When I traveled to the Southeast USA, I was thrilled for a chance to tour the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC — a stunning 250-room French Renaissance château nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Biltmore Estate is a refreshing taste of European architecture in the middle of the American South. After my husband and I canceled our fall trip to Europe due to Covid, visiting the Biltmore felt like an exciting way to relive what would have been our European vacation!

We discovered many helpful tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, during our visit that I am excited to share with you! But first, here’s a little history lesson on the Biltmore!

History of the Biltmore Estate

George Vanderbilt opened Biltmore House on Christmas Eve in 1895 after six years of construction. George lived on the property with his wife, Edith, and daughter, Cornelia. The house was not opened to the public until the 1930s to generate income to preserve the estate. 

Today, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville is the largest private home in America and attracts over one million visitors per year. The Biltmore offers visitors an impressive history, remarkable architecture, vintage art, and breathtaking gardens. No matter what your interest is, you’ll find something to love about the Biltmore. 

Tips for Visiting the Biltmore Estate—Is it Worth the Cost?  

I’ll be honest—I was skeptical about visiting the Biltmore because of the cost. Depending on the time of year you visit, Biltmore Experience tickets can cost anywhere from $94 to $114 per person. 

Although the Biltmore is expensive to visit, I can assure you that it is definitely worth the cost. We spent the entire day at the Biltmore House & Gardens and Antler Hill Village and felt that we definitely got our money’s worth. We couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a day in Asheville! 

Tips for Visiting the Biltmore Estate— Where to Stay in Asheville, NC

Unfortunately, you can’t stay in the Biltmore when visiting, but you can stay at several excellent locations close by! There are excellent hotels near the Biltmore that offer a range of prices to accommodate those looking to relax in luxury or find a budget-friendly stay.  

Here are a few of my recommendations: 

• The Inn on Biltmore Estate ($$$$)  – Pamper yourself with a luxury stay on the Biltmore Estate to enjoy the on-site spa, heated pool, and fine-dining restaurants.
• Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate ($$$)  – One of the best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate? Stay as close to the winery as you can! The Village Hotel is located in the heart of Antler Hill Village with close access to phenomenal restaurants, shopping, and the world-famous Biltmore Winery.
• Grand Bohemian Hotel Asheville ($$$$)  – Enjoy a unique, luxury stay in the Biltmore Village, just three miles from Downtown Asheville.
• Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites – Asheville – Biltmore Village Area ($$)  – Clean, budget-friendly stay just under a mile away from the Biltmore Estate.
• Courtyard Asheville Biltmore Village ($$)  – Modern, comfortable, and clean stay located about a mile from the Biltmore Estate.

Tips for Visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville  

Before visiting the Biltmore, I had a lot of questions about what the experience would be like. As it turns out, I learned a lot during my visit to the Biltmore that I want to share with you to help your visit go seamlessly! 

Here are nine tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, that will make your experience unforgettable! 

1. Buy Your Tickets in Advance  

As I mentioned earlier, The Biltmore has over one million visitors per year—which, if you do the math, is over 2,500 visitors per day! Even though there are many spots available to tour the Biltmore house each day, you might be surprised to know that tickets sell out quickly—especially during the weekends, holidays, and Christmas season. 

One of the most important tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to buy your tickets ahead of time to ensure that you reserve a ticket for the day that you want to visit. 

2. Your Ticket Time is for the Biltmore House Tour  

One of the most critical tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is that the time on your ticket is for your  self-guided house tour , NOT your entry to the estate.  

My husband and I made the mistake of assuming that our ticket time was when we were supposed to arrive at the estate. Because of this mistake, we were nearly an hour late for our tour. Thankfully, the attendant allowed us to tour the Biltmore home; however, I would advise you against making the same mistake we did!  

My suggestion would be to  book an early afternoon tour  and  arrive at the estate mid-morning  to ensure that you aren’t rushed or late for your tour time. When you arrive at the estate, you can enjoy the light crowds, take photos, walk around the gardens, and explore the shops before your afternoon tour time.   

I wish someone would have told me these tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate before we went. It would have been a lifesaver!

3. Eat a Big Breakfast  

The Biltmore is a full-day experience, and if you’re like me, you’ll be so busy exploring that you’ll forget to eat! 

One of my best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to eat a big breakfast before arriving because most of the dining options near the Biltmore House and Gardens are expensive. 

Here are some of the most popular local breakfast spots in Asheville to stop at before you arrive at the Biltmore: 

• Vortex Doughnuts —Homemade, unique flavored doughnuts with gourmet coffee (they make their caramel sauce in-house, and it’s fantastic!) 
• Double D’s Coffee & Desserts —Double-decker bus serving coffee & sweet treats (cash only!) 
• Biscuit Head —Massive biscuits with a variety of toppings and pairings (this is a local favorite) 

4. Pay for the Audio Guide  

I wish I would have purchased the audio guide during our tour of the Biltmore—I had no clue that the tour would take us through three stories and nearly 30 rooms in the Biltmore home! 

Although the Biltmore home’s architecture and design are gorgeous on their own, the home’s history is remarkable, too. For just $12, your audio guide can become your tour guide, telling you all about George Vanderbilt’s family, the lifestyle of the people who lived there, interesting facts about the home, and so much more.  

I tend to skip audio guides to save money—but unfortunately, that was the wrong choice for the Biltmore. The tour is much more extensive than you would expect, and it is an excellent value for what you pay.

5. Plan to Spend the Whole Day Exploring  

As I mentioned earlier, the Biltmore is a full-day experience, so one of the most critical tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to plan to spend your entire day there!

Here’s how much time you can expect to spend at each location at the Biltmore Estate: 

• The Biltmore Estate —1-2 hours 
• The Gardens —2 hours 
• Shopping —1 hour 
• Winery —1 hour 
• Antler Hill Village —1-2 hours 

It’s very likely you’ll spend 6-8 hours exploring the Biltmore Estate. You won’t want to miss anything! 

6. Don’t Skip the Biltmore Gardens  

I had no idea how stunning and extensive the Biltmore Gardens were! The Biltmore House is impressive, but in my opinion, the gardens are the real showstopper.  

The Biltmore Gardens and Trails are divided into nine sections:  

• Library and South Terraces —Spectacular views of the surrounding trees and mountains with a relaxing place to sit. This garden is one of the best spots to take photos! One of my personal favorite tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to grab a drink or snack and munch on while admiring the view in the South Terraces!
• Italian Garden —Watch koi and goldfish swim in the three formal Italian water gardens.  
• Shrub Garden —Walking path that features golden rain trees, river birch trees, and maple trees.  
• Spring Garden —Walking path that features white pines, hemlocks, and blooming shrubs.  
• Conservatory —The Conservatory is a HUGE glass-roofed building home to hundreds of unique warm-weather plants, including orchids, ferns, and palm trees.  
• Azalea Garden —Walkway that leads from the Conservatory to the Bass Pond and contains gorgeous azaleas and evergreen trees.  

• Walled Garden —Two lovely arbors that feature seasonal plants, like tulips in the spring and mums in the fall. There were also squash plants growing here when we visited!  
• Rose Garden —The name says it all! Gorgeous roses that bloom year-round.  
• Bass Pond & Boat House —The most peaceful retreat at the Biltmore, this bass pond is the perfect spot to rest your feet from walking and relax. One of the most secretive tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to carve out 30 minutes to an hour simply relaxing by the bass pond.

I loved the Biltmore Gardens! My favorite places to explore were the Conservatory, Azalea Gardens, and Bass Pond, but I would suggest visiting them all to determine your own favorites! 

7. Wear Comfortable Shoes  

I clocked in over 12,000 steps during our visit to the Biltmore. By the end of the day, my feet were killing me, even though I was wearing supportive shoes. That being said, one of my best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to wear comfortable shoes, like these Clarks Women’s Ankle Boots , especially if you plan to tour the house and visit the gardens. Your feet will thank you later! 

8. Visit Antler Hill Village  

After spending a day at the Biltmore House and Gardens, one of the best tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is to visit Antler Hill Village! Antler Hill Village is where the Biltmore Winery is located and is also home to restaurants like Bistro, Cedric’s Tavern, and Village Social. 

If you are planning to enjoy dinner at Antler Hill Village, I would suggest making a reservation ahead of time—the waitlist can get long, especially in the evenings.

9. Enjoy Your Free Wine Tasting  

Your Biltmore ticket includes a complimentary wine tasting at the Winery in Antler Village if you are over the age of 21. The Biltmore Winery was opened by George Vanderbilt’s grandson in 1985, and since then, has been serving wines made from the estate’s vineyards. 

During your wine tasting, you’ll have the opportunity to sample five wines. After your time in the Tasting Room, you can browse the Wine Shop to find a bottle to bring home or walk across to the Wine Bar to savor a glass of your favorite wine. 

Your complimentary wine tasting is by reservation only, so I suggest visiting the Biltmore Winery to secure your reservation when you arrive at The Antler Hill Village.

Overall, the Biltmore Estate is a can’t-miss attraction when visiting Asheville. The Biltmore is also an excellent location for a weekend trip, romantic getaway, bachelorette party, and so much more! These tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate will help your visit go smoothly and ensure that you have an incredible time.

Imagine that it’s Christmas 1895. George Vanderbilt welcomes his family & friends for the first time of his new home, the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. Now, the Biltmore is not just an ordinary home or even lavish mansion, it is America’s largest private home with 175,000 square feet and 250 rooms. Inside, thousands of ornaments reflect the soft glow of candles, fireplaces, and twinkle lights. The Biltmore House is magical at Christmas – complete with 55 elaborate hand-decorated trees including the favorite 35ft. live fraser fir in the banquet hall, a thousand poinsettias, miles of garland, and live music. Throughout the estate, find 100+ decorated trees with 25,000+ ornaments, 1.5miles of fresh garlands, 500 wreaths and sprays, 2,000 poinsettias and other favorite holiday plants. Walk through America’s largest home, as magnificent today as it was more than a century ago, see displays of art, vintage clothing, furniture and priceless objects you see throughout the luxurious home that are from George and Edith Vanderbilt original collection that illustrate the lives of the Vanderbilt family.  Dinner at the Estate is also included.

As a casual and relaxing way to finish the Biltmore experience, visit the Antler Hill Village & Winery for wine tasting and options for shopping, and more.

Will also visit the Andy Griffith Museum which provides a permanent place for the world’s largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia. The Museum is located a half-mile from Andy’s boyhood home. It houses items collected by childhood friend Emmett Forrest. The museum includes iconic signs from the show’s courthouse doors that read: “Sheriff’ and Justice of Peace.” There are also mementos from Don Knott’s who played Barney Fife, actress Betty Lynn who plated Thelma Lou and George Lindsey who played Goober. While in Mount Airy, NC, we will also drive by Andy’s Griffith home place, a stop at the Courthouse, Wally’s Service Station and Snappy Diner. This and so much more on this fun getaway.

Here are 30+ photos that I captured during our private tour of Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Last month I shared our 3 Day Itinerary while staying at The Inn, the luxury hotel on Biltmore Estate, overlooking Blue Ridge Mountains.

Why visit Biltmore Estate?

At Biltmore Estate you will find Biltmore House, the largest privately owned home in the United States . The home is 175,000 square feet and features 250 rooms.

When is the best time to visit Biltmore in Asheville?

Biltmore looks beautiful all year round, so it depends on your interests! If you are looking for autumn foliage, then October is the best month. November and December offer Christmas at Biltmore, and during Spring and Summer, you can explore the gardens, grounds, and trails.

Biltmore’s 8,000 acres include six gardens, a Conservatory, and nature trails.  After touring the house, be sure to make your way to the meticulously designed gardens!

• Book your tickets to Biltmore House in advance.
• Arrive early, and if possible book a private guided tour.
• After touring the house, explore the gardens and trails.
• Take a break and grab lunch at Stable Cafe.
• Enjoy the complimentary wine tasting at The Winery.
• Wear your most comfortable shoes, you will be doing a lot of walking!

Scenic biltmore house day trip in enchanting asheville.

In addition to the other tours we offer, C-Charlotte Tours offers a day trip to the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC, America’s largest home . Just a few hours away from Charlotte, NC , the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC is a world away!  We require a minimum of 6 people, of one party, and up to a max of 13 for the trip.  The cost of our transportation to and from the Biltmore is $119 per person, and does not include the tickets to the Biltmore House or any meals.  C-Charlotte Tours can arrange for discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more for entry to the House, which also includes the grounds and winery.  You will need to allow a minimum of 9 hours for this trip.  We leave Charlotte at 8 AM and return around 5 PM. Day 1: Monday, November 6

We make our way to Asheville, North Carolina, stopping in Abingdon, Virginia for the night. We will check into the Country Inn & Suites – Abingdon and have dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Tuesday, November 7

We begin the day with breakfast at our hotel before departing for Asheville, NC. Upon arrival, we will have lunch at the Moose Café , a local southern eatery.

This afternoon we will go on a guided sightseeing tour of Asheville and the local area. Then we will check into the Hampton Inn & Suites Asheville Biltmore Village .

This evening we will attend the Blue Ridge Mountain Opry Dinner Show. The amazing Branded Heart Band offers toe-tapping Bluegrass, Country and Mountain music, topped off with home humor. We’ll enjoy the show while tasting some of the absolute finest southern-style barbeque in Western North Carolina.

Day 3: Wednesday, November 8

After breakfast at the hotel, we will go on a guided tour of Asheville & Blue Ridge Parkway including a stop at the Folks Art Center .

Lunch will be on our own in Downtown Asheville. We will have the afternoon to explore the area. Downtown Asheville is filled with unique restaurants, boutiques, artisan shops, galleries, and so much more.

Dinner will be at one of the delicious restaurants at Biltmore. Following the meal, we will attend a Candlelight Evening at the Biltmore . We’ll watch candlelight, firelight, and live music bring holiday warmth to the extravagant holiday décor of the Biltmore House. It will certainly be an evening to remember.

Day 4: Thursday, November 9

We have breakfast at the hotel and then depart for Bristol, Virginia. Here, we will visit the Birthplace of Country Music Museum . The museum explores how evolving sound technology shaped the success of the 1927 Bristol Sessions and highlights how this rich heritage still thrives in the Appalachian region and beyond. The exciting story of these recording sessions and their far-reaching influence come alive through multiple theater experiences and various displays. Lunch will be included at the museum.

This afternoon we will travel to Staunton, Virginia. We will have dinner at Cracker Barrel and will provide a $25 gift card to go towards your meal. Tonight, we check into Best Western Staunton Inn .

Day 5: Friday, November 10

We will have breakfast at the hotel before departing for home.

Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House (or Biltmore Mansion), the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States.

Asheville, NC Sightseeing Tour

The National Gingerbread House Competition is a favorite Asheville holiday tradition that has taken place for 30 years.  This nationally-known competition and display features whimsical and elaborate, handmade gingerbread houses of every size, shape, complexity and theme. You'll find quaint rustic cabins, gumdrop-adorned castles and sugar spun landscapes that'll likely inspire your own gingerbread traditions.

As you enjoy the Gingerbread creations, you'll notice The Omni Grove Park Inn and its Great Hall entrance way come alive with gorgeous decorations, music and the smells of evergreen, sugar and spice.Make sure to see the The Great Gingerbread House, a life-sized Gingerbread House modeled after the historic hotel.

Winter Lights at North Carolina Arboretum

Winter Lights is a spectacular open-air walk-through light show made from over one million lights! Located at the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, North Carolina, this year's event features favorites like the famously tall 50-foot lighted tree and the Quilt Garden, along with enchanting new details designed to delight and surprise. There are indoor warming stations available, and hot drinks for purchase.

-Marinated Beef Kabobs: 2 Marinated Skewers of Filet, peppers, onions, and mushrooms grilled served over rice finished with a citrus salsa

-Australian Sea Bass: Pan fried Australian Sea Bass served over rice paired with 2 seared sea scallops and 2 pan fried jumbo shrimp finished with a Sherry Cream Sauce

-Chicken Marsala: Grilled Chicken Breast served with Mushroom Marsala sauce paired with Fettuccini Alfredo

-Pork Chops: 2 Herb Encrusted Pork Chops served over Risotto finished with Dijon Cream Sauce

Includes house salad,a side of sauteed vegetables, and chocolate cake for dessert. Non-alcoholic beverages are included.

-Biltmore does not accept cash. Acceptable forms of payment are credit or debit cards at this time. Guests may carry small personal bags no larger than 19” x 14” x 9” Backpacks/ wheeled bags are prohibited.

-Your visit to Biltmore House includes three floors and several flights of stairs. Because of the historic architecture, only the First and Second Floors are accessible by wheelchair. Guests who are unable to go to the Third Floor and Basement may visit the designated Second Floor rest area and watch a video of the rooms they are unable to access.

Eyre has a select quantity of wheelchair accessible motorcoaches available; therefore, we suggest you contact a Travel Advisor to discuss any needs you may have before reserving your trip.

The Comfort Suites Outlet Center is conveniently located by the Asheville Outlet mall and just minutes from Biltmore Estate and downtown Asheville. The hotel features a Fitness Room.

The Harbor Inn Seafood Restaurant is located adjacent to the hotel and there are several restaurants within walking distance.

Guestrooms include coffee maker, hair dryer, iron/board, microwave, and refrigerator. Hotel is 100% non-smoking.

Greetings, Travelers!

We enjoy seeing art, furniture, decorations and will spend a lot of time photographing them: How long should dedicated "eye candy" fanatics expect to spend in the mansion?

Are there any elevators that my wife (walks with a cane) can use during the visit?

The Biltmore website says to allow 45 minutes to get from the entry gates to the mansion--is that really necessary??

There is a small elevator but it only services the ground and second floor. It dos not go up to the third floor or down to the lower levels.

The 45 minute included getting through the entry point, the 4 mile drive from there to the the shuttle/parking lots at 25 mph max, and time to walk through the grounds to the House entrance or to catch the next shuttle . If everything is working perfectly, that is more than enough time. If things are backed up at the entry gate, the parking lots are nearly full so you have to drive around looking for a spot, the shuttles are backed up, the House is full and tour start times are delayed, e.g., during the Christmas holidays, 45 minutes. Thus the 45 minute recommendation.

I got lucky to catch the Downton Abbey: The Exhibition when I was there.

Across the sprawling Biltmore estate, visitors can be found picnicking, playing with their dogs, sunbathing, and enjoying all that this little slice of heaven has to offer.

3. Eating at Biscuit Head and White Duck Taco

Attention all foodies! Asheville is a top food destination, and I had the pleasure of enjoying a handful of 10/10 meals; Biscuit Head and White Duck Taco.

Biscuit Head is a must-visit spot for the best Southern-style breakfast and brunch. Indulge in their Southern Scramble with pimento cheese, caramelized onions, and tomato, served with a side of pimento cheese grits and a mouth-watering second-to-none biscuit.

Tip : Try their gravy flight for the ultimate dipping experience!

For lunch, head to White Duck Taco – a local favorite for creative street tacos, queso dip, refried beans, and killer sangria, red and white. Come hungry and leave satisfied at any of their three locations.

Forest Hideaway: Renovated Silversmith Cottage in North Carolina Shines Anew for $1.4M

A cottage where a silversmith once worked his magic still radiates with its original charm.

Renowned Arts and Crafts-era silversmith and architect William Waldo Dodge built the house in Biltmore Forest, NC , in 1927 as his residence and workshop.

Recently reimagined by its current owners, the home is being offered for $1.4 million.

Dodge was a leading figure in Asheville’s architectural scene. He died in 1971 after building historically significant buildings in the area, many of which are still standing.

Listing agent Marilyn Wright , with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, helped the sellers buy the home, which she calls a “one-of-a-kind property.” She remembers her initial impression of the place.

“I saw the potential that day of what it could be, and that’s what it is today,” she says. “It’s incredible.”

Many of Dodge’s original design elements remain, including the weathervane, railings, light fixtures, and leaded windows, among others.

Some “windows are original, and the handles are each handcrafted,” Wright says. Dodge “had some local artisans come and do the carvings that you see, and there are gargoyles on the house. It has a lot of details that are fitting for the area that he pulled into the house.”

One bedroom, two baths, and lots of comfy living space comprise the 1,439-square-foot cottage.

The kitchen is outfitted with under-counter appliances and a gas log fireplace. Wright says it’s her favorite part of the house.

“The light from the old windows and the leaded glass is almost like you’re looking through a kaleidoscope when the sun is shining,” she says. “You’re overlooking the front lawn and the rear gardens. It is a true forest cottage.”

The sellers bought the house from George Vanderbilt ’s grandson and have used it as a second home. They decided to put it on the market, because they weren’t spending as much time there as they once did.

So, what type of buyer might be attracted to this enchanting abode? Wright thinks it could be someone familiar with the area.

“Maybe they grew up in Biltmore Forest and want a little something in Asheville , and they appreciate the architectural elements and significance of the home,” Wright speculates.

Biltmore Forest is a tiny town between the famed Biltmore Estate , the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Asheville . It’s the second wealthiest town in the state—impressive, given its population of just over 1,400.

“They have their own police department, they have their own garbage sanitation department,” Wright notes. “You have a town hall. It’s just a very Americana, small-town feel—but it is an affluent area.”

As for their list of 40, top five food and beverage recommendations (not including anything already mentioned) were:

Wedding Bells for John and Cornelia Cecil

Biltmore has witnessed countless celebrations over the last 129 years, but perhaps none so grand as the wedding of George and Edith Vanderbilt’s only child, Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt , to the Honorable John Francis Amherst Cecil .

April 29, 2024, marks the 100th anniversary of this monumental event. To celebrate, let’s take a look at John and Cornelia’s wedding by the numbers!

Wedding bells are ringing

Cornelia Vanderbilt had eight bridesmaids . Among them were her school friends from Miss Madeira’s, cousins, cousins-to-be, and her best friend, Rachel “Bunchy” Strong, as maid of honor.

John Cecil had a matching eight ushers , including Hugh Tennant, his best man and superior officer at the British Embassy in Washington, DC. Several of his groomsmen were men he lived with upon arriving in the United States in 1923, a group known as the “British Bachelors.” Others included his cousin Robert Cecil, childhood friend Benjamin Bernard, and Cornelia’s cousin John Nicholas Brown.

The wedding party also included two flower girls : Helen Raoul and Peggy Morgan, both daughters of family friends in Asheville.

Quantifying the guest list

The Cecil wedding was a high-profile event celebrating the union of not only two individuals, but two countries.

The guest list reflected the prominence of both the Vanderbilt and Cecil families. It included aristocracy, diplomats, politicians, and socialites of both the United States and United Kingdom—all mingling with the estate’s residents and employees, for whom a section of All Souls Church was reserved.

In total, 500 people were invited to the ceremony held at All Souls Church, while another 2,500 received a separate invitation to attend just the reception at Biltmore. While many invitations were respectfully declined, the Cecil’s welcomed more than 1,000 attendees !

Renovations for accommodations

Although many guests stayed at Grove Park Inn, Biltmore Country Club, and Kenilworth Inn, those closest to Cornelia were invited to stay in Biltmore House. A group of 43 family members and friends occupied the 35 bedrooms —including the Oak Sitting Room, where members of the bridal party stayed together.

Because the wedding marked the most guests ever accommodated in the house at one time, preparations began as early as March 15, 1924—before the Cecils formally announced their engagement . Some rooms were renovated, while others were extensively cleaned before being furnished. That the house was ready for a record number of guests in just six weeks is a testament to the skill of Biltmore’s domestic staff.

Cupid’s innocent greeting

Following the wedding ceremony, 44 children of Biltmore Estate employees lined up outside All Souls Church. The newlyweds recessed from the church down an aisle formed by the children, each of whom held spring blossoms that they crossed to form an arch. At the end of this receiving line, they were greeted by Pollyann Foster, one of the estate’s youngest residents, dressed as Cupid.

Two become one

As guests entered for the reception, they were greeted by two flags hanging in the Entrance Hall: an American Flag and a British Union Jack. During the wedding breakfast served at the reception, both God Save the King and The Star-Spangled Banner were played. The couple turned toward their respective flags as the national anthem of each country rang out, signifying the union of two countries through their marriage.

Gifts of generosity

Guests of John and Cornelia Cecil celebrated the couple in style, lavishing them with thoughtful gifts. Among the wedding gifts were 70 pieces of silver, 53 pieces of china, 25 pieces of jewelry, 20 books , and two pieces of Tiffany glass .

Several notable gifts include a Jade Vanity Case, Jade Hatpin, and Amethyst Pendant . Not all gifts were opulent; servants of Biltmore House gifted heartwarming, homemade gifts–and even a puppy!

In return, Cornelia and John gifted their guests a sweet treat from Maison Rauscher of Washington.

In honor of the 100th anniversary, our Floral team has re-created the massive floral wedding bell under which John and Cornelia Cecil stood in the Tapestry Gallery to receive their guests. Covered in carnations and sweet peas, the decorative bell will be displayed from late April to May 23 as part of our Spring at Biltmore celebration.
