Day 1 Seoul

Arrive at any time.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 seoul.

Sit back and relax on a private bus and enjoy a tour of the bustling metropolis where modern skyscrapers, high-tech subways and pop culture meet Buddhist temples and street markets. Visit Gyengbokgung Palace, the National Folklore Museum, Bukchon Hanok Village and Insadong alley.

Meals included:

Day 3 seoul/gyeongju-si.

After breakfast, board a high speed bullet train for a relaxing morning ride through the countryside to Gyeongiu. Once the group arrives to this old capital city for 1,000 years, they will experience an overnight stay in a local temple. During the stay the group will learn about temple etiquette, watch a monk martial arts performance, experience the daily prayer ritual and a temple style dinner.

Day 4 Gyeongju-si

Enjoy a peaceful morning meditation, martial arts practice, and drum and bell ritual before exploring in Gyeongiu. On the city tour visit to the UNESCO site of Bulguksa Temple located on the slopes of Mount Toham and admire the national treasures there, such as Dabotap and Seokgatap stone pagodas, Cheongun-gyo, and two gilt-bronze statues of Buddha. Afterwards, experience the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and the surrounding Royal Tombs.

Day 5 Gyeongju-si/Busan

Travel by bus to Busan. Along the way enjoy a day trip to Yangdong Folk Village, a 500-year-old UNESCO site located in Gyeongju National Park, to get a feel for life during the early Joseon Dynasty. Afterwards, continue on to the picturesque 14th century seaside temple hidden in the rocks - Haedong Yonggungsa. After exploring the temple, check in to your hotel and get your bearings with an orientation walk on Haeundae Beach and Dongbaek Island (APEC House). Spend the evening getting to know colourful Busan, opt to treat yourself at a Jjimjilbang spa or sing your heart out at a popular karaoke bar.

Day 6 Busan/Seoul

In the seaside city, Busan, visit the bustling Jagalchi fish market, Gukjesijang market, Yongdusan Park, and the colourful Gamcheon Culture Village before traveling back to Seoul. After arriving in Seoul by train, check out Korea's oldest traditional market - Namdaemun Market. Then make your way by cable car to N Seoul Tower to see this beautiful landmark and opt to make the trip up to the observation deck. Spend the rest of your day in Seoul opting to see Banpo Bridge, the floating islands, or hanging out in the Gangnam district.

Day 7 Seoul

Visit the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), founded in 1953, separating North and South Korea. With over a million soldiers on watch each day, it is one of the last remnants of the Cold War. With a buffer zone 4km wide and spanning 250 km long there has been very little development in the area, therefore nature and wildlife have pretty much taken over. Spend about 3-4 hours visiting the Demilitarized Zone, then head to The War Memorial of Korea. Later, return back to Seoul for another night in the city.

The 6 Best South Korea Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

South Korea with its bustling cities has its capital in Seoul,  which is a modern metropolis with a rich history and culture that draws visitors from all over the world. This magical country, located in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula bordered by two of the biggest players on the world stage; China to the west and Japan to the east will leave you in awe as you explore from its ancient palaces and temples to its cutting-edge technology and world-class shopping malls.

This article gives you the 6 best tours to discover South Korea with ease.

As adventure leads your way through the hidden pearls of South Korea, you will be struck by the diverse landscapes of the country spanning from the stunning beaches of Jeju Island in the south to the majestic mountains of the Seoraksan National Park in the northern part. Hiking enthusiasts will love it here as they will find plenty of challenging trails to conquer at every turn and curve.

The separation of North and South Korea is one of the most fascinating tales from the Korean Peninsula’s history. These two nations have a lengthy and turbulent past that dates back to pre-World War II. After World War II, when Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial authority, it was divided into North Korea, which was controlled by the Soviet Union, and South Korea, which was controlled by the United States.

There is so much history to learn during your trip, and you will be fortunate to see the scars of the tragic Korean war, which began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, resulting in a three-year war that killed and displaced millions; the effect of which can still be felt today between the two countries.

Despite the difficulties of their shared past, the people of both Koreas share a common culture and language, and there is hope for ultimate reunion because the strength of what they share cannot be separated or one-sided. The road is still long and dusty though.

You will concur with us that only traveling with a group can help uncover all the secret jewels and the little but powerful add-ons like trying your hand at traditional crafts such as pottery and paper making or even dressing up in traditional Korean attire for a photograph.

Imagine this lovely scenario with your fellow travelers in an enchanting photograph. This is the flavor that group travel adds to your experience, and we’re sorry, but only group trips have it.

Having such experiences and saving some money will not only help you to be financially stronger during your trip, but it will also provide you with the best peace of mind a traveler needs during preparations; because it’s simple, industry experts are planning and leading your anticipated adventure, and the last thing they want is to make you unhappy.

When you travel in a group, you are truly covered, and you will have more opportunities to soak up your travels rather than finding out which route leads to the finest shopping mall.

And, when it comes to staying safe in an unfamiliar setting, you have nothing to worry about because, as long as you are on a group trip, you will be under the care of the tour company.

This is an enormous relief for first-time visitors and an added advantage for seasoned visitors because the invaluable information on how to stay safe will be best shared by experienced tour leaders who have interacted with the communities you are visiting. So, give group travel a shot and you won’t regret it. Choose your best tour fit from the following 6 best tours to discover South Korea with ease.

Korean Money Exchange Options

Once you arrive in Korea, there are several options for exchanging money. First, you can exchange money at a money changer in tourist areas such as Myeongdong. These money changers used to have the best rates in Seoul.

However, a better option these days is to use the currency exchange machines from WOW Exchange. These machines are located all over Seoul’s most popular tourist spots, stations, and hotels. They allow you to exchange foreign cash directly to Korean won, with better rates than at the airport. You can also use these machines to claim a tax refund for your shopping before heading to the airport. Both options require a passport.

Should I Change Money At The Airport?

Exchanging money at the airport is easy and convenient as you can instantly get cash to use for shopping, transportation, and general use. However, the exchange rate at the airport is usually much worse than you’ll find in other places in Korea, as mentioned previously. If you need cash as soon as you land, withdraw a small amount ($50) and then exchange the rest in Seoul.

Wise Travel Money Card

Travel Money Cards For Korea

While cash is useful and familiar when traveling, a much better option is to use a travel money card (also known as a currency card). Travel money cards, such as the Wise Travel Money Card, allow you to pay for travel expenses without the need to carry cash or convert money.

A travel money card offers the convenience of using a credit card without high fees that a regular bank could charge. It also allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM without a fee (up to a limit), so you can avoid carrying any cash on the flight or using a money exchange. The exchange rate is the mid-market rate, meaning it’s better than you’ll find even at the money exchanges listed before.

Can I Use My Bank Card In Korea?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Korea. Visa and Mastercard users shouldn’t face a problem, but other cards aren’t as widely accepted. Debit cards and cash withdrawals might not work depending on the bank. Your bank may charge a fee when using it overseas, or give a bad exchange rate. Check with your bank before traveling.

The best option for travel money in Korea is to have a mixture of cash and cards, with a backup credit card just in case. Taking some USD with you is always a good option as you can find plenty of places to exchange it to Korean won and probably at a better rate than you’ll get in the US. If you want to withdraw money in Korea, look for the global ATMs in tourist areas.

Taking a  travel money card  will be safer, cheaper, and more convenient than relying on your own bank or credit card, too. These cards offer competitive rates and are widely accepted around the world so you can use them to visit other countries, too. If you use a travel money card and it gets lost or stolen, you can freeze the card instantly with the app and not have to worry about losing the balance on the card.

When you visit Korea, you’ll notice that most people pay for goods with a card or payment app, even for small purchases like a bottle of water. Unfortunately, the payment apps that are common in the US, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, aren’t available in Korea. Korean apps, such as Kakao Pay, require a Korean bank account, and therefore aren’t an option for travelers.

You can get the  T-Money Card in Korea from subway stations and at certain transport centers, including Seoul Station and Incheon Airport. The card costs 2,500 KRW. Korea Travel Guide to Seasons

Korean Seasons Guide

The best time to visit South Korea is during the warm spring or fall seasons. The weather is mild and clear, there’s a range of festivals and seasonal activities to enjoy, and you can travel to Korea comfortably.

The best months to visit are April, May, September, and October. These months are all during the Korean school semester, so there won’t be as many local travelers around during the weekdays. However, expect the weekends to be busy as people leave the cities to travel within Korea.

Large public holidays, including  Chuseok (mid-autumn festival) in September / October) and Buddha’s Birthday (May), provides travelers with the opportunity to experience Korean culture and celebrations. These holidays change each year based on the lunar calendar.

Korean Weather & Climate

South Korea is a country that experiences four very distinct seasons, with temperatures ranging from 100 Fahrenheit in the summer to below 0 Fahrenheit in the winter. Each of South Korea’s seasons brings opportunities to see unique natural views and enjoy the different climates in Korea.

Spring has some of the gentlest weather, with light rain and a quick jump in temperature to the 60s and 70s by late March. Summer begins with the rainy season in late June and becomes extremely humid and hot throughout July and August before cooling again in September.

Fall has the best weather in Korea, with many warm, sunny days. Cold winter weather appears very quickly in mid-November and the first snow usually appears by late November. Winter is dry and sunny with the lowest chance of rainfall but is also very cold. Snow isn’t constant, but can fall for several weeks on and off during winter.

South Korea Travel Guide To Spring

Visiting in spring offers the chance to see beautiful cherry blossoms stretch across the country, as well as many other spring flowers that brighten up Korea after a cold winter.

Spring starts in late March with the awakening of the cherry blossoms and ends in early June with the start of the rainy season. South Korea is a country with a close connection to nature, which can be witnessed in the many spring festivals and celebrations that happen throughout the year.

Some of the best spring festivals include the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, Damyang Bamboo Forest Festival, Yeon Deung Hoe Lotus Lantern Festival, Jindo Sea Parting Festival, and Boseong Green Tea Plantation Festival.

South Korea Travel Guide To Summer

The weather in summer is perfect for getting outside and relaxing on one of Korea’s many beaches. Some of the best activities include spending a weekend camping or glamping by the beach, hiking in shaded valleys in the national parks, and water sports such as surfing, kayaking, and scuba diving.

Unfortunately, the heat may put off some travelers, and high humidity makes it uncomfortable to move around too much. Fortunately, Korea is a modern country with lots of air-conditioning and ways to deal with the hot weather, including delicious summer dishes.

Cool down with a bowl of Korean bingsu (shaved ice dessert) or a cool latte in one of the many cozy Korean cafes in popular beach destinations.

South Korea Travel Guide To Fall

Travelers to Korea in the fall are treated to spectacular fall foliage creeping far and wide. You can see it falling on palace grounds, sprawled on mountains in national parks, and along city streets.

The start of the fall foliage season in Korea coincides with the end of the hot and humid summer, with clear skies and cool weather, making it the perfect time to travel in Korea. Like spring, the fall season in Korea is one of the festivals and celebrations.

The Chuseok holidays in late September / early October are the biggest public holidays of the year, with cultural events held in popular tourist destinations. There’s also a range of cultural festivals, such as the Andong Mask Festival, Baekje Culture Festival, Jinju Namdang Yudeung Lantern Festival, Jeonju Bibimbap Festival, and the Seoul Kimchi Festival.

South Korea Travel Guide To Winter

Winter, like summer, has more extreme weather than spring and fall, with temperatures often in the 20s and 30s and below. This season, however, is also one of the best for travelers who want to see clear, blue skies and experience good weather.

Winter is the driest season and it very rarely rains. If you don’t mind the cold weather, it’s perfect for traveling around South Korea. One of the biggest draws during winter is the chance to see snowy Korean landscapes, from snow-bedecked royal palaces to frosty peaks atop Korea’s many mountains.

Winter sports are popular in Korea, with ski and snowboard resorts aplenty. Winter also offers the chance for family fun with winter attractions including sledding, winter illuminations, and Christmas parades.

From Seoul to Gyeongju, Busan and Jeju Island, tour participants will experience Korea together as they visit national and historic sites to learn about Korea’s rich cultural heritage.

In the early 1970s, Holt pioneered the concept of heritage tours for international adoptees. Adoptees had begun contacting Holt with questions regarding their birth heritage and history. Holt began our work in Korea in 1955, and we have been serving children throughout Korea ever since. With this history and knowledge, Holt is uniquely qualified to offer a special experience for you and your family.

Tour participants also have the opportunity to visit Holt sponsor- and donor-supported programs like the Ilsan Center , a long-term care facility for children and adults with disabilities or needs, and Morning Garden , a shelter for single mothers and their children.

Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighbouring countries in Asia with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasises respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernised culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a similar capital economic standing to countries such as the United States, Japan and various countries in Western Europe.

You can’t go to South Korea for shopping and not stop in Seoul – the country’s premier destination for all things fashion, electronics, street food and skincare. In this shopper’s paradise of a city, you’ll find traditional Korean items perfect for souvenirs to tech gadgets not yet available on Australia’s shores.

Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

  • Myeongdong (shopping district)
  • Dongdaemun Market (shopping centre)
  • Cheongdam-dong (luxury boutique area)
  • Pyeonghwa (wholesale market)

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

1. bibimbap.

As one of Korea's standout dishes, bibimbap is a tasty concoction of meat, vegetables, egg and rice. Soy sauce, chilli paste, garlic and sesame oil all add flavour to this amazingly colourful dish found everywhere in Korea.

Kimchi is hailed as a nutritional powerhouse - packing a healthy punch of nutrients, vitamins and beneficial bacteria that makes it one of the world's healthiest superfoods. But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavour and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savoury pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favourite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef and beyond.

This was an excellent tour! The food was incredible, the hotels a step above anything I'd experienced, and Mark did a great job of teaching us about Korean culture and language as we drove from place to place. We got to see so much of South Korea in just a week! It was a well-planned and varied itinerary filled with fun and educational activities. Also, it's not easy to eat vegetarian in Korea but Mark worked hard to make sure there was always an abundance of tasty foods for us to enjoy.

great overview of Korea, guide was knowledgable and friendly, value for money as many delicious and authentic meals were included. Hotels were modern and comfortable. My only complaint was the hotel in Seoul was not as well located as it could have been a bit far from the main sites. However for the price this was an extremely good value tour and I enjoyed it very much and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

The organisation by the local tour company was good and the local guide excellent. The distances between sites required, out of necessity, some significantly long periods on the road. We appreciate there must be a balance between travel and places visited but perhaps an "extra day' might be something to consider (e.g. perhaps stopping overnight in Haeundae Beach) On balance the locations visited were all of interest although slight individual modifications might be helpful but that comes down to personal preferences (e.g. the winter Olympic site was just to the ski jump slope whereas we might have seen the locations of other of the winter sports). The hotels adopted for the overnight stops were generally well appointed although the Gyeongju hotel was acceptable but not as good as the remaining three So overall we were satisfied, and the tour was to our expectations

My tour guide Helena was wonderful and I had a great time during this tour!
Amazing - highly recommend.
I enjoyed this tour from start to finish. Mark, our tour guide was helpful, knowledgeable and entertaining. I learned a lot about Korean culture, beautiful places and sumptuous dishes. Our driver, Mr Kim, was also very kind, friendly and kept us all safe. This tour included 5 star, really cool hotels and three meals a day. I was able to eat all the Korean food that I have been wanting to try. I will not hesitate to use Hana Tours again next time or recommend it to my friends. What a memorable and wonderful trip!

With family in tow, Korea's Byeong Hun An intends to enjoy Masters return

Korea’s Byeong Hun An will make his fifth Masters appearance at revered Augusta National, and a first since 2020, but the drive down Magnolia Lane will be very different and feel extra special this week.

It will probably be a bit noisier as well in his courtesy car, with a growing family in tow.

The 32-year-old An qualified for the season’s first major through the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking as of last week, which marked his second straight major appearance after he played his way into The Open Championship last summer.

Lining up alongside the game’s elite reflects his resurgence following a mini-slump that saw him lose his PGA TOUR card in 2021.

“It is good to be back," An said. "I have never been to the Masters with my kids and wife, and it will be my first time with them which makes it even better. I wish to put up a good showing. It is never easy going into the Masters but I feel great,” said An, who is presently ranked 44 th in the world.

When An made his Masters debut in 2010 as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion, he was wet behind the ears and 14 years on, this week will herald his 190th PGA TOUR start where he has amassed 25 career top-10s, including three this season which has propelled him to seventh place in the FedExCup points list.

With his wife Jamie, their lives now include two young children, Sunwoo, who is 4, and Jiwoo who turned 1 last month. The growing family means that An is excited for the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday, a Masters tradition unlike any other where players and their families get to be part of the fun-filled competition. Jamie will caddie for An, while Sunwoo, who is learning to play golf, may well attempt a shot during the event.

“Family life’s been great,” An said. “It takes your mind away from golf. After tournaments, you go back and you have kids around, you don’t have time to think about golf. Obviously, when you’re at a golf course, you want to think about golf, you want to work hard. It’s nice to have their support. It’s the best. When the family is around, there are more things to do. You go out for a walk, play with the kids or whatever. It takes the mind away from golf.”

His new approach to life, and towards the game, has largely been instilled by swing coach, Sean Foley whom An labeled “the Gandhi of golf.”

“He helps a lot with things away from golf," said An. "He talks about other stuff, and not just how to play. There are some things which are unteachable by other people, and he’s been a big help. I have lessons with him twice a week and we hit balls for two hours and I’ll probably hit like only 100 balls, and we talk for an hour and a half about other stuff.”

While An has yet to win on the PGA TOUR – he has five career runner-up finishes including a playoff loss at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January – the Korean knows that lining up along the stars at Augusta National is a privilege to cherish: “I have never seen a golf course managed so well like Augusta National," he mused. "With their own traditions, there definitely is some wonderful atmosphere. Every golfer dreams of playing in the Masters, so I feel great to go back.

“It is very special to us, golfers. I’m glad to be part of this but I don’t want to put pressure on myself. I will prepare just as other events. The focus is the same.”

An, whose best finish from four previous starts was T33 in 2017, will have compatriots Sungjae Im, who finished runner-up at the Masters in 2020, Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim for company at the 88 th playing of the Masters. It will also be a memorable week for Si Woo who will have his newborn son, Theo, in attendance with his wife and former Korean LPGA winner, Jihyun – who hit a shot at the Par 3 Contest last year.

“I was able to participate with my wife last year, and this year, we have one more member to the family. It will be an enjoyable week for the three of us,” said Si Woo, who is a four-time PGA TOUR winner and making his eighth consecutive Masters start.

He enters the week in good form, having not missed a single cut all season with one top-10 to go with five other top-25s.

“I'm pretty confident going into the week," said Si Woo. "Thinking back to my first Masters (in 2017 which was the only year he missed the cut), the course was tough. But as this year is my eighth, I feel a bit more relaxed as I am getting used to the golf course."

Biden says he backs Japan's outreach to North Korea and says he's still open to talks with Kim

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said Wednesday that Japan's attempts to set up a leader-to-leader summit with North Korea is “a good thing,” and reiterated his administration's willingness for its own talks without preconditions.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Biden were using the Japanese leader's official visit to Washington to spotlight strengthened defense and intelligence ties to address threats from North Korea and China. The U.S. blessing of the potential talks between Japan and North Korea comes as its own efforts to reopen a line of communication with Pyongyang have gone unrequited.

“We welcome the opportunity of our allies to initiate dialogue with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Biden said during a Rose Garden press conference with Kishida. "As I've said many times, we're open to dialogue ourselves without preconditions with the DPRK."

Kishida, for his part, said, “The window of a discussion with North Korea is open. He added, “The establishment of a meaningful relationship between Japan and North Korea is in the interests of both Japan and North Korea and it could be hugely beneficial to the peace and stability of the region.”

The Biden administration has repeatedly expressed openness to talks with Kim since taking office in 2021, but has never received a response. Kim and former President Donald Trump held a trio of meetings during the latter's presidency which did little to curtail North Korea's advancing nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Both Biden and Kishida said any talks must bring about a swift resolution to the issue of Japanese abductees taken by North Korea.

Girl group aespa attends the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in Seoul, Dec. 11, 2021. AFP-Yonhap

Girl group aespa will kick off its second world tour in Seoul in June, the group's agency, SM Entertainment, said Thursday.

The "SYNK: Parallel Line" tour will begin with two gigs at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in southern Seoul on June 29-30 and continue to 13 other cities — the five Japanese cities of Fukuoka, Nagoya, Saitama, Osaka and Tokyo, as well as Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Jakarta, Bangkok, Sydney and Melbourne — until September.

The K-pop quartet has added two concerts at Tokyo Dome on Aug. 17-18 to the original schedule due to the high demand for tickets for its Japanese shows, according to the agency.

It added that the group is also preparing for a return to the local music scene next month. (Yonhap)
