Regal Princess Itineraries

Regal princess review, review of regal princess.

The 2014-built Regal Princess cruise ship is the 2nd Royal-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet , with fleetmates Royal Princess (2013), Majestic Princess (2017),  Sky Princess (2019), Enchanted Princess (2021) and Discovery Princess (2022). From the same class is also the P&O UK 's liner Britannia (2015).

The vessel (IMO number 9584724) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310674000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Regal Princess cruise ship

The 3600-passenger ship Regal Princess is among the largest cruise ships sailing the seas. The vessel was built at Fincantieri shipyard, Italy and has 19 decks. Regal Princess features an impressive number (16) of bars and restaurants and a luxury spa. Regal offers unique features to her guests, such as a glass-enclosed walkway over the ocean known as the SeaWalk.

Princess Cruises new ship design

The first sailing season of Regal Princess started in the Mediterranean on October 17, 2014, when the ship headed for Fort Lauderdale, FL. A curious fact is that in 2016 Princess Cruises starred in a new 6-part ITV documentary "The Cruise". On March 3 the show aired for the first time in the United Kingdom. It focused on the life of cruise passengers and crew as they sailed through Northern Europe and Russia onboard the Regal Princess. The line featured in a TV documentary for the second year. In 2014, sister ship Royal Princess was featured in reality show "The Cruise Ship".

Decks and Cabins

Regal Princess staterooms (1780 total, in 38 categories) include 350 Suites, 1088 Balcony and 342 Inside cabins, in 38 categories. The ship has no Oceanview cabins. Most outside accommodations (1438) have private step-out balconies. The ship also has 36 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2 plus 210 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

There are many for-fee dining options onboard Regal Princess, but guests who would rather not pay are offered enough quality and variety to satisfy. Those who prefer tradition will choose between the three main dining rooms: Allegro, Concerto and Symphony.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Lido restaurant)

Horizon Court and Horizon Bistro are the buffet options, providing a more casual vibe. Passengers who want to have lunch in their swimsuits can take a burger from Trident Grill or a slice at Prego Pizzeria. Indoors, Alfredo's features delicious calzones, salads and thin-crust pizza. Allegro Dining Room is the only option for free dinner with traditional set dining. Passengers can eat at 5:45 p.m. or 8:15 p.m. Allegro's menus are diverse and offer a soup or salad course, an appetizer, pasta and an entree. There is also a special dessert menu.

Follows the complete list of Regal Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Sabatini’s Restaurant (Italian specialty restaurant, a la carte: offers 3-course Italian/seafood menu; open between 6 p.m. -11 p.m., reservations recommended)
  • Symphony Restaurant (midship location; offers “Anytime Dining” for Dinner; with “Wine Cellar” area serving “Wine Maker’s Dinner” for $40, capacity 12 guests)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The bulk of performance action takes place in Regal's Princess Theater, situated on decks 6 and 7. The theatre features palladium-style seating; it's deep, and if you don't arrive early, you might find yourself in the back, which is far from the stage. However, there aren't any obstacles or bad sightlines.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Theater Lounge)

The show lounge doesn't offer tables or drink holders, so if you order one preshow or come with a drink, you'll have to hold it. The entertainment is excellent and varied, with a beat that is quite innovative. In addition to the production shows, the Princess Theatre hosts other acts including vocalists and instrumentalists.

Follows the complete list of Regal Princess lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

  • The Piazza Atrium (3-deck open floor area; features live performances entertainment and lobby Bar Piazza)

Regal Princess Wiki

The shipbuilding order was placed on February 17, 2010. The shipbuilding contract with Fincantieri was signed on May 4, 2010.The vessel's keel was laid down in August 2012. The launch (float-out from drydock at Monfalcone ) was on March 26, 2013. Sea trials were in the Adriatic Sea (April 16-21, 2014). The boat was officially delivered on May 11, 2014.

The 4-day pre-Inaugural Cruise (May 16-20, 2014) was to Kotor Montenegro from Trieste Italy . The itinerary was operated prior to the Maiden Voyage from Venice (May 20, 2014).

Fun facts: It takes 3 million man-hours to build a Royal-class cruise ship. For its construction are used 37,000 tons of steel. For instance, about 12,000 tons of steel were used for constructing the Disney Concert Hall in  Los Angeles . The paint used for the vessel is 95,000 gallons (360,000 L), which is two times more than the quantity consumed for Golden Gate Bridge (re-painted annually). The electrical cables wiring the whole vessel are long 2484 ml (4000 km) which is enough to link  NYC  with  LA .

Regal was Carnival Corporation 's first liner with installed  Ocean Medallion  technology. The ship also hosted the company's largest gambling/slot tournament (USD 200,000) via a partnership with Scientific Games Corporation. The themed "Monopoly Cruise for Cash" onboard casino campaign was offered throughout 2018 (fleetwide). It culminated on the Regal ship in December, during the 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise (itinerary Dec 9-16) roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to St Maarten, Princess Cays and St Thomas.

In July 2019, Carnival Corporation placed to the Finnish marine engine producer Wartsila an equipment order for delivery and installation of a waste gasification system on Regal Princess. The technology is based on a self-fuelling thermal decomposition unit that provides safe (and sustainable) disposal of vessel's waste (contaminated, dry-burnable and hazardous materials) which is usually offloaded at seaport facilities. The new gasification system recovers energy from ship's waste heat (produced by thermal destruction) which additionally results in lower green gas emissions and energy savings. The system reduces vessel’s waste to ~5% (of its original volume) and produces a sterilized material (BioChar) which is recycled within the unit as fuel.

The vessel's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 46F, 2x 12V and 2x 14V) with combined power output 62,4 MW (83,700 hp). The propulsion system is based on two azipods with combined power output 18 MW (24,000 hp).

The ship has Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6224, volume 142714 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 12193 tons, LOA length 330 m, beam 38 m (max width 47 m/including the Navigation Bridge's wings), max draught 8,6 m.

Top Tips for Planning a European Cruise Vacation

regal princess european cruise

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Why Plan a European Cruise

Europe is a marvelous cruise destination for several reasons. A European cruise can be a great vacation option for a first-timer or for someone who has been to Europe many times. A European cruise is an especially good fit for travelers who want to see the history, art, and natural beauty of Europe without having to navigate the roads and train stations or spend a lot of time planning where to stay and where to dine.

Here are several other reasons you should plan a European cruise:

Important Sites Are Accessible

First, many of the most popular sites in Europe are accessible to cruise travelers either on ocean-going or river cruise ships. Most of Europe's major cities were built right on the water and are impressive to see from the deck of a ship. The few sites not accessible from the water are usually only a short bus or train ride away.

Next, Europe is relatively compact and travelers can see many cities or sites efficiently. Most cruise ships sail at night and arrive in the next port of call early in the morning, allowing passengers a full day to see the sights. Cruise ships offer guided tours to most of the important sites in each port, or passengers can explore on their own. Either is more efficient than trying to find a place to park a car or navigate between cities on your own.

Unlike a bus tour, independent driving vacation, or train trip, you only have to unpack once on your ocean or European river cruise. The comfort factor also applies to those who are somewhat reluctant to tour countries where English is not the primary language. Although many Europeans speak English, knowing the native language is not as important when you are cruising as it is when traveling independently.

Costs Are Economical

Currently, the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and European currencies is not good for travelers (although some currencies are better than they were in recent years). European hotels and restaurants are much more expensive than comparable North American accommodations or food. Since most cruise ship fares and onboard prices are based on the U.S. dollar, the cost does not seem as high as when items are priced with the local currency.

There are only three possible downsides of a European cruise vacation . The first is you will not have much interaction with the local citizens without some effort on your part. If you are eating and sleeping on the ship and touring with the other cruise passengers, your contact and exposure to the local culture are limited.

The second downside is timing. It is difficult to go all the way to Europe (a 6-hour or more time difference) and be away from home for one week. It takes at least one day each way to travel, and jet lag affects the majority of people. Since most travelers going to Europe stay longer, many cruises are 10 days or more. Even those going on 7-day cruises will usually extend their European stays or go early.

The last downside is that although you are seeing many European cities, you do not spend much time in any one port of call. Think about traveling to any major U.S. city such as New York , Washington, or San Francisco . You could not begin to even scratch the surface of things to do and see in just 10 hours. When planning a European cruise, know that you cannot do all the "musts" in one day, and convince yourself to return one day. On the other hand, consider a European cruise a wonderful little box of chocolate candy: plenty of small bites to sample and treasure.

These three downsides are manageable for most travelers, and the joys of European cruising far outweigh the inconveniences listed above.

April to November is the best time of year to cruise Europe, and you will have the widest selection of ships during this time. Note that a few cruise lines operate in the Mediterranean year-round, so if you must travel during the winter, there will be a ship available. June through August is the "high season" for most itineraries, with the prices during the other months being lower. Depending on where you are cruising, spring and fall may be actually preferable since it won't be so hot. Sometimes tourist facilities close during the offseason or have shorter opening hours, but your savings could be substantial. The time of year is somewhat driven by where you want to go on your European cruise. Just remember the best time to go to each destination is usually the most expensive.

Mediterranean - Best temperatures are in the spring and fall. Greece, Turkey, the Rivieras, and southern Italy and Spain get especially hot in the summer, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees away from the ocean.

Scandinavia and the Baltics - Cruises usually run to northern Europe only from late May to early September, with the late summer providing the best weather (70s or higher). Mid-June to early July is particularly interesting because of the midnight sun, which only disappears for 3-4 hours each night. Hurtigruten operates its Norwegian coastal voyages year-round along the western coast of Norway, so you can see the midnight sun in the summer and the Northern lights in the winter.

Great Britain and Ireland - Late summer and early fall are the sunniest months. Temperatures are generally much cooler (only in the low- to mid-60s) here than on the European continent.

Rivers of Europe - River cruise ships operate on the great rivers of Europe from early spring through November and again for the Christmas markets in early December. Summer is the best weather, but the fall colors are spectacular and the temperatures are moderate. "Tulip" cruises operate in the Netherlands from March through mid-May, with April being the best month for tulip-maniacs.

Atlantic Islands, Portugal, and western France - Cruise ships often visit Madeira and the Canary Islands as part of Caribbean/Mediterranean repositioning cruises in the spring and fall. These islands have good weather and moderate temperatures year-round. Ports of call in Portugal and western France are popular in the late spring and early fall when ships are repositioning between the Mediterranean and northern Europe. Temperatures are moderate during these times, and it may be rainy in the spring.

Where to Go

Cruises to Europe are very different from cruises to the Caribbean or Alaska. Like these popular cruise destinations, Europe has beaches and spectacular natural beauty, but it also has history, art, and cultural sites in most ports of call far too numerous to see in just one day. Most cruises to Europe fall into one of these categories:

Eastern Mediterranean Cruises - Greece, the Greek Isles , and Turkey are the highlights of most eastern Mediterranean cruises. Venice , Italy, and Croatia (especially Dubrovnik) are also very popular ports of call on eastern Mediterranean itineraries, and a few cruises include stopovers in Cyprus , Lebanon, Israel, or Egypt. The ancient archaeological sites of this area, combined with the natural sun-kissed beauty of the islands of Greece, make the eastern Mediterranean a wonderful cruise experience.

Western Mediterranean Cruises - The areas of the Mediterranean from the southern tip of Italy to the straits of Gibraltar are included in these itineraries. Sicily and towering Mount Etna are fascinating, as are the remains of Pompeii near Naples and the Amalfi Csmoast. Capri , an island near Naples, is a picture-perfect place to spend the day. Architecture buffs and art lovers will especially enjoy Rome , Florence , and Barcelona . The French and Italian Rivieras, Mallorca , and Monte Carlo feature beautiful beaches and lots of sun. Along the Rivieras, you can also rub elbows with some of Europe's rich and famous and shop in some of the world's best boutiques.

Scandinavia and the Baltics - Most of these cruise itineraries cover the northern capitals of Europe: Copenhagen , Helsinki , Stockholm, St. Petersburg , Oslo, Tallinn, and Riga. These cities are each different, with friendly citizens and interesting architecture and historical sites. The perfect summer weather and long days are relaxing and invigorating. St. Petersburg has so much to see and do that most cruise ships spend 2 or 3 days in port.

Coastal Norway and the Fjords - If your heart is set on seeing the magnificent fjords of Norway, don't get confused and book a northern European cruise that does not go to western Norway. Oslo (on the eastern coast of Norway) is on a fjord, but the countryside is hilly, not mountainous, and the fjords are not as dramatic as on the western coast. A Norwegian fjord cruise will usually include Bergen and perhaps Flam , Trondheim, and the North Cape on its itineraries. The island of Spitsbergen above the Arctic Circle is also a popular summer cruise destination.

European River Cruises - Many wonderful European cities were built on rivers, and these cities are accessible to river cruises. You can cruise all the way across the heart of Europe from Amsterdam on the North Sea to Romania and Bulgaria on the Black Sea via a river ship. River cruises also take passengers from Normandy to Paris or to southern France. Others include Berlin to Prague or Moscow to St. Petersburg. A good rule of thumb is if there is a major city and a river nearby, there is probably a European river cruise.

British Isles - Cruise from London to Wales, Ireland or Scotland and all around the British Isles. The natural beauty of these islands mixes well with the excitement of London (as a pre- or post-cruise extension). For those who love nature, small ships like the Hebridean Princess sail the Scottish Isles, with lots of hiking and exploring included along the way.

The Black Sea - Cruise ships sail from Istanbul or Athens into the Black Sea, with ports of call in Ukraine, Romania, and Bulgaria. These ports mix history and different cultures with ports of the old Soviet Union states.

Islands of the Atlantic Ocean - Several islands make interesting cruise destinations in the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary Islands and Madeira are year-round destinations, and the North Atlantic islands of Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and the Shetland Islands are included on summer cruises. These islands all have great natural beauty and interesting geological features such as volcanic or geothermal activity, mountainous terrain, or quiet beaches.

Repositioning Cruises from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean - The cruise season in the Mediterranean is almost year-round, but ships only sail the Baltic and northern Europe from May through September. Repositioning cruises between the two parts of Europe are interesting and often a good deal . Ports of call between the UK and the Mediterranean often include Normandy, France , with a day trip to Paris, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Lisbon , and some of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean or Gibraltar.

Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try. This is one of our most popular website features.
