Morris Minor Traveller buyer’s guide

James Howe

By far the most commodious of all the passenger Minors, the Morris Minor Traveller is still a popular choice – but it’s not without its problems. Here’s how to buy one

Words: Paul Jackson

Launched in 1953 and running for an impressive eighteen years, the Traveller proved to be a crucial expansion of the best-selling Morris Minor range, with more than 215,000 examples of this distinctive woody-style estate being produced. The Traveller’s combination of basic reliability and a cavernous load area ensured it was a long-term hit for BMC. And on today’s classic scene, it remains one of the most useful load-carriers, soundly beating many of its contemporaries when it comes to all-round versatility.

As with its saloon stablemate, the Traveller was updated and enhanced over the years, from the original ‘cheese-grater grille’ Series II of 1953 and the ‘slatted grille’ of the following year, through to the 948cc Minor 1000 of 1956-62 and its 1098cc successor. The Minor 1000 Traveller is the most driver-friendly of the lot, with the 37bhp of the initial car being improved upon via the 1962-on version’s 48bhp (at 5100rpm). The very last Minor Traveller finally rolled off the line in April 1971, by which time its wood-framed rear end was viewed as something of an antiquity.

This much-loved Morris was (and still is) one of the most distinctive estate cars of its time, comprising the front end of a Minor saloon mated to a rear based on the standard floor pan, featuring a structural wooden framework, aluminium rear roof section, twin side-opening rear doors and a generous load area. But why did Morris choose to go the wood-framed route in the first place? There’s no doubt that the woody concept was popular on the other side of the Atlantic, and many a European designer was being influenced by American trends of the time.

The wood-framed idea also made production sense, however, for it was a material that was readily available just eight years after the end of World War II. Strength was an issue too, with the Traveller’s wooden roof cant rails bringing together a structure of impressive rigidity. Even better, the existing wood shop at the Morris Bodies plant was capable of taking on the task of putting together the timber framework, subsequently transported to the Minor production line at Cowley in complete form ready for final assembly of the finished vehicle. The downside of such a production process was its cost to BMC- despite being a successful, much-loved and long-lived car the Traveller effectively made no profit.

All of this is irrelevant to today’s buyer, of course, the kind of enthusiast who seeks a practical but entertaining classic. So, what should you check for if you’re in the market for a Minor Traveller?

morris minor traveller wood

The Traveller’s steel bodywork can obviously suffer from rot just as much as any Minor saloon. An all-original example will be a rare find, since the vast majority of today’s survivors have had some kind of restoration work carried out. The key is to make sure any such work has been done to a good standard, as there are plenty of tidy looking examples suffering from patched-up repairs underneath.

Areas to check include the sills, all box sections and the front crossmember that supports the rear ends of the torsion bars and jacking points. Floorpans can also suffer, so have a poke around everywhere and be on the look-out for patch repairs and any thick underseal that might be hiding corrosion or poor quality previous work. The good news, of course, is that replacement structural sections are readily available, from sills to complete floorpans; and prices are reasonable too, with front floorpans starting from around the £35 mark. You obviously need to factor in the cost of labour if you’re not capable of such major work yourself.

Outer panels can be just as rust-prone, so you’ll need to check the front wings (around the headlamps and down the rear edge) and the bottoms of the doors in particular. You have the advantage once again of excellent parts availability and competitive prices, with new front wings costs from around £215 each via Charles Ware’s Morris Minor Centre. The bolt-on wings could be hiding other issues, however, such as rotten inner wings and corroded A-pillars, so make sure you’re extra vigilant when inspecting any Minor.

It’s the rear end of the Traveller that provides the biggest challenges, with its ash frame being key to the car’s structural integrity. You need to be looking for signs of rot and/or filler, as well as any dark staining that is a sure sign of water having found its way into the wood. Some cars will have had localised repairs carried out, but checking the quality of the work is crucial. A good proportion of Travellers will have had their entire wooden frames replaced by now; but if the car you’re inspecting hasn’t, then it’s something you might need to work into your costings.

You may be lucky and find that only certain areas of wood need changing, for which you can buy brand new replacement sections from companies like Charles Ware’s Morris Minor Centre (morrisminor.org.uk), Traveller Timbers (travellertimbers.co.uk) and Woodies (morriswoodwork.co.uk). You’ll usually pay £1500 or so for a complete set of woodwork, including new rear door frames. Changing it is a major undertaking, however, and a specialist is likely to charge you at least as much again in labour.

Engine and gearbox

With the Minor Traveller being launched in 1953, all versions benefit from the A-Series engine that Morris adopted following the previous year’s creation of BMC (via the merging of Austin and the Nuffield Organisation). The A-Series is famously robust but can obviously wear when neglected or taken to a high mileage, one of the first signs being excessive noise caused by a worn timing chain.

You should check for plumes of blue smoke when you start the engine, as this is usually a sign of bore wear. And you need to check for any head gasket issues, as failure isn’t exactly rare, particularly at the rear of the engine; make sure there’s no sign of coolant in the oil and vice-versa, with any ‘mayonnaise’ on the dipstick and around the fuel filler being a cause for concern.

It’s common for an A-Series engine to leak oil, most often from the rear crankshaft seal. If it’s not excessive, it’s probably something you can live with. There are specialists who will rebuild any A-Series engine (either on an exchange basis or using your own engine if you want to keep it ‘numbers matching’), but you can expect a bill of around £1500.

The four-speed gearboxes used in all Minor Travellers are tough and reliable, though very high mileage can take its toll. The ’box on the later Minor 1000 (with the 1098cc engine) seems to be particularly durable, although you should still check for signs of worn synchromesh (‘crunching’ as you change from first to second in particular) and make sure the car doesn’t jump out of gear when under load. If there’s any clutch judder, it might be caused by a slack steady cable between the gearbox and crossmember – a simple and inexpensive fix.

Suspension, steering and brakes

It’s not uncommon to find a Minor with seized wheel cylinders, particularly if it’s a car that’s been off the road for some time. On your test drive, make sure the car doesn’t pull to one side when you’re braking. If there is a problem, don’t let it put you off an otherwise excellent example, as all brake parts are inexpensive and changing the wheel cylinders or carrying out a brake service isn’t a major undertaking. A set of front brake shoes costs from around £18, while an aftermarket wheel cylinder can be had from less than £12.

The Minor’s all-drum braking system does a decent enough job (even given the extra weight of the Traveller) but it’s not unusual to find a car that’s had a front-disc upgrade. Unless you’re ultra-strict about originality, this is a very worthwhile modification and will help to greatly improve your driving enjoyment. If you fancy carrying out the conversion yourself, Charles Ware’s Morris Minor Centre charges around £515 for a Ford-based front disc brake kit.

The Minor’s suspension requires regular lubrication, so make sure the Traveller you’re thinking of buying comes from a caring owner and has been well-maintained over the years. Neglected cars can see their front suspension collapse when the trunnion comes away from the upright, usually caused by owners failing to grease the screw thread (which links the two) every 2000 miles.

A sure sign of worn trunnions is steering that feels unprecise (a healthy Minor’s rack and pinion set-up is sharp and entertaining), something that should be obvious on your test drive. If the mounts for the rack – or even the steering linkage itself – need attention, this might also account for an ‘odd’ steering feel. It’s also worth checking the condition of the rubber gaiters, as these obviously provide vital protection.

If the Traveller you’re inspecting seems to sit lower than most, the lever arm dampers and/or rear leaf springs are likely to be worn and sagging. The lever arms are inexpensive and relatively easy to replace, but a pair of leaf springs and all ancillaries will obviously cost significantly more.

morris minor traveller wood

Interior and trim

Any Morris Minor is fairly basic inside, with vinyl upholstery in the vast majority of cases and a simple spec. It makes it easy to check for issues – and if there are areas that can be improved upon, it should be a fairly straightforward process.

Morris Minor specialists will be able to help with most replacement trim, although it’s also worth speaking to the team at Newton Commercial (newtoncomm.co.uk), which offers a range of Minor Traveller front and rear seat cover kits (in either vinyl or leather) as well as new door panels, rear three quarter trim panels and door pulls. The seat covers are authentic recreations of the originals, with the same trim patterns and even the duo-tone finish of earlier cars. Whatever age of Minor Traveller you have, giving its interior an authentic new look should be do-able – although the cost of a complete interior rejuvenation can mount up.

Externally, it’s obviously a case of checking the chromework is in good order, although again most items are available ‘off the shelf’ – with bumper blades easily found from around £155, while new stainless-steel hubcaps are less than £24 each.

Morris Minor Traveller: our verdict

It’s easy to see the appeal of a classic estate – and they don’t much more characterful or more endearing than the good old Morris Minor Traveller. This instantly-recognisable gem is as useful as it is charming, with all the load-swallowing capability you need for a trip to B&Q or a family day by the seaside, whilst being equally at home on any classic showground. It also happens to offer real driving pleasure, aided by its super-sharp steering.

There are downsides, of course, not least the ash frame playing such a major role in the car’s structure and strength – and something that’s both complex and fairly expensive to replace in its entirety. Buy a decent example though, and you’ll have a classic that’s both adaptable and entertaining in equal measure.

British Woodie: 1967 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller

Avatar photo

You don’t see a Morris Minor show up much these days, except maybe at a British car show. And when one does, it’s usually a sedan or maybe a convertible, but a Woodie? They were only one of about every six that were made. This one is from 1967 and must have been brought over individually from England as it’s a right-hand drive model. This one is being sold out of an estate by the owner’s widow and can be found in St. Petersburg, Florida. It’s available here on eBay where a no reserve auction has it at $4,494.

morris minor traveller wood

British Motor Corp. built more than 1.6 million Morris Minors from 1948 until well into the 1970s. The number of those that made it to the U.S. is unknown. The third series, called the 1000, was the largest and most powerful and likely sold the best. One of the body styles offered was the Traveller, a wood-framed estate wagon, appearing in the States long after the last American woodies converted to all-steel bodies. Cabinetmakers built the wood bodies from the B-pillar back with seasoned ash. It’s said to be the last production car in the world that used wood as a structure, except perhaps the Morgan sports cars. If you removed the back half, you’d have a chassis cab. We’re told that if you consult the owner’s manual, it will suggest sanding off the varnish every two years and applying a new coat of boat wood varnish in its place. I wonder how many folks actually did that.

morris minor traveller wood

The seller’s husband, who passed away nearly a decade ago, apparently had a collection of British cars, which included this 1967 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller. He had owned it since 2005 and used it regularly until his death, having always been garage-kept. The wood frame is said to still be solid, but rust is present in the floor pans and the rocker panels. The paint is not original and looks worn close up, so some metal and paint work should be done. But the wood itself looks good and that would be the hardest part to repair anyway. The seller believes the materials in the passenger cabin are original and in good shape, but the carpeting has been replaced. The speedometer needle is temperamental, but a tap on the glass may set it straight when that happens.

morris minor traveller wood

The car is powered by a 1,098-cc inline 4-banger, an upgrade from the 948-cc the cars first came out with. We’re told it starts up and runs smooth and makes no unusual sounds. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts as it should. The car has been updated with power-assisted front disc brakes, perhaps from a Morris Marina. At some point, the generator was given the boot in favor of an alternator with built-in regulator. The seller says the mileage is 174, but surely that can’t be right (“and don’t call me Shirley!” – sorry). The back of the wagon appears to contain a plethora of spare parts.

morris minor traveller wood

Hagerty indicates that high-teen dollars is about what these cars can go far in great shape. This one is mostly that, but the Woodie body style is bound to bump that number up nicely. I’m kind of surprised that this car has no reserve set for it in the auction, so it’s possible someone could end up with a bargain. We understand these cars are easy to work on and parts are not hard to find – kind of like the VW Beetle from the same era. Tip of the hat to Motor Trend for their uncover work on these cars.

Man if shipping hadn’t gone crazy like it has. This would be coming to Texas. I’ve got all it takes to change to LHD, a 1275 and a ribcase.

It’s been a while since I shipped a car – what has happened with shipping?

With ya…always wanted one since seeing one at church in the 60’s.

Avatar photo

I don’t know what year Morris finally made the change, but for earlier LHD Morris Minor cars, the 2 bolts holding the brake master cylinder to the frame were installed before the drive train was installed. They were installed in the same direction as in the RHD cars, from the right to the left.

Problem was, when it came time to remove the master cylinder from it’s protected position inside the frame box member, when the nuts are removed & with the transmission in place, the bolts hit the trans case! You’ve got a choice; Either remove the trans/engine assembly, or cut the bolts off!

I mention this so when a RHD to LHD change is attempted, make sure the master cylinder bolts are inserted with the nuts next to the transmission, not the outer edge of the car!

Rt 10 makes it less than a 2 day fly-in/drive home trip (10, 12 hrs) to Huston…

I’d use mate (or gloss) marine poly 1# every 5 yrs and that’s cuz I have no garage…

Like a lill wagon like this – esp the barn doors !

Rust is one of the big concerns with these. Wood rot on the back side of the wood is next. But per comment of oilngas, what’s the deal with shipping? Gas prices are down, so shipping costs should be too.

Grille looks wrong.Morris also built an Oxford woodie into the 50’s.

The wood on these is actually structural and needs to be inspected carefully otherwise repair costs will exceed the value of the car. I drove to San Antonio from Orlando Florida to pick up a car in January and actually towed a car out there so the trip paid for itself total 2500 miles 54 hours easy peasy.

All the wood and body parts are easily sourced from Britain and not expensive .

A girlfriend and I took my Austin Mini Countryman from Palo Alto to Nashville, via San Bernardino in 1973. It looked like the smaller version of this, except the wood (though real) was simply decorative … and literally a drag, as in heavy and non-aerodynamic. As this appears to be in much better condition than mine was, I would not be too worried about driving it home some distance, of course after a thorough inspection. And some seat belts installed …

I’ve always liked the Minors, and been in several, but never got around to having one. At almost-but-not-yet 80 I suppose I should either drop it or jump in, but dreaming is fun and pretty cheap. And three cars in the family is enough.

Hold me back !!!!!!

RBTH releases a special brochure – Moscow Traveller

Moscow Traveller

Moscow Traveller

The Russian capital has gone through countless changes since its founding in 1147. Today this bustling city is one of the world's great metropolises — full of exhibitions and performances, new art spaces, modern parks and expanded sports venues. In recent years, Moscow has attracted the best Russian and foreign architects and urban planners, who have made significant changes not only in the city's visible fabric but also in the patterns of urban life.

This largest city in Europe is managing its growth through the expansion of subway lines, launching new forms of public transportation and an expansion of bicycle lanes. Best Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

Nov 30, 2019

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling Water
  • Fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  • Simple syrup

Instructions:

  • You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
  • Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
  • Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
  • Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
  • Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

one whole ginger beside four sliced ginger

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup.

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

We hope this article has been useful in helping to introduce you to the Virgin Moscow Mule! The Moscow Mule is an incredibly versatile drink, so don't hesitate to let your creativity push you to experiment with new variations. And, if you want to take your presentation and style up a notch, make sure to equip your kitchen bar with a few copper mugs !
