Bali has a deep history of imperial, colonial, and independent rule that spans back to prehistoric populations on the island. Bali was ruled for many years by the Javanese Majapahit Empire, and in more recent times, colonized by the Dutch. Indonesia became independent in the middle of the 20th century and Bali is now one of its most famous vacation spots.

As an island that’s lured artistic and creative types for decades, Bali offers plenty of shopping opportunities. Shop at the Mertha Segara Samuh Art Market for hand-made souvenirs with bright colored tapestries and Hindu-inspired iconography available at practically any of the market’s stalls. Visit the Bali Collection complex for a more upscale experience, complete with dining and entertainment options to accompany you as you shop. Handmade jewelry, leather purses, natural products, beachwear, sarongs, batiks, and paintings are all great souvenirs of the island.

How can I get around Bali?

The easiest and most convenient way to get around the island on your Bali cruise is by private car or a metered taxi known as a “Bluebird”. Central tourist areas of Benoa such as Nusa Dua are walkable, but in the humidity of the tropics, you may find car transport more comfortable and convenient. If you’re in a group, you can ride with a private minivan (known as Bemo) service, or book larger shuttles and buses to accommodate more people.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The local currency in Bali is the Indonesian rupiah, and ATMs are abundant around both the main city center and surrounding beaches. Try to pay with cash when you can, and be careful when using a credit card at smaller stores, as they may not accept them. Tipping is not customary in Benoa, however, tour guides and restaurant workers are always grateful for a polite gratuity.
