The column that says Gregg Jones' last two ghost walks in the historic town of Greenwich sponsored by the Cumberland County Historical Society take place Thursday night at 7 and 8 p.m., but it's limited to 60 scared kids.

Good evening!

This is the good time of the night to read about the horrors on the Greenwich Ghost Walks.

Two years ago, Lauren Taniguchi went on one of Jones' walks ...

Jones pointed out the Richard Wood Mansion, located next to the first Wawa, as a historic site where Wood's brother is believed to wander the halls at night.

A portrait of George Bacon Wood was found upstairs at the home and unleashed the sound of footsteps among other eerie occurrences once it was displayed, as if hanging the portrait in the home "released him," Jones said.

Next door, the Pumpkin House is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Amy, a young girl who died there in 1840.

"People have reported childish tricks like items being moved about at night, but one family bought some toys and dolls and put them in the attic; after that, they didn't hear anything," Jones said.

Jones shared a family account at the Francis Wood House, the residence of a Dr. Schneider in the late 1800s and also Jones' childhood home.

While Jones' mother, Dorothy, was home alone one night, a chimney fire broke out, endangering the sleeping woman.

"My mom says a woman shook her and said, 'Pauline, get up,'" he said. "My mother's birth name is Pauline, but she was born in western Pennsylvania and is known locally by everyone as Dorothy or Dot. She just couldn't explain it."

At Jones' parents' current home, the Charles Beatty Fithian House, built in 1800, Jones had his own mysterious encounter in 1989. He was upstairs painting one October evening when he heard a vibrating noise emanating down the hallway leading up to one of the home's two attics.

"I looked around, and there was a door with an original hinge latch hardware that was vibrating. I said, 'OK, let me use logic here. It's a cool night with a breeze — but the door shake just didn't go with the wind,'" Jones recalled. "I said, 'Quit it, it's not funny,' and it would stop for a minute then start again. I decided I was done painting and left right then. The next day I went back and found nothing."

Jones also said he and his buddies got spooked one Mischief Night years ago when one of them spotted a little old lady reading a book in a chair at the Pirate House, where a young couple lived with no elderly occupants at the time.

At the Pirate House, chains can be heard clanging from time to time and are believed to be the audible evidence of the ghost of John the Pirate, who was chained up in the attic and "left to rot" after short-changing his crew at the port of entry, Jones said.

Walking on the tour trail behind the Old Ferry Tavern and the site of Cumberland County's first jail, Jones described "The Greenwich Horror" of the spring of 1778.

Capt. Dan Bowen reported that a platoon of British troops was resting by the Cohansey River when a "huge, hairy beast" splashed out of the water and pounced on the sleeping soldiers.

Shooting at but failing to kill the attacker — speculated by some to have been a Jersey Devil of sorts — Privates Jason White and George Chandler were slain by the beast.

General "Mad Anthony" Wayne is believed to haunt the same area riding a phantom white horse, hoping to confront a resident who shot him many years ago.

Finally, Jones told a tale from the Thomas Ewing House of 1707, aka Resurrection Hall.

Car keys often would be moved around the house in the night, but the house's most noteworthy haunting story came from the 1970s, when a mother awoke to her baby crying in the middle of the night.

"The mother was warming a bottle for her baby, but then the baby stopped crying.

"When the mother went to the baby, it had a warm bottle in its mouth," Jones said.

"For the mother, the final straw was when she went back to the kitchen and felt a cool whisk of air, smelled perfume and heard a lady's voice say, 'Get out of my house.'

"She ran out of the house with her baby in her arms and had her husband come back with a moving van on his own to get their things."

If you can get in, walk at your own risk, and have good batteries in your flashlight.

Call 856-455-8580 to register, or scalp a ticket.

"Just wanted to say something about the mural on the side of the old Val-Mode Building.

"I met Cesar Viveros, the muralist who is doing the mural and did the one in the center of Downtown Bridgeton.

"I met Cesar when he was working on the mural downtown and helped him to get the seniors at the Senior Center at the Sports Hall of Fame to paint some of the panels for him.

"When Cesar was working on that mural, he asked me for help on his next mural in Bridgeton by providing him with photos and history material about some of the factories that have been in Bridgeton through out our history.

"Cesar and I met at the old Val Mode Building (now a senior apartment building) on Friday so he could show me the mural going up.

"Besides Cesar using some of the photos I provided, he also put the one of my mom I gave him as she worked in sewing factories all her life.

"So the photo of the girl behind the Singer sewing machine is my mom (Ruth Crowe) at age 17.

"You will see her in one of the photos at age 84 with Cesar, and me with Cesar.

"Cesar is a muralist from Philadelphia, and if you have seen any of the murals in Philly, you have seen some of his work.

"If you would like to see Casar in action, he will be back down here on Monday, late morning, to work on the mural.''

— Bob Crowe

Ghosts of Greenwich Village: A Spine-Chilling Tour Through Time

Greenwich Village tour

Greenwich Village, a charming and historic neighborhood in New York City, is known for its vibrant arts scene, picturesque streets, and colorful history. But did you know that the Village is also home to a myriad of ghostly tales and haunted locations? Join us as we embark on a ghost Greenwich Village tour, unearthing the eerie side of this beloved neighborhood. Are you ready for a spine-chilling journey through time?

The Phantom of Washington Square Park: A Ghostly Prelude

The ghost Greenwich Village tour  kicks off at the iconic Washington Square Park, a bustling public space that was once a burial ground for thousands of New Yorkers. Legend has it that the ghost of a young woman named Rose Butler, who was hanged in 1820 for arson, still roams the park, searching for her lost love. Keep your eyes peeled as you stroll through the park – you never know when you might encounter Rose or one of the many other spirits that are said to wander this haunted green space.

The House of Death: A Haunting on West 10th Street

As we continue our tour, we venture to West 10th Street, home to one of New York City’s most infamous haunted houses – the House of Death . This foreboding brownstone has a dark history, with a staggering 22 spirits believed to reside within its walls. Among the ghostly inhabitants is the famous author Mark Twain, who lived in the house briefly in the early 20th century. Visitors have reported seeing Twain’s specter, clad in a white suit, roaming the halls and staircases of this spine-tingling abode.

The Cherry Lane Theatre: A Playful Poltergeist

Next on our ghostly tour is the Cherry Lane Theatre , the oldest continuously operating off-Broadway theater in New York City. The theater is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former stagehand named Charles, who has a penchant for playing tricks on the actors and crew. From unexplained sounds to objects mysteriously moving, Charles keeps everyone on their toes, ensuring that the show always goes on – with a supernatural twist!

The Morris-Jumel Mansion: A Regal Apparition

A short trip uptown brings us to the Morris-Jumel Mansion , a stately home that once served as George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The mansion is allegedly haunted by the spirit of Eliza Jumel, a wealthy socialite who lived in the house during the 19th century. Eliza’s ghost is said to appear in an elegant period dress, wandering the halls and even interacting with unsuspecting visitors. Be prepared for a brush with paranormal royalty as you explore this historic haunted house.

The Chilling Tales of Chumley’s: Spirits and Spirits

The ghost Greenwich Village tour wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Chumley’s, a former speakeasy-turned-restaurant with a haunting twist. This legendary watering hole is said to be haunted by the spirits of its former patrons, who simply can’t resist the allure of the establishment’s lively atmosphere and delicious fare. Keep an eye out for ghostly revelers as you enjoy a drink or a bite to eat in this storied haunt.

A Spirited Culinary Adventure: Haunted Greenwich Village Restaurants

As we delve deeper into the ghostly side of Greenwich Village, we can’t overlook the haunted dining options that offer a unique and spooky culinary experience.

One If By Land, Two If By Sea: A Romantic Haunting

Often hailed as one of the most romantic restaurants in New York City, One If By Land, Two If By Sea is also known for its paranormal activity. The building, which once served as Aaron Burr’s carriage house, is said to be haunted by the spirits of Burr and his daughter, Theodosia. Diners have reported encountering the ghostly pair, as well as experiencing mysterious cold spots and unexplained sounds. Enjoy a candlelit dinner while keeping an eye out for the restaurant’s spectral residents.

White Horse Tavern: A Literary Haunt

The White Horse Tavern , a favorite hangout of literary legends such as Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg, is also home to a few ghostly patrons. Thomas, who tragically passed away after a night of heavy drinking at the tavern, is said to still frequent his favorite booth. Visitors have reported seeing his spirit and feeling inexplicable cold chills while sitting in the booth where he spent his final hours.

The Ghostly Streets of Greenwich Village: Macabre Tales from the Past

As we continue our journey through the haunted history of Greenwich Village, let’s take a moment to explore the chilling stories that have unfolded on the neighborhood’s picturesque streets.

The Hanging Tree: A Gory Legend

Located near the intersection of Washington Square Park and Minetta Lane, the so-called “Hanging Tree” is an infamous landmark with a macabre past. This ancient English Elm is said to have been the site of numerous public executions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Legend has it that the spirits of those hanged from its branches still linger, creating an eerie atmosphere around the tree. Pay a visit to this chilling site, and see if you can sense the spectral presence of those who met their gruesome end.

The Spectral Scribe: The Ghost of Edgar Allan Poe

Greenwich Village was once home to the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. His former residence at 85 West 3rd Street is said to be haunted by the spirit of the troubled author. Poe’s ghost has been reported pacing the halls, perhaps still seeking inspiration for his chilling tales. Visit the site of Poe’s former home, and immerse yourself in the eerie atmosphere that once nurtured the mind of this literary genius.

Tips for a Successful Ghost Tour: Making the Most of Your Supernatural Experience

Private Well Testing

This past summer the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) Private Well Outreach Project undertook a private well outreach project for radioactivity in South Jersey private well water. They developed an educational pamphlet (linked here) to spread more awareness of radioactivity in South Jersey private well water and provide recommendations for private well owners to best manage their drinking water. To help promote distribution of the pamphlet, they offered free well water testing in raw and treated water in South Jersey. A total of 19 eligible South Jersey municipalities were identified as having a high percentage (>10%) of private wells with gross alpha radioactivity.

The recruitment yielded over 260 online registrants from 12 of the eligible municipalities. Based on available resources they were able to contact 171 registrants and test the water from 109 homes. Among the 109 homes sampled, they found 26 (24%) homes are being exposed to gross alpha radioactivity > 5 pCi/L at their tap. More project details and results are now available in a Project Summary posted on their website linked here. The project summary includes township specific results.

https://www.nj.gov/health/ceohs/environmental-occupational/private-well-outreach/South_Jersey_Gross_Alpha_Project_Summary.pdf

They plan to continue promoting awareness of radioactivity in South Jersey private well water with follow-up testing in Summer 2024. They  will follow-up with homeowners that they were not able to reach this summer and will also connect with you and other partners to help spread the word. However, their testing efforts will only be able to reach a small percentage of the at-risk homes. They need your help to continue to educate private well owners about the affordable and reasonable steps (install and maintain a water softener and how to find funding support) they can take to keep their families safe from radium in their drinking water.
