tourist travel pass madrid

The Madrid City Card is the official tourist card of Madrid. It is a card that provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy unique benefits and discounts at around 30 cultural and leisure attractions.

Issued by the City Council, this sightseeing pass also grants visitors unlimited access to the public transportation system for a specific number of days.

  • Plaza Mayor: Plaza Mayor, 27

  • Paseo del Prado: Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo, s/n
  • CentroCentro: Plaza de Cibeles, 1

The price of the card depends on the number of days you plan to use it.

Children under 11 years old receive a 50% discount on the price and children under 4 years old do not need the card to enjoy discounts or to travel on public transport for free.

You can start using your Madrid City Card for discounts and benefits as soon as you purchase it from one of the city’s Tourist Information Offices.

For any doubt regarding the Madrid City Card, you can call (+34) 915 787 810 or send an email to [email protected].

What are the benefits of the Madrid Tourist Card?

Prado Museum is one of my top 3 art favorite galleries in Madrid

The official Madrid sightseeing pass offers multiple benefits and discounts in the top-rated museums and other cultural and leisure attractions .

These are the ones that, in my opinion, are more interesting for most tourists. Just like in other tourist cards from cities all around the world, many attractions are included that may not be of as much interest to visitors staying only a few days in the city. Nevertheless, you can check out all the discounts on the official website .

  • Prado Museum: Free admission every day during the last two opening hours.
  • Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: 10% discount on admission and preferential access
  • Reina Sofía Museum: Preferential Access
  • Faro de Moncloa Observation Deck: 50% discount on the ticket price
  • Almudena Cathedral Museum: Free audio guide and 10% discount in-store (purchases over €20)
  • Wax Museum: 15% discount on the ticket price
  • Amusement Park: 20% discount on the ticket price and for 3 companions
  • Zoo Aquarium: 30% discount on the ticket price and for 3 companions.
  • MAMMA MIA Musical: 10% discount.
  • Matilda, The Musical: 10% discount.
  • Royal Palace: Preferential access

Metro Madrid

The Madrid City Card includes unlimited and free transportation within the city, including the metro network (Zone A), suburban trains (Zones 0 and A), city buses (all blue city bus lines), and BiciMAD e-bikes for a period of up to 5 consecutive days.

Just keep in mind that the 24-hour Airport Express shuttle bus line is not covered.

The Madrid Tourist Card can be a useful resource for tourists who want to explore the capital intensively, but it may not always be cost-effective.

In my opinion, if you meet these two conditions, my recommendation would be NOT to purchase the tourist pass:

  • The primary purpose of your trip is to visit the major tourist attractions of the capital, not every corner of the city.
  • You won’t be using public transportation excessively, considering that in Madrid you can walk to many attractions in the historic center, and the weather is suitable for strolling around the city.

From an economic standpoint, the card is not that worth it as discounts are not that high , and many attractions can currently be visited for free without needing the card on certain days/times.

Additionally, there are 10-journey passes available for public transportation, which should suffice without the need for unlimited travel.

I do find the fast pass for skipping lines at attractions interesting, but you will have to decide if it is worth paying the card’s price to save some waiting time. In this case, it can be useful to invest some time in good planning and visit the most popular attractions during less crowded hours.

tourist travel pass madrid

In conclusion, the Madrid Tourist Card can be an attractive option for certain visitors who want to explore the city extensively, offering the convenience of unlimited public transportation access, discounts, and priority entry to popular attractions all in one card.

However, for the average tourist, it may not be as economically beneficial. It’s essential to weigh the cost against the potential time and convenience savings, especially if your primary goal is to visit the city’s major attractions rather than every corner of it.

2 thoughts on “Madrid Tourist Card: Is It Worth It?”

The worst thing about the Madrid City Card is that it is not sold at Atocha Renfe station. Esmadrid SA assumes that all tourists only arrive by air. If I arrive in Madrid by AVE Renfe, I will need to buy a Metro ticket to a Tourist Information office. For tourists who don’t know Madrid, this can be a big challenge. Also visitors with luggage will have to wander with it to find the place. If I could buy the Madrid City Card in Atocha, I could use it immediately to get to my hotel. This is a very clumsy oversight by the company.

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass

Madrid Traveller

What is the best Madrid city pass?

madrid city pass

A Madrid city pass is well worth considering if you’re planning a trip to Madrid and you want to visit most of the main tourist attractions.

With a Madrid pass, you’ll save yourself both time and money because a Madrid city card generally works out cheaper than purchasing individual attraction tickets, and you won’t need to bother with lining up for tickets at the various attractions.

A Madrid tourist card usually includes top museums and famous landmarks like the Prado Museum, Royal Palace, Reina Sofía Museum, Real Madrid stadium, Thyssen Museum, and more.

I’ve put together this Madrid Pass Comparison to help you decide which is the best Madrid pass for your upcoming trip. Take your pick and decide which is the best city pass for Madrid that suits your needs.

Table of Contents

Madrid Card

The Madrid Card is a city pass or tourist card designed to enhance your experience while visiting Madrid. It offers access to the city’s top tourist, cultural, and leisure attractions, including skip-the-line access and self-guided audio tours at the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace. Additionally, it includes a 1-day or 2-day pass for a panoramic tour on the Red hop-on hop-off tourist bus and a city tour app with audio guides from local experts.

The card is 100% digital, allowing you to book dates and times for attractions online and receive tickets via email. This eliminates the need for physical ticket collection or printing, enabling you to start exploring Madrid immediately upon arrival. The card also provides a digital discount code for 10% off major purchases like museum tickets, guided tours, flamenco shows, and amusement parks.

The Madrid Card is particularly beneficial for those planning to spend an extended time in the city and see many attractions. It offers significant savings, the convenience of skipping long lines, and the flexibility of not having to collect physical tickets. However, for short stays or specific interests, the Madrid Museum Pass paired with a Madrid Travel City Pass for transport might be more suitable.

Key points to note:

  • The card doesn’t include public transport.
  • You must select visiting dates for attractions to receive your tickets.
  • The card offers a 10% discount on subsequent attractions, which can lead to substantial savings.

In summary, the Madrid Card is a valuable option if you’re looking to explore Madrid’s attractions conveniently and cost-effectively, especially if you have a packed itinerary and want to avoid long queues.

Madrid Museum Pass

The Madrid Museum Pass is an ideal tool for art enthusiasts visiting Madrid, allowing them to bypass long lines at the city’s top three museums: the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Center, and the Thyssen Museum. This pass offers skip-the-line access to the permanent collections and some temporary exhibitions at these museums, potentially saving you up to 20% on admission fees.

The pass is entirely digital, eliminating the need for physical ticket collection or printing. You can book you pass online and simply display the tickets on your smartphone upon arrival. This convenience allows for a more spontaneous and flexible visit, as there’s no need to book specific times for each museum, and the pass is valid for one year after redemption.

The Madrid Museum Pass is particularly beneficial if you have limited time in Madrid, as it grants priority access to the best museums, significantly reducing wait times. However, it may not be worth it for visitors planning to see only one museum or those with different priorities.

  • The pass doesn’t include public transport.
  • You must select a redeeming date to receive your tickets.
  • The pass is valid any day of the week, except Mondays at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
  • The pass is valid for one year after redemption, offering flexibility in scheduling museum visits.

In summary, the Madrid Museum Pass is a convenient and cost-effective option if you’re an art lover looking to explore Madrid’s renowned museums without the hassle of long lines and rigid scheduling.

Madrid Travel City Pass

The Madrid Travel City Pass , also known as the Tourist Ticket or Billete Turístico, is a convenient option for unlimited travel on public transport in Madrid. It’s a personal card that allows unlimited trips using regular public transport services in the region. To obtain the pass, you first need to purchase a Madrid Multi Card, which costs 2.50€, but the price is included in the Billete Turístico if it’s the first charge on the Multi Card.

The pass is available for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 days and comes in two zones: A and T. Zone A covers the area within the municipal boundaries, while Zone T includes the entire public transport network both within the city and surrounding areas, allowing travel to places like Toledo, Segovia, and Ávila.

Benefits of the Madrid Travel City Pass include:

  • Free unlimited rides on all public transport services (subway, light rail, buses, and trains) in Madrid and the region.
  • Validity from the time of first use for the consecutive calendar days selected.
  • Night services usage until 5:00 AM on the last day.
  • Cost-effectiveness, especially for Zone A for more than 2 days and any combination of Zone T.
  • 50% discount for children younger than 11.

The pass is simple to use, activated by placing it on the ticket reader. Once expired, the Multi Card can be recharged with single and 10-trip tickets. However, it’s important to note that the pass cannot be used on high-speed trains or Renfe Operadora regional trains.

It’s an excellent value for money and provides convenience. Among a variety of different tickets and passes issued, Madrid Travel City Pass is an ideal choice if you want to use public transportation extensively during your stay in Madrid.

Go City Madrid tourist card

The Go City Madrid tourist card is a comprehensive pass that simplifies exploring Madrid by offering access to over 20 museums and monuments. It’s available in various packages, including the All-Inclusive Pass and the Explorer Pass, catering to different durations and preferences. The All-Inclusive Pass provides virtually unlimited access to many attractions for a fixed number of days, while the Explorer Pass allows you to pre-pay for a fixed number of attractions with a 60-day validity.

The card is entirely digital, and once purchased, you’ll receive a confirmation email with details on how to download and activate it. You can print it, download it to your phone, or sync it with the app on your smartphone. The card is activated the first time you use it, not at the time of purchase, and each card is personal and non-transferable.

The Go City Madrid tourist card offers several benefits:

  • It’s cost-effective, as it’s cheaper than buying all the tickets separately.
  • It gives you free entrance to over 20 museums and monuments.
  • It allows you to bypass long ticket lines, saving time.
  • It can be used on tourist buses.
  • It guarantees admittance to attractions, as tickets are booked in advance.
  • The All-Inclusive Pass is valid for consecutive days from the first use, while the Explorer Pass has a 60-day validity from the first attraction visit.
  • Non-activated passes are valid for two years from the date of purchase and are eligible for a refund within 90 days if not activated.

The Go City Madrid tourist card does not include public transport, and you’ll need a separate travel city pass for that.

It’s an ideal tool if you’re looking to explore Madrid’s attractions conveniently and cost-effectively, especially with children, as their passes are discounted.

Madrid’s public transport system is without a doubt, fantastic. It is fast, safe, clean and very reliable. In comparison with other European cities, Madrid’s public transport is also considered cheap and very efficient, which makes getting around Madrid very easy. Madrid’s public transport consists of the Madrid Metro (underground), day & night buses, the ‘Metro Ligero’ (Madrid light rail) as well as the regional train system known as the ’Cercanías’ which are the suburban trains that connect the city of Madrid with rest of the Madrid region. So, no matter where you are going, Madrid’s public transport system will get you there.

Are you moving to Madrid for a longer period and would like to get a monthly pass? Get ahead and order your personal public transport card in advance.

There are also great alternatives to Madrid’s public transport when it comes to getting around Madrid. Alternatives like, ridesharing apps and car sharing options as well as e-Scooters, e-Bikes & Motor scooter rental services . Since June 2014, Madrid has also been offering public, electric bikes that you can rent at your convenience all over the city.

To keep reading all about Madrid’s transport options, check out the content overview and feel free to click on the topics you are most interested in. Each chapter contains relevant information regarding getting around Madrid. From details on how to get from and to the airport, ticket options, prices, schedules & transport zones to details on the various means of transportation available and how use them.

Furthermore, in our FAQ section at the bottom of this ’Getting Around Madrid’ guide, we will clarify some of the most common questions and doubts regarding Madrid’s public transport.

Important:  The Citylife team has collected & compiled the information on this page via intense research and investigation. It does not replace your own research!

1.3 Madrid Tourist Travel Pass

2.2 have your transport card delivered to the citylife office for free, 3.5 autobuses interurbanos – the suburban buses of madrid, 4.3 comparison tools, 5.2 car rentals, carsharing & ridesharing in madrid with discounts, 1. getting around madrid by public transport – ticket options & prices.

As previously mentioned, Madrid’s public transport system is very accessible and efficient. You can get all over the city centre by using just the Madrid metro and bus . The Madrid metro and bus systems are integrated, meaning that you can access the Madrid metro lines and the EMT bus lines with the same ’ticket’. Other available transportation means like the Cercanías and Renfre trains and the suburban buses which take you outside the city will have different ticket types and different tariffs. The beginning of this article will focus more on the main transport within the city center (metro & city bus), however if you wish to read more on Madrid’s Light Rail system, suburban buses and long distance options, you can skip ahead .

To start with, there are various ticket options available for the Madrid public transport system. Some of which are better for those staying in the city for mid to long-term periods while others are perfect for those visiting for a short-term period. In the section below we will explain each ticket option in detail.

1.1 Monthly Pass for Mid to Long-Term Stays

If you are coming to Madrid for a longer period – to study or work, for example – it is very likely that you will move around by public transport on a regular basis. In this case we highly recommend getting your personal public transport card . This card will give you access to the the monthly transport pass , known as the ’ Abono ’. Using a monthly pass is by far the cheapest and most convenient way as it gives you full access to all of Madrid’s public transport for 30 day periods.

When it comes to getting your public transport card , we highly recommend ordering it online in advance . Ideally about 15 days before you plan to arrive to Madrid . By doing this you will avoid long wait times to book an appointment as well as simply skipping the need to attend an appointment in the first place. By ordering online, your card will be delivered to you. For more details on how to order you public transportation card online either continue reading, or click here to skip ahead.

As we mentioned above, to get the monthly pass you must first get your personal transport card . This card costs 4€ and once you have it in your possession, you can then top it up with the monthly pass (’ Abono ’). The price of your monthly pass depends primarily on your age and the transport zones of Madrid you would like to have included – there are no special prices for students. Finally, every 30 days you will need to top up your personal public transport card with your new monthly pass to be able to continue to use Madrid’s public transport system. You can do so conveniently at one of the many metro stations at the machines either with cash or credit card.

Abono Joven (Monthly Youth Pass)

If you are under 26 years of age , you will be able to use the youth pass, known as ’Abono Joven’. With this pass you will only need to pay 20€ a month and you will be able to use all of Madrid’s transport options between all transport zones ! You can move freely by metro and bus all over the city, to its outskirts as well as to the airport without paying a supplement.

Abono Normal (Monthly Standard Pass)

If you are aged 26 or older you will have access to the standard monthly pass, known as ’Abono’. This pass requires users to pay per transport zone. The base price which covers zone A, currently costs 54,60€. If you need to include more zones, the price will rise. Click here for more information of each of Madrid’s zones.

The Madrid Transportaton Office has officially reduced prices of all transport ticket types until the end of 2023! For a detailed look on prices please refer to the official page here .

If the monthly pass is what you need, you can skip ahead in this article for instructions on how to order your public transport card online.

Above you see a price chart per-zone, however there are also inter-zone packages which combine certain zones together under one price. This is a great option for those who don’t often visit the more central zones and therefore do not want to pay for access to them. For more details on all pricing options, click here .

1.2 Single & 10 Trips Tickets

If you happen to be visiting Madrid for only a few days or weeks, or if you don’t need to use the public transport system on a daily basis, you can use Madrid’s more short-term option known as the Multi Card . As with the personal public transport card, you will first need to purchase the card itself (only 2.5€ ), then you top up the short-term pass of your choice onto the card. The Multi Card offers two options: Single tickets and 10 trip tickets.

Single & 10 trips tickets – Prices & Where to Buy

citylife-madrid-multi-transportation-card

A single journey on public transport in Madrid will usually cost between 1,50€ and 2€ , making it very budget friendly. If you don’t want to top up your card every time you need it, you should consider buying a 10 trip ticket which costs just 12,20€ . Both tickets work on metro and bus systems within zone A. As the Multi Card is not personalized, it can be shared with others .

Buying the Multi Card and it’s corresponding tickets is incredibly easy. All you need to do is go to any metro station in Madrid and place your order at any of the ticket machines there. These machines look like ATMs but will have the branding of the Madrid metro on them. Once there you can pay either in cash or with credit card.

Please be aware that you may change freely between various metro lines once you are inside the metro system. But changing from metro to bus or from one bus to another means that you have to use your card again. That being said, you can also top up your Multi Card from the bus driver – but only in cash.

To read more about the Multi Card, please click here .

The Madrid tourist travel pass gives you unlimited usage of zone A and T between 1-7 days. This is a very practical and very affordable way to get around Madrid on a short-term basis. This is especially true because the majority of Madrid’s most popular locations for visitors and tourists are located within zone A. Additionally, zone T is perfect for those planning to make day trips to some of the small cities located outside of Madrid.

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass – Prices & Where to Buy

Prices are determined by number of days and by desired zones . Check out the table below for a price breakdown of each. To buy the Madrid tourist pass you simply visit any metro station and use the ticket machines located there. Alternatively, you can buy these passes at the sales points at the Madrid airport. The Madrid tourist pass comes with the Multi Card included. Once the pass expires, you can top up the Multi Card with single or ten trips tickets and keep using it. Finally, please keep in mind that Madrid tourist pass cannot be shared between several people. Therefore, each person in your group must hold their own card. These can be used with both Personal and the Multi Public Transport Cards.

A Single Ticket, once loaded on any card, must be used on the day of purchase. If you attempt to use a Single Ticket the day after it was purchased, the turnstile will not accept it because it has expired. Single Tickets loaded from midnight until the end of service are also valid the following day until the end of the service. A Public Transport Card can hold up to 10 Single Tickets, which may be purchased all at once or separately.

For 10-Journey Tickets , One Public Transport Card can hold up to two 10-journey tickets with a maximum of 20 journeys of the same ticket type. For example, it is possible to have 20 journeys of two 10-Journey MetroSur Tickets and 20 journeys of two Metrobús Tickets on the same card. It is not possible to have 30 journeys of three 10-Journey MetroSur Tickets on a single card. Two 10-Journey Tickets can be loaded in a single purchase or two separate purchases. In order to load another 10-Journey Ticket, there may be no more than 10 journeys remaining on the card.

Map of rates zones

A 30-Day Season Ticket can only be purchased with the Personal Public Transport Card. This type of ticket cannot be loaded on the Multi card.

Depending on the profile of the Personal Public Transport Card, which is determined by the age of the cardholder, a 30-Day Young Season Ticket, a 30-Day Standard Season Ticket or a 30-Day +65 Free Season Ticket may be purchased. The user has 10 days to start using it once loaded onto the card. After this, the 30-day validity period begins even if it has not been used.

Only one type of season ticket can be loaded onto the same card. Thus, for example, it is not possible to have one season ticket for Zone A and another for Zone B1 on the same card. However, the same type of season ticket can be loaded twice to the same card but it can only be loaded a second time if the user has already begun using the first one.

The 30-day Season Ticket is valid for the zone indicated on the ticket and all zones inside the perimeter of that zone, i.e., a B3 Season Ticket is also valid in zones A, B1, B2 and B3.

The 30-Day Interzonal Season Ticket is valid for the range of zones indicated on the ticket. For example, a B2-C1 Season Ticket is valid for zones B2, B3 and C1.

With a +65 Personal Public Transport Card can purchase a 30-Day E1, 30-Day E2 or 30-Day Interzonal Season Ticket valid for zones E1 and/or E2 at the same rate that applies to the holders of standard Personal Public Transport Cards.

This ticket can be purchased at Metro ticket machines, tobacconist’s and other authorised points of sale, Bankia ATMs (with some exceptions) and Renfe-Cercanías stations.

CANCELLATION OF THE SALE OF ANNUAL PASS:

The Board of Directors of the Regional Transport Consortium, at its meeting held on 28 December 2023, agreed to continue with the suspension of the sale of individual annual passes and to maintain the sale to legal entities (annual pass for companies). For these, the same discount as in 2023 shall apply.

You can continue to use your personal public transport card to top it up with 30-day passes or 10-trip tickets (Metrobus, Bonobús, etc.).

Tourist ticket

imagen tarjetas check

Zona A: All services in this zone. Zona T: All transport services in the Community of Madrid, including zones E1 and E2, except RENFE service to Toledo. Not valid on the Airport Express bus line.

Tourist Tickets can only be loaded on Multi cards and no other ticket types can be added to the card until the Tourist Ticket has expired. This is a personal ticket, so each passenger must acquire their own ticket in order to travel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 consecutive calendar days, starting at the time of the first validation. For cards purchased along with a Tourist Ticket, the price of the card is included in the price of the Tourist Ticket itself.

It is only possible to have one type of Tourist Ticket on a card. Thus, for example, it is not possible to have a 3-day Zone A Tourist Ticket and a 4-day Zone A Tourist Ticket. However, the same type of ticket can be loaded twice to the same card but it can only be loaded a second time if the user has already begun using the first one.

Children under the age of 11 receive a 50% discount on the purchase of a Tourist Ticket.

Fare compensation for transport tickets issued by Metro de Madrid and TFM in the period during which applications for the accreditation of large family status are being processed

In accordance with Article 7.1 of Law 40/2003 of 18 November 2003 on the Protection of Large Families, the benefits granted to large families shall take effect from the date of submission of the application for recognition or renewal of the official certificate. Given that the user can only demonstrate their status as beneficiary once s/he has the corresponding certificate, the amounts paid in excess during the period between the application for recognition or renewal of official certification recognising large family status and the time when s/he can provide official proof of such status must be regularised. In this respect, regularisation will apply to:

  • Tickets loaded on the passenger's personal public transport card proving large family status.
  • Furthermore, these transport tickets need to have been acquired in the time between the date of application and the date of issue of the large family certificate.

The user has one month from the date of resolution of the recognition or renewal of the official large family status certificate in which to apply for regularisation. Once this period has elapsed, it is understood that the user has waived the right to regularisation.

The procedure to be followed to request compensation for transport tickets issued by Metro de Madrid and TFM is as follows:

  • Single Metro Zone A
  • Single MetroNorte
  • Single MetroSur
  • Single MetroEste
  • 10-trip TFM tickets

All other tickets valid for travel on Metro de Madrid are issued by the Consorcio General de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM), and passengers must go to one of its management offices to request compensation. To do so, it is necessary to make an appointment.

THE REGULARISATION PROCEDURE

There is a difference between:

  • Initial applications for a large family certificate
  • Renewals of a large family certificate

INITIAL APPLICATION FOR A LARGE FAMILY STATUS CERTIFICATE

The passenger needs to apply via the usual Metro de Madrid channels. At the time of application, the personal public transport card must indicate current large family status.

The refund of the difference in price between the non-discounted and the discounted fare will be made by bank transfer.

RENEWAL OF A LARGE FAMILY STATUS CERTIFICATE

In the case of renewals, the CRTM will extend the discount on the passenger's personal public transport card for a period of four months from the expiry of the current card, which is considered sufficient time to complete the renewal process. To obtain this extension, the user must go to a CRTM management office, to submit their application for the renewal of their large family certificate (*). In the event that the processing of the renewal exceeds the four months indicated above, compensation will be made in the same way as indicated in the case of initial applications.

(*) For further information, please go to the ‘Regulations’ section of the CRTM website, and then to ‘ Transport Tickets ’.

* Valid for Metro.

Tourist Travel Card

Madrid’s tourist travel card allows visitors to travel as many times as needed on all the city’s public transport system (metro, urban buses, and cercanía trains). There are five types of Tourist Cards, depending on their validity: 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 calendar days.

Is The Madrid City Pass Worth It?

If you’re planning a visit to Madrid, chances are that you’ve already figured out what you want to see there, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve made a big list. If that list has a lot of museums and similar attractions on it, it’s definitely time to consider investing in the Madrid City Pass.

The Madrid City Pass is a card designed for tourists. It provides you with a discount on a lot of Madrid’s famous tourist attractions . And in this review, I will go into detail on how and why it makes sense for you.

Note:  Since there are several “Madrid Cards” available for purchase, I’ll be focusing on the City Pass available on gomadrid.com in this review.

Why You Should Buy The Madrid City Pass

  • If you plan to visit a lot of museums in Madrid and hate waiting in line, then definitely consider getting the card. It offers priority access to two of Madrid’s busiest attractions , The Prado Museum and the Real Madrid Stadium Tour.
  • You will save money on transportation , with the free 24h Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour ticket and the two-way shuttle airport transfer! A taxi ride from the city center to and from the airport could set you back up to 60€, and this alone will almost break you even.
  • 20% discount on excursions. You can save money on a number of different excursions, so if you were planning to visit Toledo or the Las Rozas Village, consider investing in the pass.
  • There’s no time limit on the card. Once you purchase it, it is valid for an entire year, after the first time you use it. So, if you know you will visit Madrid several times this year, then you’ll definitely get your money’s worth with the City Pass. This applies only to this particular City Pass – other city cards do have a time limit, which you choose upon purchase.
  • You get 20% discount on other popular tourist attractions in Madrid. Get the card if you really want to immerse yourself in Madrid’s culture.
  • 20% discount for bus and bike tours of Madrid. The Beer Bike tour is one of the most popular bike tours, and it is included in the pass. If you are travelling in a large group, the City Pass could save you up to 60€ on this attraction.
  • You can buy it online. The pass will be emailed to you, along with a discount code (the discount applies only to tickets purchased via ticketbar ). You don’t have to exchange it for a real physical card, or pick it up somewhere.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy The Madrid City Pass

  • It’s hard to break even . With a price tag of 80€ for adults, you won’t get your money’s worth unless you visit pretty much everything you can with the card. And, visiting museums you aren’t interested in just to break even will make your trip feel like a chore.
  • Many museums in Madrid offer free entry at some point . The Prado Museum offers free entry after 6 PM (after 5 PM on Sundays and holidays). However, the lines during this time are very, very long, so bring some snacks.
  • You still have to pay for transportation . The free Hop-On Hop-Off bus ticket is good for the first day, and after that you still have to buy the Metro Card if you want to get around town. I suggest The Madrid Tourist Travel Pass , as if it will save you a ton of money on transportation.
  • If you are travelling with your family, the City Passes get really expensive . Passes for you, your partner and 2 kids (5+ years old) will set you back 248€. If you ask me, you are better off spending that money on extending your stay in Madrid.

Discounted Attractions You Can See With The Madrid City Pass

These are just some of the many attractions available to you at a discounted price, if you get the City Pass. And, they are so worth it!

The Prado Museum

Goya, Velázquez, Rubens and El Greco are just a few artists whose paintings you can see in this museum. It is one of the largest museums in Spain, and one of the most visited museums in the entire world . Honestly, it should be a crime to visit Madrid and not visit the Prado. You wouldn’t leave Paris without going to the Louvre, would you?

The Reina Sofia Museum

It is the home of Picasso’s Guernica , and I think this alone is a reason to pay a visit to this museum. It is mainly dedicated to Spanish 20 th century art, but it does feature a number of works by international artists. The Reina Sofia Museum is also one of the largest museums in the world, which is the home of modern and contemporary art.

Real Madrid Stadium Tour

I myself am an FC Barcelona fan, so this doesn’t really sound like an appealing way to spend my time. However, for any die-hard Real Madrid fans, this sounds like a dream come true. You get to see the locker rooms, the trophies exhibition, the presidential box, and literally every corner of the stadium.

Royal Palace Walking Tour

Even though the Spanish Royal Family does not actually reside here, it is their official home. If you are lucky enough, you might be able to see the change of guards. It is an incredible event that happens just a few times every year, and it involves hundreds of infantry, cavalry and horses! A must-see if you happen to be in Madrid when it happens. If you want to really experience the history of Spain and the way its royals lived, definitely check out the Royal Palace.

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

The double-decker bus will take you to all the destinations I mentioned above, and to many others. You can also experience both the new modern Madrid, and the historic one, with the 2 different routes of the bus tour . Choose a route and stick to it, or hop off the bus and get on the one doing the other route – it’s completely up to you. You can even just stay on the bus all day long, admiring the architectural beauty of Madrid, with audio commentary in 14 different languages!

Beer Bike Madrid

If you love to go on tours, then you shouldn’t miss this one. The Beer Bike Madrid is a city tour on a tandem bike for 16 people . It’s the perfect way to experience a new city, especially if you are travelling in a large group. Single tickets are also available if you don’t mind riding around with a bunch of strangers. Since it is a Beer bike, you can actually order beer and sangria, which is really cool. You just can’t drink them during the ride itself, but feel free to do so before or after the tour.

I honestly don’t know, as this entirely depends on the amount of time you want to spend in Madrid. If you’re just visiting for a couple of days, then it will be very hard for you to get your money’s worth out of the pass. If you’re going to stay in Madrid for a while, then the card is a good investment.

The best advice I can give you is to sit down and make a plan . Figure out what attractions you really want to visit, and check out how much the individual tickets cost . If the individual tickets will cost you less than the pass, then there’s no point in getting it. You don’t want to feel an obligation to visit museums you aren’t even interested in just to get your money’s worth.

On the other hand, if you want to visit more than one tourist attraction a day , and you will stay in Madrid for a while, then the City Pass is a really good investment. Especially because you get to skip the line for the 2 busiest attractions in Madrid . The card really does have a ton of benefits , and if you think you can get your money’s worth with it, it really is worth purchasing.

How to acquire a tourist travel pass in Madrid

First of all, if you're still not familiar with how the Madrid Metro works, you can read this post , and once you've got the basic information clear, we can explain how the tourist travel pass -also known as the "tourist card"- works. This type of travel pass will allow you to use all public transport in the Autonomous Region of Madrid without limits during its validity period, making it extremely cost-effective.

The tourist pass is valid for a specified number of days from the date you use it for the first time. You can use it for the first time whenever you want, it does not have to be on the day of purchase. It can also be used for night services until 05:00 hours on the last day of validity. There are tourist transport passes for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 days.

Which pass should you choose based on your area?

You can choose the pass for two zones: A or T .

If you are going to travel mainly in the city centre, we recommend using the zone A pass, as it includes the following services:

  • Madrid Metro in fare zone A (Madrid Capital) including the 3 euro supplement for the T1-T2-T3 Airport Metro station and the T4 Airport station.
  • All EMT blue city bus lines (except the yellow buses covering the 24-hour Airport Express line).
  • Zones 0 and A of the Renfe Madrid suburban train network.
  • The Light Railway ML1.

However, if you also want to enjoy areas around Madrid, the best option is the T zone pass, with which you can travel in the following areas:

  • All Metro zones (fare zones A, B1, B2 and B3).
  • All EMT blue urban bus lines (zone A) and intercity green bus lines in the Autonomous Region of Madrid (except the Airport Express) including services to Guadalajara and Toledo. It covers the 8 fare zones (6 in the Autonomous Region of Madrid and 2 in Castilla-La Mancha) and the entire geographical range of Travel Passes, from zone A to zone E2.
  • The entire Renfe suburban network in Madrid, including services to Guadalajara on the C-2 suburban line.
  • Light Railway lines ML2 and ML3 and the Parla Tramway line ML4.

How and where to buy the tourist travel pass?

You will have to upload it to your Tarjeta Multi card (free if you do it for the first time). You can acquire the card and upload the tourist travel pass at all Metro stations, at the Airport T4 suburban train station, at the headquarters of the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium, at tobacconists and other authorised points of sale, and at Light Railway stations.

Depending on the number of days covered by the travel pass and the zones, prices range from 8 to 70 euros. You can check the exact fares on the official Madrid Transport Consortium website , where you can also find information on discounts and special fares for children.

Finally, remember that at Gran View Apartments, we will be happy to help you if you have any other questions about Madrid, while you enjoy our fully equipped apartments in the heart of the city, as well as our facilities: gym, sauna, terrace, pool, rooftop bar and much more.

Tourist Pass

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass

The Madrid Tourist Travel Pass can be used in conjunction with the Madrid Card, the Madrid Cultura Card, or on its own as an unlimited public transportation pass to the city.

It’s good for 1, 2,3, 5, or 7 calendar days in adult or child versions. You can also choose Zone A or Zone T, depending on where in the city you’ll be staying and where you want to go.

Zone A passes are less expensive, but are restricted to Madrid and the inner suburbs. Zone A includes all Metro lines, all EMT bus lines except the Airport Express, all RENFE suburban train stations that are in Zone A, and the ML1 light rail line.

The Zone T pass covers areas as far away as Guadalajara and Toledo. Zone T is valid in all Zone A areas, and adds interurban buses, all RENFE stations, and the ML2, ML3, and Parla Tramway.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Madrid Tourist Travel Pass is no longer offered. We suggest you try the Flexi Attractions Pass or Unlimited Attractions Pass from iVenture Madrid .

Top Included Madrid Attractions

Unlimited-use public transport with two options.

See the complete list of attractions and tours in the sidebar.

What’s Good?

Madrid public transportation is clean and reliable and reaches almost anywhere you’d want to go in and around the city.

What Could get better?

The subway runs until 1:30am, but your pass ends at midnight of the last day purchased , so plan ahead.

Be aware that the Madrid Card and Madrid Cultura Card run for 24-hour increments, but the Tourist Travel Pass works for calendar days, so these passes’ expiration may be out of sync .

Get Your Money’s Worth

The card is good for calendar days, so if you arrive at the airport in the evening, it may be better to pay for the trip into the city separately and not activate your tourist travel pass until your first full day of sightseeing.

Insider Tips

Although there are plenty of guards and security cameras, pickpocketing can be a problem at Metro stations in the most touristy areas, especially the Sol station, so having a tourist travel pass instead of cash can bring peace of mind.

Coupon Codes

There are no current coupons for Madrid Tourist Travel Pass. Check back again as we are constantly updating the site with new coupons.

Where to Buy It

The card is available at many outlets. You can buy it at Expedia, Orbitz or Travelocity or you can buy it once you get to Madrid but these are not great options as you may pay more. The best place the buy the card is at the Viator website. Viator guarantees the lowest prices, no-fee cancelling, no-fee date changes, 24/7 customer care, and airline miles (with a minimum spend).

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass Information

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass, Madrid Transport, Madrid Metro, Madrid

The Madrid Tourist Travel Pass and it’s benefits.

The Madrid Tourist Travel Pass is a cost effective way to use the Public Transport System. A day travel pass will cost you 8 Euros. Why do I say it is cost effective? If you take into account that a single metro ticket is costing 1 Euro and a metro ticket from the airport costs 2 Euros, then this is an excellent opportunity to save money.

How does the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass work?

The Madrid Tourist travel Pass is valid for all of Madrid’s Bus and metro services, within in the city. Included are the local suburban trains and inner-city light railway. There are two types of travel passes: Zone A and Zone T. Zone A will suffice for Madrid City Center and the Airport and Zone T includes areas outside of Madrid. Zone T is more expensive because it covers a wider area. The Madrid Travel Pass can be purchased for 1 and up to 7 days. Children under 11 years pay half-price. The travel pass can be purchased online and either send to your home or it can be collected at various points throughout the city, including at the airport.

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass, Madrid Transport, Madrid Metro, Madrid

The card comes sealed inside a plastic bag and it includes a detailed map of the Metro, bus and train system. They also include a map with tourist attractions and instructions on how to use the and activate the Travel Pass. Once the card is activated (with your passport number) an expiry date will be printed on the back. The card will be valid until 5am on the day after the expiry date. This is excellent if you want to use the late nocturnal transport service or if you have to travel very early to the airport.

I purchased my Madrid Travel Pass online from Neo Experience and had the option to pay with Paypal, After printing the voucher, I can now present and activate it when we arrive at Madrid airport. Once we are in Madrid, I will write a paragraph or more to explain how the activation worked as well as the ease of having this done at the airport.

Important update to this post.

We arrived early at Barajas Airport in Madrid and found the Neo Experience Stand where we could pick our passes up. We waited there for an hour and inquired at various places when they will open. The website said 7.30. At 8.30 we decided to go to the other office in T2, which was quite a way to get there. We arrived there just before 9 and that was when the offices opened. We waited until they opened.

The procedure to get your pass is simple. When you book your pass online there is a barcode which they need. They also ask for your passport and you get issued with the pass. We didn’t get a map or any other information. This ticket you use for buses, trains and metro. Remember to insert it into the ticket machines whenever you use public transport.
