Review: CINDERELLA, Gillian Lynne Theatre

Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-awaited fairytale is a flamboyant, joyous and smart show

pixeltracker

It's set in Belleville, a seemingly perfect place where gender is proscribed; the overtly masculine court Knights are more like Chippendales and women get a nose job before going to a ball. Cinderella is the rebellious outlier, refusing to conform and preferring to take the mickey out of her friend Prince Sebastian.

But when Sebastian unexpectedly becomes heir to the throne and needs a wife, will Cinderella conform to beauty stereotypes to get her 'happy-ever-after'?

Carrie Hope Fletcher has a captivating stage presence as Cinderella , belting out songs such as the intensely catchy "Bad Cinderella " with her powerful voice, but also capturing the sardonic, sarcastic and rebellious side to the character. She has a smart answer for everything, but also shows great nuance as she reveals vulnerability and fear.

Ivano Turco makes his West End debut as an understated Prince Sebastian. His standout ballad of "Only You, Lonely You" is brimming with emotion. There is a quiet and gentle chemistry with Hope Fletcher, reflecting the deep friendship between the characters, rather than a great passion.

Victoria Hamilton -Barritt is the comedic cornerstone of the show as The Stepmother. Her ridiculously hilarious vocal intonations are reminiscent of a husky Joanna Lumley , combined with a strangulated Margaret Thatcher. There are some lovely scenes with Rebecca Trehearn 's Marie-Antoinette-like Queen, one of which features the sharply satirical duet "I Know You", a masterclass in passive aggression.

Gloria Onitiri is wonderful as a darkly comic, Botox-wielding Godmother; more like Grace Jones than a cuddly fairy. Her character does feel slightly underused though - it would have been great to see a bit more of her.

Georgina Castle and Laura Baldwin 's preening stepsisters are straight out of Love Island , via Made In Chelsea, and Caleb Roberts makes an unexpected and flamboyant impression as Prince Charming.

Writer Emerald Fennell exposes the pressures on women to change their appearance to attract a man and turns the traditional idea of a girl being rescued by a prince on its head. As with her Academy Award-winning rape-revenge satire Promising Young Woman , Fennel subverts the traditional story of female conformity, but the feminist themes are presented with humour and lightness of touch, rather than being rammed down our throats.

Lloyd Webber's diverse score incorporates wistful waltzes, rock ballads and formal orchestral pieces at the royal court. There are fewer earworms than might be expected, but songs such as emotional ballad "Far Too Late" and the rousing dedication to all things masculine "Man's Man" secure the attention and enjoyment of the audience.

The show's costs of £6 million are clear to see; the production looks incredible. Gabriela Tylesova 's costume design is utterly sumptuous, featuring looks as diverse as modern-day Royal Ascot, Games of Thrones and the court of Louis XIV. The hats and headpieces, in particular, are simply knockout. Tylesova's set design is also detailed and immersive, lit beautifully by Bruno Poet .

Sean Kenny 's impressive redesign of the venue has enabled both a conventional theatre configuration and the ability to convert into the round during the performance, and Laurence Connor's energetic direction takes full advantage of the diversity this stage offers.

You won't remember every song and the length could be cut a little, but this wildly over-the-top show is full of joyous exuberance and playful wit. It was worth the wait.

Cinderella is booking until February 2022

FINAL CURTAIN CALL This show is no longer running.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella , is a new romantic musical comedy featuring an original story and book by 2021 OSCAR winner Emerald Fennell ( Promising Young Woman ) and lyrics by Tony & Olivier award winner David Zippel ( City of Angels ). Laurence Connor ( Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , School of Rock ) directs with choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter .

Welcome to Belleville! The most aggressively picturesque town in the history of the world, populated exclusively with gorgeous townsfolk who stop at nothing to achieve perfection. Belleville is fairy tale come to life: a place where you can’t move without falling over a wishing well or a quivering milkmaid. Maintaining this façade is a full time job, and one that is taken very seriously indeed.

The only person steadfastly refusing to live in the fairy tale is Cinderella, loud-mouthed, dripping with disdain, and more likely to roast Hansel and Gretel for dinner than play the demure and downtrodden maid, Cinderella is desperate to escape. But underneath it all, the loneliness that comes with being the town pariah is wearing on her.

It doesn’t help that her only friend, Prince Sebastian, has suddenly become the heir to the throne after the mysterious disappearance of his elder brother: sex god and charisma machine, Prince Charming. Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, the formerly shy and somewhat-less-sex-goddish Sebastian seems to be quickly growing into his brother’s enormous britches, and out of his friendship with Cinderella. But this change of circumstances also introduces something else to the relationship, a new spark which neither of them quite know what to do with. Could it be that these two old friends mean more to one another than they are willing to let on?

After a devastating PR disaster for Belleville, and with the threat of the guillotine glinting on the horizon, the Queen decides that the only thing to save the town (and her pretty neck) is a Royal Wedding: something colourful and distracting so the peasants don’t get too revolution-y.

All looks lost for the blossoming romance, until Cinderella meets The Godmother, who can fix any problem with a little incision and a couple of broken ribs. Maybe the answer lies where Cinderella has been refusing to look: in becoming the identikit beauty that everyone has always told her to be.

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance.

< back to children's theatre shows.

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, this enthralling fairy tale still warms the hearts of children and adults alike.

In this specially created Youth Edition, all the beloved songs and familiar characters are present and accounted for. However, the entire script has been condensed to better suit young attention spans, and the plot has been slightly altered to highlight some important lessons for contemporary audiences.

LISTENING TEST 02 Part 03

Part 3 questions 14-19.

Test 2 Part 3 1. back gate / gate 2. The Party / the party 3. school secretary / secretary 4. 15.75 5. ice cream / an ice cream 6. bus station / bus stop

Now turn to Part 3, questions 14-19. You will hear a man telling a group of students about a trip to the theatre. For each question, fill in the missing information in the numbered space. You now have 20 seconds to look at Part 3. [pause] Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice. Man: Okay everyone, now I need to say a few things about our visit to Staunton Theatre next Tuesday. You need to be here at school at six o'clock. We'll meet by the back gate because the coach can't stop at the front one. We can't leave any later than six, as the play starts at 7.30. We're seeing a very interesting play called The Party by Andrew McVitie. It's a comedy about a birthday celebration. His works can be difficult to understand so you need to read the play in advance. There is a copy for everybody which you can pick up from the school secretary. Do that as soon as you can. I'll hand out the theatre tickets on the coach. We're all sitting together, in rows E and F. The full price of these tickets is £18, but you're lucky, because I managed to get a discount for the group, so you only have to pay £15.75 each. Could you let me have this money before Tuesday, please, and £3.50 for the coach. Now, a lot of you have suggested going somewhere together afterwards. Well, the coach driver is willing to come back a bit later, but there isn't time for a three course meal, so we'll go to a cafe I know nearby for an ice cream and a coffee. Don't forget to bring some money for that. I've arranged for the coach to make an extra stop before it comes back to the school. So for those of you who need to take the bus home, it will be possible for you to get off at the bus station. If you decide to take a taxi, you should find plenty of taxis there, or you can walk to the main square. Right, any questions...

Gioachino rossini.

Rossini’s enchanting fairytale heroine returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago stage in classic style. Cinderella (La Cenerentola) tells the story of the downtrodden daughter of a selfish father, Don Magnifico. When Prince Ramiro (disguised as his own valet, Dandini) meets her, they fall instantly in love, leading — after a few complications — to a heartwarming happy ending. Rossini’s score provides endless sparkle, with Cenerentola’s and Ramiro’s arias abounding in fabulous vocal virtuosity. There’s also hilarity, thanks to the antics of Magnifico and Dandini. Two rising stars, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Jack Swanson, will be joined by the incomparable Alessandro Corbelli to lead Lyric’s cast in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s world-famous production led by the exciting Taiwanese conductor Yi-Chen Lin.

  • Language: Sung in Italian with projected English titles
  • Running Time: 3 hours and 10 minutes, including 1 intermission
  • Location: Lyric Opera House

In this joyful Act Two aria, the kind-hearted Angelina (mezzo-soprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya in her U.S. operatic debut) chooses love and forgiveness over sadness and revenge.
