I don’t know about you, but for me, one of my biggest concerns when hitting the road is whether I’ll be able to bring my beagle Ralph with me. Pet-friendly hotels can be easy enough to track down, but what about activities that the hound and I can enjoy together. Here’s a pretty varied list of things to do in Michigan, from restaurants, bars, dog parks, campsites, even shopping at the mall – all pet-friendly.

If you are planning a dog friendly vacation to the Great Lakes State, you’ve come to the right place. In this guide I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan a successful Michigan dog friendly vacation!

pick your destination

Explore the city:.

To explore Michigan’s big cities with your dog, you’ll obviously want to check out Detroit. Detroit has been experiencing a major comeback and can be a delight to explore in terms of architecture, culture, and food. Dogs are not allowed in museums, but you’ll still find plenty of things to do in Detroit if you skip the museums.

Grand Rapids would be the next big city to explore. Not as big as Detroit, but known to be very pet friendly. I have not been yet with Kirby, but from what I’ve researched, you’ll find plenty of dog friendly patios, parks, and activities to do.

IF YOU LOVE THE OUTDOORS:

Michigan is filled with beautiful hikes for you and your dog to enjoy. Visiting the UP would be perfect for an epic wilderness adventure.

In the mood for a challenge? Check out the initiative to connect Michigan trails to make a hiking and biking route called the Iron Belle, that goes from Belle Isle in Detroit all the way to Iron Mountain the Upper Peninsula!

Generally speaking, all state park campgrounds allow dogs as well and there are plenty of state parks to stay in.

FOR A VACATION ON THE WATER

If you haven’t been to Michigan before, I would highly suggest Mackinac Island for a perfect pet friendly getaway on the water. No cars are allowed on the island, so you’ll only share the roads with other dogs, people, and horses.

Traverse City “the cherry capitol of the world” would be the best place to spend a weekend if you are looking for a combination of a city and beach getaway. It’s a personal favorite of mine, and there is no shortage of dog friendly things to do there.

TRIP ADVICE

DOG FRIENDLY TRAVEL TIPS

Make sure your dog is up for it.

Not all dogs are meant to travel. If you have a puppy, an untrained dog, or a highly anxious dog, traveling may not be for them. It could be once they’ve had enough training and you feel confident that you can control them in any scenario that occurs. Until then, get to know your dog more and make travel a goal to aim for.

BE PREPARED:

What do you do when it rains? What if you want to visit museums?

Traveling with a dog is no easy feat. so it’s best to understand when you should and shouldn’t travel with your dog. If you are going to Washington DC to visit the Museum Mile, you probably shouldn’t bring your dog with you.

You also need to have a pretty relaxed mindset in what you will be able to do. There will be times when the restaurant you have picked out doesn’t have any more patio space and you’ll have to go somewhere else.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

On a personal note, this blog was born to help encourage others to bring their pups on vacation. I’ve loved bringing along our mini Goldendoodle, Kirby, with us on our adventures. He’s had a ton of fun in all sorts of places. I’ve also noticed you engage more with strangers when you have a dog with you (especially if that dog is wearing shoes). It is a little extra work, but it is so rewarding having your best friend there, having a blast next to you.

Visiting Mackinac Island with your dogs is the perfect summer vacation. With Victorian charm, rich history, gorgeous beaches, and miles of trails, you’ll all enjoy the pure Michigan magic!

Embarking on a ferry across the Straights of Mackinac toward Mackinac Island is like hopping aboard a time machine for a trip into the past.

Though the ride only lasts about 20 minutes, the ship transports you to a different era. Horse-drawn carriages ramble down the streets, people walk or ride bikes, and the natural beauty that has drawn visitors to this place since prehistoric times is still intact.

Cars Aren’t Allowed On Mackinac Island

If you’ve heard anything about Mackinac Island, it’s probably that cars are prohibited. When the first “horseless carriage” was delivered here in 1898, the noisy contraption scared the horses and threatened the islanders’ peace and quiet. So the village council quickly decided to ban the automobile – a simple but decisive act that changed history. And made Mackinac a wonderful place to explore with your dogs!

The absence of automobiles doesn’t mean you’ll have difficulty navigating the island. The ferry docks are just steps from Main Street, where the shops, restaurants, and souvenir stores could keep you busy for days. And many of Mackinac’s most popular sites are within easy walking distance – Fort Mackinac, the Grand Hotel, the cottages on the East and West Bluffs, and Arch Rock are all within a mile of the Visitor’s Center.

For those interested in seeing more of the island, consider a horse-drawn taxi, or guided carriage tour . (Well behaved, leashed pets are welcome aboard, as long as there is no barking at the horses.)

Or opt for the “drive yourself” carriage or “ride yourself” saddle horses for an even more authentic (and perhaps more exciting) experience!

If you’re not feeling quite that adventurous, there are several bike liveries where you can rent two- or three-wheeled bikes, as well as trailers for kids and pets.

Taking A Pet Friendly Ferry To Mackinac Island

Both ferry operators serving Mackinac Island are happy to see your furry family members and welcome them aboard, free of charge. The ride takes between 15 and 20 minutes, and the adult fare is $32 round trip. Day-trippers can park their car for free in designated ferry lots in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. And the ferry companies also offer a range of parking options for guests staying on the island overnight.

Ty and Buster were so excited to get going on our trip that we were first in line for the ferry!

The ferries deliver you right into the heart of town, docking a short walk from Main Street. From there you can check out the shops, stop in the Visitor Center for tips and information, sign up for a carriage tour, rent a bike, or walk to Fort Mackinac, the Grand Hotel, the cottages on the East and West Bluffs, or Arch Rock.

Pets On Mackinac Island

Leashed pets are welcome to explore most of Mackinac Island with you! Keep your eyes peeled for dog-friendly stickers in the windows of many shops and restaurants. And, if you don’t see a sticker, please ask if your dog is allowed before entering.

Pets are also welcome at Fort Mackinac, in the parks, and on all the roads and trails in Mackinac Island State Park, which covers more than 80% of the island.

For those renting bikes, pet trailers are generally available at the island’s many bike liveries. Even the horse-drawn taxi service and carriage tours are pet friendly! Small pets that sit on your lap ride for free, while larger pets are charged a child’s fare.

Your dog is also welcome to join you on a kayak or paddle board excursion from the island, as long as he brings his own doggy life vest.

What Should You Do On Mackinac Island With Dogs?

Perhaps the most difficult part of visiting Mackinac Island with your dogs is deciding what to do first! We have some suggestions to help get you started:

Fort Mackinac

For the history buffs, Fort Mackinac might be the place to start. Moved from the mainland to the island between 1779 and 1781, interpreters are happy to share the history of the fort and the island, from its beginning as a French fur trading hub, the transformation to commercial fishing, and finally as a summer vacation destination.

The cannon at the fort is regularly “fired over the harbor” as part of the demonstrations, so if your dog is sensitive to loud noises, be sure to ask about the firing schedule.

Below the fort is a large green space that once served as the soldiers’ garden. Now it’s a park named for Father Jacques Marquette, who brought a band of Huron Indians to the island in 1671, after they were driven out of southern Ontario by Iroquois warriors.

It turned out the soil on Mackinac was too thin to sustain the Huron’s crops, and the settlement was moved near what is now St. Ignace after a year. But a statue of Father Marquette still stands there. Having graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, which is also named for this Jesuit priest, I found this historical tidbit particularly interesting!

Mackinac Island State Park

In 1875, the U.S. Congress established Mackinac National Park – America’s second national park after Yellowstone. Twenty years later, when troops were being moved out of Fort Mackinac for good, the fort and the national park were transferred to the state of Michigan.

Now the state park covers more than 80 percent of the island, protecting the 19th-century atmosphere, as well as the unique limestone formations, caves, and vistas of Lakes Huron and Michigan.

There are multiple routes and miles of trails through the park, and if you or your pet prefer to avoid crowds, this is a great place to start. Most people hang around town after getting off the ferry, so hitting the trails allows you to leave them behind.

Buster loves nothing more than a long walk, and Ty’s happy to ride in his stroller for hours, so we opted to follow Hwy 185 for the 8.2-mile lap around the island’s shore. After a short detour on the Shoreline Trail to appreciate the Mission Point Resort – o n e of the island’s pet friendly hotels – we got hopping on our trip around the island.

With stops for picture taking and to enjoy the views along the way, we spent about four hours circumnavigating Mackinac. It was a nice, level walk and, of course, there was no car traffic!

The scenery, the crystal blue water, and the rocky beaches are a wonderful payoff for your efforts. And we didn’t see any carriages on this road, so their routes might not get you the same views.

Our tip if you’re considering the loop – either on bike or foot – is to travel the island in a clockwise direction. The visitor guide recommends traveling counter-clockwise, so nearly everyone does that … including us! If you go clockwise (come off the ferry and turn left on Main Street), your side of the road will be less congested with fewer bikers peddling by.

As you’re walking along captivated by the lake and beach, don’t forget to look up to see the famous Arch Rock!

British Landing, which is roughly on the opposite side of the island from town, is a nice place to stop for a snack. And perhaps a splash in the lake, if you’re so inclined!

Pet Friendly Places To Eat

As the afternoon passed, foot and bike traffic on the road lightened. By the time we got back to town, things had quieted down quite a bit.

Michigan's Top Pet Friendly Attraction: Mackinac Island | GoPetFriendly.com

We considered getting a snack from the adorable Windermere Doghouse and enjoying the views from Windermere Point. But we’d worked up substantial appetites, so we went in search of a more robust menu.

Michigan's Top Pet Friendly Attraction: Mackinac Island | GoPetFriendly.com

Ice House BBQ and Bistro on the Greens both offered pet friendly patio seating. But the brightly colored umbrellas at the Hotel Iroquois’ Carriage House Restaurant caught our attention. We discovered that, while they’re unable to accommodate pets in their rooms, they’re happy to have them join you on their lovely veranda for drinks or a meal!

It was the perfect place to end our day before hopping back on the ferry and heading home.

Pet Friendly Accommodations on Mackinac Island

Unfortunately, the famous Grand Hotel does not allow pets. Built in 1887 to accommodate the island’s posh summer visitors, dogs visiting Mackinac Island aren’t even allowed on the grounds.

But, not to worry! There are three wonderful, pet friendly lodging options on the island to choose from.

Mission Point Resort , which has beautiful grounds and a dog friendly patio at their restaurant, welcomes up to two pets per room in the Straits Lodge for an additional $100 per-stay deep cleaning fee.

Park Place Suites offers just three condo units in the heart of downtown, so be sure to book REALLY early! Each condo comes complete with a kitchen and fenced yard. They charge an additional pet fee of $30 per night.

And Sunset Condos offers more seclusion and fantastic views of Lake Huron and the Mackinac Bridge. Their eight units sleep between 2 and 12 people, and they base their pet fee on the size of your pet. For pets less than 40 pounds, the fee is $75 per stay. If your pet is more than 40 pounds, it’s $100 per stay. And two pets over 40 pounds are $150 per stay.

How Long Does It Take To See Mackinac Island?

We did everything in this blog post in one day! But we really hustled. For a more leisurely vacation, a two- or three-day stay would be better.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Mackinac Island with your dogs is between mid-May and early July. The weather during this time is wonderful, with highs in the mid-40s Fahrenheit and fewer crowds in May. By July, the highs are in the mid-70s in July, but you’ll have to contend with more tourists.

Many of the businesses on Mackinac Island close over the winter. So if you’re looking for a secluded stay, this could be the perfect time to plan your trip. The Star Line’s winter ferry has a reinforced steel hull that allows it to break through thin ice on the Mackinac Straits. It continues to operate limited ferry schedules from its dock in St. Ignace during the winter months.

Grand Haven City Dog Beach is the summertime favorite beach near The Bil-Mar-and Grand Haven State Park beach.

You’ll find so many wagging tails having fun! Apart from that at the backdrop you’ll find Grand Haven lighthouse, see soft sand beaches, and meandering Grand River.

I would recommend walking downtown and clicking photos at Spring Lake. Also, enjoy the Grand Haven Musical Fountain that lights up the night sky.

Tip: Bring your umbrella as well as a dog umbrella because there is a very less shaded area.

9. Peterson beach

Fees: Free parking , first come first serve

Dog rule : Dogs are allowed only on the south end of the beach, and not on the north end of the beach.

Just imagine you’re watching a brilliant sun sinking into the beach with your dog by the natural beauty. It is truly memory-making, so enjoy the day!

Just end of the southern part of the Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore sits this secluded Lake offering wide vistas of Empire Buff and Platte River Point.

Peterson beach

These above 9 dog-friendly beaches in Michigan are the perfect place to end your week with your dog by your side.

Such lovely weekend trips will make him happy. Also, a friendly reminder, make sure you respect nature and keep the place, parks, and beaches clean.

17 Pup Popular Dog-Friendly Beaches in Michigan to Visit with your Pooch

places to visit in michigan with your dog

Located in the northern Mideast section of the United States, Michigan is surrounded by water, including Lake Michigan to the west and north, Lake Huron on the east, and Lake Erie to the south. With so much waterfront space, you know there are some fantastic beaches in Michigan to enjoy. But sometimes, it can be a hassle trying to figure out which ones are dog-friendly. Many of them are vague in their online descriptions, and you may end up at a beach that will not let your pup on the sand.

That is why we decided to do the research for you, so all you have to do is pick which ones you want to visit and have a great time. One thing to note, winter in Michigan is cold and snowy, so beaches are often closed during that time. Others are open for ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. But if you do not have a snow dog like a Husky, American Eskimo, or Alaskan Malamute, he may not be up for that kind of fun. Here are 17 of our top picks for you to check out.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Located in the upper peninsula of Michigan on Lake Superior, pups are welcome at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in certain areas, including picnic areas, trails, and several beaches. Some of the beaches include Sable Falls, Au Sable, Twelvemile Beach, Miners Beach, Sand Point, Munising Falls, Hurricane River, and the Lake Superior beaches in front of the campground and day-use areas. Most of the other areas in the park, except for the buildings, allow pets on a leash.

One of the favorites is the Miners Beach area, where you can take a walk on the Miners Falls Trail to see the waterfall and Miners Castle. Sand Point Beach is the most family-friendly because it has shallow water with fewer waves, and it also has picnic tables. Twelvemile Beach is the largest with, yes, you guessed it, 12 miles of beach. Sable Falls is a rocky beach that you have to walk to on a trail and then descend 168 steps to get there.

Straits State Park Beach

At the southeastern tip of the peninsula, Straits State Park is about two hours from Pictured Rocks and is dog-friendly to friendly dogs as long as they are leashed. This place has over 180 acres of recreational space and is situated where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. With thick forests, hilly fields, and lots of sandy beachfront, you get a little bit of everything at Straits State Park. You and your fur puppy can swim anywhere in the park, although there is no real sandy beach area.

The park also has a huge campground with 270 campsites and over a dozen cabins. The campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and access to hot showers and playgrounds. In all, there are three playgrounds in the park, but Fido is not allowed to play there. However, picnicking, kayaking, and hiking are all pup-friendly. During the winter, you can even go skiing and snowshoeing.

Fisherman’s Island Park Beach

An hour to the southwest, Fisherman’s Island Park has six miles of beach along Lake Michigan that allows pups on a leash. The 2,679-acre park is no longer on the island as it has moved to the mainland. The small island can be reached by boat from the park if you like, but there are no amenities there. Much of the fun is had on the mainland, where you and your pup can take a walk along the water to look for shells, have a picnic on the beach, or splash around in the water.

The park does not have much in the way of amenities either. It is mostly rugged ground with woods and bogs but it does have a campsite with 80 sites. However, there are no restrooms or showers, just port-a-potties. Many locals come here to fish and hunt, and some even come to look for treasures with metal detectors. And there is plenty of space for skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding during the winter.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes in Glen Arbors is pup popular and has been named one of America’s most beautiful places by Good Morning America. The whole park is dog friendly except for White Pine Beach, Platte Point Beach, North Bar Lake, and the Manitou Islands. It is only about 70 miles from Fisherman’s Island Park at Sleeping Bear Bay. Sandwiched between Glen Lake and Lake Michigan, you and your pup can find plenty of dog-friendly beach.

One of the most popular beaches is Esch Road Beach north of Esch Road, which is where Otter Creek meets Lake Michigan. The water in the creek is almost always warm, so it is more enticing to the humans. There are several campgrounds as well, but the only one that allows dogs is DH Day Campground in the northern area of the park. There are only 90 spots, though, so make sure you plan well in advance.

Orchard Beach State Park

Continue south along the banks of Lake Michigan for about an hour, and you will find Orchard Beach State Park . As long as you keep your fur puppy’s leash on, you can bring him with you throughout the park, including the beach, although it is closed during high water. Much of the park is on a huge bluff 100 feet above the water, where you can enjoy some stellar views of the water and the surrounding area.

With just over 200 acres, the park got its name from an apple orchard that was there over 100 years ago. Instead of apples, you will find limestone structures built in the 1930s that have now been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you take the hiking trail, you can see some of these structures as well as some of the old trees. There are also picnic areas, a playground, and a campground that has 168 sites.

Silver Lake State Park Beach

An hour to the south, Silver Lake State Park has almost 3,000 acres of space between Lake Michigan and Silver Lake. The 3+ miles of shoreline lies open to everyone, including your fur buddy, as long as he is leashed. Another 2,000 of those acres are sand dunes, which are an enjoyable feature for any dog as well as those with four-wheelers, side-by-sides, quads, and other ORVs. There is a special season for those with ORVs from April 1st until Halloween.

There is also a special section of dunes for walking and playing in without an ORV, which means you can take your canine companion to dig in the sand as much as he wants here. If you want to stay a while, pick from 237 sites in two different campgrounds, some of them right on the edge of Silver Lake. All sites have picnic tables, fire pits, grills, and tent slabs. The park also has playgrounds, picnic areas, and a lighthouse, as well as fishing and hiking opportunities.

Kruse Park Beach

Norman F. Kruse Park has a dog beach at the northern end of the park in Muskegon, about 45 miles south of Silver Lake. One unique thing about this lake is that dogs can be off the leash while they swim. There is a certain area for dog swimming, so make sure you look for the signs and remember that he has to be on a leash at all other times. The park has over 52 acres, with a huge picnic area with dozens of tables, grills, and restrooms with water.

Besides all that, there are also playgrounds, a basketball court, shelters, dune walks, and nature trails. You can get some of the best views of Lake Michigan from some of the overlooks. If you have a large group, they also have four picnic shelters you can reserve that seat between 25 and 40 people. Bring some burgers, and you can grill up some dinner for you and the pup!

Kirk Park Dog Beach central southwest 24 miles south of Kruse

Only 24 miles south of Norman F. Kruse Park, Kirk Park Dog Beach is one of the most pup popular parks in the area because of its leash-free beach section. Yes, Fido can be unleashed on the beach as well as in the water anytime from October through April but not between 10 AM and 6 PM from May through September. There is about ⅓ mile of beach along Lake Michigan for you and your canine compadre to enjoy.

Kirk Park also has close to 70 acres of bluffs, dunes, and nature trails as well as a deck that looks out over the lake. The trails have a wooden boardwalk over the dunes and through the woods where you and your pooch can explore, looking for wildlife. Many people come here to fish, swim, and sunbathe, so it can be crowded during the summer, which is why they have special hours for dogs.

Grand Mere State Park Beach

In the southwestern corner of Michigan, just over an hour from Kirk Park, Grand Mere State Park lauds a mile-long beach along Lake Michigan where you can take your fur baby to swim and play. He will have to remain on a lead the whole time you are in the park, but he will not mind. This park also has sand dunes like a few of the others, and although you cannot use an ORV here, you can play in the sand with your pup.

Climbing up the steep hills of sand can be strenuous, but sliding down the other side is so much fun! According to the experts, the dunes have been here for more than 10,000 years, and people come here from all over to enjoy sandboarding. You can also take your dog on one of the trails through the woods and sand. People also come from all over to fish for some huge bass, crappie, and bluegill.

River Oaks County Park

River Oaks County Park is about 70 miles from Grand Mere State Park and has a dog run as well as a lake and a river on its 330 acres. Morrow Lake may not be as huge as Lake Michigan, but it is perfect for playing in with your leashed pup. And he will love romping around the banks of the Kalamazoo River. The park is named for the oak trees along the lake that are more than 100 years old.

Besides the water and beaches, you can also enjoy the splash pad, boat ramp, picnic areas, playgrounds, hiking trails, and ball fields. The dog park is fully fenced, with four acres for big dogs over 25 pounds and one acre for the littler pooches. There is plenty of seating for pup parents to relax in the shade but make sure you get up and play fetch with your fur puppy while you are there. After all, you are his best friend.

Mill Pond Saline Dog Park Beach

Mill Pond Park is a 54-acre waterfront park in Saline, about 100 miles east of River Oaks County Park. Inside this park is a special place for canine companions, a one-acre off-leash dog park along the river. Saline Dog Park has fences on three sides, but your dog has access to Mill Pond and the river on the other side. You can join him in the water if you like or just sit on a bench and watch him have fun.

Your pup is welcome to enjoy the rest of the park too, but you have to put his leash back on. There are several hiking trails you and Fido can explore, a huge playground for the human kiddos, and a picnic area with tables, barbecue grills, and restrooms. The Saline River is a wonderful place for fishing if you have a Michigan fishing license, or you can take out a canoe or kayak on the pond.

William C Sterling State Park Beach

The only dog-friendly beach on Lake Erie, William C. Sterling State Park , is only an hour southeast of Mill Pond Dog Park. Besides the one mile of sandy beach along Lake Erie, you and your leashed canine companion are also welcome to play and fish in the River Raisin, which has a marina and campground. There are also several lakes, marshes, lagoons, and ponds throughout the 1,300 acres of park space where you and your pup can play.

The campground has 256 campsites to choose from, with showers, electricity, picnic tables, fire pits, and a playground. The beach area is nearby too so you can walk to the water from your campsite. Take your fur puppy for a walk on the seven miles of trails, and you may spot some wildlife like raccoons, deer, and even bears. Be sure to keep your pup on a short leash and bring plenty of doggie bags.

Bell Isle Dog Beach, southeast Detroit

Belle Isle Beach is a dog-friendly beach in Detroit, about 43 miles north of William C. Sterling State Park. With almost 1,000 acres of recreational space, Belle Isle Park is an island on the Detroit River between Michigan and Canada. Although the beach does not cover the whole island, the park does, and it includes many attractions. Some of these include the Livingston Memorial Lighthouse, Giant Slide, Oudolf Garden, Bell Isle Golf Course, and the Flynn Pavillion.

The beach is typically the main attraction, though and your pooch will agree as he romps up and down the sand and in the waves of the Detroit River. Just keep him on a short leash close to the riverbank because the currents are rough. The lighthouse is an incredible sight. Made of marble, it is the oldest in the country still standing. There is also an aquarium, conservatory, nature center, and museum, but dogs are not allowed.

Orion Oaks Dog Park Beach

The Orion Oaks Dog Park Beach is located in Orion Oaks County Park, 45 miles north of Belle Isle Dog Beach. Your furry family member can swim and play without the restraint of a leash within this 24-acre dog heaven. It is completely fenced with a special section for small and shy dogs as well as modern restrooms, a grassy field, drinking fountains, a picnic shelter, access to Lake Sixteen, and two trails. Your dog must be up-to-date on his shots and have a license on his collar.

The park itself has 916 acres with 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, and geocaching as well as picnic areas where you can enjoy a meal with your pup. He will have to be on his leash outside the dog park, though. Fishing on Lake Sixteen is also very popular, and there is a small boat launch for canoes and kayaks.

Bay City State Park Beach 100 miles north

About an hour to the north, Bay City State Park has more than 2,000 acres of wetlands, including the biggest freshwater marsh in the Great Lakes, Tobico Marsh. It is located on Saginaw Bay with over 1,000 feet of golden sand beach for you and your fur baby to enjoy as long as he is on a lead at all times. Besides the beach, the park also has seven miles of trails you can explore together.

Bring along a fishing license and gear, and you can try to catch some bass, sunfish, perch, or northern pike on the bay or in the lagoon. The shoreline has several dunes, but they are not as big as the others, so you can take your pup out on the sand without worrying about him sinking in the sand. There are 193 campsites here, too, but call in advance because they fill up fast.

Tawas Point State Park Beach an hour north of Bay City

Tawas Point State Park is at the end of Tawas Bay shoreline along Lake Huron, about 65 miles north of Bay City. The park has 153 acres and has been called the Midwest Cape Cod because of its beauty and charm. As long as your canine companion is leashed, you will have no trouble finding some fun whether you want to go boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, or biking. They even have a special area for metal detecting.

The beach is a popular spot, but the pup parents around the area know where to take their fur babies to swim. Right by the campground, there is a small beach just for dogs that is fenced in, so you do not have to worry about him running off. Your pooch will love being able to play in the water with the other pups. On the other side of the lake, sailing, fishing, and windsurfing are popular with the locals.

Bay View Park

The final beach is at Bay View Park in northeastern Michigan, about 60 miles north of Tawas Point. Right on Lake Huron in Thunder Bay, this park is part of the Thunder Bay River State Forest. Not only do you and your fur puppy have access to the beach on Lake Huron, but you can also walk over to Thunder Bay River and play around. As long as you keep your canine companion leashed and pick up after him, he is welcome.

Besides the beach and riverfront, Bay View Park also has a harbor, several basketball courts, tennis, and a huge grassy space for running around or lounging. There are picnic areas with grills and tables, a playground for the little humans, and hiking trails to explore the woods. Do not forget to pack your dog waste bags to pick up anything your fur baby drops while you are there.

The Final Woof

Enjoy a glass of wine (or two) at Mari Vineyards in Traverse City after a long day of play at the beach. Your dog is welcome to join you on the patio, and they will even bring him a bowl of water. If you have never been on a horse drawn carriage, you can do it on Mackinac Island Carriage Tours where pups are always welcome, and lap dogs are free. It is a fun and unique way to see the island. If you want to take your fur baby out on the water, the Bavarian Belle Riverboat in Frankenmuth is very popular and even has snacks and drinks.

Popular Lake Michigan dog beach to fully reopen this spring

Michiganders enjoy Lake Michigan

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A popular Lake Michigan dog beach will fully reopen this spring after nearly four years of reduced hours.

Starting May 1, dogs will once again be allowed off leash during all hours of park operation on the south beach area of Kirk Park at 9791 Lakeshore Drive in West Olive.

Like in years past, dogs won’t be allowed on the north end of the beach from May 1 to Sept. 30, and all dogs must be leashed on the trails leading from the parking lot to the south end beach.

Outside of that peak season period, the dogs can be off leash on any area of the beach but must be leashed on the trails. Park hours are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 1 through Oct. 15, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 16 through Feb. 28.

The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission on Feb. 16 approved returning to the previous dog beach hours.

Restricted hours were put in place in May 2020 not due to the COVID-19 pandemic but because of high water levels on Lake Michigan in 2019 and 2020 that caused shoreline erosion.

At Kirk Park, that erosion damaged the dune stairs used as the access point to the south end beach. The stairs had to be removed, leaving only the northern access point to get to the shoreline.

Related: Owners who disregard dog beach hours could soon be permanently banned from West Michigan park

The new stairs will be exactly where the old ones were and will be completed in the next few weeks, said Jason Boerger, coordinator of park maintenance and operations at Ottawa County Parks and Recreation.

The reason it took so long to put the stairs back in, Boerger said, is because the dune needed time to stabilize and get built back up.

The previous reduced hours forbade dogs from being anywhere on the beach between the peak usage hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 through Sept. 30 each year.

During that peak season, dogs were only allowed -- in any area of the beach -- between 7 and 10 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. There were no new restrictions placed on off-season usage.

The hours were an effort to find a compromise between allowing dogs on the beach and providing opportunities for different groups of people to enjoy the space.

“While that was a good temporary solution, it wasn’t super popular with our visitors and dog lovers,” Boerger said.

Boerger said the dog beach is well-loved, and that the parks commission is happy to end the reduced hours.

Before the dog beach was implemented about a dozen years ago, Tunnel Park – another beach park – was the county’s most popular park.

When the dog beach was put in place, Kirk Park took that title and remained the most popular park.

Following the reduced dog beach hours, Tunnel Park once again became the county’s most visited park again.

Erosion not only damaged the south access point stairs but also a significant part of the park’s Dune Ridge Trail, which had an overlook on top of the dune.

Insurance is covering the restoration of the trail, and parks officials are working on a timeline to get the trail put back in place, Boerger said.

The charming town of Galena, Illinois.

  • 13 Best Small Towns To Retire In Illinois In 2024

One exciting venture is embarking on a journey to uncover hidden gems in Illinois . The state is teeming with cities that are rich with attractions that cater to diverse tastes. Of course, of all the cities in Illinois, Chicago is easily considered the most popular. Illinois, however, has more to offer than just the Windy City. If you're in search of a place that has peaceful and idyllic retirement options, Illinois has to be among your top choices. At least 13 small towns here boast of breathtaking natural landscapes and offer a serene and relaxing haven for retirees.

Downtown Galena, Illinois.

Set in northwest Illinois, Galena is nestled amidst rolling hills and provides stunning views of the Galena River. It is home to several historic architectural wonders, including the Ulysses S. Grant Home. This former residence of the Civil War general and 18th President of the United States is worth a tour if you have a soft spot for prominent war heroes. Over at historic Main Street, several restored 19th-century buildings house a cluster of over a hundred boutiques, antique shops, and museums. A stroll across the area should make for a fun and relaxing experience, particularly when you consider that Parade.com ranked Galena among the towns in the US with the best main streets. Additionally, the annual violent crime rate here is less than two percent, so your chances of becoming a victim are low. When settling in Galena, accommodations range from cozy bed and breakfasts and historic inns to small but quiet cottages overlooking the river.

Island Park in Geneva, Illinois

Travel down the western end of Chicago , and you'll find Geneva. It has a charming downtown area flanked by the Fox River, providing a picturesque setting for a laidback stroll. The town's shopping district is home to an array of boutique stores, cafes, and galleries, perfect destinations when you need to relax and free your mind. If you're a history lover, staying in Geneva will not be complete until you explore the Fabyan Windmill. This 18th-century wooden structure remains fully functional. Listed as the Dutch Mill in the National Register of Historic Places, it stands more than 60 feet tall. Geneva has a relatively low crime rate, with violent crimes recorded at less than 1 percent annually. In 2013, Bloomberg's Businessweek also mentioned the city as the best place in Illinois to raise a child.

Aerial view of Woodstock, Illinois.

Woodstock is known for celebrating many exciting events throughout the year. These can range from fun festivals to small-town fairs. The most popular of these is Groundhog Day , which became the basis for the 1992 movie of the same title starring Bill Murray. Not to be missed is the lighting of Woodstock Square on Thanksgiving weekend. On this day, the place glows with thousands of miniature lights illuminating buildings, trees, and houses. Another noteworthy attraction is the Gothic architecture of the Woodstock Opera House. This 1889 historic landmark serves as the cultural entertainment center of Woodstock, regularly hosting plays, concerts, and performances. All these year-round celebrations are enough to keep you engaged and inspire you to live a happy retirement life. Don't worry about watching your back every time; Woodstock is a safe place. The crime rate has been steadily declining here since 2015.

A scene from Sycamore, Illinois

During the summer, Sycamore hosts the weekly Farmers Market where local farmers and aspiring business owners sell diverse products, from fresh vegetables to beauty soaps. By October, another popular event, the Pumpkin Festival, brings about food stalls, carnivals, and local shows. It's a great way to relive those happy childhood memories.

Meanwhile, if you love the outdoors, the beauty of Sycamore Park District is worth discovering. It's filled with walking trails, picnic areas, and serene lakes. There's also a golf club on site, which will come in handy on days you plan to spend the day on the green. Muggers and thieves are not commonplace as the crime rate in Sycamore is negligible, with a recent survey showing that the residents perceive the safety of Sycamore to be 100 percent.

Main Street in Galesburg, Illinois.

A 2020 census revealed that the total population of Galesburg is over 30,000, but the good news is that the crime rate in the area is significantly low. Statistics show that only around three violent crimes are committed here per 1,000 residents. You'll want to remember that as you make retirement plans in this town.

If you love the outdoors, you'll find life in Galesburg to be one great adventure, even in your senior years. The Bunker Links Golf Course in Lincoln Park will excite you with its 18 holes amidst rolling terrain. For fun on the water, a trip down Lake Storey Beach should be perfect as you can swim or relax on a rented boatExploration on land is also a popular activity in Galesburg, and the Galesburg Railroad Museum is among the landmarks you'll want to see. Much of the town's past revolved around the railroad industry. The museum was established to help preserve this glorious history and is a great way to enrich your mind. Galesburg hosts a world-class medical facility that is easily accessible; the Catholic-run OSF St Mary Medical Center offers a wide range of medical services, including treatment for minor injuries. It also provides annual physical exams, which you'll find helpful when you retire in Galesburg.

A historical covered bridge in Princeton, Illinois.

Princeton was once known as the "City of Elms" because of the large elm trees found all around the town sometime in the mid-20th century. Unfortunately, an epidemic killed off practically all of them. Still, even without the elms, Princeton is a remarkable home for retirees. It's hard not to feel inspired when seeing the historic Owen Lovejoy Homestead, named after a known 1838 abolitionist who sheltered runaway slaves. For outdoor fun, you can grab a bike and pedal to the Z Tour Bike Ride, held every year on the third Saturday of July. More than 700 bikers attend this annual event, which involves conquering five routes. The Amtrak Train Depot is another local attraction with a rich history. Built in 1911, it continues to provide residents and visitors easy daily access to various Princeton landmarks. The town also has a thriving retirement community, partly because many seniors find Princeton, with only 29 violent crimes committed per 100,000 residents, a safe place to retire.

The Soldiers' Monument sculpture by Lorado Taft in Oregon, Illinois

Oregon is home to the iconic Black Hawk Statue, said to be the second biggest in the world. Created by Lorado Taft, it rises 48 feet high, overlooking the Rock River. Eastern Illinois University offers lifelong learning opportunities for those who want to keep their mind sharp and active. It is a premier state institution founded in 1895 and houses several interesting landmarks. These include the Tarble Arts Center and the Doudna Fine Arts Center, which regularly hosts world-class live.

In downtown Oregon, antique shops and charming eateries welcome you to shop and dine. Park lovers will also have a field day here, with Carnation Park, Fairgrounds Park, Lions Park, Mix Park, and Kiwanis Park waiting to be explored. The last is unique since it's near downtown and quite popular among fishing aficionados. If you're considering becoming a full-time angler once you retire, Kiwanis Park should be on your list of choices. Camping is also popular in Oregon, but there are options for riverside bed and breakfast. There are also senior living prospects with scenic views. A prime example is Lake Ladonna Family Campground, ideal for those who are considering living out their retirement days in a fully-furnished RV.

Petersburg

Courthouse Square in Petersburg, Illinois

Petersburg is another destination in Illinois with a sparse population. A 2020 census indicates that the town has just a little over 2,000 residents, a statistic that hardly changed since 2010. Given this, it's not surprising that the crime rate here is showing a notable decline in 2021, which should interest of people prospecting for a retirement home.

Attraction-wise, you can look forward to seeing the Lincoln New Salem State Historic Site when settling down in Petersburg. The landmark, located just two miles south of the town, offers a glimpse into Abraham Lincoln's early life. Additionally, many original Victorian-era houses in Petersburg remain standing today.

Lincoln and Douglas debate site in Jonesboro, Illinois

Yet another place to consider as a retirement prospect is Jonesboro. With a population of a little more than 1,000, you should find yourself generally safe here. The fact that the total crime rate is only 8 per 1,000 people reinforces this perception. Jonesboro is an old town established in the 1800s and incorporated 18 years later. It has a glorious past, and the Jonesboro Square is a prime example; it was here where the third Lincoln-Douglas debate was held in 1858. Jonesboro is also home to the wood-framed Lutheran church St. Paulus Evangelisch Lutherischen Gemeinde, which was established in 1852. If you're looking to grow in your faith after retirement, this is a great place to start.

White County Courthouse in Carmi, Illinois.

This small Illinois town shows an increase in its senior population. A recent survey shows that the demographic is currently at 20 percent. You'll be in good company if you decide to live here after retirement. The Burrell Wood and Bicentennial Park is your go-to destination for relaxation, providing a beautiful green space with shady trees, well-maintained campgrounds, and numerous picnic areas.

Carmi's other attractions are full of history, the top among them being the Ratcliff Inn. Initially built in 1828, the historic landmark was erected in honor of James Ratcliff, Carmi's first postmaster and one of the town's founders. Records also show that in 1840, Abraham Lincoln checked in the Ratcliff Inn as he campaigned for the US presidency. It's also in Carmi, where you'll see the 1871 house of Colonel Everton J. Conger. He was the head of the group that arrested Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth.

Stinson Memorial Library in Anna, Illinois.

Although Anna is relatively small, many big things are regularly happening here. It's the ideal retreat if you still want to stay active after retirement. Along Main Street, you can pick from pizzerias, yogurt shops, and classy restaurants to quaint and serene diners, complementing many local businesses like fabric stores and antique shops.

Anna also has many great outdoor offerings, including the Shawnee National Forest and the town's rolling hills. The forest reserve is known for its diverse ecosystems and wildlife, and if you love hiking, conquering the trails of the Shawnee National Forest Iron Mountain should help you grow old gracefully. Since Anna is a relatively small town, it's unsurprising that it hardly has a record of any major crimes being committed and reported. This makes it suitable for retirees who want to live the rest of their lives peacefully.

Super Museum, Metropolis, Illinois

Metropolis is a familiar name to fans of the comic superhero Superman. That's because a giant 15-foot-tall statue of the Man of Steel will greet you when you enter the town. However, Superman's Metropolis and the one in Illinois are two different places. The latter is real, and other than Superman, there are many beautiful things that you'll want to see here. Fort Massac State Park is one of them, offering the best of nature's beauty as it rests along the Ohio River. Feel free to discover your hiking, biking, and fishing skills in this fantastic place on your retirement.

Interestingly, the real Metropolis has remained largely rural. Still, there are signs of progress, especially with the founding of the Super Museum, a quirky attraction celebrating the iconic superhero. Meanwhile, the George Rogers Clark Discovery Trail stretches for nine miles. It is a popular route among bikers since it links Metropolis to Brookport. In short, if you want your retirement days to blend simplicity and modern life, look closer at Metropolis and what it offers.

North Side Courthouse Square, Charleston, Illinois

Situated near the Embarras River, Charleston is a charming town that can make a worthwhile retirement destination. Apart from having a one percent violent crime rate, the place is known for its diverse and friendly community. The 2,000-acre-wide Fox Ridge State Park is the prime attraction here, offering a serene setting for outdoor activities like canoeing, hiking, and fishing. These are fun and effective ways of staying physically fit as you age.

Senior citizens with academic aspirations can enroll at Eastern Illinois University to keep their minds sharp and active. It's the premier state school this side of Charleston, founded in 1895, and houses several interesting landmarks. These include the Tarble Arts Center, a local art community hub, and the Doudna Fine Arts Center, where world-class live performances are held regularly.

Illinois, known for its vast agricultural lands, bustling urban centers, and iconic landmarks like Chicago's skyline, offers a surprising array of small towns perfect for retirement living in 2024. Expectations of Illinois often revolve around its metropolitan areas, yet its small towns unveil a different facet of Midwestern charm. Those envisioning a retirement in Illinois may anticipate Midwestern hospitality, scenic landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. What they will discover in these small towns surpasses expectations: a genuine warmth among neighbors, from festivals celebrating local history to farmers' markets showcasing fresh produce, affordable living, and access to nature's beauty.

Travel round the world with your pet with these top spots to explore with your cat or dog

When looking for somewhere to vacation with your pet, you may feel spoiled for choice. Whether you want to travel domestically or internationally, many places love dogs, cats and pets of all kinds just as much as we do and provide pet-friendly accommodation.

One thing to consider when it comes to how to travel with a dog or traveling with a cat are quarantine periods: if you want to visit another country for two weeks and the quarantine period for animals entering the country is that long in itself, it might be worth leaving your furry friend behind.

However, if you’re looking to take an extended stay in another country, there are plenty of options available that will allow you to cross their borders with your pet after a period of isolation. Here are some of the best...

Take your dog with you on a canine cruise, or if you’re a cat lover visit The Catcade, an arcade that is home to many cats who are perfectly happy watching people win and lose at arcade games. You can also visit “the bean” - sorry Cloud Gate - by Anish Kapoor, but you’ll have to leave your pet behind for this one, as Millennium Park does not allow pet visitors.

As well as pet-friendly accommodation, St Petersburg has plenty of walkable areas and parks to explore with your pet.
