Removing tour pak from "06 Ultra FLHTCUI

  • Add to quote

Can anyone verify if the kit offered from HD, 53303-07, from their catalog will do the trick on my '06 Ultra Classic. I want to be able to strip off the tour pak and stick a solo seat on it for one up riding which is what i do 90% of the time. The catalog is a little unclear the way it is worded. It states '94 - '08 touring models but then at the bottom it states (except FLHTCUI & FLHRSE3/4) The guy behind my local HD parts counter says it will. I just don't want to spend a couple hours tearing down just to get a point to where I have to take what I have on back off and box it up and take it back. Any help is appreciated.

You can make the tour pak detachable using the 53303-07 kit, but you won't have the CB antenna available and you'll need to disconnect that antenna inside the tour pak, as well as unplug the connectors inside the speaker pods, and disconnect the passenger head set connector so that it can be stored along with the other wiring you've disconnected. Suggestion: Have the dealer print out the instructions for the detachable kit HD sells for '09 and newer Ultras because that will explain the electrical connectors being disconnected, as well as identify the antenna patch cables used for getting the quick disconnects outside the tour pak so you don't have to remove the tour pak liner to disconnect the antenna cables. Although there are differences in the detachable racks and mounting hardware used on the '09 and newer bikes, the electrical and antenna connector issues are the same. Bottom line is that you can buy the -07 kit understanding that you will be disconnecting electrial and antenna connectors that are not found on the EG Classic due to your speaker pods and CB antenna. The detachable tour pak light harness kit, p/n 70113-08, is like a patch cord allowing the electrical connection for tour pak lighting to be disconnected outside the tour pak and worth purchasing along with the -07 kit. A final point worth mentioning. HD's CB antennas are notorious for being poorly tuned. I'm not a CB tech, but the HD antennas are, according to an expert ( http://claysradioshop.com/ ) very poorly tuned and poor tuning can lead not only to poor transmission, but also damage the CB module. So, if you use your CB, have it tuned whether or not you make the tour pak detachable, and if you make it detachable and plan to use CB with the tour pak off the bike, have the antenna tuned for both applications: tour pak on and off the bike. One option would be to use the J&M in-fairing CB antenna. I use it and it's fine for group riding which is all I need from it. Good luck with your project. And by all means get those directions for the '09 and newer detach kit HD sells for Ultras. Carl

Thanks Carl! I have never really used my CB. The antenna is actually already off and stored in my garage. As for the speaker wires I had already thought of them, I didnt see anything about them mentioned with the kit. Shouldn't be to big a deal to make some quick connects for them. And yes I plan to purchase the 70113-08 wire harness kit. Thanks for your quick response. I will definately move forward on this project.

Tour Pack Removal - Without Quick Release

  • Add to quote

I just purchased a 2002 FLTRI with a tour pack installed. I have not yet taken delivery of the bike but when I do, I'm wanting to remove the tour pack on it. Not permanently, just for a while until I decide I need it. Can anyone give me some info on how difficult this is? And then how hard to reinstall? Is the quick removal kit worth it if I'm changing it out pretty frequently? There are no speakers or lights that I can tell but there is an antenna connected. I appreciate the help in advance. RZR

tour pack removal

Pretty easy removal but having the quick connect system is for sure worth the extra money. Besides you can clamp on a simple sissy bar for day rides.

I pulled the plugs in the tour pack (they only fit one way when reinstalling) and tucked them under the seat. No muss no fuss, very easy. As far as the antenna, you can buy a relocation bracket kit and reinstall on rear side, you can buy a hidden antenna in the fairing (I don't like that idea) or you can tuck the antenna under and along side of seat. This forum shows how to do that. Or just use you own tunes!

Always told to go to school on somebody else's experiences. I want to remove my tour-pac and replace it with the '09-'11 FLHXXX luggage rack and passenger back rest. Going to ride this configuration around town......road trips, put the tour-pac back on. My question (no I haven't crawled under my trike yet) how hard is it to get to the bolts that hold the tour-pac on the body ?? I have very thing ready to bolt on just have to get under the trike or in the trunk and get after it. BUT having Parkinson's getting on the ground is the easy part, it's the getting up off the ground that is the challenge. Getting up and down trying to accomplish this is what's going to wear me out. Have found that things that use to take me 30-40min now take better than an hour or 2. Would rather have everything ready, in place, and get it done. Having had detachable tour-pac setups on my Ultras I already know about antennas, speakers, wiring and such. Suggestions ???? (other than letting somebody else do it.) LoL !!! Thanks in advance for the education. 8~\o

If I remember right on the top of the inside of the trunk you have to remove four nuts. (7/16 or 1/2" socket) Remove seat and unplug wiring and antenna wire. You should then be able to lift right off. (is heavier then it looks)

I got you PM, and went out to snap a pic. There are 3 (7/16") nuts on each side that hold the Tour Pac on. I have a bad back and my bend overs don't bend over so well anymore either. So when I removed mine I sat on a rolling shop stool behind and to the side of the open door, and used a 7/16" socket and a long extension with a ratchet and reached up and felt where the nuts were to remove them. Then I did the same thing to install the rack which uses 5/16" x 18 bolts with a 1/2" head. I chose to cut the heads off of 6 ~ 5/16" bolts and thread the bolts into the rack as studs with blue locktite on them, and then put the rack down onto the trunk and secured it with 1/2" locknuts. I thought I was going to have to drill out the holes in the trunk because of the difference in the bolt sizes. But to my surprise the holes are already 5/16" rather than the smaller 1/4" studs that the Tour Pac uses. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask I will be happy to help. There is a better pic of the underside of the trunk top in the last post of this thread. http://www.triketalk.com/forum/threa...there-be-Light

Great info.... Thanks fellow. Good idea on cutting the bolt heads off. Plan to install it useing nylon lock nuts with fender washers. Plan to use a come-along to lift the tour-pac off and it on an extra roll around tool rack I have. Might even bolt it to that tray to prevent uh-oh's from happening. Thanks again, 8~\o

If you don't already have the FLHXXX luggage rack and sissy bar, you might be out of luck. I've been told that the sissy bar is no longer being sold or made. There's a guy on another forum whose been looking for one for weeks now. Call your local HD shop and have them do a global search for one (probably won't find one though). I have one for my 11 XXX, but wouldn't part with it because of its discontinuance. Bubba Originally Posted by Texan Always told to go to school on somebody else's experiences. Took some doing to get 'em but finally did. Thought about doing this a couple years ago and dropped the idea when I found out ALL the parts for the FLHXXX were being discontinued. I DID find a luggage rack (no back rest sissy bar) in up state New York for $350.00 but he sold it 10 minutes after he listed it on eBay. There has to be so stock laying around in a couple 2-3 Harley shops around the country but nobody's ask 'em. There was a local fellow had a tour-pac installed on his FLHXXX here locally a couple years ago and from what I can find out the dealership tossed the luggage rack. DUH !!!! I'm good and feel that if I ever do decide to stay with the tour-pac I can always get my $$$$$$ back. 8~\o

Yeah, I'll post some pics. Started to when I installed my chrome inner primary but there are bunches of those out on YouTube. Figured everybody already had done this. Will post some pics on my going topless cause I can't/couldn't find any thing on it. What I should document is the dang search for the FLHXXX parts. OMG!! If they are out there everybody's keeping quiet. Ha!! Have a friend that has a FLHXXX says he'll just loan me his bike and save me some time. 8~\o

Trunk bolts inside the trunk

I removed my tour pack and I got lucky and found a rack. My tour pack has 4 bolts that screw into welded on nuts on a flat metal bar inside the top of the trunk. My trike is a 2013 Tri Glide. My question is what is the braided ground wire for that's attached to one of the bolts inside the trunk used for? Also if I cut the nipples off of the plastic tits that hold the flat bar to the inside of the top of the trunk will it come off easily?

2017 Lock Assembly on Trunk

So it seems like others have had this same issue. My trunk lock assembly came off in my hand when I stopped at the dealership. They did fix it after a 3 Hr. wait time but the seal around the assembly came out the first Time I washed the bike after the repair and it is loose again. 2 week wait for parts and I will have to loose another riding day while they fix it again. By the way I am going to be putting in a Tour Pac Relocation Kit this weekend any hints on Disassembly to make it go smoother?

Removal of tour pac

  • Add to quote

Has anyone removed their tour pac from an ultra classic and replaced it with a luggage rack and removal backrest? What parts did you use and how did you relocate the radio antenna and cb antenna?

tour pack removal

I think there is a kit from HD that has everything needed, including the antenna relocation parts. Not close to the catalog now, but check the parts look up in the HD parts section.

tour pack removal

Thinking of doing this on my ultra with the detachable kit. Hoping the dealer has a bike there that had it done so I can get a idea of the looks when removed.

tour pack removal

Look at a Street Glide. The rear end shouldn't look too much different.

took my tour pack off cut a piece of alum diamond plate to fit on top of mount got a atenna relocate kit from hd polished the d-plate to a brilant shine bougt a street glide seat off craigslist now it looks like a classic streetglide and can put it all back on in no time at all for long trips :nod

tour pack removal

I just installed the Harley kit, (HD Detachable Tour Pak Mounting Rack Kit FLHTC 53303-07) on my Ultra and it works great. Really makes a difference in how the bike handles without the high weight of the Tour Pak back there. I spliced plugs in the running light and speaker wiring under the seat, just past the gas tank and installed hidden AM-FM, WB and CB antennas under the bat-wing fairing that work just as good as the "whips" so as not to have to re-do those when using the Pak. The intercom is rolled up and stowed under the seat but I rarely ever use it and that's where it stays unless needed. For me it's like having two different bikes. A "No Pak" city ride or, snap the Pak on for a long haul.

Tour pak removal kit I priced the complete kit with backrest, and luggage rack from the dealer installed and it was $1200.00 cdn.

Had the HD setup installed as a part of the deal on my UC - I love it. Comes off easily but I need a little help puttin it back on as I can't see the 4 point when I'm landing the pak back on the bike. I do take mine on and off frequently - love the look without it, love the GF not whining when I put it back on!

Does your bike feel substantially lighter and easier to handle at slow speeds with the Tour-pak removed or only moderately so? Do you really notice a difference? Thanks

tour pack removal

I can't speak to my '14 limited as the tourpak is permanently mounted, but my 02 classic had a removable tourpak and the difference in handling was very noticeable. I was surprised with the difference. Remove the saddlebags and the difference is even greater.

tour pack removal

Can't say there is any significant difference in feel or handling for me without the pizza box on the back but there is a HUGE difference in my ability to get on and off my bike. With the box on the bike I went through painful contortions to mount and dismount. I'm still overweight and older than dirt but I am having much more fun riding without the tourpac. I miss it's storage capacity but I compensate for that with a large bag strapped to the luggage rack. My Mustang seat has a folding backrest, which is a must-have for me. I installed cheap Chinese knockoff hardware so I can reinstall the tourpac but I haven't put the box back on yet after a year without it......doubt I will ever put it back on. I replaced original antenna with a Harley inside the fairing antenna which works great.

tour pack removal

When I did mine it was a world of difference . It wasn’t so damn too heavy. Almost felt like a soft tail but a smoother ride [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
