Boston Logan International Airport

Boston’s Logan Airport has a bad reputation for being confusing for those who live outside of the city, but ever since the Big Dig construction extended I-90 to the airport, it’s been much easier. This guide will give you everything you need to know about getting there, parking options, how to best pick up and drop off passengers, and amenities once you get inside.

How to Get There

There are many ways to get to Logan Airport , and it all comes down to your personal preference. You can drive, take a bus or limo service, or use public transportation.

If you’re driving from the west or south, take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90 East) – referred to as the “Mass Pike” by locals – to exit 26. From northern points, take Route I-93 South to exit 24B and follow signs to Logan Airport.

Another option is taking Boston’s public transportation via the MBTA Blue Line Subway and Silver Line Bus from Downtown Boston. There’s also the MBTA Commuter Boat that leaves from Hull, just south of the city. For complete directions from any direction, click here .

Those living or staying outside of the city may prefer the Logan Express as transportation to the airport. There are full-service bus terminals with parking in Braintree, Framingham, Woburn and Peabody. You’ll only pay $7 a day for parking, and these buses will take you to any terminal at Logan Airport. Travel time is about 30-45 minutes, and you’ll want to allow yourself some extra time to account for any traffic that could be hit during transit.

If you are even further north or south, look for other bus transportation services. For example, Portsmouth, NH has C&J Bus line that many people enjoy taking advantage of. Other bus and limo services can be found here .

Leaving the airport: If you're leaving the airport, and you take the Silver Line from Logan Airport into the city to South Station, your transit is free. Upon arriving at South Station, you can get to many different destinations in and around the city via the Commuter Rail, Amtrak and Bus and the MBTA Red Line. Another option is to take the Blue Line, which will connect you to the Orange Line at State Street Station. This is the best way to access parts of the city including Back Bay, Fenway Park and Boston University.

Layout, Terminals, and Airlines

If you look at the interactive map , or if you’ve driven through Logan Airport many times before, you’ll see that it’s one big loop. As you drive through, make sure you pay attention to the signs, as the loops can get a bit confusing – especially if you’re driving around killing time as you wait for someone to arrive – and before you know it you’ll be heading for the exit instead of the terminal you’re looking for.

Logan Airport has flights going all over the country and world regularly. Find a full list of direct international destinations here . And its many destinations means you’ll also find most major airlines at Logan Airport. Below is a breakdown of the airlines by terminal, but keep in mind that you should always check your flight terminal before you head to the airport, as there may be cases that there are changes.

Terminal A:

  • Delta (Terminal E for International arrivals)

Terminal B:

  • American Airlines
  • Boutique Air

Terminal C:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • JetBlue (Terminal E for International Arrivals)
  • TAP Air Portugal (Terminal E for International Arrivals)

Terminal E – International:

  • Azores Airlines (SATA)
  • British Airways
  • Cabo Verde Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Copa Airlines
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • Primera Air
  • Qatar Airways
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Sun Country Airlines
  • Tap Air Portugal
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Parking Options

There are plenty of parking options at and around Logan Airport for different lengths of stay, proximity to the terminals, and price points.

Most convenient is the Central Parking Garage, which is exactly as it sounds, central to Terminals A, B, C, and E and can be accessed through covered walkways as you head to and from flights. When you enter the parking garage, look out for signs to your terminal to ensure that you’re parking in the best spot. Central Parking Garage costs vary depending on the length of your stay, with daily rates at $35.

There are also a few other parking lots available for the same $35 a day rate, including the Terminal B Garage and Terminal E Parking Lots. Of course, these options are best for those traveling through these terminals.

The Economy Parking Lot starts at $26 a day and offers free shuttle bus service to all terminals, which come every 15-20 minutes and operate 24 hours a day. This is the most budget-friendly option at Logan Airport. The two-deck garage has more than 2,700 spaces and can be found at Service Road and Prescott Street. You can also follow the signs for Economy Parking as you drive through the roadway that takes you to the terminals.

There will be times where various garages and lots are filled, but you can check ahead on the parking conditions page for details on overflow lots, including driving directions to help you get there. If you’ll be parking at Logan Airport several times a year, you may want to check out the Parking PASSport Gold program, which is the airport’s premium guaranteed parking.

For all the above parking options, there are complimentary services available to those parking here, including assistance if you lose your car or need a jumpstart or air in your tires.

If you prefer to save some money but sacrifice a little convenience, there are park and fly options located off the airport’s property. One example of this is Park, Shuttle & Fly, which costs $25 a day.

Drop-Offs and Pick-Ups

For those visiting Logan Airport to simply pick someone up, head to the arrivals level of the appropriate terminal. And to drop someone off, drive up to the terminal for a brief unload and goodbye. Keep in mind that curbside parking isn’t allowed, and if you stop for more than a few minutes, law enforcement will make you move along.

The Cell Phone Lot is the best place to wait if you're too early to pick up your passenger. It’s just a few minutes away from the terminals, located at Hotel Drive and Service Road, near the airport Gulf Station.

You can also choose to use any of the Logan parking lots and garages for short-term parking if you’ll be at the airport for less than a day and you want to walk in to say goodbye or find the person you're picking up. Prices vary depending on the lot.

Dining Options

There are plenty of food options both pre- and post-security, no matter what terminal or gate you’re traveling through. These range from spots to grab a quick coffee and breakfast sandwich, like Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, to sit-down meals to get a full meal and drink before your flight, such as Legal Sea Foods or Boston Beer Works.

  • Terminal A: Boston Bruins Bar, Currito, La Baguette Marche, La Baguette Marche Express, Market Kitchen, Friendly's, Dunkin' Donuts, Wendy's, Legal's Test Kitchen, Vino Volo, Harpoon Tap Room, Auntie Anne's, Starbucks, Sbarro, Fresh City

  • Terminal E: Dunkin' Donuts, Vineyard Grille, Stephanie's, Legal Sea Foods, Durgin Park, Vino Volo, Burger King, Starbucks, Sbarro, Dine Boston Restaurant, Dine Boston Cafe

Facilities and Amenities

Aside from your usual airport amenities, like much-needed free Wi-Fi, Logan Airport does have a few amenities on-site that you may want to check out.

If you’re traveling with kids, there are play areas throughout the airport. You’ll also find art exhibits and even a spa, both of which come in handy on a long layover or when your flight is delayed.

Be sure to check out the Boston Logan International Airport 9/11 Memorial, which honors the victims of September 11, 2001. This is open 24 hours a day, so you can stop by anytime.

For those looking to reflect and pray, there is also a non-denominational chapel called Our Lady of the Airways that airport staff and travelers can visit.

Once you land, you can find all car rental companies in the Rental Car Center. Just look for the signs, which are easy to spot as you exit the terminal. You’ll also see signs for ride-sharing services and taxis.

Nearby Hotels

While Logan Airport is close to the city of Boston, it’s technically located in East Boston. If you have an early flight or overnight layover, you may want to stay at a nearby hotel. The closest options, both located right on the airport’s property, are the Hilton Boston Logan Airport and the Hyatt Harborside .

Logan Airport travel tips

To reduce traffic congestion during tunnel closures, MassDOT encourages those traveling to or from Logan Airport to leave their cars at home and explore Massport's list of transportation options to and from Logan, which include: the Blue Line or Silver Line , the Logan Express , the Logan Water Taxi , or the Hingham/Hull Ferry .

Vehicles leaving Logan Airport should be aware of ongoing traffic impacts during the Sumner Tunnel closures. Periodically, Massport will close the ramp connecting the airport to the Ted Williams Tunnel and re-direct traffic to minimize the backup on the mainline of I-90. Additionally, vehicles traveling on Route 1A/I-90 westbound towards Ted Williams Tunnel may see one less through lane on I-90 westbound. During some peak traffic periods, one lane is converted to a merge lane to help vehicles leaving Logan Airport to freely join the I-90 mainline. While these changes do not eliminate congestion, they are implemented in an effort to balance traffic volumes during closures of the Sumner Tunnel and provide safer driving conditions inside the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Detour options

In coordination with local agencies and emergency services, the following detours were determined as the most efficient options to divert traffic away from the Sumner Tunnel while it is closed. When possible, it is highly encouraged to utilize public transit options.

Drivers from East Boston seeking to reach the Downtown Boston area will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel via Bennington Street and onto I-93.

Boston Logan Airport often gets a bad rap due to the traffic guests face in driving to the airport, as well as the parking fees and flight delays. But, I actually love flying through Logan International Airport. It offers lots of different airlines and flight destinations, making it easier to get flight deals.

If you are visiting Boston , Logan is also fairly convenient to get through on the Mass Pike. This improved greatly with the infamous Big Dig. Whether you are flying to Logan on your vacation, or using the airport as your home origin, here’s our complete guide to Boston Logan Airport.

Logan Airport Terminals

If you are flying through Logan, or are beginning or ending your journey there, you’ll need to know about the Logan Airport terminals. There are three domestic terminals and one international terminal. All offer different amenities and restaurants, but they are all fairly modern.

In true Massachusetts fashion, there’s no Terminal D at Boston Logan International Airport. In the past, there was a Terminal D, but its gates were moved over to Terminal E and Terminal C (which are connected). The letters for all terminals remained the same, however.

Terminal A at Logan Airport

When I first started flying out of Logan, Terminal A was closed and was being renovated. It opened in 2005 as primarily a Delta terminal. Although that was 13 years ago, the terminal does still feels modern and new. WestJet also operates out of this terminal.

Terminal A has a bit of an unusual shape. Once you go through security, you’ll reach a concourse with a series of gates. However, some gates are on the other side of the terminal, and you’ll need to go down a large escalator, across on a moving sidewalk, and then back up on another escalator.

It can take up quite a bit of time to do that, and you won’t want to travel between areas. So, if you want to eat at any of the restaurants, you’ll want to make a plan based on where your gate is located. It’s best not to go back and forth.

Amenities at terminal A include a kids’ play area “Kidport”, currency exchange, and shoe shine. There are also some shops, including Tumi, Tech on the GO, and several newsstands.

Restaurants in the terminal are Alta Strada, Harpoon Tap Room, and Berkshire Farms Market. There are also some food court-style counters including Currito, Sbarro, and Friendly’s. Seating is fairly limited for these restaurants, but you can always take things to eat by your gate.

Terminal B is, in my option, the most frustrating of the terminals at Logan. If you are being dropped off at the airport, you’ll want to know exactly what gate your flight is leaving from. There are two separate areas, and you’ll want to make sure you are going to the right door. Airlines leaving from Terminal B include American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest, Alaska Airlines, Boutique Airlines, Air Canada, and Spirit.

There’s also a small Air Canada area with its own security. It’s important to note that there are almost no amenities beyond a bathroom and a small concession booth in this area once you pass through TSA. If you are planning to eat before your flight, you’ll want to do that before you pass security.

One time, when I was flying Air Canada, I arrived nice and early for a full sit-down breakfast and was very disappointed with the limited options.

There are lots of different amenities located in this terminal otherwise. Restaurants at Logan Airport Terminal B include Temazcal, Lucca, Legal Sea Food, OTTO, and Stephanies. There are also some counter-style restaurants, including Peet’s Coffee, Dunkin Donuts, and W Pizza. For grab-and-go food, there’s a Berkshire Farms Market that also has a coffee counter and some hot food. It’s a great option for quick, healthy food.

Other amenities include a shoeshine, American and United clubs, a KidPort kids’ play area, and a currency exchange. Vineyard Vines, TUMI, Fifth and Sunset, and several newsstands are among the shops that you’ll find in the terminal.

I find myself spending most of my time in Terminal C because I typically try to fly JetBlue whenever I can. In addition to JetBlue, Terminal C is also home to TAP Portugal, Aer Lingus, and Cape Air. JetBlue definitely has the largest presence at the terminal, however.

Because of a fairly recent renovation, I find Terminal C to have the best layout and amenities. It does, however, also seem to have the longest security lines. This can vary of course, by day, but be prepared.

There are a number of restaurants in the terminal, both before and after security. You’ll find a Legal Sea Foods, Wahlburgers, Mija, Shojo Santarpios, Davios, and Boston Beer Works after security. There are also some counter service and grab-and-go locations, including Dunkin Donuts, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Starbucks, Camden Food Company, and Starbucks.

The shopping in Terminal C is probably the best at the airport. There are several specialty shops including Natalie’s Candy Jar, New England Collections, and Travel + Leisure, along with several newsstands and gift shops.

Amenities at Logan Airport’s Terminal C include a chapel, hair salon (before security), KidPort kids’ playspace, a shoeshine, a USO lounge, and “The Lounge”. JetBlue doesn’t offer a lounge specifically for their passengers, but those with Priority Pass access can get into The Lounge (sometimes you’ll have to go on a waiting list). Day passes are also offered.

Boston at Terminal E

Terminal E is the International terminal at Logan Airport. Not every international flight departs from this terminal – so check your airline for terminal information. In addition, some domestic flights leave from Terminal E. For instance, Frontier flies out of Terminal E.

Most international flights will arrive at Terminal E unless you go through US customs at the foreign airport you depart from (I’ve done this in Toronto and Nassau Bahamas in the past).

When leaving from Terminal E, it’s important to note that they don’t offer TSA PreCheck at this terminal. Pack your bags knowing that you’ll need to remove your liquids and electronics (keeping in mind that TSA rules are always subject to change), even if you are enrolled in TSA PreCheck.

When flying on Frontier, I was able to go through security without taking off my shoes. This was because I had TSA Precheck. But keep in mind you’ll still have to remove items from your bag and will need to wait in the regular line.

If you are arriving at Terminal E, and need to go through customs, it’s a pretty streamlined process. There are separate kiosks for those with Global Entry , and Mobile Passport is also accepted. I highly recommend Mobile Passport if you don’t have Global Entry – it’s free to use.

Restaurants at Terminal E include Vino Volo, Durgin Park, Legal Sea Foods, Monica’s Mercato, and Vineyard Grille. There’s also a Starbucks, Sbarro, Burger King, and Fuel America.

I’ve found that sometimes the terminal seems empty, while other times it’s very crowded. Because of the nature of international flights, evenings are typically the busiest in Terminal E.

There are also several shops in the terminal. These include a few duty-free shops and two newsstands.

The terminal offers several different airline premium lounges as well as currency exchange. If you are visiting the airport just for your Global Entry appointment, you’ll find that office in Terminal E before security. Terminal E is attached to Terminal C and you can easily walk between the two.

The whole airport offers free WiFi that is fairly reliable. The amount of outlets/plugs available really varies by gate. Some have plenty available, while others don’t have many at all. Signage to the gates, ticketing areas, and baggage claim are pretty clear throughout the airport.

A new app, called AtYourGate, offers retail and food delivery right to your gate. I haven’t used this yet, but it’s a great option if you have family members who are looking for different food.

Logan Airport Parking

Parking at Logan International Airport is not always a great experience. It’s expensive, and sometimes the central parking garage can be full especially midweek. If you are planning on parking, it’s always a good idea to go early.

The Central Parking Garage services all of the terminals and is the most central to Terminals A and C. Parking can also be reserved in advance.

There’s also a separate parking garage for Terminal B, as well as a lot for Terminal E. While the Central Parking Garage can be used for those terminals, you’ll have these additional options.

There’s also economy parking available. This can be used if you want to save money, or if the Central Parking Garage is full. It’s a bit further away, and you’ll need to take a shuttle bus to get to and from the economy garage.

For an even better price, look into AirportParking.com , where you can reserve off-property parking. Keep in mind that these are independent lots and maybe a distance away from the actual airport. Plan accordingly.

Picking someone up from the airport? There’s a cell phone lot that you can wait in until you get the call that your friend/family member is ready to be picked up. There are also dedicated rideshare lots if you are taking Uber/Lyft. These have recently changed, so keep an eye on the signage.

Getting to and from Logan International Airport

If you don’t want to drive, there are a number of different ways that you can get to the airport. My favorite is the Logan Express – a bus that travels between several Boston area communities and Logan Airport. These stations are in Framingham, Peabody, Braintree, Woburn, and Boston’s Back Bay. Check the website for the schedules and parking information at those locations. I find Logan Express to be very convenient.

The MBTA also has airport transportation on the Blue Line and the Silver Line. The airport has a free bus that goes to the Blue Line Airport Station, which then goes to Downtown Boston.

The Silver Line SL1 is free to Boston’s South Station and stops at each terminal. From South Station, you can transfer to the Red Line.

There are also other bus services that go to and from Logan Airport from areas as far as New Hampshire. These include the Plymouth & Brockton bus line, Peter Pan, Concord Coach, as well as other buses. Check with those individually for rates and schedules.

Of course, you can also take private cars, limo services, Uber, Lyft, and taxis to the airport. There are drop off locations at all terminals in the departures area.

Logan Airport Car Rental

If you are planning to rent a car once you land in Boston, you’ll have plenty of options. There’s a relatively new Rental Car Center building, which is located a short distance away. A shuttle bus is available right to the center. You’ll find most major rental car companies at the facility.

Logan Airport Hotels

Want to stay near Boston’s Logan Airport? There are lots of hotel options in the area. The Hilton Boston Logan Airport is the most convenient. It’s connected to all of the airport terminals through a sky bridge, and a shuttle is also available. We stayed there on our honeymoon before an early morning flight, and we loved the hotel. It’s very comfortable.

There’s also the Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor . This hotel isn’t connected via sky bridge but does have a complimentary shuttle. It’s also convenient because it’s located on airline property. I haven’t had the opportunity to stay there yet, but I’d like to.

There are other chain hotels in the area that are very close to the airport. These aren’t on airport property but are pretty convenient. Some of these also offer park-and-fly services where you can stay at the hotel before your trip and park during your trip. Inquire specifically about that service when you book. Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) handled 42 million passengers in 2019, with almost 10% of that traffic coming from international flights.

For such a busy airport, it’s not that big, covering just 1,700 acres (the second-smallest footprint of the 20 busiest U.S. airports).

BOS is a transatlantic hub for Delta Air Lines and a focus city for JetBlue.

Boston Logan International Airport consists of 4 terminals — A, B, C, and E — which are situated at the north, south, and east points of the airport.

A loop leads off from I-90, providing vehicle access to all of the terminals and parking garages that are located opposite the terminals.

The terminals are all connected by walkways, some within the secure area and some outside of the secure area.

Level 2 — Ticketing and Gates

BOS Terminal A Ticketing

Delta Air Lines and WestJet operate flights at Terminal A from both the main terminal and a satellite concourse connected to the main terminal by an underground walkway.

Terminal A’s main building has 11 gates numbered A1 to A11, a few shops and restaurants, and a Delta Sky Club.

Satellite  Concourse

BOS Terminal A Concourse

The satellite terminal is accessible through a long underground tunnel with moving walkways. The satellite terminal has 10 gates numbered A13 to A22.

The concourse has a good selection of shops and restaurants mostly located at the entrance of the concourse, including a Starbucks and duty-free store, and a Delta Sky Club can be found before reaching gate A18.

Level 1 — Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation

BOS Terminal A Baggage

Terminal A arrivals are on the lower level with access to ground transportation outside.

Level 2 — Check-in and Gates

BOS Terminal B Departures

Terminal B operates domestic flights only and has a U-shaped layout with parking inside of the U and departure gates around the outside.

Terminal B has 39 gates numbered B1 to B12, B14 to B31, B31A, B32 to B35, B35A, and B36 to B40. The terminal has 2 security checkpoints depending on whether passengers are departing from the north or south side.

An American Airlines Admirals Club is based on the south side of the terminal and a United Club is on the northeast side. The Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club is located near gates B39 and B40. Both sides have a good selection of shops and restaurants, including 2 Legal Sea Foods, 3 Starbucks, and 3 Dunkin’.

Ground transportation is available on the lower level, outside of both the north and south sides of the terminal. Some services are curbside and others require passengers to use the crossing into the central reservation.

BOS Terminal C Departures

Terminal C operates domestic and international flights and is an X shape, with the ticketing area in the center and departure gates along the 4 legs.

Terminal C has 31 gates numbered C8 to C12, C14 to C34, C36, and E1, E1A, E2, and E3. Shops and restaurants are located all over Terminal C departures, so you won’t need to stray far to grab a bite before your flight, and The Lounge is located in the northwest leg.

BOS Terminal C Arrivals

Arrivals are on the lower level of Terminal C, as well as access to ground transportation services.

Levels 2 and 3 — Ticketing and Gates

Terminal E Level 2 at Boston Logan International Airport

Terminal E is the main international terminal at BOS.

Ticketing is located on level 3 of Terminal E, along with departure gates E4 to E12. The other 4 gates — E1, E1A, E2, and E3 — are located on the second level in the connector to Terminal C.

Terminals B and E also have parking garages that are located outside of each terminal.

Rates are the same across these 3 parking garages:

Although passenger numbers at BOS have yet to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels, this major Massachusetts airport has seen steady passenger traffic increases in 2021 and 2022.

Construction work has started on various projects, though disruption has been minimal. However, BOS warns that passengers will experience disruption over the next 5 years as more significant enhancements are made. This will include projects such as building an airside connection between Terminals B and C, expanding Terminal E, and adding an additional 5,000 parking spaces.

Don't drive to Logan airport this summer, Massport warns, citing traffic chaos

Beginning july 5 for 8 straight weeks, the sumner tunnel will be closed for construction, by jeff saperstone • published june 8, 2023 • updated on june 8, 2023 at 1:25 pm.

Do not drive your car to Logan Airport this summer. That’s the message from Massport ahead of a busy travel season. Increased air travel combined with the closure of the Sumner Tunnel is expected to create travel chaos.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, Logan saw more than 314,000 passengers go through TSA checkpoints. That’s up more than 26,000 from last year.

Asked if it will be one of the busiest summers in a long time, Ed Freni, Massport Director of Aviation said, “I think it'll be very close. Yeah, it will be very close.”

Get Boston local news, weather forecasts, lifestyle and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC Boston’s newsletters.

And while it’s expected to be hectic inside Logan Airport, it’s what’s happening outside that could lead to travel gridlock before you even step foot into the terminal.

“This year is going to be particularly unique because of the closure of the Sumner Tunnel,” said Freni.

Sign up for our Breaking newsletter to get the most urgent news stories in your inbox.

Beginning July 5 for 8 straight weeks, the Sumner will be closed for construction and traffic going to and from Logan will be very heavy.

“You’ve got to get in the zone, you got to get ready and prepare,” said Freni. “It'll make it a lot easier for everybody.”

Massport is so concerned, they’re telling travelers not to drive themselves to the airport and give yourself an extra two hours on top of the usual timeframe. The agency is even taking out full page newspaper ads telling people to use Logan Express busses, the Blue or Silver Lines or ferries.

“Let's just say I think it's going to get more hectic and and so, yeah, I'm glad we came early and yeah, the key is being organized, especially traveling with family,” said one traveler.

If you have to drive you may be diverted north up Route 1A as Massachusetts State Police work to keep the roads around the airport clear. Massport officials have been doing run-throughs to make sure traffic can run smoothly. But with air travel taking off to new post pandemic heights and the Sumner Tunnel closing, it’s creating a perfect storm around the airport this summer.

“We know what to do,” said Freni. “We're working with MassDOT to make sure we do all the right things to keep everybody safe and sound.”

Cracked windshield on airplane prompts emergency diversion to Logan Airport

Passengers were delayed on their international flight Wednesday night when their plane sustained a cracked windshield, according to authorities.

Massachusetts State Police say around 9:46 p.m., an American Airlines flight was diverted to Logan Airport due to a crack in the plane’s windshield. An alert 2 emergency was called and at 10:14 p.m., the flight landed without incident.

The plane was taxied to the gate under its own power.

In a statement, American Airlines said:

“On Feb. 28, American Airlines flight 94 with service from New York (JFK) to Madrid (MAD) diverted to Boston (BOS) due to a maintenance issue. The flight landed safely and the aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. Customers will re-depart for MAD tomorrow on a replacement aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.”

“It was kind of scary, the flight was very shakey and when they said the windshield cracked I got a bit scared,” one passenger said.

Passengers were told they would be put up in hotel rooms overnight and receive food vouchers, according to airline reps. They will continue their travel at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Subscriber only, fort point shelter to serve migrants resurfacing at boston’s logan airport, healey blasted for mismanagement.

Migrant families were seen sleeping overnight at Logan Airport in January. The issue has resurfaced, and a new overflow shelter in the Seaport will host families eligible for emergency assistance. (Herald file photo)

A Fort Point office building opening this week as an overflow shelter site for migrants will put emphasis on preventing families from “sleeping at Logan Airport,” according to its operator, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.

The new 80-bed safety-net site in the ritzy Seaport neighborhood will be the second facility to open this year in Boston for migrant families that have taken refuge at the airport, weeks after the state converted a Roxbury recreation center into a shelter .

A conservative fiscal group says the situation is illuminating how the Healey administration has mismanaged the migrant crisis and is calling on the governor and top lawmakers to consider reforms to the state’s overburdened emergency assistance shelter system.

“Logan airport should be a secure location for people to travel, not a place for the Healey administration to use as temporary migrant housing,” said Paul Diego Craney, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance. “The Governor may be holding on to the wishful thinking that the migrant situation is under control, but it’s not.”

“Legislative leaders and our Governor refuse to reform the policies that make Massachusetts a migrant magnet and instead throw taxpayer money at the problem,” Craney added.

Craney’s statement came after a reporter for WCVB Channel 5 posted photos on X, formerly Twitter, of migrant families sleeping on the floor in Terminal E at Logan Airport early Thursday morning.

Gov. Maura Healey turned to the state-operated Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex in Roxbury in late January to house migrant families that had been staying overnight at Logan, but the facility quickly neared its 400-person capacity a week after its opening .

The United Way has said a goal of the Fort Point shelter is to “prevent families from sleeping at Logan Airport, train stations, and other places not meant for human habitation.”

Only families who are documented are eligible for the state’s emergency assistance shelter system, according to the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities.

Families have been informed local hospitals and the airport are not shelters.

The Massachusetts Port Authority, which owns Logan, reported last November that roughly 20 to 25 migrants arriving daily had started to camp out in a baggage claim and elsewhere.

That number grew sharply, with 100 migrants sleeping overnight in Terminal E — the airport’s primary international terminal — in late January.

“We continue to see migrants at the airport,” Massport spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan said in a statement. “They come to Logan a number of ways — some fly in, but the majority do not. They also arrive at Logan at all hours.”

Gov. Maura Healey on Thursday said she is open to reforming the state-run shelter system, to address capacity concerns such as imposing residency requirements or time limits.

The system has been maxed out at the 7,500 family limit for months.

The House is considering a supplemental budget that taps $873 million in surplus dollars from the pandemic to plug a $224 million shelter budget gap this fiscal year and pay down costs in the next, when spending is expected to approach $1 billion.

“It’s an incredibly frustrating situation,” Healey said. “I talked to other governors who are fed up with Congress, who are fed up with federal inaction.”

Boston Logan International Airport in line for $12M from feds to upgrade control tower

B oston Logan International Airport is in line to receive $12 million from the Biden administration to fund the expansion and renovation of the existing air traffic control tower with new equipment and facilities, the White House announced Thursday morning.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Logan Airport is one of more than 100 airports across 44 states slated to receive a portion of $970 million in grants for terminal projects. The White House pitched the dollars as a way to boost air travel during a turbulent time for the industry.

“Another part of that better travel experience is to invest in our physical infrastructure, to improve the airports that represent the beginning and end of every passenger’s journey, and airports that are a key economic engine for workers who show up there every day, and communities that rely on those airports to sustain their connectedness and their competitiveness,” Buttigieg said at a briefing ahead of the announcement.

The $12 million for Logan will fund phase one of a two-part project to rework the existing airport traffic control tower, according to the White House. That includes the construction of a new space to accommodate existing and new Federal Aviation Administration equipment, technical operations, a flight simulator, and a contract weather observer.

“We’re excited about … the bigger project there in Boston,” Buttigieg said of the grant dollars for Massachusetts.

The money is on top of the $62 million Biden shuttled to Logan for the Terminal E overhaul that was completed late last year. That project added four international gates, a 500,000 square-foot addition to the terminal, and upgraded emergency efficiency measures.

Improvements made as part of the grants released Thursday include wider concourses, better baggage systems, additional gates, and ensuring airports meet accessibility requirements, according to the White House.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Natalie Quillian said airport investments will help meet the growing demand for air travel and builds on the dollars handed out through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Biden signed in November 2021.

“As of today, we have now announced $3 billion to modernize airport terminals across the country. Some of these projects are already complete, like the upgrades to expand Terminal E at Boston Logan International Airport, and many more projects are underway,” she said at the briefing.

The Fort Lauderdale‐Hollywood International Airport will receive $50 million, the most of any of the 114 airports on tap to receive grant dollars, though it is far lower than the $145 million Florida officials requested.

The funds partially back a portion of a terminal connector project, which “will complete post-security connectivity between all terminals in the airport,” the White House said in a statement.

“The project consists of the construction of two connector walkways and modifications to the existing terminals including enhanced security checkpoints, a renovated bag hall, an expanded holdroom, and additional retail space,” the White House said.

BOSTON, MA - February 10: A plane takes off at Logan Airport on February 10, 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts

Meet the Boston native at the center of the Tuskegee Airmen mural at Logan Airport

An older man in a U.S. Army Air Force cap stands outside on a sunny day. He looks dignified and resolute.

This year, the world will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the massive military landing on the beaches of Normandy, France, that marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.

Boston native and veteran Enoch “Woody” Woodhouse plans to be there.

Sporting a dark, leather English High School letterman complete with an embroidered plane with a distinctive red tail , Woodhouse greeted a GBH News team in his high-rise apartment building near the Fenway on a chilly February morning.

“Incidentally, I was literally born across the street,” he quipped. “So, you might say I haven’t gone far in life.”

But, in his 97 years, Woodhouse has been a lawyer, an alum of Yale and Boston University , a husband, a father — and, one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. He was one of roughly 16,000 service members who served as the first Black aviators and support staff in U.S. military history.

Their contributions to the war effort — and to the world — have become more appreciated over the years.

But that appreciation has been far from constant. And as Woodhouse and the few other remaining members of the Tuskegee Airmen continue to share their stories of their service and the discrimination they encountered after, their lessons become more valuable and rare with each passing year.

A man looks seriously into a camera.

America at war

On Dec. 7, 1941, a Sunday, Woodhouse was on the way to church with his brother, mother and father, who was a preacher. What started as a typical start of the week at his congregation in Roxbury ended up being a date that would live in infamy.

“We were on our way to church and my mother said, ‘Boys, America is at war. I want you to serve your country,’” Woodhouse recalled of the hours after the Pearl Harbor attacks. “Can you imagine a Black woman saying that? All she had in the world were her two boys. And the pictures we grew up with [were] our people being lynched.”

As soon as he graduated from English High School in 1944, he signed up for the U.S. Army.

“I had my graduation diploma literally in hand,” he said. “This is why they called us the Greatest Generation. Because everybody served.”

Unlike everybody else who served, however, the Tuskegee Airmen, who were formed in 1941 , faced a slew of additional hurdles because of their race.

Larry Sargent is the vice president of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum in Detroit. He said some Airmen didn’t openly talk about their experiences.

He recalls stumbling upon the revelation from a great aunt that two of his cousins had served with the esteemed corps.

“I said, ‘Wait a minute. They came to the family reunion. But when we was growing up, 10, 11 years old ... why didn’t he never tell us that he was a Tuskegee Airman?’” Sargent recalled. “And she said, ‘Well, they felt bad because they served this country and the way they got treated abroad and back home when they came back, it hasn’t changed. So, they didn’t even talk about the situations they was in.’”

Beyond the usual indignities of segregation in the military, they also faced barriers like being barred from getting jobs as airline pilots when they got home. Then there were the cases of being completely scratched from history.

Fighting for their country, and for recognition

In 1949, the U.S. Air Force held the first-ever Fighter Gunnery Meet to name its “Top Guns” in the service — and a group of pilots from the Tuskegee Airmen won first place in the propeller aircraft category. But, mysteriously, the results officially listed the winners as “unknown” for years. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the results were properly recorded. Two years ago, the Air Force reaffirmed the accomplishment with a plaque at the U.S. Air Force Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.

It was in this climate that Woodhouse served as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen as a paymaster. When he received commission as an officer in 1946, he was the only Black member of his officer class. Usually, the class dinner would have been held at a hotel in town in San Antonio, Texas, but they went instead back to their base after they got their commissions. It wasn’t until later that his class president revealed why they didn’t go there to celebrate.

“Because it was me. They did not accept Black people in the hotel. Period,” Woodhouse said.

“I was with the finest men I’ve known in life, no matter what their race.” Enoch “Woody” Woodhouse, on serving with the Tuskegee Airmen

It wasn’t Woodhouse’s first time facing discrimination. Although he’s a proud English alum these days, Woodhouse had originally applied to attend the Boston Latin School at a time when Woodhouse said few Black students were enrolled at the prestigious school. While white acquaintances of the family got in, the Woodhouse family never got an acceptance letter.

His mother, he said, did not emphasize the role racism played in that snub.

“She never told me that,” Woodhouse said. “Why? She did not want me to feel a victim.”

It was a lesson that would stick with her son as he served a country that didn’t always love people like him back.

At the time, Woodhouse said he didn’t realize the significance of serving with the Airmen.

“Because we had nothing to compare ourselves with,” he said. “People asked me, ‘How does it feel in an all-Black unit with just nothing but Black people like yourself?’ I said, ‘I felt fine.’ Because I was with the finest men I’ve known in life, no matter what their race.”

A precious few remain

In total, the ranks of the Tuskegee Airmen totaled between 15,000 to 16,000 service members.

According to Frank Toland, the lead ranger at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama, only around 15 to 16 are still alive, as of his latest research from last year.

“What they saw — not only overseas, but what they saw and endured when they came back home. Nobody can tell those stories like they can.” Frank Toland, the lead ranger at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama

Woodhouse has made a point to keep in touch with what he referred to as Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen, or DOTAs, throughout the years. These days, their reunions are modest in number.

“Oh my God,” he said with a laugh. “We all meet in a phone booth.”

That makes preserving the story of the Airmen all the more crucial. But time has a way of making even the most important lessons forgotten.

“There’s some places where they, you mention the Tuskegee Airmen, even in the local area and they don’t [really] know what you’re talking about,” Toland said. That’s part of what makes preserving the legacy of the Airmen so important — especially while several remain alive and well.

“What they saw — not only overseas, but what they saw and endured when they came back home. Nobody can tell those stories like they can,” he said.

Here in New England, Mike Thornton, the curator at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, loses sleep contemplating how the toll of World War II is becoming an artifact of a bygone era, with fewer people like Woodhouse around to talk about its cost.

“And I always feel that, like, World War II is one of those very teachable moments that ... I’m not sure we can afford to refight that,” Thornton said.

An older man in his service jacket laughs in his apartment building's lounge.

Sharing his story

Most people know Enoch Woodhouse II by his nickname, “Woody.” But his birth name, which he shares with his father, is profound.

The name is taken from the Book of Genesis, where the man known as Enoch was a man of great faith. Faith so great that it is written he was taken away by God, without having to experience death. He was 365 years old.

Woodhouse has already experienced enough spectacular moments to fill a lifetime three or four times over. His face adorns a mural at Logan Airport, and he's known and admired in his community. The near-centenarian keeps a busy schedule, making appearances in his role as a veteran Tuskegee Airman.

Like a prophet of old, he knows the most important gifts he can leave behind are his wisdom and his story.

While there may be few like him left, Woodhouse reflects more on the state of the country than simply how many Airmen remain.

“I go by the climate in America,” he said. “What did we fight for? What did we die for?”

A mural depicts Woody as a young and older man, collaged together with depictions of service medals, a P-51 plane, and Woody's signature.

Facial Recognition: Coming Soon to an Airport Near You

Biometric technology is expanding at airports across the United States — and the world — and transforming the way we move through them, from checking a bag to boarding the plane.

An illustration shows a man looking straight into a large window at an airport, identified by a control tower and the tail of a jet, with various charts and electronic measurements projected around him.

By Christine Chung

For this story, I spoke with executives at airlines, government agencies, and companies specializing in biometric technology. I also visited Alaska Airlines’ headquarters in Seattle, and tested out Delta’s Digital ID at John F. Kennedy and La Guardia airports in New York.

On a recent Thursday morning in Queens, travelers streamed through the exterior doors of La Guardia Airport’s Terminal C. Some were bleary-eyed — most hefted briefcases — as they checked bags and made their way to the security screening lines.

It was business as usual, until some approached a line that was almost empty. One by one, they walked to a kiosk with an iPad affixed to it and had their photos taken, as a security officer stood by. Within seconds, each passenger’s image was matched to a photo from a government database, and the traveler was ushered past security into the deeper maze of the airport. No physical ID or boarding pass required.

Some travelers, despite previously opting into the program, still proffered identification, only for the officer to wave it away.

This passenger screening using facial recognition software and made available to select travelers at La Guardia by Delta Air Lines and the Transportation Security Administration, is just one example of how biometric technology, which uses an individual’s unique physical identifiers, like their face or their fingerprints, promises to transform the way we fly.

This year could be the “tipping point” for widespread biometrics use in air travel, said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst for Atmosphere Research . Time-consuming airport rituals like security screening, leaving your luggage at bag drop and even boarding a plane may soon only require your face, “helping to reduce waiting times and stress for travelers,” Mr. Harteveldt said.

In the United States, major airlines have increasingly invested in facial recognition technology as have government agencies in charge of aviation security. Overseas, a growing number of international airports are installing biometrics-enabled electronic gates and self-service kiosks at immigration and customs.

The technology’s adoption could mean enhanced security and faster processing for passengers, experts say. But it also raises concerns over privacy and ethics.

Dr. Morgan Klaus Scheuerman, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Colorado who studies the ethics of artificial intelligence and digital identity, said many questions have emerged about the use of biometrics at airports: How are the systems being trained and evaluated? Would opting out be considered a red flag? What if your documents don’t match your current appearance?

“I’m sure many people feel powerless to stop the trajectory,” Dr. Scheuerman said.

In the United States, bullish about the technology

The T.S.A., with more than 50,000 officers at nearly 430 airports in the United States, is the main federal agency ensuring the safety of the hundreds of millions of passengers who fly each year. Travelers who are determined to be “low-risk” can apply for T.S.A.’s PreCheck program, which offers expedited security screening at more than 200 domestic airports. PreCheck, which requires an in-person appointment to show documents and give fingerprints, and biometric verification by Clear, a private screening company, have helped to reduce the wait time for screening, but air travelers still must occasionally stand in long queues to get to their gates.

The T.S.A. has experimented with facial recognition technology since 2019. Screening verification currently offered at Denver and Los Angeles International Airports and some 30 other airports starts when a photo is taken of the traveler. Then facial recognition software is used to match the image to a physical scan of a license or passport. The photo is deleted shortly afterward, according to the agency. This process, which passengers can opt out of, will be available at some 400 more airports in the coming years, the agency said.

Melissa Conley, a T.S.A. executive director overseeing checkpoint technologies, said that biometric technology is better than human agents at matching faces rapidly and accurately.

“People are not good at matching faces. It’s just known,” Ms. Conley said. “Machines don’t get tired.”

The process still requires passengers to show their IDs. But the program being tried by Delta, called Delta Digital ID , changes that.

With Delta Digital ID , PreCheck travelers can use their faces in lieu of boarding passes and ID at both bag drop and security at La Guardia and four other airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport .

Facial recognition shaves more than a minute off bag drop, to roughly 30 seconds, and reduces the security interaction from 25 seconds to about 10 seconds, said Greg Forbes, Delta’s managing director of airport experience. While a “simple change,” the time savings add up, making the line noticeably faster, Mr. Forbes added.

“Anywhere that there’s PreCheck, I think, could benefit from Digital ID,” Mr. Forbes said.

Other airlines have begun similar experiments for PreCheck travelers: Those flying on American Airlines can use their faces to get through PreCheck screening at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and also to enter the airline’s lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. United Airlines allows PreCheck travelers to use their faces at bag drop counters at Chicago O’Hare International Airport; the airline is scheduled to bring this program to Los Angeles International Airport in March.

And Alaska Airlines plans to spend $2.5 billion over the next three years in upgrades, including new bag drop machines, in Seattle, Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Los Angeles and Anchorage. A machine will scan the traveler’s ID, match it to a photo, and then scan the printed bag tags. The new system, designed to move guests through the bag tagging and dropping process in less than five minutes (compared to around eight minutes now), will be in Portland in May.

Charu Jain, the airline’s senior vice president of innovation and merchandising, said that it felt like the right moment for Alaska because of improved technology and increasing passenger familiarity with facial recognition.

At the borders

The fastest growing use of facial recognition software at U.S. airports so far has been in security measures for entering and exiting the United States.

The growth stems from a 2001 congressional mandate , in the wake of 9/11, requiring the implementation of a system that would allow all travelers arriving and departing the United States to be identified using biometric technology.

Overseen by the Customs and Border Protection agency, the biometric system for those entering the United States is in place, and scanned 113 million entries at airports last year. For those leaving the country, the system is available at 49 airports, with the C.B.P. aiming to cover all airports with international departures by 2026.

Biometric entry is mandatory for foreign nationals. But biometric exit is currently optional for these travelers, while C.B.P. is making the system fully operational. At any border, the biometric process is optional for U.S. citizens, who can instead request a manual ID check.

Diane Sabatino, acting executive assistant commissioner for field operations at C.B.P., said that the system aims to improve security, but she acknowledged rising privacy concerns. Images of American citizens taken during the process are deleted within 12 hours, she said, but photos of foreign nationals are stored for up to 75 years .

“We are not scanning the crowd looking for people,” she said. “It’s certainly a privacy issue. We are never going to ask them to sacrifice privacy for convenience.”

Miami International Airport, the second busiest airport in the United States for international passengers last year, has one of the “largest deployments” of biometrics in the country, airport executives say. In a partnership with SITA , a global information technology provider for the air transport industry, the airport has installed the technology for departing passengers at 74 out of 134 gates and plans to cover the remaining gates by the end of this year, said Maurice Jenkins, chief innovation officer at Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

The contract with SITA costs $9 million, but Mr. Jenkins said that the new technology was increasing efficiency in the rest of the airport’s operations, such as fewer gate agents checking documents.

Document-free travel overseas

Experts believe the future of air travel is one where facial recognition will be used throughout the entire airport journey: bag drop, boarding, even entering lounges and purchasing items at retail stores within the airport. It may be so streamlined that security checkpoints could be eliminated, replaced instead by security “tunnels” that passengers walk through and have their identity confirmed simultaneously.

“This is the future,” said Dr. Sheldon Jacobson, a computer science professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who researches aviation security.

According to a recent report by SITA , in which 292 airlines and 382 airports around the world were surveyed, 70 percent of global airlines are expected to use some sort of biometric identification by 2026 and 90 percent of airports are currently investing in the technology.

More comprehensive experimentation has already landed at some airports abroad. Later this year, Singapore’s Changi Airport intends to go passport-free for departures ; all passengers, regardless of nationality, will be able use this system. At Frankfurt Airport in Germany, passengers can now use their face s from the time they check-in to boarding. The airport is installing biometric technology throughout its two terminals and making it available to all airlines.

In China, 74 airports — 86 percent of the country’s international airports — have biometric technology in place, according to a report released last month by the global market research company Euromonitor and the U.S. Travel Association . At Beijing Capital International Airport , the country’s busiest airport, travelers can use facial recognition throughout their entire journey, even to pay for items at duty-free shops.

But in the United States, according to the report, only about 36 percent of international airports have some biometric capabilities.

There are several reasons for the country’s lagging adoption, said Kevin McAleenan, the former acting secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and currently chief executive of Pangiam, a travel technology company. Simply, the United States has many airports and the immigration exit process here is different from other places.

At many airports overseas, the government controls immigration for departing travelers, allowing these airports to have a government-established biometric system.

In the United States, airlines, using C.B.P. passenger data , confirm the identities of travelers leaving the country.

Concerns over government surveillance

Biometrics use has already seeped into daily life. People unlock their phones with their faces. Shoppers can pay for groceries with their palms at Whole Foods .

But critics believe that the technology’s convenience fails to outweigh a high potential for abuse — from unfettered surveillance to unintended effects like perpetuating racial and gender discrimination.

Cody Venzke, senior policy counsel on privacy and technology at the American Civil Liberties Union, said the government had not yet shown a demonstrated need for facial recognition technology at airports and worried about a “nuclear scenario.”

“Facial recognition technology,” he said, could be “the foundation for a really robust and widespread government surveillance and tracking network.”

“That technology might be able to be used to track you automatically and surreptitiously, from place to place, as you go about your day, and create a really detailed mosaic about everything about your life,” Mr. Venzke said.

The A.C.L.U. supports a congressional bill, introduced last November, called the Traveler Privacy Protection Act . Listing concerns over security and racial discrimination , the bill would halt the T.S.A.’s ongoing facial recognition program, and require congressional authorization for the agency to resume it.

Ms. Conley, of the T.S.A., said that a stop in the agency’s biometrics efforts would “take us back years.”

For some travelers, facial recognition has already become a reliable tool. At J.F.K. on a recent afternoon, Brad Mossholder, 45, used Delta’s Digital ID line to breeze through the security screening at Terminal 4 and bypass a dozen travelers in the adjacent PreCheck lane.

He was flying from his home in New York to San Diego for his job in corporate retail, and as a frequent business traveler, has used facial recognition several times. The process is faster and easier overall, Mr. Mossholder said, and he wasn’t worried about privacy.

“Honestly, my photo is on LinkedIn, it’s on a million social media sites,” he said. “If you really wanted to see a picture of me, you could.”

A Spain-bound American Airlines flight from New York City made an emergency landing at Boston's Logan International Airport Wednesday night "due to a maintenance issue".

American Airlines Flight 94 took off from JFK Airport in New York City a little before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to FlightAware , and was headed to Madrid, Spain when it was diverted to Boston just two and half hours into the flight, landing at Logon Airport at 10:03 pm.

In a statement to USA TODAY, American Airlines said that the flight was diverted "due to a maintenance issue," and that it landed safely at Boston, where the "aircraft was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team."

CBS News, citing the Massachusetts State Police, reported that the flight was diverted because of a crack that appeared in the windshield. The state police did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for more information.

No one was injured in the incident and passengers on board the flight will re-depart for Madrid on a replacement aircraft, said American Airlines. The flight to Madrid is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EST Thursday from Boston, according to FlightAware.

Customers were forced to spend the night in Boston though the airlines provided hotel accommodations overnight.

The airlines also apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

"We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," said the statement.

Recent airplane incidents

Wednesday's incident is the latest in a string of incidents that has reignited the debate on airline safety, especially with jets manufactured by Boeing. The issue first came to the forefront when an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California, made a dramatic emergency landing on Jan. 5 after a piece of the fuselage burst off at 16,000 feet.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew onboard deplaned safely in Portland but the flight, which was operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet, highlighted safety concerns with many airlines grounding several of their Boeing jets .

The aircraft in Wednesday's incident was a Boeing 777-200 jet, according to FlightAware.

A cracked windshield forced an American Airlines flight to divert to Boston’s Logan Airport on Wednesday night, according to officials.

American Airlines flight 94 from New York to Madrid landed safely at the Boston airport after experiencing a "maintenance issue," the airline told Fox News Digital in a statement.

Massachusetts State Police said the flight was diverted around 9:45 p.m. due to a crack in the plane’s windshield. It was not immediately clear how the crack occurred.

"It was kind of scary, the flight was very shaky and when they said the windshield cracked I got a bit scared," one passenger told Boston 25 News.
