Testimonials

I just returned from a Catholic Journey’s pilgrimage tour of Croatia and Bosnia. The highlight was 5 days in Medjugorje. This place truly lives ‘peace on earth’.  The accommodations were superb and our pilgrimage tour guide, Evo, was outstanding. This has been my fourth Catholic Pilgrimage with Catholic Journeys and I have been more than satisfied with all aspects of the trip. They are so professional and caring. I highly recommend them for a Catholic pilgrimage tour.

Mr. Hyland,

Thank you for the wonderful pilgrimage tour to the Holy Land that your company organized. The guide was excellent, the places we visited put me in contact with the places that Christ walked, and the accommodations were great.  Truly, a Catholic Pilgrimage!

Fr Kevin Mues

Thanks to Catholic Journeys for planning a fantastic pilgrimage tour to Israel!  I am so fortunate to have been able to experience it with you all.   I truly couldn’t have asked for a better group of folks to travel around Israel on a bus for 11 days with!

Here is my email address. As I mentioned, I’d love to be included in the email chain when you email out everyone’s contact info. Hope you had a great time as well!

Life Changing

To be able to follow in the footsteps of Jesus from His birth, life, death and resurrection is truly a life changing experience.

We visited the ancient and Holy Lands of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. I can’t describe the feeling of being able to touch, smell and feel the ground that Jesus walked on, and to visit the sites where He performed his miracles and where our most beloved Bible stories took place.

This pilgrimage will open you up to a deeper connection and appreciation for your faith than you've ever experienced before.

Join a Catholic Pilgrimage

catholic pilgrimage tour companies

As one of the largest and most experienced Catholic tour operators in the world, we have two primary ways in which individuals can join a Catholic Pilgrimage or Italian Cultural Heritage tour. In many cases, pilgrimages are sponsored by the priest of a parish or by parish groups in a city and all of the travelers will belong to the specific parish or parishes involved. However, some tours openly welcome other members to join their group.

What to Expect on a Unitours Pilgrimage

Whether you plan on attending a pilgrimage organized by your parish or joining another group’s tour, you can learn more by watching the following videos.

“Everything is worked out and I was able to go and it was a delightful trip.” The faithful have always felt a need to travel to the places that are holy to them, to see the sites, to touch the stones, to smell the smells, to pray the prayers, to visit the places and events which have helped formed the faith we hold as sacred. For over 50 years Unitours has provided Catholics with the quality prices and the spiritual dimension they have always deserved. “With Unitours it is so detailed that I didn’t have to worry about anything, except the pilgrims and what’s happening with them.” Whether you are seeking to answer faith or academic questions to grow deeper in your faith, to do penance or to pray with other Catholics, Unitours has created the perfect pilgrimage to help make the scriptures and church traditions come alive for you. We make all the arrangements, round trip areas arranged from your home city, we choose centrally located quality hotels that will fit your budget. Unitours provides fully escorted travel in deluxe air conditioned motor coaches, for one low price, Unitours provides you with a journey you will never forget. “A lot of them did not know each other, but by the time we finished the pilgrimage, they were like family, you know they were church, we have been praying together, we’ve been laughing together, crying together, we’ve been having supper together, breakfast together, looking out for one another, helping one another, some of the younger ones would help the older ones and it just becomes so cohesive group, it is really a church happening.” Take advantage of Unitours organized group pilgrimages designed specifically for the catholic pilgrim, including a knowledgeable local guide, a gifted catholic priest spiritual leader, daily liturgy and visits to significant sites, with all the amenities modern American travelers have come to expect. For over 50 years Unitours has arranged pilgrimages that fit a group spiritual and temporal needs as well as their budget. We offer the destination and tours you want including the holy land, Jordan, Egypt, Italy, Fatima, Lourdes and many more. “Even when I visit and I have visited Italy 6 to 7 times, it’s never the same experience, because I think the people around us make a difference and there are things that we can pick up, that we may have missed before, there is just so much that we can take in.” To learn more about any of our programs, go to our pilgrim traveler’s website and search for the pilgrimage destination and dates that will work for you or call us at 1-800-777-7432 or visit Unitours.com.

“Hi I am Bob Faucett, vice president of Unitours. We are so delighted that you are considering joining us and one of our Catholic Pilgrimages to Europe and the Middle East. Back in 1977, when I made my own first pilgrimage, I had a myriad of questions about the company, about what to expect, those types of things. We’ve made this video in the hopes that we can answer some of the same questions that you might have about Europe. First let me tell you a little bit about Unitours. We’re established in 1957, we are specialist in international group travel. We are not conventional travel agent; all we do is specialize groups overseas and our bread and butter what we do most is Catholic Pilgrimages . We are members of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents), we are members of the local Better Business Bureau in Westchester County in New York, where head quarters is located. We are founding members of United States Tour Operators Association and we are still affiliate members today. The focus on Unitours type of services, we provide a high quality tour, we don’t like the idea of bargain basement kinds of tour, it’s just not the type of thing we do, our word & our reputation have made us so well known in the business, our attention to detail, we like to cross every T and dot every I, we have a great system put together to make sure that we communicate with everybody involved in the pilgrimage and we do that extremely well. We would like to run balanced itineraries, meaning itineraries that have a balance of the spiritual as well as the secular sites. When you are in a city like Paris or Rome, surely we want to see the spiritual site associated, but you also want to see the secular sites the Eiffel tower or the Coliseum or places like that as well, so we may try to have balance itineraries, we just try to have fun on pilgrimages as well, we think that the pilgrimages can be run on a balance basis. We have professional knowledgeable tour managers. These are people who escort your group, they meet you at the airport, they travel with you every day, they sleep in the same hotel as you at night, they take care of your group and they take you back to the airport at the end, these are people I can almost guarantee that you going to fall in love with after your 10 days or 15 days with them, they are wonderful, wonderful people that have worked with us for years." We have a professional knowledgeable staff at our headquarters in Port Chester, New York, people who attend to the invoicing and to itineraries and can answer any questions that you might have as well. Why do people go on pilgrimages? Ton of reasons that people go on various pilgrimages, but I think that main thing that people go on is to build their own faith, it’s a faith journey and they want to make a pilgrimage to build it on their own faith, they might go on a pilgrimage to study scriptures, certainly if you are going to the holy land, it is the best place in the world to study scriptures, because the scriptures just come live over there, but you might want to study some church history, some of the background of saints that have gone before us and who are important in our faith journey as well, so that’s another reason that we go on. Some people go on pilgrimages for healing, it might be a spiritual healing, it might be a physical healing, one of the beauties of being in the business that we are in is that we have seen many, many healing take place at various sites that we take pilgrimage throughout the year. A Lot of our organizers are priest who run pilgrimages, they go with the idea of helping to build community. It is one of the things I love to say, love to see is that when a pilgrimage takes place, church happens. You experience a faith experience that you share with other people who are travelling with you and it’s just organic, it just happens. You make new friends, you might also go to safely see the world with people that you know, you love, you respect and you feel safe travelling with. What do you expect on a Unitours pilgrimage? On a Unitours pilgrimage you can expect that you are going to travel in schedule air, you’re not going to be on charter flights or any that kind of thing, we use carriers that know us, that we know as well. You’re going to have quality centrally located hotels, these are places that will meet American standards, places that we know, that we have travel to, that we have sent other pilgrims to and that we are comfortable sending American travelers to them as well. You are going to have that tour manager as I mentioned before who is going to live with your group and escort your group be on the bus every single day with you, you’re going to have modern air conditioned motor coaches that will be available everyday that you’ll travel on. You’re going to have local guides in some cities and countries, especially in Europe, we engage local guides who come on, who are experts in their particular cities, this is certainly true in some of the larger cities. These local guides also know us and we know them and they travel with Unitours Catholic Pilgrimages group as well, these are people who are also available, they are included as well. You are going to have a buffet breakfast at your hotel every day; usually you’re going to have a hot component with it as well. Mostly your dinners are going to be included that are dinner at your hotels. Look at your brochure it makes it crystal clear, whether your meals each day are included or whether they are on your own, we like to have this clear, but mostly of your dinners are going to be included at your hotel in the evening. Most of our groups have mass scheduled each day and we schedule a private mass so that the priest who is the spiritual leader of your group will be the celebrant to share that mass with you and your fellow pilgrims and we make all those arrangement to make sure that you’re there as well. What are the cost elements that go into the pilgrimage, how does it work? One thing, the price of your tour is going to include your air fare, usually from your home city you need to look at the brochure to see exactly where that tour originates, the air is included, the hotels are included, as I mentioned before, your meals that are specified on the brochure, they are included as well, the motor coach, the entrance fees that to get in, we don’t have you having to pay to get in to the various sites, that all will be taken care for you and usually you get on a faster basis, because we have a group reservation in many of the places. One of the elements that may or may not be included in the price of your tour is the ever changing air taxes and fuel surcharges that airlines are imposing today, on some tours our host would have us include them in the price, other ones they exclude them and they would be added to your final bill, the brochure would make it crystal clear whether that’s included in your price or not. It is also a moving target according to the price of oil and whether the fuel surcharges goes up and down, that’s a moving target. What is not included as well is usually tips to the tour managers, the guides, the step on guides, the drivers, the bus driver, your dining room staff, those are not included, but typically we are going to invoice those for you and we will give those funds to your tour leaders who will disperse them as you travel, so that you not having to pass the hat and dig into your pocket every time somebody steps onto your bus or not. The one thing that is optional is your travel insurance, it’s up to you whether you buy that or not, we will add it to the invoice, of your final invoice, but it’s up to you, you can either accept it and pay that invoice or you can just cross it off, the invoice and pay the lesser amount, it’s totally up to you and its optional. People also often ask about the physical elements of the pilgrimages. Probably the most common questions we get is, how much walking is involved. The answer is, yes there is walking, we are delighted that some of the shrines are at places where we can drive the motor coach up to the front door, you get off the coach and your are instantly into the shrine and that’s a nice experience. But that’s not always the case, sometimes the shrine is a bit of aways from where we are allowed to park, this is happening in some of the European cities, where they are trying to eliminate some of the congestion around some of the sites, I’m thinking particularly of St. Peters, now we can take you to St. Peters, but we have to drop you off about 3 quarters of a mile at a bus parking lot in order for you to hike the rest of the way to St. Peters. Now if you have a walking problem, your tour manager might suggest to you, listen why not a couple of you share a cab, go down to St. Peters and then meet us when we arrive, it’s up to you, but we will try to work with you. There may be some sites that you don’t see that are simply too strenuous, but our tour manager will try to know your abilities and might make a recommendations to you, so we’re sensitive to it, but you should be mindful that if you have a disability, it could be an issue. One of the things is that we get questions is about wheel chairs, wheel chaired bound people are more than welcome on our trip. We have two rules for it, one is that you bring your own foldable wheel chair, bring it on the trip, because it is difficult to rent them, if you are going to from country to country, it is difficult to rent them period. So bring your own wheel chair and other thing we insist on is that you bring a companion who is going to be responsible for your care while you travel, that person needs to be someone who is going to push your wheel chair when you are touring and also who is going to take your wheel chair and put it underneath the coach and take it out from underneath the coach. It’s simply in the matter that the tour manager and the driver might be looking after up to50 other people; they don’t have the ability to give you the attention that you’re going to need. So those who are wheelchair bound you do need to bring a companion who is going to take care of you. We hope that this information has been helpful to you. We hope it answers many of your questions, we’re sure you don’t. If there are other questions you might have, you are invited to ask your host, if you are looking at a particular pilgrimage ask your tour host, whoever is running that tour, if there’s a travel agent involved ask the travel agent, we try to answer as many questions as we can. You need to call our offices at Port Chester, New York at the number on the screen right now. You are welcome to do that, our staff would be happy to answer your other questions. If you are looking for a pilgrimage and you are not sure about which pilgrimage you’re going to go on, you can go to the website of Unitours which you get it on the screen over here, go there and go to the section for individual travelers and then click on search and you’ll be able to see the pilgrimages that we have, that are upcoming, that have invited other people to join and you might be able to join that pilgrimage as well. We thank you for watching, we hope this was helpful to you and we hope that whenever you make your next pilgrimage that will be the tremendous experience for you and be a life changing one for you as well. Thank you for watching.

Frequently Ask Questions

Pilgrimages from outside our parish: our parish priest(s) do not lead or offer pilgrimages so do you offer “open” or “public” pilgrimages that we can join.

Since we have a pilgrimage group leaving for somewhere almost daily, we are sure you can find a pilgrimage that is scheduled to the destination you are interested in. The best way to facilitate this is to visit the link below and search for both the destinations you are seeking, as well as the convenient departure locations across the US. https://unitours.com/travel_catholic.aspx

Wheelchairs: I am wheelchair bound. Can I still go on a pilgrimage?

Everyone is welcome on a Unitours pilgrimage! You must bring your own wheelchair since renting them in your destination country is not as easy and convenient as it is in the US and hotels do not have wheelchairs to “borrow” outside of their facility. We insist that you travel with a companion who you trust can push your chair and assist in getting you on and off the motor coach, as well as navigating the venues you will be visiting. Since Europe and the middle east do not have legislation like ADA, there may be venues that are simply not wheelchair accessible so your Tour Manager will advise when that is the case, and you will be advised if there are options available at that particular venue.

Clothing: I know we are visiting many churches and shrines while on pilgrimage, so what kind of clothing is appropriate?

Daytime attire is casual and comfortable. Wear clothing that can be layered so that you can adjust throughout the day. Sneakers or comfortable soft-sole walking shoes are highly recommended as well. No shorts above the knee, sleeveless shirts, spaghetti strap tops or revealing clothing will be permitted when visiting most of the religious sites. We suggest ladies carry a scarf to throw over their shoulders if they are wearing sleeveless tops. Evening attire is casual if there are any activities planned after dinner.

Weather: What kind of weather can I expect on my pilgrimage?

You may visit www.weather.com for information on specific cities being visited while on your pilgrimage. However, weather is as unpredictable internationally as in the US, so it is best to dress in layers that can be adjusted as the temperature lowers or rises. Plan to carry a small bag or backpack for that extra jacket, windbreaker, or sweater, as well as a bottle of water to stay hydrated. See additional information under Clothing .

Travelers Insurance: Do I really need travelers’ insurance? What does it cover?

Travelers insurance is an option to consider. We do highly recommend its purchase, as it provides peace of mind, that should a problem arise, your investment in your tour is protected. Insurance helps alleviate that uncertainty by planning for those uncertainties if they were ever to materialize. Please feel free to visit https://atc.tripassure.com/main/?welcome=UNIT0010NY%241 for a listing of the cost and benefits of travelers insurance.

Medication: I take prescription medication, what is the best way to travel with it?

You should travel with your medication in your carry-on. You should also bring the prescription orders, with copies in your checked baggage in case you need to refill while abroad.

Passport Safety: What is the safest way to travel with my passport?

We recommend you make a photocopy of your passport and carry it with you, storing it separately from the original and taking a picture of the Information Section with your photo and saving that on your mobile phone as well. Note that your passport must be valid at least six months after the last day of your trip or you will not be permitted to board your initial flight.

Foreign Currency: What is the local currency of the country I am visiting and how much should I bring with me while on pilgrimage?

In your final travel documents, the currency of the country or countries you are visiting will be clearly stated. It is best to avoid bringing large sums of cash, so we suggest bringing a major credit card and/or ATM/Debit card. ATM machines are found in all major international cities in today’s global economy. Have available customer service numbers for all credit card/debit cards you are taking with you, written down ahead of time. NOTE: Cash advances on credit cards require a PIN code. Set up the codes with customer service of your debit card provider prior to travel as well. It is best to let your bank and credit card companies know when you are traveling abroad and inquire about any international fees that may be applied.

Also worth noting:

Traveler checks are NOT recommended as they are not easily exchanged, and it is never recommended revealing substantial amounts of money when making purchases overseas. Lastly, we recommend not packing any valuables in your checked luggage, in the event it is misrouted or damaged in transit.

Airline Accommodations: What kind of flight arrangements can I expect, and do I have the option to upgrade my seat or use airline miles I have accumulated over the years?

We use only reputable, quality international airlines, and convenient flight schedules as possible from the departure city. Our staff will work with you on any seat upgrades you may inquire about, and they will also try to assist in deviations from the planned flight schedule.

Traveling with electronics: Are there special rules regarding traveling with electronic devices?

Yes, it is important to note that all powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft in your carry-on. Therefore, make sure all your electronics; cell phones, laptops, tablets, music players and any other electronics you travel with are fully charged ahead of time if you intend to carry them onboard. You will need to carry with you an electrical converter to charge your devices as below, to charge your devices abroad.

Electrical Appliances: Can I use a hair dryer or curling iron on pilgrimage?

Yes, however, most hotels have hair dryers available It is important to note that the voltage is 220 volts AC in Europe and the middle East, making adapters or converters necessary for electrical items meant to work on 110 volts. Small kits are usually available at local drug stores or on-line.

Phone use out of the US: How hard is it to use my mobile phone outside of the US?

Most major U.S. cell phone carriers offer you the option of choosing a plan that allows you to make international calls while travelling abroad. Make those arrangements prior to your departure to avoid communication issues or excessive international roaming charges which may be applied if you use your phone without an international calling plan.

Hotel Accommodations: What class of hotel can I expect on my pilgrimage?

We typically use clean high-quality, 4-star hotels, centrally located to the sites we will visit and that our local planners are familiar with and have visited. A few religious destinations do not have 4-star hotels and in this case, we use the best three-star hotels available.

Meals: What kind of Breakfast and Dinner can I expect and how are lunches normally managed?

If possible, the hotels provide American style breakfast with both hot and cold options, usually buffet style. Dinner is managed the same way, with dinner menus that offer you options, or at a preselected quality restaurant nearby. Lunches are typically taken along the route and are paid out of pocket by each pilgrim as it has been our experience that most will eat lighter during the day and do not want to waste time sitting down at lunchtime for a big meal.

The Itinerary: Will we only be visiting churches and shrines the whole time or will we also get to see the local cultural sites as well?

We pride ourselves on our ability to blend the spiritual with the cultural on all our pilgrimages. In some areas, we even include a visit to a winery, brewery or specialty shop if requested by your host.

Tour Manager: Will there be someone from Unitours with our group while we are traveling outside the US, or will we have to rely on local guides at each stop?

We provide a Tour Manager on all our standard pilgrimages. This person greets you at the airport after you claim your luggage and will be with you every step of the way throughout your pilgrimage journey. They stay at the same hotels, and ensure you are well cared for. In addition, you will enjoy certified local guides for sightseeing in many cities.

Coach bus amenities: Will our tour bus have air conditioning, WiFi, and ports to charge our phones? Do they have toilets onboard?

We use only top-quality modern coach buses so you can expect W-Fi on them as well as air conditioning. Some may offer a small restroom, but your driver and Tour Manager will remind you of good clean restroom facilities at each stop and the bus will stop at intervals during any longer routes when possible.

Entrance Fees: Do any of the places we visit charge a fee to enter, and what can we expect to pay?

We prearrange the entire itinerary, including the stops which require an entry fee and that is taken care of ahead of your visit so that you do not have to worry. Your Tour Manager will already be familiar with those venues and will have made those arrangements.

Tips: How much should I plan to bring to cover the tips I can expect on my pilgrimage?

Thankfully, we take care of that ahead of time so that you can relax and enjoy your pilgrimage. We clearly state the expected tip amount for the itinerary we have planned and pre-collect that ahead of your departure. It is calculated on the local tip rates and is all inclusive, with the Tour Manager and coach bus driver as well.

Public Restrooms : Should I expect to pay to use public restrooms on my pilgrimage?

Most countries in Europe and the Middle-East (Mexico included) charge a small free to use the public restrooms. It is usually a very small cost (less than 25 cents US) but is the norm in these areas.

Walking : Is there a lot of walking and if so, do I have the option to not participate in all the activities?

Yes, a pilgrimage involves walking from wherever the bus is allowed to drop the group off to the venue. Once at the venue, the Tour Manager will typically guide you through the buildings and adjacent areas so there is a reasonable amount of walking at each venue. The Tour Manager will describe the amount and effort to be expected and in most cases, if there are some who can not physically participate, they will be allowed to relax nearby or in the motor coach.

These awesome people have traveled with me a combined total of 55 times!

Hi, I’m Mountain.

I’m passionate about what I do and I’m very thankful for every moment I get to spend helping people explore our faith through travel.

I’ve personally led 140 group pilgrimages so far, and I show hundreds of people around Catholic Rome every year.

Everyone I’ve worked with, has come back again and again. A few parishes have traveled with me five times, one school has worked with me six times, and I organized sixteen group pilgrimages for Lino Rulli. Many people have been with me on multiple trips, with some traveling with me eight times!

Read on to find out why…

Why these tours are the best

Because all my pilgrimages are custom made, I only lead a few select trips each year. I work directly with the parish, school, or organization to design the perfect trip tailored to their needs. Because I put so much into these trips, I cannot possibly do 20 pilgrimages a year – nor would I want too!

I feel that travel is so important, I offer ways for people to travel for free, and have been known to give away trips via social media contests from time to time.

I put a lot of research into each of my tours. I not only want you to have a rewarding pilgrimage, but also to grow spiritually during our time together. I know in many cases this may be a once in a lifetime trip for you and encourage you to compare our tours with others to find the tour that is right for you. Below are some qualities that make my tours a bit different than other tour companies.

catholic pilgrimage tour companies

Spirituality All tours have an accompanying priest who will celebrate Mass with us each day in the beautiful churches. Since I travel with small groups, you will have more time to spend with our priest throughout the journey.

Small Groups My groups are always small, usually no larger than 27 people, with a few exceptions. Many other tour companies may have up to 50 people traveling on one bus, and sometimes even multiple buses! Traveling in a small group allows your guide to spend more time with you to ensure you are having the best possible experience. With our small group we will be able to sleep and eat in places large tour groups cannot.

No Hidden Fees Everything we do as a group is already included in the advertised price. So you never need to worry about hidden expenses such as departure taxes, fuel, tips or even drinks with meals. Those expenses can really add up, even up to several hundred dollars on top of the advertised price of other tours. Since we always stay in centrally located hotels, you do not have to worry about paying a fee to get into town during your free time either.

Traveling as a Local It is important to me that you get a true feel of the local culture. Throughout the trip we will stay in small charming hotels and eat alongside the locals in intimate restaurants. My tours include plenty of free time and I encourage you to get out on your own and explore the neighborhoods. I want you to experience a city, not just see it from a tour bus. Don’t worry, I will be able to offer you advice on planning your time.

Two Night Stays in Central Hotels Something I try to do with all my itineraries is to allow at least a two night stay in each hotel. I find people get more out of a tour if they have time to relax and explore each town they visit. I definitely prefer quality to quantity and want to be sure you get the most out of each stop. Our hotels will almost always be right in the heart of the city. Many tour companies put their groups in big hotels just outside the city and charge a fee for the ‘optional excursion’ into town.

Meet the young Catholic pilgrims who will walk thousands of miles with the Eucharist this summer

2024 Perpetual Pilgrims

By Jonah McKeown , Peter Pinedo

CNA Staff, Mar 12, 2024 / 15:30 pm

A group of two dozen young Catholic pilgrims will walk thousands of miles across the United States this summer, carrying Jesus Christ in the Eucharist through city streets and the countryside, converging at  the 2024 National Eucharistic Congress.

Collectively, the pilgrims will walk over 6,500 miles and will  traverse four different routes , beginning on opposite sides of the country and meeting in Indianapolis for the  National Eucharistic Congress  July 17–21. Catholics throughout the U.S. are encouraged to  register to join  the pilgrims in walking short sections of the pilgrimages and joining in  numerous other special events  put on by their local diocese.

All between the ages of 19 and 29, the 24 “Perpetual Pilgrims” — six per route — have committed to giving up their summer and braving sun and rain to help the U.S. bishops rededicate the country to Christ in the Eucharist. Accompanied throughout the entire route by priest chaplains, the pilgrims will travel 10-15 miles each day, mostly on foot, while taking part in a minor Eucharistic procession.

The pilgrim application process was  opened last October  and the names of the pilgrims were announced on Monday.

Meet some of the young pilgrims who will be bringing Christ through your neighborhood this summer, beginning Pentecost weekend, May 17-19.

The  Seton Route,  which begins in Connecticut and is named for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, will pass through a number of the country’s largest cities as well as the  nation’s oldest diocese,  Baltimore.

Amayrani Higueldo Sanchez, a recent nursing school graduate from Philadelphia, found herself with a few unstructured months after her graduation, and at the same time, during her busy nursing school experience, she says she continually felt a tug to spend more time with Jesus in adoration.

So when the opportunity arose to drop everything and spend months traveling with the Eucharistic Jesus across the country, she said it felt like a providential way to spend more time with Jesus and encourage others to do the same.

Higueldo, a native of Acapulco, Mexico, who has lived in the Philadelphia area since age 7, said she is especially looking forward to bringing the Eucharist through the major cities in the East. She described a powerful encounter she had with the Eucharist while on a retreat as a teenager and expressed a hope to bring a similar experience to those participating along the route.

“I remember just the piercing gaze of Our Lord. It just pierced everything in my body and my soul. And I remember just being, feeling like, seen, loved, and just redeemed for the first time in my life,” she recalled.

“And really, it just changed the whole trajectory of my life, just that gaze of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. And really, I was restored in that moment, and I sought the sacrament of reconciliation right after. And I haven’t been the same since. I used to be so shy, so I didn’t talk to anyone. I was deep in sin. And now I’m like, you’re talking to people and going on this Eucharistic pilgrimage, talking to many, many people. And really, it just really changed my life.”

Higueldo, who has worked in youth ministry at her home parish for the past seven years, said she is looking forward to witnessing to her faith in the Eucharist in small ways, especially when she gets the opportunity to speak with her fellow Spanish speakers along the route and in her hometown.

“I know the Lord wants to pour out a lot of graces on this pilgrimage to so many. So being able to bring that … here at home in Philly to a lot of the parishes that I know, it’s going to be amazing to witness and be able to witness — a front-row seat to the graces that the Lord wants to pour out,” Higueldo said.

The Marian Route

Marco Rubio draws attention to pro-life strategy, spike in church vandalism

Matthew Heidenreich, a native Ohioan attending college in Alabama, will be walking the northern Marian Route,  which begins at the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

Heidenreich told CNA that his personal relationship with Christ began at a Eucharistic pilgrimage while attending adoration at a Catholic summer camp. It was there during an adoration hour out in nature that he first came to a “place of surrender” to Christ.

He said he is looking forward to helping give “someone else permission to let the Lord do the same thing in their heart, opening up their heart to receive what the Lord wants to give so freely.”

He also said he is excited to allow his words and actions to bear witness to his love for the Eucharist, with the opportunity to show thousands of people along the way what importance the Eucharist has.

“I think just seeing a group of six to eight young people who have given everything for a summer to follow Christ speaks deeply,” Heidenreich said.

“If someone is willing to follow something, to leave the things behind that you could have done, leave behind the security and to follow someone or something, that says something powerful.”

Kai Weiss, a 27-year-old native of Germany now doing graduate studies in Washington, D.C., said the idea of becoming a perpetual pilgrim “seemed ideal from the beginning.” He told CNA that the experience would combine his love for the Eucharist with his love of hiking and travel.

“I’m really looking forward to what kind of surprises Jesus himself has in store,” the  Marian Route  pilgrim said.

Coming from a region in Germany known for its Eucharistic processions, Weiss said it brings him joy to see the concept take more of a hold in the U.S., “where I think it is much more needed.”

He said he also loves the idea of people across the nation coming together — during a contentious election year marked by division — to profess a shared love for Jesus, present in the Eucharist, as a “unifying moment that can bring healing to the country.”

“Jesus in the sacrament — he awaits all of us, regardless of which party we vote for, where we come from,” he noted.

The Junipero Serra Route

Jaella Mac Au. Credit: National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

The longest of the four routes, the  route named for St. Junipero Serra , will begin with a dramatic procession across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and will see the pilgrims traverse the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains. (Specially designed vans will transport the Eucharist and the pilgrims over certain portions of all four routes.)

Jaella Mac Au, a Georgia native and undergraduate student, will be walking this route. Mac Au said she had planned to look for Catholic missionary work following her graduation, but when the opportunity arose to go on this pilgrimage and God seemed to be calling her there, she accelerated her plans. Ultimately, she said, embarking on this two-month journey meant delaying an important internship.

Despite the sacrifice involved, Mac Au said that throughout the discernment process of becoming a pilgrim, she has come to find “security in the insecurity” — not knowing exactly what her future holds but trusting that God has it in control.

Mac Au requested prayers for herself and her fellow pilgrims that they would rely on God’s love and grace throughout the challenging pilgrimage experience and not merely on their own abilities. She said she views the pilgrimage as a transformative experience that aligns with her desire to serve in a missionary capacity.

“It’s about the journey, not the destination, which sounds so silly, but I think if we just condense it, that’s really what it’s all about,” she said.

“Through Jesus in the Eucharist, it’s such just a tangible reminder that the Lord desires to love us in a very humane, humanlike way … he actually desires to continue to seek out humanity and meet them exactly where they’re at,” she said.

The Juan Diego Route:

Charlie McCullough. Credit: National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Charlie McCullough, 22, will be walking  the southern Juan Diego Route,  beginning in Brownsville, Texas, just a few minutes from the U.S.-Mexico border.

A college senior about to finish his final semester at Texas A&M University, McCullough told CNA that he had a personal encounter with Christ after receiving the Eucharist at a Wednesday evening Mass his freshman year.

“I very vividly remember the spot in the church where I kneeled and prayed, and something was entirely different from that moment forward,” he explained. “I realized in that moment that there was a place inside of me that the Lord rested and was his home. That was deeper than anything else that I’ve ever experienced in the world.”

“From that moment, I kept coming back to daily Mass, and I kept coming back to the adoration chapel. And just from there, it began, this relationship of deep love with Jesus Christ, all because I realized that he was already living in me, and I was just starting to get to know him because of the gift of the Eucharist.”

McCullough said he is open to God radically altering the course of his life during the pilgrimage. Although he is getting ready to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime, cross-country journey, he said that he is most looking forward to being able to help people encounter those small, “seemingly insignificant” interactions with Christ in the Eucharist that “radically change everything.”

“My hope for the pilgrimage is that every person that we encounter has something stir inside of them that makes them question: ‘Why do I feel differently when I was encountered by this procession? … What if that is truly the body and blood of Jesus Christ?’” he said.

“I have full confidence that Jesus Christ is truly present, body, blood, soul, and divinity in the Eucharist and if the pilgrimage simply stirs questions in the hearts of those that we encounter, I know that those questions will be answered with the truth.”

Shayla Elm. Credit: National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Joining McCollough on the Juan Diego Route is Shayla Elm, a North Dakotan who works for Christ in the City, a Catholic ministry to the homeless in Denver.

Elm said despite being a lifelong Catholic, she has benefited greatly already in recent months from the Catholic formation that the pilgrims have been provided to prepare them for the pilgrimage. The pilgrims have been given weekly Zoom formation sessions and went on retreat together in February.

“We’re all coming from different places, all have different gifts, and I just think it’s really exciting to get to walk with other young adults who are on fire for the Lord,” she said.

Elm emphasized the central role of the Eucharist in her faith journey, highlighting how it has always been a core aspect of her life and how she believes her vocation is deeply tied to the Eucharist.

“I’ve just known for a while that wherever my life will go, whatever my path is, vocationally, wherever I’m going, the Eucharist will be at the center, period,” she explained.

First construction period

At the end of the 19th century, only two Catholic churches existed in Moscow: the Saint Louis des Français church for the French population and the St. Peter and Paul church for the Polish parishioners. As the congregation for the Polish church had increased to around 30,000 members, the existing buildings were too small. Following the submission of a petition to the Governor-General of Moscow, the local council voted for a new church in 1894. Construction of a new church was permitted with several conditions, including two pertinent to the building site: the structure was to be built away from the old city centre, and was not to be located in the vicinity of any Orthodox sacred sites.

Bearing in mind the council's requirements, on 16 May 1895 the parish purchased a 10 hectare (22 acre) site on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street, then located on the city outskirts and surrounded by fields and vegetable gardens. Today, the site is in the Central Administrative Okrug, outside of the Garden Ring road defining the old walled city, just beyond the Moscow Metro's Koltsevaya Line, and is surrounded by 20th century urban development. The purchase of the land was funded by donations, and cost 10,000 rubles in gold (roughly US$7,200,000 as of 2012 [update] ). The purchase agreement and a full list of donations are today kept in the city archives of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Moscow)

A further condition imposed by the city read as follows: "In the light of the two existing Roman Catholic churches, the future church shall be larger, with a cross on the gable, but without spires and exterior sculpture". The plans for the building were produced by a Russian architect of Polish descent, Tomasz Bohdanowicz-Dworzecki. Although his plan did not follow the council's latter condition, it was accepted. The plan provided seating for up to 5,000 worshippers. Groundbreaking was in 1899, and construction took place from 1901 to 1911. The construction cost was 290,000 roubles in gold (roughly US$207,000,000 as of 2012 [update] ), much of which was donated by members of the Polish parish of Moscow. More funding came from Catholic parishes throughout Russia, Poland and Byelorussia.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Moscow)

In the filthy, wretched Malaya Gruzinskaya (Little Georgian) Street, forsaken by God and the city, there rose the wonderful, highly artistic solidity of the new Roman Catholic church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Holy Virgin Mary. Tremendous in magnitude and height, ... with a plenty of conning turrets and towers with crosses. The new cathedral makes a deep impression ... [Every detail] looks impressive and eminent: Not the slightest stylistic flaw could be seen or detected.

From 1911 to 1917, money was collected for interior furnishings, which were relatively sparse apart from the impressive main altar. (These original furnishings remained until the 1930s.) Parts of the draft plan were abandoned: the floor was not constructed from marble as intended, but poured from plain concrete; outside there were no pinnacles on the façade. Writings vary on when the pinnacles were built: some claim they were built in 1923, but others argue that they were not completed until the renovation of the cathedral in 1999. Observers that argue for an earlier construction date state that they were damaged during World War II and left dismantled for some time.

Organ and bells

The present pipe organ is one of the largest in Russia and the third since the church's foundation. The first organ was taken by the state in 1938 and the second, an electronic organ with 60 stops, was installed as part of the renovations in 1999. It was donated by the American charity "Aid to the Church in Russia", headed by priest Marcel Guarnizo, who received consecration as a deacon during the renovation in 1997. The electronic organ was replaced by a pipe organ during 2002–2005.

The cathedral's pipe organ was built in 1955 by Orgelbau Kuhn AG of Männedorf, Switzerland, for the Reformed Evangelical Basel Münster Cathedral in Basel, Switzerland. The Swiss cathedral donated the organ, dismantled it in 2002, and all pipes but without the largest— Nr. 65 principal bass 32 ' , 10 m (32 ft) long—were transferred to Moscow. The pipes were transported wrapped in new garments donated by the people of Basel, which were later distributed to Moscow's poor. The installation of the pipe organ in Moscow was performed by the Orgelbau Schmid company from Kaufbeuren, Germany, headed by Gerhard Schmid, who refused payment for his work. During the work, Schmid was killed in a fall from a scaffold on 9 September 2004; his son Gunnar finished the work.

1330

The original 10-metre, 32' pipe stayed in Switzerland and was built into a new organ in the Münster Cathedral, which belongs to the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance. This pipe, capable of reproducing a tone of 16.35 Hz, the bass note C0 four octaves below middle C, was recreated in Moscow and added to the cathedral's organ in 2009.

1054

The five church bells are located on the cathedral's roof behind a tripartite screen of lancet arches on the left side of the façade. They were poured by the Felczyński bell foundry in Przemyśl, Poland and donated by bishop Wiktor Skworc The bells are electronically activated. The largest weighs 900 kilograms (2,000 lb) and bears the name "Our Lady of Fátima". The other bells are named, from the smallest to the largest: "John Paul II"; "St. Jude", named after the patron saint of archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz; "Anniversary-2000"; and "St. Victor", named after the patron saint of Bishop Wiktor Skworc.

21st century

On 11 February 2002, Pope John Paul II created the administration for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Moscow and named Apostolic Administrator Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz as archbishop and metropolitan. However, this decision was criticised by Patriarch Alexy II, who called it "unfriendly", as he believed the Roman Catholic Church saw Russia as a field for missionary activity. At the same time, the Church of the Immaculate Conception acquired the status of cathedral of the archdiocese. In March 2002, members of the cathedral and Catholics from other European cities participated in a rosary led by the Pope via video conference. Since the reopening, many services take place daily in the cathedral. The main liturgical language for Masses is Russian, but services are also held in Polish, English, French, Spanish, Korean, Latin and Armenian (based on an Armenian Rite).

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Moscow)

The re-installed organ—with 74 stops, 4 manuals and 5,563 pipes—was consecrated by Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Moscow on 16 January 2005. The mass was followed by the opening concert for the First International Festival for Organ Music. The month-long festival saw several organ concerts in the cathedral. The closing concert was performed by chief organist James Edward Goettsche from St. Peter's Basilica. Organ and church music concerts take place regularly in the cathedral; entry is normally free, except for selected concerts, for which admission is by ticket. A service in remembrance of those killed in the 2010 Polish Air Force Tu-154 crash was held on 12 April 2010.

One of the best Moscow music-hall

Nothing special for European, but exceptional for general Moscow architecture. Opened in 1999 after restoration it remains the best concert hall in Moscow because of acoustic and presence of Kuhn's organ (the biggest in Russia, still without 32' in pedal). Ticket to the concert is quite expensive (€10-15), but other time entrance is free.

It's been built recently, and if you're from Europe or Latin America, there's nothing to see here. Very different from local orthodox churches though

This is the biggest catholic church in Russia and consists in a magnific red-brick gothic cathedral. I went there on Sunday to the 10pm mass but unfortunately was late! Then I kept inside for some minutes and realized that another mass was about to begin at 11:30h. It was a lovely children mass , with a very smiley and funny Sister playing and singing. I felt very impressed with the huge numbers of catholics in Moscow because both masses were very crowded and a third one was about to begin. After that , I took a walk around the cathedral and could see a "Khatchkar" (armenian cross) in honor of the victims of Armenian Genocide and also the statue of Mother Thereza of Calcuta. Definitely , worths a visit.

While not beeing too religeos, i love this place so much for it's patience and beauty. For sunday concerts it could be crowdy, but it worth the music, sound and ambience.

Just outside the broad Great Garden Ring, near the Moscow ZOO is located this pearl of neo-gothic style of architecture ,the Catholic Cathedral of Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. It is one of the only two Catholic churches in Moscow and is largest in Russia. We were delighted with the sight of this marvelous Cathedral whose appearance ressembles a lot at those of Westminster Abbey and Milan Cathedral. Many spires and crosses adorn this building built from red brick and formed of the three aisles. There are the three naves and an apse with the impressive main altar beneath. The organ and church bells are present also, within the walls of Cathedral. Beautiful religious building, that ought to be visited when in Moscow.
