"If you're here, it's because you understand the difference between the traveler and the tourist. You appreciate the journey, not the race. You want the unparalleled room with most awe-inspiring views of Germany waiting for you, not the reception trying to find your name. If you're here, you know that locals already know the best places to eat, with the finest delicacies and you know it's not the place across from the hotel. If you're here, it's because you know what you want, and we know exactly how to give it to you. You're in the right place, welcome to Distinctly Deutschland."
"Using Distinctly Deutschland was like having a friend in Germany where the experience is much more indepth. Even if you can organize all the logistics yourself, you cannot replicate the experience where a friend is showing you their private collection of hidden treasures."
"Our trip to Germany is one of our all time favorites, a fantastic art and history party."
"We truly felt like we “experienced” each geographical area. "
"Alex and Vanessa were phenomenal. They were organized, responsive, and caring both before our trip and during. They did a fantastic job planning according to our likes and dislikes, including picking the best restaurants in Germany! I cannot say enough good things about the service provided by the travel agency on our trip. From picking the best accommodations and locations to the daily itinerary, it was truly an unforgettable trip thanks to them. "
"The trip was fantastic. We loved all our guides and the restaurant suggestions were amazing."
Jennifer B.
"Thanks a ton for the great memories. You'll be my go to when we decide to return!"
"The trip truly was terrific. The guides were all first rate and we enjoyed them tremendously. We learned so much from them. It was a once in a lifetime experience for the entire family."
Dan & Judy W.
"We had a wonderful trip and created memories for our entire family of 17. From the very beginning the associates at Distinctly Deutschland were excellent in every way. They took the time to learn about our interests and the background motivations for the trip. In all cases they listened to our requests and developed a trip to be remembered and cherished. Super responsive. Detail oriented. Flexible."
"We (5 adults early-late 40s) did a 15-day trip through Berlin, Bamberg, Rothenburg, Oberammergau, and Munich. We had an amazing adventure mostly because of DD and their fantastic staff! From the first contact to farewell we got all kinds of personal attention and recommendations. They created a wonderful personalised itinerary for us including some great cities we never would have visited on our own. We really can't recommend highly enough. Worth every penny!"
"Stunning! Distinctly Deutschland certainly lived up to every part of the company name. My wife and I covered several states during our seven day excursion on the ground. The accommodations, transportation and overall care was comforting and exceeded our expectations. The DD guides were top notch, and I can’t image this trip without them. Trustworthy, detail oriented, and assuring. "

Your Trip to Munich: The Complete Guide
Munich , located in the South of Germany, is the capital of Bavaria and the gateway to the German Alps. München, the city's native name, is derived from the Old German word Mönche ("monks") and traces back Munich’s origins as a Benedictine monastery during the eighth century. Then, Bavaria was ruled for more than 750 years by the kings of the Wittelsbach Dynasty.
Today, Munich is famous for its interesting mix of traditional Bavarian culture, modern living, and high-tech industries. This city's unique contemporary architecture goes hand in hand with grand avenues, first-class museums, and baroque palaces. Of course, Munich is perhaps most famous for its annual Oktoberfest and its rollicking beer halls.
Get the most out of your trip to Bavaria's heartland with this guide, full of tips on where to stay, how to get around, must-try foods (and beers!), and more.
Planning Your Trip
Best Time to Visit : Munich shines during the spring months, when you'll find great weather and an event calendar packed with festivals and concerts.
Language: German is the main language spoken in Munich, but English is taught in schools and visitors will encounter many English speakers. Many restaurants have English menus available.
Currency : Germany is a member of the European Union and therefore uses the Euro. You can find currency exchanges at many large transit hubs, such as the Munich Airport and the Heimeranplatz station.
Getting Around : Most popular sights and museums are in the city's historic center, which is easily walkable. Should you need to go further afield, Munich's public transportation system, the MVV, is excellent, with modern subways, trams, and buses.
Travel Tip: Oktoberfest is the star of Munich's event calendar, drawing more than six million visitors each year . As the largest beer festival in the world, visiting during Oktoberfest requires a bit of planning—make your travel arrangements well in advance.
Things to Do
For travelers looking for traditional Germany, Munich is it. Whether you're after biergartens or world-class museums, the city has no shortage of things to do . Stroll around Marienplatz , the city's central square, have a beer at Hofbrauhaus, and spend a sunny afternoon in English Garden , Munich's largest park, to experience a few of the best things the city has to offer.
- Müncheners love beer, so no visit to the city is complete without popping into Hirschgarten, the world's largest beer garden , for a pint.
- The Pinakothek der Moderne is the country's largest modern art museum, boasting works from the genre's greats, like Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.
- Dachau , one of the first concentration camps of Nazi Germany, is a short trip outside of the city center. A visit here is both horrifying and moving.
There is also no shortage of free things to do in Munich and the city is extremely kid-friendly , with plenty of activities for the whole family.
What to Eat and Drink
If you're looking for traditional German food, Munich is the city for it . Bavarian fare is everywhere here, from schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) to sauerkraut and potatoes. Weisswurst, or white sausage, is a must-try. Made with minced veal and pork, the sausage is seasoned with parsley and other spices. The aptly-named Bratwurstherzl is a popular spot both for weisswurst and other regional specialties, like sauerbraten with potato dumplings and spaetzle .
Of course, given that Munich is a major city, it's not all meat and potatoes here. The city is home to a plethora of international-inspired eateries too, like Hey Luigi, a casual Italian restaurant.
Hofbräuhaus is Munich's most famous beer hall and the largest in Germany, with seating for 5,000 revelers. A visit is a must, but the city is home to other unique beer halls , like Weisses Bräuhaus, where they brew their own wheat beer, and large beer gardens , where you can sip your brew under the shade of ancient trees.
Where to Stay in Munich
Munich is divided up into 25 different municipalities (called Stadtbezirke ). Altstadt is among the most popular, as this is where many popular attractions, including Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz are located. If luxury shopping is on your itinerary, you'll want to stay close to Old Town’s Maximilianstrasse. Au is another popular neighborhood. This cozy quarter is home to the Paulaner am Nockherberg beer festival each year.
Most hotels are located in the city center and with walking distance of the main train station, although a few great options are a bit further out. Hotel Laimer Hof, a 25-minute train ride from the city center, is among the city's best rated, with 23 quaint rooms. In the heart of the historic center, CORTIINA, a TripSavvy Editors' Choice Award winner in 2018, is located a stone's throw from Old Town Hall and St. Peter’s Church.
See our recommendation for the best hotels in Munich here .
Getting There
Munich’s International Airport, Franz Josef Strauss Flughafen (MUC), is the second busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt serving around 48 million passengers each year. The airport is frequently rated as one of the best in the world. Located 19 miles northeast of Munich, the airport is also very well connected to the city: Take the metro S8 or S2 to reach Munich's city center in approximately 40 minutes.
The city is well connected to trains and other forms of public transportation , so unless you're planning on exploring Bavaria extensively, renting a car is not necessary. The city is also served by Uber and a bike share.
Culture and Customs
While service is included in the bill, generally waiters are tipped ten percent for good service.
Many Germans speak English, but learning a few words of German — how to say hello, thank you, and goodbye, for instance — is a courteous gesture.
If you visit Munich's English Garden, you should know that nudity is allowed in designated areas. The practice isn't as common as it once was, but it is a defining feature of the park.
Money Saving Tips
- Many of Munich's best attractions, like the Glockenspiel and Frauenkirche are free.
- While the Residence, a former Bavarian palace, isn't free, roam the vast gardens and impressive courtyards.
- In lieu of more expensive restaurant meals, shop at Viktualienmarkt for local and fresh produce, snacks, and other artisan goodies.
- Companies like New Europe offer free Munich walking tours . You'll start in Marienplatz and cover many of Munich's most famous attractions, including the Church of St. Peter and Höfbrauhaus.
- Oktoberfest is free! But accommodations can be pricey for this massive celebrations, so book in advance.

Most Popular Things To Do In Munich
Munich City Immersion Tour , includes Traditional Bavarian Lunch
Our cultural hop-on open group, or private, walking tour in the old city (pedestrian zone) is the foundation – sampler plate – of every tour we offer. This is a guest favorite, since it gives a comprehensive insight on what to do in Munich.
Emphasis here is on immersion into Bavarian life, and to get you local in a relaxed, efficient and enjoyable way. Food is culture and only we have standardized an eating element into our walking city tour within our popular local Farmers’ Market.
Even if you only have a layover, or one day in Munich, as our reviews affirm, this ranks as one of the most popular things to do in Munich.
Bavarian Beer and Schnapps Tour
Of any Munich Pub Crawl or Bavarian beer tasting, this ranks as one of the most cost effective and comprehensive beer tours. We give an overall experience for a local Bavarian beer and food evening, now included within a money saving combi-tour.
Whether you are an individual guest, friends & family group, or prefer a private bachelor(-ette) party, join us as we go off the beaten path to visit our favorite pubs, beer halls & beer gardens.
We frequent local favorites that are off the beaten path, so for this reason we care about group sizes. No pun intended when we say, “first come, first served.” Practice your “Prost!”, socialize with locals, all while enjoying this Bavarian beer tasting tour.
Neuschwanstein Castle Tour , Linderhof Castle & Oberammergau
Bavaria is the land of picturesque mountains, lakes and castles. So, this tour remains our most popular day trip for guests visiting Munich for a minimum 2 day stay.
Whether you choose Schloss Neuschwanstein, or a combination of Bavarian sites, there is no better way to experience these than in your personally selected vehicle – car, mini-van or| coach – along with your private ozTour Munich driver, for a fully guided and all-inclusive experience.
This tour also includes shopping opportunities for Christmas ornments, cuckoo clocks and nativity scenes.
In 1933, the Nazis designated the town of Dachau to be the site for the first Nazi concentration camp. The Dachau Concentration Camp was opened to detain the political deviants to the Nazi Party. Later, it became the model camp for other concentration camps established during the Third Reich.

Trip overall was very good. Two meals (Zermatt and Innsbruck) we unedible....too salty and Zermatt hotel failed to clean dishes from tables in morning yet required us to eat there rather than clean tables (for non group guests). St Moritz hotel and staff were excellent and over the top. Schedule did not provide enough time in Innsbruck and Turin. Guide was excellent and caring.

Imperial Highlights (10 Days)
Transportation was good so was th driver . The tour manager , Andy, was also very good . Hotels were ok and food -so la la (I got what I paid for) It was my first time with Trafalgar ...and what I liked most is - I didn't worry about my luggage!
Prague, Vienna & Budapest
It was quite good, the problem is that most of the sightseens where not included, so it seems like a hotel and transport package, not a tour.
Imperial Europe (Summer, 10 Days)
This was our second Trafalgar tour. We had a great experience on both tours. We will definitely be enjoying a third Trafalgar tour in the near future.

Imperial Splendors
Great trip. Guide was excellent. Viewing of a number of historic cathedrals, Prague Castle, boat tours, etc. Only downside is hotels are well stocked with small Ikea furniture. Most hotels we had to push the beds together. Best hotel was Continental in Budapest. I only gave meals 4 stars because I didn't like the goulash in Hungary.

The tour met and exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide Marty was phenomenal.

Our guide Marty was simply the best as was our driver Kris who made traveling throughout Eastern Europe easy! Hotels were spotlessly clean - basic but we were quite comfortable and happy. Amazing group of fellow travelers - we had loads of fun. We would do another tour with Marty and Kris anytime. We saw so many amazing towns, cities, countries and sights - thank goodness we have photos to remind us of it all.

Roma and our driver was the BEST! I left very impressed with his driving! Not only was he a great driver, but he was an amazing person. His wife made us homemade snacks and they were amazing. Roma was such a great guide. She made my first trip with expat explore travel memorable. However, the BEST part of the trip was the people I got to see new countries with. SUCH AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. I will travel with Expat again.
Danube Delights (from Munich to Budapest)
What people love about europe tours from munich.
Tour was fantastic, hotels with name B&B HOTELS were disgusting, hotel wasn't 3 star maybe 1, service was terrible. I didn't shower at these hotels due to shower issues. Once we moved on tour became lovely. Never inform a guest that they cannot cancel an outing if they say they weren't feeling well. Money wasn't the issue, it was the fact tour guide pushed the situation until I lost patience with her. As far as tipping goes, I have always understood tipping is and always will be on performance. Not to be forced into what you think I should tip. Do your job and get paid by your Company, tips are extra for a job well done not just half assed. Suggestions are fine .
CostSaver Imperial Highlights 10 days. I would highly recommend this trip. We traveled in July 2023. This is the less expensive sister company to Trafalgar. We traveled to Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, and Salzburg, and a few other smaller cities. The trip was about $1600, not including airfare and additional optional experiences. We had an excellent tour director, Judith Lee. There were 33 people on the tour from all over the world including Australia, South Africa, Canada, United States, Malaysia and other countries. We had the option of 12 additional optional experiences. If you did all of them, it would cost you an additional 841 Euros. We did 9 of the 12 optional tours. I would not recommend any of the optional dinners (except one- see below), as the food choices were limited and I felt like the venues were tourist traps. I also did not like the day trip to Szentendre (63 Euros) just outside Budapest. It was just a tiny city with nothing but outdoor shopping and a few eateries. Nowhere to escape the heat. It included a light lunch, which was hot goulash (like a broth soup) and strudel, no air conditioning. I felt like this was a tourist trap. I really did not like the optional dinner just outside Vienna at Marchfelderhof restaurant for 72 Euros. Every square inch of the restaurant was filled with useless tchotchkes, which we did not find amusing, and it was a 45 minute drive outside the city. it was only filled with group tours when we went. We had a choice of three food options for dinner. We did like some of the food, but not everyone might like the limited options. They played American music and sometimes they have a fortune teller come around to the tables as well. I would have rather stayed in the city and spent that money on a nice restaurant in the city. We really liked the optional night tour in Prague, the lunch cruise in Prague, the Sound of Music tour, the tour to Eagle’s Nest, and our favorite was the dinner cruise in Budapest. However, because this is a fast paced tour, doing the optional tours did take away from other things you could do on your own in the city. If you have time to do research before your trip, you may find other things you’d prefer to see, but we didn’t do that. The trip included tours of each major city with local guides who were all excellent. The trip had 3 included dinners- 2 of which were terrible, so you may want to skip it and spend time in the city. The hotels were all outside the city center, but we were able to take public transport into the cities. We felt safe everywhere we traveled, but never stayed out past about 9:30pm. The hotels were small European hotel chains. Rooms are typical European- small, but clean, and all included free wifi. They all seemed to have good soundproofing as well. All had hair dryers, but only one had a refrigerator and coffee machine. No other amenities in the rooms. Europe has a new restriction on air conditioning, so we did not always get a good night’s sleep due to hot, stuffy rooms. Plus they only had thick comforters on the bed, not even a top sheet. I don’t think the AC was on in any hotel, so you may want to ask for a room change to the north side of the building if possible- might be cooler. If it was hotter out, maybe they would have turned on the AC. I read online that some American brand hotels might be more likely to have AC, but I cannot verify that. Trafalgar does the same trip, but it’s a few hundred more, but they stay in Hyatt and Holiday Inn etc, so there might be better AC in those hotels- so check it out if AC is a priority. Breakfast was included at each hotel and there was usually a pretty good selection of food. We purchased a European sim card and unlimited data online through Holafly before we left home and activated it once we got to Munich. It cost $35 for 10 days and it worked perfectly everywhere we traveled. We used WhatsApp to communicate with loved ones at home, as you can text and call using only data. Also, our tour director used WhatsApp to send us tour details and the seating assignments on the bus. Everyone in our tour group was very nice. We had travelers from 10 years old to people in their 70s. There were five single travelers as well from 18 years old to someone in her 60s. Most people dressed very casually and wore sneakers most of the time, as you’ll be doing a great deal of walking. Bring layers and an umbrella, and a light rain jacket. We had days from 55 degrees fahrenheit to 85 degrees, and several days of rain. It was difficult to find money exchange places, but most places accepted credit cards. I've read it's best to use an ATM machine vs money exchange, as the money exchange will charge you a fee. Some smaller stores only accepted cash- most only in Euros, but some touristy areas also accepted US and Australian dollars. Uber was available in most cities. We used Google Maps for getting around and it was accurate when looking up directions for public transportation as well. We will definitely book another trip with either CostSaver or Trafalgar- might spend the extra money if we know Trafalgar goes to hotels that definitely have AC.
The guides were wonderful and had a lot of information to share. The driver was superb, very careful and considerate. Osman was very good with his history of places, historical events etc. He lay down the time and place for our meetings. Very relaxed and understanding.
