Kehlani’s Journey of Healing

On “Blue Water Road,” the singer infuses confessional lyrics with newfound emotional clarity.

kehlani tour wiki

By Isabelia Herrera

There’s a simple but powerful promise in “Little Story,” the orchestral epic that opens Kehlani ’s new album, “Blue Water Road” — one that captures what it feels like to spend a lifetime chasing safe, tender intimacy in partnership: “Working on being softer/’Cause you are a dream, to me.”

The phrase evokes one of the foundations of Kehlani’s music: a commitment to openness and fearless vulnerability in the face of romantic turmoil. Kehlani, who uses she/they pronouns, has always been confessional, a quality that has resonated with a generation of pop and R&B fans and that can be felt on the singer’s last two albums (and mixtapes). This time around, the insecurities of love and heartbreak are still there, but there’s a newfound awareness — an emotional clarity that illuminates how healing isn’t always linear.

All this wisdom didn’t just materialize out of thin air. In the past two years, Kehlani has experienced several life-altering shifts: settling into motherhood; losing two close friends to drug overdoses; enduring a brutal public breakup with the rapper YG; and coming out as a lesbian and as nonbinary. Many of these themes appeared on the 2020 album “It Was Good Until It Wasn’t,” and some of them are reprised here, but that project was cloudy and macabre, driven by sparse, hollow beats and a somber outlook on the prospect of building healthy love.

“Blue Water Road” instead radiates delicate warmth. In a creamy, full-throated voice, Kehlani exudes a tenderness not felt since their 2017 studio album, “SweetSexySavage.” There’s still a reverence for the past: “Up at Night,” featuring Justin Bieber, interpolates Soul II Soul and Rose Windross’s 1989 track “Fairplay,” while “Wish I Never” warps the drums of Slick Rick’s classic “Children’s Story.” But there’s a fresh, imagistic aura to the production on “Blue Water Road,” rendered in part by the executive producer Andrew “Pop” Wansel. Nearly every song includes hushed acoustic guitar textures, or swelling string crescendos that revel in high drama. Echoes of wind, cresting waves and bird calls are sprinkled throughout, sketching an aural landscape that is plush and comforting, like the caress of a lover who’s been gone for too long.

This is the ideal backdrop for Kehlani’s diaristic, bleeding-heart lyricism. “Little Story” harnesses a novelistic metaphor to chronicle a romance that never fully bloomed: “I want you to pick up the pen/And write me into your story,” Kehlani sings. The lead single “Altar” is a gorgeous elegy for friends lost to addiction, and the ancestors who have offered Kehlani spiritual grounding. But rather than becoming immersed in sorrow, Kehlani salutes the dearly departed with a small act of service, and reminds us their memories will never really fade: “If I set a flame and I call your name/I’ll fix you a plate, we can go to dinner/We can share a meal your way/And I’ll play the songs that you used to play.”

But it’s Kehlani’s candid ruminations on queer desire and estrangement that resonate the deepest here. On the breathy slow burner “Get Me Started,” Kehlani and the R&B artist Syd lament a disconnection that threatens to end a relationship: “You need something else/Well, maybe she can do it better.” On the velvety serenade “Melt,” Kehlani cherishes the small, perfect joy of finding a home in a lover: “Wish I could build me a cute apartment/One bedroom right where your heart is.” It’s sensual but loving, capturing both the devoted affection and the erotic pleasure that make a partnership feel full.

Serenity, personal growth and felicity may not be seductive topics for a contemporary R&B record. But other artists might let these motifs land with mawkish sentimentality. For Kehlani, the path to healing isn’t a straightforward journey with a beginning, middle and end, where life can finally begin after reaching some abstract, enlightened state. “Blue Water Road” is a reminder that healing is open, unfinished and everlasting.

kehlani tour wiki

Blue Water Road , a collection of mostly R&B and orchestral pop songs with spiritual, sexy, and emotional overtones that debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in May 2022, marks a new chapter in Kehlani’s career. Kehlani’s third studio album, which features guest appearances from Blxst, Justin Bieber, Syd, Jessie Reyez, Ambré, and Thundercat, was created from songs that were originally intended to be bonus songs for the deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed 2020 album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The album also represents a metaphorical journey in the artist’s mind to new places.

Following performances in Atlanta, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and other cities around North America, Kehlani will conclude their North American leg in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, October 21st at Waikiki Shell. The tour is in support of their most recent album. After that, they will go to Europe, where the second part of their tour will begin on November 17 in Copenhagen, Denmark. From there, they will stop in Stockholm, Berlin, Paris, London, and other cities before wrapping up their trip on December 12 at Manchester, UK’s Victoria Warehouse.

Kehlani Live in Concert

Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born in Oakland, California, in 1995. During their teenage years, they practiced ballet and modern dance while attending the Oakland School for the Arts. In 2011, Kehlani got their first taste of fame as a member of the teen pop group Poplyfe. When Kehlani was just 14, Poplyfe achieved fourth place in the sixth season of "America's Got Talent." However, they got their mainstream break when America's Got Talent host Nick Cannon took an interest in their career. Cannon invested in Kehlani's first commercial mixtape, Cloud 19, which was released in 2014. After Cloud 19 was named one of Complex's 50 Best Albums of 2014, Kehlani released their second commercial mixtape in 2015, titled You Should Be Here . The mixtape featured Chance the Rapper and American singer BJ the Chicago Kid and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The You Should Be Here tour sold out every North American date, and Kehlani was nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Kehlani released their debut studio album in 2017 titled SweetSexySavage , and in 2018 opened for Demi Lovato's Tell Me You Love Me World Tour and Halsey's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour. After releasing their third commercial mixtape, While We Wait, in 2019 and a second studio album, It Was Good Until It Wasn't , in 2020. Kehlani brings fans a much-anticipated headlining tour in 2022 for their third studio album Blue Water Road.

Kehlani blue water road: oakland arena.

Got floor tickets for this show because Kehlani is my favorite artist. I had met her a few months prior during her album signing release in Berkeley, CA. Being in her presence felt life changing especially since she has inspired me and her music enlightens me. She is a force and radiates her energy amongst the crowd. She makes music for the people and I think that’s something everyone should have the privilege of witnessing. 🤍

Detroit Show

Last summer, one of my best friends and I saw Kehlani in concert and let me tell you --- one of the best experiences of my life. The choreography, the vocals, the energy, the vibes --- everything was on point. AND everything was perfectly on time, which I've never seen. I would highly recommend going to see her if you have the chance. You will not be disappointed!

I actually lost count of how many times I’ve seen Kehlani. It’s always a good time watching Kehlani perform. Whether Kehlani is performing her biggest hits or or hidden gems she’s amazing. It’s also nice to see someone whose microphone is on! If you get the chance go and see Kehlani!

been going here since i was a kid… always a fun time <333

her performances are amazing, seen her in richmond for her first tour & in DC for her second tour. only downside are the GA tickets that come with VIP, wish she was in venues where we get assigned seating. makes it easier for those to move to & from your seats, still giving her 5 stars bc that doesnt affect her performances & shes just an upstanding artist

She screwed us over big time…. Ended concert abruptly with no real reason.

Saw her twice that’s been in D.C she never disappoints

She is FINE!!!

Love the energy.. show was nice! WAS NOT EXPECTING FOR THE SHOW TO END SO QUICK SMH

Awesome performance! but sound issues

I’ve been to the Anthem and concerts in general numerous times but it was so loud (ik it sounds stupid but hear me out). So the opener was great and the volume is about what you’d expect and my friend and I had a blast. However, when Kehlani came on it’s like the volume was blasting, it was so loud that I couldn’t even make out anything and our ears were ringing. It was a significant jump in volume from the opener to her and my friend and I ended up leaving because even ear plugs didn’t help us out. This is in no way to blame the performers though, but it was really hard to enjoy her songs with how deafening the volume was. I want to clarify that I have been to concerts before too and we even saw her the last time she came for her Blue Water Road tour, but for some reason it was so loud that we couldn’t even make out what songs she was singing. Regardless, DJ Peewee and Kehlani still ate up the concert and gave a great performance

All I’ve Gotta Say Is Thank You

Every single Kehlani concert I’ve got to, they always put on an amazing show. I love them so much, and their talent, interactions, and just overall energy is unmatched. Tsunami Mob forever, so proud of Kehlani and her Team. Nothing but love for them always, thank you Kehlani and Ticketmaster.♡

Early Life [ ]

Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. She has described her ethnicity as a mix of "black, white, Native American, Filipino, and Spanish." Her father was African-American and her mother has been described as "mostly white, Spanish and Native American." She was adopted and raised by her aunt when her mother, who had a drug addiction, served time in prison. Kehlani's father, who also had a drug addiction, died when she was an infant. During her teenage years, she attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where she initially practiced dance, particularly ballet and modern dance.

Early in her life, Kehlani aspired to train as a dancer at the Juilliard School, but she had a knee injury in junior high, which led her to turn her attention towards singing. While living with her aunt, Kehlani was exposed almost exclusively to R&B and neo soul artists, such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, whom today she describes as some of her early musical influences. When she was 14, Kehlani was recruited to join a local pop cover band, PopLyfe.

Career beginnings with PopLyfe [ ]

Kehlani's singing career effectively began when she started out as a member and lead vocalist for the group called PopLyfe. The band's music was produced by former Tony! Toni! Toné! member, D'Wayne Wiggins. Within two years, the group performed throughout the Bay Area and other cities. In 2011, they auditioned for the sixth season of  America's Got Talent,  and eventually finished in fourth place. During their final appearance, judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani, " You've got real talent, but I don't think you need the group ."

After the end of  America's Got Talent , Kehlani left PopLyfe, because of several managerial and contractual disputes. Over six months, she avoided doing anything music related for fear of being sued by the group's management. In 2012 and 2013, Kehlani was effectively homeless, moving from house to house and often sleeping on couches. During her senior year of high school, she moved to Los Angeles, California with no legal guardian. In 2013, Nick Cannon, who had been the host of  America's Got Talent  during PopLyfe's run, called Kehlani to ask her about being in a rap group. She agreed at first and went to Los Angeles, but, ultimately didn't like the direction of the group and moved back to Oakland. To help with money and food, she decided to begin stealing items from grocery stores for a short time. Months later, Kehlani released her first solo track on SoundCloud, called "ANTISUMMERLUV". Cannon called her back after hearing the song and he set her up with an apartment in LA, along with studio time.

Cloud 19 ,  You Should Be Here , &  SweetSexySavage [ ]

In 2014, the studio time culminated in the release of her first mixtape, called  Cloud 19 . The mixtape features guest appearances from Kyle Dion. Cannon also sent her to New York City to work with record producer Jahaan Sweet. The mixtape ranked at twenty-eighth on Complex's list of the "50 Best Albums of 2014," and was also listed among  Pitchfork 's "Overlooked Mixtapes 2014." A song she released in late 2014, "Till the Morning" was placed by   Billboard  as one of the "Emerging Picks of the Week" on November 7, 2014. In 2015, Kehlani opened for American rapper G-Eazy on the second leg of his From the Bay to the Universe tour. On April 28, 2015, she released her second mixtape  You Should Be Here .  Billboard  called it the "year's first great R&B album", when it debuted at number 5 on the US  Billboard 's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The project features guest appearances from fellow American rapper Chance the Rapper, and American singer-songwriter BJ the Chicago Kid. A week after the release, she announced that she had signed a deal to Atlantic Records. In support of the Mixtape, she went on the You Should Be Here tour, which sold out every North American date and select European dates. Throughout 2015, she also received individual plaudits:  Complex  called her one of the "15 Artists to Watch Out for in 2015" and  Rolling Stone  named her one of the "10 New Artists You Need to Know." She was also nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Kehlani collaborated with fellow singer-songwriter Zayn on the track, "Wrong" from his debut album  Mind of Mine , which was released on March 25, 2016. Her song " Gangsta " was featured on the soundtrack for the hit movie  Suicide Squad,  which gave her and her music some beneficial recognition, as it reached number 41 on the Hot 100. On November 26, 2016, she revealed the title of her debut album  SweetSexySavage , which was released on Atlantic Records on January 27, 2017. On December 5, 2017, Hip-hop artist Eminem revealed that Kehlani would be collaborating on the song " Nowhere Fast " for his ninth studio album  Revival . Kehlani's third annual Tsunami Christmas tour concluded in Santa Ana, California on December 18, 2017 .

Kehlani served as an opening act on  Demi Lovato 's Tell Me You Love Me World Tour in North America, which started on February 26, 2018 and concluded on April 2, 2018. She then opened on  Halsey 's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour in Oceania, which started on April 19, 2018. She was also featured on Cardi B song Ring which peaked at number 28 at the Hot 100 making her first top 40 on the chart.

Personal Life [ ]

In January 2016, it was confirmed that Kehlani was in a relationship with star NBA point guard for then the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kyrie Irving. In March 2016, Canadian musician PartyNextDoor posted a picture of Kehlani's hand on Instagram insinuating that they were together. This caused a media controversy across Twitter, in which abuse was tweeted against Kehlani in hundreds of thousands of posts. Irving tweeted that they had broken up before the incident, but this seemed to go unnoticed. The negative media attention caused Kehlani to attempt suicide. Kehlani took to social media to explain that she had not cheated on Irving.

“We don’t gotta take it slow/ I’ma hit the gas if you’re ready to go/ I wanna speed it, breathe into your clothes/ The way you touch my neck got me ready to fold,” she sings.

Kehlani caught up with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Thursday where she detailed her love for “Move Ya Body” when it came to sampling and how she wanted to create more cheerful music rather than the sorrowful tunes her fans cling to.

“Because those drums, when they drop, it’s so recognizable and everybody just loses it. It’s one of those things where it drops and everybody goes, ‘Woo,’ and bends their knees and puts their hands on their knees,” she explained.

“Coming out of this pandemic to global tragedy to global tragedy to global tragedy, I was like I’m not really in a space to make something that feels super jarring or super sad. I’m very outspoken about these things, but I want my art to provide some kind of life and fun. I wanna hear this outside and I wanna feel good.”

Kehlani still hasn’t revealed the title or release date of their anticipated LP. Her last LP Blue Water Road peaked at No. 13 on the  Billboard 200  and No. 8 on  Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums .

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 36-hole cut at the Masters is different than any other major championship. The 89-man field will be cut to the low 50 and ties after 36 holes is completed.

Thursday’s first round was suspended due to darkness after the start of play was delayed more than two hours by morning storms. The second round is expected to begin on schedule at 8 a.m., however.

The cut was first instituted in 1957, 23 years after the Masters began. The field was cut to the low 40 and ties from 1957-61, but the cut changed the next year with the institution of the 10-shot rule. From 1962-2012, the field was cut to the low 44 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader.

Over the following seven years, the 36-hole cut was expanded to the low 50 and ties, as well as anyone within 10 strokes of the leader. The 10-shot rule was done away with in 2020, however, and now the low 50 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes at the Masters.
