Beyond the Return to run for a decade – GTA boss

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has revealed that the ‘Beyond The Return’ initiative which follows the successful ‘Year of Return’ campaign will last for 10 years, as part of a strategy to attract investments to various sectors of the economy. The move, according to the CEO of the GTA, Akwasi Agyeman, has become necessary due to the interest most of the visitors who patronized the Year of Return showed in investing in some sectors of the country. “The Beyond the Return is a 10-year project; so, once we start, we are not looking at just a year’s KPI but broadly the way these things will stand the test of time. So, between January and now, since we ended the Year of Return, what we have been doing is to agree on all the pillars with the various agencies. For example, when it comes to ‘Invest in Ghana’ it is the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) that is going to drive it; when it comes to the ease of visa, it is the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ministry of Interior; when it comes to the real estate, we are talking to banks and real estate companies; and so it was necessary that we take a second look at the pillars and ensure that they are well grounded before we outdoor it,” Mr. Agyeman said in the interview with the B&FT. He further stated that the initiative, launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo last month, is expected to significantly transform the economy in the next decade, adding that several measures are being put in place to shape the execution of activities during the period. The focus areas include investments in capital markets and real estate, as well as, citizenship, easy visa application and heritage infrastructure upgrade. All these pillars, are expected to form the driving force behind of the Beyond The Return initiative and will be launched in March this year. The various agencies will be mandated to fashion out mechanisms to help achieve the goals over the 10-year period. “After Independence Day we will officially outdoor the pillars … the pillars will broadly define who does what. For example, the Minister of Finance has announced the Sankofa Account – an investment fund for those in the diaspora, but this is something between the GIPC and the Bank of Ghana which needs some clarification so that when people come in, they know who to contact and how they can get involved.” This year, the GTA is aiming to build on the success of the Year of Return programme which saw over 1.1 million tourists visiting the country in 2019 from the 956,000 recorded in 2018. Last year’s figure represents an about 200,000 increase in number of visits over the previous year. The numbers, according to the GTA, came from America, Caribbean and Nigeria. As a result, Mr. Agyeman said the GTA is pushing hard on marketing and developing the heritage infrastructure, or tourist sites to give visitors more options when they arrive in the country. “One of the pillars of the Beyond the Return is the improvement in our heritage infrastructure. During the Year of Return we realized that we were limited in the areas we could take people to Cape Coast, Elmina and Aassin Manso but there are other areas like Golu, Salaga, Pikworo all the way to Bono Manso so we are going to focus on infrastructure development; the product development and marketing,” Mr. Agyeman added. The Ghana Tourism Authority disclosed that it cost the country about GH¢6 million to promote the ‘Year of Return’ campaign.

Let’s use tourism to change our fortunes – Ghana Tourism Authority boss
By Hafsa Obeng
Accra, Sept. 27, GNA – Mr Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has urged industry players to reflect on how to use tourism to change the country’s fortunes as the world celebrates World Tourism Day.
He said the celebration of the Day must also serve as a time to reflect on what could be done in collaboration with all stakeholders to build a very resilient industry in the future.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, in Accra, Mr Agyeman said the theme for this year’s global celebration: “Rethinking Tourism, ” was appropriate, especially after the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector.
He said, “For us here in Ghana, rethinking tourism means rethinking the work we do, how we can improve, be more effective and efficient, and see tourism as a low hanging fruit that can help change the fortunes of our country.”
“God has blessed us, we have the seas, rivers, lakes, sunshine, and everything that any country can wish for. What we must do is to see these things as things that can turn into gold for us. Cities like Dubai, in the UAE do not have all that we have, but they have had a lot of man-made products. We have the natural products so let us get people to understand and make good use of it.”
The Tourism Sector, last year, generated $2.1 billion in 2021 revenue for the country.
This year, it is expected to contribute $2.3 billion with a projected one million visitors.
The sector is currently the third largest contributor to Ghana’s GDP.
The CEO said it was also important not be over dependent on cash crops and raw materials and that the service industry could help transform the country.
“We know that our industry can employ the numbers, generate the revenue and bring in the visitors, not just international, but locally, and can also help in national cohesion, as tourist arrivals touch every sector, including airlines, hotels, drivers, fashion, chop bars and that is what we want to create.”
Mr Agyeman said as part of the celebration, a team of industry players had moved to the host region, Upper West Region, from Accra, through Kumasi, Techiman, Damongo, Jirapa to Wa for the big celebration.
The trip is for them to experience Ghana by visiting various tourist sites along the stretch and to promote domestic tourism.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day is observed every year on September 27 with the aim of fostering awareness among the international community about the importance of tourism and its social, economic, political, and cultural values.
This year’s celebration themed: “Rethinking Tourism, ” focuses on how to accelerate tourism recovery through a collaborative engagement of all stakeholders around a shared vision to build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.
The official global celebration is being held in Bali, Indonesia, to highlight the shift towards tourism as a crucial pillar of development.

Government to roll out of e-visa from first quarter of 2024 – gta.
Government says it is working to roll out the Electronic Visa platform from the first quarter of 2024.
The move is part of a broader initiative to deal with challenges facing tourists and investors in their quest to travel to Ghana.
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, disclosed this on PM Express: Business Edition with host George Wiafe on November 23, 2023.
“The Foreign Affairs Ministry has been working on this and even at a point in time, it announced for vendors to apply, demonstrating the significant progress that has been made on this initiative,” the Ghana Tourism Authority boss announced.
The CEO noted that Ghana is competing with other countries in the region with respect to investors and tourist visits, therefore everything must be done to help position Ghana as the preferred investment destination in the region as well as tourist arrivals.
This is also part of a broader programme to improve tourism in the country it calls "Easing the Diaspora Pathway” to reduce the challenges people go through when they want to visit Ghana.
Visa-On-Arrival Initiative
Persons who want to travel to Ghana may have to be issued a visa before an airline will allow the passenger to fly to Accra.
However, due to the implementation of the 'Visa-On-Arrival initiative' by the government from December 1 to January 15, 2024, the airlines are now required to allow passengers who opt for this option to fly to Accra without insisting on the prior visa issued by the Government of Ghana.
The GTA CEO said this is just the first step, whiles the government is also working on a "Free Visa Initiative" for persons traveling to Ghana.
"We know that December is our peak period for tourist arrivals and we need to make it easier for people to travel to Ghana,” the Chief Executive of the GTA.
He was however quick to add that, visitors will still have to pay at the Airport for the visa that will be issued by immigration officials.
The Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority added that "we are ensuring that the system pay for itself, so we don’t end up falling on the consolidated fund, for supporting some of the initiatives in the sector".
Airlines directed to comply with this directive
Mr. Agyeman disclosed that the Transport Ministry has engaged the various airlines about this Visa-On-Arrival and they are expected to comply, by allowing these passengers to travel to Ghana without a Visa issued by the Government of Ghana before flying to Accra.
“We have also followed up with several engagements with these airlines to ensure this Visa-On-Arrival by the Government of Ghana is captured in their systems,” Mr Agyeman added.
The CEO noted that after this measure, “we don’t want people to be embarrassed at the airport when flying to Ghana”.

Ghana Tourism Authority set to celebrate 50 years with impressive growth in the sector
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched its 50th-anniversary celebrations with remarkable impact and growth in the tourism space commencing this week across the country.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GTA, Akwasi Agyeman during the launch recognized the efforts and sacrifices of people who have contributed in diverse ways to improve the authority as he discussed the performance of Ghana’s tourism sector.
Mr. Agyeman announced significant growth in the country’s tourism sector during the launch. According to him, Ghana experienced a 47% increase in international arrivals from 623,523 in 2021 to 914,892 in 2022, outperforming most African countries which were doing 65% of pre-pandemic levels, while Ghana did 81%.
He reiterated that this achievement was only plausible courtesy of the “Legacy initiatives” of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
“This is a testament to the success of the many strategies we put in place such as the Destination Ghana campaign launched by H.E the President and our continuing effort through the Beyond the Return Project to be the Mecca of the African diaspora,” he said.
Mr. Agyeman also reported that the domestic tourism sector also recorded an impressive growth of 55% increase in domestic tourism from 588,946 in 2021, to 937,087 in 2022. He believes that “Ghanaians are discovering the beauty of our country and are choosing to explore their own backyard, which is great news for the local economy. Tourist sites such as Aburi Botanical Gardens, the Kumasi Zoo and the Kakum National Park all showed strong performance.”
He also highlighted GTA’s commitment as he promised continual and significant efforts to improve the tourism industry, including infrastructure improvements that will enhance the visitor experience and make it easier for tourists to access the many attractions that Ghana has to offer. The GTA boss intimated that, work has started on several projects, including the Aburi Botanical Garden, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Yaa Asantewaa Museum and the Pikworo Slave camp among others.
“MOUs were signed with some 13 communities for project upgrades. This is in line with the new Legislative Instrument LI 2393 on Tourist sites and attractions. In the year, we undertook sensitisation of all players in the industry,” he added.
Mr. Agyeman further commended the private sector for investing in the tourism industry and expressed the commitment of the Ghana Tourism Authority to promoting Ghana as a top tourist destination.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal who graced the occasion congratulated GTA and its CEO for pushing beyond the limit. He, however, tasked the authority to attract a total of 1.2 million visitors by the end of the year.
Activities for the GTA @50 anniversary are set to include industry games, awards and dinner night, a presidential summit on rethinking Ghana’s tourism and familiarization trips among other exciting activities. The authority called on all stakeholders and Ghanaians to join them in the celebration.

Tourism is Ghana’s future -GTA CEO
THE CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Akwasi Agyemang, has said the country’s economic future depends on tourism and not gold, timber or oil that are usually referred to.
According to GTA boss, countries like United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Malaysia which do not have many natural resources compared to Ghana are economically sound through tourism.
Mr Agyemang, speaking during the maiden edition of the West Africa Integrated Travel (WAIT) forum, said, “Gold and oil may get finished in this country, we may cut all trees and timber would get finished, but tourism will forever remain and that is Ghana’s future.”
About 400 tourism industry players in West Africa participated in the main edition of the Travel Forum, which was on the theme: ‘Promoting Integrated Travel within West Africa- Bridging the Gap.’
The participants included tour operators and officials from immigration, customs, transportation, water and waste companies from Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria.
The two-day forum organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority in partnership with the West Africa Tourism Organisation was aimed at beginning a process of promoting joint marketing efforts amongst tourism boards and authorities in the sub-region.
It also seeks to increase awareness of West Africa’s tourism products and related information, as well as provide a platform to draw the attention of related authorities and policy makers to ease up travel blocks within the sub-region.
Mr Agyemang added that as a tourism authority, Ghana had taken it upon itself to lead the charge for integrated tourism within West Africa as is being done in Southern and Eastern Africa.
“If you go to southern Africa now, Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana have what we call Retosa, which seeks to bring their tourism potential together. The same thing is happening in Eastern Africa – Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. We feel that West Africa has to also integrate, come together, market and position itself and seek to attract enough tourists into our various countries.
“We cannot do it as individual country, we can do it as a bloc, [and] it will help us with the economics of scale that comes to negotiate better deals with airlines, tour operators who are selling packages into Africa and all that,” he said.

Christmas festivities: Government to issue visa on arrival for visitors, says GTA boss
The ceo of the ghana tourism authority (gta) akwasi agyeman said the visa on arrival arrangement for this festive season takes effect this week.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) will issue visa on arrival for visitors and revelers coming to the country for the Christmas and New Year festivities .
The move is expected to ease the hurdle and burden such individuals go through in securing visa to Ghana.
Appearing on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (22 December), the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority Akwasi Agyeman said the visa on arrival arrangement for this festive season takes effect this week.
“Thanks to the collaborative effort of the ministry of tourism, foreign affairs, and interior, we’re going to have the visa on arrival regime instituted sometime this week,” Agyeman said.
“So, people can pick up their passports, buy their tickets and come enjoy Christmas in Ghana,” he said.
The GTA boss said they have engaged hotels in Ghana to subsidise their rates to accommodate more tourists who will be visiting the country.
“We’ve done engagements with hotels on the fact that ‘December in Ghana’ is here to stay so they shouldn’t keep their prices at a higher level,” he said.
