Never been much of a Plane Guy — I leave that to Sir Charlie Hall, master of flight simulators . But Top Gun: Maverick might just leave my head permanently in the clouds. A new trailer teases the long-awaited sequel’s ground drama, and more importantly, the high-speed aerial stunts star Tom Cruise ( The Mummy ) has cooked up for the film, which hits theaters this spring after many delays.

Top Gun: Maverick finds Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell graduating from rebel test pilot to instructor, leading a team of new TOPGUN hot shots in what a Paramount synopsis calls “a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen.” The new squad includes Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), aka “Rooster,” the son of Goose, who was killed during a training exercise in the original 1986 film. Maverick confronting his past, deepest fears, new enemies, yadda yadda, PLANES.

“Everything you see in this film is real,” Cruise said way back at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con , where he premiered the first footage from the film. “We’re working with the Navy. I wanted to give you an experience of being inside that aircraft.”

Mission potentially accomplished. Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski ( Oblivion , Tron: Legacy ) seemed to have a found a modern way to innovate on Tony Scott’s original Top Gun action by mounting cameras inside real planes and soaring them in every which way. Even on the small screen, it looks quite grand. Am I a Plane Guy now? I might be a Plane Guy. Charlie, boot up Flight Simulator .

Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters and IMAX on May 27.

New Top Gun: Maverick trailer flies in ahead of its May release

Tom Cruise is back as Maverick in the long-awaited Top Gun sequel.

Tom Cruise is back in the cockpit in the latest trailer for Top Gun: Maverick , the long-awaited sequel to his 1986 fan-favorite. The movie, expected to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2022 when it hits movie screens on May 27, looks like it is doing everything in its power to wow audiences with incredible aerial action. Plus, what would a Top Gun movie be without shirtless beach athletics?

Top Gun: Maverick takes place 30 years after the events of Top Gun . Already in the history books as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Cruise) now works as a test pilot, desperately trying to avoid promotions that would take him out of the sky and put him behind a desk. However, when he gets assigned to take a teaching position at the Top Gun training program, he must confront his past as he instructs a new generation of hot-shot pilots.

The brand new trailer (the first in a long time for the movie as its had to deal with a number of release date shuffles ) dives into a bit more into the plot and the specific character dynamics, particularly Miles Teller as Goose’s son and Glen Powell as his likely rival. But this is a Top Gun movie, so the aerial acrobatics take center stage and boy do they look impressive. Check out the Top Gun: Maverick trailer directly below.

Maverick is one of Cruise’s most iconic roles, so a lot of fans are excited to see him playing the cocky but brilliant aviator. In addition to Teller and Powell as two of the new young pilots, the Top Gun: Maverick cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Manny Jacinto, Monica Barbaro, Jean Louis Kelly, Raymond Lee, Jay Ellis and Charles Parnell. Also, Iceman himself is expected to make an appearance, as Val Kilmer will also return for the sequel.

In case you were wondering, Top Gun 's iconic theme song, " Danger Zone ," will be in the movie.

Before general audiences are going to get to see Top Gun: Maverick on the big screen (where it will play exclusively upon release), the blockbuster is going to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in France, taking place May 17-28.

The Cannes Film Festival literally kicked into overdrive (overflight?) on Wednesday as Tom Cruise and his Top Gun: Maverick team touched down on the Palais for a high-octane premiere that included eight fighter jets zooming above the event, expelling smoke in red and blue to match the colors of the French flag.

The actor was already destined to be the biggest draw of Cannes 2022 long before he hit the Croisette, where Top Gun: Maverick is getting splashy promotion by Paramount ahead of its global rollout on May 25. But even by the festival’s own standards, Cruise received the sort of rapturous reception that could only befit one of Hollywood’s most successful and globally renowned stars. And after the final frame hit the screen close to 10 p.m., the audience responded with a six-minute standing ovation that brought Cruise to tears, closing out an epic day.

Having taken part in a career retrospective earlier in the day — a “MasterClass Conversation” with French journalist Didier Allouch in the 1,000-seat Debussy Theatre — Cruise was gifted with another tribute before the screening, led by Canned festival director Thierry Fremaux, in honor of his long-running career at the center of international pop culture. Fremaux delivered remarks (in French) and introduced a 13-minute clip reel that showcased every entry on his filmography.

Cruise hugged Fremaux (who encouraged the audience to put down their phones and put their hands together) before taking the microphone to share remarks, inviting all the filmmakers in attendance to stand and be recognized and shouting out his close collaborators at Paramount. “They all worked so hard to bring this to the big screen, and it’s a dream to be here,” Cruise said. “I’m never going to forget this evening.”

Elle Fanning may not either. The actress, a L’Oreal ambassador and frequent Cannes attendee, was seated in the Palais and received a special shout-out from Cruise. He recalled meeting her while working with her sister, Dakota, on the 2005 blockbuster War of the Worlds .

He then turned his attention back to the festival and his love for cinema. “Thank you for this time,” he said. “I make these movies for all of you.” Fremaux then offered a special surprise, announcing that the festival was presenting Cruise with a Palme d’Or. Cruise, looking speechless, accepted with a “Wow,” as the audience stood up for another standing ovation, one of the only times in recent memory that an actor has received multiple standing ovations prior to the first frame of a film hitting the screen.

But before all that took place, Cruise arrived at the Cannes red carpet just before 7 p.m. and spent a healthy 10 minutes cruising up and down the street to greet fans, some of whom had been waiting for hours under the blazing Côte d’Azur sun for the movie star to emerge. He made it worth their while by signing autographs and DVDs and posing for selfies.

As seen on the Palais big screen, he had to be pulled away from the crush of admirers to make his way in front of the swath of photographers and pose alongside his director, Joseph Kosinski, and blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer. They were joined by fellow Top Gun: Maverick stars Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm (who straightened Cruise’s bow tie on the carpet), Glen Powell, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis, Lewis Pullman and others.

Top Gun: Maverick has been winning rave reviews from critics since it made its world premiere earlier this month in San Diego atop the retired aircraft carrier USS Midway .

“Your enjoyment of Top Gun: Maverick might depend on how much you’re willing to shut out the real world and surrender to movie-star magic,” wrote   THR chief film critic David Rooney. “Which this superior sequel — directed with virtuoso technical skill, propulsive pacing and edge-of-your-seat flying sequences by Joseph Kosinski — has in abundance.”

For the second time in eight months, Tom Cruise thrilled attendees at the CineEurope exhibition conference, appearing live on stage here in Barcelona this morning to cap off Paramount ’s slate presentation. The room again positively thundered with applause as everyone leapt to their feet for an extended standing ovation in honor of the Top Gun: Maverick star.

Cruise, who is fresh off a trip to Korea to promote TGM which opens there tomorrow, and which has crossed $900M at the global box office , was effusive in his praise for exhibitors. “I came here just to say thank you for everything… I know what it takes to do what you do… Thank you for allowing me to have the career I’ve had.”

Somewhat reminiscent of what he said when he surprised CineEurope last October , Cruise continued, “I’m going to keep delivering these films for you… You know I’m here for you and I know you’re here for me.”

Cruise’s latest visit was again kept under a veil of secrecy as he jetted in from Seoul, making a pit stop here on his way back to the set of Mission: Impossible 8 .

In other remarks, Cruise talked about his joy at seeing people return to cinemas and exhibition’s part in that, “To have theaters open means the world to me.” He concluded with “Have a great summer, I think we’re going to have some great times ahead” and promised to be back next year with Dead Reckoning .

Tom Cruise To Star In The Revenant Director Alejandro G Iñárritu’s Next Film

Though he's been happy hanging off of planes (or flying them) for the last few years in the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises, Tom Cruise is also looking to get back to the sort of auteur-driven, smaller-scale work that saw him win acclaim with the likes of Magnolia . Now, on the heels of him making a deal with Warner Bros., it appears he's tracked down his choice. Cruise is on to star in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's next, untitled film.

Little is known about the new project, as the director is keeping it top secret for now. Deadline has learned that he wrote it in 2023 with Sabina Berman alongside his Birdman collaborators Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone.

Iñárritu took a break between 2015's Oscar-winning The Revenant and 2022's Bardo: False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths , which was released via Netflix.

As for Cruise, he has a number of projects on his To Do list, including a much-mooted movie to be shot in space with Doug Liman in the director's pilot seat. But from the sounds of the new report, he'll next work on the Iñárritu film, which Warner Bros. and Legendary are in negotiations to acquire.

And this new development would seem to put paid to Cruise's involvement in Quentin Tarantino's next — and potentially final — film, The Movie Critic , which is another project he's shown interest in. But then, this is Tom Cruise: he could always try to do both at the same time while driving a ski-doo over a bus.

Os fãs de 'Piratas do Caribe' podem finalmente respirar aliviados (ou não): as próximas sequências estão, sim, em vias de serem produzidas, e logo uma tripulação inteira irá se aventurar novamente por águas misteriosas. A notícia veio da boca do próprio produtor da franquia, Jerry Bruckheimer, que para um portal de notícias americano revelou os próximos passos da saga e ainda traçou o destino de Johnny Depp como o icônico Jack Sparrow.

A última vez que a cultura pop viu os famosos piratas viajando por aventuras místicas foi em 2017, quando o quinto capítulo 'A Vingança de Salazar' estreou nos cinemas de todo o mundo. O filme, estrelado pelo óbvio Depp, ao lado de Keira Knightley como a apaixonante Elizabeth Swann, também contou com a presença de Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush e Kaya Scodelario. Rendeu aos bolsos da Disney quase 800 milhões de dólares, repetindo o sucesso dos quatro anteriores.

Desde então, contudo, nenhuma outra sequência chegou às telas do cinema, e o mar de novidades começou a virar um deserto para os fãs da franquia. Nos últimos sete anos, inúmeros anúncios que morreram na praia foram feitos, incluindo uma versão com elenco totalmente feminino, que seria comandado por Margot Robbie. Ao que pareceu tempos mais tarde, o projeto foi cancelado.

Com os escândalos envolvendo Depp e sua intrincada ação legal contra a ex-esposa, Amber Heard (e vice versa), o futuro da série realmente pareceu incerto - e a carreira de Depp também.

Agora, Bruckheimer resolveu abrir as portas do cofre secreto de informações sobre 'Piratas do Caribe', dando um norte para tantas pessoas perdidas em meio a falta de novidades. Para o ComicBook.com, ele disse: "Nós vamos fazer um reboot de 'Piratas', para que fique mais fácil juntar tudo, porque aí você não precisa ficar esperando por certos atores".

Apesar de não ter citado ninguém nominalmente, há quem especule que estes sejam o próprio Depp ou mesmo Margot Robbie.

Com a confirmação de um reboot, entretanto, é lógico pensar que a franquia se afastará da narrativa com Sparrow, ou seja, nada de Johnny Depp à vista.

Ainda em 2022, o site The Hollywood Reporter' havia conversado com o megaprodutor, que disse que tinha dois projetos de 'Piratas do Caribe' em mãos. "Nós desenvolvemos dois deles — um com a Margot Robbie e outro com um elenco mais jovem", ele disse na época. "O com a Margot precisa de alguns reparos. O do elenco novo está mais perto [de estar pronto]. Com sorte, faremos ambos".

Na mesma entrevista de 2022, quando questionado sobre a participação de Johnny Depp em 'Piratas do Caribe 6', ele respondeu, de forma evasiva: "Eu adoraria tê-lo no filme - é tudo que posso dizer".

Depois da confirmação de que o destino de 'Piratas' é um reboot, fica difícil acreditar que Sparrow terá sequer alguns minutos de tela.

O sexto capítulo da franquia está sendo roteirizado por Craig Mazin, que também fez scripts de dois sucessos da televisão, 'The Last of Us' e 'Chernobyl'. Ao lado dele, também assina o projeto Ted Elliot, responsável pelo texto da animação 'Shrek'.

Ao The Los Angeles Times, Mazin disse que ficou surpreso ao ouvir que a Disney havia aceitado o projeto, uma vez que ele era 'muito estranho'. "Nós apresentamos a proposta e pensamos que não havia como eles comprarem, é muito estranho. E eles compraram! E aí, nós escrevemos um roteiro incrível, e a greve aconteceu e agora todo mundo está esperando", revelou, em agosto do ano passado.

Até agora, o sexto 'Piratas' não tem nome, nem sinopse, muito menos elenco confirmado. O que se pode ter certeza, entretanto, é que algo completamente novo e, ao que afirmam os próprios produtores, 'estranho', vem por aí para abalar a franquia bilionária.

Tom Cruise is genuinely scary as a suave hitman in Michael Mann's slick crime thriller. Jamie Foxx plays a cab driver who unknowingly picks up Cruise's contract killer and agrees to drive him to various locations for a hefty sum. Foxx's Max Durocher soon discovers that the man he knows as Vincent is actually on a killing spree, murdering different targets at each stop.

Mann builds a tense back-and-forth between the two men, making them into worthy adversaries even though Vincent seems to have every advantage. Mann gives Los Angeles at night a gorgeous, otherworldly feel, the perfect backdrop for this battle between the sadistic and the noble.

Before "legacy sequels" were all the rage, Martin Scorsese directed this 25-years-later follow-up to 1961's The Hustler, with Paul Newman returning as pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Eddie is older but not necessarily wiser, and his love for the game is rekindled when he spots hotshot young player Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise).

Cruise and Newman have excellent chemistry as two control freaks who develop a wary respect but maintain their rivalry. Scorsese shoots the pool scenes with flair, bringing a dynamic excitement to the many games of nine-ball. The movie is a winning combination of Scorsese's cinematic creativity and the Hollywood charisma of its two stars.

Author Anne Rice was initially outraged by the casting of Tom Cruise as her popular vampire character Lestat de Lioncourt, but she changed her mind completely after seeing Neil Jordan's film. Jerry Maguire's catch phrases have been so extensively quoted and recycled that it's easy to forget this movie is more than just a collection of quips. It's a passionate, open-hearted romantic comedy from a master of the form, writer-director Cameron Crowe, and it features one of Tom Cruise's most purely likable performances.

Tom Cruise is only one part of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling, multi-character epic, but he may be the most memorable part. The Mission: Impossible movies have become an all-consuming project for Tom Cruise in recent years, and they remain one of the most satisfying blockbuster franchises in Hollywood. The series reached an apex with this fourth movie, directed by animation veteran Brad Bird.

Bird brings an animator's anything-goes approach to the movie's massive set pieces, including Cruise's Ethan Hunt climbing the side of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, still one of the greatest stunts ever captured onscreen. Anyone who only knows Risky Business from the often-parodied moment of Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear may be surprised to discover an emotionally engaging and sometimes dark coming-of-age dramedy. It's a bit like a cross between Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Graduate, with Cruise as a recent high school graduate who finds a connection with a prostitute played by Rebecca De Mornay.

It features the requisite crazy parties and occasionally crass jokes of an '80s teen comedy, but that's balanced by a strong undercurrent of melancholy. Cruise captures the emptiness of a privileged teen staring into a predetermined future that he starts to realize may be meaningless.

Tom Cruise is probably not the first name that would come to mind to play a German officer during World War II, but the filmmakers behind Valkyrie pull it off. They cast Cruise and actors of various nationalities as the members of a secret German organization that conspired to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and nearly succeeded.

Set in the waning days of the war, Valkyrie generates plenty of suspense, even though anyone watching almost certainly already knows the outcome. It's a fascinating history lesson, a taut thriller, and a true ensemble piece. Cruise plays the man in charge of the plan, but he makes room for the likes of Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh, all working toward the same goal.

Tom Cruise lines up next lead film role

It's a mystery project...

Tom Cruise has lined up his next lead role, with the star set to join the cast for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest film.

Cruise will produce the feature, which currently has no plot details. The project will also be Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant , which saw Leonardo DiCaprio win an Academy Award for his lead performance.

While the untitled project is still a fair while away, Cruise is busy preparing for the eighth instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, which has seen its release date delayed by a year.

Director Christopher McQuarrie recently spoke about the upcoming feature, teasing that they would be upping the ante in the stunt department, telling Collider : “Tom and I are constantly re-evaluating our own work and asking ourselves how we could have done it better.

“We've done underwater sequences previously. We've worked underwater in Edge of Tomorrow , and we worked underwater in Rogue Nation , and we left very dissatisfied with those sequences.

“And we analyse why we were dissatisfied. What were all the factors working against us? The biggest being not having real knowledge in that area. Everything you're looking at in Dead Reckoning is the application of knowledge from the previous sequence.”

The seventh film, Dead Reckoning , featured the shock death of Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust, with the star addressing her character’s fate : “ Mission is such a huge dedication, and I've done it now, and it's fantastic. And it's amazing, and Christopher and Tom wrote this incredible character.

“There's just that much you can do with a character, I find, and I'm entitled to my own opinion on this too. I want her to go rogue. I'm interested in the dark side, I don't want to be a team member, I'm not interested in that. And I felt like that was where we were headed.”

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is now available to rent or purchase . An untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film will be releasing on May 23, 2025.
