Planning a Kobe day trip from Osaka or Kyoto? We’ve put together this one day itinerary to help you make the most of it.

While it’s known best for its expensive but delicious beef, Kobe has way more to offer. And since it’s only 30–45 minutes by train from Osaka, Kobe makes for a great day trip destination.

Kobe has a fascinating history, having played an important part in being the main harbour for international trade after Japan opened its borders for the first time in 200 years back in 1868. As the 6th biggest city in Japan and the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe is definitely a place to consider visiting.

There are quite a lot of things to do in Kobe, so this day trip itinerary is just a suggestion (this is what we did on our trip to Kobe). Feel free to take from it with works for you or make any changes necessary.

If you’re planning to take a day trip to Kobe yourself, I’ve put together this itinerary to help you make the most of it. Everything you need to know can be found below!

10. Make your way back to Osaka

Kobe day trip itinerary.

Here’s how to make the most of your Osaka to Kobe day trip:

1. Take the train from Osaka to Kobe

To start your day trip to Kobe, get on the train from Osaka (or Kyoto, depending on where you’re staying!). The journey itself shouldn’t take longer than 30–45 minutes.

Try to leave early though. Especially if you only have one day in Kobe, you want to make sure you make the most of it.

2. Explore Kitano

1868 is a year that will be mentioned a few times throughout this itinerary. It’s a big one for Kobe (and Japan), as it was the year the city opened up to foreign trade after the country’s borders were closed for over 200 years.

Because of this, Kobe became the home of many foreign merchants and diplomats. The area they settled in was called Kitano-cho. The houses they built and lived in were definitely inspired by their homelands – resulting in quite a few Western-style mansions that still stand here today.

It’s such a big part of Kobe’s history. Walking through the area gives you a good idea of what life used to be like in this part of the city. Many of the houses can be entered for a small fee, with some of them having a museum inside. But even if you’re not planning to go inside, it’s nice to have a little wander around – it’s on the way to the next point on this Kobe itinerary anyways!

There is also a special Starbucks in this part of Kobe. It’s located in one of the colonial-styled buildings and is decorated inside. If you’ve not had your caffeine fix before, this is the time to grab a coffee.

A full list of all the former foreign residences can be found on their official website .

3. Take the Kobe Ropeway

To get to the next stop on our list (the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens), you have a choice of hiking up the hill or taking the iconic ropeway. Spoiler alert: I’d recommend getting the ropeway!

You can choose to pay for a single ticket to get you up the hill and walk down. This is a more cost-efficient way than getting a return ticket, especially since the walk down is quite easy and filled with beautiful plants to look at. If you’re not sure, you can always buy a return ticket (which also gives you the option to walk down to the mid-way station and use the ropeway for the remaining part).

From the ropeway, you get to join some of the best views in Kobe. The journey takes around 10 minutes and you can see as far as Osaka on a clear day!

kobe ropeway station

4. Wander through Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens

Once you reach the end of the ropeway, you will have arrived at the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens .

The ropeway ticket also includes entry to the gardens, so it’s definitely worth getting. As mentioned before, you can choose to get a return ticket, walk through the gardens to the mid-station and take the ropeway back. Or, you can choose to walk all the way down.

The gardens are vast! Divided into 12 areas, each part of the herb garden has a different theme with different plants. In total, there are more than 75,000 plants – and there’s something to enjoy in every season.

You can also find a herbal foot bath, a couple of museums (one about fragrances and one about spices) and a restaurant with a viewing deck. You can easily spend a couple of hours here, and since the walk down the hill is filled with beautiful plants and gardens, it’s a real treat – especially on a sunny day!

5. Visit Ikuta Shrine

Once you’re back down, head over to Ikuta Shrine. Kobe isn’t a large city, especially the area that we’re covering in this day trip guide, so you can avoid public transport.

Most of the sights are only 10–15 minutes from each other on foot, and wandering through Japanese cities is always a treat. You’ll never know what you’ll find in the small side streets. Make sure you’ve got Google Maps installed on your phone (the only essential travel app in Japan !), and you’ll easily be able to find the best routes.

Anyways, back to Ikuta Shrine. This beautiful shrine is one of the oldest in Kobe (and possibly one of the oldest in the whole of Japan), dating all the way back to 201.

The main shrine is quite impressive. A large torii gate welcomes you and admission is free. Many people come here to pray for romance and safe childbirth.

Behind the main shrine, you can find a small garden called the Ikuta Forest. It even has a row of torii gates (almost like a smaller version of Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha ).

6. Kobe Chinatown Nankinmachi

From Ikuta Shrine, Kobe’s Chinatown is only a 15-minute walk. This is the next stop on our Kobe itinerary.

Nankinmachi is one of Japan’s three Chinatowns (the other ones can be found in Yokohama and Nagasaki ). It’s not very large, but it has a lovely atmosphere and it’s a great place to grab some street food.

Since Kobe is a harbour city, many foreigners settled here when Japan opened its borders to foreign traders in 1868, including the Chinese. This is the area where they settled. During the Second World War, a large part of the area was burned down and it wasn’t rebuilt properly until the 1970s.

However, nowadays, it’s a lively area of Kobe filled with street food vendors, restaurants and shops.

7. Explore Kobe port

The area near Kobe Port (or Kobe Bay) is another great place to explore. And there are quite a few sights to see in this area!

For starters, the Kobe Earthquake memorial can be found here. In 1995, a terrible earthquake took the lives of 6,400 people in Kobe.

A little bit further, you can see the iconic Kobe Tower. The tower stands 108 meters tall and is shaped like an hourglass (or a traditional Japanese drum). It’s possible to visit the observation deck in the tower for a 360 degrees view of the city.

Near the seafront, there’s also a Starbucks, a park and the Be Kobe sign for pictures.

be kobe sign

8. Visit Kobe Harborland

A little further (between the JR Kobe Station and Kobe Port) lies Kobe Harborland . While it almost sounds like a theme park, it’s more like a shopping and entertainment area in the city.

There is a big shopping mall (Umie), lots of restaurants, and even a Ferris wheel (that lights up at night!).

9. Eat Kobe beef

And, of course, we can’t leave Kobe without trying its famous beef. If you’re not sure what Kobe beef is exactly, here’s a quick recap. Kobe beef is a type of Japanese Wagyu beef and it’s known to be the most delicious (and expensive) beef in the world.

This incredibly tender meat comes from special Tajima cattle raised in the Hyogo prefecture (where Kobe is located). Every year, only around 3,000 cows are selected as good enough to be classed as official Kobe beef. With such limited supply, you can already guess that this isn’t a cheap takeaway meal…

But what better place to try Kobe beef than in Kobe itself?

After having walked around the city all day, you will most definitely already have seen some signs from restaurants advertising Kobe beef. However, if you want to try the real deal, you’ll have to be careful. Always do your research! Some restaurants try to be clever and sell regular beef as “Kobe beef” as it’s sold in Kobe – that’s not the same as actual Kobe beef.

To make sure you eat (and pay for) real Kobe beef, make sure the restaurant has a plaque and certificate to show you. This will prove the steak you’re eating is officially classed as Kobe beef. It sounds a bit over the top, but if you’re going to spend £100 on a steak, you want it to be worth it, right?

We ended up having our Kobe steak at Mouriya Sannomiyaten. And I have to agree, it was the best steak I’ve ever had in my life. The whole experience was really great too – we had a private chef cooking the meat in front of us, explaining how to eat it properly.

kobe day tours

If you’re on a budget but still want to try Kobe beef, it can be worth looking for lunch deals instead. Some restaurants offer cheaper lunch options including real Kobe beef – you can then always go to Chinatown in the evening for dinner instead!

kobe beef certificate

Luckily, you don’t have to rush to get a train back to Osaka since it’s only 30–45 minutes. Trains leave often, so you’ll have some time to wander around and enjoy Kobe at night.

There are some great bars and arcades to check out, or you can head back earlier (there are so many great things to do in Osaka at night too!).

Is Kobe worth a day trip?

It depends. While Kobe is a lovely city with a ton of great things to do, there are some better places to visit nearby. If you’re visiting Japan for the first time and you don’t have a lot of time, it may be better to skip Kobe and spend more time in Osaka, Kyoto or take a day trip to Nara . That is, unless you have a very specific reason for wanting to add Kobe to your Japan itinerary .

If you do have enough time, Kobe definitely makes for a great day trip from Osaka . There’s more than enough to do to fill a day (even a weekend!), plus eating real Kobe beef in the city makes for a great experience.

Nele (Nay-la) graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with an English and Creative Writing Degree and has lived in the UK for nearly 10 years. She has had an interest in Japan and its culture for as long as she can remember. Since her first trip in 2018 surpassed all expectations, she has continued to return to Japan to explore more of all it has got to offer. You can read her full story here .

Kobe Day Trip Guide – Things to Do and Places to Visit in Kobe!

Kobe Skyline

Kobe is the capital city of Hyogo prefecture that has the seventh largest population in Japan. Kobe is located in the Kansai region and it takes only 30 minutes to get there from Osaka by train, which makes it really attractive for tourists to visit these two cities. Kobe is one of the largest port cities in Japan along with Yokohama , and has been an important place for trade since Japan reopened the port in 1868 after isolation for over 200 years.

Because of its history, Kobe has a unique atmosphere that has been influenced by other cultures. You will see western influenced architecture in the city but also Asian influences like Chinatown. It is a popular spot for couples (to be) at night also, because of its decorative lights and romantic atmosphere. This huge herb garden is located in the vicinity of Sin-Kobe station. You can get to the ropeway platform from the station in roughly 5 minutes, and then take the ropeway up to the top of the mountain where the herb garden is located. During your ride to the top of the mountain and the herb garden you can enjoy the impressive, amazing view of Kobe city. The garden at the top is divided into 12 areas with different themes, and about 200 types of herbs and flowers are enjoyed by visitors throughout the year.

In 1858, Japan agreed to sign a treaty that required the country to open 5 ports, including the port of Kobe. As a result, the number of foreigners living in Japan drastically increased. The government allowed them to live in some designated areas, including Kobe Kitano Ijinkan. Kobe Kitano Ijinkan is a district, located at the foot of Rokkosan, where in the 19th century a number of western-style designed buildings and residences were constructed. These mansions ( Ijikan ), were used as residences for diplomats and international merchants. Even though Japan experienced several wars in the 20th century, some of these old buildings still remain and attract visitors from all over the world.

Kobe Luminarie is an annual light festival held every winter since 1995, to commemorate a big earthquake that caused some serious damage in the same year. The event takes place in the vicinity of Motomachi Station, where you can watch several places and structures being illuminated. You can’t spend time in Kobe and not try the famous Kobe beef, one of the most delicious and expensive types of wagyu beef in Japan! Only cattle that meet the very strict criteria by the Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Association can call themselves and be served as Kobe beef. You will definitely be surprised how tender and flavorful the beef is!

Kobe Beef

There is of course a great number of restaurants serving Kobe beef in Kobe. Our recommendation is “TOR ROAD STEAK AOYAMA”, a small but welcoming restaurant with friendly and hospitable staff. Here you can enjoy Kobe beef at an affordable price. We recommend reserving your table as they get really crowded even on weekdays.

Maya-san or Mt. Maya is one of the major peaks of the Rokko mountains. The Kikuseidai Observation Platform on the top of the mountain can be reached in two ways; you can hike your way to the summit or take the cable car ropeway system. The hiking trails start just north of Shin-Kobe station and will lead you to the summit in 3-5 hrs, depending on the trails (and your pace). You can find a map of the hiking trails here .

The other option is going by public transport. From Sannomiya station you need to take a bus, a cable car, and a ropeway to reach the top. This may sound like a bit of a hustle, but the (night)view of Kobe and Osaka is definitely worth it!

If you like Japanese Sake, you should definitely go to the Nada District. Nada is the top sake producing region in Japan. They have great resources to make delicious sake because of the availability of high quality rice, suitable water and favorable weather conditions in this area. There are many Sake breweries operating in this district but Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum is our recommendation. They depict the sake making process in an interesting way at the exhibition and of course, you can try freshly brewed Sake at the tasting area.

Hi! I am Japanese and I live in Kobe. Rokko mountainrange is very long. So there are many place to see night view. Both of them,Rokko Garden Terrace and Mount Maya, are very famous place to see it.and these mountains is next to each other. It is little difficult for visiter to know ,there are many mountains in Rokko mountain range ,and Mount Maya and Rokko are one of them. Inside that Rokko mount is the highest in this mountainrange,so this mountainrange is named “Rokko mountain range” . So Rokko Garden Terrace is in mount Rokko. Please don’t misunderstand Rokko mountainrange and mount Rokko.

Kobe is a great city to explore over several days, or if you’re pressed for time, even as a day trip from another city in the Kansai region. Our one-day and two-day itineraries allow you to make the best use of your time.

Kobe Sannomiya Center Gai

Kobe is easy to navigate, so you can swap out places as you like for these itineraries. Choose the best one below to suit your schedule.

  • For information on the sights mentioned here, see our Things to Do in Kobe page.
  • For transport information, see our Getting Around Kobe page.
  • For restaurant suggestions, see our Places to Eat in Kobe page.
  • For hotel suggestions, see our Kobe Hotels and Kobe Ryokan pages.

Kobe One-Day Itinerary

One day is enough to see some of the main sights in Kobe. This itinerary assumes you’re staying overnight in Kobe. While it can be done as a day trip from a neighbouring city such as Osaka or Kyoto, it will be a longer day with a rather early start. If this is the case, adjust according to how much time you have. For some suggested hotels, see the Kobe Hotels page.

Hotel La Suite Kobe Harborland

8:30am Shin-Kobe Station or Sannomiya Station

Begin at one of the stations above, depending on where you’re staying or which train line you’ve used to travel to Kobe. From here, make your way to the next destination.

9:00am Explore Kitano-cho

Begin your morning by strolling around the Kitano-cho district at the foot of the Rokko mountain range. This former residential area for foreign merchants and diplomats preserves some of the old mansions built around the late 19th century. It’s also a pleasant and attractive neighbourhood to walk around. Enjoy the architecture and maybe visit one of the former mansions.

With the exception of the Dutch Museum and Fragrance House, which opens at 9:00am, most of the Ijinkan mansions open at 9:30am. If you don’t feel like paying the entrance fees for any of these places, drop by the Starbucks in Kitano-cho instead, which is housed in a converted former mansion.

Ikuta Shrine in Kobe City

10:15am Walk to and explore the Sannomiya area

Begin meandering towards the waterfront, in the general direction of Motomachi and the waterfront. There are several options. You could veer a little westwards to visit Sorakuen Garden , drop by Ikuta Shrine , or stop over at Cafe Freundlieb for a mid-morning coffee and sandwich. Continuing to head towards the waterfront will take you through the Kyu-kyoryuchi area, which is another former foreign settlement in Kobe with a number of Western-style buildings including consulates and department stores.

Those with more energy could head to the Sannomiya Center Gai shopping arcade, and walk from the Sannomiya end to the Motomachi end. It’s easy to explore this area on foot; alternatively, you can take a bus to get to where you want.

12:00pm Lunch in Kobe Chinatown

It’s midday, so it’s time to refuel. Nankinmachi, or Kobe’s Chinatown, has many street food stalls and restaurants to choose from. The steamed buns are always a good bet, as are a plate of gyoza.

1:30pm Sake-tasting in the Nada district

After lunch, take the train or bus eastwards to the Nada district. This quiet area is home to a handful of excellent sake breweries, which means opportunities to learn about sake-making but also plenty of free samples. You could easily spend several hours strolling around. We especially like the Sawa-no-Tsuru Museum. Find a map of the Nada breweries here .

4:30pm Head back to central Kobe

Take the train or bus back to the city center. Have a cafe break or rest at your hotel.

6:30pm Dinner in Kobe

Day trippers could return elsewhere for dinner, but since you’re in Kobe, it’s worth checking out a Kobe beef restaurant. Check out our Places to Eat in Kobe page for some ideas. After dinner, head to Meriken Park for a stroll along the waterfront. The night skyline is pretty, especially when the whole area is illuminated. Alternatively, you could take a ride on the Shin-Kobe Ropeway for an aerial view of the city below.

Kobe Two-Day Itinerary

Two days is a good amount of time to spend in Kobe. It allows you to slow down a little and thoroughly savour all the sights you’re seeing. We suggest following the one-day itinerary for the first day, as it covers most of the highlights in Kobe city itself. The second day takes you out of the city proper and into the mountains.

Ideally, you’ll be staying overnight in Kobe or even Arima Onsen. Day 2 suggests visiting Arima Onsen in the morning and Mount Rokko in the afternoon, but you could easily swap these two locations if you’re planning on staying at a ryokan in the hot spring town.

For some suggested accommodation, see the Kobe Hotels and Kobe Ryokan pages pages.

We suggest following the one-day itinerary above.

Begin at one of the stations above, depending on where you’re staying or which train line you’ve used to travel to Kobe. From here, make your way to the next destination. There is a direct bus from Sannomiya Station to Arima Onsen which takes just 30 minutes, though this requires advance booking.

Hot springs in Arima Onsen

9:30am Explore Arima Onsen

Arima Onsen is a small hot spring town on the other side of the Rokko mountain range. It’s fairly compact and is a very pleasant little place to explore, especially during autumn. Wander along the narrow, winding streets, including the sloping Yumotozaka lined with restaurants and souvenir and craft shops. Stop by the little shrines and temples sequestered here and there: Tosen Shrine, Arima Inari Shrine, and Onsen-ji Temple. Entertain your kids at the Arima Toys and Automata Museum. Those yearning for a dose of nature should head to Tsuzumigataki Park for a look at its gorgeous waterfall, and Zuihoji Park when the fall foliage is out.

11:00am Soak in a hot spring bath

The main point of visiting an onsen town is, of course, to enjoy the hot springs. Arima Onsen has a number of public baths for day trippers. Kin no Yu and Gin no Yu are the town’s most famous baths, with ‘gold’ and ‘silver’ water respectively. The ‘golden springs’ are really iron-rich, reddish brown waters, and are supposed to help with skin problems as well as muscle and joint aches. The ‘silver springs,’ on the other hand, are rich in carbonated acid and radium – good for improving your blood circulation and overall immunity.

12:15pm Lunch in Arima Onsen

You might already have snacked your way through town – there’s Takenaka’s deep-fried minced beef cutlets, rich homemade gelato at Stagione, and cakes and sweets at Cafe de Beau. But if you’ve managed to resist the temptation so far, now’s the time to eat a square meal.

Arima Onsen is short on dinner options as most visitors staying in the evening will eat at their hotel or inn; but it does have many lunch options in town. We like the soba noodles at Dosanjin in Arima Onsen, the organic food at Doukatei, and the casual set lunches at Cafe Tchic Tac.

Child statue at Nunobiki

1:15pm Mount Rokko

To get here from Arima Onsen, take the Rokko-Arima Ropeway up to Mount Rokko. You’ll be able to enjoy panoramic views of Kobe and Osaka from the top. It’s pleasant wandering around this area: you can visit the Alpine Rokko Botanical Garden, check out the Rokko Pastures and its various animal-related activities, and chill out at the Rokko Garden Terrace.

Time permitting, we also recommend visiting the Nunobiki Herb Garden. It’s utterly glorious when it’s in full bloom – walking among a lush profusion of fragrant herbs and flowers is nothing to be sniffed at! The tropical greenhouse is also a must-visit for plant-lovers. Finish your visit here by soaking your feet in the herbal footpath.

The easiest way to get to the Nunobiki Herb Garden is from Shin-Kobe Station. If you’re on Mount Rokko, you’ll need to take the ropeway down, and then a bus or train to Shin-Kobe for the ropeway up to the garden.

Afterwards, you may wish to hike back to Shin-Kobe Station instead of taking the cable car down. Not only will this provide you with lovely views of the city, it’ll take you past some of the waterfalls. Who doesn’t like chasing waterfalls on a hike?

5:00pm Head back to central Kobe

Return to the city for a break at your hotel.

Kobe has many good restaurants for dinner. Check out our Places to Eat in Kobe page for some suggestions. Alternatively, you might choose to stay at an inn in Arima Onsen this evening and have a multi-course kaiseki dinner included with your stay.

Just 30 minutes by train from Kobe port to Osaka, travelers can hop on Kobe shore excursions to visit many cultural cities including Osaka, Himeji, Nara, and especially the former capital Kyoto. Same as the rest of Japan, the best time to visit Kobe and cities nearby is in spring and autumn. The perfect weather during this time with mild temperature and lack of rain help creating fantastic experiences. On the other hand, Kobe is hot and humid during summer, and coldly covered with snow in winter.

Take a first step to the city, you can see an iconic landmark, 108-meter high Kobe Port Tower. Kobe (_, Kōbe) is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and one of Japan's ten largest cities . Located between the sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is also considered one of Japan's most attractive cities.

Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries. Its port was among the first to be opened to foreign trade in the 19th century alongside the ports of Yokohama , Nagasaki , Hakodate and Niigata.

In 1995, Kobe was hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake , which killed over 5000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. Today the city is completely rebuilt, and few signs of the terrible event remain.

KOBE DAY TOUR FROM OSAKA: A DIY Itinerary

KOBE DAY TOUR FROM OSAKA: A DIY Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

“Why do you keep going back to Osaka?”

It’s a question we always get from our friends and followers, but it’s also one that is very easy to answer. Osaka isn’t just a destination on its own, it is also a gateway to other cities and prefectures!

Osaka is the largest city in the Kansai Region. It is also located at the very heart of it, making it an ideal jump off base for travelers who wish to see many other spots on this side of Japan. Most importantly, with the exception of Tokyo, it is also the most well-connected city, boasting an intricate network of railways and bus routes that stem to even some of the most remote corners of the region.

One of the destinations you can easily visit from Osaka is Kobe . The capital of Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe is the sixth largest city in Japan and has always been one of the most important port cities in the country. In this post, we’ll explore Kobe and discover the things that you can enjoy in a day with information on how to get there if you’re staying in Osaka.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

The Passes You Need for this Osaka-Kobe Trip

Transportation companies in Kansai are very competitive, especially in enticing foreign tourists to use their service. You’ll be surprised how many transportation passes are available out there! Just looking at the number of train passes alone can induce choice paralysis.

But don’t worry, we already identified the passes you will need for this trip: Hanshin Tourist Pass and Rokkosan Tourist Pass .

Hanshin Tourist Pass

The Hanshin Tourist Pass will give you unlimited access to the Hanshin Main Line, which connects Osaka and Kobe, and all other Hanshin and Kobe Kosoku lines. The card is valid for one day. It is operated by Hanshin Electric Railway Co., Ltd., commonly referred to as simply Hanshin.

The pass normally costs ¥700. But is an ongoing promo and you can avail of it for only ¥500. Imagine: unlimited access for only ¥500!

kobe day tours

Using it is very simple too. All you need to do is insert the card into the designated slot. No need to fall in line over and over again. This means that you get to save both time and money. Don’t forget to pick it up on the other side!

The pass is available at these locations:

  • Kansai Tourist Information Center at the Arrival Hall of Kansai Airport
  • Hankyu Tourist Center – Osaka Umeda
  • BIC Camera Namba and Abeno Q’s Mall

Hotel Hanshin Osaka

  • Hotel New Hankyu Osaka
  • Hanshin Koku Travel Salon

You can also book in advance online via Klook!

kobe day tours

Rokkosan Tourist Pass

One of the major attractions in this itinerary is Mt. Rokko . It takes multiple transfers to get there so having the Rokkosan Tourist Pass can give you more savings and convenience. This pass isn’t unlimited but it covers the entire journey from select train stations in Kobe to Mt. Rokko Mountaintop Tourism Area and back.

kobe day tours

With this pass, you can use the following:

  • Kobe City Bus 16 and 106
  • Rokko Cable Car
  • Rokko Sanjo Bus (unlimited rides)

The pass has five tickets attached to it. Each time you’re disembarking, you must tear the ticket off and hand it to the driver.

The pass costs ¥1000. You can also book online via Klook!

How to Get from Osaka to Kobe

If you’re staying in Umeda area, start your trip at the Hanshin-Umeda Station (HS 01) , the start point and terminus of Hanshin Main Line. This is an underground station next to Hanshin Department Store.

kobe day tours

There is an information center at the station, so if you have questions, you can just ask away. There are also a lot of free brochures available to aid you with your navigation or give you recommendation.

From here, your first stop is Uozaki Station (HS 23) in Kobe.

Travel time: 22 minutes if you take Limited Express train or 52 minutes if you take the local train Fare: FREE with pass. ¥280 without the pass.

Places to Visit in Kobe

Sake factories and museums.

Nearest Station: Uozaki (HS 23, Hanshin Main Line)

Welcome to Kobe’s Nada District , one of the largest producers of sake in Japan!

Sake is often called Japanese rice wine. But in Japan, the term used is nihonshu because sake in the vernacular refers to any type of alcoholic drink. Sake is a curious drink. It’s called rice wine but it looks like a distilled drink and the process of creating it is closer to beer brewing. However, the complex flavor profiles, alcohol content, and how people usually appreciate it are very wine-like.

Kobe’s Nada District is home to several sake breweries because it has all the elements that are needed to create top-quality sake: plenty supply of rice, clean freshwater, and the right weather conditions. We were able to visit two breweries and museums in the area: Kikumasamune Sake Museum and Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum.

Both can be visited FREE of charge. Both showcase the journey of rice from harvest to fermentation through various displays. You can use your phone to capture a QR code and use it as guide as you explore. The guides are also available in multiple languages. Hakutsuru even has a Tagalog option! Both will also allow you to sample different types of sake after the tour.

kobe day tours

You can choose just one sake brewery for this itinerary. Both are very good, presenting the whole process in a way that is easy to understand.

Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum Hours open: 9:30am to 4:00pm Entrance Fee: FREE

Kikumasamune Sake Museum Hours open: 9:30am to 4:00pm Entrance Fee: FREE

Rokko Snow Park (Mt. Rokko)

From either sake museum, trace your steps back to Uozaki Station and take the Hanshin Main Line again to Hanshin Mikage Station (HS25) using your Hanshin Tourist Pass.

Travel time: 2 minutes Fare: ¥140 without the pass, FREE with Hanshin Tourist Pass

Here’s how to get to Rokko Snow Park from this point:

  • At Hanshin Mikage Station, take the Kobe City Bus 16 that will take you to Rokko Cable Shita Station. You’ll need to use the green stub of your pass and give it to the driver before you alight. Travel time: 15-30 minutes. Fare: ¥210 without the pass, FREE with the pass.
  • At the Rokko Cable Shita Station, take the Rokko Cable Car which will take you up to Rokko Cable Sanjo Station. You will need to show the blue ticket to the staff before boarding. Fare: ¥590 without the pass, FREE with the pass. Travel time: 10 minutes.
  • Take the Rokko Sanjo Bus to Rokko Mountaintop Tourism Area. Don’t detach the red stub yet. You’ll do that after you make the return trip. Travel time: 9-13 minutes. Fare: ¥260 without the pass, FREE with the pass.
  • Alight at Rokko Snow Park. That’s it!

kobe day tours

Rokko Snow Park is just one of the many attractions atop Mt. Rokko! Others include Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden, Rokko International Musical Box, Museum, Rokko-Arima Ropeway, Rokko-Shidare Observatory and Tenran Observatory.

kobe day tours

We chose Rokko Snow Park because we were traveling in winter and Vins has never tried skiing before. It’s a great place to learn to ski because it’s not too big. It is also the closest snow park to Osaka.

This isn’t my first time skiing. Although I am still not very good at it (!!!), I already know the basics and can confidently ski down a slope without problem. Vins is another story, though. He’s tall and a complete beginner, so it took him quite a while to get the hang of it.

kobe day tours

Here are the rates:

  • Entrance fee: ¥2100 adult, ¥1050 child
  • Lift Fee: ¥150 per ride
  • Ski and snow gear rental: ¥4650 adult, ¥3600 child (includes skis, poles, boots, gloves, top and bottom garments)
  • Snow shoes rental (shoes only): ¥500

If you get hungry before or after your snow activity, drop by Restaurant Alpen Rose , which serves meals for as low as ¥750.

Once you think you’ve had enough, just trace your steps back to Hanshin Mikage Station and take the Hanshin Main Line Direct Express to Motomachi Station .

Travel time: 8-13 minutes. Fare: ¥190 without the pass, FREE with Hanshin Tourist Pass

From Motomachi Station, travel on foot to Kobe Harborland.

Kobe Harborland and Meriken Park

Nearest Hanshin Station: Motomachi (HS33)

Kobe Harborland is a seaside shopping and entertainment destination, peppered with several department stores including Umie.

kobe day tours

Umie is perhaps the most well-known of departments store in the district. Housing dozens of stores and restaurants, it is divided into three sections: North Mall, South Mall, and Mosaic. Of the three, Mosaic is the most scenic because it allows a fantastic view of the Meriken Park. If you can, wait until the evening and watch the harbor light up! Its most iconic structures like the Kobe Maritime Museum and the Kobe Port Tower look so much better at night.

kobe day tours

If you want, you can also make your way to Meriken Park. Otherwise, trace your steps back to Motomachi Station and make your way by Hanshin Main Line back to Osaka:

Travel time: 36 minutes Fare: ¥320 without the pass, FREE with the pass

Hanshin Umeda Main Department Store Snack Park

Nearest Station: Umeda (HS01)

DINNER TIME! Since you’re already at Hanshin Umeda Station, which is just beside Hanshin Umeda Main Department Store, you might want to check out their newly reopened Snack Park.

kobe day tours

Hanshin Snack Park has been a popular stand-up food court even among locals. It’s composed of over a dozen food kiosks serving a wide variety of Japanese delights including takoyaki, sushi, and ramen. Established in 1957, it was recently renovated to improve the overall dining experience.

Many of the original favorites are still here. Among the most popular is ikayaki , a crepe-like snack that is filled with bits of squid (¥152). You can also choose to have leeks and soy sauce added to it (¥162). We’ve tried both and they were delicious, especially given how cheap they are. I was expecting them to taste like takoyaki, but it was far from it. It’s like a slightly denser pancake but more savory than sweet. And the squid filling add a nice texture, something that made me keep on eating.

kobe day tours

In one corner stands a sushi bar, which takes pride in their fresh seafood toppings including tuna, salmon, salmon roe, scallops, crab, and mackerel. The most expensive item on their menu is o-toro, choicest raw fatty tuna belly, and uni, sea urchin (¥432 a piece). Others range from ¥162 to ¥648 for 2 pieces.

But the best thing we tried that night was the ramen served by the stall named Kadoya Shokudo . They serve traditional ramen, with shoyu broth and Chinese noodles. Although my palate favors rich, bold flavors, I was pleasantly surprised by its light broth, which had the perfect mix of saltiness and umami. The noodles were more on the thin, soft side.

kobe day tours

If you still have more time, walk a little bit and you’ll find…

HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel

Nearest Station: Umeda (HS01) Admission Fee: ¥600 Hours open: 11:00am to 10:45pm

Just a few minutes from Hanshin Department Store is HEP FIVE , another mall bursting with shops that target mostly the younger market. But it’s best known for its 106-meter bright red Ferris Wheel that allow a wonderful view of Umeda and the greater Osaka area especially at night! You can also see Osaka Harbor from here.

Sample Kobe Itinerary with Breakdown of Expenses

Here’s a brief summary of the above itinerary. I’m not indicating the exact time to give you some wiggle room in case you want to stay longer at a stop.

I also included a budget breakdown. Note that this assumes you have a Hanshin Tourist Pass and a Rokkosan Tourist Pass!

  • Transit: Take Hanshin Main Line from Hanshin Umeda Station to Uozaki Station.
  • Explore: Sake Brewery Museum (choice between Kikumasamune Sake Museum and Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum). Entrance Fee: FREE
  • Transit: Take Hanshin Main Line from Uozaki Station to Hanshin Mikage Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Kobe City Bus 16 from Hanshin Mikage Station to Rokko Cable Shita Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Rokko Cable Car to Rokko Cable Sanjo Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Rokko Sanjo Bus to Rokko Snow Park. FREE.
  • Enjoy: Rokko Snow Park. Entrance Fee: ¥2100
  • Lunch: Restaurant Alpen Rose. Budget: ¥1200
  • Enjoy: Snow Activities
  • Transit: Take Rokko Sanjo Bus to Rokko Cable Sanjo Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Rokko Cable Car to Rokko Cable Shita Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Kobe City Bus 16 to Hanshin Mikage Station. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Hanshin Main Line to Motomachi Station. FREE.
  • Explore: Kobe Harborland. FREE.
  • Transit: Take Hanshin Main Line to Hanshin Umeda Station. FREE.
  • Dinner: Hanshin Department Store Snack Park. Budget: ¥1500.
  • Enjoy: HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel. Admission Fee: ¥600.

If you’re skiing at Rokko Snow Park for a few hours, the above itinerary will cost you around ¥14,000 (PH6715, USD128, SGD173) per person, excluding airfare, accommodations, visa fees, travel taxes, and shopping budget. Note that the bulk of this budget goes to ski rental.

If you’re visiting Rokko Snow Park just for sightseeing or you just want to play with the sled, the above itinerary will set you back around ¥8000 (PHP3835, USD73, SGD99) per person, excluding airfare, accommodations, visa fees, travel taxes, and shopping budget.

Notice that you only spent ¥1500 (¥1700 outside promo period) on transportation. That’s ¥1000 on Rokkosan Tourist Pass and ¥500 (¥700 outside promo period) on Hanshin Tourist Pass.

If you don’t have these two passes, you will be spending a total of ¥3050 on transportation. But if you have the passes, you’ll be racking up a total of ¥1550 in savings!

Where to Stay in Osaka

The above itinerary assumes you’re staying near Umeda or any Hanshin Main Line Station. The area surrounding Umeda Station is an ideal place to stay in Osaka because of the sheer number of attractions and dining places. Umeda is home to some of the city’s most recognizable attractions including the HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel and Umeda Sky Building.

Just one station away from Umeda Station is Fukushima Station which is also surrounded by lots of accommodation choices. The area is also littered with restaurants especially ramen bars and yakiniku that are favorites among locals. It is also within walking distance of Osaka Station. Fukushima Station is part of the Hanshin Main Line, which means it is also covered by the Hanshin Tourist Pass.

Here are two properties you might want to consider. Both properties are also very accessible from Kansai Airport. You can take a Hanshin Limousine Bus to Osaka Station (Herbis Osaka) and just walk a little bit from the bus stop.

First Cabin Hanshin Nishiumeda

First Cabin is a popular chain of capsule hotels. At its core, it is a capsule hotel but is done in a more sophisticated fashion. The interiors are stylish, slick, and impeccably neat. It is designed in a way that mimics a luxury aircraft, with business-class and first-class capsules. An overnight stay costs ¥4000 to ¥6000, depending on the season. You can also stay for only a few hours if that’s all you need.

We were able to check out their Hanshin Nishiumeda branch located close to Osaka Station and Fukushima Station.

Here are some of the photos we took during our stay.

kobe day tours

If you have a bigger budget, Hotel Hanshin Osaka is also an option. It takes pride in having natural hot spring in each room, ensuring that you have a relaxing time during your stay. They also have spa facilities if you want to level up your unwinding. The best part, you have an awesome view of the city, with the Umeda Sky Building taking center stage. Here are some photos!

Hi! Very informative post as usual! I’m going to Japan this April, and will be staying in Kobe, Hyogo. My itinerary includes trips to Osaka, Kyoto and Nara. Will be there for almost 9 days (I arrive at KIX at night). What pass do you suggest? TIA!

Yosh Dimen

Will you touring every single day of those nine days? Kasi baka you don’t need a single pass for the entire trip but instead do it one day at a time. This way, if you decide na mag-rest day, di ka mape-pressure.

For example, when exploring Osaka from Kobe, you can use a combination of Hanshin Tourist Pass and Osaka Amazing Pass.

For Kyoto, try Hankyu Tourist Pass.

For Nara, combination of Hanshin Tourist Pass and Kintetsu 1 Day Pass. Or if Nara Park lang ang pupuntahan mo sa Nara, just use Hanshin Tourist Pass to get to Osaka (and back) and then regular tickets na lang.

For Himeji, Himeji Tourist Pass.

Grace

Hi! May I ask, hindi po ba pwede gamitin yung Kansai thru pass to get from Osaka to Kobe? Kobe is included in the areas covered, so I was wondering kung di sya magagamit to get to Kobe>. Iba pa po ba yung Hanshin Tourist Pass? Thank you! :)

Hi Grace, pwede mo magamit ung Kansai Thru Pass sa Hanshin line. If meron kang KTP, di mo na need nitong Hanshin Pass.

Luna

Thank you for this post! I’ve been to Osaka, Kyoto and Nara several times before and your post made me decide to go for a day trip to Kobe as well! I love how your post is very informative yet straight to the point, especially for someone who don’t wish to take a package tour (which is expensive and includes other activities that I’m not keen). It’s really useful for people who wish to craft their own day trip itinerary.

Now I’m looking forward to add Kobe to my list of places I’ve been to in Japan!

Thank you so much! Enjoy Kobe! :)

Ryan

Hi! For the Rokko Snow Park, did you book it thru klook ( https://www.klook.com/en-PH/activity/2599-rokko-snow-park-osaka/ ) or did you just walk in? Also, how many hours did you spend in the snow park?

These Are The Best Day Trips From Kobe, Japan

From visiting some of japan’s most impressive castles, to enjoying a traditional onsen experience, enjoying the buzz of one of japan’s most vibrant cities, to taking in one of the most breath-taking views of the region, these are the best day trips from kobe..

So Kobe was a blast! As you’ll have seen from my recent blog 18 Amazing Things To Do In Kobe , I packed absolutely loads into my trip. I explored Chinatown, took a sunset cruise, learned all about Kobe port, sampled sake and feasted on Kobe beef. It’s a really interesting city, with plenty of great things to do, and I really enjoyed having time to explore it.

Along with a few days in Kobe, I also used the city as a base to explore some other amazing spots in Japan.

Watch the video, then scroll down to find out about some of my top tips for for day trips from Kobe.

How To Travel Around Japan By Train

Many of you messaged asking if Japan is hard to navigate, especially with the language barrier. In general I’d say no. The train networks in Japan are some of the most efficient I’ve ever experienced. Services run bang on time, are regular and comfortable too. Many have WiFi, which is a bonus, especially when you’re planning where you need to go next!

More and more signage is in English too, especially with key events like the Rugby World Cup 2019 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 bringing in more English-speaking tourists.

For smaller services, you can buy tickets at machines (yep the machines are in Japanese and English), and pay with cash. If you’re doing lots of bigger journeys, consider getting a JR pass, which you can use on most trains across Japan.

Kobe has a few major stations – Sannomiya and Shin-Kobe. In general we used Sannomiya , but Shin-Kobe is where the high-speed shinkansen trains pass through.

If you’re travelling to Japan for the first time, I’d recommend reading my Myth Busting Japan Guide – it’ll help you avoid any awkward situations!

Best Day Trips From Kobe

So now you’ve worked out how to travel around, where would I recommend you go on a day trip from Kobe?

Day Trip From Kobe To Arima Onsen

One of Japan’s most famous onsen towns, Arima Onsen is on the other side of Mount Rokko, set in beautiful mountain landscapes. It’s close to both Kobe and Osaka, which makes it a popular day trip for locals and tourists.

Arima Onsen, Japan - a great day trip from Kobe

While there are plenty of modern hotels in the town, there’s a quaint, old feel to the main street, with its wood-clad buildings and traditional stores. If you’re not familiar with onsens, they’re Japanese hot springs. There are a few steamy sources in the town itself, one of which is a foot bath at the bottom of the main street.

Arima Onsen, Japan

Being one of the oldest hot spring resorts in Japan, there are plenty of hot springs hotels, where you can enjoy the traditional Japanese onsen experience. Submerging yourself in the thermal waters is so relaxing, and it’s no wonder people travel to Arima Onsen to enjoy this experience!

Oh and you may be surprised when you see some of the thermal waters! Along with clear water, there’s a rusty brown/red water (you won’t be able to see your feet once you’re in!) It’s all natural, getting its colour from iron and minerals. The waters in Arima Onsen are known for their healing properties, so hopefully you’ll come out feeling relaxed and soothed!

After my last trip to Japan, I wrote this guide to visiting an onsen , and the etiquette associated with it. Definitely have a read before your trip, as you’ll probably feel a bit nervous before your first onsen!

We visited Hyoe Koyokaku in Arima Onsen and spent a few hours enjoying the relaxed ambience, thermal waters and a traditional bento box for lunch. There are several hot springs pools, including private onsen and outdoor pools.

Private onsen at Hyoe Koyokaku, Arima Onsen, Japan

The hotel itself has a mix of Western and Japanese rooms, and the food is very traditional. Our lunchtime bento boxes included tuna sashimi, octopus, fried beef, rice, miso soup, and a few unknown items covered in fish roe or with very fishy flavours!

Price to travel from Kobe to Arima Onsen: ¥930 (£6.50)

Day Trip From Kobe To Himeji

The main reason to visit Himeji is to see the incredible castle. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, over 400 years old, and considered one of Japan’s 12 original castles.

The castle is beautiful, painted in white with ornate rooftops and plenty of intricate details. There are big gates, meandering paths and courtyards along the way.

Himeji Castle, Japan

The main castle building is absolutely enormous – spanning seven floors with a huge base wall. It’s really impressive, and I’ve never felt smaller than when I stood at the bottom of it and looked up!

You can go inside the main keep, and once you’ve swapped your shoes for special slippers, you can start climbing the narrow staircases to reach the higher floors. There wasn’t much to see on the inside, but the views from the windows got more impressive as we ascended.

If you’re lucky enough to visit Himeji Castle during cherry blossom season, then you’re in for a HUGE treat! There are lots of cherry trees (which were stark and bare on my visit in January) that blossom metres away from the castle. The photos I’ve seen look spectacular!

Exploring Himeji Castle, Japan

Around five minutes from Himeji Castle is a large park, with a beautiful lake, Japanese bridges, fish and a waterfall. Within this area is Kassuiken Restaurant , a very reasonable eatery serving up local delicacies. I went for the conger eel set meal, having never tried it before – surprisingly delicious!

Day Trip From Kobe to Mount Rokko

If you love the great outdoors and good views, then take advantage of Kobe’s magical setting with the Rokko mountain range behind.

At 931m, the highest point is Mount Rokko itself. From Kobe, you can take trains, funiculars and cable cars up to the top. I’d say the simplest way from Kobe is to catch the retro green funicular (Rokko cable car) up to the top.

Moments from there is Tenran Café – a great little find, with cosy log fires in winter and a huge terrace with spectacular views of the city in the summer. We visited around 5pm, and I loved watching the sunset over Osaka and Kobe, followed by breathtaking night views as the twinkly lights turned on in both cities.

Sunset from the terrace at Tenran Cafe, Mount Rokko

From the café, there’s a circular bus line that will take you to the other key spots, including Mount Rokko Snow Park, the intriguing architecture of Rokko Shidare Observatory and the observation deck at Rokko Garden Terrace.

Views from Rokko Garden Terrace, Mount Rokko - a great day trip from Kobe

I was amazed by the view of the Kansai region from all of these spots, especially how you can see both Kobe and Osaka – two metropolises for the price of one! I’d definitely recommend visiting the observatory, an architectural wonder that has been cleverly constructed to circulate air.

KOBE TO MOUNT ROKKO

Distance from Kobe to Mount Rokko: Around 20km

Journey time from Kobe to Mount Rokko: Depends on your route, but probably around 1 hour from Kobe city centre.

Route from Kobe to Mount Rokko: Several options, but this is one route – Train from Sannomiya Station – Rokkomichi Station. Bus to Tsurukabuto 4-chome Bus Stop. Then Rokko Cable Car to the top.

Price to travel from Kobe to Mount Rokko: ¥960 (£6.70)

Day Trip From Kobe to Osaka

If you only have one day trip to squeeze in from Kobe, I’d say you should visit Osaka. Japan’s third largest city, Osaka is a vibrant and buzzy, with a great mix of culture, food and entertainment. I’d spent a bit of time there on my last trip to Japan, but I didn’t do any of the major touristy things!

We started our day at Osaka Castle – a must-see if you’re visiting the city. The site has had its fair share of dark times, including troops attacking it and being struck by lightning. The current building dates back to 1931, and surprisingly it survived the WWII air raids that hit areas very close by.

Osaka Castle with Osaka city skyline, Japan

It was wonderful to take in the views of the castle, and hop on a boat around the moat too. There were lots of great photo spots along the way.

Osaka Castle, Japan

While in the grounds of Osaka Castle we took part in the Samurai Experience. We got dressed up in samurai outfit and a kimono, then learned some samurai moves. It was a lot of fun and definitely one of the more memorable moments from my trip.

Osaka Samurai Experience -1

Next up was a trip to Dotonbori – Osaka’s liveliest neighbourhoods. With a canal running through the area, and enough neon lights to be seen from space, it was the kind of buzzy, colourful spot I LOVE!

Exploring Dotonbori, Osaka

Walking around the streets of Dotonbori is SO entertaining. Huge animatronic crabs sit on shop fronts, people cook takoyaki (octopus dumplings) on the street, flipping them in the most mesmerising of ways, and the lights, smells and sounds surprise you as you wander. There’s a huge energy to this area – it’s totally infectious.

Dotonbori, Osaka

If you’re looking for gifts to take home, my big recommendation is to head to Sennichimae Doguyasuji Street. It’s THE place for buying amazing Japanese ceramics. On my first trip I bought 8 sushi dishes and several cups and bowls to take home! This time I bought my mum a beautiful sake set. Some of the stores are like treasure troves, so expect to pick through lots of items to find what you want, but it’s worth it. Items are very reasonably priced too.

Food wise, you’ll find everything in Osaka. Definitely try takoyaki if you haven’t had them before. The octopus dumplings are one of the top foods to eat in Japan and are a staple of Dotonbori.

Takoyaki in Dotonbori, Osaka

There are a lot of kushikatsu restaurants in Osaka too, which is essentially meat or veg, covered in breadcrumbs, deep-fried, then dunked in a tangy sauce. Personally, I don’t really rate it, and would 100% opt for sushi, ramen or another delicious Japanese dish!

Kyoto Private Tour from Kobe Overview

Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Kyoto with our private tour by car from Kobe, taking you to the must-see sites of Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari. Leave the hassle of public transit behind as you enjoy a scenic drive through Gion's heart, admiring the classic architecture and learning about its vibrant nightlife.

Arashiyama: Classic Kyoto at its Finest

Expect grand temples, serene gardens, lush bamboo groves, and traditional rickshaws as you explore the enchanting Arashiyama district. Begin your journey at the 14th-century Tenryuji temple and its even older, exquisitely designed Japanese garden. Soak in the serene atmosphere, learn about traditional garden elements, and continue to the famous bamboo grove that has captivated countless visitors.Next, venture into the lesser-known but equally stunning Okochi Sanso, a 1930s estate built by a renowned Japanese actor. Admire its beautiful gardens and expansive views of Kyoto, and indulge in a matcha tea break (included in the admission price). Avoid the crowds as you walk along the Hozu River, then explore the charming town shopping area, discovering unique Kyoto crafts and foods.

A Flavorful Lunch and Gion Exploration

Savor the distinct flavors of Kyoto's cuisine as your guide introduces you to local food options during lunch. Afterward, marvel at Gion's striking architecture, tree-lined streets, and picturesque canals by day, before continuing to Fushimi Inari.

Fushimi Inari: A Unique and Captivating Shinto Shrine

Experience the awe-inspiring Fushimi Inari shrine, Kyoto's most famous Shinto site. Thousands of red gates beckon you up the hillside while your guide's insights provide a deeper understanding of its history and significance. Tailor your experience with a lighthearted or informative narrative, ensuring an engaging visit.

Upgrade Your Kyoto Tour from Kobe

Our standard tour lasts eight hours, with around two and a half to three hours spent traveling between cities. Opt for the "Xtra Large" package to add two hours to your tour, allowing for more time to explore Kyoto's gems, such as Ryoanji, Kinkakuji, Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace, or the Nishiki food market. Share your preferences, and we'll create a memorable, customized experience.Any questions? Don’t hesitate to contact us.

Tenryuji is a great way to start our day in Kyoto. The temple has simplicity, beauty and functionality, and then there are the gorgeous gardens. We exit to the bamboo grove street. Altogether, about 45 minutes.

Still in the Arashiyama area, we next enter stately gates into Okochi Sanso, the historic estate of an early 20th century Japanese actor. Perfectly manicured, inviting grounds are dotted with noteworthy structure. We also take a break for some powdered green tea (matcha) here. We spend 45 minutes or so here.

A fifteen minute stroll down to the lovely and lazy Hozu River, then a continued walk alongside it leads us back into town. If you’re looking for Kyoto shopping suggestions, we’ve got them. We know some good lunch places too. If you’re not interested in the shops, we can easily breeze by that bit. About 75 minutes altogether for most, but this can vary.

Well-preserved storefronts line this actively used, historic part of the Gion district. There’s a nice stream running through the area we stop that makes for an even more atmospheric experience. About 15 minutes here.

Among the top things to do in Kyoto for a reason, our visit to Fushimi Inari will take you beyond the famous red gates and into parts less visited, or at least less explained. We get away from the crowds as we can, and let you in on stories and cultural points that will make your visit even more worthwhile. About 75 minutes here.

Consider making your day a couple hours longer with our “Xtra Large” package, available at time of booking. Please read more about some ideas we have for this time in the “Care to supersize your Kyoto tour from Kobe?” contained within the full tour description section above.

Historic and Cultural Landmarks

Taking a Kyoto tour from Kobe means going from a rather posh Western city heavily influenced by foreign trade to a city that has proudly not changed nearly as much over the past decades. Partly this is because there was no World War II bombing in Kyoto, but irregardless of that, Kyoto has always proudly stood on its own as a pristinely preserved area of impressive temples and shrines, and also landscapes that are equally impressive. Fushimi Inari, Tenryu-ji, the Gion, and other areas we wish to show you are all culturally rich and deeply historic.

We’ll pick you up at your lodging in Kobe, or at the port Kobe, making for an easy and convenient day trip to Kyoto.

Know Before You Go

  • Please come wearing comfortable shoes. It’s a car tour, but there’s still a good bit of walking to be done. If you wish to minimize the walking, please let us know (preferably in advance) and we’ll modify the itinerary to suit your needs.
  • Kyoto tends to be a bit chillier in winter and even a bit hotter in summer than Kobe due to its landlocked, higher elevation locale. Please come dressed for the day with this in mind. Leaving things in the car while we stroll about is always an option.
  • Enjoy all the exciting stops described above and more on this private vehicle tour! The plan described is a model course, and there is the possibility for change based on our guests’ interests. Timing and external factors (such as traffic conditions) may force deviations from this model course.
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off
  • All vehicle costs
  • All guide costs
  • Lunch, or any other food and drinks
  • Admissions (plans on 1500 yen per adult on the standard tour, and for primary school and younger, around half that)
  • Going “Xtra Large” allows for two more hours of touring.

USC Basketball: Trojans Honor Kobe Bryant On His Statue Unveiling Day

T oday is February 8, 2024, otherwise known as "Kobe Bryant" day. The legendary NBA player has left a legacy that is unmatched, and the USC Trojans know this all too well. USC is one of the many "Mamba" schools and one that receives unique and treasured equipment to carry on his legacy.

Earlier in the season,  USC Women's Basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb spoke of Kobe's legacy , which was on full display today at the Crypto.com arena, where his statue was unveiled to the world. To honor the legacy and inspiration that Kobe has left, the Trojans honored him with images of the many times he attended games at the Galen Center.

Kobe was very proud of supporting basketball in every facet and often attended games to usher in the next legacy of great basketball players.  His statue is now an immortalization of his ongoing dedication to the game .

USC Women's Basketball star freshman JuJu Watkins dropped 51 points the other night and admitted that she is always striving for the "Mamba Mentality." It would have been bittersweet if she had done so on Kobe Day, though she was close.

Kobe is clearly still inspiring fans worldwide, and the Trojans know just how important it is to honor the man who has paved the way for so many great players. Long live, Kobe.

USC downs No. 5 Arizona 78-65 behind 19 points each from DJ Rodman and Kobe Johnson

LOS ANGELES – With a rollercoaster regular season behind them, the Southern California Trojans are finally rolling in March — the way many thought they would all along.

DJ Rodman and Kobe Johnson scored 19 points each in a 78-65 victory over No. 5 Arizona on Saturday night, giving the Trojans their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Recommended Videos

“To be able to win this game at this time of year, especially with the season we had, I feel like this is exactly what we needed,” Johnson said. “This is the perfect boost to get us going into the Pac-12 tourney.”

The Wildcats (24-7, 15-5 Pac-12) clinched their 18th regular-season league title outright at UCLA on Thursday and had won 10 of 11 coming in.

But the Trojans (14-17, 8-12) stopped Arizona cold.

With leading scorer Boogie Ellis having an off night offensively, USC got big efforts from Johnson (six of USC's 15 steals), Rodman (seven rebounds) and freshman Isaiah Collier , who finished with 16 points and five assists. Ellis had only five points on 1-of-8 shooting.

“Beating Arizona is always fun,” Rodman said. “It feels good to be undefeated in March even though we’re just starting.”

Johnson hit a 3-pointer, Collier made a pair of free throws and Rodman scored on a tip-in for a 60-49 lead.

Buoyed by loud chants of "U of A! U of A!", the Wildcats answered with a 3-pointer from Keshad Johnson and a dunk by 7-foot Oumar Ballo to get within six. That was as close as they'd come the rest of the way.

USC's defense held Pac-12 player of the year candidate Caleb Love to a season-worst 2 points on 1-of-10 shooting. He missed all six of his 3-point attempts in only his second single-digit scoring effort of the season.

“We tried to pressure him, tried to make him take tough shots, which I think we did perfectly,” Kobe Johnson said. “We knew coming into it right away we needed to be the more physical team.”

Ballo and Keshad Johnson scored 17 points apiece for the Wildcats, who committed 18 turnovers that led to 17 points for the Trojans. Ballo had 10 rebounds.

The Trojans closed the game on an 11-6 run, limiting Arizona to just three field goals in the final three minutes. Collier had the crowd in a tizzy with a one-handed jam and Joshua Morgan followed with a slam of his own. USC made 16 of 18 free throws overall.

USC ended a six-game skid against the Wildcats, who beat the Trojans 82-67 in Tucson in January. It was third-year Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd's first loss to USC in six games.

“It shows we can compete with anybody,” Johnson said.

Rodman added, “We can beat anyone."

Neither team led by more than five in the first half, which ended with Bronny James dribbling the clock down and hitting a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining for a 34-30 lead. He later had a steal and a slam dunk. His father, LeBron James, took it in from a courtside seat. The younger James had five points and six rebounds in 19 minutes.

“This is the best he’s played in a while. He got two rebounds above the rim,” coach Andy Enfield said. “We don’t win this game without our bench coming in and giving us great minutes.”

BIG PICTURE

Arizona: The Wildcats are looking to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and make a deep run behind a strong senior contingent that includes North Carolina transfer Love, Ballo, San Diego State transfer Johnson and Pelle Larsson.

USC: After a school-record four consecutive 20-win seasons, the Trojans fell off the cliff. They have regained some momentum along a rocky road that included a six-game skid in January and early February. They'll lose fifth-year stalwart Ellis, graduate transfer Rodman and senior Morgan. It's possible Collier and James could decide to leave early.

Arizona: The Wildcats are the top seed for the Pac-12 Tournament next week in Las Vegas and will play a quarterfinal game Thursday.

USC: The Trojans will play a first-round game in the Pac-12 tourney Wednesday.
