India : Colours of India & Yoga by The Ganges W/private guide in each city

An amazing experience. From the culture and history to the vibrant busy streets to calm and spiritual. This trip gave us a taste of the North of India. It was very well planned and organised. We felt safe and very well looked after. Everyone was considerate, helpful and friendly. We would love to go back to different areas of India, we will also look at tour radar and wanderful holidays for other travel experiences. Thank you so much.

Yoga, Ganga & Tajmahal - Golden Triangle with Haridwar & Rishikesh !!

All of my guides were super knowledgeable, curteous, patient, and professional. My accommodations were good! I had the best driver in all of India. I was lucky to experience both highlights and tourist attractions as well as go off the beaten path to local spots! They looked after me very well!

The tour was orginized very well. Communication with Yolo India Tours was easy. Driver was waiting for us at the airport even though our passport control takes 2 hours and we had no chance to contact him. He drives well and safe. Hotels were nice and clean, well equiped. Tour guides were sympatic and skilled, but they took us to suvenir ship with words just come to see how we are making traditionally: hand printing on cloth, engraving in marble,...some people may like it. Be prepared for higher cost for sighseeing after covid - 200 Euro in total. I noticed two weeks before trip the change of itinerary. They add extra Fatehpur Sikiri and Haridwar. As we had privite tour (no more people for that dates) they keep asking you what you want to see and what not. Not exact itinerary was met - some sighseeing closed, some too crowdy (3 hours waiting) or not covinient to see due indian festival (Vrindavan). About meal - breakfast in hotels were good, lunch on the way where driver stpped

I have used Paylesstours India for the second time in three years now and I found their services efficient and the company very reliable. No problem to make an advance payment of the tour, they will deliver as promised. The company selects proper cars, good drivers and experienced guides, some are better than others like in any company, but generally speaking these guides know the sights well. I have dealt on both occasions with Mr Prakash and found him responsive and flexible to adjust the itinerary to my particular wishes. I had visited a lot of beautiful and interesting places , everything worked out fine and Payless Tours India was able to recommend the best places to stay.

Golden Triangle with Ranthambore (Jungle Safari) and Spiritual Rishikesh

What a fantastic holiday Wanted to visit India, found Gets Holidays on line. From the initial contact to our departure at the airport they exceeded our expectations in all they delivered and the quality of service received. India is a vast and beautiful county with many places to visit. I worked with Gets on our time line and we visited the Golden Triangle, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shimla and Delhi. All arrangements had been made, this included very good hotels, fantastic drivers, good guides and all amenities. The Taj Mahal is a sight to see, its beauty is amazing. Rishikesh is a very special place, we had fantastic accommodation on the banks of the Holy River Ganges. Amritsar and the Punjab region is very special, the Wagah Border ceremony is a must see. Shimla was larger than expected but you can still explore the old town round Mall road. We took the train from Chandigarh to Deli, Shatabdi Express what a great way to travel, very comfortable and a great dinner on board. Full train and as with all of India very friendly passengers to guide and assist us. The food was fantastic but remember to ask for “little Spice” We had limited time in Delhi, just enough to see the main sights, we need to go back to explore more. India is amazing but it’s the PEOPLE who really make India a memorable experience, their warmth and hospitality is amazing.

Wow! I have no words... This was a dream come true and highly recommend if you want to experience the beauty of northern India. 2. Kalari Kovilakam Tour

Hatha style concentrates mainly on meditation

The Hatha style concentrates mainly on meditation and Pranayama breathing techniques and no excessive or strenuous exercise or asanas. The focus is on the slow building up of physical capacity. This complete body and mind experience is aimed at improving your health and total well-being. This kind of yoga is accessible to all and is light so as to support the treatment process.

Location: Payyallur, Kollengode, Palakkad, Kerala 678506 Website

3. Osho Meditation Tour

Hatha yoga

Osho introduced something totally unknown to hatha yoga. The body must go through a catharsis first. To bring about this catharsis, a new science was launched by Osho, because this suppression is something new. If hatha is taught to a person who is not totally involved in it – who only comes to do hatha yoga once or twice, or even for an hour a day, but who is involved for twenty-three hours a day in quite a different world, a work that is quite the contrary – it is not going to help much. The very method is a monastic method.

The 10 Best Life-Changing Yoga Retreats In India

The birthplace of yoga.

The ‘source’, as it’s often called among yoga communities.

We’re talking about India, of course; and with such a rich yogic history, this inspiring — if sometimes confronting — country is an easy choice for an authentic yoga retreat.

Yoga retreats in India come in all shapes and sizes. From laid back beach vibes to intensive study in a traditional ashram, there’s something here to suit everyone.

Why choose India as a yoga retreat destination?

Do you want…

  • A huge choice of great teachers in incredible locations — from bustling and colorful cities, to serene and silent mountain retreats?
  • To absorb the history of yoga as you move through your practice; and even as you walk down the street, or sit down to your evening meal?
  • To enjoy delicious local food, or immerse yourself in the yogic lifestyle with an Ayurvedic diet?
  • The freedom to choose a style of retreat that suits you; whether you’re looking for something profound and intensive, or a relaxed yoga holiday?
  • A retreat that doesn’t cost the earth — because of cost of living (and the cost of yoga) in India is lower than in many popular yoga destinations
  • Sunshine, new experiences, and the chance to encounter different ways of life?

India offers all of this and much more!

India’s popular yoga spots

India is dotted with cities and rural areas known for yoga.

Some of the top destinations for yogi travelers include:

  • Rishikesh:  for its peaceful mountain atmosphere, awe-inspiring scenery, and teachers who are alive with the traditional wisdom of Indian yoga
  • Goa: for its vibrant beach towns and villages, endless opportunities for swimming (and sunbathing), and laid back, friendly retreat centers
  • Kerala: for its spiritual history, beaches and palm trees, and eclectic backwaters that are home to incredible wildlife

What is the most popular yoga in India?

Different forms of yoga are practised all over India, and just as yoga has evolved throughout the rest of the world, it has done so in its birth country too.

But perhaps the most popular style of yoga in India is Iyengar Yoga.

The founder of this precise form of practice was B.K.S. Iyengar, was born in Bellur — in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka.

B.K.S. Iyengar was taught yoga by Guru Sri T. Krishnamacharya, who is generally accepted as the inventor of modern yoga .

But Krishnamacharya’s intense yoga practice just didn’t work for Iyengar’s body — and it inspired him to create his own style, with the use of lots of props.

If you’ve ever been to an Iyengar class you’ll know it involves lots of blocks, straps, blankets, and even harnesses hanging from the walls.

Iyengar then brought Iyengar Yoga to the west and became a globally renowned yoga teacher and scholar.

His legacy lives on all over the world, including in India; where his teachings are widely used today.

To travel to India, the land of yoga’s origins, is to enter a country that is in constant transformation, yet somehow timeless. It is a land with a temple or shrine around every corner, where the sacred is revered in every river and mountain, where the search for enlightenment is in the air. For many yoga students in the West, a trip to India goes beyond sightseeing. It can be a sacred journey and a deepening of one’s yoga practice, as well as pure adventure.

“If you’re looking for devotional or meditative inspiration, India is the source,” says Darren Main, a yoga teacher who leads retreats on the subcontinent. Indeed, in India you can intimately experience the culture that gave birth to yoga, tapping into both its ancient roots and its living tradition.

Some travelers to India start their trip by setting an intention for personal exploration, with hearts dedicated to transformation, like the pilgrims of old. “I felt this pull to go there that I couldn’t explain,” says Jenay Martin, a yoga teacher and photographer who has traveled to India four times. “Each time I go, I set an intention for my journey, and it ends up changing me powerfully.”

“I longed to make my first pilgrimage to India because I knew it would be like coming home,” says Dana Flynn, the founder of Laughing Lotus Yoga, who took a solo trip to India. “I had heard many claims about the life-changing powers of India. I wanted to see for myself. It melted my malaise and taught me the true meaning of compassion.”

Should you feel called to a similar journey of the heart, where should you direct your path in the magical, mythical, and sometimes maddening place that is India? The answer is as infinite as India is diverse. You can seek out the locations of the mythic escapades of the gods and goddesses, mortals and monkeys of India’s epic stories. You can gaze upon awe-inspiring cultural sites, including ancient Hindu temples, the birthplaces of Buddhism, and the jewels of Islamic architecture. The journey can be an exploration of sacred rivers or hallowed mountains. Or it can be a pilgrimage to the study centers of modern yoga’s founders—T. Krishnamacharya, K. Pattabhi Jois, B.K.S. Iyengar, Swami Vivekananda—the names alone evoking a legacy that has linked East and West for more than a century.

While it may be tempting to visit every corner of the country, exploring a handful of places deeply can be most rewarding. We have chosen to introduce you here to five special sites that have been spiritual and cultural hubs for millennia. Each offers an encounter with the living history of yoga—an up-close look at the elaborately woven tapestry of myth, history, and contemporary life that is India. These five destinations reflect India’s reverence for the transcendent in nature—the sea, the holy river, the mountains, caves, and rocks. And each invites you to linger, become absorbed, and perhaps learn something about your own inner landscape, as well.

“Each of India’s holy places echoes with a pulse, a whisper of those who also stood in our shoes: seekers, dreamers, thinkers, practitioners,” says Kate Holcombe, the director and founder of San Francisco’s Healing Yoga Foundation and a contributing editor at Yoga Journal. “Visiting these ancient sites, where hundreds of thousands have walked, prayed, loved, struggled, hoped before us, is a way of honoring the lineage of the great souls from whom we have received the teaching of yoga.”

Wherever you go in India, plan on surrender. For all that it has to offer, travel here can be daunting. The heat, the crowds, the unpredictable train schedules can overwhelm. But the obstacles may also offer great lessons.” India will teach you to surrender to the cycles of life,” says Eric Shaw, founder of Prasana Yoga. “In India, one goal of yoga is firmly in place: relying on the rhythms of the universe. This is so strong here. It will erode your ego more powerfully than any stateside yoga practice can.”

Indeed, India is best approached with a grand openness. Let go of your expectations and be open to the world. Think of these five destinations as thresholds, or tirthas , to cross over into regions rich with myth, devotion, and friends you haven’t yet met.

Lose Yourself in the City of Prayer

Varanasi, uttar pradesh.

The ever-present clanging of puja bells echoing from innumerable temples and shrines and the flickering of ghee lamps illuminating the Ganges River at night bring to life the words of cultural geographer Rana P.B. Singh: “Varanasi,” he writes, “is the city that is a prayer.”

One of the oldest inhabited cities on Earth and one of India’s holiest, the essence of Varanasi is faith. The very stones of this teeming city are said to be imbued with the presence of Shiva, who myths say appeared here as an endless column of light at the beginning of time. Pilgrims come from all over India to honor Shiva and Ganga, the river that’s seen as a living goddess. A visit here, they believe, can be a step toward liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth.

The daily rhythms and rituals of the city follow the rising and setting of the sun. Walk the ghats, sets of steps leading into the water, that line the western bank of the Ganges River, and you’ll see pilgrims bathing at sunrise or reaching their palms to the flames of aarti , ghee lamp offerings, each evening.

Witnessing these moments can give insight into the deeper meaning of familiar practices, says David Moreno, a yoga teacher who leads tours in India. “Everything comes to life for me at sunrise in Varanasi,” he says. “When you see people lined up in adoration to the coming light, you understand that Sun Salutations are a prostration to the giver of life,” he says. “It puts my practice in a timeless context. It lets me feel like I’m part of a continuum.”

Where Buddha Preached: In nearby Sarnath, find the serene ruins of Deer Park, where Buddha gave his first sermon. A five-hour train ride will take you to Bodh Gaya, where he reached nirvana.

Seek Yoga at the Source

Rishikesh, uttarakhand.

Some 500 miles upriver from Varanasi, nestled deep in a forested gorge where the holy Ganges descends from the Himalayas, lies the town of Rishi-kesh, a place to practice yoga in the footsteps of the ancient yogis. Long an out-of-the-way refuge from the world, Rishikesh today is a lively hub for yoga students and international travelers. The ashrams, temples, and shops clustered along the banks of the Ganges hum with activity from dawn to dusk. Shopkeepers bargain with backpackers; chai wallahs sell hot, milky tea; saffron-clad sadhus seek alms. But peace is always within reach at the river shore, where white sand shimmers with sunlight diffused in mist.

The region (including the nearby town of Haridwar) is considered a tapobhumi , a place of retreat and meditation. The forests around Rishikesh attracted fervent yoga practitioners throughout history, such as the Sage Vasistha (namesake of the pose Vasisthasana and one of the authors of the Vedas). The town’s many ashrams and retreat centers keep these traditions alive, offering serious students of yoga a chance to study, practice, and commune with others on the same journey. Popular spots include the Parmath Niketan Ashram, which hosts an annual yoga festival each March, and the headquarters of the Divine Life Society, where Swami Sivananda resided for years. (His student, Swami Vishnu-devananda was one of the first to teach hatha yoga in the West in the 1960s.)

The Ganges River is relatively clean here, and its sparkling white-sand beach is a serene place for a soul-purifying plunge. “Normally you go on pilgrimage to see a deity, but here it is a deity that is coming to you,” says Raghunath, a US-based yoga teacher who teaches Hindu devotional traditions and leads trips to India. “It flows down from the Himalayas, coming from the celestial plane and breaking through the material universe, giving you its benediction. It heals you and cleanses the heart.”

Practicing yoga in a place where generations of yogis have bent their bodies in supplication is like tapping into a deep spiritual spring, says Pandit Vamadeva Shastri, director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies, who leads annual retreats here: “A few days here can sustain one’s practice for the rest of the year, if not for years to come.”

Follow the Path of Legend

Hampi, karnataka.

Walk amid ruins of palaces and temples and the bewitching, boulder-strewn landscape of Hampi, and it’s easy to imagine yourself surrounded by the royal city that once thrived here or even by mythical characters from the Ramayana, the Hindu epic. This area is the legendary Kishkinda, realm of the monkey gods. Here Rama, on his quest to rescue his kidnapped wife Sita, is said to have met the monkey god Hanuman.

None

The remains of more than 500 stone monuments are scattered over the 16-square-mile area of this UNESCO World Heritage site, which is the former capital of the Vijayanagar empire (in power from the 14th to 16th centuries). Amid the gracious ruins of medieval Indian culture, you’ll also find humbler shrines expressing the local villagers’ heartfelt devotion to Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. Across the Tungabhadra River from Hampi is the tiny village of Anegundi, which you can reach by a coracle ferry (a large, round floating basket). Here you’ll find the Shabari Ashram, where Rama’s footprint is preserved, and Hanuman’s birthplace, Anjanadri Hill. Climb its 570 steps to view the Hanuman Temple and a sweeping vista. (Watch out for Hanuman’s earthly brethren, the playful wild monkeys that live among the rocks.)

In Hampi, says Marla Apt, an Iyengar Yoga teacher who goes to India annually, you’ll see pilgrims worshiping at intact shrines among the ruins, infusing them with a living presence. “What makes places feel dead or alive is how the people there behave,” says Apt. In Hampi, she says, as in much of India, past and present are interwoven into a fine cloth. ” When you’re there, you appreciate the ancientness of India and feel yourself in that time and place. It’s really magical.”

See the Divine in the Human

Mamallapuram, tamil nadu.

Along the white-sand shores of the Bay of Bengal, just south of Chennai, lies the village of Mamallapuram (formerly called Mahabalipuram), a place to marvel at the sacred art and stories of India. Some 1,400 years ago, under Pallava rule, Mamallapuram was a thriving port, where hundreds of craftsmen labored to create some of the most noteworthy shrines and sculptures of India. Today, it is a dreamy, jasmine-scented beach town, where you’ll wake to the rhythmic clinking of artisans’ chisels crafting new artwork and keeping the ancient tradition alive, and fall asleep to the sound of the waves washing over legendary ruins buried at the shore.

Here you can explore the mythologies of India. Step into shrines sculpted as chariots of the gods, led by their larger-than-life mounts, including Nandi (the bull ridden by Lord Shiva) and Lord Indra’s giant elephant. Gaze upon an image of Durga, victorious over the slain demon Mahisha, or enter the cool shade of a man-made cave where artisans carved the legend of Krishna lifting up a mountain to protect a village from Indra’s wrath. Here, Kate Holcombe explains, you can absorb the Indian concept of darshan , beholding the Divine. “These images, and the stories they tell, serve as a mirror for us. When we can see our own human qualities in the gods or goddesses, we can also see the Divine in the human, in ourselves,” she says.

You can also discover here one of the oldest known images of an asana: a carving of a yogi (perhaps the epic warrior Arjuna) holding Tree Pose, part of one of the world’s largest bas reliefs, carved into a wall of stone a hundred feet across.

Climb the hill that dominates the town for views of the sunset and the stone spires of the Shore Temple. Perhaps, looking out to the sea as a wave retreats, you can imagine the six other temples that legend says once stood beside the Shore Temple. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami swept away sand, revealing submerged structures, hinting that the myth may just be true.

City of Temples: While the arts flourished in Mamallapuram, monastic and temple culture thrived in nearby Kan-chipuram, the capital of the Pallava Empire. Visit majestic temples that have been active for close to 1,400 years, enjoy the town’s bustling silk markets, and watch weavers make the richly patterned saris the region is known for.

Connect With the Eternal in Nature

Mount arunachala, tamil nadu.

Drive southwest across the Deccan Plateau from Chennai, through emerald-green rice paddies scattered with coconut trees, and your view will be dominated by a single, majestic form: Mount Arunachala. Seen as a sacred manifestation of the god Shiva, the mountain has attracted devotees for millennia and today draws travelers seeking a quiet place to contemplate the transcendent in nature.

India scholar Diana Eck writes that Mount Arunachala is said to have “erupted from the earth at the dawn of creation,” a mountain of flame transformed into rock. As though still drawn to the light, pilgrims come by the thousands during the full moon to circumambulate the mountain. Each year during an autumn festival, a great beacon fire, using more than 7,000 pounds of ghee for fuel and a 1,000-foot wick, is lit atop the mountain.

In Tiruvannamalai, a town at the foot of the mountain, the Arunachaleswara Temple reverberates with the chant Om namah sivaya each morning. But silence prevails outside of town at the Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram. Here, the modern Indian guru lived from 1922 to 1950, teaching a yoga of reflection and self-inquiry, often through his silent presence alone. Today, travelers can spend time in retreat at the ashram (write in advance), starting the day chanting with young monks from an adjoining school for the Vedas and enjoying vegetarian meals prepared with dairy from resident cows.

Down a dappled path into the woods are the cave hermitages where the guru meditated from 1899 to 1922. Here you can sit undisturbed in the cool of a small white-washed room, meditating in the grounding energy of the cave’s embracing space. Or take a stroll higher up the mountain to breathe in the expansive views of the valley, seeing how the temples in the town below dwindle before the soaring grandeur of nature’s monument.

Savor the Journey: Somewhere along your journey in South India, be sure to stop on the side of the road to sip young coconut water. Let the vendor cleave the coconut with a machete, and scoop out the tender flesh with a spoon. Resting in the shade, watch life pass by and marvel at all that is India. Remember the intention you set and the exhilaration and perhaps exasperation that the country inspires, and know that when you return home, you will be indelibly changed.

  • What to Expect During a Yoga Retreat

For travelers who enjoy yoga and want to better understand this ancient practice, there is no better place to go than India.

In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about doing yoga in India from the differences between western and Indian yoga to where to go, the best retreats, and what to expect from an ashram experience.

But, no matter how you choose to practice yoga in India, one thing is for sure: your experience here will change you for the better and help you reach new heights within your practice.

Why You Should Experience Yoga in India

Over the last 20 years, yoga has spread from South Asia to the rest of the world and has become a popular way to exercise in almost every country. So, if every country does yoga, why should you go to India to experience it?

The answer is that yoga is simply different in India . It is hard to describe how, but we would say that the way people practice and teach yoga is more pure, organic, and spiritual in the country in which it was created.

If you need more convincing, here are 3 reasons why you should experience yoga in India.

1. Indian yoga and western yoga are not the same

In the west, there is a disconnect between practicing yoga and its true purpose and meaning. This is because when yoga was introduced to the west it was changed in order to better appeal to western culture which yearned for an exercise method that gave quick results and had a specific end goal.

Today, for many people in the west, yoga is a great form of exercise and is often practiced using workout-style quick flows intended to make you sweat.

This is not how yoga is practiced in India . Indians don't see yoga as a physical practice that has an end goal. Although there is a physical aspect to yoga in India, it is just one part of a larger ideology.

In reality, Indian yoga is part of a complete lifestyle that includes how you treat others, what you eat, and how you respect the world around you. The purpose of the asanas , or poses, in Indian yoga is to relax your mind and prepare it for meditation where you can search for inner peace and happiness.

2. Discover ancient tools to find contentment and spiritual balance

Yoga has been documented as a practice in India since the 7th century BCE. The longterm success of yoga is due to the fact that its methods truly help people clear emotional and physical blockages . The goal of yoga is to bring peace and contentment to your mind and better connect it to your body.

That being said, yoga is a complicated process that is learned through the journey of a person's life. In order to get the tools to find this spiritual balance, it is best to have a skilled teacher which is why so many yoga practitioners are heading to India today.

In India, you will learn about the 8 different tools , or steps, of yoga including ethical guidelines and principles, postures and movements, breathing techniques, ability to look inward, concentration, meditation, and the ultimate goal of yoga: fulfillment.

3. India is a great place for all yoga lovers whether beginner or advanced

Indian yoga is not about who can do the best headstand or tree pose but is instead focused on the spiritual journey and your personal progress. Because of this, India is a great place to practice yoga no matter your level.

There are plenty of yoga retreats and ashrams in India that have specific courses for beginners and there is no need to worry about being considered "not good enough". The only requirement for yoga in India is sincerity and a desire to improve.

India is also perfect for advanced yoga practicers who are skilled in postures and mindfulness but just need that extra help and concentration to bring their practice to the next level. Advanced practicers will benefit greatly from experienced gurus who have spent decades mastering the craft.

Yoga is not a physical practice but a spiritual one and how good you are at yoga is not measured by the number and difficulty of your postures but rather by how it positively affects your life and relationships with others.

Most gurus describe yoga as a spiritual science that's purpose is to quiet your mind and better connect it to your body. Once your mind and body are connected, you can explore your inner self more deeply and understand more about what your body truly needs.

Because yoga has been practiced in India for over a thousand years, many different schools of thought and types of yoga have been developed. Here, we will describe the types of traditional yoga that are often taught in India.

Many of the newer types of yoga that are popular in the west such as hot yoga are not included because they are untraditional and are not often practiced in India.

Hatha yoga is a general term that includes all types of yoga that teach physical postures or asanas along with breathing exercises or pranayama . The goal of hatha yoga is to relax your body and mind in order to prepare for other spiritual practices like meditation.

Most yoga that is taught in the West is hatha yoga. Hatha yoga can vary a lot from teacher to teacher but in general, it starts slowly and is great for beginners who want a more relaxed yoga style where each pose is held for a longer period of time.

Vinyasa is also a general yoga term that describes any type of practice that includes rapid flows and continuous movement from one posture to the next. Synchronized breathing is also another important part of vinyasa yoga.

The constant flow of poses along with inhales and exhales often helps new students be mindful and focus on the practice instead of letting their thoughts wander.

Ashtanga yoga is based on ancient yoga teachings and involves a series of postures similar to vinyasa yoga. However, in Ashtanga yoga, the same poses are always performed in the exact same order and each pose gets progressively more difficult.

This type of yoga is often physically demanding and causes internal heat which helps detoxify your muscles and internal organs.

Iyengar yoga was started by B.K.S. Iyengar who has become one of the most famous yoga gurus in modern times. The main difference between Iyengar yoga and other types is that Iyengar focuses on the small details of every posture.

Poses are often held for longer in Iyengar yoga than in other forms and participants are asked to pay close attention to the alignment of their muscles in each pose.

Sivananda yoga was created by Swami Sivananda and is a type of hatha yoga. Sivananda yoga classes often begin with a relaxation pose followed by a sun salutation and then the class goes through Sivananda's 12 postures.

Full-length Sivananda classes also often include chanting and meditation.

Kundalini yoga incorporates many parts of yoga including repeated movements and postures, breathing techniques, chanting, mantras, and meditation. What makes Kundalini yoga different is that the purpose of the practice is to awaken the energy at the base of a person's spine and draw it through the seven chakras.

This type of yoga uses repetitive breathing and movements to move energy through the body.

Best Yoga Destinations in India

In India, there are certain cities that are yoga hubs. These cities often contain many yoga retreats and ashrams and have a long history of influential yoga teachers and students.

Here are some of the top cities in India to experience yoga.

1. Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located in Uttarkhand near the Himalayas and is often referred to as the 'Yoga Capital of the World'. The practice of yoga is thought to have originated in the Himalayas and the closer you get to the mountains, the more traditional the yoga will be.

Rishikesh is home to many gurus and teachers and is a great place to study yoga, meditation, and spirituality. Rishikesh is also a beautiful destination surrounded by nature and located in the mountains.

Many ashrams in Rishikesh are quite formal and students there follow a strict schedule and diet.

Every year, thousands of people travel to Mysore to study yoga and the city has become the most popular place for foreigners to learn yoga in India after Rishikesh.

Mysore first became famous due to the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute which was founded in 1948 by Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois. Mysore is often regarded as the home of Ashtanga yoga and has seen many of the 20th century's most influential yoga teachers.

Kerala is the perfect place for travelers who are interested in practicing yoga and learning about Ayurveda, India's 5000-year-old traditional medicine. In Kerala, most yoga retreats combine the two into a spiritual and health awakening.

Here you can deepen your yoga practice and received Ayurvedic treatments to help heal your body and bring it back into balance.

Keralan yoga often combines hatha yoga with Kalari which is a form of ancient warrior yoga done to enhance the spiritual powers of soldiers.

4. Varanasi

Varanasi is a 3000-year-old city that has a long tradition of yoga and is often considered to be the most spiritual place in India. Here you can join in with the locals as they stand on the shores of the Ganges to perform sun salutations and then deepen your practice in one of the city's many yoga retreats.

Yoga in Varanasi is steeped in spiritual tradition and discovery.

Traditionally, Goa has not been a popular center for yoga as the majority of the local population is not Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain.

In recent years, Goa has transformed into a great location for yoga students as more and more retreats have popped up to meet demand. Yoga in a Goan retreat is often more relaxed and not as strict as in some of the more traditional Hindu cities.

Here you can casually study yoga and search for inner peace while laying on the beach or swimming in the cool Arabian Sea.

How to Experience Yoga in India

Yoga in India can be experienced in many forms and at many different levels of intensity.

Travelers who want to experience a couple of quick yoga classes can find reputable courses offered at many 4 and 5-star hotels. While these classes can't guarantee the intense soul searching that other programs provide, they are a great way to experience traditional Indian yoga and learn more about the true purpose of the practice.

Travelers who want a more in-depth yoga experience can spend a day at a yoga center . During this time, guests will be able to deepen their understanding of yoga and gain some of the important tools to begin their spiritual journey.

Travelers who really want to achieve a new balance and awakening can spend time in a yoga retreat or ashram . On the retreat, you will take courses taught by experienced yoga masters and truly begin to understand the depth of yoga and your practice.

There are many different types of yoga retreats that are available in India. It is important to do a lot of research before booking a yoga retreat to make sure that you are choosing one that aligns with your goals.

In general, there are two main categories of yoga retreats including the stricter retreats or ashrams and the more relaxed yoga holiday retreats.

Some yoga retreats can be referred to as ashrams. Ashrams offer yoga students and spiritual learners a place where they can relax in quiet and solitude while learning from an experienced yogi or teacher.

Ashrams are best for yoga students who are very serious about their practice . If you want to stay in an ashram, you will likely be required to follow a strict schedule that includes early morning activities, meditation, yoga classes, simple meals, and an early bedtime.

Ashrams are meant to be a place that allows you to take a break from your normal responsibilities and live a simple life while spending your time looking inward. These yoga retreats are often located away from popular tourist destinations in a remote and quiet place surrounded by nature.

Rooms in ashrams are often very simple and definitely won't be as comfortable as a hotel. Students at the ashram often follow a strict yoga diet which includes simple vegetarian meals made from locally grown food.

Yoga Holidays

Yoga holiday retreats are best for people who are interested in yoga but want to relax and enjoy their vacation while deepening their spiritual understanding. Yoga holidays normally take place in a hotel or resort with comfortable rooms and restaurants that offer a variety of meal choices.

Yoga holidays also follow a much more relaxed schedule and allow students to miss their classes, wake up late, and leave the resort to explore nearby tourist areas. Most yoga holiday packages include two yoga classes a day and the rest of the time can be spent enjoying other spiritual classes or relaxing in nature.

The best places to go for yoga holidays are Goa and Kerala. Goa specializes in yoga holidays with beach relaxation while Kerala has yoga holidays in beautiful jungle towns with the addition or Ayurvedic massages and other treatments.

If you are someone who wants the more serious style of yoga retreat where you only focus on deepening your practice and attaining spiritual balance, then here are some great ashrams to look into:

1. Parmarth Niketan

Location: Rishikesh, Uttarkhand

Located on an 8-acre campus in the hills of the Himalayas near Rishikesh, Parmarth Niketan is a wonderful place to study yoga while surrounded by peaceful nature.

This ashram has 1,000 rooms and offers programs on beginner yoga, spirituality, Vedic heritage, and yoga teacher training. The ashram is particularly famous for its week-long Yoga Festival that it puts on every year in March.

2. Yoga Vidya Mandiran

This ashram is perfect for people who not only want to learn about yoga but are also interested in the entire lifestyle that comes with it. Here, you will take classes on meditation, breathing techniques, philosophy, and mantra.

The ashram also offers programs that teach many different styles of yoga including Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga.

Here you will get basic but comfortable accommodation, simple vegetarian meals, and opportunities to visit nearby temples or go for hikes in the mountains.

3. Krishnamachar Yoga Shala

Location: Mysore, Karnataka

Krishnamachar Yoga Shala is a great ashram for those who are looking for an intense yoga training and spiritual experience. This ashram is dedicated to teaching all aspects of yoga including meditation, chanting, Ayurveda, and Ashtanga and only accepts students who register for at least one month of class at the ashram.

Krishnamachar Yoga Shala is particularly famous as the teaching location of the oldest living teacher of Ashtanga yoga, BNS Iyengar.

4. Bodhi Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat

Location: Kochi, Kerala

Bodhi Yoga Retreat is an ashram that offers students a 10-day yoga retreat that includes daily cleansing Kundalini poses, yoga and meditation, and Ayurvedic treatments. Here, students receive personal recommendations from an Ayurvedic doctor on the ideal diet and exercise for your body's needs.

For travelers who are looking for a yoga experience that is combined with a more relaxed schedule and a vacation atmosphere, then here are some great recommendations for yoga holidays to try:

1. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat

Location: Mandrem, Goa

Goa is the perfect place to go to combine yoga and meditation with a relaxing beach holiday. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat is located on Mandrem Beach and is surrounded by tropical gardens.

Ashiyana is not a yoga ashram, but rather a beautiful boutique resort that includes a swimming pool, comfortable rooms, and a restaurant that offers great-tasting and healthy food.

Besides yoga, you can also participate in many spiritual classes and workshops or spend some time getting massages at the spa.

2. Little Cove Yoga Holiday Retreat

Location: Cola, Goa

Little Cove Yoga Holiday Retreat is located on the secluded Cola Beach in Goa and is surrounded by a peaceful palm grove. This retreat is special because the classes here are taught by an Indian Yogi who has a diploma in Ashtanga yoga.

The retreat offers two beachfront yoga classes a day, organic vegetarian meals, a complimentary cooking class, and some Ayurvedic treatment options.

3. Namaste Ayurvedic Wellness Centre

Location: Chalakudy Village, Kerala

Located in Chalakudy Village in the Western Ghat Mountains, Namaste Ayurvedic Wellness Centre is the perfect place to escape for some yoga, spiritual exploration, and healing.

This resort welcomes all yoga-lovers whether they are beginner or advanced and offers meditation and yoga courses, a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, herbal baths and massages, and delicious Keralan vegetarian food.

4. Ananda in the Himalayas

Location: Narendra Nagar, Uttarakhand

Ananda is a great choice for travelers who are looking for luxury. Ananda consistently rates as one of the top luxury spas and yoga retreats in India because of its incredible service, classes, and comfort.

Ananda is located on 100 acres of land belonging to the palace estate of the local maharaja with accommodation that matches the princely and luxurious vibe. This resort offers yoga and meditation classes, luxurious massages, and aromatic spa baths.

What to Expect During a Yoga Retreat in India

Variety of Retreats and Ashrams: When you are trying to find the yoga retreat that matches your personal goals, you are likely to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. It is important to do a lot of research before making a final decision in order to ensure the retreat is the correct one for you and that it is also a legitimate yoga retreat.

What to Wear: Unlike yoga in the West, yoga in India is not about tight spandex pants and strappy sports bras. In India, you'll be more comfortable wearing loose long pants and a comfortable T-shirt. In serious ashrams, yoga pants may be considered inappropriate and will likely be uncomfortable.

Food: Because it fits with the principles of yoga, most yoga retreats serve fresh and organic vegetarian dishes. If you attend a serious yoga ashram, you can expect meals to be very simple but also nourishing for your body and mind.

Length of Retreat: Yoga retreats vary greatly in the length of their packages. Some of the more serious ashrams require that participants stay for at least one month. Other ashrams offer packages of 5 or 10 days. At yoga holiday resorts, there is often no requirement for how long you must stay.

Indian Travel Visa for Yoga Students

Almost everyone will need to apply for a visa in order to travel to India. People who come to India as a yoga student can apply for an Indian tourist visa. On the online tourist visa form, there is even an option to mark "studying yoga" under your reason for your trip.

We recommend applying for the Indian E-visa on the official website . It is also possible to get a visa on arrival, but E-visas often allow for easier planning and are less of a hassle at the airport.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Yoga started several years ago, during the ancient Vedic period in India. The South Asian art of yoga has stretched out to all corners of the modern world. The male yoga professionals are known as yogis and the female yoga professionals are known as yoginis.

Yoga is popular for its poses and postures, but they were not the main element of the yoga traditions in India. Fitness was not their primary goal. They instead focused on other practices such as increasing mental focus and dilate the spiritual energy using breathing methods. The tradition of fitness began to gain demand in the 19th century in the west. People gradually started getting interested in yoga in the 1920s and 1930s, first in India and later in the west.

To convey the yoga sessions to the public, they have come up with six branches of yoga namely Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Tantra Yoga. If you have a specific goal in mind, then choosing the branch will be easier.

There are many styles and types of yoga, all of which are authentic and helps to boost your physical wellbeing. The different types of yoga are Ashtanga Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Jivamukti Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Power Yoga, Sivananda, Viniyoga, Yin, Prenatal Yoga, and Restorative Yoga.

Yoga helps us in many ways. Practising yoga daily is very beneficial for everyone. Some of the benefits that yoga offers are it betters your flexibility, help you gain muscle strength, improves your posture, prevents joint breakdown, protects your spine, betters your bone health, increases your blood circulation, boosts immunity, drains your lymph, ups your heart rate, maintains normal blood pressure, and much more.

Yoga is safe when you are trained by a well-trained instructor. Beginners should avoid difficult techniques and extreme poses. Also, if anyone has an on-going medical condition such as glaucoma, sciatica, or high blood pressure, or if anyone is pregnant, they should talk to their trainers before practising yoga as they may need to avoid some poses.
