Shedd Aquarium Takes Students Behind The Scenes With New Virtual Field Trips

Do Something Awesome; Share With A Friend Who May Benefit

Immersive Learning Program Takes Aquatic Science to Classrooms for an Online Experience with Shedd Experts and Animals.

Shedd Aquarium Virtual Field Trips

Shedd Aquarium , a national leader and industry resource for science education and immersive learning, connects curious minds of students in classrooms across the country with aquarium animals and experts through a new virtual field trip program, Live From Behind the Scenes. The interactive session invites students to experience a side of the aquarium they wouldn’t see during an on-site field trip, offering rare looks at Shedd’s animal hospital, shark and penguin habitats.

“Our learning experts at Shedd are continually seeking to support science education in the classroom through engaging, integrated experiences and Live From Behind the Scenes does that by connecting students with our animals and experts in a way that no other program does,” said Dr. Joy Kubarek , vice president of learning. “Education is at the core of the aquarium and we’re constantly keeping a pulse on how students interpret and understand science. This virtual program takes the educational experience of a field trip to Shedd beyond the physical walls of the aquarium – inviting teachers to transform lessons on the pages of textbooks to the real world, while creating a meaningful experience for the students to help them understand and appreciate nature.”

Live From Behind the Scenes is the latest installment in a suite of informal science education programming created by Shedd Learning that centers on digital, Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), Next Generation Science Standards and personalized learning.

Available to schools across the country, the interactive program features three live, 50-minute video encounters through Web-based software. During the encounters Shedd trainers, veterinarians and animals make a virtual visit to classrooms for the interactive experience. Each of the available three sessions is unique and happens in real time as Shedd’s experts do their daily work — with the students alongside them.

The Shedd Aquarium Virtual Field Trip Options Include:

Animal Health at Shedd

During this virtual session, classrooms have the opportunity to join Shedd veterinarians during a routine animal examination in the aquarium’s state-of-the-art animal hospital . Students observe alongside Shedd’s veterinary staff as they interpret X-rays, vital signs and behavior to assess the health of an animal.

Penguins at Shedd

Students learn how Shedd provides an enriching habitat for Magellanic and Rockhopper penguins by virtually joining trainers inside the penguin habitat to observe the animals up-close and learn some of the ways they care for the birds. As part of the session, students are also given a creative challenge that demonstrates what they learned about the penguins.

Sharks at Shedd

Animal care experts dispel common myths about sharks and show students how they feed and care for the sharks in the popular Wild Reef exhibit. Students design an identifiable tag for different shark species and calculate how much food Shedd’s sandbar sharks eat.

Not only do the sessions provide students a rare view behind the scenes at Shedd, but they have the opportunity to ask Shedd experts questions about the animals, their habitats and what it takes to have a career in science.

With tailored content for students in third through fifth grade and sixth through eighth grade, Live From Behind the Scenes welcomes three classrooms of up to 35 students to participate in each session. In advance of the session, Shedd learning specialists work with teachers to test technical resources and ensure the classroom is ready for the virtual visit. Shedd provides teachers with materials designed to sharpen students’ critical thinking, science and math skills through in-class activities conducted during the session.

“Bringing environmental science to life and actively engaging inquisitive minds through applied learning is at the heart of Shedd,” said Shedd President and CEO Ted Beattie. “From afterschool programs and habitat restoration to workshops and animal encounters, Shedd has sought to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Live From Behind the Scenes represents the next phase in the aquarium’s education journey, creating meaningful memories for students through activities such as watching a Shedd trainer perform a checkup on a penguin or calculating how much food a sandbar shark eats.”

Other programs Shedd offers include the Teen Learning Lab , an innovative space designed to provide students with a free collaborative space to explore environmental interests and conduct scientific research; and ROV clubs that provide teachers with materials to help students build their own underwater robots.

For more information on the program and to learn how teachers can sign up, visit the Learning page on Shedd’s website or follow along on Twitter at @SheddLearning .

Shedd Aquarium is supported by the people of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the Chicago Park District. Shedd Aquarium is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA)

HELPFUL LESSON PLAN(S)

Prepared by fieldtripdirectory.com.

Aquarium Lesson Plan

• Did you know a sea cucumber can shoot its intestines at predators, and then regrow them, in order to avoid being eaten?

• An electric eel can produce 500 watts of electricity (that’s enough to light up 10 light bulbs) to frighten away predators.

• Dolphins sleep with one half of the brain and one eye open to watch for danger.

• No matter how many pieces you cut a sea sponge into each piece will continue living and growing.

• Ocean life can do amazing things to survive. As you visit an aquarium with your students, note the different ways animals defend themselves. Just like a squid, people wouldn’t bother you either if you squirted black ink in their face!

Dive Into the Chicago Shedd Aquarium: Insider Secrets You Need to Know

Thinking of visiting the renowned Shedd Aquarium in Chicago? As one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world, the aquarium has fascinating marine life exhibits, entertaining live shows, and fun activities for visitors of all ages.

I recently visited to see the Shedd Aquarium Beluga whales and had an amazing time. In this post, I share all the essentials, plus helpful tips and highlights.

Table of Contents

Things to do at the Shedd Aquarium

Abbot oceanarium.

Of all the Shedd Aquarium exhibits, one of the most popular is the Animal Spotlight Show.

The shows are held daily but the featured animal is not announced in advance. But don’t worry, the shows at the oceanarium are always amazing so you are in for a treat.

Aquatic presentations include sea lions, dolphins, penguins, or the Beluga whales. For an additional fee, you can enhance your aquarium experiences in an exciting up-close adventure with the water life, like sea lions, sea otters, penguins, and beluga whales.

The shows are held daily at 11:30 AM and they continue every hour until the last show at 3:30 PM. The show is approximately 10 minutes long.

For the animal spotlight shows in the Abbot Oceanarium, be camera-ready before the start at the end of the show before the curtains are raised. There is always a spectacle that is photo-worthy!

4D Theater Experience

coral and marine life

The 4D Experience Theater provides an immersive movie adventure with special effects.

In this experience, you choose a show that focuses on specific animals – playful penguins, thrilling sharks, or mesmerizing octopus. These educational shows allow you to learn more about these fascinating aquatic creatures.

Entry is located across the corridor from the Animal Spotlight show so if you plan it well, you can go from one experience to the next.

  • The Penguin show begins at 11 AM and continues every hour until the last show at 5 PM.
  • The Shark experience starts at 11:40 AM and continues every hour until the last show at 4:40 PM.
  • The Octopus show starts at 11:20 AM and continues every hour until the last show at 5:20 PM.

Cost: Tickets are about $5 per person.

sharks in aquarium

This exhibit is massive and home to thousands of exotic aquatic species including sharks, stingrays, and brightly colored schooling fish. Visitors can enjoy views from the tunnel along with diverse coral reef habitat.

Virtual Reality

For an additional charge, you can virtually get up close with amazing animals like sharks, manta rays, or humpback whales through unique Shed Aquarium animal experiences.

Don’t miss out on the chance to swim with sharks or be eye-to-eye with a gentle giant whale!

Cost: $9 per person (1 show), $15 per person (2 shows), $20 (3 shows). Discounts for these experiences are available for members and CityPass holders.

Touch Experiences

starfish

The aquarium has touch experiences that allow visitors to gently interact with certain aquatic animals like stingrays and starfish.

Everything is under staff supervision and hand washing stations for sanitation are available.

Polar Play Zone

kids playing with marine life

The Polar Play Zone offers an Arctic-inspired play area for kids. The play in imaginary and tactile that invites kids to look for details and feel the environment of the marine life.

Amazon Rising

The Amazon Rising exhibit walks you through the seasons to see the rise and fall of the Amazon River. Here you will see multiple species of fish, an impressive display of freshwater stingrays, birdlife that can be found on the shorelines, a rainforest, a muddy forest, eels, anaconda, river turtles, and animals that live on dry land.

Caribbean Reef

When I visited, this exhibit was under construction and inaccessible. The Chicago Aquarium plans to complete a reimagined work for the Caribbean Reef and begin unveiling new designs in the summer of 2024.

The roll out of the new plans will continue through 2026. I can’t wait to see all the enhancements to the exhibits, galleries, and atrium!

Underwater Gallery

people looking at underwater life exhibit

The underwater galleries are my favorite spots to visit at the aquarium. I feel as though I’ve entered an aquatic world that is serene and beautiful. My eyes are drawn to the hues of blues and greens and the unfamiliar schools of fish that swim in patterns.

No matter where you look, new life drifts through this underwater oasis.

display of tshirts and other merchandise

Don’t forget to stop by the Shedd store during your visit. Located on the main level, the store has a great selection of t-shirts, sweatshirts, stuffed animals, and other fun souvenirs.

They sell a collection of sustainable items like reusable water bottles to remember your amazing day.

When the weather is nice, you can enjoy the outdoors more with seating on the Lakefront Terrace.

There are two onsite dining options at the aquarium. The Bubble Net Food Court is a cafe that serves grilled specialties and to-go items. I loved sitting in this food court for the great views of the city and Lake Michigan.

The Sounding’s Cafe is a nice coffee shop where you can get drinks and items to-go. There are also nice views from this dining area.

I went to the museum on a Sunday and arrived around 10:00 AM. There was no waiting, and the exhibits were not crowded. By lunchtime, the foot traffic picked up momentum, but I had already seen most of everything.

A visit to this aquarium in Chicago promises a fun, educational, and memorable experience.

Don’t miss the chance to see thousands of aquatic animals and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of water when visiting. It is one of many unique Chicago gem s.

While traveling in Chicago, my son and I visited the aquarium, he had a little doubt before, but in the end we had a great time! The aquarium was crowded and the waiter told us there were a lot of tourists here every day. Wow! We could watch the exhibitions as well and the exhibits were really great! There are lots of animals of all kinds, don’t miss the giant pythons in the front area! Because the people here are wearing a few layers of clothes, a bit stuffy. Although the four-dimensional movie is a bit short, it’s wonderful and fun. Play it!

Shed Aquarium is very suitable for parent-child tours. Moby whales, dolphins, otters are so cute. You can also see that penguins are so clumsy on land and very flexible underwater. When buying tickets, you can buy items including water performances, because water performances are very worth watching. There are many kinds of animals, which are very good in the aquarium. It's very interesting to have staff latent to say at regular intervals. It is suggested that the tour time should be 1 to 2 hours.
