Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag
Final Caribbean Cruise Packing Tips
- One of the most recommended items for a cruise is a hanging toiletry bag because counter space will be limited on board the ship. Plus, they’re easy to pack and keep things super organized!
- Readers suggest bringing at least two bathing suits on your trip, as it can sometimes take a day for one to fully dry, and no one likes getting into a wet bathing suit!
- Lanyards are highly recommended for keeping your room pass/sea pass handy at all times.
- A tote bag will be useful to carry your sea pass, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and other essentials you’ll want throughout the day.
One reader said she loved having a reusable water bottle with her to fill and take with her on port days and to just have on hand while on board!

I did not see pajamas mentioned. I like to travel with pj’s that look more like lounging outfits in case I venture on our balcony or need to evacuate the room quickly or someone comes to the door.
Hi Carol, many TFG readers wonder why I never include pajamas in the packing lists. The answer is that they are not part of the essential capsule wardrobe items. I count them as extra pieces of clothing. Ideally, the pieces you choose could also be worn for other activities — not just sleeping.
So love how you make your pjs multi purpose!
I have been looking for a new bag to pack my toiletries. I think this one would work. The Bagsmart Hanging Toiletry Bag for my trip in December. Thank you!
I am going on my first cruise and am excited to try some of these! I did find that the travel toiletry bag doesn’t fold up nicely if it’s too full.
I’m a repeat cruiser but it always helps to check out what other’s are packing.

This is super helpful as I will be heading on a Caribbean cruise in just a few weeks. I am trying to become more proficient in packing, but I always feel like I am going to want something that I didn’t bring.
We just booked our first long post-covid trip….a 10 Day cruise to the Caribbean. We’ve been there many times but it’s a bit overwhelming to get back into the “travel mode”. Thank you for all the wonderful information you provide for all of us!!!
Never bothered to rent a tux for my S.O. when we first started cruising, Our first cruise we got a tux on ebay for 50$, in the past few years got a new one for 100$ for our sons wedding on ebay. Was reused on cruises…Tux rental is super expensive on board. These days there’s a huge trend away from super formal nights..so a tux is no loner expected.
We wear a tux always on formal night. The only “trend away” is people basically don’t make the effort. The staff actually very much appreciates and acknowledges the effort to wear one
Love these great ideas. Hope to travel here soon! I
These are such great tips. Planning Caribbean trip near future!

Absolutely! Thanks for your suggestion 🙂

Cruise Wear for Women Over 50: What to Pack
Summer is fast approaching, and that means travel. Several of my readers have asked me to share what to pack for a cruise. The answer depends on the time of year, where you’re cruising, and your ship’s formality.
I never check bags when I fly, so I pack versatile pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. I bring fewer items than most do because I wear things several times in different ways.
Shore excursions call for comfort and layers. Flat shoes, a straw tote, and sunnies are part of my everyday wear for a cruise. A white shirt tied at the waist is great for lightweight coverage and waist definition. I can take it off and stow it in my tote if it gets too hot.
What to Pack
- 3- 4 bottoms, skirts, or pants
- 1-2 casual to dressy dresses
- a wrap and a lightweight jacket for ocean breezes
- knits and crushable fabrics
- stick to 2 main colors for your garments, and add pizzazz with accessories
- solid colors allow more mixing and matching and are less memorable
- several scarves to change up the look of tops
- comfortable walking shoes
- dressy flats or small heels if you like
- a tote for shore excursions and trips to the pool aboard the ship
- a small evening bag
- scarves of varying size and weight
- it’s best to travel with nice costume jewelry
- several pairs of sunglasses because they change your look instantly, and you’re likely to wear them daily
A simple jersey dress can be invaluable. They come out of your bag unwrinkled and are easy care. Full-length ones can dress up or down and do double duty. They’re also stretchy and accommodate the several-pound weight gain I always get on a cruise:).
A change of shoes, bag, and jewelry transforms this jersey dress for dinner and a show in the evening.
A knit jacket or blazer polishes many looks, It can top Bermuda shorts during the day or a jersey dress at night. I leave all my good jewelry at home and pack lots of costume pieces. Having a variety of necklaces, earrings and scarves can change the look of any outfit.
Do you have any upcoming cruises?
Have a fabulous week!

No cruise planned for this year, but I did two different cruises last year. Easy care knits are a must have for cruises. Also more than one swimsuit if the weather will be warm and always a jacket of some sort. Clothes that can do double duty are essential. This summer I have two different trips planned. One is our annual camping trip to the High Sierras with 2 of my sons and that’s easy for clothes. The other trip is combination business and pleasure. One week in New Orleans for the annual Avon convention and then directly to Alabama to visit my daughter and her family. So, some business casual with one dressier outfit for the convention and then some totally casual for family visit. Knits are always my go to for traveling.
Cruising is wonderful. Out of our 16 cruises, the one this February to Asia was the most challenging to pack for. It was 90 humid degrees in Singapore to snow in Japan at Mt. Fuji! Always bring a jacket. I didn’t and bought one on board in my husbands size to wear–it was warm but not my style. I’m looking forward to our next cruise in August to northern Europe and seeing St. Petersburg. I’d also recommend to always bring a cross body bag like the bagallini brand, lightweight and rfid protected…
I usually take a couple of maxi skirts and one pair of knit wider leg pants (Chico’s) and different tops that can be worn with both plus a light knit jacket as ships tend to be on the cool side at night. Of course there are very elegant women present who wear evening dresses but I have never felt out of place. For day time I always take a windbreaker jacket as you just don’t know what it will be like no matter if you are in Istanbul or Buenos Aires. Have a wonderful time, Jennifer!
I love The striped dress on you! The blazer was such a nice addition. I am going on and Alaskan cruise in 3 weeks so I will need some layers. Also we are thinking rain. I also take a selection of costume jewelry a couple of “statement” necklaces. Your necklace was perfect. Love your blog.
Thank you Dianne
We’re about to go on our first cruise next month and I’m so glad I found this on Pinterest today, Jennifer! Didn’t even realize it was you, then I thought, “She looks familiar!” haha! Anyway, thanks for this and your looks are awesome!

Very pretty. I wear jersey maxi dresses whenever I travel. Takes you from breakfast to churches to walking around to a nice dinner. It’s very smart paired with the white shirt.
I thought the photo with the tree man was showing how he was so taken with you that he had to hustle out of his truck to check you out. Stick with this theory, will you as it’s working! It’s the PERFECT backdrop set up.
LOL! I had the same thought! He’d have been crazy not to get a better look at this beautiful lady! Brenda
You’re a doll Brenda!
That’s hilarious Kymberly! I hadn’t thought of that. 🙂
Anything that packs well is on my list for a cruise or any vacation. I am traveling at least once a month for the rest of the year, sometimes more than that, so I am going to be on the lookout for some Chico’s wear!
Your travel schedule in enviable Carol! Lucky you.
I love how you have styled this striped dress in two unique ways, Jen. You have dressed it up and dressed it down just perfectly for vacation wear–whether a cruise or resort vacation. Chico’s has some fun pieces this season from what I’ve seen on their TV ads. I’ve only been on one cruise, but with my new travel business I see more cruising in the future. Love how you are keeping it real with the gardener. 😉 xx, Heather PS-thanks for the kind words on our fire. Such a tough time. We are safe and sound though, feeling grateful. xx
Your new travel business is brilliant. You always know the very best places to vacation! Glad things are calmed down! xo
I love the dress and you are right just changing it up really changes the look. Great list but it would be perfect if it included a Haralee.Com Sleepwear pajamas set. Just saying, you need something light weight and comfy and UPF50 to sleep in or relax on your balcony!
You’re right!! That’s exactly what’s missing from my list!
I love the look! And the tree guy is perfect!
i’m not heading for a cruise but loved your styling as summer sets in–or WILL set in–on the east coast.
That black and white dress is perfection!
YOU ARE IN THE TOP 10 for the FABULOUS CHICO’s contest!!!
Hi Jennifer – loved the post but it made me chuckle a bit as I’m going on my 4th cruise quite soon and I will so not be putting a sun hat and sandals in my suitcase because I’m going to Norway quite soon. Actually, I could be wrong, it could be sunny and warm so will pack a tiny sun-hat, but it could also rain (very likely), it could also be cold, it could even snow right at the top of Norway. I love going to Norway (it’s a popular destination for cruisers in Europe). Actually, if anyone in the US is going anywhere Norway, even in the summer, do pack a rain coat and a warm top!
Also all previous (3) cruises have evenings when you dress up – men in a tux and bow tie, women in a long frocks. I do not ever do casual so I take long frocks and cocktail dresses for all the evenings not just the Gala nights – for me that’s what cruising is all about! Trying hard to cut down, though, as for the first time I’m flying to the embarkation port!! I love the stripy dress above in your pics!
Ha ha ha, that’s funny! But I like the dress a lot. Those stripes are different in a nice way!
That’s what I like about them too Namcy:)
Wonderful advice and so practical! I enjoyed all your photos, particularly the last one which shows you have a delightful sense of humor.
Thanks Carol. I think I’ll share more of my bloopers. Life is too short not to. Thanks for reading.
Great dress! I love black & white together, and the asymmetrical stripes are wonderful! Great necklace, too!
Happy Sunday!
Thanks Andrea! I love the stripes too.
Sorry the black & white stripe is not really attractive, to much for the eyes !!
It’s a busy stripe but I love the angles. Thanks for commenting.
Great post and love the dress! Chico’s has really gotten my attention after BAM! Thanks for sharing your beautiful self!
Thanks so much! I’m loving Chico’s too.
You look great in Chico’s, Jennifer! Let’s cruise!
Omg! I love you for doing this! We set sail in 5 weeks and my chore for today is to assess both our wardrobes to start getting what we need. And I can always find something as Chicos!
Chico’s is perfect for cruise wear. Have a great trip!

Let’s Cruise Away in Macy’s Resort Fashion Today!
Share this:
It’s cold outside folks; let’s face it. The blah of Washington, D.C.’s winter can make you feel like a famous airline slogan, “Wanna get away!” As for me, I want to travel far, far away and put on some “happy” wears.
“I wanna go where the sun has sprinkled the rainbow all over my clothes and even my toes. I wanna wear colorful midriffs, flowy skirts and cool shades while the sun drips radiance all over my face. I wanna breeze down the sunlit sands of a desert beach that won’t blow me down any neighborhood street. I’m going to Portugal, Spain, a Bahamas getaway, or a moonlight cruise through Montego Bay. I have got to get away! And I’ve got the wears to take me there, I found them all at Macy’s, right around here.”
Let’s Cruise Away in Macy’s Resort Fashion Today!/Rocking That Style! Aunni’s Fashion and Beauty Column (Courtesy Photos)
I researched the luxury trends in resort and cruise fashion on all the chic and boutique fashion websites. The one-of-a-kind styles boasted hip design, perfectly shaped tops and bottoms, statement jackets, “it” bags and accessories, and all were super expensive. The luxury resort and cruise designers had created unique details and conquered innovative fabric technologies. I began to imagine my resort budget as the incredible shrinking dollar bill.
I decided to take a look at Macys.com, after that luxury downer. I found many resort and cruise design inspirations for women and men at moderate prices. The designs were cool, and the styles were cute! I found my rainbow. Some mega designers like Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Calvin Klein and Michael Kors have luxury inspired collections at Macy’s. Other designers like Bar III are innovators that design exclusively for the retailer.
Professor Karen Pine tells us there is psychological power in the right choices of clothing that can influence a person’s happiness. Pine, a psychology expert, gave her inaugural public lecture on “The Psychology of Fashion” at Bilgi University, Istanbul, in 2011. Meditating on her thoughts set my passion on fire. I marched right down to Macy’s Downtown-Metro Center and picked out all my “happy” outfits for resort and cruise travel gear.
I immediately fancied a hot pink and red number by Maison Jules, a colorblocked jumpsuit designed exclusively for Macy’s. It was everything I hoped for—a wrapped tie-front bodice and wide, flowy pant legs. I was over the top when I found my “it” bag, the Calvin Klein “Reese” Floral Studded tote, to be exact. An extra large tote in a black floral pattern, this bag reps how I want to fashion my style. I picked the latest Kenneth Cole stiletto sandals to set the look off. You can never be too tall in heels! As for jewelry, I was set ablaze with Thalia’s Sodi’s two-tone, red crystal lips on gold hardware. I loved the pendant necklace, drop-hoop earrings, the cuff bracelet, and the stretch ring. What a fashion jubilee! I was “happy!” The sun had kissed my face as I basked in Macy’s resort and cruise wear.
For my guy, I picked out a baby-blue, adidas superstar tracksuit and trefoil logo tee. I wanted him blue as sunny skies lingering over the bluest ocean in the Maldives. Macy’s even has the Adidas carolina blue and white superstar sneakers to match. To finalize my guy’s look, I chose a dark blue, camo print Michael Kors backpack. My vision of resort and cruise was perfected and I was ready to travel far, far away.
Andrea “Aunni” Young, Rocking That Style! Columnist
My incredible shrinking dollar bill budget stretched far and wide with Megan Lugo at my side.
“I am available to help a customer looking for a last minute outfit, a special occasion ensemble or even a complete wardrobe refresh to find what they need,” Lugo dished. Lugo is a Macy’s stylist at the Downtown-Metro flagship store and her service is free. I recommend her.
See you on the fashion runway. Ciao!

Cruise Wear
Cruisewear for men: What guys should pack for a cruise
Perhaps one of the most understated joys of cruising is that you only have to unpack once. The challenge lies in what to pack in the first place. While some may say that guys have it easier than women, choosing the right cruisewear for men can be just as tricky.
No matter the destination, men will need certain clothing essentials for a cruise that they might not need for other vacations. This can range from attire for formal or themed nights to the right outfits for a range of activities in port.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
If you're wondering exactly what you need to wear on a cruise — or need to assist your husband, father, son, partner or male friend — we've got you covered with helpful specifics on the perfect cruisewear for men. Read on to discover what guys should pack for their next cruise.
What should men wear during the day on a cruise?
Most cruises are casual getaways during the day. Pack and dress for the kind of activities you'll enjoy on board, whether it's lounging at the pool (a rash guard, swim trunks, flip-flops and a hat), sweating it out in the gym (athleticwear and sneakers) or hanging out with a book or card game in a lounge (shorts or jeans and a comfortable top).
Daytime dress can be a bit more elevated on Europe cruises, as well as ships with older or wealthier clientele. This more refined style can best be described as resort casual, where you'll find mostly polos and collared shirts during the day. Linen or khaki pants or Bermuda shorts complete the look.
Don't forget to pack appropriate clothing for activities in port. You'll want to dress in layers, bring a hat for sun protection, a jacket or vest for cool mornings or windy afternoons, and wear sturdy shoes for hikes or sneakers for exploring a town. Tote around beach flip-flops for a quick change if you're mixing up beach time with excursions that require more walking.
What's acceptable attire for men for dinner on casual evenings?
Across all cruise lines, table service dinners will always feel more elevated, often the only time of day when a dress code is clearly communicated. That said, casual evenings have become more casual, especially on the big-ship lines – which can be a relief to men who don't want to schlep their workweek suits on vacation with them.
As a general guideline, if you're at a table service restaurant for dinner (whether it be the main dining room or a specialty restaurant on board), men should dress in a collared shirt and long pants. Jeans tend to be acceptable on casual evenings, as long as they're not riddled with holes, and on some lines, like always-relaxed Norwegian Cruise Line, a nice T-shirt is fine. (A fitted T-shirt with a jacket over it is never a problem.)
What you can't wear, according to the dinner dress code on most lines, are bathing suits, cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts and baseball hats.
Shorts are an ambiguous, often frowned upon, option for evening attire. Most dress codes won't specifically prohibit shorts, leaving it up to the individual. A pair of chino, pleated or linen shorts can suffice for a more refined look, especially when paired with a collared shirt. Cutoffs, denim, cargo shorts and sports shorts at any seated, table service dinner are a no-go.

As for shoes, sneakers can be permissible on nonformal nights, but footwear like beach flip-flops are often prohibited.
While teens should emulate the grown-ups for dinnerwear, most cruise lines don't fuss about the dress code for younger boys. If you can't get your kid into a polo shirt and khakis, a clean shirt and nonathletic shorts will suffice.
If you'd rather spend your evening in gym shorts and flip-flops, the buffet and other fast casual or counter-service venues will have more relaxed dress codes at night. Or, you can order room service and enjoy dinner in your bathrobe.
Are formal nights still a thing? Will I need to bring a tuxedo?
Most major cruise lines hold formal nights, usually twice on a weeklong sailing. These days, the theme is more "dress your best" or "elegant" than strictly formal. Even on big-ship cruise lines, guests find it fun to don a more upscale look, pose for a professional photo shoot and enjoy dinner, drinks and perhaps a show in style.
Formal nights on most lines don't mean black tie. On casual lines, such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, men can get away with a button-down, long-sleeve shirt, khakis, nice shoes and no tie. On more upscale lines, guys should pack a suit or at least a sports coat and slacks. Ties are usually optional.
When in doubt, pack a jacket you can always take off if no one else is wearing one.
Some cruise lines, however, skew a bit fancier. Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings.
While full tuxedo regalia on black-tie evenings is encouraged (satin lapel, pocket trim, satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers), a dark suit and necktie pass muster.

Also, culturally appropriate formal attire is always an option, such as Scottish kilt suits or military dress uniforms.
If you're traveling with family, boys and teenagers are required to dress in accordance with the guidelines for dining at table service restaurants on formal nights as well, but the stakes are lower. The minimum requirement for kids is nice slacks and a collared shirt. Teens should opt for dress shoes, but younger boys can get away with sneakers.
If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.
On some lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line , elegant night is always optional.
Do guys need to dress up on theme nights?
Many cruise lines will have themed evenings or parties where you might want to dress the part. If you're attending a themed cruise (such as a gay cruise or music cruise ), be prepared for costume parties on multiple nights.
Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire).
Disney Cruise Line passengers regularly dress up for its hallmark Pirate Night. Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Night encourages guests to don red attire.
Themed attire on theme nights is not required for dining and is opt-in fun. If you're traveling with a group, organizing matching costumes or outfits can enhance the fun and make for great vacation photos. Check with your cruise line about which theme nights you should expect.

What are the best cruise clothing and accessories for men?
Need to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe before your cruise vacation? Here are our picks of cruisewear staples for men.
A classic Hawaiian shirt
If you're sailing on a tropical itinerary, you're going to want to make sure you pack at least one Hawaiian floral shirt. The Columbia Men's Tamiami Short-sleeve Shirt is a top choice, with SPF 40 sun protection and nice ventilation.
A shirt for hot days in port
At sea, you've got the benefit of the ocean breezes, but tropical ports can get sweltering hot, especially in the summer months. Opt for the Vineyard Vines Men's Destin Stripe Sankaty Performance Polo for its moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric, along with its SPF 30 sun protection.
A pair of travel pants
The best pair of travel pants balance comfort and function and are acceptable on board and in port. The 33,000ft Men's Waterproof Pants are surprisingly comfortable, breathable and have a nice flexible give to them. They also feature a commendable 10,000mm waterproof rating, great for coverage if you get stuck exploring in the rain.
A pair of sandals for most occasions
From the pool deck to the streets of a port, the right pair of sandals signify vacation. The sophisticated yet practical Ecco Men's Flowt Luxe Slide Sandals are an ideal match for days spent walking, yet have an elegant design that can fit well into a smart, casual dinner on board. If the dinner dress code has a strict no-sandals policy, the Cole Haan Men's 2.Zerogrand Penny Loafers are a great nautical alternative.
The ideal layer for windy nights on deck
When you're out at sea it can get windy, especially at night. Pack The North Face Men's Cyclone Windbreaker Jacket , which features a compact, lightweight and durable design. The jacket is windproof, water-repellent and has UPF 40+.
Water shoes to protect your feet
If you're planning for any water-based adventures on your cruise, a high-quality pair of water shoes will help protect your feet. Merrell Men's Wildwood Aerosport Water Shoes are light, comfortable and breathable. They also offer great traction on slippery rocks, shell-ridden beaches and the ship's decks.
The best men's cruise travel accessories
- Accessory storage: Keep your neckties crisp with this sturdy case for storage and travel. Or, fit all your formal night accouterments in this men's accessories storage and travel case .
- A compact on-the-go bag: The Bellroy Mini Sling Bag is great for roving both the ship and port with enough room to store your cellphone, ship pass and a few essentials such as lip balm, sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
- Shoe maintenance: These quality shoe bags keep your street and deck-worn shoes separate from your clothes. SneakErasers are a great travel accessory to buff out any scuff marks you may pick up on your journey.
- Staying hydrated: A reusable water bottle is essential on a cruise, especially while in port. The Hydro Flask water bottle is a favorite for its durable design and temperature retention. Cruise lines allow reusable bottles, though they must be empty when boarding.
- Express yourself: Stretch beyond your normal style — you're on a ship! Cruise life gives you the freedom to add some character and flair to your look, so pack some fun accessories like these nautical cuff links , colorful lapel pins or a flashy hat .

Bottom line
It's not "anything goes," but you'll find more flexibility than ever when it comes to cruise line dress codes. When in doubt, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed, especially when arriving for a seated dinner. Better to pack the tie and jacket and ditch them if no one else is wearing them than to risk awkward conversations with the crew or side-eye from other diners if you're not in compliance with the attire policy.
And if casual is the only way you wish to dress on vacation, know you can always go to the buffet or order room service, and you won't go hungry for want of khakis and a button-down shirt.

What is resort wear?
Also known as “cruise wear,” resort wear is exactly what it sounds like: Summer-ready, lightweight, packable clothing that you can wear on vacation. Pieces are typically made from breathable materials, such as cotton, silk, straw, and microfiber, while patterns tend to be either bright and fun, like you’d see on a Hawaiian shirt, or classic, such as nautical print.
How should I dress for a resort?
It’s your vacation, so you should dress however makes you happy! That said, if you’re headed someplace sunny, you’ll probably want several swimsuits, a few swim cover-ups, a sun hat, and sandals. You’ll also want some lightweight, flowy dresses, pants or skirts, and tops. Make sure you have at least one outfit that feels fancy enough to wear out to a nice dinner, and plenty of pieces that are easy to pair and wear anywhere your adventure happens to take you.
What’s the best resort wear for women over 50?
Since resort wear shows off a lot more skin than, say, your comfy winter sweatpants , you’ll want pieces that are supportive, comfortable, and of course, stylish.
While some women over 50 will be more than happy to show off their bodies in an itsy-bitsy bikini and shorts , others may prefer pieces with a bit more coverage. One-piece swimsuits or tankinis (Buy from L.L. Bean , $69.99), which have an elongated, tank top-like cut, are slightly more conservative. You can also throw a cover-up (Buy from Anthropologie , $88) over your suit for a bit of added modesty and sun protection.
Cropped pants or shorts with a 7 or 5-inch cut (Buy from Tommy Bahama , $79.50) will keep you cool without riding up your backside, and oversized hats will keep aging skin safe from the sun’s harmful rays.
Regardless of your age, however, the best resort wear will consist of the pieces you feel the most attractive and confident in. We’ve chosen a wide selection of breezy finds that will be suitable for whatever activities your vacation may bring, whether you’re strolling the beach or lounging in a hammock.

The Best Resort Wear For Women Over 50
Look into the sun maxi dress.
Buy from Free People, $98
Why we like it:
Summer is the time to show some skin, and it doesn’t get much sexier than this gorgeous halter dress. The Look Into The Sun Maxi is the perfect blend of elegant and fun, making it a great option for nights spent dining and dancing. Although the flowy bottom looks airy light, the material is substantial enough to keep everything in one place if a breeze comes your way. The top is adjustable, and there are some subtle slits on the side. Flattering to both small chested ladies, as well as the busty, you’ll love how the rayon material skims your curves.
Editor’s review: “I love a halter dress, so I was excited to try this one sent to me from Free People! As you may already know, halter dresses are universally flattering to all bust sizes. I also love a maxi, and was pleasantly surprised by the weight of this one. Some dresses with a guazy look feel really flimsy, but not this one! I could feel the quality as soon as I tried it on, and I know I’d be comfortable wearing this to a fancy summer wedding or resort restaurant. I tried a small, and it fit great. I don’t have much in the bust department, so I really appreciated how I could adjust the straps and cups to cover me. You don’t need a bra with it, but I still think I’ll invest in some push-up pasties when I wear this out on the town. The dress is long, and even with my 3.5-inch heels the back dragged, so unless you’re very tall (I’m five-foot-five), you may want to have it hemmed. Is it worth it? Uh, yes! It’s simply too lovely to pass up.”
Summersalt The Ruffle Blackflip Swimsuit
Buy from Summersalt, $66.50 (was $95) – Use code: SALE30
- 13 different print choices
- Deep-V front
- 4.2 out of 5-star rating on Summersalt
The straps on The Ruffle Blackflip make it look like a cute bodysuit for summer, and if you pair it with shorts and wedges, that’s how it can be worn! Of course, it’s perfect for the pool, too, or frolicking along the beach. The swimsuit has built-in soft cups for coverage, as well as Summersault’s signature compression material for a comfortable fit. We love it in black, but it also comes in many different prints, such as strawberry and spritz, and nectarine orchard. Whatever you decide on, we’re sure you’ll look unbelievable!
Vix Paula Hermanny Sarong
Buy from Vix Paula Hermanny, $138
- Available in 3 different prints
- Made of 100 percent viscose

16 items that are worth buying at Macy's — and 6 more you should skip
- Macy's is one of the oldest and largest department store chains in the US, with more than 500 locations around the country.
- We consulted shopping experts and various blogs and online reviews to find the best and worst products at Macy's.
- Here are 16 products to buy at Macy's and six to consider skipping.
- Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .
As one of the oldest and largest department store chains in the country, Macy's has long been a beloved destination for everything from blenders to designer clothing.
Since its founding in 1858, Macy's has established itself not only as a significant part of the American retail market, but also as a pop-cultural icon thanks to events like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and classic films like "Miracle on 34th Street."
Today, Macy's continues to be a department store powerhouse and a well-known spot to score deals on high-quality products. "Not only does Macy's have everything under the sun from apparel to appliances, they're also known for their incredible promotions," Sara Skirboll, shopping and trends expert at RetailMeNot, told Business Insider.
With so many items to choose from, it can be difficult to find the best bargains. With that in mind, here are 16 products to buy at Macy's and six you should skip.
Skip: Big Electronics
Just because Macy's sells electronics, doesn't necessarily mean you should purchase a new flat-screen television for your living room, according to Trae Bodge, shopping expert and founder of Truetrae.com.
"Macy's is not known for their pricing on electronics and they don't often have sales in this category," Bodge told Business Insider. "You'd be better off shopping at Best Buy, Walmart or Target."
Skip: Small Electronics
While you're at it, you should also consider skipping smaller electronic devices like headphones, Kerry Sherin, senior content manager at Offers.com, told GoBankingRates.
Buy: Macy's private-label fashion
Bodge said not to overlook Macy's private-label lines, which tend to be not only incredibly stylish but also cheap.
"There are several affordable fashion brands that are exclusive to Macy's, like Alfani for men and women, and Epic Threads for kids," Bodge told Business Insider. "Fun clothes for the whole family that can't be found elsewhere."
Buy: Small kitchen appliances
Macy's is particularly ideal for snagging small kitchen appliances like mixers, blenders, and toaster ovens, among others, according to Skirboll.
"From cutlery to small appliances and cookware, Macy's offers all of the kitchen essentials and gadgets: Air Fryers, slow cookers, pots and pans," she said. "Plus, these items often experience markdowns as new arrivals are always being released."
Skip: Large appliances
However, on the flipside, Sherin told GOBankingRates that Macy's doesn't offer much in the large appliance category.
Buy: Furniture
While you may want to skip the large electronics and appliances, Bodge said Macy's is a good spot to find furniture that is "not only beautiful and well-made, but competitively priced."
Buy: Luggage
Macy's has a large selection of high quality luggage from top brands worth bringing along on your travels, according to Sherrin.
Buy: Silverware
As one of the most popular wedding registry destinations, it's no surprise Macy's has an impressive selection of kitchen items like silverware . Engaged or not, experts recommend hitting the department store for high quality utensils.
Thanks to Macy's wedding registry cachet, the store is also a great destination for a china set .
Buy: Outerwear
Macy's has a vast assortment of name-brand coats and jackets including The North Face, Calvin Klein, and Guess which you can often find at a bargain.
"This is a hard category to stay competitive in, and Macy's does just that," Sherin told GOBankingRates. "You may see prices cheaper elsewhere on the internet, but Macy's keeps a large and diverse inventory that you can often find discounted."
Skip: Fitness products
Though Macy's does in fact sell fitness equipment, Terence Loose of GOBankingRates wrote shoppers are likely better off looking elsewhere given the retailer doesn't specialize in exercise products. This is especially true if you're looking for a specific exercise tool or product, given Macy's limited supply.
Buy: Designer Clothing
Macy's may not have as luxe of a collection as more upscale department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue or sister company Bloomingdale's, but it still has a robust collection of designer clothing . Plus, if you play your cards right, you could find products at significant discounts.
Buy: Cosmetics
"Macy's beauty departments are large and many of the brands run promotions, where you can receive free full- or sample-sized products with a minimum purchase," Bodge said.
Buy: Fragrances
Same goes for fragrances , Bodge said.
Buy: Wedding gifts
"If you know someone who is engaged and has registered at Macy's as well as other retailers, shopping for their gift at Macy's will help them earn 5 percent back," according to Hodge.
Buy: Bedding
In general, shopping experts were unanimous that items you would see on a wedding registry are a good call to buy at Macy's, including bedding .
Skip: Dyson brand products
According to Bodge, you're better off buying certain name brands like Dyson elsewhere, as its rarely, if ever, included in discounts.
Skip: Apple products
You'll also be hard-pressed to find discounted Apple products, Bodge said.
Buy: Handbags
You'll find loads of designer brand handbags and purses at Macy's, many of which come at a discounted price, various experts said.
Buy: Linens and towels
"Macy's has a variety of offerings , thread counts and brands on everything you need from sheets and duvets to towels and bath mats," Sara Skirboll, shopping and trends expert at RetailMeNot, told Business Insider. "Plus, January is one of the best times of year to buy, so look out for deeper discounts."
Buy: Baby clothes
Outfitting a litte one who is constantly growing does not come cheap, but Macy's tends to have tons of bargain clothes for babies and toddlers , according to the couponing site The Krazy Coupon Lady .
Buy: Exclusive home goods collections
Skirboll of RetailMeNot recommended browsing Macy's wide selection of exclusive home collections from big names like Martha Stewart, which you won't be able to find elsewhere.
"Because these items are not offered at other retailers, one of the best things to check out are the Macy exclusive brands, like Martha Stewart and the Hotel Collection," she said. "There are 23 different brands and they cover a wide variety of categories from home decor and accessories to apparel and accessories and more. I love their Hotel Collection and own four of their mattress toppers."

The good thing about packing playsuits like these is that you can easily mix and match them with other outfits to create new looks.
21 – Must-Have Cruise Trip Accessories
Keeping the latest trends in mind, you must pack with you a straw hat and either a straw or bamboo bag. Both these accessories give off those cruise vibes that we love and you can easily pair them with any outfit for a nice, relaxed day on the cruise. The spacious bags are also great to store other cruise essentials like sun-screens. And if they’re big enough, you can even carry your cover-up in it.
20 – First Day of Cruise Outfit
On the day of departure, the outfit should be casual because throughout the day you will be exploring around the cruise, and taking some good pictures for the gram. The first-night dinner is also served casually, so there is no need to wear anything formal on the first day. Here’s a complete Smart Casual Attire Guide for Women.
19 – Beach Day Outfit
A Beach outfit is a must-have. On most cruises, you’ll be spending an entire day on the sea, so you must make sure to pack up a beach outfit. Choosing the right color according to your style is important because you don’t want to have a bad picture day at the beach. If you’re Accessorizing with jewelry, it will definitely complete your look and if it’s a chilly destination then you would want to keep some cover-ups or kimonos.

Cruise port stops are great, also getting some time for shopping. As there are some spots to explore a new place and shop around. Outfit for shopping day must be on-point. If it is a sunny day, You can also replace these jeans with denim shorts.
17 – Jumpsuit
We all enjoy wearing jumpsuits on vacation because they are extremely travel-friendly. It’s only one piece of clothing that will make you look stunning while also keeping your luggage light. Jumpsuits come in so many designs and fabrics. But I would advice that you don’t pick one with linen fabric, so you don’t need to iron it again and again. Here are some of my personal favorite Jumpsuits Outfits.
16 – Swimsuit
Swimsuits are what you’ll be needing the most on the cruise. Pool parties happen all the time on the cruise, Always bring a minimum of two swimsuits because it might take some time to dry the other one, so just keep an extra one. If you are still not sure that this is your style, then you can wear a floral cover-up to carry it according to your style.

Q. What kind of clothes do you wear on a cruise?
There is no particular restriction when it comes to cruise outfits, so just wear things that you’re most comfortable with – whether it’s jeans, skirts, or maxi dresses. Of course, if you want to make the most of your trip and take some memorable pictures then keep a mix of different types of casual and semi-formal clothes so you can try something new every day.
Q. Can I wear jeans on a cruise?
Most cruises don’t allow jeans on the formal dinners, so it is important to check this with your cruise management before you leave. For longer cruise trips, jeans and shorts are acceptable for daywear and informal gatherings.
Q. Should I carry a purse on a cruise?
Once you’re on board, you probably won’t need your wallet so it should ideally be stored safely in your rooms. Carrying a purse or handbad is completely your choice – if you feel like it complements your outfit or that you can safely carry it around, then do go for it. Many women also prefer carrying handbags on cruises to store items they might need like makeup, sunscreen, perfumes, etc.
Q. Do I have to attend the cruise gala night?
Attending the formal nights is not necessary so you can skip it if you want. But I would recommend that you attend it at least once to enjoy that experience. After all, you paid for the cruise, why not make the most of your time there?
