5 Battery-Powered Cruise Ships Leading the Zero Emission Charge

J. Souza

A new wave of battery-powered ships has recently emerged that promises to revolutionize cruising and reduce its environmental impact.

In this article, we will explore five different battery-powered cruise ships and companies that are leading the charge in green maritime transportation.

electric cruise ships

Every car company is already making electric cars. Are cruise lines going to start building battery-powered cruise ships next? Or are these floating cities just too large for the “current” battery technology?

Well, don’t look now, but the move toward greener propulsion in cruise ships is already happening, and has been happening for the last several years, at least in its initial stages.

There are already battery-powered tugboats, container ships, and ferries currently operating around the world. Cruise ships require a lot more power, and it’s more challenging to power them with battery power alone, but the ships in this article are making major headway in that direction.

In this article we will look at five different cruise companies that are sailing electric vessels and are at least partially powered by lithium-ion battery systems on board.

The cruise industry is set to undergo a transformation with Norway’s upcoming environmental legislation. Beginning in 2026, ships will be banned from entering select fjords using traditional fuels. This new rule will drive the use of batteries in the industry and some ships are already using battery-powered systems to sail along the coast of Norway.

This video shows how the battery company, Corvus Energy, is allowing even large cruise ships to operate with battery power:

Here are 5 cruise lines already using batteries in their ships, and how it could pave the path forward for parts of the industry:

AIDA Cruises

cruise brothers electrical

AIDA Cruises is using the biggest battery ever placed on a cruise ship of this size . The Carnival Corporation & plc owned cruise line is using a Corvis Energy battery.

The 10 megawatt-hour battery consists of 1,800 modules. Due to it’s size, AIDA had to remove one of the unused water tanks on the ship, AIDAperla , the 125,000 gross ton vessel being powered by electricity.

The installation of the 10,000 kWh lithium-ion battery system was the first to be used on a large cruise ship like this.  AIDAperla carries over 4,000 guests and is 984 feet in length.

At the time of the battery’s installation, the Chief Commercial Officer of Corvis, Halvard Hauso, said, “This will be the world’s biggest battery installation on board a ship to date. The project shows it is possible to retrofit even quite large energy storage solutions on board cruise and passenger ships. It is however challenging to find enough available space as the volume of the batteries is quite substantial. For a new building this is much easier as you can plan it from the design phase.”

And 10 megawatt-hours is just the beginning.

The company expects new builds in the future to see batteries of 50,000 kWh to 100,000 kWh, that’s 100 megawatt-hours of power.

This electric power allows the cruise ship to sail in and out of ports using battery propulsion alone. This makes for smoother sailing and fewer contaminates in the air.

Havila Voyages

Havila Voyages operates four cruise ships along the coast of Norway. Each vessel is powered by some of the largest battery packs at sea and can operate for up to four straight hours on battery power alone . This allows for quiet, smooth sailings into the gorgeous fjords of Norway.

These 6.1 megawatt-hour battery packs (or 6,100 kWh) are supplied by Corvus Energy and weigh about 86 tons.

How are these batteries charged? When on shore Havila uses hydro-power electricity to charge the batteries. When the ships are in open waters and need more power they rely on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) which is used alongside the batteries for a hybrid operation.

The company’s ships carry 680 passengers and were all built in the last few years. Havila Voyages is owned by the Norwegian shipping company Havila Shipping ASA.

Hurtigruten

MS Roald Amundsen hurtigruten

Another cruise line that sails along the coast of Norway is Hurtigruten . In fact, the company sails to all kinds of arctic regions and specializes in expedition style, and destination focused travel.

And besides all that, almost every ship in the fleet is a hybrid vessel with at least 3 being battery-hybrid-powered ships. Over the last several years Hurtigruten has worked to transform even their older ships into battery-powered and LNG powered ships that can sail in and out of Norwegian ports cleanly and silently.

MS Roald Amundsen was the first hybrid ship in the fleet and its debut in 2019 marked the first time this hybrid technology was used on a ship of this size. The ship has two 685 kWh lithium-ion batteries with room for expansion later on.

The 500-passenger ship can run on battery power for about 45 minutes to an hour.

The batteries are also used for what is called “peak shaving”. The goal of peak shaving is to reduce the need for the ship’s main power generation systems to work at full capacity during periods of high demand, thereby reducing wear and tear on the system and potentially reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

cruise brothers electrical

Viking Cruises is world-renowned for their Viking Longships, which sail along the rivers of Europe and throughout the world.  And now some of these vessels offer a hybrid propulsion system that uses battery power in combination with diesel fuel.

The large-capacity battery packs on ships like Viking Egdir, Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Radgrid and Viking Gymir are charged in port and also by roof-mounted solar panels.

The batteries on these ships have a capacity of 745 kWh.

These vessels are also equipped with the ability to connect to shore power when in port to reduce reliance on fuel.

The company also recently reported testing out hydrogen fuel cells on one of its ocean ships in a step towards reducing the reliance on traditional fuels.

The Yangtze River Three Gorges 1

And then there’s the vessel made in China that has been touted as the “worlds largest electric cruise ship”.

The Yangtze River Three Gorges 1 is not a hybrid. It is 100% powered by a 7,500 kWh battery system.

The 300-foot long ship is not really a cruise ship but is designed as a sightseeing vessel along the Yangtze River in China.

The $23 million ship debuted in early 2022 and is able to carry over 1,000 passengers. The downside is it can only travel for about 62 miles on one charge.

Final Thoughts

Battery-powered cruise ships are an eco-friendly innovation with some attractive benefits. They emit zero pollutants, making them ideal for sensitive areas like coastal waters. They’re also quieter, offering a more enjoyable experience for passengers and crew. Cost-wise, they’re cheaper to run since they don’t need fuel, potentially leading to lower fares and higher profits.

However, building battery-powered cruise ships is more expensive due to evolving battery tech. They also have limited range, unsuitable for long-haul journeys. Charging them can be time-consuming, affecting their flexibility.

Some battery tech advancements are needed to make this a more meaningful power source for the larger cruise ships of today, but even what’s being done now with battery power would have been impossible even 10 years ago.

UK new car sales reach highest February figure in 20 years

Purchases of electrical vehicles for commercial fleets power 14% year-on-year rise in 19th month of growth

New car sales in the UK surged to the highest February figure in 20 years, boosted by companies buying electric vehicles for their fleets, even as private uptake of EVs declined.

Registrations of new cars climbed 14% year-on-year to 84,886 vehicles last month, the best February performance since 2004, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

It was the 19th consecutive month of growth, mainly driven by company fleets investing in the latest vehicles. February is traditionally volatile, as the lowest-volume month of the year, with buyers often choosing to wait until March and the new number plate.

Electrified vehicles recorded robust growth, with sales of hybrid electric vehicles rising 12.1% but taking a slightly smaller market share of 12.7%. Plug-in hybrids posted the largest growth for the month, rising 29.1% to reach 7.2% of the market. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) also outpaced the rest of the market, rising 21.8% to account for 17.7% of registrations.

The SMMT said the long-term picture would become clearer in March, the busiest month for car sales.

The increase in EV uptake is entirely driven by fleets, owing to fiscal incentives, while private buyers have accounted for less than a fifth (18.2%) of new BEVs sold so far this year.

Many consumers worry about the cost of electric vehicles, the longevity of their batteries and the availability of charging points . A House of Lords committee last month called on ministers to intervene to boost the secondhand EV market and allay “uncertainty and concerns” over the health of the vehicles’ batteries. Peers on the environment and climate change committee urged the government to step up efforts to encourage EV adoption.

The SMMT said a faster transition depended on more private buyers switching but that the lack of significant incentives was holding many back. It added that Wednesday’s budget was an opportunity for the chancellor to stimulate demand by halving VAT on new EVs for three years, amending proposed vehicle excise duty changes, and reducing VAT on public charging in line with home charging.

While consumers do not pay VAT on other emission-reduction technologies such as heat pumps and solar panels, private EV buyers pay the full 20% levied on all cars, whether they are electric, petrol or diesel. Halving VAT on new EV purchases would save the average buyer about £4,000 on the upfront purchase price but cost the Treasury less than the plug-in car grant that was scrapped in 2022, the SMMT argued.

after newsletter promotion

Moreover, upcoming changes to vehicle excise duty next year would lead to the majority of buyers of battery-powered electric vehicles being effectively penalised by £1,950 for going electric because of the “expensive car” supplement.

Those unable to charge a BEV at home pay a “pavement penalty” of 20% VAT on public charging – quadruple the rate paid by those with the opportunity to charge at home.

Mike Hawes, the SMMT chief executive, said: “The new car market’s ability to deliver growth continues with its best February for 20 years and this week’s budget is an opportunity to ensure that growth is greener.

“Tackling the triple tax barrier as the market embarks on its busiest month of the year would boost EV demand, cutting carbon emissions and energising the economy. It will deliver a faster and fairer zero-emission transition, putting Britain’s EV ambition back in the fast lane.”

Screen Rant

Tom cruise films action scene in set photos from new movie (is it mission: impossible 8).

New footage and set photos of Tom Cruise filming action scenes surface, raising speculation as to whether the actor is filming Mission: Impossible 8.

Major Mission Impossible 8 Story Detail Has Already Been Spoiled In An Unexpected Way

  • Based on set photos, Tom Cruise is seen filming an action movie in Derbyshire.
  • Speculation suggests Cruise may be filming Mission: Impossible 8, with costars also posting get-togethers and scenery images.
  • Cruise will be especially busy in the coming months due to a recent deal with Warner Bros.

Tom Cruise is seen filming action scenes for an upcoming movie, which is speculated to be Mission: Impossible 8 . Cruise has been busy in the past couple of years with movies from multiple big franchises. This included last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and the 2022 blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick . Cruise's next project is the eighth Mission: Impossible installment, which seems to be already underway.

According to multiple news outlets, including BBC and ITV , Cruise has been spotted filming an action scene for an upcoming movie. The videos included footage of Cruise in Derbyshire, filming in what appears to be a beaten-up, dirt-covered Jeep. Aerial footage shows trailers and other evidence of a film set. There were vehicles spotted in the Middleton Mine as well.

While the images did not confirm what film Cruise is working on, two posts from former castmates suggest that Cruise may be filming Mission: Impossible 8 . This included the above post from Simon Pegg , who posted a selfie with costars Haley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Tarzan Davis and said, “ Saving the world has never been so much fun .” Pegg’s selfie post did not include any images of Cruise.

Atwell , who debuted as Grace in Dead Reckoning , also indicated that she might be filming a movie, offering a post from her “ day off .” As in the case of Pegg, Atwell did not explicitly indicate that she was involved in filming for Mission: Impossible 8 . The scenery in the video also seems to be the Peak District, where part of its landscape is located in Derbyshire.

Tom Cruise Needs To Complete Mission: Impossible 8 Despite The Warner Bros. Deal

However, Atwell and Pegg's posts give strong evidence that Cruise is filming Mission: Impossible 8 , especially since the movie has a 2025 deadline to accomplish.

Despite the underwhelming box office for Dead Reckoning last summer, it doesn't seem to have deterred the developments for the next Mission: Impossible movie. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning ended with Cruise's Ethan Hunt getting hold of both keys after he and Gabriel (Esai Morales) battled each other to get hold of them. The eighth movie will focus on Ethan and his team looking for the lost Sevastopol as they attempt to stop the AI program Entity for good.

While Atwell, Pegg, Klementief, and Ving Rhames (Luther) are expected to return, Mission: Impossible 8 will be without one cast member, Rebecca Ferguson. This comes after her character, Ilsa, was killed by Gabriel during the events of Dead Reckoning , causing Ethan to lose a crucial team member. While there have been theories about a potential Ilsa return, such as a fake death, Ferguson has been doubtful of a future reprisal.

Mission: Impossible - Every Movie In Chronological Order

As speculation fuels, Cruise will be busy in the coming months due to a deal with Warner Bros. It was announced earlier this year that Warner Bros. and Cruise were pairing up to develop and produce films together, including original and franchise films. Therefore, it is uncertain if the movie Cruise is filming is Mission: Impossible 8 - which is distributed by Paramount Pictures - or a project under Warner Bros. However, Atwell and Pegg's posts give strong evidence that Cruise is filming Mission: Impossible 8 , especially since the movie has a 2025 deadline to accomplish.

The release date for Mission: Impossible 8 is currently slated for May 23, 2025.

Mission: Impossible 8

Mission: Impossible 8 is the direct sequel to Dead Reckoning - Part One and is the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Said to be the final film, Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and more will reprise their roles in Ethan Hunt's IMF team as they face off against a dangerous foe from their past.

I am a home based travel agent and Cruise Brothers is my host agency. I have been an agent for almost a year. I chose this agency because it did not cost anything--free, nada, zip--total no brainer. I wanted to give the travel industry a try and I was unsure of my travel sales abilities and other places were charging ALOT of $$--seemed rather foolish to spend money on something I was not sure was going to render and financial returns. The team manager I work under always has an answer--even if that means having to go to someone else to get me an answer. There are a lot of educational trainings with various vendors provided and they are offered day and evenings. I have taken full advantage of all the opportunities I can..and aside from the knowledge they provide...often there are nice perks for learning. I have booked three personal cruises with Cruise Brothers and I think it is really cool to get paid to go on vacation. Also it was really nice to find some perks in my cabin on my last cruise. Because of the large volume of cruise sales, 99% of the time I get the cheapest rate for myself and my clients. The commission is fair and sometimes there are agency specific, special perks available..just cause you are connected with Cruise Brothers. I have not generated a lot of sales yet. However, they have not given up on me and have encouraged me not to give up on myself. I suspect that other places would not be so patient while I develop my client base and start generating more sales.

2nd time using cruise brothers and Scott has been great both times. HOWEVER, Our Boston to Bermuda cruise on the Norwegian Dawn that left Boston on 9/7 was rerouted to another destination because of hurricane Florence. Where was it headed now???.... Maine and Canada. That's right from Bermuda with temps in the 80's to Maine/Canada with temps in the 50's. When did we find this out??... 8:30 that same morning. What is NCL doing about it?? Nothing as of now. No refund, no partial refund, no on board credit, no future credit. How can they think that Bermuda and Maine are comparable trips?!?! AND there was a ship with available rooms leaving New York Sunday morning that was supposed to go to Bermuda but is instead going to the Bahamas. I asked if I could transfer my reservation and board that ship and they said no. They instructed me to contact my travel agency (CRUISE BROTHERS) No luck there either. I will never step foot on another Norwegian ship.

I love working for this company. One of the first things I like is that is owned by a family. I did not want to work for a huge corporation or a franchise. They also have a lot of training. The team leaders are great. It does have a feel of working for a family and this is important to me. You can make as much money as you want or as little it depends on you. For me, this is how i make my living and something i love to do!. I don't feel like i am working ever!! I hope to grow my sales, and stay with the company for as long as I can. If you by any reason encounter a team leader that is not helpful call the sales manager directly. He is always available to help you and you can also request to be switched to another team leader and make sure they know the reason why you want to switch. Take the initiative to Read on as much as you can about the travel industry Network, network. Build up your clientele.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

Tom Cruise Joaquin Phoenix

In January, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy jetted to London to connect with the new crown jewel of the studio, Tom Cruise . The three met to identify a film that would kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership.” Sources say a raft of possibilities were discussed, including an “Edge of Tomorrow” follow-up and Quentin Tarantino ’s “The Movie Critic,” which currently isn’t set up with a distributor and has Warner Bros., like every major studio, salivating.

In Tarantino, Cruise could find the rare auteur who marries box office performance and awards-season heat. However, securing the project won’t come cheap. The biggest roadblock for De Luca and Abdy is potentially Sony. Sources say Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has the edge, having distributed Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

Still, a Cruise-Tarantino alliance at Warners would align with the De Luca-Abdy modus operandi: Lure A-list directors who can attract bona fide stars — and spend wildly. Since taking over the studio in July 2022, De Luca and Abdy have struck some pricey deals: There’s Anderson’s next movie, which will feature Leonardo DiCaprio (earning $20 million plus), and a Ryan Coogler-Michael B. Jordan vampire film that has Warners ceding the copyright to Coogler after 25 years. The latter move was a head-scratcher considering that Tarantino is the only other director to secure an eventual copyright from a major studio (with “Once Upon a Time”) and will surely be looking to replicate that with “Movie Critic.” But sources who have done recent business with the studio say the mandate to spare no expense to land big talent comes via Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

That time may be approaching. In April, Warner Bros. Discovery can entertain offers to buy, sell or merge with a studio like NBCUniversal, as many on the lot believe will happen. That’s when the two-year lock-up period expires as part of the 2022 deal that united WarnerMedia and Discovery. All of the recent moves, from a first-look pact with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap to the quest to land Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” follow-up are akin to painting a house before it hits the market.

And this is one splashy renovation. The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.

Some argue that spending big is essential when releasing movies in theaters.

“There’s only so much top talent in Hollywood, and it’s very competitive and stretched thin because a lot of talent have deals in streaming,” says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “If theatrical is going to work, you need the A-lister like Tom and Leo, and Warner Bros. is spending what they need to spend to keep this talent.”

But executives across town believe Warners’ math sometimes doesn’t add up, with the studio decried as fiscally irresponsible. The Anderson film, for instance, was greenlit with a $115 million budget, according to sources. Underscoring the gamble, none of the director’s movies has crossed $80 million at the box office. His latest, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” made $33 million worldwide. Even with Cruise’s star power, “Magnolia” only mustered $48.5 million. (It was De Luca, then a New Line exec, who convinced Cruise to play “Magnolia’s” misogynistic self-help guru.) The pair are said to be less pumped about another auteur’s latest: Bong Joon Ho ’s “Mickey 17.” In January, Warner Bros. pulled the $150 million Robert Pattinson sci-fi starrer from its schedule and then moved it to 2025. A Warner rep insists: “There is, of course, enthusiasm for it.”

Other projects that De Luca and Abdy prioritized are perplexing executives at rival studios. Warners picked up Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein film, which is set in the 1930s and stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. It was a project that Netflix deemed too risky and passed on before Warners salvaged it. (A Warners source says Netflix didn’t want to make it on the timeline Gyllenhaal proposed.)

Despite the pressure to acquiesce to demands from top talent, De Luca and Abdy can still say no.

Meet the birth family of Tom Cruise; one of Hollywood’s most celebrated

cruise brothers electrical

Tom Cruise remains one of the best things to have happened to Hollywood till date; he was even ranked as the world’s most powerful celebrity in 2006. The actor and filmmaker started out in 1981 with Endless Love and since then continued to star in a good number of critically and commercially successful films.

Date of Birth: July 3, 1962

Zodiac Sign: Cancer

No one would have thought that the deeply religious Cruise will end up as the award-winning Jerry Maguire (1996) cast. He struggled with dyslexia as a kid and this made academic success really difficult. He was an athletic champion and even considered a career in professional wrestling before a knee injury made him changed his mind.

Tom Cruise went as far as enrolling in a Franciscan seminary because he had always dreamt of becoming a priest. He quit after a year then gradually started discovering his love for the stage and a career was born. Read on as we bring juicy details concerning the birth family of the Magnolia (1999) actor.

Tom Cruise's family - mother Mary Lee Pfeiffer

Date of Birth: September 22, 1936

Date of Death: February 2017 (aged 80)

Zodiac Sign: Virgo

Mary was not lucky with her first marriage as her husband was a “bully” and this made her work extra hard to hold her home together. In 1974, Tom’s mother left his dad and went on to remarry a man called John ‘Jack’ South in 1978. They raised her children together until 2012 when they got divorced. John later passed away in 2015 after a battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

It was evident that the former special education teacher was close to her legendary son as she was seen at the premieres of most of his movies; the proud mother has on several occasions been referred to as the rock in her son’s life. She died in her sleep February 2017 after battling a long illness.

Date of Birth:  1926

Date of Death: July 25, 2015 (aged 89)

Thomas Mapother III (father)

Date of Birth: October 15, 1934

Date of Death: January 9, 1984 (aged 49)

Zodiac Sign: Libra

Thomas was an electrical engineer but mostly known as the abusive father who is referred to as a “merchant of chaos” by the famous Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible (1996 – present) movie series. What he had with his children can’t really be called a relationship and things remained that way till he died in 1984 from cancer.

Lee Ann DeVette (nee Mapother) (elder sister from same parents)

Date of Birth: July 24, 1959

Zodiac Sign: Leo

Lee Ann is the oldest Mapother child and like their mother, she is also a devout Scientologist. In 2004, she worked as her brother’s publicist and has been involved in his production company ever since. Mapother was married to Stephen Burnett.

Cass Mapother (elder sister from same parents)

Year of Birth: 1961

Cass is another sister to the Mapother siblings and she bears, like the rest of her sisters a striking resemblance to the Hollywood star. She is an owner of a restaurant Cass’ Cafe in New Jersey.

Marian Henry (nee Mapother) (younger sister from same parents)

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
