Tylor best guide ever, fabulous food, personal attention, beautiful grounds, get to hug elephants!!!

safari camp jabulani africa

Where do I start… most incredible place I’ve ever stayed at. The staff was INCREDIBLE. We had the best Ranger (Ryan) ever, so full of energy and made our experience one never to forget. The Chef (Henlu) was the nicest guy you could ask for, our butler (Obert) also one to make us smile at every turn and would get every single detail perfect without flaw! We had the best time ever and couldn’t have wished for a better way to finish an amazing Honeymoon. Thank you so much

Safari-Lodge in privatem, übersichtlichem Umfeld. Sehr freundliches Personal in allen Bereichen. Interessante Game-Drives. Aussergewöhnliche Erlebnisse mit den Jabulani-Elefanten. Ausgezeichnete Küche.

safari camp jabulani africa

safari camp jabulani africa

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Jabulani, where luxury and purpose meet. As a proud Relais & Châteaux member and 5-star luxury lodge in Kapama Private Game Reserve in the Greater Kruger Park area, a Jabulani safari promises nothing but the best experience from start to finish. Jabulani, with its six superior suites and the exclusive, family-friendly Zindoga Villa, offers a unique opportunity for gracious living in a five-star luxury lodge. Each spacious and elegant suite is luxuriously furnished and features both a private deck and a plunge pool. Children are welcome at Jabulani from the age of six and at Zindoga Villa at any age. Protecting the gentle giants was one of the founding principles at Jabulani. The lodge was started to help care for a rescued elephant herd nearly 20 years ago. Today, they continue with this by sharing the experience with guests while guests help to conserve this magical species just by visiting. Devoted elephant carers share insightful stories of their life journeys with the Jabulani herd, while you have an opportunity to respectfully observe the elephants during their daily routines – while they enjoy their midday swim and forage in the wild. There are also plenty of other things to do, such as game drives, walking safaris, bird-watching, exploring the little creatures, helicopter flights, hot air balloon rides, and spending time at Jabulani’s onsite facilities, like the luxury bush spa. Jabulani offers a one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive dining experience. Enjoy fine cuisine in the best setting, from breakfast bush picnics and sundowner canapés, to star-lit private dinners or gatherings in the boma. Twice-daily morning and evening game drives are designed to coincide with the times of day that the wildlife is most active. Head into the bush on an open, custom-built safari vehicle, with our experienced and knowledgeable rangers at the helm. Jabulani is a soulful, insightful and unforgettable experience.

About Jabulani Safari

Centred around a waterhole in the Kapama Game Reserve near Hoedspruit in Limpopo, Camp Jabulani is an exclusive safari lodge in this Big Five landscape. There may be many other camps of similar description in the Greater Kruger Park area, but Jabulani is different – it has a resident herd of trained elephants and is the only camp that offers night safaris on elephant back. Interacting with these intelligent and gracious mammals is a magical experience. The camp is small – there are just six suites – and the service is up there with the very best.

Suite View from Private Deck %282%29

Exploring the reserve at night on the back of an elephant – truly magical.

Visiting the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre to see daily conservation work in action, watch African vultures being fed and see cheetah and the perilously endangered rhino.

Taking a safari drive through the reserve's varied habitats, which support great herds of animals, large and small.

The property

The walls may be made of mud, but make no mistake, Camp Jabulani is a superbly luxurious safari getaway. Indoors, it's all rich wood furniture, crystal glasses and silver service. The meals are feasts, the wines are fine, the lounge area has wireless internet and the bushveld views from the wooden deck are rewarding. There's a bush spa and a gym to work off your indulgences (a visit may well be needed!). You can get married here too – there's a function room in this lovely wilderness.

Camp Jabulani’s six suites are secluded, with canvas walls that roll up to reveal the surrounding wilderness. Each suite is air conditioned, has a lounge area and fireplace for cold nights, an en-suite bathroom with a stone tub and glass-walled outdoor shower, and a plunge pool. The beds are huge, with pure cotton sheets and draped mosquito nets. The larger Zindoga Villa has two individual suites linked by a lounge and serviced by a private chef, butler and game ranger.

One more thing...

I expected the rangers to do their best to make sure we saw the Big Five. I was not expecting them to impart the amount of knowledge they did. They seemed to know about every animal, from the dung beetle to the giraffe.

Show all activities

The lush and varied vegetation supports dense populations of wild animals. Watch and photograph the Big Five, herds of antelope, giraffe and zebra gathered at waterholes and predators on the prowl. Kapama has five separate prides of lion as well as leopard, cheetah, spotted hyaena and other smaller carnivores. Take a game drive or look out for the more than 350 recorded bird species. Visit the Endangered Species Centre or float above the bushveld in a hot air balloon.

Main

Camp Jabulani is a family-run luxury safari lodge located within the private Kapama Game Reserve adjacent to the world-famous Kruger National Park. The camp offers first-class service in an elegant setting, but its most notable feature is its herd of rescued African elephants, providing an unparalleled opportunity for up-close immersive interaction with one of the world's most fascinating and intelligent creatures.

Our Expert Says If you're looking for a unique safari experience with elephants, look no further than Camp Jabulani! The camp's commitment to rescuing orphaned and injured animals is amazing. It is one of just a few camps in Africa offering a sustainable, ethical, immersive elephant interaction experience, as well as traditional wildlife drives and guided nature walks. – John Holahan

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

The Kapama Game Reserve is home to lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, buffalo, spotted hyena, kudu, giraffe, zebra and more. The camp is most notable for its rescued elephant herd, which came into being in 1997 with the first member, Jabulani himself. The Camp Jabulani experience begins with an informative introduction to the elephant herd, followed by tracking the herd in the bush with elephant keepers. Enjoy a sundowner in a beautiful setting with the herd, and then follow them back to camp and help put them to bed in their stables. Other activities include wildlife drives in open vehicles, guided bush walks, and putting the elephants to bed at night. Visits to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center, founded by Camp Jabulani's owner, Lente Roode, is a must, and guests can volunteer their time with the rescued cheetahs, wild dogs and other animals that the center rehabilitates.

Kruger National Park is a quintessential wildlife destination, featuring the Big Five and other big cats and large mammals. The below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced in the area. Other typical sightings may include warthogs, baboons and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on weather and wildlife movements.

Conservation

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center (HESC) is one of the foremost private breeding and research facilities for endangered wildlife in South Africa. The HESC was established initially as a cheetah breeding center in the late 1980s by Lente Roode with the goal of creating a broader gene pool within the cheetah meta-population of southern Africa, a vital step in the long-term survival of the species. Conservation of the various types of endangered wildlife at the center is ensured through educational programs and volunteer opportunities. The HESC today comprises more 250 acres of natural bush and cares for cheetah, African wild cats, African wild dogs, sable, tsessebe, nyala, and a number of other resident animals. The center is actively involved in breeding rare mammals, releasing captive-bred cheetahs into the wild, the treatment and rehabilitation of orphaned or injured animals brought to the center, and student programs.

Nothing quite tops the first introduction to the Camp Jabulani elephants! Their sheer size and presence are humbling.

Iain bridges the gap between man and giant with an informative introduction and orientation into the personalities of the elephants – providing useful information that will no doubt both entertain and educate.

And so begins the elephant safari. Each participant is partnered with an elephant based on temperament. Guests mount their elephant via a specially constructed ramp. Saddles have been designed with comfort in mind - for both the elephants and riders. Made of high density foam (ensuring a light weight), they are built up laterally, and have both handles and stirrups.

Atop their mighty spines, guests soon become lulled by the step by step amble – the gentle “side to side” rocking motion. Moving in single file (with Jabulani in the lead), silence reigns. A silence with no words – but with beautiful harmonious communication of the bush and its inhabitants.

Share in the ultimate African experience. View tree tops, birds' nests, and giraffes almost face to face. Sail high above the bushveld and feel part of the environment, instead of being just a passive observer. On elephant back, one is truly an integral part of the experience.

Afternoon safaris are conducted just before the sun sets – the elephants ultimately converge on the romantic setting of lanterns, a white linen table adorned with a selection of beverages, crystal glasses, fresh flowers and delectable canapés specially prepared by the chef.

It is not hard to feel that “Life is good” as a sundowner sees the end of another day at Camp Jabulani , and allows for quiet reflection of the effect that a walk with elephants has instilled on even the most hardened soul.

Camp Jabulani offers the only night safari on elephant back in the world! Under the stars amidst the night sounds and dwellers, each guest is able to create their own experience as the sole proprietor of potent battery-powered spotlights. They may choose between swaying through the inky dark; finding millions of glittering eyes in the surrounding bush; or observing the planetarium-like splendour of the milky-way above.

Guests have the opportunity of “tucking” the elephants into their stables for the evening ahead, and of witnessing firsthand the mutual respect and genuine fondness between the elephants and their tenders.

One thing is certain – one cannot help but be changed forever after sharing an experience with the Camp Jabulani elephants.

Game Drives

Your first African safari experience will remain a cherished memory for the rest of your life. A game drive on a Big Five reserve is a humbling and soulful experience. At Jabulani, game drives are conducted by experienced and knowledgeable rangers in open, custom-built safari vehicles in a private game reserve of 16 000 hectares.

Morning Game Drives

Wake up in sync with the heartbeat of Africa, venture out to greet the dawn and have the opportunity of appreciating the sounds and beauty of the bushveld awakening. Later departures can also be arranged with your ranger

Evening Game Drives

Evening game drives beneath the glittering stars of the African sky present our wildlife in a totally different way. Using only a spotlight to track the animals, this is a thrilling safari experience that offers excellent sightings of nocturnal animals.

Walking Safaris

A walking safari takes you that one step closer to the essence of the African bush. The exhilaration of being so close to nature, feeling the crunch of the wilderness beneath your feet, the texture of plants stroking your skin as you brush past and the amazing sounds and smells of Africa will remain with you long after you have left Jabulani. Follow the tread of your armed ranger, who will guide you safely through a memorable adventure.

Rhino Africa Wildlife Photos (42)

In Africa, the Big Five game animals are the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo. The term was coined many years ago by African big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult and dangerous animals in Africa to hunt on foot. While hunting is these days frowned upon by many, and for good reason, the Big Five are still very much around.

Enjoy them now in a different manner on an African safari experience. Jabulani is home to an abundant population of the Big Five and ensures excellent sightings. While seeing all five of the Big Five within a short visit can never be guaranteed, it is certainly not uncommon. Even the elusive leopard, often described as the least social of the African big cats, is frequently spotted.

Little Things

Most African safari enthusiasts appreciate the “little things” as much as they do the Big five if guided with a passionate and knowledgeable ranger. Our Jabulani rangers impart a great wealth of information of both larger wildlife, as well as the little critters, that so often go unnoticed. You will soon learn that they are just as important in the ecosystem as their bigger wildlife neighbours.

There is so much fascinating information just waiting to be discovered, if you pause to look that little bit closer, from insects to the endless flora that surrounds you on safari. Fortunately, our rangers will share their eyes and their wisdom, ensuring you feel that bit closer to nature.

Lilac breasted roller 2020 Sightings by Xander (10)

With a bird count of over 350 species, Jabulani is a birders’ delight. Birds add yet another magical dimension to your Jabulani safari. Taking the time to learn about them provides an even more rewarding wildlife experience. Colourful birds are often easier to identify and guests tend to have a great appreciation for seeing them on safari, but the thrill of spotting birds of prey in action, the iconic African fish eagle, or one of the many owl species that inhabit the Jabulani bushveld never fails to impress.

African Entrepreneurs in Moscow: How They Did It Their Way

Profile image of Dmitri Bondarenko

2014, Urban Anthropology and Studies of Cultural Systems and World Economic Development. 2014. 43: 1–3. P. 205–254.

The article will discuss the variety of African migrants’ pathways toward social recognition and success in a Russian megacity by describing and analyzing the experiences of the Ethio-pian owners of two establishments in Moscow: a lavish downtown restaurant, and a small café on an international university campus on the city’s outskirts. These cases display various points of both similarity and divergence, but are here regarded as examples of successful Af-rican entrepreneurship, each in its own way, contrasting with the usual representation of Afri-cans as passive victims in the receiving society. As background for the analysis we provide information on the changes that have occurred since the breakup of the USSR, and which have impacted on the migrants’ social composition, on their strategies of integration, and on the modes of their acceptance by the new sociocultural milieu. The research is based mainly on in-depth and semi-structured interviews with the two establishment owners, their employees, and guests conducted in May to June 2012. It reveals the factors that have pro-moted their successful establishment in the Russian capital as well as their own perceptions of the position of migrants within it.

Dmitri Bondarenko

The changes since the breakup of the USSR have impacted African migrants' social composition, as well as their strategies and forms of adaptation and integration in the capital city of Moscow. In this study, we discuss the factors influencing the choices of African migrants, related to their background as Africans and to their perceptions of the receiving society. We distinguish between two social groups of African migrants and argue that while one group seeks integration into the Russian society, the other limits itself to mere adaptation to life in Moscow.

safari camp jabulani africa

Africans constitute a rather small minority among the migrants to Russia. It appears that their numbers, as well as their impact on society at large, will probably never become comparable to those of migrants from former Soviet republics, or even from some other countries, such as China. At the same time it is evident that the inflow of Africans to Russia is growing, and they are becoming more noticeable in the Russian ethnocultural landscape, and yet there is still only a handful of studies on Africans in post-Soviet Russia. Our project of the study of the African migrants in the Russian capital megacity Moscow included two interrelated parts: The pathways of sociocultural adaptation Africans choose, willingly or forcedly, the one hand, and their perception and acceptance / non-acceptance by the receiving society (as reflected in the prevailing opinion about Africans and especially in their most typical image among native Russian citizens), on the other.

This study casts a socially orientated analysis of the impact of the cinematic space since the introduction of cinematic technologies to Ethiopia as early as 1889 E.C. (1986/7), during Menelik II’s reign. By presenting ethnographic research and comparisons of historical sources this paper offers new insights into the development of both the built cinematic space in urban Addis and the popular rural travelling cinemas of the Italian occupation (1936-41). After comparing early discourses positioning the cinema between modernising aristocrats and conservative clerics, the discussion then turns to the Italian occupation and the proliferation of both outdoor and indoor cinemas throughout Ethiopia. During this era, alternative discourses shall be highlighted; such as the Italian administration’s use of cinema as an instrument of subjugation and mass regimentation, and the subversive resistance perpetrated by Ethiopian spectators as they mocked projections of Italian prestige. After briefly mentioning the post war developments and the state monopolisation of cinema under the Derg regime, the paper discusses the commercialisation of cinema and the social ambivalences created by built cinematic spaces which populate present-day Addis Ababa. Older cinemas, located near Piassa and Merkato will be associated with አራዳ ‘Arada’ prototypes and seen as enclaves of social and moral ambiguities, mimicking the spatial and symbolic characteristics of their locales. Whilst Matti Multiplex, with its three screens and 7D simulator, is read as a translocal space in which the global desires of Ethiopia’s aspiring middle class and the high-end, expat appeal of Bole Road collide.

Although Enochian studies is one of the flourishing disciplines in the field of Biblical studies, and hence the significance of the Ethiopic Enoch in recent development of the area, the cultural and textual significance of the Book of Enoch in the Ethiopian spiritual and textual tradition seems less established. The main objective of this paper will be to investigate the influence of the book of Enoch on shaping the Ethiopian imagination of the Afterlife by taking two Ethiopian eschatological narratives, namely Ra’әyä Maryam (Revelations of Mary) and Mängädä sämay (The Way to Heaven). The two narratives are selected particularly for they are among the category of Ethiopian texts that primarily, if not exclusively, focus on the eschatological dimension of human life. In addition, the high circulation rate of these two narratives, both orally and written, among the adherents of the Ethiopian Church makes them the legitimate materials to investigate the cultural significance of the Book of Enoch in the Ethiopian medieval literary production as well as the living Christian tradition of the country.

Dark alleys, graffitti...

It's pretty hard to find the hostel - it is in a side alley, which isn't very brightly lit. I'm 6'1" and it was a bit scary walking to the hostel in the dark. You have to enter through an arc, full of graffiti, and go straight for a while. Located on the left (or right, if you're going through THE OTHER arc... through a construction site), it looks more like a bunker or a bomb shelter. There is a tiny sign, and a big metal orange door. Right by it seems to be a backway entrance to some restaurant where all the restaurant staff hangs out and smokes... they seem kind of shady too. Not much to say about the staff - they seem fine. But nothing too special. The rooms are a bit cramped... not much space for living and luggage and all that. Yes, its downtown... but the area (dark alley) just doesn't seem safe. It's dark, bunch of graffiti, weird, shady guys smoking... I can't say I would recommend. More

This hostel is very new. Great location close to Metro and Red Square etc. Rooms a little cramped but this seems to be the norm for Moscow. There are lockers which is great. Comfy beds and duvets etc. Nice and clean. Plenty of bathrooms-although it was fairly full there was rarely a wait. Kitchen nice and well equipped. Laundry 100 roubles - but the machine is very small! Staff friendly and helpful.

The location is 10 minutes walking to Kremkin and bear the metro but the entrace to the hostel is a little bit dark in the night. The room is clean, plenty of bathroom and also clean. Reading light and plug for every bed. Kitchen and common room is combined and looking good with fully facilities. 100 rubles for laundry. Nice staff. The Cheapest 8 bed room is only 440 rb.

It was a surprise to us that probably the cheapest hostel in Moscow is located in the center of the old city of Moscow. Moscow is a really expensive city, so the hostel where you can cook and it is not far away, is a priceless treasure. Less than a mile to the Red Square. The hostel is really like new, has a kitchen decorated as if someone was doing shopping at Ikea and do not forget to visit any department. Some pots were not even unpacked. Guests have at their disposal all kitchen appliances, large fridge, a machine for hot water, free tea and coffee (and sugar :). The living room is wonderfully decorated, has a wicker chairs, painting referring to Africa and tasteful (well, maybe a little abstract) cuddly African animals.   Staff are friendly and very helpful. Provide very useful information about places in Moscow. In the hostel you can find some (new) guides, including Lonely Planet. They should, however, write that the guests do not wynosili their living room. They know even really strange. There is no problem with leaving one luggage. The rooms are very reasonably designed, each bed has a locker and two sockets at the correct height. Quite hard to get there, I think already working on hanging a large sign. Petrovka street side you enter the gate of a building with scaffolding. Hostel is a (orange?) metal door in a building on the right, a children's playground.

The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The location cannot be beat - it is walking distance away from Red Square/Kremlin and major theaters, multiple Metro stations and restaurants/bars. Love the bright colors and the funky decorations as well - most hostels I've been to have been rather drab, run-down affairs and these guys prove that even for a little money you don't have to settle for something that looks like an old hospital bed. All in all, for the $15/night I paid, this is a fantastic value and I would gladly come back here time and time again. In an expensive city that rarely lends itself to value, Safari is a welcome and pleasant surprise.
