FedEx Cup Playoffs: Tour Championship starting positions for all 30 golfers

The Tour Championship, the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, begins this week in Atlanta. Here are the starting positions for all 30 players.

The PGA Tour season, at long last, is coming to a close. All that’s left is the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale in the Tour Championship, where (wait for it) $75 million will be up for grabs.

So, how does it all work? We’re glad you asked. We could all use a refresher.

The Tour Championship uses a stroke-based bonus system based on the current FedEx Cup standings , meaning not everyone enters the tournament on the same playing field.

This has been the formula for the past four years, as the Tour changed the format beginning in 2019. The old format crowned a Tour Championship winner and a FedEx Cup Playoffs champion (although sometimes it was the same person), and keeping track of essentially two different tournaments — for players and fans — was, well, confusing.

So now there’s just one champion, who, along with winning the Tour Championship, will also be the FedEx Cup Playoffs champ.

The leader of the FedEx Cup points race starts the Tour Championship, held at East Lake in Atlanta, at 10 under. The top five in the standings is staggered (2nd at eight under, 3rd at seven under, 4th at six under and 5th at five under), and the last 25 players in the field are more bunched (i.e. places 6-10 start at four under, and so on).

Max Homa’s heckler incident illustrated risky future for PGA Tour, gambling

But just because Scheffler has a two-stroke lead over second place — and a much larger lead over others — doesn’t mean he’s bound to run away with this.

Take last year, for example, when Scheffler held the same spot on the leaderboard but was eventually beaten by Rory McIlroy, who started the tournament six shots back and even rebounded from a triple bogey on his first hole of the week to win the whole thing.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-3 p.m. on Golf Channel and 3-7 p.m. on CBS, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on CBS.

All four of golf’s majors are in the books, but the top PGA Tour players still have plenty on the line in August.

The FedExCup Playoffs have arrived. The three-tournament competition offers the PGA’s largest prize pool and will crown a champion for the season.

Before the opening tournament tees off, here is everything to know about the 2023 FedExCup Playoffs. 

How do the FedExCup Playoffs work?

Players accumulate FedExCup points throughout the regular season. Following the final regular season event, the top 70 players are eligible to compete in the FedExCup Playoffs. Regular season points carry over into the first two FedExCup Playoff events. 

The FedExCup Playoffs feature a progressive cut. The first event has a field of 70, the second has a field of 50 and the final one has 30.

The 30 golfers that reach the final event – the Tour Championship – compete with starting strokes based on seeding. The player with the most FedExCup points starts the Tour Championship with a 10-under score and the other golfers get progressively fewer starting strokes.

From there, whichever player has the lowest score when combining four rounds at the Tour Championship with their starting strokes is crowned the FedExCup champion.

What is the FedExCup Playoffs prize pool?

The Tour Championship features the biggest prize pool on the PGA Tour.

The winner gets $18 million of the $75 million bonus pool. The second-place finisher gets $6.5 and everyone in the top 10 gets a payday of at least $1 million.

When do the FedExCup Playoffs start?

The 2023 playoffs start with the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which runs from Aug. 10-13.

Where is the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship?

The FedEx St. Jude Championship will be held at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.

How to watch the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship

FedExCup Playoffs schedule 2023

After the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the playoffs will continue with the BMW Championship. The tournament will take place at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., from Aug. 17-20.

The playoffs will conclude at the Tour Championship, which will be held from Aug. 24-27 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

What are the FedExCup standings in 2023?

Two golfers are well ahead of the pack in the standings entering the playoffs, and they are each seeking their first FedExCup. Jon Rahm is in first place with 3,320 points, giving him a little cushion over Scottie Scheffler and his 3,146 points.

Rory McIlroy , a three-time FedExCup champion and the reigning winner, is in third place with 2,304 points.

The regular season is over. It’s time for the playoffs.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs consist of three events, capped off by the Tour Championship, where someone will walk off with a $15 million prize.

This year marks the 15th season of the playoffs. PGA Tour players battled through 50 events during the 2020-21 “super season” with only the top 125 in FedEx Cup points making the postseason.

Collin Morikawa – with his two wins, eight top-10s and 2,171 total FedEx Cup points – finished the season in the No. 1 spot. Morikawa also leads the PGA Tour’s money list with $7,039,768.

Jordan Spieth is No. 2 in FedEx points, followed by Patrick Cantlay, Harris English and Jon Rahm, who is No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking .

First up: the Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club on August 19-22 in Jersey City, New Jersey. The top 125 in the field will duke it out for a spot in the top 70, and those golfers will move on to the BMW Championship on August 26-29 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. From there only the top 30 advance to the season-ending Tour Championship on Sept. 2-5 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. There is no cut at the BMW or the Tour Championship.

The winner of the Tour Championship is declared the FedEx Cup champion and takes home a first-place prize of $15 million in bonus money.

There is a total of $60 million in bonus money up for grabs at East Lake.

The PGA Tour will continue to utilize the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, which was introduced for the first time in 2019. It’s a staggered system whereby the golfer in the top position will start the Tour Championship at 10 under, the No. 2 golfer will start at 8 under and on from there. This system was established to give players at the top of the points list the reward of a starting advantage in the Tour Championship.

Dustin Johnson won the FedEx Cup  a year ago. Only two golfers have won multiple FedEx Cup titles: Tiger Woods in 2007 and 2009, and Rory McIlroy in 2016 and 2019.

Miles Russell has made a cut in a pro golf event. What are his options for the future?

The biggest news in golf this week is what 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach native Miles Russell is doing at the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Open at Lakewood National near Bradenton. 

Russell became the youngest player to ever make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event (and the second-youngest to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event) when he shot 68-66—134 at the Commander Course to enter the weekend in a tie for 26 th . Russell made two eagles on the front nine of his second round and finished 8-under, six shots behind leader Brandon Crick. 

His performance raises a number of questions. Here are some answers, courtesy of the PGA Tour: 

Can Miles Russell turn professional? 

There is no age restriction on someone declaring himself a professional golfer. Once he accepts prize money, that makes it official. However, Russell can’t accept the money for his finish this week at the Korn Ferry event because he entered the tournament as an amateur.

Can Miles Russell become a PGA Tour member? 

Not until he's 18 years old. Those under that age can play in PGA Tour events and if they're professionals, they can accept the prize money. But he cannot participate in the FedEx Cup points race until then. 

What are his options for playing PGA Tour events under the age of 18? 

Russell can use Monday qualifiers and sponsor invitations, and if he wins a tournament, will have a two-year exemption. But according to the Tour, he will be capped at 12 starts per year until he's 18. 

Can Miles Russell play in the major championships? 

He can play in three of them by qualifying under various amateur standards. For example, being a finalist in the U.S. Amateur earns a spot in the Masters and U.S. Open, but if Russell remains an amateur. Winning the U.S. Amateur gets a ticket to the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open, but again, he will have to stay an amateur. 

Russell can also qualify for the U.S. Open through local and sectional qualifiers, with no age limit. There is a similar regional qualifying system for the British Open. 

Russell will have to be a professional to play in the PGA Championship. 

Winning any of the majors also earns a five-year exemption in the other three majors. 

Can Miles Russell play in The Players Championship? 

Yes, if he wins a PGA Tour event, a major or is among the top 50 on the World Rankings. He would be a non-member until he's 18 and can't use the FedEx Cup points. If he wants to stay an amateur, he can't collect the money.

2024 FedEx Cup points list standings

The race for the 2024 FedEx Cup title rolls in the wake of the year's first major. The season-long FedEx Cup points standings will help determine who keeps their PGA Tour cards and who’ll be eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs come August.

The 2024 season includes 35 regular-season events before the start of the three-event playoff series that ends at the Tour Championship Aug. 29-Sept. 1. For standard regular-season PGA Tour events, 500 FedEx Cups are awarded to the winner, with points also being earned by every player making the cut. For the tour’s eight signature events, 700 points goes to the winner, while 750 points are given to the champion of the four majors and the Players. Lastly, 300 points are given to the winner of any event played in the same week as a major or signature event.

Here is latest edition of FedEx Cup points list after Scottie Scheffler's win at the Masters. All players inside the top 70 at the end of the season earn their PGA Tour cards for the 2024 season and get into the playoffs. All players in the top 50 after the first playoff event (FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis) are expected to qualify for PGA Tour signature events in 2025. All players in the top 30 after the second playoff event (BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado) qualify for the Tour Championship and the chance to win the first-place FedEx Cup prize of $25 million from the overall bonus pool of $100 million.

Brian Harman Was in No Mood to Answer Questions After Late-Round Struggles

Harman dropped three shots down the stretch Thursday to finish up with a one-under 70.

Brian Harman was cruising to a nice opening round at the RBC Heritage on Thursday afternoon but his good vibes were ruined by a bogey on No. 17 and a double-bogey on No. 18, which brought him from 4-under to just 1-under. With conditions facilitating excellent scoring, the late stumble put him behind the eight ball as he fights for positioning headed into the weekend at the event, which doesn't have a cut.

Harman, the reigning Open champion, fulfilled his post-round media obligations by fielding four questions over 45 seconds, saying 43 words in response, and getting the heck out of there as quickly as possible.

Credit where it's due. If someone asks you if you can walk them through the hole that ruined everything you can simply say no and walk away. That's something weekend duffers can use when they return home and are in a foul mood.

The unorthodox interview did little to spark Harman who is one-over in his second round at the moment and nine shots off the lead.

2024 NBA playoffs bracket, scores, results: Nuggets pull away from Lakers, Knicks take Game 1 vs. 76ers

The nba playoff bracket is set with 16 teams in the running for the larry o'brien trophy.

The 16-team bracket is set in the 2024 NBA playoffs, and the first round tipped off Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Knicks and Nuggets -- all the higher seeds in their respective matchups -- were winners on Saturday, protecting home court. The Nuggets, who swept the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals a season ago, notched another win against L.A. to close out the night.

Earlier in the day, the Knicks used a big fourth quarter to rally past the 76ers, who got 29 points from Joel Embiid around an injury scare in the second quarter . Elsewhere, Anthony Edwards made his presence felt, scoring 33 points in a Timberwolves' blowout win over the Suns, and the Cavaliers stifled the Magic.

The other four series tip off on Sunday, and the first round could run through May 5. Here's how CBS Sports experts are picking their brackets .

The PGA TOUR heads to the Dominican Republic for the Corales Puntacana Championship, the next Additional Event on the 2024 TOUR schedule.

The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields based on the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories.

Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with "reshuffle" notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.

Note: An additional year of eligibility was granted to some categories because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
