There are so many reasons to consider swapping your liquid shampoo for a shampoo bar. Firstly, solid shampoos don’t require any plastic, making them a more environmentally friendly choice than bottled shampoos. They’re also cost-effective since one shampoo bar typically provides at least as many washes as two large bottles of liquid shampoo.

Avid travelers have even more reasons to prefer a solid hair wash option since it won’t count against the TSA’s 3-1-1 liquid rule for carry-on baggage. Many shampoo bars can double as conditioners, body wash bars, or even soap for washing clothing — and multi-use items are always ideal for travel since they cut down on expended luggage real estate.

Best Overall

J.r. liggett's all-natural shampoo bar.

It’s long-lasting, multitasking, and non-stripping.

It’s a bit tough to grip.

This vegan, sulfate-free pick by J.R. Liggett’s tops our list for its versatility (and therefore travel-friendliness) above all else. Suitable for all hair types, the 100 percent vegetable oil formulation doesn’t strip the natural oils from your hair and naturally conditions, eliminating the need for a conditioner in most people (AKA one less item to pack). The multi-tasker can also be used as a body soap, a lubricant for shaving, or for hand washing clothing items such as socks and underwear, making it an ideal companion for camping trips or other occasions where luggage real estate is very limited.

Formulated with a blend of olive oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, and castor oil, the bar lathers quickly, cleans well and rinses out easily. It’s gentle but tough, eliminating built-up sebum and promoting a healthy shine. There is no added fragrance, which will be appreciated by those with sensitive skin types, though there is a mild scent from the included essential oils (rose, lavender and spearmint). The long-lasting bar is equal to approximately 24 ounces of liquid shampoo.

The Details: 3.5 ounces | All hair types

Best for Dry Hair

Kitsch castor oil nourishing shampoo bar.

Kitsch

It’s super nourishing and hydrating.

It may leave a bit of residue.

Dry, damaged, or broken hair will find nourishing relief in this hydrating, pleasantly scented shampoo bar. Free from harsh surfactants that can dry out and further damage hair, the balancing and calming castor oil formula is great for everyday cleansing or a double lather on extra dirty scalps. It’s tough enough to get rid of pesky flakes, and leaves hair feeling moisturized and refreshed while soothing itchy scalps. It’s also formulated with strengthening ricinoleic acid, which stimulates blood flow to the scalp and supports hair growth.

The Details: 3.2 ounces | All hair types

Best for Oily Hair

Odacité 552m soap free shampoo bar.

The soap-free bar leaves greasy roots super clean.

It can be drying.

Dirt, excess oil, and product build-up are no match for this tough shampoo bar, which delivers deep cleaning results. Even if you’re an infrequent hair washer who piles on hair products, this bar can thoroughly cleanse your scalp and leave it feeling fresh. Still, the soap-free formula, made with hydrating coconut, argan, and castor oils, is safe for use on color-treated hair. It works into a pleasant lather and leaves hair feeling restored and soft to the touch. We especially love that it comes in two sizes, the smaller of which is perfect for short trips.

The Details: 3.7 or 1.25 ounces | Oily hair

Best for Thick Hair

Davines love shampoo bar.

It has a lovely floral scent.

It breaks easily.

If your hair tends to get a bit frizzy, consider washing it with this solid shampoo by Davines. Formulated with thick, coarse, and frizzy hair types in mind, this lavender-scented, conditioning shampoo bar works to bring control and softness to your strands. It hydrates and adds shine, while helping to calm frizz. Effective yet gentle, this olive extract-enriched bar works into a nice lather and distributes well across the scalp, leaving your hair feeling cleansed and moisturized.

The Details: 3.5 ounces | Thick, coarse, or frizzy hair

Best for Damaged Hair

L'occitane intensive repair solid shampoo.

It leaves hair feeling soft and fresh.

The floral and powdery scent is not for everyone.

If you have damaged or brittle hair, we recommend this softening shampoo bar, which is designed to nurse your strands back to health. It’s formulated with an intensive repair cocktail, which features an anti-breakage blend of natural essential oils including angelica, ylang-ylang, sweet orange, lavender, and geranium.

Furthermore, oat amino acids work to repair and improve the quality of your hair, while sunflower oil leaves it soft, supple, and nourished. The result is healthier and shinier looking and feeling hair. We also appreciate that it’s housed in 100 percent recyclable cardboard packaging.

The Details: 2.1 ounces | Damaged hair

Best for Fine Hair

Hibar volumize shampoo.

The unique shape makes it comfortable to grip.

The lather isn’t very rich.

Fine hair can tend to fall flat. For those looking to boost their strands with a bit of oomph, we like HiBar’s volumizing, silicone-free shampoo bar. It uses fermented date fruit extract to lift fine hair from the roots, while rice amino acids, rice protein, and vitamin B5 work to add body and bounce. We especially love that this uniquely-shaped soap-free bar (which lasts at least as long as two big plastic bottles of liquid shampoo) is designed to fit more comfortably in your hand and give you a better grip.

Best for Curly Hair

Ethique curl-defining solid shampoo bar.

The durable bar effectively cleans excess oil.

The scent isn’t for everyone.

Define and nourish curly or wavy hair while adding softness and bounce with this solid shampoo. It gently cleanses curly strands without drying them out or adding any frizz. The secret is in the nourishing ingredient blend including shea butter, betaine, and cocoa butter — and formulated without sulfates, silicones, waxes or drying alcohols. The bar works into a lovely, thick lather that wafts of fresh lemongrass. It’s also safe for use on color-treated tresses.

The Details: 3.88 or 0.53 ounces | Curly or wavy hair

Best Organic

The earthling co. shampoo bar.

It comes in six scents, plus a fragrance-free option.

It doesn’t last quite as long as our other picks.

This richly foaming shampoo bar is packed with hair-loving certified organic ingredients. Marshmallow root works to detangle hair while locking in moisture. Meanwhile, coconut oil and jojoba oil add even more moisture and shine (without flattening hair) and vitamin B5 works to strengthen strands. A guar bean-derived conditioning agent adds softness while providing anti-static properties to hair. This bar, which lasts an estimated 50 to 75 washes, comes in six mouthwatering scents (think: vanilla coconut or citrus sun) as well as a fragrance-free option, which is ideal for those with sensitive skin (or noses!).

The Details: 3 ounces | All hair types

Best for Sensitive Skin

Kitsch ultra sensitive shampoo & body wash bar.

The fragrance-free bar can also be used on your body.

The S-shape makes it tough to fit in standard travel containers

Fragrances can irritate sensitive skin and scalps, which is why Kitsch’s multi-use body and shampoo bar is formulated without any fragrance. The vegan, cruelty-free product is also free of harsh chemicals, parabens, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, and colorants. In fact, the gentle bar has a super short five-item ingredient list, which is centered around strand-strengthening castor oil that helps to nourish your hair from roots to the ends. One bar can substitute two bottles of liquid shampoo, and it’s color-safe.

Best for Color-treated Hair

Love beauty and planet shampoo bar.

The budget-friendly product keeps color-treated hair vibrant.

It may leave some residue behind in your hair.

Excessive shampooing can dull your color-treated hair color. To preserve your color in its most vibrant form, we recommend this Brazilian murumuru butter and Bulgarian rose shampoo bar by Love Beauty and Planet. It’s deeply moisturizing to help soften and protect hair. The vegan, paraben-free, silicone-free and sulfate-free shampoo bar is infused with nourishing coconut oil. Further elevating your shampooing experience: the natural floral rose scent blends beautifully with fragrant red berries.

The Details: 4 ounces | All hair types

Tips for Buying Shampoo Bars

Consider your hair type.

Various hair types will benefit from different ingredients, so many shampoo bars are formulated with specific hair types in mind. If you dye or highlight your hair, be sure to pick a shampoo bar that’s labeled color-safe. Fine hair can benefit from volumizing formulas, while dry, damaged, or brittle hair needs extra nourishment and hydration. Some repairing shampoos can even help heal damaged hair. Still, many solid shampoos are safe to use on all hair types.

Think about storage

When traveling with a shampoo bar, you’ll want to consider the size and shape of your product in order to pick an appropriate travel container. In order to prevent any leakage on your belongings in transit, you’ll want to pick a shampoo bar that fits safely in a travel container and seals completely. (Luckily, since shampoo bars don’t count against TSA liquid limits, you won’t have to consider size as it relates to the 3-1-1 rule ).

When not in use, it’s best to keep your shampoo bar in a dry area to increase longevity. When in the shower, you can store it on a soap dish or storage rack with a slatted or perforated base away from water droplets and steam. You can purchase a leak-proof travel soap case to transport your shampoo bar.

It’s best to follow the instructions listed on your specific product, but in general, there are two ways to use a shampoo bar. You can rub it between your wet hands to create a lather, and then transfer that lather to your hair and massage your scalp as usual. Or, you can apply the bar directly to your wet hair creating a few streaks. Then, put down the bar and use your hair to work the product into a lather and wash as usual.

Each product varies slightly depending on the weight and effectiveness. On average, one shampoo bar should last about as long as two large bottles of liquid shampoo.

Since many shampoo bars contain no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or silicone, they tend to be less drying and taxing on your hair than other shampoos that contain these ingredients. Still, it depends on your hair type and the specific ingredients in your shampoo bar.

Water is hair color’s worst enemy, so the best thing you can do to safeguard your new hue is simply to minimize how often you wash your hair. That being said, when you do suds up, using a color-safe shampoo is critical to preserving your temporary, permanent, or semi-permanent hair color while nourishing your tresses and keeping your scalp healthy .

Specially formulated to not strip color molecules, color-friendly shampoo is a surefire way to keep your strands shiny and vibrant, while also stretching out how long you can go in between DIY dye jobs or salon appointments. Whether you have highlights, balayage or an all over tint, Celebrity colorist Mark Debolt says that if you're serious about keeping your hair in its best condition then investing in a shampoo designed specifically for dyed hair is essential.

We conducted research on the best shampoos for colored hair and got to work testing them out on blondes, reds, brunettes and every shade in between. We evaluated each option on their active ingredients, texture, value and targeted results . After using them for weeks at a time, we combined our favorites with stylist-recommended products to create this list.

Why Trust Byrdie

Best overall, k18 peptide prep ph maintenance shampoo.

Helps repair damaged hair

Only a small amount is needed

Subtle citrus scent

May be too heavy for those with thin hair

This shampoo took the top spot because of its ability to i mprove everything from dryness, damage, shine, static and color vibrancy. We saw a difference after just one wash and it only got better as we continued to use it. It uses the patented K18 peptide to limit protein loss while washing and maintain each individual strand’s strength, resulting in an overall healthier and thicker looking head of hair. The pH in the formula was created to align with our own hair and scalp’s natural pH to keep the scalp’s protective barrier functioning and prevent the cuticles from swelling.

This shampoo uses fewer but more effective ingredients to gently cleanse your hair while simultaneously improving its health and appearance.

Who It’s For

We especially loved how it reversed the negative effectives of washing your hair in hard water and the toll pollution takes on our hair. This shampoo offers a long-term solution to getting and keeping your hair in its optimum condition.

Key Ingredients: K18 peptide, cocamidopropyl betaine | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Citrus | Size: 8.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

It leaves behind not even a trace of residue , so you’re never left with any build-up. Suitable for all hair types, it is also safe to use on keratin treated hair and extensions.

Who It’s For

While this shampoo works for straight and curly hair alike, the fact that it doesn’t leave any residue makes it the ideal choice for those who find their hair gets greasy quickly. Switching up your shampoo for this option means you may be able to stretch the amount of days in between washes —therefore saving you time and lessening the amount of heat styling on your hair.

Key Ingredients: Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate and sodium cocoyl glycinate | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Mild | Size: 8.4 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best Bond Builder

Olaplex no. 4 bond maintenance shampoo.

Read Full Review : The Olaplex Bond Maintenance System Kit Transformed My Hair

Effective formula

Lathers well

Could be more hydrating

Olaplex is a mainstay in the hair coloring world; there’s both a reparative in-salon treatment that many colorists use while coloring, as well as a beloved at-home version. The shampoo offers similar benefits, working to rebuild the hair bonds that are broken during the color process so that strands stay ultra-strong and healthy. That alone earns it top honors on this list, but we can’t fail to mention that while it’s sulfate-free—essential criteria for any type of color-safe shampoo—it still foams up nicely and rinses completely cleanly.

We tried out Olaplex’s Bond Maintenance System Kit (which includes the Bond Maintenance Shampoo along with the Bond Maintenance Conditioner and Hair Perfector mask ) and gave it a perfect five-star rating. The shampoo thoroughly cleansed our hair without leaving it feeling stripped and kept our hair feeling fresher, longer.

Key Ingredients: Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Original | Size: 3.3 or 8.5 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Those with thick and long hair who feel like they go through shampoo at a rapid rate will love how much bang you get for your buck with this product . Not only is it one of the more affordable options on our list but it also comes in one of the biggest bottles.

The minty-rosemary scent is fresh and invigorating—great for sleepy mornings—and we’d be remiss not to mention the affordable price , too.

This shampoo was created especially for those with fine hair . Not only does it help in adding some extra volume to thin hair , it also strengthens the strands to prevent further breakage from coloring.

Ouai thick hair shampoo.

Those lucky enough to have been born with thick hair will know that while it’s great for creating volume, it can also be hard work come wash day. Key Ingredients: Marshmallow root extract, shea butter, and avocado oil | Hair Type: Thick | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Floral | Size: 10 or 32 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Natural Hair

Girl+hair cleanse+ moisturizing shampoo.

Rich, foaming texture

Soothes the scalp

Applicator bottle gets right to the root

Not everyone may like the minty scent

Natural hair requires a whole different kind of washing and styling protocol, so for colored kinky, coiled hair, reach for this mega-gentle cleanser. It starts as water, turns into a rich foam, and leaves curls, which can be innately drier and more prone to damage than straight strands with plenty of moisture . In short, it doesn't strip natural oils or color. There's also shea butter and tea tree oil in the mix , and it'll help nourish both your locks and your scalp.

Who's It For

In addition to being the ideal option for natural hair, this gentle shampoo is the perfect choice for those with sensitive scalps that find regular shampoos cause them irritation. The formula was created with delicate skin in mind, making it safe for anyone with eczema, psoriasis, or dry, flaky skin.

Key Ingredients: Shea butter and tea tree oil | Hair Type: Curly, coily | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Minty | Size: 10.1 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Damaged Hair

Living proof restore shampoo.

Smooths hair

May contribute to buildup over time

The proprietary ingredient this brand relies on—a “ Patented Healthy Hair Molecule ”—was created by MIT scientists , so you know it’s going to be legit. The formula aims to restore dry and damaged hair cuticles right away while helping to ward off future damage. Yes, please. Not to mention that it also repels dirt and oil so that you can stretch out washes further , always a boon when you have colored hair.

We have all been told by our stylists to wash our hair less to avoid further damage , but this is easier said than done. Whether you are already on a once a week cycle or have been trying to extend the life of your blow dry— this shampoo is so effective at removing dirt, sweat, oil, pollution, and buildup that it is just the product you need if you are looking to take a break from washing and styling your hair so often.

Key Ingredients: Proprietary amino cleansing complex, glutamic acid-based emollient, and phytantriol | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Original | Size: 8 or 24 ouncs | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Blonde Hair

Amika bust your brass shampoo.

Boosts and preserves blonde shades

Doesn't stain skin or bathroom

Boosts hydration and shine

Strong scent

Blondes are more susceptible to dealing with all kinds of color fading and changes, namely unwanted brassy tones that can make cooler blonde shades appear dingy.  Purple shampoo can instantly fix any brassiness , and after testing 26 different purple shampoos, Amika's is one of our favorites. This violet-based shampoo works to instantly counteract those orange and brassy undertones and leaves any cool blonde shade refreshed and revived. It’s a great choice for those with gray hair, too. While a lot of purple shampoos tend be drying and hard to wash out, this one was easy to rinse out, left our hair moisturized, and didn't stain our skin or bathroom.

For those truly dedicated to keeping their blonde tones intact then this shampoo is worth the investment. It comes in four different sizes from a tiny travel-sized version to an XL bottle, - meaning you can take it on trips away while also having your bathroom stocked up to ensure your highlights stay luminous.

Key Ingredients: Quinoa protein and plant butters | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Original | Size: 8 or 33.8 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Byrdie / Elise Wang

Best Splurge

Oribe gold lust repair & restore shampoo.

Nourishing formula

Could be more moisturizing

Gentle and reparative , this rejuvenating shampoo helps combat split ends , dryness, and breakage and even addresses a dry and flaky scalp. It’s splurgy, yes, but the brand’s Bio-Restorative Complex and Signature Complex— packed with ingredients like biotin, plant collagen, and niacinamide —make it well worth the investment. Plus, it smells incredible , thanks to bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood.

If you are in the market for a self-gift then look no further. This rich shampoo is definitely an indulgence but the dreamy scent will make your bathroom feel like a luxury salon. Treat yourself and your hair to this revitalizing option that will always have you looking forward to washing your hair.

Best Dry Shampoo

Moroccanoil dry shampoo for dark tones.

Not for very oily hair or scalp

As we said, the longer you can go without washing your hair, the longer your color will last. That's where the beauty of a great dry shampoo , like this guy, comes in. It uses rice starch to do the dry shampoo thing—remove excess oil—but it's also infused with argan oil and leaves the hair hydrated and shiny, not dull. This variant is made for dark tones (so don't worry, it won't leave behind a chalky residue), but there's also an option for light tones with subtle violet pigments that knock out brassiness and keep your blonde fresh .

Everyone can benefit from having a can of dry shampoo on hand. Whether it’s to get a couple of extra days in between washing or to create an emergency hair refresh after receiving a last minute invite, dry shampoo is a hair care essential . The good news is that as you just need a light spray on the roots - one can is likely to last you a long time .

Key Ingredients: Argan oil | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Original | Size: 1.7 or 5.4 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Oily Hair

Key Ingredients: Mint leaf | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Mint | Size: 13.5 and 33.8 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Red Hair

Redken color extend magnetics shampoo.

Supports color-retention

Conditioning

Doesn't strip hair

Too much product leaves hair oily

Shades of red were all you saw on your social media feeds this year. To keep the red color at its full vibrancy , it is important to invest in your hair. This shampoo multitasks by gently lathering and conditioning your hair , so your color is always protected. And because it supports color retention , it means fewer visits to the hair salon and more time spent enjoying your fire-y hair.

Anyone looking to achieve a salon style finish from the comfort of their own home will love how the RCT protein complex in this shampoo nourishes the hair from root to tip to leave it looking healthier and stronger, while amino acids seal in color to limit fading.

Key Ingredients: Protein complex, hydrolyzed soy protein | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Cherry | Size: 33.8 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Best for Brunettes

Redken color extend toning shampoo.

Neutralizes brassiness

Stains fingers if not wearing protective gloves

Think of blue shampoo in the same light as purple shampoo: It counteracts any brassiness, except on brown hair. On the color well, orange is the opposite of blue, so blue works to neutralize the unwanted tones in your hair . This shampoo from Redkin is one of the best blue shampoos on the market simply because of its benefits outside of color correcting. If you want a shampoo that also strengthens and improves hair health, this is your best bet.

Luscious brown hair is one of the most sought after colors around and while it may be less damaging than going blonde, maintaining the richness of the color can be just as tricky.  The blue pigments keep brunette shades looking fresh while the color-maintenance technology maintains that newly dyed appearance for longer.

Key Ingredients: Hydrolyzed wheat protein | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Scent: Original | Size: 10.1 or 33.8 ounces | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Overall, our favorite when it comes to maintaining color-treated hair has to be the K18 Peptide Prep Smoothing pH Maintenance Color-Safe Shampoo due to its innovative peptide formula. Its unparalleled ability to repair the damaged hair bonds broken during the coloring process make it a must have. What to Look For in Shampoos for Colored Hair

  • Color-Safe Formulas: When it comes to shampooing color-treated hair, Debolt stresses the importance of only using a product designed to prolong the life of color-treated hair. This will ensure that there aren’t any potentially dulling or stripping ingredients in the formula. Debolt also recommends avoiding some sulfates, though it’s worth noting that not all are necessarily bad for your color. “There is often conversation about sulfates in hair care, but it’s a complex topic because there are different grades of sulfates,” he says. “Salon-professional hair care often contains sulfates that are perfectly okay for color-treated hair, while drugstore brands contain harsher sulfates that can remove color.” Our advice? Look for sulfate-free options unless the formula is recommended directly by your colorist. We love the affordable Color Wow free-from formula .
  • Avoid "Clarifying" and "Detoxifying" Formulas: Debolt also says to avoid shampoos that are labeled as “clarifying” or “detoxifying.” “These products often contain ingredients that will remove artificial pigment from the hair,” he says. Another ingredient to look out for is chamomile, which he says will also remove pigment from color-treated hair. The R+Co Gemstone Color Shampoo is great for preserving color with a vitamin-enriched formula.
  • Hydrating Ingredients: Any type of coloring will more than likely leave your hair feeling drier so in addition to using a suitable conditioner applying a shampoo with hydrating ingredients can help to replenish any lost moisture. Look for ingredients like glycerin , shea butter, argan oil, and avocado oil. For instance, Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo has shea butter and avocado oil.

Wash your hair as infrequently as possible to preserve color. Two to three times per week should suffice, letting your hair's natural oils condition color-treated tresses.

Yes. It's a great option for color-treated hair, absorbing excess scalp oils in between washes. Certain dry shampoo formulas can also brighten your color.

Avoid any hair care products with sulfates. You should also avoid anything that lists alcohols (ethanol or propanol) as an ingredient in order to safely style color-treated hair.

Keep your 'do from fading fast with the Tresemmé shampoo and matching conditioner that best helped retain color in the GH Beauty Lab's most recent test — the pair was also the consumer tester favorite. Though a sulfate formula, h air samples showed the least color change after 20 washes and 10 hours of UV exposure in Lab evaluations . Plus, this color-safe drugstore duo was the most affordable option we tested. Made with frizz-smoothing keratin and marula oil, the formula had testers saying it "felt creamy and rich like expensive salon-quality products."

A GH Beauty Lab go-to, this bargain-price sulfate-free L'Oréal Paris formula is made to both preserve color and soften strands. In a consumer study, the majority of women who used the shampoo and matching conditioner found that it helped hair color stay "pure" after four weeks of use , Lab data evaluation found. Just note that some online reviewers who have damaged hair found it drying.

Dry, brittle ends are a risk you take with dye jobs. Thankfully, Davine's NouNou shampoo aims to deeply nourish dehydrated hair while offering a "rich, creamy lather," according to celebrity hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein . Color-treated (especially bleached) hair tends to oxidize more than non-color-treated hair. Given that, Rubenstein says properly nourished, hydrated and moisturized hair helps color oxidize less. She recommends Davines because it makes hair feel "cared for, clean and not stripped of any natural oil ."

This reasonably priced protein-infused shampoo and its conditioner counterpart from Nexxus win the praises of color pros thanks to its ability to remove product buildup without stripping color . "It prevents fading on any color-treated hair and maintains hair health," says New York City colorist Patrick Kyle . One Amazon reviewer wrote that it takes a decent amount of shampoo to get a good lather, however.

Keep color protection top of mind with a shampoo that celebrity hairstylist Michael Dueñas raves "helps strengthen the hair internally and closes the cuticle, ensuring that your color lasts longer with less fading." The castor oil ingredient leaves hair feeling incredibly soft and shiny, he adds. It's "also gentle with cleansing and retains your hair's natural moisture, ensuring you don’t strip away your artificial color ," says Dueñas. While online reviewers enjoyed the formula, one added that it dried out their hair slightly.

From a brand created specifically for color care, this Pureology shampoo and its conditioner formulations contain proteins and botanical oils to fortify and nourish dry, damaged strands . "I couldn't believe how soft and lush my hair felt after using these, even right after it was bleached," marvels GH's beauty director April Franzino . The shampoo comes with a higher price tag, though we think the hefty amount of product keeps this at a good value.

Great for keeping her highlighted hair looking fresh, Franzino also enjoys this color-safe shampoo for how well it leaves her hair feeling clean but not dehydrated . "Plus, the scent is amazing and makes showering feel luxurious!" she adds about its peachy smell with tropical notes. Paired with its companion conditioner, the brand claims that the duo gently cleanses colored hair. That said, some shoppers had trouble getting it to lather well, which led to shampooing twice for a more satisfying cleanse.

For a luxe sulfate-free option that increases vibrancy, check out Shu Uemura's color-protecting shampoo and conditioner , recommended by Meri Kate O'Connor , a colorist at Cooper Salon in West Hollywood, CA. "These have refining lipids that help to protect the cortex of the hair, where the color goes, so your shade lasts longer — and hair is left shiny and soft ," she explains. Those with dry scalps reported online that it felt less moisturizing, so oily hair types may benefit more.

Procter & Gamble Supreme Color Protect Shampoo

Created by the gold standard anti-dandruff brand, this Head & Shoulders shampoo and conditioner created for color-treated hair both contain the flake-fighting active ingredient pyrithione zinc . "Not only is dandruff at bay, [but] my hair is [also] shiny, smooth and smells wonderful!" reports one reviewer. Adding nourishment to the equation, the formula combines manuka honey and argan oil. However, online reviewers with curly hair — kinky textures, especially — noted that it wasn't as effective at detangling.

To keep hair color from fading, O'Connor turns to this pair from Goldwell, a collection specially tailored to smooth strands. If you want to make coarse or textured hair silky, she says the shampoo and conditioner are infused with keratin to add extra smoothness and shine. Oily hair types: It's worth keeping in mind that a few online reviewers reported that it left a greasy residue behind.

Matrix Total Results Unbreak My Blonde Shampoo

Total Results Unbreak My Blonde Shampoo

If you're on the search for shampoo for colored hair, opt for this stylist favorite. Celebrity colorist and Matrix brand ambassador Rachel Bodt recommends the My Blonde collection to all her clients who have gotten any sort of chemical lightening service, not just blondes. "Unbreak My Blonde is a three-part, shampoo, conditioning and leave-in treatment, meant to revive hair damaged by chemical lightening — leaving hair soft and shiny. " The only con: an Ulta reviewer who has fine, thin hair says it felt too heavy and hydrating.

How we test color-safe shampoos

linebreak

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab tests shampoos for colored hair alongside each brand's matching conditioners , putting the pairs through a number of rigorous evaluations to see how well they perform. During our most recent test, Lab scientists prescreened over 160 shampoo and conditioner duos , narrowing them down to the top 10 formulas .

In the Lab, our chemists performed repeated fade-resistance testing on human hair swatches to mimic real-world conditions, including shampooing, conditioning, blow-drying and repeated exposure to UV light. They also distributed the label-masked shampoos and conditioners to consumer testers around the country, who used the products for two weeks, then evaluated the product's attributes, the look of their color and the feel of their hair after use.

✔️ Opt for strengthening ingredients. Look for ingredients like citric acid, which strengthens bonds weakened from the hair-lightening process. Bodt recommends Matrix Unbreak My Blonde collection for its ability to revive damaged hair.

✔️ Look for "sulfate-free" formulas. Sulfates sud the hair and cause pigment loss, says Bodt. When you have heavily bleached hair you will want to incorporate something that has a bonding treatment or protein and moisture.

Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo fuchsia shampoo bottle

Nexxus Color Assure Shampoo

Ulta Beauty

Why It's Worth It: Imagine washing your hair (and conditioning it, of course) 40 times after coloring it and still seeing the same vibrancy and richness after stepping out of the shower that 40th time. It seems far-fetched, but it's exactly what this shampoo can do. The formula is centered around elastin protein and quinoa, a combo that helps hold onto your color's vividness. And while it won't double as a conditioner, it does include a conditioning polymer to leave hair soft, not dry.

Editor Tip: The proteins are packed with the same amino acids lost during the coloring process.

Who It's Good For: People with weak or breakage-prone hair.

Best Drugstore: L'Oréal Paris EverPure Moisture Shampoo

L'Oréal Paris Everpure Moisture Shampoo in metallic purple tube

L'Oréal Paris

L'Oréal Paris Everpure Moisture Shampoo

Amazon (Shampoo + Conditioner)

Why It's Worth It: When it comes to drugstore darlings for color-treated hair, we can't fail to mention L'Oréal Paris's EverPure Moisture Shampoo — and New York City-based colorist Nikki Ferrara agrees. While it's powerful enough to remove product buildup at the roots, this gentle formula lathers beautifully and is infused with rosemary, juniper berry, and jasmine for an uplifting shower experience that gives higher-end formulas a run for their money. And, since it actively hydrates hair, it leaves strands with impressive softness and shine.

Editor Tip: For especially damaged hair post-coloring, try the EverPure Bond Strengthening Shampoo to strengthen weakened bonds.

Who It's Good For: People with dry hair, or those looking for extra shine.

Best for Fine Hair: Kérastase Chroma Absolu Shampoo

Kérastase Chroma Absolu Shampoo in clear bottle with silver lid

Kérastase Chroma Absolu Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: The Kérastase Chroma Absolu Shampoo is a must for anyone who colors their hair. It utilizes a trifecta of acids — amino , lactic , and tartaric — to target and smooth hair damage while retaining color and keeping brassy tones at bay. And it's surprisingly lightweight, making it a good match for fine or thinning hair, and even contains Centella asiatic a (also known as cica) to help hair recover post-treatment.

Editor Tip: This silicone-free option is weightless on hair and provides intensive moisture replenishment, so it's great for thick and fine hair types alike.

Who It's Good For: People looking for volume.

Best for Dry Hair: Fekkai Technician Color Shampoo

Fekkai Technician Color Shampoo in pink bottle

Fekkai Technician Color Shampoo

Anthropologie

Why It's Worth It: Dry hair and color preservation just don't mesh, so plump your brittlest strands by lathering up with Fekkai's Technician Color Shampoo. It contains a slew of conditioning, hair-softening ingredients like plum seed oil, sunflower sprout extract, and argan oil that moisturize the hair cuticle. The results: a major shine and vibrancy boost.

Editor Tip: According to Clairol, cool-toned brunettes can use this shampoo to diminish brassy, orange colors, too.

Who It's Good For: Anyone with dry, brittle, or damaged hair.

Best for Blonde and Gray Hair: Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Hair Shampoo

Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Hair Shampoo: A purple bottle with white text on a light gray background

Clairol Professional

Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Hair Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Let's be real: blondes, especially those who aren't naturally that color, have more maintenance than fun. In order for gray and blonde hair types to keep brassiness at bay, we recommend using a purple shampoo like Clairol's Professional Shimmer Lights Hair Shampoo. Its ultraviolet color neutralizes dull yellow tones for an icier, cooler finish after each wash. It doesn't hurt that this budget-friendly find costs less than $20, either.

Who It's Good For: Anyone with blonde or gray hair.

Best for Frizzy Hair: Joico Colorful Anti-Fade Shampoo

Joico Colorful Anti-Fade Shampoo in pink and silver bottle

Joico Colorful Anti-Fade Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: We generally aren't "anti" much, but when it comes to our beautiful color fading, we're ready to put up a fight. Thankfully, Joico's Colorful Anti-Fade Shampoo will do most of the work for us. Nourishing ingredients like camellia oil, rosehip oil, pomegranate, and hydrolyzed keratin repair each hair strand from the inside out and maintain the brilliance of your new hue for up to eight weeks, the brand claims.

Editor Tip: The ingredients are housed in liposomes, which release them throughout the day for a lasting effect.

Who It's Good For: Anyone who wants to stretch out the time between salon visits.

Best Luxury: Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo

Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo in blue and tan bottle

Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Chicago-based hairstylist Alex Brown counts this among her all-time favorite color-safe shampoos. "It works to repair dry, damaged hair by depositing keratin back into the broken pockets of the hair strands that are caused by bleach, heat, and other chemicals," she says, adding it leaves your hair feeling super soft and nourished.

Editor Tip: Virtue's Full Shampoo , a "gentle, non-sulfate shampoo which gives hair volume and has the brand's patented Alpha Keratin 60ku to keep hair looking healthy and shiny," if you're looking for a volumizing formula.

Who It's Good For: People who've gotten especially damaging color services, like bleach.

Best Vegan Shampoo: Pureology Strength Cure Sulfate Free Shampoo

Pureology Strength Cure Sulfate Free Shampoo in bright blue bottle

Pureology Strength Cure Sulfate Free Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: The real deal, this won a 2022 Best of Beauty Award . The key players at hand are keravis — a plant-based protein to strengthen — and a UV-filtering antioxidant called astaxanthin . If those sound unfamiliar, don't sweat it: All you need to know is that they'll mend breakage and fortify your strands, even if you're working with bleached hair.

Editor Tip: The scent is sweet and juicy, thanks to notes of raspberry and peach.

Who It's Good For: Those looking for a vegan formula.

Best for Breakage: Briogeo Color Me Brilliant Shampoo & Conditioner

Briogeo Color Me Brilliant Mushroom + Bamboo Color Protect Shampoo in white and sky blue tube

Briogeo Color Me Brilliant Mushroom + Bamboo Color Protect Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: People who've undergone color treatments, keratin treatments, or relaxers can benefit from this shampoo — whatever their hair type. This formula, which includes a Color Protect Primer to minimize heat-induced color loss, utilizes powerful, plant-derived ingredients such as turkey tail mushroom, bamboo leaf extract, and radish root ferment to preserve color. Meanwhile, a blend of sunflower seed, linseed, and apricot kernel oils promotes a glossy, healthy finish.

Editor Tip: Pair it with the Briogeo Color Protect Primer to minimize heat-induced color loss.

Who It's Good For: People who color hair in addition to other chemical treatments.

Best for Sun Damage: Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color

Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color in dark burgundy bottle

Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color

Why It's Worth It: Oribe bottles don't simply sit pretty in your shower. Danita Hampton , a North Carolina-based hairstylist and Covet & Mane Lead Educator, calls out this shampoo, which lives up to its name and maintains the vibrancy of your color. It "ends up saving you money at the salon because you don't have to go back for color as much," she explains. (Hard to argue with that.) It also uses two modes to defend hair against UV-induced fading.

Editor Tip: The matching conditioner contains glycerin to push moisture back into fried hair and protects hair against premature fading, Hampton says.

Who It's Good For: People who spend time outside.

Best Silicone-Free: Pantene Illuminating Color Care Sulfate Free Shampoo

Pantene Illuminating Color Care Sulfate Free Shampoo in floral bottle with gold cap

Pantene Illuminating Color Care Sulfate Free Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: The hero of this formula is provitamin B5 , also known as panthenol — which has had promising clinical results in terms of increasing hydration and fortifying weak strands. (Plus, it's free of both silicones and sulfates.) What's left is simply smooth, shiny hair.

Editor Tip: The scent of white florals and juicy citrus doubles as aromatherapy.

Who It's Good For: People looking for extra shine without the help of silicones.

Best for Chemically-Treated Hair: Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo in clear bottle

Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Few formulas come close to the bond-repairing powers of this shampoo, which is why it earned an Allure Best of Beauty Award back in 2021 and, more recently, a Readers' Choice Award in 2023. It is spiked with Olaplex's star ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate , to repair broken disulfide bonds at the molecular level. The results: shinier, smoother hair with intense color vibrancy after each and every wash.

Editor Tip: You can find bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimeleate in every Olaplex product, not just this.

Who It's Good For: Those who get chemical treatments in addition to color services.

Best Scent: Loma Hair Care Moisturizing Shampoo

Loma Hair Care Moisturizing Shampoo in blue bottle with white cap

Loma Hair Care Moisturizing Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: If Loma isn't already on your radar, it should be. Hampton recommends the brand's Hair Care Moisturizing Shampoo, which she describes as a "lightweight and moisture-rich" formula that "hydrates your hair and scalp and leaves hair super soft and silky." The color-safe formula is boosted with soothing aloe vera (great for an irritated, dandruff-prone scalp ), moisturizing jojoba and avocado seed oils, and amino-acid-rich quinoa protein to quench brittle hair and repair damaged cuticle layers.

Editor Tip: The relaxing combination of vanilla bean and orange scents alone is enough to get you hooked.

Who It's Good For: People with dry, dull hair.

Best for Dull Hair: DpHue Color Fresh Shampoo

DpHue Color Fresh Shampoo in white bottle with white cap

DpHue Color Fresh Shampoo

Why It's Worth It: Ferrara always tells clients to reach for DpHue's Color Fresh Shampoo to keep their color job looking healthy in between salon visits. It's formulated with shine-inducing kumquat extract and UV damage-shielding sunflower seed extract to keep fading to a minimum — making it ideal for dull hair.

Editor Tip: If your hair goals involve kicking brassiness to the curb, then the brand's Brightening Collection , brought to life in collaboration with Kristin Cavallari, was designed for you.

Who It's Good For: People looking for all-day protection against fading.

Extra care is a must for your dye job since there are a number of contributing factors when it comes to your color fading. Watch out for exposure to hard water , the overuse of heat-styling tools (and hot shower temperatures), and even UV rays. "The sun bleaches color out of everything, including your hair," St. Louis-based colorist Caitlin Ford tells Allure . "If you're going outside for extended periods of time, protect your scalp and hair with a hat," she adds. We also like to spritz on a little hair sunscreen to make sure we've covered all of our bases.

What are sulfates, and are they bad for color-treated hair?

Sulfates are cleansers that trap oil-based dirt so it can be rinsed away from skin or hair with water. They also happen to be the additives behind the lather and bubbles in shampoos, toothpastes, and soaps. Overall, the jury is still kind of out on whether they're harmful or not, but this group of ingredients is definitely known for its color-stripping effects.

While sulfates are usually given the side-eye — for example, they're a no-go, according to our very own Clean Best of Beauty seal — they aren't necessarily as bad for preserving your hair pigment as they're made out to be. Cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller previously told Allure that water is as damaging as any cleanser. "When your hair gets wet, it swells, the hair shaft opens, and some color leaches out," says Schueller, who tested sulfates against other surfactants and didn't see any notable differences in terms of fading color. (This is why many experts suggest washing your hair less often and spritzing dry shampoo to buy you extra time in between.)

However, the case against sulfates is still pretty valid — especially if you want to err on the side of caution. Not only are they irritating to the skin, but they are also capable of "stripping the [scalp] of its natural oils" a little too well, Aanand Geria , MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Rutherford, NJ previously explained to Allure . In other words: Sulfates are a pretty slippery slope, leading to dryness and flaking.

How is shampoo for colored hair different than "regular" shampoos?

Like many experts, New York City-based colorist Nikki Ferrara is a fan of brands with sulfate-free offerings , as she says they will "extend the shelf life of your hair color and prevent fading." Los Angeles-based colorist and Redken brand ambassador Matt Rez previously divulged that using sulfate-free shampoo will keep hair as hydrated as possible. Adding to the chorus is cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson , who told Allure that sulfates can dry hair out, which can be especially damaging after coloring. They'll also make your eyes burn if they accidentally slip in, which is a universally unpleasant experience.

All to say: Your best bet, when it comes to preserving your color, is to switch your regular shampoo with one that's specially formulated for color-treated hair. (Please, no clarifying shampoos .)

We'll have to dabble in the color wheel theory to answer this question. Basically, complementary colors — or colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel — neutralize each other. Therefore, you can use tinted shampoos, hair masks, and conditioners to balance brassy tones and dullness. "To counteract yellow hues you need to use something that has violet in it; to counteract orange tones you'll need to use blue hues," St. Louis, Missouri-based colorist Kristina Cheeseman previously told Allure . For minimizing brassy tones, a purple shampoo for blondes and blue shampoo for brunettes are always your best bets.

We always enlist a range of testers for our makeup vertical, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While there are certain products that can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and needs, hair products are often created with specific consumers in mind. Many are created in order to address a concern (dandruff, breakage, brittleness) or to work most effectively for a specific hair type (4C curls, wavy hair, gray hair). You wouldn’t want to pick up a purple shampoo that’s only been reviewed by someone with, say, auburn hair, or a diffuser that’s never been tested by anyone with curls — right?

For our review of shampoos for color-treated hair, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and hair colorists — many of whom have or have had color-treated hair. Testers considered performance across four primary categories: efficacy, texture and experience, fragrance, and packaging. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page .

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

What to Keep in Mind

Your questions, answered, why shop with us.

Whether you’ve got a full head of highlights, a simple single process, or rainbow hair, color-treated strands need extra TLC. Beyond regular salon visits, you need to treat your tresses to weekly deep conditioning masks, take proper precautions when heat styling, and above all, carefully select a shampoo.

It can be a challenge to find a color-enhancing shampoo that checks all your boxes. Maybe you’re a blonde that needs a purple shampoo that doesn’t strip your bleached mane. Or perhaps you’re in dire need of a clarifying shampoo, one of the most difficult color-safe products to find. We combed through all the options and consulted with four hair experts to help you find the best shampoos for color-treated hair, so you can wash with care and extend time between salon appointments.

Best Overall

K18 peptide prep ph maintenance shampoo.

What We Love: This formula features clinically-proven bond-repairing technology to repair damage deep within the hair shaft.

What We Don’t Love: Because this doesn’t contain many hydrating ingredients you’ll need to use a conditioner post-cleanse to ensure hair stays soft.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a colorist these days that won’t sing the praises of K18’s peptide-packed line, including this shampoo, which works in two ways: The product is designed to prevent the hair follicle from swelling, which can cause color fade, as well as tangles and breakage. The brand’s signature K18 molecule also helps penetrate strands to repair broken bonds, making hair more resilient and healthy. Additionally, because it’s pH-balanced, you’ll experience healthier hair overall.

“It gently cleanses without taking away all your scalp’s natural oils,” says New York-based colorist Madison Garrett. Celebrity colorist Sharon Dorram adds that “it’s great for color-treated hair because it restores the texture to [make it] healthy and shiny.”

If you have fine hair and prefer not to condition every time you cleanse, you may want to reserve this formula for a once-weekly wash. Color-treated hair really needs moisture and that seems especially true after using this formula. Because it blocks hair from absorbing excess water, your mane may feel a little dry post-cleanse. Incorporating a conditioning treatment (either a rinse-out or leave-in formula ) will help you achieve the best results from this product.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8.5 oz | Key Ingredients: Glycerin, peptide complex | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best Budget

L'oréal paris everpure moisture shampoo.

What We Love: This is a rare budget-friendly color-safe shampoo that’s free of sulfates.

What We Don’t Love: Though it leaves hair feeling soft and moisturized, it doesn’t have any other added benefits, which may be disappointing for some.

Affordable shampoos formulated without sulfates aren’t the easiest to find, but this L’Oréal product is both sulfate-free and lathers beautifully, making for a sudsy and satisfying shower experience. It’s gentle enough for daily use and won’t weigh down hair despite being chock full of botanicals — like rosemary — that help to replenish dry strands. Dual-acting rosemary also purifies the scalp while adding a refreshing tingle that’s truly delightful on hot, sticky days or after an intense workout.

While this product does a great job cleansing and moisturizing to help you maintain your color, it won’t provide any other overarching benefits, like boosted volume or extra shine. However, regardless of hair type or texture, if you already have a voluminous mane or shiny strands, this budget-friendly formula will be right up your alley.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8.5 oz | Key Ingredients: Rosemary extract | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best Splurge

Philip b. russian amber imperial shampoo.

Bloomingdale's

What We Love: A very small amount of this sophisticated shampoo goes a long way to protect your dye job and enhance vibrancy.

What We Don’t Love: The packaging makes this shampoo messy to use.

Beauty editors and hair colorists alike have been singing the praises of this fancy formula for years, including Dorram. “It’s the most luxurious shampoo — it imparts mega luster and volume,” she says. The ingredient list is lengthy and impressive, boasting hair-strengthening amino acids, conditioning panthenol, and nourishing shea butter, just to mention a few.

Aside from the ingredients, the packaging makes this pick standout from others on our list. Rather than a traditional bottle, the thick formula is housed in a small jar. Don't let the size deter you, though, because just a small dollop goes a long way to deliver a rich lather and thorough wash that will leave your hair beautifully bouncy and glossy.

Another word on that jar: Although compact, it's not the easiest to open with wet hands. We recommend unscrewing the top before hopping in the shower. Trust us, the quality of the formula is worth this minor inconvenience.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 3 oz | Key Ingredients: Amino acids, panthenol, shea butter | Sulfate-Free: No

Best Drugstore

Maui moisture color protection + sea minerals shampoo.

What We Love: This affordable formula is shockingly luxurious and the jumbo bottle will last a long time.

What We Don’t Love: The square-shaped container isn’t the most ergonomic and can be a challenge to squeeze.

Don’t be surprised if you open this shampoo and second-guess the formula — at first glance it looks like a conditioner due to the creamy, indulgent texture. Rest assured that a quick lather diminishes all doubts and you'll wonder why anyone spends an exorbitant amount of money on color-safe shampoo.

With a blend of hydrating and nourishing extracts, including mineral-rich marine plant algae and kelp, the formula fortifies hair while removing excess sebum from the scalp. The inclusion of seawater goes one step further to wash away heavy oils, leaving your hair bouncy and fuller-looking while enhancing color vibrancy in the process.

This is a nitpicky thing, but if you have a weak grip or mobility issues, you may struggle with the square-shaped bottle, which is harder to squeeze than those with a round footprint. If this sounds like you but you still want to reap the rewards of this shampoo, try removing the cap entirely and pouring it out to avoid any issues.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 13 oz | Key Ingredients: Aloe, algae extracts, seawater | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best Clarifying

Hours day 7 clarifying shampoo.

What We Love: The gentle yet fully cleansing formula feels refreshing on the scalp and won’t dehydrate hair.

What We Don’t Love: We wish we got more lather from this shampoo.

If you’ve ever scoured the shampoo aisles in search of a clarifying formula that’s safe for color-treated hair, you know what a challenge that can be. It is a true rarity in the haircare world, which makes sense considering clarifying shampoos are designed to provide a deep clean and can ultimately dull color.

This one from hOURS isn’t only color-safe, but it’s also cruelty-free, ideal for keratin-treated hair, and formulated without additives like sulfates or parabens. The stylist-developed shampoo also features peppermint oil to refresh and invigorate the scalp, and vitamin E to condition hair.

Keep in mind that this is a low-lather formula, which is purposeful — it prevents over-stripping to keep your hair moisturized and shiny — but may be a slight disappointment to those who appreciate the sensorial experience of a foamy cleanse. However, for those who are in need of a clarifying shampoo that’s actually good for your color, that’s a small price to pay.

Best for: All hair textures, oily hair | Size: 8 oz | Key Ingredients: Babassu oil, hydrolyzed pea protein, avocado oil | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Blondes

Moroccanoil blonde perfecting shampoo.

What We Love: This formula can extend your time between salon visits by a few weeks.

What We Don’t Love: The scent is very strong.

Those who want to go blonde often need to have their existing color lifted to achieve the lighter hue (and in some cases, the hair has to be bleached significantly). This causes hair to become more porous, which makes it further susceptible to color fade — so you’ll need a purple shampoo, like this one from Moroccanoil, to maintain the hue.

Garrett says that this shampoo tones down brassiness and prevents dulling so quickly that your friends may ask if you’ve just visited your colorist after a single cleanse. The purple tones cancel out the yellow tinge that can develop from water mineral buildup, restoring your bright, cooler blonde back to its full glory. Argan oil in the formula also helps keep hair soft and silky.

If you’re a fan of Moroccanoil’s signature scent — a heady blend of vanilla, musks, and florals — you’ll love the fragrance in this shampoo. On the other hand, those who are scent-averse may want to limit use to once a week, as the perfume can be overpowering for some.

Best for: All hair types, especially those with blonde hair | Size: 6.7 oz | Key Ingredients: Glycerin, argan oil | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Redheads

Pureology smooth perfection shampoo.

What We Love: This deeply nourishing shampoo will prevent bright red hues from fading.

What We Don’t Love: It may be too rich for fine, oily hair.

Quick science lesson: When it comes to hair dye pigments, red features the largest molecule size. Because of this it can’t penetrate as deeply into the hair strand, making it more prone to fading quickly. Don’t let this fact deter you from going red, though: “Making sure you are using a moisture-focused shampoo will maintain the vibrancy for longer,” says Garrett, who notes that hydrating formulas will also help seal the cuticle to prevent color loss.

This Pureology Smooth Perfection Shampoo uses camellia and shea butter to keep hair silky soft, conditioned, and glossy, protecting your color while making red hues pop.  This makes the formula intensely conditioning, so it may be too heavy on fine and oily strands, at least for everyday use. We suggest having two shampoos on rotation in your shower — one clarifying and one conditioning, like this one — to ensure you’re getting the clean, fresh, and healthy hair you’re aiming for without weighing down your strands.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 9 oz | Key Ingredients: Camellia, shea butter | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Brunettes

Not your mother’s triple threat brunette blue shampoo.

Not Your Mother's

What We Love: This vibrant blue formula delivers serious color-correcting powers to maintain brown tones.

What We Don’t Love: Be sure to rinse thoroughly lest you want blue-tinged ears and fingers.

While blondes use purple shampoo to cancel out yellow tones, brunettes should opt for blue formulas to combat orange tones. This shampoo effortlessly diminishes orange brassiness without breaking your budget. In addition to toning blue pigments, it features blue tansy oil, a soothing form of chamomile that balances and comforts your scalp, and water-locking glycerin. The result is seriously shiny, smooth, and frizz-free hair that rivals a salon refresh.

The blue pigments in this shampoo are more intense than other brunette-correcting formulas we’ve tried, so be sure to rinse your hair and hands thoroughly after lathering. Don’t forget your ears, either — shampoo residue tends to build up in there which, with this product, will lend you a less-than-desirable Smurfish quality.

Best for: All brunettes and adjacent shades | Size: 8 oz | Key Ingredients: Glycerin, blue tansy oil | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Fine Hair

Virtue full shampoo.

What We Love: This formula will repair and condition fine hair, and leave it fresh and clean for days.

What We Don’t Love: If you have excessively oily hair, this deeply moisturizing product may weigh strands down.

Dorram loves the Virtue Labs range, not just for her clients, but also for herself. She says that fine hair can easily get weighed down by color-safe formulas due to their nourishing properties, but this one delivers light moisture to keep hair soft and frizz-free, all without leaving hair limp. This shampoo also features the brand’s signature alpha keratin, which plumps each strand while repairing damage for a healthier, thicker-looking mane with every wash.

The conditioning properties in this formula are just right for those with fine hair, but if your hair leans oily, you may find that you need to wash daily to keep your strands looking clean. However, for every other hair type, one wash is enough to maintain fresh-looking strands for several days, which is a lifesaver when trying to preserve color (and save money at the salon).

Best for: Fine hair, straight hair | Size: 8 oz | Key Ingredients: Phospholipids, panthenol, alpha keratin | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Dandruff

Igk legendary shampoo.

What We Love: This formula contains prebiotics to balance the scalp and ward off dandruff.

What We Don’t Love: Be aware that this shampoo contains silicones, which can weigh down fine hair.

If you have dandruff and regularly dye your hair, you'll need to take extra care of your scalp as dyes and peroxide may irritate it even further. We love this cleverly designed formula from IGK because it uses prebiotics to support a healthy scalp microbiome. This will help keep the delicate skin balanced, defending against flakes and dryness while also combating excess oil production for happier and healthier-looking hair. Aside from the prebiotics, red sea algae promotes shine and bounce while boosting hydration levels as you cleanse.

In addition to caring for the scalp, this works to tame frizzy hair thanks to the silicones in the formula that leave strands silky smooth. Finer hair types may find that this ingredient weighs down their hair and cuts down on volume. If you fall into this category, we recommend something a bit more lightweight, like the K18 Peptide Prep pH Maintenance Shampoo .

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8 oz | Key Ingredients: Prebiotics, red sea algae, panthenol | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best Sulfate-Free

Oribe shampoo for beautiful color.

What We Love: This ultra-luxe formula gently cleanses without stripping for longer-lasting color.

What We Don’t Love: For the best results we suggest double-cleansing, so you may burn through the bottle quickly.

Sulfates can quickly strip color, so it’s important to use a sulfate-free shampoo whenever possible to maintain your dye job — and this indulgent pick from Oribe is a fan-favorite.

The low-lather formula gently washes away oil buildup without fading color or weighing down hair, leaving strands glossy, bouncy, and touchably soft. Bioflavenoids block color fade, while baobab tree extract draws moisture into hair, and edelweiss flower helps combat free radicals that can cause keratin damage.

Because this shampoo doesn’t have much lather (sulfates are what deliver a foamy cleanse), you’ll want to wash your hair twice to get the cleanest and freshest results. This also means you’ll probably finish a bottle faster than other shampoos. This is something to be aware of when you’re on a budget — but if you don’t mind investing in your hair, this is worthy of the splurge.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8.5 oz | Key Ingredients: Bioflavenoids, baobab tree extract, edelweiss flower | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Dry Hair

Matrix food for soft hydrating shampoo.

What We Love: This shampoo seriously quenches ultra-dry hairs’ thirst.

What We Don’t Love: It isn’t sulfate-free.

Color-treated hair is at high risk for drying out due to the harsh experience of processing — all those chemicals can wreak havoc on hair’s health — but we love how this hydrating shampoo transforms straw-like strands. It features water-loving hyaluronic acid and glycerin, as well as nourishing avocado oil, to draw and seal moisture into your hair, preventing dehydration and promoting softness and shine.

At first, we are a little disappointed to see sulfates on the ingredient list, especially considering the brand offers other shampoos developed without sulfates, but it seems as if the intensely moisturizing formula counteracts the dryness associated with this ingredient category. Plus, we have to admit, we love a rich lather, and this shampoo creates an impressive one.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 10.1 oz | Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, avocado oil, glycerin | Sulfate-Free: No

Best for Oily Hair

Olaplex no. 4 bond maintenance shampoo.

What We Love: This formula balances the scalp while keeping strands nourished and strong.

What We Don’t Love: It's very thick and can be difficult to work into the hair.

Finding the right balance between hydration and cleansing is challenging in a color-safe shampoo, but this one from Olaplex fits the bill. It fully clarifies the scalp without irritation, while reviving dehydrated dyed strands. This is thanks to the brand’s signature patented ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, which works to repair broken bonds within the follicle to help fortify damaged and brittle hair and restore it to a healthy state — exactly what you need in a shampoo for damaged hair .

Because of the reparative technology, this shampoo is very thick, which can make it a challenge to work into the scalp (and if you have a lot of hair, wash day can feel a little fatiguing as a result). You will have to put extra effort into rinsing your hair to make sure there is no residue left behind.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8.5 oz | Key Ingredients: Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Best for Curly Hair

R+co television perfect hair shampoo.

What We Love: The product delivers body and shine to all hair textures, including curly hair.

What We Don’t Love: The perfume-like fragrance is strong and will not appeal to everyone.

Curly hair is at a heightened risk for breakage — and this intensifies when you add harsh color treatment into the mix. Luckily, this body-building, strand-strengthening formula helps keep hair in good health. Even those with coily hair will experience added shine and body, and smoother hair with each wash. Glycerin and babassu seed oil are to thank for the television-worthy results: They work in tandem to draw water into the hair and seal it in, deeply conditioning without weighing hair down.

Like many R+Co formulas, this shampoo has a strong fragrance. It features the brand’s Dark Waves scent, which has notes of cardamom, tangerine, lavender, and blonde woods. It’s a warm and romantic smell and there’s a good chance you’ll love it, but if you’re scent-averse, keep this characteristic in mind before committing.

Best for: All hair types | Size: 8 oz | Key Ingredients: Glycerin, babassu seed oil, juniper berry extract | Sulfate-Free: Yes

Your hair type should be top of mind when shopping for a color-safe shampoo because what works for one hair texture won’t work for another. For example, “using a very rich sulfate-free shampoo may do wonders on someone with thick, strong, long hair, while on someone with fine, shorter hair it may leave it weighed down and lacking volume,” says Dorram.

Oily hair can be the most challenging hair type to deal with when you have color-treated strands — your instinct will be to wash your hair daily, but doing so will put the vibrancy at risk. Start by looking at the consistency of your shampoo, which will help you determine if it’s a good fit. “Some shampoos have a creamy consistency, while others are clear. For those with more oily hair, I’d recommend a clear shampoo,” says Gratzer.

Nearly all hair that’s been color-treated gets dry, so once you determine your hair type, look for nourishing formulas that won’t weigh it down. “Dry and damaged hair can make the color appear duller, so making sure you're taking care of hair health is important,” says New York-based hairstylist Vennela Chamarti. “When the hair gets damaged, the hair cuticle chips away, making it rougher.” Using a formula that can actually repair hair damage like K18 Peptide Prep pH Maintenance Shampoo will help the cuticle lay flat, making it look smooth and glossy.

Be sure not to over shampoo — cleansing too much will strip moisture from your hair and leave it frizzy, which you already know if you have curly or natural hair. Try to shampoo sparingly using a moisturizing formula like R+Co Television Perfect Hair Shampoo , which contains nourishing babassu seed oil and glycerin to keep the hair hydrated and smooth.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to have several shampoos in your shower. “It’s important to rotate your products,” says Dorram. “Hair reacts differently over time.” If you keep multiple products on hand, you’ll be able to make sure your hair has exactly what it needs, when it needs it.

Ingredients

Above all, color-treated hair needs moisture. Garrett recommends seeking out shampoos made with natural oils, especially grapeseed, jojoba, coconut, or sunflower seed oils. “They are rich in antioxidants that help repair and restore moisture,” she says, adding that sunflower seed oil can be especially soothing on the scalp for those whose skin gets irritated easily from permanent color. We love the nourishing blend of oils in hOURS Day 7 Clarifying Shampoo , which include avocado and babassu seed oils. For added hydration, you can use a shampoo with aloe; you’ll find it in Maui Moisture Color Protection + Sea Minerals Shampoo .

Perhaps a controversial take, but you might also want to look for a product that contains silicones. “They bind to the hair to give structure and help the cuticle look smoother,” says Chamarti. Many people are against the idea of silicones because they’re chemicals (spoiler alert — water is also technically a chemical), but others don’t like them because they can weigh down hair and create buildup. It’s really about what works for your hair, and finding out what’s best for you will take some trial and error.

You’ll absolutely want a formula that contains a gentle surfactant, a type of ingredient that lathers to remove oils. The most common type of surfactants are sulfates, which most colorists strongly advise against using. “Strong sulfates lift and strip debris from the hair, leaving hair color dull, faded, and eventually leave hair brittle,” warns Dorram, who also advises against using formulas with parabens, sodium chloride, alcohol, mineral oil, and fragrance for the same reason. “Synthetic fragrances can cause irritation to the scalp,” adds Garrett.

When selecting a color-safe shampoo, you’ll want to keep your hair color in mind. Not all colorists will agree on this topic, but you may want to invest in a tinted shampoo that will tone your color in between appointments. Blondes are at high risk for color change — if you have ever watched your hair turn green after a dip in the pool, you know what we’re talking about. “Natural elements such as salt water, chlorine, and minerals in water can cause yellowing or discoloration in blonde hair,” confirms Garrett. “Having a purple shampoo on hand to use every few washes is good.” She likes Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo , which will help rebalance hair color and soften strands.

You can also cocktail your go-to shampoo with a purple formula. “I always tell my blonde clients to mix a little bit of purple shampoo into their regular shampoo for some extra brightness between appointments,” says New York-based color specialist Courtney Gratzer. “Purple shampoo is meant for those beachy and baby blonde clients, but if used too often, it can dry out the hair — which is why it’s good to mix it into your regular shampoo.”

Redheads have the hardest challenge when maintaining the hue of their hair, as the pigment molecules of red dye are larger than any other color. Keeping your hair moisturized will help prevent fading while adding shine that enhances your red; try Pureology Smooth Perfection Shampoo .

Brunettes have the worst of both worlds — the color fade of redheads with the brassiness of blondes. “Some colorists recommend blue shampoo for brunettes to cancel out orangey-red, brassy tones,” says Chamarti. Not Your Mother’s Triple Threat Brunette Blue Shampoo features blue pigments to color correct these shades. But it’s important to use any tinted shampoo as sparingly as possible, she adds. “They can dry out the hair or deposit unwanted tints,” she says.

It’s for this reason that Dorram advises against using color-depositing shampoos. (You especially shouldn’t use them without the supervision of your colorist.) “I am not a proponent of shampoos that change hair color — I like to have full control of my clients’ hair,” she says.

Do I need a special shampoo for colored hair?

The answer is undoubtedly yes. You cannot use any old shampoo on colored hair. “Color-treated hair has a different porosity than virgin, non-chemically treated hair, so it requires extra special care,” says Dorram. That porosity may leave it weak, and color treating is inherently damaging, so you’ll need to use a shampoo intentionally designed to support your strands.

“Color-protectant shampoos are formulated to contain special oils and other ingredients to help repair and moisturize color-treated hair,” says Garrett. “Healthy hair allows for vibrancy and longevity with color.”

What shampoos should those with colored hair avoid?

We’ve mentioned this already, but the one thing that all of our colorists advised against using is a formula with sulfates. “If you have any chemical at all in your hair — a single process with or without peroxide, highlights, or a keratin treatment — you must look for shampoos that do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate,” says Dorram. This ingredient will strip your color faster, especially if you don’t have support from a solid conditioner .

But perhaps more important than your shampoo selection is your wash day frequency, as well as how often you condition your hair. “The more frequently you shampoo, the more the water washes away the color,” warns Dorram. Using a good conditioner in tandem with a quality shampoo will extend the lifespan of your color. “The conditioner is what basically locks in the color,” Dorram confirms.

If the idea of dirty hair stresses you out, Gratzer recommends seeking out a trustworthy dry shampoo , which will help you stretch the time between washes. “If you’re used to washing every day, it may take some time to train your hair,” she says, adding that doing a double cleanse on wash days will provide extra insurance against oily roots.

Emily Orofino is a beauty writer, editor, and consultant with more than a decade of experience in the industry. She has been color-treating her hair for several years, and discovering the magic that is blue shampoo was a revelation. For this piece, she interviewed four hair pros: Master colorist Madison Garrett at NYC’s Spoke & Weal; Sharon Dorram , owner of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger in New York; Courtney Gratzer , colorist at Blandi on 5th in NYC; and Vennela Chamarti , stylist at Blandi on 5th. They all provided invaluable insights into color-treated hair and how to find the best color-safe shampoo for all hair types.

The 8 Very Best Shampoos for Fine Hair

With specific picks for volumizing, texturizing, moisturizing, and more..

Portrait of Rachael Griffiths

In this article

Best shampoo for fine hair overall.

  • Best less-expensive
  • Best volumizing
  • Best for dry fine hair
  • Best for oily fine hair
  • Best for curly hair
  • Best for tangle-prone hair

I have fine hair , and it’s hard not to burn with envy when a friend tells me they only have to wash their hair “once a week or so.” As I have smaller, less porous strands of hair (which often betray me by glistening with oil at the root mere hours after washing), it feels like I’m stuck in a constant time loop of washing and drying my hair — and that’s before I even factor in how long it takes to will some body into it.

However, I know tracking down the perfect formula takes time — with fine-hair shampoos especially. That’s because fine hair often has the tendency to be both flat and dry , so the shampoo has several jobs. You need to look for formulas that are rich in peptides and protein to thicken the hair, ingredients such as turnip extract to give the hair a boost from the scalp, and then also acid-, ceramide-, and vitamin-rich formulas to hydrate the hair and even promote growth. It’s a tall order, so along with sampling half a dozen shampoos over the last six months, I also turned to 13 stylists and hair-care experts to find the best shampoos for all types of fine hair. (And if you’re looking for more hair-care recommendations, read my guides to best shampoos and conditioners .)

What we’re looking for

Sulfate free vs. non–sulfate free.

Sulfates are basically powerful detergents that help to clean the hair. They are safe to use but can be stripping, particularly on fine, thinner hair types. For the most part I’ve avoided them, besides in one formula where I think they’re a good addition.

Like any beauty product, shampoo is often scented. Everyone has a personal preference when it comes to scent, so I’ve jotted down what each shampoo smells like so you can pick one that takes your fancy.

If budget is an important factor, you’ll want to keep an eye on the total ounces of shampoo you’re getting per dollar.

Kérastase Densifique Bodifying Shampoo

Sulfate-free | Scent: Fresh | Size: 8.45 oz.

I recently rediscovered this shampoo — beauty writer Linda Dyett was the one to put it back on my radar. “[It] contains the same hyaluronic acid that hydrates and plumps the skin. It has a similar effect on my hair,” she says. I’ve been using this shampoo for several weeks now, and have wondered how I’d ever named any other as the best shampoo for fine hair (but more on that below).   Here’s the twist: It contains sulfates, but my hair hasn’t felt stripped at all. (And I do like the nice lather that the sulfates provide.) Instead, my hair feels healthy and soft thanks to the hyaluronic acid and ceramides included in the formula. It also feels notably more plump: The bodifying shampoo contains gluco peptide, which is an ingredient that strengthens your existing hair by thickening the hair follicles.

Dyett adds, “It’s also got a complex called intracylane that, intriguingly, was inspired by a chemical process used in glassmaking. It appears to fill in surface gaps on and thicken individual strands of hair.” Intracyclane is a molecule that enters and strengthens strands of hair, from root to tip. It also has that salon-smelling fresh, musky, floral scent — the final touch to help me name it our best shampoo for fine hair overall.

Best less expensive shampoo for fine hair

MONDAY Haircare Volume Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Fruity | Size: 12 oz.

If you’re on a budget, Monday has become my most recommended drugstore hair-care line. It’s a quarter of the price of the Kérastase shampoo, and it’s also sulfate-free (in fact, every other shampoo in this list is sulfate-free, if you know that’s something that you want to avoid). Though it’s cheap, the ingredients list is packed: It contains ginger extract and coconut oil, the fatty extracts and nutrients from each nourishing thinner hair. It also contains vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that actually promotes hair growth. Strategist writer Dominique Pariso has sworn by this shampoo purchasing it over a year ago. “My hair is very oily, and while I’ve tried lots of expensive shampoos before — from Oribe to Sachajuan — this is the only one that ever gets my hair compliments,” says Pariso. “It adds a good amount of body and, most important, a lot of shine without weighing my hair down or making it look greasy (and for only $7 a bottle at that).”

Best volumizing shampoo for fine hair

Davines Volu Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Fruity, woodsy | Size: 8.5 oz.

Before Kérastase came along, Davines Volu was my favorite shampoo for my thin hair. I was curious about it since Strategist beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton (who also has fine hair) recommended it. In the few months that I used it, it did not disappoint. When I let my hair air-dry, it was far less limp, but after blow drying I could clearly see the bounce all the way from the root. This is thanks to the turnip extract , which gives body. It lost the top spot as I believe that Kérastase just has far better thickening qualities . But if your hair is super flat no matter how you attack it, this shampoo is a great volumizing option. It’s still a favorite of Brooke Jordan, owner and master stylist at the Bird House in Gowanus, who told me that the shampoo is a favorite of his as it’s free of parabens and sulfates, gentle enough to use every day, and detangles the hair so you don’t need to use conditioner (though if your hair is superlong, he suggests using a very small amount of conditioner on just the ends to get rid of knots; otherwise, he says, skip it altogether).

Best shampoo for dry fine hair

Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Floral | Size: 8.5 oz.

If your hair falls under the fine and dry category (maybe it’s natural, maybe you’ve fried it with bleach), it’s a careful balance to address those concerns. You want ingredients that are hydrating but not so heavy they’ll weigh your thinner hair down. Moroccanoil Moisture Repair (another solid drugstore option) does just this. It hydrates the hair by using argan oil , which is an ingredient you’ll definitely have heard of (and maybe even moved on from), but as it’s so antioxidant-rich, I think it’s a dry-hair-care staple. This shampoo then addresses the thinning aspect by using keratin, the protein that’s naturally found in hair, to coat and thicken from root to tip. And although it’s not a budget option, stylist Jon Carlos De La Cruz advises using the product sparingly (“a little bit goes a long way here,” he says), meaning your bottle will last.

Best shampoo for oily fine hair

Hairstory New Wash Kit

Thin and oily hair is a recipe for frequent washing. “It’s easy to say that you shouldn’t wash your hair very often, but a lot of my clients with fine hair tell me it drives them crazy to wait too long,” says Jordan. I know that frequent washing can be super stripping, so I reached out to expert stylist Gregorio Ruggeri of Salon Ruggeri to ask what he recommends in that situation. His solution was New Wash. “My clients who have fine hair and wash their hair every day have found the right type of body-boosting components from using New Wash,” he says. New Wash is technically a shampoo-and-conditioner replacement, which means it’s more like an essential-oil-based hair cleanser that washes hair without any suds. It’s formulated without detergents or synthetic compounds, doesn’t dry hair out, and leaves hair conditioned and tangle-free. Because it’s a two-in-one product, it’s no-fuss and ideal for someone looking for a streamline, low-maintenance routine. For those who need more convincing, former Strategist writer Molly Young gave the shampoo a ringing endorsement, writing, “The results are wild. My long hair air-dries perfectly, with no ‘squeaky’ texture. It is shiny and falls in loose waves, like it did when I was a kid. I don’t need to blow-dry it. My chronic flaky scalp is gone forever.”

Best shampoo for curly fine hair

Eufora Curl'n Enhancing Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Citrus | Size: 8.45 oz.

Curlier hair can trap oil at the root, which is why a lot of people with thick curls find that their ends become dry and brittle — and crave heavy moisturizing ingredients in their hair products. For thinner hair, those formulas aren’t appropriate, as they’ll actually weigh your hair down. Instead, I recommend Eufora’s sulfate-free formula for curly hair. It hydrates, but gently so, using tomato extracts and nourishing Moringa-seed oil. It also has keratin amino acids, which we know work with the keratin in the hair to strengthen it. I got the recommendation from Angela Taormino, of Brooklyn-based Union Beauty Salon: She adds that the formula is color-safe and can be used daily without stripping hair or leaving it feeling over-shampooed.

Best less-expensive shampoo for fine curly hair

Texture ID Curl Clarifying Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Almond | Size: 12 oz.

If you’re on a budget, Texture ID’s shampoo is a third of the price. It’s worth noticing that this is a clarifying shampoo, though — so it’s less focused on nourishing the hair. Instead, it works by removing any product buildup, “freeing your fine hair curls from the constraints of oils, silicones, waxes, and butters,” explains Patterson. And while it’s not packed full of those hydrating ingredients, the removal of this buildup means your hair can receive moisture from the root, “which helps spring your curls into action,” he explains.

Best shampoo for tangle-prone fine hair

Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Shampoo

Sulfate-free vs. non-sulfate free: Sulfate-free | Scent: Sweet and nutty | Size 8.5 oz.

If your fine hair often ends up in tangles (or knots), the right shampoo can help you prevent those tangles from ever forming. This one was brought to my attention by fellow Strategist writer Katherine Gillespie. She finds that most shampoos make her hair too dry and fluffy. But the Bumble and Bumble shampoo is “so lightweight yet moisturizing that I can use it every couple of days with no problem.” She adds, “My hair always looks great afterward — I just air-dry it, and I always get compliments.” Even though this shampoo is free of sulfates, Gillespie reports that it lathers in an “extremely satisfying way,” leaving her hair feeling “clean but not squeaky” and not dry or fluffy, which she attributes to its namesake blend of “invisible oil” — including grape-seed, sweet-almond, coconut, safflower, macadamia, and argan oils. It’s these oils that smooth out the hair gently, preventing it from snagging up as you’re towel drying.

The Best Travel Size Shampoos for Healthy Hair

Best Travel Size Shampoos

Branded content. Us Weekly has affiliate partnerships so we may receive compensation for some links to products and services.

Traveling can stress out your hair and skin, whether it’s caused by small hotel shampoos that steal every scrap of moisture from your scalp or your grandma’s giant bottle of Suave shampoo that she’s had since the early 00s. That’s why having a premium travel-size shampoo can go a long way in helping you look and feel your best.

Finding the right travel-size shampoo can prevent frizz, breakage, and dryness while keeping your hair healthy and full of life. If you head into your local grocery store, you’ll find a section of travel products with brands that may not work for your hair type, so we’ve done the research to find affordable premium haircare products so you can live your best—hair—life.

Things to consider when choosing a travel-size shampoo:

TSA-compliant size : Travel products should always be compliant with TSA policies. Liquid items in your carry-on should be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or smaller. Pack larger liquid in your checked luggage to avoid having them confiscated.

Hair type : Finding products that suit your hair and scalp is essential. Not all shampoo formulas will deliver the results you’re after. When browsing, ensure the cleanser provides the proper nutrients or moisture for your best hair day—even while traveling.

Hair-loving ingredients : Look for plant-based ingredients that ensure the hair and scalp get clean without removing moisture. The best travel-size shampoos contain naturally derived ingredients suitable for all hair types.

We’ve gathered the best travel-size shampoos so you can keep your hair healthy and strong.

1. Blu Atlas Shampoo (Included in Essentials Travel Set)

Blu Atlas Essentials Travel Set

Travel often results in dry, damaged hair, but that doesn’t have to be your norm. Blu Atlas Shampoo is the best travel-size shampoo because it contains nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that ensure each strand retains hydration as you cleanse.

Naturally derived ingredients like jojoba oil, vegan biotin, aloe vera, and saw palmetto ensure your hair keeps moisture locked in, while coconut-derived surfactants lather up to remove excess oil, dirt, and pollution. The formula is free from sulfates, paraben, and phthalates and cleanses hair gently.

2. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo

Perfect hair Day Shampoo is a travel-size cleanser that gently removes product buildup and oil from the hair and scalp. Living Proof is a popular brand that makes traveling more fun. Twenty-one of their customer-favorite products are available in TSA-compliant sizes that fit into a toiletry kit.

Lather up and help your hair shine with a shampoo free of silicone, paraben, phthalates, and sulfate. After one wash, the 2 oz bottle strengthens hair and adds 68% more shine.

3. Native Cucumber & Mint Volumizing Shampoo

Native Cucumber & Mint Volumizing Shampoo

Allow yourself to unwind and get your whole body squeaky clean after stressful travel days with a shampoo that focuses on nourishing ingredients. Native products harness potent plant-derived ingredients to deliver a premium grooming experience. Check the back of the bottle to see Native’s brand transparency in action and learn more about naturally derived ingredients in the ‘poo.

Cucumber & Mint Volumizing Shampoo adds extra oomph to flat, tired hair while cleaning and removing product build-up and oil. Native shampoos are always paraben-free, sulfate-free, silicone-free, and dye-free, so you don’t have to worry about breakage or damage.

4. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo

Treat your scalp to a hydrating wash with Pureology’s Hydrate Shampoo. As a premium haircare brand, Pureology brings together luxury ingredients for an elevated cleansing ritual. As you wash your strands, the shower steam whips up a spa-like aromatherapy treatment with the cleanser’s soothing blend of lavender, patchouli, and bergamot.

Hydrate Shampoo is the perfect TSA-friendly bottle at 1.7 oz for folks with dry, dull hair. As a vegan, sulfate-free formula, it works for all hair types, including those with color-treated hair. The shampoo is ideal for folks with medium to thick hair types as the formula works deep into the hair to revive each strand.

5. Kiehl’s Amino Acid Refillable Shampoo

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Refillable Shampoo

Mild shampoos tend to get a bad rap, but Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo is an ideal mild cleanser for those with sensitive scalps. The ‘poo is suitable for all hair types and gently cleanses the hair and scalp with soothing ingredients like fair trade coconut oil, amino acids, and hydrolyzed wheat proteins.

Kiehl designed the bottle for an easy refill with a larger bottle of the cleanser, and the brand strives to reduce waste with its refillable bottle set and refill packages. Amino Acid Shampoo is one of the best travel-size shampoos for folks who want to keep their hair healthy, clean, and strong, and the bottle is also TSA-compliant at 2.6 oz.

6. Act+Acre Cold-Pressed Balancing Shampoo

Act+Acre Cold-Pressed Balancing Shampoo

Cold-Pressed Balancing Shampoo takes haircare a step further by focusing on the needs of your hair and scalp. Free from sulfates and silicones, it’s a nutrient-dense cleansing formula that removes dirt, oil, and product build-up without stressing out the skin.

Act+Acre’s cleanser removes pollution and everyday buildup while restoring luster and shine to your hair. Apple amino acids and baobab oil rejuvenate the scalp and hair and ensure the hair stays healthy and strong. Pair this travel-size shampoo with the Act+Acre Conditioner to create the perfect hair day.

7. Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo

Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo

Bumble and Bumble’s Sunday Shampoo is a no-brainer for those seeking a deep cleansing treatment. The formula works well for all hair types but not for color-treated hair. Each gorgeous blue bottle is 2 oz and provides enough washes for a few weeks of intense clarifying treatments.

Sunday Shampoo is not ideal for travelers looking for a gentle daily cleanser or those with skin sensitivities. It’s an excellent match for active folks engaged in physical activity or traveling to a hot, sweaty vacation spot who will need a deep clean.

The 13 best sulfate-free shampoos for color-treated hair .

Alexandra Engler

As someone who has been coloring her hair for—oh, let's just say a while!—I know how vital upkeep is. And a good shampoo-and-conditioner combo can be make or break for vibrant, lasting color.

Of course, the opposite is true, too: If you use a lesser-quality product, you run the risk of stripping your hue and further damaging your hair.

See, the process of coloring your hair works by opening up the hair shaft so you can either deposit pigment (as is the case with darkening or changing the tone) or remove pigment (as is the case with bleaching or lightening). This means two things for color maintenance. The first is that this process can be hard on hair. You have to treat it with extra hydration and strengthening nutrients. You should also skip drying sulfates, too, as these will speed up your color's natural fading process.

The second is that the color can fade or tinge pretty easily, so you need something that's going to help protect the pigment and keep it from picking up unwanted undertones. And as an old hair colorist adage goes, why spend all that money on hair color if you're not going to tend to it properly? So if you do dye your hair, I encourage you to find the highest-quality option that fits within your budget (don't worry: there are good shampoos at every price point).

Here, I rounded up my favorites as someone with decades of hair-coloring experience—who happens to know a thing or two about cosmetic ingredients, too.

EVOLVh SmartColor Color Protecting Shampoo

This clean formula helps color retention, reduces frizz , and tends to breakage. Kiwi seed oil is a lightweight hydrator that also has free-radical-fighting antioxidants. Soy amino acids fortify the cuticle. And avocado oil cushions the hair, reducing physical wear and tear during the wash process.

For good color vibes, reach for this rose-quartz-infused formula. But don't worry; it also includes plenty of healthy hair actives. Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

You simply can't have a list of products for color-treated hair and not include Olaplex. Their outstanding proprietary is shown to reduce damage and strengthen hair by relinking broken bonds . (Making it also great for heat damage.) For color this is excellent because not only does it help repair any hair shaft injury that happened during the dyeing process—but healthy strands reflect light better, making your overall color look more beautiful.

dae Daily Shampoo

Color-care and daily-wash approved, this contains a trio of desert plants known for their hydration and longevity. First up there's a hibiscus flower extract that can aid in gentle, natural cleansing of the hair and scalp (read: nonstripping), then it layers in aloe vera, which is a humectant rich in vitamins and minerals to restore strength and hydration. Finally, there's false daisy extract, which can actually help an irritated scalp, too.

Virtue Recovery Shampoo

Virtue is an all-time favorite brand for this beauty editor: It's almost impossible to describe how soft and nurtured your hair will feel after washing until you try it with your own hands. The star of the show is their innovative keratin, which is identical to the keratin that makes up 90% of human hair. It repaves and refills keratin, repairing damaged hair with each use. It also contains hydrolyzed quinoa, baobab seed oil, and grapefruit extract.

Innersense Color Awakening Hair Bath

A very gentle shampoo, this formula contains a host of ingredients that can nurture dry hair and add shine. A few of our favorites? There's hydrolyzed quinoa protein to help restore strength. For lipids and hydration, there's shea butter, pumpkin seed oil, cucumber, and avocado oil. And finally, it contains antioxidants from green tea and mangos. Just to name a few.

JVN Undamage Strengthening Shampoo

A safe bet for those with color-treated hair is to opt for repairing shampoos (look for buzzwords like "damage," "strengthening," and so on). And this new option does wonders for frayed and worn strands. We particularly love the plant-derived squalane and hemisqualane, which are natural silicone alternatives that not only give hair that silky slip but improve the health in the process. Opt for this option if you are silicone-avoidant.

Undamage Strengthening Shampoo, JVN ($18) Amazon.com , Sephora.com

JVN Undamage Strengthening Shampoo

AG Hair Natural Balance Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

Apple cider vinegar is excellent for hair care, as it can balance the pH of the scalp and close the cuticle for high shine. (There's a reason ACV rinses are so popular!) This shampoo infuses organic ACV, as well as organic aloe vera and argan oil to hydrate and condition the strands.

The Best Travel Size Shampoos for Healthy Hair

Branded content. Us Weekly has affiliate partnerships so we may receive compensation for some links to products and services.

Traveling can stress out your hair and skin, whether it's caused by small hotel shampoos that steal every scrap of moisture from your scalp or your grandma's giant bottle of Suave shampoo that she's had since the early 00s. That's why having a premium travel-size shampoo can go a long way in helping you look and feel your best.

Finding the right travel-size shampoo can prevent frizz, breakage, and dryness while keeping your hair healthy and full of life. If you head into your local grocery store, you'll find a section of travel products with brands that may not work for your hair type, so we've done the research to find affordable premium haircare products so you can live your best-hair-life.

Not all shampoo formulas will deliver the results you're after. When browsing, ensure the cleanser provides the proper nutrients or moisture for your best hair day-even while traveling.

Hair-loving ingredients : Look for plant-based ingredients that ensure the hair and scalp get clean without removing moisture. The best travel-size shampoos contain naturally derived ingredients suitable for all hair types.

We've gathered the best travel-size shampoos so you can keep your hair healthy and strong.

1. Blu Atlas Shampoo (Included in Essentials Travel Set)

Travel often results in dry, damaged hair, but that doesn't have to be your norm.

Allow yourself to unwind and get your whole body squeaky clean after stressful travel days with a shampoo that focuses on nourishing ingredients. Native products harness potent plant-derived ingredients to deliver a premium grooming experience. Check the back of the bottle to see Native's brand transparency in action and learn more about naturally derived ingredients in the ‘poo.

Cucumber & Mint Volumizing Shampoo adds extra oomph to flat, tired hair while cleaning and removing product build-up and oil. Native shampoos are always paraben-free, sulfate-free, silicone-free, and dye-free, so you don't have to worry about breakage or damage.

4. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo

Treat your scalp to a hydrating wash with Pureology's Hydrate Shampoo. As a premium haircare brand, Pureology brings together luxury ingredients for an elevated cleansing ritual. As you wash your strands, the shower steam whips up a spa-like aromatherapy treatment with the cleanser's soothing blend of lavender, patchouli, and bergamot.

5. Kiehl's Amino Acid Refillable Shampoo

Mild shampoos tend to get a bad rap, but Kiehl's Amino Acid Shampoo is an ideal mild cleanser for those with sensitive scalps.

Cold-Pressed Balancing Shampoo takes haircare a step further by focusing on the needs of your hair and scalp. Free from sulfates and silicones, it's a nutrient-dense cleansing formula that removes dirt, oil, and product build-up without stressing out the skin.

Act+Acre's cleanser removes pollution and everyday buildup while restoring luster and shine to your hair. Apple amino acids and baobab oil rejuvenate the scalp and hair and ensure the hair stays healthy and strong. Pair this travel-size shampoo with the Act+Acre Conditioner to create the perfect hair day.

7. Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo

Bumble and Bumble's Sunday Shampoo is a no-brainer for those seeking a deep cleansing treatment.

It's an excellent match for active folks engaged in physical activity or traveling to a hot, sweaty vacation spot who will need a deep clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a travel-size shampoo.

A travel-size shampoo is a TSA-friendly bottle that's 3.4 oz (100 ml) or smaller. Travel-size shampoos fit in toiletry bags that are designed for easy access.

How many washes can you get out of a travel-size shampoo?

Most travel-size shampoos (3.4 oz) last 12 uses. This number may change depending on the length or density of your hair. Those with long hair or thick, dense curls may need to use more shampoo each time they wash, resulting in fewer washes.

Can you take travel-size shampoo on a plane?

You can bring travel-size shampoo bottles that are 3.4 oz (100 ml) or smaller on a plane. We recommend double-checking the size of products in your travel toiletry kit before flying so they don't get taken by TSA. (Some airports allow travelers to mail items to their homes if they are not allowed through security).
