Song You Need to Know: Ariana Grande, ‘7 Rings’

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

If anyone told you this time last year that Ariana Grande would drop a song that simultaneously samples  The Sound of Music and jacks Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag,” would you have believed it? We’ve come a long way from the bubblegum-R&B of her early years.

“7 Rings” is a sexy, feelin’-myself bop inspired by an actual event: a champagne-fueled Tiffany’s shopping spree Grande went on after her breakup with Pete Davidson. She brought along “six of [her] bitches,” as the song goes, and everyone took home matching diamond rings. The song pulls off a series of pop-trap moves, as Grande toys with an Atlanta flow over pink-hued hi-hats. It’s confident, fun and a huge leap for an artist who has quickly gone from her generation’s great pop vocalist to, potentially, its great pop star.

Of course, leaps like that can come at a cost. Everyone from Soulja Boy to Princess Nokia to 2 Chainz has taken issue with the song and video, alleging that Grande has copped certain flows, songs and visuals. When it comes to the hawking of black music in particular, songs like this one raise a bigger question of who is allowed to borrow from whom. Would a black pop star be able to get away with the same type of boldness?

Grande can and should engage with those conversations at some point, but whatever the case, “7 Rings” is dangerously fun, and as deliriously intoxicating as the champagne at Tiffany’s with all your best bitches.

Ariana Grande and rapper 2 Chainz had teamed up for the remix of her smash hit "7 rings", which was released only two weeks prior on January 31, 2019.

Ariana had teased the track with a simple tweet on the eve of its release.

Grande described the song as a "friendship anthem" that "evolves" from previous single " Thank U, Next ", while embracing a new chapter. [2] She opens up about how her breakup with comedian Pete Davidson led her to treating her friends to a shopping spree where she bought seven matching friendship rings for her and her friends. [3] [4]

Commercially, the song debuted at number one in 15 countries, including the United States, being her second number-one single, following " Thank U, Next ", featured on the same album.

A live version of the song is featured on K Bye For Now (SWT Live) , which was released on December 23, 2019.

Background [ ]

In an interview for Billboard , Grande said: "We needed some retail therapy. You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring." [5] After that day, Tony Jabaly, who sold the rings to Grande, posted on Instagram a picture with Grande with the caption: "Proud to have made the sale of the 7 Rings", later archived and changed to "It was my pleasure today to work with Ariana Grande. Such a sweetheart person." [6] [7]

Following the release of " Thank U, Next ", a supposed track listing of the album was leaked which included "7 Rings". [8] Grande hinted the song several times on her Instagram stories. [9] The instrumental of the song was used in the trailer for the "Thank U, Next" music video. [10] On October 26, 2018, Grande posted on Instagram a picture of her at the Dangerous Woman Tour with the caption: "u like .... my hair? gee thanks... jus bought it". [11] The song was confirmed on December 1, 2018. [12]

On January 3, 2019, Grande confirmed on Twitter that the song would be the second single from Thank U, Next . [13] The song's release date and cover art were revealed on January 10, 2019.

The song samples " My Favorite Things " performed by Julie Andrews from the 1965 film The Sound of Music . [14] It also interpolates The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Gimme The Loot" in the bridge. [15]

A remix with American rapper 2 Chainz was released on February 1, 2019. [16]

On February 9, 2023, a snippet from the sessions leaked. A small snippet of the behind the scenes clip of 7 Rings had leaked on July 16, 2023. The full behind the scenes footage leaked on September 11, 2023. On November 2, 2023, short previews of the stems from the studio version of the Grammy Awards leaked.

On January 26, 2024, the explicit version of 7 Rings has been removed from Apple Music and Spotify. If you'd click on the song on Spotify you would listen to the remix.

Ariana Grande channeled her inner Cher from 'Clueless' in one of 6 outfits from her new tour

  • Ariana Grande kicked off her Sweetener World Tour on Monday night in Albany, New York.
  • She had several costume changes during the show, all styled by frequent collaborator Law Roach.
  • Her most striking outfit of the night was a plaid ensemble that seemed to channel Cher Horowitz from "Clueless."
  • Other outfits included a pink ruffled ensemble and a black PVC minidress.

Insider Today

When it comes to her street style, Grande has become known for her iconic casual-chic style and oversized, puffy jackets. During the opening night of the Sweetener World Tour on Monday in Albany, New York, Grande proved her on-stage style is a little more experimental.

The most striking outfit of the night was a plaid ensemble that offered a bit of '90s nostalgia.

The mostly yellow number seemed to be channeling Grande's inner Cher Horowitz, as it looked like a 2019 update to the iconic plaid outfit Alicia Silverstone wears in "Clueless."

It wouldn't be the first time the singer has channeled classic teen movies, as she previously recreated scenes from early-2000s classics like "Mean Girls" and "Bring it On" for her "Thank U, Next" music video.

Grande debuted several new outfits throughout the opening night of her highly-anticipated tour, which was styled by Grande's frequent collaborator, Law Roach.

She started the show in a red belted ensemble with her signature thigh-high boots while hitting the stage for "God is a Woman."

She then changed into a pink outfit with large ruffled sleeves and a matching half-skirt, which she wore for hits like "Side to Side" and "7 Rings."

Next up was a purple number with matching saggy thigh-high boots she wore while performing songs like "Breathin'" and "Needy."

Grande also wore a bold orange ensemble with semi-sheer boots for fan-favorites like "The Light is Coming."

She then wore a billowing black PVC minidress for "No Tears Left to Cry."

Grande then ended the show by singing her massive hit "Thank U, Next" in her most colorful look of the night.

Ariana Grande's "Sweetener" world tour kicked off on Monday night in Albany, New York — and while the pop star changed outfits a whopping seven times during the show, she kept her ponytail and thigh-high boots throughout. After all, as her stylist Law Roach recently told Page Six Style, Grande’s lampshade look is “iconic.” For a performance of "7 Rings," the 25-year-old singer sported white patent leather boots, a pink bra and skirt with pearl details and a customized jacket featuring the track’s title.

The story behind Ariana Grande ‘s “7 Rings” is one of modern pop legend: On a particularly difficult day after breaking up with fiancé Pete Davidson, Ari took six of her best friends to Tiffany & Co. and treated her besties to a champagne-fueled shopping spree that resulted in the purchase of seven diamond engagement-turned-friendship rings. On the chauffeured drive back to Ariana’s sprawling New York penthouse, singer-songwriter Njomza suggested: “Hey. We need to write a song about this” — and the biggest pop banger of 2019 (thus far) was born.

The song — which was released as the second single from Ariana’s fifth studio album Thank U, Next — was the pop superstar’s second consecutive No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 , where it reigned atop the chart for a total of five weeks in a row. Cleverly interpolating “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music , “7 Rings” is a grandiose flex all about healing from heartbreak with the help of the shiny baubles that have always been a girl’s best friend (not to mention a girl’s actual best friends).

Check out the braggadocious lyrics and video for “7 Rings” below.

Been through some bad shit, I should be a sad bitch Who woulda thought it’d turn me to a savage? Rather be tied up with calls and not strings Write my own checks like I write what I sing, yeah (Yeah)

My wrist, stop watchin’, my neck is flossin’ Make big deposits, my gloss is poppin’ You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

Wearing a ring, but ain’t gon’ be no “Mrs.” Bought matching diamonds for six of my bitches I’d rather spoil all my friends with my riches Think retail therapy my new addiction

Whoever said money can’t solve your problems Must not have had enough money to solve ’em They say, “Which one?” I say, “Nah, I want all of ’em” Happiness is the same price as red-bottoms

My smile is beamin’, my skin is gleamin’ The way it shine, I know you’ve seen it (You’ve seen it) I bought a crib just for the closet Both his and hers, I want it, I got it, yeah

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Baby) You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it (Oh yeah) I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

Yeah, my receipts, be lookin’ like phone numbers If it ain’t money, then wrong number Black card is my business card The way it be settin’ the tone for me I don’t mean to brag, but I be like, “Put it in the bag,” yeah When you see them racks, they stacked up like my ass, yeah Shoot, go from the store to the booth Make it all back in one loop, give me the loot Never mind, I got the juice Nothing but net when we shoot Look at my neck, look at my jet Ain’t got enough money to pay me respect Ain’t no budget when I’m on the set If I like it, then that’s what I get, yeah

I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Yeah) I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it (Oh yeah, yeah) You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (Yeah)

Ariana Grande's '7 Rings' Music Video, Explained

Maggie Clancy

If there's one thing Ariana Grande is the queen of, it's using social media to hype up her releases. The singer unleashed her single "7 Rings" late in the evening on January 17, 2019, and prior to its release, Grande posted hints and snippets of the "7 Rings" music video. These included snaps of her and her pup Toulouse surrounded by women bathed in fuchsia lighting. Fans could barely contain their excitement for the video, and once she released it, theories abounded as to what exactly "7 Rings" means.

After the release of the video, Grande revealed a new tiny tattoo on her palm which was meant to read "7 Rings" in Japanese characters. Fans quickly pointed out that the tattoo in fact reads "shichirin," a type of barbeque grill. Apparently, the pop star couldn't stand the pain and intentionally left out a few key symbols. Luckily, Grande is actually a "huge fan of tiny barbeque grills."

Like the " thank u, next" video , "7 Rings" is laden with subtext. Using the melody from  The Sound of Music 's "My Favorite Things," Grande flaunts her riches, singing, "I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it." She hints at her ability to provide for herself and whatever man happens to be on her arm - like she did with Pete Davidson - and she does it looking her best.

Grande Took Friends On A Jewelry Shopping Spree After Her Split With Pete Davidson

Grande Took Friends On A Jewelry Shopping Spree After Her Split With Pete Davidson

After Grande and Davidson ended their whirlwind romance, Grande took six of her best girl friends out shopping for rings. Five of the six recipients - Tayla Parx, Victoria Monet, Njomza, Alexa Luria, and Courtney Chipolone - make a cameo in the video. The squad got matching rings from Tiffany & Co.   after Grande ended the engagement.

"You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne?" Grande asked during an interview with  Billboard  at the end of 2018, "They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring."

She Might Be Making A Jab At Ex Pete Davidson

She Might Be Making A Jab At Ex Pete Davidson

"I bought a crib just for the closet, both his and hers, I want it, I got it, yeah," Grande sings. While this could be viewed as a straight flex, it could also be interpreted as a small slight towards her ex, Pete Davidson.

When the two were together, Davidson often joked about how she paid rent on their $60,000 a month New York City penthouse while he was simply in charge of stocking the fridge . Could Grande be brushing off Davidson and suggesting that she didn't buy the place for them, but rather simply for the ample amount of closet space? It isn't an outright callout, but given the two's penchant for making subtle jabs at each other, it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Grande Hints At The Drama At Her Life - And Rises Above It

Grande Hints At The Drama At Her Life - And Rises Above It

As the song opens, Grande sings, "Been through some bad sh*t, I should be a sad b*tch/ Who woulda thought it'd turn me into a savage?" This is an obvious nod to her tumultuous private life. In May 2018, Grande broke up with longtime boyfriend Mac Miller and quickly started dating SNL  regular Pete Davidson. Miller lost his life on September 7, 2018, after an accidental overdose, and in October 2018, Grande and Davidson broke off their engagement.

Grande seems to have risen like a phoenix from the ashes - or at least that is what her lyrics tell us. At one point she croons to the tune of The Sound of Music's  "My Favorite Things," singing, "Wearing a ring but ain't going to be no missus/ buy matching diamonds for six of my b*tches/ I'd rather spoil all my friends with my riches/ Think retail therapy's my new addiction."

Njomza Convinced Grande To Write The Song

Njomza Convinced Grande To Write The Song

After Grande and her friends went on their Tiffany's shopping spree, Grande's friend Njomza suggested that she write a song about the experience. A fan on Twitter asked Grande about the song, and she explained part of its origin, saying, "it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the stu njomza was like ‘b*tch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon."

The massive champagne tower acts as a reference to the fun-filled, bubbly-fueled shopping trip. Njomza also worked with Grande's ex , Mac Miller, before he passed away in September 2018.

Her Friend Tayla Parx Helped Grande Put Together 'thank u, next'

Her Friend Tayla Parx Helped Grande Put Together 'thank u, next'

If Tayla Parx looks familiar, it's because she is more than one of Grande's best friends - she is also a collaborator. The performer helped Grande pen "thank u, next," and even appeared with her on  Ellen  to sing the song.

"thank u, next," isn't Parx's only claim to fame. The multi-hyphenate also helped write Panic! At The Disco's hit "High Hopes" and "Love Lies" by Khalid and Normani. She also has some acting credits under her belt and has appeared in  Hairspray!, Everybody Hates Chris,  and  Gilmore Girls.

Victoria Monet Also Helped Out With 'thank u, next'

Victoria Monet Also Helped Out With 'thank u, next'

Just like Tayla Parx, Grande's friend Victoria Monet is another heavy hitter in the music world. Monet helped make 'thank u, next' happen, and like Parx, she also appeared on  Ellen  when Grande performed the song back in December 2018.

Monet has written for the likes of Kanye West, Nas, and Kendrick Lamar, to name a few.

Some Of The Women In The Video Are Grande's Lifelong Friends

Alexa Luria and Grande go way back - all the way to  elementary school . The two have remained close through Grande's meteoric rise to fame. She was also featured in the 'thank u, next' video. Grande values her friendship with Luria so much that she has the initial 'A' tattooed in her honor.

Another longtime friend, Courtney Chipolone, makes an appearance in the video. Grande also has a tattoo to represent Chipolone - her name is tattooed on the singer's knee .

Kacey Musgraves tour how to buy tickets online

Kacey Musgraves has revealed a deep itinerary for her “Deeper Well” tour, with a run through U.S. arenas set for the fall after she hits Europe in the spring. The North American tour will have her topping a triple bill, with Father John Misty opening the entire way, and Nickel Creek and Lord Huron trading places in the third spot.

The three-month U.S. leg starts just after Labor Day with a Sept. 4 show in State College, Penn., wrapping up with a two-night hometown stand at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Dec. 6-7.

Father John Misty and Nickel Creek will open all the U.S. shows from the September kickoff through the L.A. Forum shows in early October. Thereafter, as the tour hits the Northeast and South through its early December Nashville finale, it’ll be Father John Misty and Lord Huron in the opening slots.

Meanwhile, it’s Madi Diaz slated to open the shorter run of nine European dates. Those two weeks’ worth of shows begin April 28 in Dublin and wrap up May 14 with a gig at London’s roundhouse. (See the full list of dates, below.)

Tickets for the AEG Presents-promoted tour go on sale next week. An American Express cardholder presale starts March 5 at 10 a.m. local time. The general on-sale time is March 8 at 10 a.m. local time. Resale tickets are also available on Stubhub , VividSeats and Seatgeek .

Additionally, Musgraves released a second preview track from her “Deeper Well” album Thursday, titled “Too Good to Be True.” The full album comes out March 15.

Musgraves is set to appear on “Saturday Night Live” March 2. (Chances are she won’t be naked again, although the mere possibility may drive tune-in.)
