How do I book?

Booking your trip couldn’t be easier, find a trip that takes your fancy, pick a date, reserve your spot with a deposit and get that flight booked…

We always recommend reserving your spot before booking your flight. When our trips are full… unfortunately, they are FULL 😬 Check out our ’How it Works’ page for more information on booking your trip!!

This all seems too good to be true, how do I know it’s legit?

This is a question we recently added to our FAQs as we hear it time and time again, so we wanted to give you all a few ways to verify who we are;

  • We are a UK registered company No.10549017
  • Read our reviews on Facebook , Google & Trustpilot
  • Join our Facebook Group ‘Feel Free Family’
  • Follow our journey on Instagram

Is This For You?

We understand that travelling solo can be nerve-racking and often overwhelming. If you’re looking for a hassle-free experience from the moment you land, this is the Thailand trip for you! Most people travel solo, or some come with a friend/partner, either way, by the end of this adventure, you’ll have a bunch of new buddies for all those future travel plans!

If you’re all set and can’t wait, join us on this Thailand group tour... Book Now and reserve your spot with a small deposit of as little as £1.

Why Thailand?

Like many first-time backpackers/travellers to Southeast Asia, Thailand is where it all started for us way back in 2011. After an exciting few months of solo travel involving long nights out, a few slight mishaps, and maybe one or two missed ferries, we had the time of our lives and along the way we developed a few kick-ass itineraries. We wanted to show the world there is more to Thailand than just buckets, shit-shirts, and ping-pong balls. We decided to put it all together and include everything a first-time visitor of Thailand would need to see or do. And there you have it! The first TruTravels trip, ‘ Thailand Experience ’, was born. The original trip has now grown to include ten unforgettable trips across Thailand where you can experience it all - care for elephants, zipline over the jungles of Chiang Mai , spend a night in a floating bungalow in Khao Sok National Park, or party the night away on the beaches of Koh Phangan , Koh Tao, and Phi Phi. This is a country you cannot miss. It is the best place to go as a first time traveller or an experienced backpacker...either way our Thailand tours will show you another side of Thailand and let you experience travelling in a stress-free way!

About your trip

Thailand: Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destination and a hedonistic spot that’s firmly on the backpacker trail; you’d be forgiven for wondering if it’s been ‘done’.

Your answer? It hasn’t, and this adventure is proof.

Yes, you’ll get the chance to dip your toe into the famed intensity of the Khao San Road and witness the country’s golden temples. But it’s the adventures you haven’t heard of before that really make this one special. Like experiencing the drama of Phuket’s coastline on a jet ski safari, zipping beneath towering limestone cliffs and pulling into small islands before turning back into the sunset. Or taking a long-tail boat to your floating raft house, where you’ll sleep above a glassy lake in reach of waterfalls and mountains where hornbills and monkeys hide. There’ll be moments of bonding as you cook up a storm with your group, learning traditional cooking techniques from a local family, and a chance to lap up the luxury together on Phuket’s stunning beaches.

So you see, Thailand will never be ‘done’. If anything, this is how lifelong love affairs with the country begin.

Your Itinerary

  • October – April
  • May - September

Day 01 Sawadee, Bangkok

Card image

Your Thailand vacation has officially begun. Well known for its outlandishness, Bangkok is a city where towering skyscrapers cast shadows over ancient temples. Where ultra-modern shopping malls abut centuries-old markets. The contrast between old and new is obvious here, which is, perhaps, its charm – Bangkok is undeniably, unashamedly, Bangkok. Having been picked up at the airport by your private driver; you’ll have had a sneak peek of this wondrous mayhem en route to your boutique hotel, where you can refresh with your arriving group, safely tucked away from the madness beyond. After a late-afternoon welcome meeting, you’ll board your waiting river taxi outside the hotel and make your way to your first traditional Thai dining experience. The best bit? The restaurant is directly opposite the Wat Arun Temple, which will become illuminated gold by the sunset as you sit down to feast. You’ll finish the night with drinks at one of Bangkok’s best sky bars.

Day 02 The Old City & an overnight train

Card image

This morning you’ll board your private long-tail boat from outside the hotel and head to the canals of Old Bangkok. Here you’ll sail past a riverside community that still buzzes on, as it has done for hundreds of years, with modest wooden shacks rising up alongside the water. The most special moment comes next, however, when you’re taken to a small local temple that lies off the tourist trail. Here you’ll be able to make a traditional Buddhist offering amongst the quietly worshipping locals. Afterwards you’ll enjoy a lunch of street food from local stalls and visit some architectural marvels, including Wat Pho and the reclining golden Buddha. Tonight, you’re off on a different adventure: an overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani. This is a local (rather than luxury) experience and you’ll get a real insight into authentic Thai life, as you pass through rural villages, rice paddies and verdant countryside.

Day 03 Green living in Krabi

Card image

A private minibus will be waiting at the train station to transfer you to the white sands of Krabi. You’ll be staying a little away from the main action amongst lush jungle landscapes. Take time to relax and enjoy your luxe eco-retreat, making use of the inviting pool, booking in for an exclusive spa treatment or strolling down to stunning Ao Nang Bay to watch the sun sink into the Andaman Sea. After a day of blissful relaxation, tonight you’ll head out for a dinner with your group at an atmospheric local restaurant. Hidden down a side street away from the main strip, here you can sample authentic Thai cuisine, from spicy papaya salad and fragrant soups to BBQ seafood and colorful sticky, sweet desserts.

Day 04 Forest kayaking

Card image

Pure magic will be the order of the day today as you kayak through a flooded forest to Nong Thale Crystal lake. Your guide will take you to a secret spot, paddling through narrow gorges between huge limestone cliffs. Hidden away with this gnarled otherworldly waterscape, the lagoon’s cool, clear water is a perfect spot for swimming. Back at your hotel, you’ll have the option to visit Railay Beach and go rock climbing on the limestone cliffs. Looking forward to dinner, you’ll be treated to an incredible cooking class where you’ll learn all about Thailand’s fragrant ingredients at a small, family-run restaurant. Led by a lovely couple (whose children will be on hand to help and hand out refreshments), this is sure to be a veritable feast.

Day 05 A night atop a glassy lake

Today you’ll be taken by private long-tail boat to Khao Sok National Park. With its rainforests, caves and limestone islands, this vast national park is yet more proof that so much of Thailand’s beauty remains untouched. Upon arrival on Khao Sok Lake, you’ll pull up to your unique floating raft house. The accommodation may be basic but the location is simply stunning: on a mirror-still lake backed by limestone mountains. Once settled, you’ll be welcomed with a delicious Thai lunch, followed by time to swim in the perfect water and make use of the free kayaks. You’ll then set off on a private boat excursion to hike to a roaring waterfall and explore the surrounding landscape. As the sun starts to set, you’ll cruise back to your abode ready to enjoy dinner washed down with an ice-cold beer.

Day 06 Sunrise wildlife & Phuket

Card image

If you’ve never experienced the stillness of a picturesque lake at dawn, this is the time to do it. Wake early and embark on a private wildlife safari as the mist slowly evaporates and the sounds of gibbons calling echoes across the water. Back at the raft house with the sun firmly risen, you’ll enjoy breakfast and some more time to make the most of the kayaks and swim, before you’re taken by long-tail boat back to the pier for the next part of your adventure. Your Pack Leader will help you choose a good spot for a local lunch before your transfer on to sparkling Phuket Island. Upon arrival at your hotel, you’ll look forward to three glorious nights sleeping in the same spot.

Day 07 Your coastal jet ski safari

Card image

This might just be your most exciting day yet. After a slow morning spent enjoying breakfast, the beach or your hotel’s beautiful Thai spa, it’ll be time for your jet ski safari. Riding in pairs and taking turns to drive, you’ll explore pristine isles you’ve likely not heard of before. Like Yao Yai, Naka Island and Koh Li Pe, where you’ll get a chance to experience real desert island perfection. With water so crystalline, here you only need to look down from your jet ski to spot fish and coral beneath you. You’ll experience true freedom today as you zip amongst limestone cliffs, pull into secret bays and keep away from everyone but your own group of newfound friends. Only the setting sun will be your cue to turn back towards Phuket. And what a journey back that will be, racing across the ocean, your silhouettes contrasting against the reddening horizon.

Day 08 Beach club BBQ & sunset cocktails

Card image

From the adrenaline of jet skis to the luxe serenity of a private beach club; today the pace slows and the high life ensues. Spend a much-needed morning enjoying the hotel facilities (it never gets boring, trust us) or exploring the local area. Late afternoon, you’ll be heading to Phuket’s most inventive trend-setting venue to finish your trip off in style. Here, on the pristine sands of Bangtao Beach to a backdrop of funky tunes, you can treat yourself to your favourite cocktail or a traditional Thai massage in between cooling dips in the turquoise sea or gorgeous pool. Facing west, it’s the perfect spot to watch the land and waterscapes transform with the changing colors of the sky. Dancing the night away with a group of new friends as the sun sinks into a Thai horizon? We’ll take that.

Day 09 Farewell, Thailand

Card image

One final breakfast at your hotel and it’ll be time to say goodbye. New experiences, new friendships, and a newfound love for a destination that, despite its popularity, keeps on giving. Be sure to spread the word: Thailand most certainly isn’t ‘done’ yet.

Your Thailand vacation has officially begun. Well known for its outlandishness; Bangkok is a city where towering skyscrapers cast shadows over ancient temples. Where ultra-modern shopping malls abut centuries-old floating markets.

Day 04 Kayaking & cuisine

Day 06 sunrise wildlife & koh samui.

Your Pack Leader will help you choose a good spot for a local lunch before your transfer on to sparkling Koh Samui. Upon arrival at your beachfront hotel, you’ll look forward to three glorious nights sleeping in the same spot.

Day 07 ISLAND EXPLORING BY PRIVATE BOAT

Card image

This might just be your most exciting day yet. After breakfast, it’ll be time for your private speedboat adventure to the protected Ang Thong Marine Park. During your hours out at sea, you’ll explore amongst the park’s 42 pristine isles. Islands you’ve likely not heard of before, like Mae Ko and Koh Wua Ta Lap, where you’ll get a chance to experience real island perfection. You’ll find true freedom today as you zip amongst limestone monoliths, pull into secret bays to snorkel, stop off at a deserted beach for a private lunch and have the opportunity to trek to an incredible viewpoint. Only the setting sun will be your cue to turn back towards Koh Samui. And what a journey back that will be, racing across the ocean, your silhouette contrasting against the reddening horizon.

Day 08 Sunset drinks

Card image

From the adrenaline of speedboats to the luxe serenity of a cool beach bar; today the pace slows and the high life ensues. Spend a much-needed day enjoying the hotel facilities, swimming in the turquoise sea (it never gets boring, trust us) or exploring the rest of the island. Late afternoon, you’ll be heading to one of Koh Samui’s coolest venues to finish your trip off in style. Here, on the pristine sands, you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner of exquisite Thai dishes – the perfect end to a fantastic holiday. With your toes in the sand and a cocktail in hand, you’ll watch the land and waterscapes transform with the changing colors of the sky one final time. Dancing the night away with a group of new friends as the sun sinks into a Thai horizon? We’ll take that.

RIVA SURYA BANGKOK

A modern oasis, Riva Surya offers a reprieve from the frenetic energy of Bangkok. Located by the Chao Phraya River, the Thai-inspired rooms have fantastic views and there’s plenty of space by the pool to kick back with a drink. An ideal introduction to this buzzing city.

Just a few steps from beautiful Nai Yang beach, on the edge of Sirinath National Park, this upscale resort has a laidback tropical feel. Unwind by the lagoon pools, sip cocktails by the beach or sign up for a treatment in the onsite spa, complete with hot tub and steam room.

Card image

KHAO SOK RAFT HOUSES

A unique, otherworldly experience – your time at the floating raft houses will feel like a dream. Wake up each morning to limestone cliffs reflected by the still water outside your door and take advantage of the free kayaks at your disposal to head off across the lake and explore.

Card image

EXPLORAR, KOH SAMUI

Just steps from Mae Nam beach, this indulgent adults-only resort is a haven of island calm. Take a dip in the infinity pool, unwind in the hummingbird garden or work your way through the Thai menu at the glass-walled sea-view restaurant. Oh, and did we mention the happy hour cocktails?

For October to April departures:

Fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). We suggest you fly out of Phuket Airport (HKT), as it is the nearest airport to where we finish the adventure.

For May to September departures:

Fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and depart from Koh Samui Airport (USM), not Phuket.

Please try to arrive before 3 pm on Day 1, although we will arrange an airport transfer for you regardless of when you arrive.

Depart at your own leisure any time on Day 9.

If you arrive on Day 1 of your adventure, or you book pre-tour accommodation with us, your airport arrival transfer will be included. If you book alternative pre-tour accommodation or are arriving by another mode of transport you must arrange your own arrival transfer.

Arrival transfers are private to Flash Pack and will be in groups depending on flight times. Sometimes this means waiting in the airport for a short while until other flights have arrived.

We don’t offer a departure transfer as Flashpackers leave at different times of the day and many stay for extra nights. However, your Pack Leader will offer you support with finding a local taxi.

Please note that tips are not included in the cost of this adventure. Suggested amounts per person are:

  • Pack Leader: 11 USD per day
  • Driver: 3.5 USD per day
  • Local tips: your Pack Leader will be able to advise on how much to tip local guides, porters, waiters, etc. Some Pack Leaders will collect a tipping kitty at the welcome meeting to take care of local tips.

However, all tips are at your discretion depending on what you feel comfortable with.

Please be aware that the itinerary, activities, and hotels are subject to change. These changes are rare but can happen with little notice due to availability, poor weather, seasonal changes, or other circumstances beyond our control – but we’ll always do our best to ensure it has little impact on your experience. From time to time, we may also make changes to your itinerary to try out new ideas and keep things fresh and exciting which we will always try and communicate to you.

You do not need a visa if you’re visiting as a tourist from the EU, UK, USA, Australia or Canada for up to 30 days. Please check with your local consulate/embassy if the country you are travelling from requires a visa.

We recommend that you have at least six months validity remaining on your passport and can show a return ticket.

Excluding alcohol, we’d suggest budgeting the equivalent of £30 (40 USD). That said, if you’re willing to eat like a local it can be a lot less. It is still possible in Thailand to buy a plate of food for £1-2 (1-3 USD).

For the waterfall hike, we recommend that you wear good-quality water-shoes or waterproof sandals, preferably with the heels covered. You’ll be sent a detailed packing list upon booking your adventure.

Travelling by train is a local rather than a luxury experience, but it’s one of the best ways to experience the real Southeast Asia. Here are some notes to help prepare you for the experience:

  • The cabin we are using is a 2nd class sleeper train with 20 bunk beds (maximum 40 people). If you’re a light sleeper, it’s a good idea to bring ear plugs as the cabins can be noisy at night.
  • Private cabins are not available and there is no single supplement option for this part of the trip. You will be sharing your cabin with local people, however, we will try to put all Flashpackers in the same cabin, along with your guide.
  • The train bathrooms are shared and although showers are available on board, these consist of a toilet with a shower head, so it’s better to wait to freshen up at your hotel upon arrival in Krabi.
  • Please also be aware that Bangkok station is very large and busy. You will be travelling to the station during peak rush hour, which can feel chaotic. You won’t be able to board the train until an hour before departure. Overnight trains are often subject to delays and may stop unexpectedly to let other trains go past.

The jet ski experience will be shared, so two Flashpackers will ride one jet ski taking turns to drive. There will be a full safety briefing and the operator will assess your experience and skills on a jet ski to ensure you enjoy this activity safely and have a great experience.

Are you thinking about travelling to Thailand alone? Why not consider joining one of our small group tours? If you're thinking being led around with someone holding a flag think again! These are modern, immersive and fun adventure holidays giving you an experience you'll never forget!

On average, 50% of those who book with us are solo travellers. Each small group is made up of typically between 8 and 14 people with a mix of gender and age. The average age varies depending upon the particular adventure.

You'll have a guide who will help introduce everybody on day one before you embark on your holiday adventure. Included in the price is the guide, accommodation, often meals and activates as well as any gear, each specific adventure page will provide details.

During the adventure there is plenty of free time and no obligation to spend every minute of every day together. Below are some ideas and some examples of the adventures we have but please browse our website and do get in touch! We have an expert team on hand to help at ay time.

Hassle-free adventures

Our aim is to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible to experience unique trips at the best price, no matter if you travel on your own or as part of a group. You will be able to socialise, meet new people but also have some time to yourself throughout the holiday.

Accommodation made easy

We try to make this part as simple as possible. You will be paired with another traveller of the same sex to share a room during your adventures so you won’t have to pay anything extra. If you prefer your own room you can pay a little extra (we work hard to keep this as little we can) which we can arrange after making your booking, just let us know.

Authentic and affordable trips

We try to work with as many local providers as possible. It means we can offer you the biggest range of adventures and it enables you to see countries in a more unique and authentic way. Plus, we can keep the cost of the trip down by cutting out the middle man!

We work hard with our suppliers to minimize extra costs like single room supplements for solo travellers.

Like-minded travellers

Most trips are guided in small groups, usually made up of between 10 and 15 people. In these groups, half or more will be fellow solo travellers. You get to meet like-minded people who all have the same sense of adventure and thirst for exploring. You'll have a local tour leader to look after all of the group’s needs and logistics and ensure you have the best experience while you are away.

Independent travel

If you like to travel a bit more independently, we have a selection of tours that are self-guided. We will equip you with all the things you may need for your adventure and you can explore at your own pace. Again, we try to keep any single supplements as low as possible by working closely with our local partners.

Adventure Holidays For Singles

If you're single this type of holiday is fantastic, we would say that but they really are. We have loads of trips for different age ranges and interests. The small group adventures offer a social holiday for singles which provide an immediate group (or squad) to explore with. You'll certainly make friends for life.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thailand is a diverse and captivating destination with a wealth of must-see places and things to do. Here are some recommendations for your visit to Thailand:

Explore Bangkok: Start your journey in the bustling capital city of Bangkok. Visit the iconic Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), take a boat tour along the Chao Phraya River, and explore the vibrant street markets like Chatuchak Weekend Market. Don't miss the floating markets, such as Damnoen Saduak, where you can experience the unique market culture on water.

Visit Chiang Mai: Known for its rich cultural heritage, Chiang Mai in northern Thailand offers a more relaxed and traditional atmosphere. Explore the ancient temples, including Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, participate in a traditional Thai cooking class, visit the Elephant Nature Park for an ethical elephant encounter, and experience the famous Yi Peng Lantern Festival if your visit coincides with it.

Discover the Islands: Thailand is famous for its stunning islands and beaches. Head to the southern region and explore the breathtaking Phi Phi Islands, relax on the pristine beaches of Phuket, visit the vibrant nightlife scene in Koh Samui, or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of the Similan Islands. Each island has its own unique charm and offers various activities such as snorkeling, diving, or simply soaking up the sun.

Experience the Ancient Ruins: Venture to Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, to explore the ancient ruins of the former capital cities. Marvel at the historical temples and Buddha statues, rent a bicycle to explore the vast archaeological sites, and gain insight into Thailand's fascinating history and architecture.

Take a Trip to Krabi: Krabi is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, clear turquoise waters, and stunning natural landscapes. Take a boat tour to the famous Phi Phi Islands or explore the hidden gem of the Emerald Pool in the nearby Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve.

Explore the Cultural Triangle: In the northern region, explore the Cultural Triangle, which includes the ancient cities of Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and Lopburi. These sites are renowned for their historical significance, impressive temples, and archaeological wonders that offer a glimpse into Thailand's past.

Experience Thai Cuisine: Thai cuisine is famous worldwide for its vibrant flavors and unique combinations of spices and herbs. Take a Thai cooking class to learn the art of preparing popular dishes such as pad Thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice. Don't forget to savor the street food delicacies found throughout the country, from flavorful satay skewers to savory pad see ew noodles.

Visit the Golden Triangle: Journey to the northernmost region of Thailand, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge. How do I meet everyone in the group?

You'll meet everyone face to face on day one, typically meeting in your accommodation reception or bar at 18:00 but this can differ. The guide will be there too to provide some information and help with everyone getting to know one another.

Will I have my own room?

You can either share with someone of the same gender or if you'd prefer your own room you can select your room and pay a little more during the booking process.

Are there activities every day?

Each adventure will contain a mix of travel, experiences and free time. The idea is not to rush but to enjoy! there is enough that the children will be entertained!

Is the guide with us all the time?

When you're travelling then typically yes and for activities too. During free time the guide will not be with you but is always contactable.

A three-star hotel in Thailand typically provides comfortable and affordable accommodations, suitable for budget-conscious travelers. Here's what you can generally expect when staying at a three-star hotel in Thailand:

Room Comfort: Three-star hotels offer clean and adequately furnished rooms with basic amenities. You can expect a comfortable bed, air conditioning or a fan, a television, and a private bathroom with hot water. Some hotels may provide additional amenities such as a mini-fridge, a safe, or a coffee/tea maker.

Dining Options: Three-star hotels often have a restaurant or a breakfast area where you can enjoy complimentary breakfast or order meals at an additional cost. The dining options may vary from simple buffet-style breakfasts to a limited menu for lunch and dinner.

Facilities and Services: While three-star hotels may not offer extensive facilities, they generally provide essential services to ensure a convenient stay. This may include a reception desk with 24-hour staff, luggage storage, and assistance with travel arrangements or tour bookings. Some hotels may also have a small swimming pool, a fitness center, or a spa, although the amenities may be more modest compared to higher-rated hotels.

Wi-Fi and Connectivity: Most three-star hotels offer complimentary Wi-Fi access in common areas and guest rooms, allowing you to stay connected during your stay. However, the speed and reliability of the internet connection may vary.

Location: Three-star hotels in Thailand can be found in various locations, including city centers, popular tourist areas, and beach resorts. The specific location of the hotel will determine the nearby attractions and amenities accessible to you.

Cleanliness and Maintenance: Three-star hotels generally maintain a standard level of cleanliness and maintenance. However, it's important to note that the overall condition of the hotel, including the rooms and common areas, can vary. Reviews and ratings from previous guests can provide insights into the hotel's cleanliness and maintenance standards.

Customer Service: While three-star hotels may not offer the same level of personalized service as higher-end hotels, the staff are generally friendly and accommodating, ready to assist with any queries or concerns you may have during your stay.

It's important to remember that the facilities and services provided can differ from one three-star hotel to another. It's advisable to read reviews, check the hotel's website, and compare options to find a three-star hotel that meets your specific needs and preferences.

What is the accommodation like?

The accommodation is usually 3 or 4 star. More details are on each trip page or in the brochure. You can always speak to our team who can provide much more information.

Are vegetarian food options available?

Thai cuisine is renowned for its vibrant flavors, aromatic herbs, and fresh ingredients. It offers a diverse range of dishes that cater to various tastes and dietary preferences. Vegetarian options are included within all tours.

Here's an overview of Thai food and vegetarian options in Thailand:

  • Traditional Thai Dishes: Thai cuisine is known for its balance of sweet, sour, spicy, and savory flavors. Some popular traditional dishes include:
  • Pad Thai: Stir-fried rice noodles with eggs, tofu, bean sprouts, and tamarind sauce.
  • Green Curry (Gaeng Keow Wan): A spicy curry made with coconut milk, green chilies, and herbs, usually served with vegetables, tofu, or your choice of protein.
  • Tom Yum Soup: A hot and sour soup with fragrant herbs, lemongrass, lime juice, and either shrimp (Tom Yum Goong) or mushrooms (Tom Yum Hed).
  • Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad): A refreshing salad made with shredded green papaya, tomatoes, lime juice, chili, and peanuts.
  • Massaman Curry: A rich and mild curry with influences from Indian cuisine, typically made with potatoes, peanuts, and your choice of meat or tofu.
  • Vegetarian and Vegan Options: Thailand is generally vegetarian-friendly, especially in tourist areas and major cities. Many Thai dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan by substituting meat or fish sauce with tofu, vegetables, or soy-based alternatives. Additionally, you can find specialized vegetarian and vegan restaurants that offer a wide range of plant-based options. Some popular vegetarian Thai dishes include:
  • Pad Thai Jay: A vegetarian version of the classic Pad Thai, made with tofu, vegetables, and vegetarian sauce.
  • Green Curry with Vegetables: A flavorful curry made with an assortment of vegetables, tofu, or mock meat.
  • Mango Sticky Rice: A popular dessert made with sticky rice, fresh mango slices, and coconut milk.

Street Food: Thailand is renowned for its vibrant street food culture. While many street food stalls offer meat-based dishes, you can still find vegetarian options. Look out for stalls selling fresh fruit, grilled corn, deep-fried tofu, vegetable spring rolls, and stir-fried vegetables.

Fruit and Smoothies: Thailand is abundant in tropical fruits, and they make for a refreshing snack or dessert. Try exotic fruits such as mango, papaya, dragon fruit, rambutan, and durian. You can also find many fruit stalls and smoothie stands offering delicious and nutritious fruit shakes and juices.

When dining out, it's helpful to communicate your dietary requirements to the restaurant staff. Use phrases like "mang sa wirat" for vegetarian or "gin jay" for vegan to convey your preferences. Additionally, be aware that some traditional Thai dishes may contain fish sauce or shrimp paste as a base ingredient, so it's advisable to double-check with the staff or choose dishes that are explicitly labeled as vegetarian.

Overall, Thailand offers a wide array of flavorful and satisfying options for vegetarians and vegans, making it a delightful destination for those with dietary preferences.

Can I talk to someone to find out more?

Of course, we have an expert team on hand to talk to you.

Please contact us if you'd like to find out more by telephoning: UK - 44 0208 004 8886 US - 1 917 472-9385 All - 0333 006 2683 or email us on [email protected] or submit an enquiry on the website and we'll be in touch.

Will we require a Visa?

The visa requirements for Thailand depend on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit. Here are some general guidelines:

Visa-Free Entry: Citizens of many countries are granted visa-free entry into Thailand for a certain period. For example, citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and most European countries are typically allowed to stay in Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa if entering by air, or up to 15 days if entering by land through neighboring countries.

Visa on Arrival: Some nationalities that are not eligible for visa-free entry may obtain a visa on arrival at certain designated points of entry in Thailand. The visa on arrival allows for a stay of up to 15 days and requires the payment of a fee.

Tourist Visa: If you plan to stay in Thailand for more than the allowed visa-free period, you may need to apply for a tourist visa in advance at a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country. The tourist visa typically allows for a stay of up to 60 days and can be extended for an additional 30 days within Thailand.

Visa Exemption for Longer Stays: Citizens of some countries may be eligible for a visa exemption for longer stays, such as the "TR" visa, which allows for a stay of up to 60 days, or the "METV" (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa), which allows for multiple entries with a total stay of up to 6 months within a validity period of 6 or 12 months. These visas usually require application and approval before traveling to Thailand.

It's important to note that visa regulations can change, so it's advisable to check with the nearest Thai embassy or consulate in your country or visit the official website of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements for your specific nationality.

Additionally, upon arrival in Thailand, ensure that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining and that you have a confirmed return or onward ticket.

Visa-free policy ignites China-Thailand travel boom

TAIYUAN, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Just after bidding farewell to a group of Thai teachers visiting universities in Beijing, tour guide Yang Yaoyu rushed to Shanxi Province in north China to greet another group of Thai visitors.

The seasoned Thai-speaking tour guide can attest to a recent surge in enthusiasm among Thai tourists towards China, after a mutual visa exemption agreement between the two countries took effect on March 1.

"Previously, the peak of Thai tourists to China was in April after Songkran festival. However, my schedule is now fully booked from March 3 until the end of April," Yang said.

Porntip Rojansunan, together with the other 20 Thai visitors in her group, is a beneficiary of the visa waiver. After flying directly from Bangkok to Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi, on March 9, the group commenced their five-day trip by visiting three UNESCO World Heritage sites in the province, namely, Mount Wutai, Yungang Grottoes, and the ancient city of Pingyao.

"Before, I was only familiar with Chinese destinations like Beijing and Shanghai. Since coming to Shanxi, I must say how impressed I am by the profound history and rich culture here. I will undoubtedly encourage my friends and relatives to come to experience the charm of Shanxi themselves," Porntip said.

The visa-free policy has boosted cultural exchanges between the Chinese and Thai people, and more and more Thai tourists are considering China as their first choice destination for overseas travel.

Data from China's major online travel agency Trip.com showed that on March 1, the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand increased by more than 30 percent year on year, while travel orders from Thailand to China surged by threefold year on year, an increase of more than 160 percent compared with 2019.

China and Thailand are important tourist destinations and sources for each other, and the implementation of the mutual visa exemption holds significantly positive implications for the growth of the tourism sectors in both nations, said Qin Jing, vice president of Trip.com Group. The Chinese side can provide Thai tourists with more personalized options spanning culture, folk custom, and snow-and-ice activities, among others, Qin added.

China is persistent in its facilitation of entry for foreign nationals, promising to make itself a preferred destination for international travelers. Since the mutual visa exemption policy between China and Thailand came into effect, the number of countries that have such entry policy with China has increased to 23, including Singapore, the Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition, China has adopted a visa-free policy for Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg on a trial basis, starting March 14. This series of measures is regarded by industry insiders as a positive signal that is conducive to promoting global economy and trade and accelerating personnel exchanges.

"The recently concluded sessions of China's top legislature and top political advisory body, or the 'two sessions,' also mentioned that the country will facilitate foreign nationals to work, study, and travel within China. This indicates that the fundamentals of China's unwavering commitment to opening up remain constant," said Zhang Wei, secretary general of the inbound tourism branch of China Association of Travel Services.

"I didn't mean to!": Johnny Somali's cameraman Kick streamer Jino threatens locals in Thailand, apologizes when confronted

K ick streamer Jino, who is also an accomplice of Johnny Somali, has gone viral on social media after he appeared to threaten a group of locals while IRL streaming in Thailand. The one-minute video has garnered a lot of reactions on websites such as X, and it captures the moment when the content creator appears to knock something in a fit of rage before changing up and apologizing when a group of people walked up to him.

All of his initial bravado gone, Jino started defusing the situation instantly. The Kick streamer seemed quite scared and repeatedly offered to pay cash to settle the dispute:

"Yo, yo, chill, chill. I didn't mean to, I didn't mean to, I didn't mean to. I pay, I pay, I pay money. I pay, I pay, I give money."

Watch: Kick streamer Jino gets in trouble with Thai locals

For those who are not aware, Johnny Somali is a highly contentious IRL Kick streamer who recently got deported from Japan after serving jail time for breaking various laws in the country. As his accomplice, Jino also has experience dealing with the police, having been detained by them on stream back in 2023.

Johnny has a reputation for being a nuisance on camera, having started fights with locals on numerous occasions. It appears his cameraman/friend is no different, as Jino seemed to be uttering threats aimed at some of the locals while walking past them in the streets of Thailand:

"I don't care what it is! I want to f**king get your a**. (Kicks something) F**k you."

At this moment, a whole group of people on that side of the street got up and started shouting at him. Seeing that he was outnumbered, the streamer immediately changed his tone and sounded apologetic. In addition, he told them that he would pay money for any damages.

The Thai locals were quite agitated with the way he had acted, and the confrontation almost got physical, with Jino trying to de-escalate. He apologized profusely, telling the men and women that he did not mean to destroy their property:

"No, I pay, wait, wait! I didn't mean to, I didn't mean to destroy property. I am sorry, I am sorry."

A couple of men then told him off, and it appears that the Kick streamer got away physically unscathed. The whole incident has gone viral on social media, with many people drawing parallels to Johnny Somali and his shenanigans.
