Whether you are looking for something to perk up your morning commute or want to sip a hot cup of joe on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere, a portable coffee maker is an absolute game-changer.

From single cup heaters to coffee makers you can share with friends, a portable coffee maker is a travel must-have for those who never want to miss a coffee fix, wherever they are headed.

Convenient Coffee Maker

Sure, you could nip into the nearest Starbucks (or other coffee shops available) and grab a paper cup on the go. But being able to brew your favorite hot beverage is far more satisfying and much more cost-effective.

Portable coffee makers are, among other things:

An automatic coffee maker can brew up a cup at the touch of a button. Your morning cup can be just as tasty as it is at home, even on the road.

Fancy lattes and other brews can be expensive. Nice for the occasional treat, but buying 1 every day can soon add up. Making your own will save you money from the get-go.

Compact, discreet, and easy to take with you, a portable coffee maker can fit in your carry-on bag and be produced for a brew whenever you need it.

Blendable To Suit Your Tastes

Once you get used to using your coffee maker, you will soon be brewing like a barista as you mix blends and flavors to create your perfect cup.

Because not all coffee makers are the same, they offer varying ways to brew your coffee on the go.

The most common types of coffee makers include:

Pour-over Coffee Makers

Possibly the best option for longer journeys, pour-over coffee makers are compact and light as a feather. Carry just a few grams of your favorite blend and voilà — a perfect coffee on the go. The only downside to these types of coffee makers is that you may have to wait a few minutes for your brew.

French Press

French press coffee makers work by immersing all of the coffee in hot water to capture more of its natural flavor, resulting in a rich, strong cup of coffee. While the coffee may be better, the cleaning processes take longer, and some French press coffee makers are more portable than others.

Espresso Makers

If you like your coffee dark, a portable espresso maker will give you big flavors on the go. As the machine applies pressure to the beans, the maximum flavor and oils spill out, giving the same result as bigger coffee machines, but in a compact and completely portable format. These models are the most expensive but will be a big hit with true coffee connoisseurs.

Hot Tip: Check out our favorite travel mugs to go with your travel coffee maker.

When choosing your perfect portable coffee maker, consider the following:

Portability

Portable Coffee Maker

One of the most important features of a portable coffee maker is that it needs to be “portable” — the clue is in the title. Some types of coffee makers are far larger and bulkier than others, so look for one that suits your needs.

Whichever type of coffee maker you favor, it needs to be easy to carry and not take up too much space. Otherwise, you may as well leave it back at home.

Hot Tip: Look for lightweight materials like silicone, and consider coffee makers that are complete and without the need for lots of other fancy accessories.

Coffee Maker Durability

Traveling can take its toll on your possessions, and you need to make sure that you buy appliances and devices that will go the distance. Stay clear of delicate glass coffee makers and opt instead for reinforced materials such as plastic, silicone, or even aluminum for guaranteed durability.

Brewing Time

A portable coffee maker is almost pointless if you have to wait half of your journey time for it to brew. Choose appliances that take between 30 seconds to 5 minutes to brew, and you can enjoy speedy coffee on the go.

Ease of Cleaning

Easy to clean coffee maker

Dirty coffee is not good coffee. Consider where you are headed and how easy the coffee maker will be to clean when you get there. If you are hotel-based or have an apartment, you can enjoy the luxuries of a hot tap and maybe even a dishwasher, but if you are camping in the middle of nowhere, you should choose a coffee maker that is easy to clean, with minimal components.

Coffee Maker Volume

Coffee for 1? 2? Or maybe more than a few? The size of your coffee maker could determine how grumpy your fellow travelers will be in the morning. You can be the chief coffee maker for as many as you want, but remember that the larger the capacity of the appliance, the bigger and bulkier it is likely to be.

Nearly every appliance or device you take with you will eventually need charging or require some form of power to make it work. Your portable coffee maker will be no different, but you need to be sure how you need to power it before you go.

Those that don’t run on elbow grease alone will run on electricity or batteries. To ensure your charging needs match your destination, read the instructions and reviews before you buy.

For some, whether or not to buy a portable coffee maker isn’t an issue because the answer is a resounding “Yes.” But for others, buying a portable coffee maker for travel may seem silly. Why would you want to pack a coffee maker when there are countless places to get coffee?

You may want to buy a portable coffee maker for three good reasons. You don’t need to be a coffee lover to appreciate these reasons. Do any of the reasons appeal to you?

Get coffee when you want it

If you’re anything like me, you want coffee within fifteen minutes of opening your sticky eyelids and rubbing away the last remnants of sleep. The last thing you want is to shower, get dressed, and walk across the street to the coffee shop for your first brew of the day.

If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can make coffee whenever you want. There is no need to wait in line at the coffee shop or get dressed before you can enjoy that first cup.

Make coffee the way you want it

If you drink coffee regularly, you probably have a particular way you like it. A specific water temperature, a certain volume, and a selection of additives like sugar and cream. But when you travel, you relinquish control over your coffee and rely on the source – a gas station, fast food restaurant, or coffee shop.

If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can make your coffee just as you like. You can use the same beans or pods, brew the coffee at the same temperature and volume, and add the same ingredients after brewing. And if you travel with a portable fridge , you can keep your coffee creamer chilled between stops on your road trips.

Spend less on coffee and more money on travel

Good coffee isn’t cheap and cheap coffee isn’t good. And while it’s fun to explore local coffee shops while traveling, they can quickly become a drain on your travel budget. Even those one-dollar coffees at the gas station will add up over a week. If you travel with a portable coffee maker, you can save the money you would have spent and put it towards a museum admission or kayak rental.

There are lots of ways of brewing coffee and lots of ways to finish it after brewing. If you drink coffee at home, you likely already know your preferred method of brewing coffee. But when you travel, you might want to try something different, like espresso drinks for an extra caffeine boost or a pour over coffee for something quick and easy.

Here are the different types of portable coffee makers that you could easily pack for your next trip.

Espresso beans are regular coffee beans roasted longer and ground finer for brewing. The result is a richer flavor profile enjoyable in shots, double shots, or espresso drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos. At home, popular espresso machines like the Breville Barista Pro injects hot, pressurized water through a porta filter filled with finely ground beans.

While there are several portable espresso makers, they all require one key ingredient that is tricky while traveling: hot water. This requires a separate accessory for heating water before you can brew an espresso coffee, adding time and labor to the process.

Portable espresso makers are the easiest to travel with but have the heftiest price tag.

National Park Week 2024

Learn about the annual celebration of the National Park System and read my travel guides to national park units across the country.

Pour over is the easiest method for brewing coffee at home or on the road. A paper filter on top of a container is filled with ground coffee, and then hot water is methodically poured over the grounds. The Chemex Pour-Over Glass Coffeemaker is a popular model for pour over drinkers at home.

While traveling, the pour over is a quick and easy method for brewing coffee. But, like espresso drinks, it requires hot water. Portable pour over coffee makers are the least expensive of all the options and the easiest to pack.

French Press

The French Press method of coffee making is popular among backpackers and campers because of how easy it is. First, water is heated in a vessel to the desired temperature. Then, ground coffee is gently poured on top and allowed to soak for a specific time. Finally, a fine mesh filter is pressed down, pushing the coffee grounds to the bottom of the vessel so the coffee can be poured into a mug.

Like the two previous options, the French Press requires hot water. And this method tends to be the messiest, with the wet coffee grounds pressed into the bottom of the vessel that must be cleaned between each use. Portable French Press coffee makers are somewhere in the middle for price and portability, but from start to finish takes the longest amount of time to brew coffee.

Single Serve

Drip coffee is the most common way of making coffee in the world. From large 12-cup glass coffee pots to stainless steel carafes and single-serve options, there are more options for drip coffee machines than any other method of brewing coffee. Ground coffee is placed in a filter basket or a pod inserted, and the machine does the rest, heating water and slowly trickling through the grounds and into the coffee mug.

Single serve coffee makers are the most convenient for travel, especially the models that can use pods. The machines require power, but so does the kettle to make hot water for all the previous options. But the machines require minimal cleaning and manual labor, producing coffee faster and easier.

Portable single-serve coffee makers compete with espresso makers for price. The makers are also larger and near impossible to pack in checked luggage if flying. However, the makers are the best option for road trippers and use in hotel rooms.

Before confirming your purchase of a portable coffee maker, there are some things to consider when making your decision. This decision might be easy if you’re set on a particular coffee-making method. But if you’re open to new possibilities, there are options for your needs.

If you’re flying, space in your luggage is a premium. But even if you’re road tripping, space in your car is limited. Giant coffee makers permanently parked on your kitchen countertop are not ideal for travel, so look for smaller coffee makers that are easier to pack and carry.

Like the size, if you’re flying, weight is a premium. Small usually means light, but not always. Look for a lightweight, portable coffee maker that will be easier to carry in your luggage.

Compactness

Some portable coffee makers come in all-in-one packages that make it easy to keep up with the various components. These are the best coffee makers, especially if you’re checking in and out of multiple hotels on a road trip.

This is the least important concern for travel unless you’re camping in an Alaskan yurt. You’ll likely have power wherever you travel, but finding an available outlet can sometimes be difficult. And, if your portable coffee maker requires power, you won’t be using it in your vehicle without a good power inverter .

Most portable coffee makers are built on the principle of brewing single-serve coffee. Anything more required a large and hefty carafe. Be sure you’re happy with one serving at a time, especially if you need two or more coffees immediately in the morning.

Portable coffee makers are slower than their counterparts sitting at your house. Instead of always having hot water ready, a portable coffee maker must heat the water and brew the coffee with each serving. And that can become a problem if you need coffee for two or more people every morning. Some portable coffee makers are faster than others, which might be the deciding factor.

A lot of portable coffee makers must be cleaned between each use. This means it will take longer and more effort to make each coffee. You might want to consider a single-serve coffee maker that will be faster and easier to use.

Accessories

A world of accessories exists for every portable coffee maker, but some require additional items. Depending on your purchase, you may need a coffee grinder, hot water kettle, and travel case. The total investment increases along with the size and weight of your luggage.

The availability of hot water is probably the most important factor in the type of portable coffee maker you choose. Unless you enjoy cold coffee, you will need hot water to make your coffee. Single serve coffee machines have built-in heating elements, but many other types will require a hot water kettle. That means buying and packing an additional device in your luggage.

One of the benefits of a portable coffee maker is saving money on what you otherwise might have spent at Starbucks. Consider how many coffees you would need to brew to see a return on your investment before plunging into the world of portable coffee makers.

For every kind of retail item, there is a third-party accessory catalog. Portable coffee makers are no exception. But while some accessories are nice, others are necessary depending on what kind of coffee maker you buy.

Here are some accessories for portable – and not-so-portable – coffee makers you might want to add to your shopping cart.

Craft Coffee: A Manual If you’re new to drinking coffee or want to learn more about coffee making, Craft Coffee: A Manual is a good purchase. The 272-page book dives into the methods of brewing coffee, necessary hardware and accessories, and how to get the most flavor from the coffee beans.

The Best Portable Espresso Makers

lidl travel coffee maker

The Wacaco Minipresso GR is one of the easiest portable espresso makers. The compact all-in-one kit features a built-in scoop and cup, so everything conveniently remains together as you travel. And with the optional Minipresso Case , you can keep your investment protected.

The Wacaco Minipresso GR uses a semi-automatic hand pump to inject hot water through the filter basket. With a 2.35-ounce water reservoir, you can quickly brew two espresso shots with a few one-handed pumps. The manual operation means no dependency on power or batteries – this could be good or bad, depending on how you view manually crafting your coffee.

Like all portable espresso makers, the Wacaco Minipresso GR requires hot water from another source. The Jettle Electric Kettle is a perfect portable companion for getting boiling water. The Wacaco Minipresso GR measures just 7 inches tall and weighs less than a pound, making it easy to pack for travel.

Best Portable Espresso Maker

The OutIn Nano Portable Espresso Machine is a quantum leap beyond the competition with a built-in water heater. At 9″ tall and 3″ in diameter, it’s the same size and weight as the competition and a perfectly portable espresso maker.

The OutIn Nano uses a 7500mAh rechargeable battery for the effortless brewing of espresso shots. On a single charge, the machine can produce five shots of espresso. Each brew takes about 5 minutes to heat the water from room temperature and 3 minutes to extract the shot. Recharging is simple, though, with the standard USB-C cable and power block – not included.

The OuttIn Nano is an all-in-one design that makes it easy to pack for travel. An advantage of the OutIn espresso machine is the option to use capsules from popular brands like Nespresso . However, you can still grind coffee beans for a shot.

The Staresso Portable Espresso Machine is a fine portable espresso maker if you don’t mind a little manual labor. The all-in-one design keeps everything together, including the coffee scoop, capsule cutter for Nespresso -style capsules, and filter basket for ground coffee. Stainless steel construction means this compact and lightweight machine can survive jostling while traveling.

After using something like the Jettle Electric Kettle for boiling water, the Staresso Portable Espresso Machine produces a single shot of espresso in about 5 minutes. Unlike other portable espresso machines, the Staresso machine securely holds the cup to the body while pumping for the perfect extraction.

The Best Portable Pour Over Coffee Makers

lidl travel coffee maker

Sea to Summit specializes in lightweight gear for backpackers. So, of course, their X-Brew Collapsible Coffee Dripper is also perfect for travelers – especially if you fly. The silicone cone is collapsible to less than an inch thick, so you can slide it into a sleeve of your carry-on bag. The stainless steel mesh filter is removable for easy cleaning. And the entire setup weighs only 3 ounces.

However, a downside to pour over coffee makers is the need for hot water. The Jettle Electric Kettle is easy to get hot water for your pour over while traveling. Once the hot water is ready, brewing a coffee into your favorite travel mug takes less than a minute.

US-based GSI Outdoors is one of the world’s largest family-owned outdoor gear makers. The company specializes in gear for backpacking and car camping. The GSI Outdoors Gourmet Pour Over Java Set is a happy product that meets the needs of backpackers, campers, and travelers all at once.

The silicone cone features a large, 5.6″ diameter plastic flange to help center the pour over your travel coffee mug. When finished, the cone collapses to 1″ high and weighs less than a pound. A plastic cover snaps onto the flange to keep everything together. It’s the perfect way to brew coffee if you fly with just a carry-on bag.

Of course, you’ll need hot water. The Jettle Electric Kettle can boil water in less than five minutes and easily packs into most bags.

Best Pour Over Coffee Maker

The Cafflano Klassic All-in-One Pour Over Cofee Maker is one of the most innovative coffee machines ever produced. The nifty device features a kettle, conical burr grinder, pour over filter, and a coffee mug that assembles into a 7.6″x3.5″ travel container. And weighing just one pound, it’s easy to pack for travel.

The adjustable conical burr grinder uses human power to produce fresh ground coffee directly into the pour over filter. The pre-measured kettle features a pour spout for fine control of the pour over. The pour over filter fits snugly onto the insulated tumbler. Pour water through the filter, remove the filter, and you’ll have coffee in less than a minute.

The only thing missing from the otherwise flawless portable coffee maker is a means to produce hot water. The Jettle Electric Kettle can make hot water in about five minutes, and the pre-measured Cafflano Klassic kettle will ensure you get the correct amount of water each time.

The Best Portable French Press Coffee Makers

lidl travel coffee maker

All it takes is a single pump when brewing coffee with the Aeropress Go . The French press portable coffee maker uses a hand pump to push water through ground coffee in a filter basket to make delicious coffee. The process takes only a few minutes – but you’ll have to make the hot water first.

The 15-ounce travel cup does double duty as storage for the various components of the travel coffee kit. The scoop, stirrer, additional paper filters , and pump fit inside the cup, and a silicone cap keeps everything secured.

The all-plastic design means the Aeropress Go is more fragile than its stainless steel counterparts. And the paper filter means you’ll need to carry spares and pack enough to last the duration of your trip. Finally, you’ll need something like the Jettle Electric Kettle to make hot water for your coffee.

The Bodum Travel Press is as simple as it gets with a portable coffee maker. The 15-ounce stainless steel tumbler stores everything inside until you can make coffee. The plunger is built into the leak-proof lid for easy use without assembly.

You’ll need something like the Jettle Electric Kettle to make the hot water, though. Once the hot water is poured into the tumbler, add your ground coffee, wait a few minutes, and press the plunger. Enjoy your coffee first, and clean up everything later.

Depending on how you brew coffee at home, the Presto MyJo Single Cup Coffee Maker could have one significant advantage over other French press coffee makers: it uses pods instead of ground coffee. The all-in-one design keeps everything together and makes packing easy for travel. When you’re ready to use, simply open the base, pop in a k-pod or other brand, and you’re ready to pump your delicious coffee.

Like other portable coffee makers, you’ll need something like the Jettle Electric Kettle to make hot water. Once boiling, pour into the Presto MyJo water reservoir and start pumping.

The Presto MyJo is slightly bigger than other portable coffee makers, measuring 9″ tall and about 4″ wide. However, it weighs less than a pound, so it’s still easy to carry around in your luggage.

Although BruTrek’s budget was too small to buy vowels, the BruTrek OVRLNDR is one of the best portable coffee makers for travel. The all-in-one design keeps everything together for easy packing and prevents lost parts. The stainless steel components are durable and will survive the rigors of travel. At 9.5″ tall, it will take some room in your luggage, and at 1.5 pounds, it’s still lightweight but heavier than the competition.

The innovative removable bottom is the coolest – or hottest, depending on how you like your coffee – part about the BruTrek OVRLNDR. The bottom of the insulated travel mug detaches to make cleaning the soggy coffee grounds effortless.

You’ll need something like the Jettle Electric Kettle to make hot water. Once ready, pour the water into the travel mug, add your ground coffee, and screw on the leak-proof lid with a built-in plunger. A single plunge and you’re drinking a delicious coffee.

Have you ever sipped French press coffee and found gritty coffee grounds? With a patented double-filter design, the ESPRO P1 promises to prevent that irritating problem. Pour hot water into the 14-ounce travel mug, add your ground coffee, and press the plunger down. The basket-shaped reusable mesh filter squeezes the coffee through and pushes the grounds to the bottom.

With the Jettle Electric Kettle , you’ll have hot water in five minutes. Then, it takes just a couple more minutes to brew your coffee in the ESPRO P1. The insulated travel mug keeps the coffee hot, and the leak-proof lid will keep it from spilling.

The ESPRO P1 is 8″ tall and 3″ wide and weighs less than a pound, making it easy to pack and travel.

The Best Portable Single Serve Coffee Makers

Best Single Serve Coffee Maker

Keurig popularized the use of coffee pods – small plastic cups filled with a single scoop of ground coffee for brewing one coffee at a time. Single-use coffee machines are common in kitchens across the country today.

And the Keurig K-Mini Plus is the perfect portable coffee machine.

The single-serve coffee maker uses any brand’s pods to brew up to 12 ounces. The removable water reservoir is easily filled with pre-measured amounts etched into the clear plastic sides. The Keurig K-Mini Plus heats water on demand for each single-serve coffee. Brewing a coffee takes about five minutes from start to finish.

The removable tray allows for up to a 16.8″ travel mug. The 26″ power cord stores in a compartment in the back of the coffee maker. And a removable compartment holds 9 pods. With the additional travel bag , it’s easy to pack the Keurig K-Mini Plus in your car.

The BLACK+DECKER Single Serve Coffeemaker is one of the lightest and most compact on the market. But that’s because it’s a barebones portable coffee maker with few features. Pour up to 16 ounces of water into the built-in reservoir, fill the removable filter basket with ground coffee, and press a button to brew.

It takes about five minutes for the single-brew coffee to heat and trickle through the filter basket into the included travel mug. The travel mug is a nice feature, but the lid is prone to leaking, and poor insulation does not keep the coffee warm for long. The portable coffee maker has clearance for a 7″ travel mug.

At 12″ tall and weighing just 3 pounds, the BLACK+DECKER Single Serve Coffeemaker is compact and lightweight, perfect for packing in your car.

The CHULUX Single Cup Coffee Maker is great for travelers who want fresh drip coffee in the mornings. The portable coffee maker is just 9″ tall and weighs about 2 pounds, so it’s easy to pack.

The built-in water reservoir holds up to 12 ounces. The filter basket is only compatible with coffee pods. But once those are loaded, the coffee maker features a lockable lid to prevent accidentally spilling contents if knocked over in the hotel room.

Powerful heating elements means it only takes 3 minutes to brew a 12-ounce coffee. The removable drip tray allows for up to a 5.3″ coffee mug. At 10″ tall and 2.2 pounds, it’s great for travel to rental units where you’ll have coffee mugs to use instead of travel mugs.

Short travel mug size

lidl travel coffee maker

Even if you’re not heading out to the job site, the Makita 18V Cordless Coffee Maker is an interesting portable machine. The coffee maker uses 18V or 12V lithium-ion batteries to produce up to three 5-ounce coffees on a single 4Ah battery. The cordless design makes it convenient for brewing in the car or without hassling to find an outlet.

The removable water reservoir makes it easy to fill. Insert a coffee packet into the basket or use ground coffee with the permanent built-in filter. Brewing a single coffee takes about 5 minutes after pressing the power button. But with only 3.5″ of clearance, you can only use small coffee mugs – no travel mugs for this coffee machine.

This is a great portable coffee maker if you don’t have room in your luggage to fit another compact coffee maker. The rugged exterior features a carry handle to grab and go. But you’ll also need to grab an extra battery and charger.

Uses packets or ground coffee

Requires 18V battery (not included)

Few brews per battery

Minimal mug clearance

The Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Single Serve Coffee Maker is a perfect compact solution for brewing pods or ground coffee while traveling. The coffee maker features an interchangeable, reusable filter basket and piercing pod insert, so you can brew coffee however you prefer. With pods, the coffee maker produces 10-ounce coffees, and with ground coffee, you can get a 14-ounce coffee.

The coffee maker requires a lot of power, though – 1,000 watts. That’s not an issue if plugging into a household outlet in a hotel or house rental. But if you want to use this coffee maker in the car, you’ll need a bigger power inverter for a portable coffee maker. Two brewing strengths are a bonus with the Hamilton Beach FlexBrew. Choose between Regular and Bold to begin the brew.

The coffee maker can fit most travel mugs with an 8″ height. The removable cup rest makes it easy to use smaller coffee mugs and the rest doubles as extra storage.

The coffee maker is compact at 13″ tall and weighs just 3 pounds. However, portability is hindered by a fixed 2-foot power cord that cannot be retracted for storage.

Portable coffee makers make it easy to travel with a coffee maker. Compact and lightweight pour over and espresso coffee makers can easily pack into your luggage. Single serve coffee makers are too large for luggage, but some are still small enough to easily pack in your car.

Portable coffee makers work on the same principle as countertop coffee makers at home. Portable coffee makers can use ground coffee, Nespresso pods, or coffee pods. Hot water is poured through the coffee into a travel mug. The only difference with portable coffee makers – and their biggest downside – is how you get the hot water.

Yes, you can bring a coffee maker on a plane. The Transportation Safety Administration allows electronic items like coffee and espresso makers to be packed in carry-on or checked luggage.

Yes, the Transportation Safety Administration allows U.S. fliers to pack portable coffee and espresso makers in their luggage.

Yes, the Keurig K-Mini and Keurig K-Mini Plus are excellent travel coffee makers. Although Keurig does not market them specifically for travel, the compact and lightweight coffee makers are perfect for travel.

10 Best Travel Coffee Makers in 2024 – Reviews & Top Picks

A travel coffee maker mounted to a hiking backpack

There are countless travel and portable coffee makers on the market, but we’ve handpicked the best ones to make your life easier. You may prefer a particular coffee-brewing method, and just because you are traveling doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice coffee made the way you like it. No matter what you’re looking for in a travel coffee maker, from espresso machines to French presses, we’ve got you covered. Read on for our list of the 10 best.

  • A Quick Summary of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 Best Travel Coffee Makers

  • 1. AeroPress Portable Coffee Maker – Best Overall

The AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker is everything you want in a travel coffee maker. It’s extremely lightweight (only 13 ounces) and compact, so it won’t take up much space in your bag. It makes coffee fast, with less than two minutes to brew a cup, which is perfect for when you’re on the go. It’s easy to use and easy to clean. Best of all, it’s completely manual. It doesn’t require electricity, so you only need access to hot water. This makes it ideal for any travel situation: hotels, beach houses, your friend’s house, or even camping and backpacking .

The only issue is that it can only make one cup of coffee at a time. If you want more than one cup, or if you want to impress your friends with your coffee-brewing skills, you have to go through the process all over again.

All in all, we think this is the best travel coffee maker of the year.

By the way… you can read our full review of the AeroPress coffee maker here !

  • Very lightweight
  • Makes coffee fast
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Easy cleanup
  • No electricity needed
  • Only makes a single cup of coffee at a time
  • 2. Bodum TravelPress – Best French Press Coffee Maker for Travel

We chose the Bodum Travel Press as the best french press coffee maker for travel, as it’s incredibly convenient. The travel cup comes with a plunger and filter, so you brew your coffee right in your travel cup. This means you don’t have to pack a separate coffee maker or paper filters, saving valuable space in your luggage. It’s made of a stainless steel double-wall design that keeps coffee piping hot, so be careful! It’s quick and easy to use, which is great for travel. It even comes in a few bold color choices.

On the negative side, this isn’t the best cup for daily use. That’s fine if you plan to use it just for travel, but the durability is questionable. The filter breaks down over time, and the lid tends to be flimsy.

To conclude, we think this is the best portable French press coffee maker. Take it on your next trip and see what you think!

  • Brews in a travel cup
  • Insulated stainless steel cup keeps coffee hot
  • Available in various colors
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Not as durable; breaks down over time
  • 3. Black+Decker Portable Single Serve Coffee Maker – Best Value

The Black + Decker Single Serve is another great portable coffee maker that brews right in the travel cup. It’s an auto-drip maker, but its compact design makes it ideal for travel and small spaces ( like a dorm room ). A permanent filter is included, so you don’t have to worry about disposing of or buying paper filters. It’s also very inexpensive.

It does have a couple of problems, however. It comes with a plastic travel cup, which won’t keep your coffee hot for long. You can upgrade to any 16-ounce travel mug, but that’s an added expense. It’s also not very durable and shouldn’t be used for daily use.

  • Compact design
  • Permanent filter
  • Plastic travel cup
  • Not very durable

NOTE:  You can see a breakdown of the best travel-friendly ESPRESSO makers here

  • 4. Keurig K-Mini – Best Travel K-Cup Coffee Maker

Keurig is the manufacturer of popular K-Cup makers , so it makes sense to include their most travel-friendly model on this list. The Keurig K-Mini is extremely compact and lightweight; it’s only 4.5 inches wide, and it weighs a little less than five pounds. It comes in a variety of colors, and it has a compartment for K-Cup storage. For more potent cups of coffee, it has a strong brew option.

If you’re the type of person who likes more than one cup of coffee in the morning, then this design might get a little tedious, since the water reservoir can only hold up to 12 ounces. Other than the strong brew option and a couple of size options, this brewer doesn’t have any extra features.

Read our full review of the Keurig Mini here!

  • Extremely compact and lightweight
  • Available in several colors
  • Strong brew option
  • Only enough water for one cup of coffee
  • No extra features
  • 5. GSI Portable Portable Pour-Over Coffee Brewer

The GSI Outdoors Java Drip is a great option for backpacking, camping, or boating. It collapses almost completely flat and is made of durable silicone. Fewer parts mean easy cleanup, and it’s easy to use. Just insert a paper filter, place the silicone disc over your mug or travel cup, and use the pour-over coffee-making method with hot water. It’s big enough to use a regular-size coffee filter, so it can handle up to twelve cups of coffee.

Even though the silicone makes it durable and easy to clean, it has a detectable smell, especially right out of the box. This can affect the taste of your coffee. You’ll also need paper filters, which are another thing to purchase, take up space in your bag, and dispose of.

  • Collapsible, lightweight design
  • Easy to clean and use
  • Brews 1-12 cups of coffee
  • Silicone can affect the taste of coffee
  • Paper filters needed
  • 6. Wacaco Minipresso Portable Travel Espresso Maker

If you can’t live without espresso while you’re traveling, especially in situations where you won’t have access to electricity, the Wacaco Minipresso is a great choice. All of its parts stack together into one unit, so it’s very compact. It comes in at 0.8 lbs, which is very light. It’s entirely manually operated via a pumping mechanism, so you don’t have to worry about batteries or finding an outlet.

However, with eight BARs of pressure, it’s just under the nine BARs needed for espresso. This means that the grounds are a bit under-extracted. Quite a bit of hand strength is needed for the pump, and even though the company’s video shows it being operated with only one hand, many people will need to use both. All those parts also mean it’s harder to clean, and some will require air-drying.

Read our full review of the Wacaco Minipresso here! (We loved it).

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Manually operated
  • Harder to clean
  • Espresso is under-extracted
  • Hand strength required
  • 7. Coffee Gator Travel Pour-Over Coffee Brewer Mug

The Coffee Gator Pour Over Brewer Mug is another option for pour-over brewing, where you can brew directly into the included travel mug. It’s made of vacuum-insulated stainless steel, and it has a copper lining to keep your coffee hotter longer. The metal filter means you don’t have to buy paper filters or have them take up space in your luggage. It comes in a range of colors, and it’s easy to use.

There are a few things that keep it from the top of the list, however. It has a flimsy lid, so the durability is questionable. The lid also has a few small parts, making it difficult to clean. This wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use, as the filter appeared to break down over time.

  • Brews right in the travel mug
  • Made of quality materials to keep coffee hot
  • Metal filter
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Difficult to clean
  • Questionable durability
  • Filter breaks down over time
  • 8. Bialetti Portable Stovetop Coffee Maker

This is the compact, travel-friendly version of the Bialetti Moka pot you love. It’s extremely portable because it’s entirely self-contained. Just add ground coffee and water. The brew time is fast at under five minutes, and it’s easy to clean.

One major issue, however, is that you’ll need access to a stovetop or campfire. That’s not a problem if you’re staying in a hotel suite with a kitchen or traveling in an RV , but it wouldn’t be the best travel coffee maker choice for a regular hotel room, for example. It’s also a bit heavier than some of the other options, at a little more than a pound. It only makes one small cup, so it’s a bit of a pain if you want multiple cups of coffee.

  • Entirely self-contained
  • Easy to clean
  • Fast brew time
  • Requires access to a stovetop or fire
  • On the heavier side
  • Only makes one small cup
  • 9. Presto MyJo Single Cup Travel Coffee-Maker

The Presto MyJo is another good choice for camping, backpacking, or other traveling activity where you don’t have access to electricity. If you love the convenience of a K-Cup brewer, this is the travel coffee maker for you. It uses K-Cups, but it also comes with a reusable coffee filter that you can fill with your own ground coffee. The design is extremely compact, and it weighs less than a pound.

Unfortunately, the reusable filter is also pretty delicate, and it’s custom-made by Presto, so you have to order it from the company. The MyJo isn’t very durable, and the gasket leaks easily if you don’t have it properly sealed. It may also be convenient that no electricity is needed, but it requires a lot of force to pump the water through.

  • Extremely compact design
  • K-Cup compatible
  • Reusable coffee filter included
  • Reusable coffee filter is delicate
  • Tends to leak
  • Takes a lot of force to pump water
  • 10. Takeya Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker

Can’t live without your iced coffee , even when traveling? Then the Takeya Cold Brew is the coffee maker for you. It’s easy to use; you only need coffee grounds and cold water. This design is especially compact and lightweight, at just under 10 ounces.

However, the handle is flimsy, and the lid tends to leak if you aren’t careful. The filter also never forms a perfect seal, so grounds always manage to escape into the coffee. Because of this, the overall design doesn’t seem very durable. It’s fine for occasional travel use, but it wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use.

  • Lightweight
  • Filter allows coffee grounds to escape
  • Tends to be flimsy
  • Prone to leaks
  • Final Thoughts – Finding the Best Travel Coffee Maker

We think Aeropress is the best travel coffee maker of the year. It’s lightweight and compact enough for air travel, and the fact that it doesn’t require electricity makes it ideal for camping. It makes both American-style coffee and espresso, so it can suit the tastes of almost everyone.

If you can’t leave home without your French press, then the Bodum Travel Press is the best for travel. The fact that it brews directly in the travel mug makes it great for travel, and it won’t take up much space in your luggage.

If you’re on a budget, Black + Decker’s Single-Serve Coffeemaker is inexpensive and also brews right in the travel mug. This is an auto-drip model that’s easy to use and familiar to just about everyone.

For those who love the convenience and efficiency of a K-Cup coffee maker, the Keurig K-Mini is perfect to take along. Its compact design ensures it won’t take up much space, while still giving you the speed and efficiency you’ve come to expect from a single-serve coffee maker.

Whether you prefer a cup of espresso or love the convenience of a K-Cup, we hope our reviews helped you find the travel coffee maker to suit your needs. We truly hope that our guide helps you find the best portable coffee maker for your tastebuds. Happy brewing!

Best Portable Coffee Makers for Travel

Last updated: April 7, 2024 . Written by Laurence Norah - 14 Comments

We, like many people, love coffee. It’s a staple of our morning routine, whether we’re on a road trip, on a camping adventure, or just hanging out at home.

Of course, there’s a world of variety when it comes to coffee, and not every coffee drink is created equally. When we’re at home it’s easy for us to make a great cup of coffee, but when we’re travelling, it’s not always so simple. And as full-time travel bloggers and photographers, we find ourselves on the road a lot. So finding the best travel coffee maker was something we were keen to do!

Whether you are trying to escape the instant coffee in hotel rooms or the bad diner coffee, trying to fuel your espresso addition in the wilderness, or trying to save money on buying expensive coffee at places like Starbucks, we think that making your own coffee with a portable coffee maker may be the way to go.

You can make your own coffee to your own liking for much less than you’d spend if you bought it from a coffee shop. Making your own coffee can also be a more environmentally friendly option as well.

With this in mind, we wanted to share a list of the best travel coffee makers on the market. With one of these devices, you’ll be able to make great coffee wherever you are in the world – be that on a hiking trip, in an RV, or at a hotel.

As well as our list of the best coffee makers for travel, we’re also going to share everything you need to know when looking to buy a coffee maker. So even if you don’t go for one of our options, you’ll know exactly what to look for when purchasing a travel coffee machine.

Things to Consider When Buying a Portable Coffee Maker for Travel

Before you buy a coffee maker for travel, there are a few things you will want to consider. There’s a huge range of different types of coffee makers on the market, and the style of coffee they make also varies.

So it’s important before you buy that you know what to look out for. Here are some of the key things to consider when shopping for a travel coffee maker.

Brewing Method & Type of Coffee

As you are likely already aware, there are a variety of ways that you can brew coffee. These include French Press style coffee, drip coffee (also known as filter coffee), Turkish style coffee, pour over coffee, and espresso coffee. The latter can be used to make a range of other coffee drinks like Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes, with the addition of ingredients like hot water or steamed milk.

You probably already have a style of coffee you enjoy, which will come with an associated brewing method. It’s important to pick a travel coffee maker that can make your preferred style of coffee, especially as no one travel coffee maker has the ability to make every type of coffee.

Espresso in particular is more challenging to make on the go, as it requires hot water to be pushed through very fine coffee beans at between 7 and 10 bars of pressure. These types of systems tend to be heavier and more expensive.

The options listed below offer different methods of brewing coffee, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs.

AeroPress Travel Coffee Maker

Dimensions & Weight

This is one of the most important factors when deciding which travel coffee maker is the right choice for you. The first thing you need to consider is the overall size of your luggage, and how much space you are willing to allot to your coffee maker.

Some of the options below have the ability to fold up, while others are lightweight and easily squeezed into the corner of your suitcase or popped in your hand luggage.

On the other hand, some of the coffee makers we mention in this list are much heavier and may only be suitable if you are traveling via car or RV. But they are probably too bulky for air travel.

Deciding on the ideal dimensions and weight all depends on your method of transportation, the size of your luggage, and the weight allowance of the airline you may be travelling with.

Volume of Coffee It Makes

Most travel coffee makers are designed for making quite a small amount of coffee, usually enough for only one or two people. It’s definitely worth checking before you buy to make sure the device you buy will make you enough coffee.

For example, if you are used to drinking a 12 oz mug of coffee every morning, you probably don’t want a system that will only make you 6 oz at a time.

Travel Coffee

Power Source

Some of the travel coffee makers on the market work by hand, while others require batteries, electric outlets, or solar power. If you are buying something for backwoods camping or boating, the options that work by electricity are not going to be ideal for you.

However, if you are staying in accommodation with access to plugs, you may wish to go for something electric or that can be charged for later use. If it needs to be plugged in, you want to be sure that it works in all the countries you plan to visit – the US for example has a 110v supply, whilst the UK has a 240v supply.

Also consider that most coffee makers require hot water to make coffee. If the coffee maker you buy doesn’t have a way to heat the coffee via a power source, you’re going to need something that will. If you’re camping, you’ll likely have a portable stove or access to a fire to heat water, so this might not be an issue.

Time to Brew Coffee

Sometimes you want a cup of coffee, fast! No fuss, no waiting around, just smooth, flavorful coffee on the go. How much fuss are you willing to go through for your morning cup, and how much time does it take to brew a cup or pot of coffee? This is something to bear in mind when searching for your next travel coffee maker.

All of the machines we mention in this list take varying amounts of time to make a cup, and also differing measures of coffee they can make at once. If you are traveling as a group of 4 or more for example, you may want a different solution than a solo traveler. Always consider the time per cup when calculating how long it takes to brew.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

Ease of Cleaning

The last thing you want to worry about while you travel is how you’re going to clean the nooks and crannies of your coffee maker, so we definitely recommend looking into how easy the product is to clean before purchasing.

Some can be cleaned with a simple rinse, while others may have more finicky components that need to be cleaned after use. You will also find that certain coffee makers are dishwasher friendly, which is always an added bonus for when you have access to a dishwasher.

Environmental Impact

We are delighted to see more and more travelers opting for more environmentally friendly and reusable products lately.

In relation to coffee and coffee makers, it’s important to consider that coffee grinds are compostable, while single-use filters or pods might not be. Keep an eye out for recyclable or compostable options, it will do a world of good for the environment!

Travel Coffee Maker

Additional Features like a Coffee Bean Grinder or Milk Frother

If you are a bit of a coffee connoisseur, you may require additional features to create your perfect cup of coffee, like a whole coffee bean grinder or milk frother . Some coffee makers have these built in, whilst others will require you to purchase additional accessories and add to the weight and cost of your final coffee making setup.

Versatility

Versatility is a big bonus when it comes to travel coffee machines, as you end up getting much more bang for your buck. While most machines only work with one type of coffee, others allow you to use a variety, from whole bean and fine ground, to K cups and instant coffee.

The same can be said for the types of coffee they can produce, for example, espresso, Americano, drip-style, and so on.

Another benefit is if the coffee maker can double up as a coffee mug so that you don’t need to carry both, or if it can also be used for tea, hot chocolate, smoothies, hot soup, or noodles. Some coffee makers even have the ability to keep your drinks cold as well as hot, or to make cold brew coffee as well as hot coffee.

This provides far more value to you in the long run than a regular coffee machine.

Lastly, take into consideration whether or not the product will also be useful in other situations other than just travel. Can you see yourself using it at home, work, hiking, or on a picnic at a local park? The more versatile the coffee maker, the more opportunities you will have to use it.

Coffee Gator

We’re big fans of the Coffee Gator motto “Bring the coffee house home”. They created the Coffee Gator Thermal Travel Cup with the aim of being able to make and drink incredible, barista-quality coffee at home or on the go.

lidl travel coffee maker

The focus with this travel coffee maker is on high quality components. In their words, “Inferior metal makes drinks taste like licking a battery” and we couldn’t agree more. Which is why this is made from military grade stainless steel.

The dual layers of premium stainless steel create a vacuum that reduces heat transfer, so you are guaranteed the perfect temperature coffee for longer. In fact, it keeps coffee hot for 6 hours, or cold for 20 hours.

It comes with a stainless-steel filter for making pour over coffee, and it doubles up as a stylish insulated travel coffee mug too.

Coffee Gator

When used with the pour over system it can make 12oz / 340ml of coffee, whilst the cup on its own can hold 20oz / 568ml. Enough to wake anyone up we think!

The lid slips on and off in a flash, rinses in seconds, and is dishwasher safe. The icing on top of the cake is their total satisfaction promise, which covers everything they sell (they had nearly 10,000 positive reviews last year).

We travel with this coffee system and we also use this at home for a quick cup. It makes a great travel coffee mug in general, and it makes good coffee quickly and easily. We’d say it’s between this and the AeroPress Go for us in terms of our favorite travel coffee options.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

If portability is a critical factor in your decision making, then you should definitely consider the JoGo CoffeeStraw.

This innovative little device is basically a cross between a metal straw and a French Press. At one end of the stainless steel straw you’ll find a BPA free heat regulated silicone tip for drinking through. At the other end is a fine micron-mesh filter made from stainless steel.

lidl travel coffee maker

Using the straw couldn’t be simpler. Just add ground coffee to any cup, pour in hot water, then wait a couple of minutes for it to steep (and the water to cool down!). Once brewed, you just drink through the straw. As you drink the coffee passes through the filter, giving you a coffee that is similar in style to a French Press.

Obviously, there is no pressure involved in the extraction, so the coffee produced isn’t espresso style. However, we find it to produce very tasty and smooth coffee, and it is incredibly easy to use. It’s also very small and lightweight.

JoGo CoffeeStraw

In terms of cleaning, the filter unscrews for easy rinsing. The straw also comes with a bottle cleaner style brush so you can clean the inside, and it is also dishwasher safe.

The other good thing about this straw is that its use is not just restricted to coffee. You can also use it for loose leaf tea, fresh juice with seeds, or any other drink where you want to use a more environmentally friendly straw. It can also be used to drink cold brew coffee.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. You need to supply your own hot water and mug, and there’s no way to control the brew strength other than by adjusting the initial amount of coffee. As the coffee grounds (or tea leaves) stay in the mug, it will continue to brew as you drink.

We haven’t found this to be a problem, but if you are someone who likes to savour a cup over a prolonged time this is something to consider. The best option is to try and drink it consistently rather than slowly as otherwise the drink may become bitter or over brewed.

From an environmental perspective it saves on plastic straws as well as paper filters and single use coffee pods. It’s a unique product, and definitely one to consider for ultra-portable coffee making on the go!

GROSCHE Milano Moka Pot

When I travelled across Australia for a year, primarily camping out of my four-wheel drive vehicle in remote locations, my coffee maker of choice was a Moka Pot.

lidl travel coffee maker

This is one of the most popular ways to make coffee at home in Italy. Basically, it’s a metal pot with two parts. – the hot water goes in the bottom container below the ground coffee, and you place it directly on a heat source like a stove top or gas burner. The water boils and is pushed through the coffee grounds and up into the upper pot.

Moka pots make espresso style coffee quickly and easily. The model we’ve chosen is available in 1, 3, 6 and 9 cup sizes, so you can brew from 1.5oz up to 15.2oz of coffee depending on your preferences.  You can either drink this as espresso, or use it as the base for longer drinks like an Americano or latte.

At 1.35lbs / 612g this isn’t the lightest coffee maker in our list, but it is definitely a durable and easy to use option. Just be aware it’s not dishwasher safe.

Capacity: 10oz / 295ml Weight: 1.8lb / 612g Type: espresso Requires power? No, just a heat source Requires hot water? No Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set

Stanley are well known for their all-steel vacuum flask which they have been making since 1913. However, they also make a number of other camp and travel focused products, including some portable coffee makers.

lidl travel coffee maker

We’re recommending the Stanley Camp Pour Over Coffee Set, which comes, as the name suggests, as a set with a cup and a stainless steel pour over filter.

You can also buy just the pour over part of the set if you already have a mug or cup you want to use.

The pour over filter and mug are both made from 18/8 stainless steel and is BPA free. It’s also dishwasher safe. The mug itself has a drink-through lid as well as double-wall vacuum insulation which can keep your drink hot for up to 1.5hours.

The mug has a capacity of 12oz and the pour over filter has a capacity of 20oz. The pour over has a built-in easy clean stainless-steel filter, so you don’t need any disposable filters.

It’s a very solid and sturdy device which is built to withstand the rigors of a camping trip. It also has an excellent guarantee. Just be aware that it is a little heavy due to the solid build.

Stanley also make a range of other products , including a portable French Press . Definitely worth checking out if you want a sturdy, well-made solution for your travel coffee needs.

Capacity: 12oz / 340ml (mug) Weight: 9.6oz / 272g (filter), 11.2oz / 317g (mug) Type: Pour over Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

AeroPress Espresso & Coffee Maker

If you are looking for something quick and simple that brews smooth ground-free coffee every time, this AeroPress might be a fantastic option for you. AeroPress basically created a new type of portable coffee extraction method, known as the AeroPress brewing system.

lidl travel coffee maker

The AeroPress brewing system results in uniform extraction for a full coffee flavor. It includes a micro filter for grit free coffee and guarantees a 20 second ‘press time’ – just add your coffee and water. The end result is up to an 8oz coffee drink which is similar to but not quite as strong as espresso, to which you can add water to create a 10 oz sized Americano if you wish.

The AeroPress kit comes with 350 disposable filters, a scoop, funnel and stirrer. However, we recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You might also consider the flow control filter cap for more brewing control.

An added bonus is that there are no fiddly parts that are hard to get to when washing, so the cleanup is relatively simple. That said, in our experience no coffee system is ever that easy to clean as coffee grinds have a habit of getting everywhere!

The AeroPress also comes with a tote bag to keep your coffee maker tucked away neat and tidy on your travels.

Overall, this is a relatively lightweight and portable system that makes great coffee, and which is perfect for throwing in your backpack for your next camping trip or holiday. It’s designed to be simple to use, and you don’t have to worry about grind size or getting coffee grit in your finished drink, plus you can make both espresso style coffee and Americano style coffee by just adding hot water.

We have a complete AeroPress review if you’d like to learn more, which also compares the original against the AeroPress Go, so you can decide which might suit your needs better.

In addition, if you’re looking for a coffee maker made in the USA, then this is a great option, as AeroPress manufacturers all their coffee systems in the United States. As an aside, if you’re looking for more US made products, check out our guide to the best gifts made in the USA .

Capacity: 10oz / 296ml Weight: 8oz / 226g Type: AeroPress Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon  here

AeroPress Go

AeroPress also make the AeroPress Go . This has the same brewing system as the original, but it includes a 15oz (444ml) cup which fits all the accessories when not in use, and is slightly more compact. We have one of these and love it for the coffee it produces as well as for how portable it is.

lidl travel coffee maker

It also comes with 350 disposable filters, but we’d recommend picking up a metal filter instead of the disposable filters so you don’t have to bring loads of filters with you when you travel, and also to avoid waste. You also get a coffee scoop.

It is obviously slightly heavier overall than the original AeroPress because of the mug, and it can only brew 8oz instead of 10oz as it’s slightly smaller. Otherwise you’re going to get the same great coffee.

The AeroPress Go is one of our most recommended systems for travelers, especially for campers and hikers where weight and simple cleaning is important – we’ve enjoyed it when exploring the outdoors of Scotland. See our complete AeroPress review for more on our experiences using this when traveling.

Capacity: 8oz / 220ml Weight: 11.2oz / 317g Type: AeroPress Requires power? No Requires hot water? Yes Price: Check latest price on Amazon here

Soulhand 5 in 1 Electric Coffee Maker & Grinder

Chulux travel coffee maker

Although this travel coffee maker is one of the heaviest on our list, weighing 2.2lbs / 1kg, we wanted to include it for those of you wanting coffee when traveling via car or RV. Despite the weight, it’s still fairly compact.

It’s a single cup design which fits most coffee capsules, or you can use your own ground coffee, so you have plenty of options to make drip coffee. It’s quite similar to the drip coffee makers you find in many hotel rooms across the world.

lidl travel coffee maker

The Chulux travel coffee maker includes a 12oz / 340ml water tank and a removable drip tray, which ensures that your daily coffee demand is met, mess free. It’s also quite quick, producing a 12oz cup of coffee in around 3 minutes, and it has an automatic shut off function after brewing for safety.

However you may find that you need to use a small sharp item such as a paper clip to really clear out the outlets every now and again for longer lasting maintenance. It is also easy to clean and store. It supports standard sized or larger cups (up to 5.3“ tall), and you can adjust the drip tray to fit your cup.

To top it off, the product comes with quality assurance and a one year warranty. It is also made from BPA-free material and it is UL & FDA certified, for safety guaranteed.

lidl travel coffee maker

The travel mug itself without the press can hold 15oz / 420ml of coffee, however when you use it to brew coffee the grounds take up some of the space so expect around a 12oz / 340ml serving. It is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. It weighs 14.4 oz / 410grams, but if you are looking for something a little smaller and lighter, you can always opt for the smaller version which weighs just 8.8oz / 250 grams.

Here’s how it works; The seesaw motion of the small lever operates two tiny piston water pumps, building up pressure over a few strokes. That means you have got the ideal 8 to 10 bars of brewing pressure at your fingertips. You can pull a perfect shot each and every time with the help of the True Crema Valve.

You can adjust the pumping speed to produce optimal brewing pressure, giving you total control. It functions like a true lever machine while simplifying the operation and increasing the success rate of what’s involved in pulling a shot of great espresso.

This travel coffee maker is outdoor and environmentally friendly and it produces minimum waste. You will need to carry your own mug though, so bear in mind that this travel coffee maker might be more suitable for road trips and for making coffee in an RV rather than for air travel and extended back country trips, as the weight is quite high.

Which Travel Coffee Maker Would You Recommend?

The answer to this will vary depending on your preference for coffee style. For us, we think that the AeroPress Go or Coffee Gator pour over travel cup are our favourite options. They’re both relatively inexpensive, easy to use, portable, and easy to clean. They also make great coffee!

If price and portability are your main criteria, then check out the Primula Single Serve Coffee Brew Buddy or JoGo CoffeeStraw . The latter in particular is super easy to use and only weighs an ounce!

If you absolutely must have espresso coffee on the go, then the Wacaco espresso maker is an excellent choice.

You can see the majority of the portable coffee makers and accessories in one place on Amazon here for easy comparison.

Coffee Accessories for Travel

Now you have your coffee maker all figured out, you might need some accessories to go with it. Your needs will vary depending on the coffee maker you purchase, but here are some options to consider.

Travel Coffee Mug: Contigo Stainless Steel Travel Mug

The Contigo is the ideal travel flask to keep your coffee hot while you enjoy your travels. The body is made from stainless steel for maximum durability, while the silicone band adds extra comfort while holding.

lidl travel coffee maker

It can hold up to 16oz / 450 ml, which I think is more than enough to keep you going on your next adventure. It also includes a clever lid technology to ensure that the product is leak-proof for on-the-go activities and it can keep your drinks hot up to 5 hours or cold up to 12 with vacuum insulation.

If you are planning on taking a road trip, the Contigo travel mug fits most car cup holders. In terms of washing, the lid is dishwasher-safe, however the body is hand-wash-only.

Travel Coffee Grinder: JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder

Finding the perfect coffee grinder is no easy task. If you want the perfect cup of coffee, you need high quality materials, durability, and functionality in one.

lidl travel coffee maker

Thankfully the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder is built to last, featuring a stainless steel body, a durable ceramic burr, and an adjustable grind selector for optimal results. This portable coffee grinder can be used anywhere, be it hiking, camping, backpacking or out on the open road.

It features a built-in adjustable grind selector so you can fine-tune it to get the coarseness you want.

Travel Milk Frother: Café Casa Milk Frother

This lightweight, hand-held, battery-operated device is designed specifically to produce perfect frothy milk in 15 seconds or less. It can be used to froth all types of milk, including cow, soya, rice, almond, coconut, UHT, and powdered milk, so you are guaranteed smooth, frothy coffee no matter what your taste.

lidl travel coffee maker

The head and shaft are both made from robust stainless steel. It is also easy to clean and maintain.

Travel Sized Kettle: Travel Foldable Electric Kettle

Travel coffee mugs aren’t the only foldable products on the market these days, now you can get collapsible kettles! This travel kettle provides readily accessible hot water on any continent, with support for both the US 110v standard and the European 240v standard.

lidl travel coffee maker

It is perfectly safe to use, with boil dry protection, and a sturdy lid lock to ensure scorch-free usage, while the concealed heating element eliminates those rusty metal coils.

Travel Water Heater

If you would like a way to heat water but don’t want to carry a whole kettle, consider an immersion heater. These basically take the heating element from a kettle, which you them immerse into the water you are heating up.

lidl travel coffee maker

The one we recommend is designed for travel, and supports both 120v and 240v supplies, making it ideal for world travel. It’s small and compact, and all you need is a power outlet and something like a mug for heating.

When using a device like this it is obviously important to carefully read and follow the directions for safety.

There’s no use having all of this equipment if you don’t have any actual coffee! There’s a huge range of coffee available today from all around the world, which comes in different formats depending on your requirements.

We recommend checking what type of coffee your coffee maker manufacturer recommends. Usually there will be a specific grind size for your coffee maker, or if it takes pods, a specific type of pod it is compatible with. Here are some quick links to different types of coffee to get you started:

  • Ground Coffee
  • Coffee Pods
  • Whole Coffee Beans

Finally, don’t discount instant coffee for those situations where you just don’t have any alternatives. We’ve had good results with the Starbucks Via range when road tripping and hiking – they are really lightweight, the coffee is good, and they even dissolve in cold water if you don’t have a stove or other heat source. Some of the Via range is specifically designed to make cold brew coffee.

Thank you very much for this compilation. I use the following alternatives for field trips: 1) Staresso portable coffee maker to prepare espresso; 2) PRESSE by Bobble French Coffee Press by Gamila Company; 3) Rivers brand reversible silicone coffee dripper cave. Greetings from the North of Chile.

When we travel, I use a small, cheap Black& Decker 5 cup drip coffee machine. I have found it even easier than a French press + cleaner is better.

Have you tried (and have comments on) the ESPRO Ultralight Travel Coffee Press?

5th April 2021 at 11:42 am

Hi Kathleen – I haven’t tried it and so don’t have personal experience. It has largely positive reviews and running the brand through Fakespot the reviews also appear genuine. So if you are after a French press style mug coffee maker it certainly looks like a good option. If you do purchase it I’d be happy to hear your opinion!

Hi there, great review of travel coffee makers. Do you know if the moka pot you recommend would work on a camp stove induction burner? Thanx!

29th April 2020 at 10:12 pm

Hi Juliette,

Thanks very much! According to the manufacturer it should work on an induction stove. There are some reviews suggesting it doesn’t, but the manufacturer says that that was an older model, and the new version which is on sale now is induction compatible. I have a number of CoffeeGator products, and they have always been very quick to respond to any questions when I’ve messaged them, so I would say that if for some reason it doesn’t work for you, I am sure they would help out 🙂

Let me know how it goes if you decide to go for it 🙂

I have a weird superstition. It feels like the quality of my morning coffee is a portent for the kind of day I'm going to have. It's not only the dose of caffeine that does the trick, although that does help. It's also the ritual that surrounds it—the smell, the sound, and even the wait are all a part of how coffee sets me up for the day ahead.

It's easy to feel lost without that morning ritual, especially when you're already uprooted and far from home. Whether you're out camping, on a business trip, or visiting friends and family, getting that little taste of home can help you feel grounded and ready to face the day. We've rounded up the best portable coffee makers to brew while traveling. Some of these options are also great for people who aren't working from home , since office kitchens are likely closed.

Check out our other buying guides , including the Best Latte and Cappuccino Machines , Best Cold-Brew Coffee Makers , Best Portable Espresso Makers , and Best Espresso Machines .

Best Overall

The AeroPress is one of the most popular coffee brewers on the market for a reason: It makes a damn fine cup of coffee. The AeroPress Go produces the same great results but in a smaller, travel-friendly package. The Go is barely bigger than a coffee mug, incredibly lightweight, and entirely self-contained. All you need to add is coffee.

A part of the reason for the AeroPress' success is that the brewing method is infinitely customizable to your tastes. Take the three ingredients—coffee, water, and pressure—and start experimenting until you find what suits your taste. There is no wrong way to brew with an Aeropress. I do suggest starting with the method the company endorses, which you'll find included in the box, but once you've mastered it there are plenty of other ways to do it. (Try all the winning recipes from AeroPress' annual competitions .)

The AeroPress is also very forgiving; it's almost difficult to make a bad cup of coffee. You don't have to use some involved process. On those chilly October mornings of a late-season camping trip, you can just throw in some grounds, give it a stir, plunge, and you've got a great, hot cup of joe to warm your bones. I like the AeroPress Go for its compact, all-in-one design, but the original AeroPress ($40) is still quite portable and is another option to consider.

Best All-in-One

The Cafflano Klassic is everything you need to brew in a single, compact, relatively lightweight package. It combines a hand-mill grinder, drip kettle, and metal pour-over filter, as well as an insulated mug, in a single tumbler-shaped package. You can grind your beans, brew, and drink your coffee without needing anything but a way to boil water.

The resulting brew is some of the best pour-over coffee I've made. Getting the right grind is key, but the adjustable grinder allows you to experiment until you find something you enjoy. If even the compact design of the Klassic is too much, you can also do what I've been doing when I travel: Just bring the pour-over filter. It's made of stiff plastic and metal and has so far held up well in my carry-on bag.

Best Super Simple Coffee

Dripkit's disposable pour-over coffee packets are the simplest, best-tasting pour-over coffee you're going to get on the road. Tear open the packet, set it atop your mug (or hotel room cup), and pour over boiling water. The company's own coffee wasn't strong enough for my tastes, but Dripkit partners with Portland's Stumptown Coffee Roaster to make a pour-over kit that brews an excellent cup of joe. The packets are disposable, so use these sparingly.

We've linked to the 5-pack below, but you can also opt for a 10-pack or go the subscription route and save some dough. It can get pricey, but when you want to travel light without sacrificing taste, this is the way to go.

Best for Endless Possibilities

The Delter Press bears some resemblance to the AeroPress, but it adds something to the equation: pressure. The Delter Press is not an espresso maker, but it does, in my experience, brew stronger than the AeroPress. I also found it possible to control the strength (taste-wise) to an almost infinite degree by varying the grind, the amount of coffee, and the amount of water. One thing I like better with the Delter is the ability to add more water without starting a new brew, something that's not possible with the AeroPress.

Delter suggests starting with a medium to fine grind, but I got enjoyable results even with a very fine espresso grind. To me, this is the best part of the Delter—it offers a wide variety of brewing possibilities, making it easy to tailor the results to your individual tastes.

Espro portable french press

Best Portable French Press

The Espro Ultralight Press is the simplest and lightest French press I tested. It also produces the least amount of sediment, a common problem in French press brewing that leaves a gritty mouthfeel every time you drink. This didn't happen with the Ultralight Press. It's double-walled and vacuum insulated, which means it will keep your hot coffee hot and iced coffee cold (about three hours on hot and five on cold in my testing). One of my favorite parts of the Espro is that with a quick rinse it can double as a water bottle when you're done with your coffee.

Palmpress coffee brewer device

Best Compact Design

The Palmpress is a press-to-brew solution that packs up small and is pretty lightweight as well. One of the nice things about it is there's nothing extra needed: no filters and no cleaning brushes. It's simple to brew, and once I got the ground dialed in (a finer ground works best, but it's worth experimenting), the result is a clean, bright flavor with almost no bitterness. This was especially true with medium roasts, which I found to be the best choice for the Palmpress. My only concern is that it does require pressure, so you'll need a sturdy mug. Flimsy hotel cups won't work.

Ovrlndr french press

Best Camp Brewer

Planetary Design appears to have run out of vowels, but that's OK because it has managed to turn out a great French press for when you're at camp. The Ovrlndr is solid, if a bit heavy, and unlike every other French press I've used, it's super easy to clean. Unscrew the bottom, dump the grounds in the compost, rinse, and you're done. As with other Planetary Design presses, the Ovrlndr features the Brü-Stop filter system. It consists of an extra-fine screen and silicone ring that creates a tight seal against the side of the mug to prevent grounds from escaping into your coffee. I still also like our former Planetary Design pick, the Double Shot 3.0 mug ($42) , but I prefer the larger capacity and easier cleaning of the Ovrlndr.

Pipamoka portable coffee maker

Best for Mild Coffee

This Wacaco gadget has the most unusual brewing method out of all the testing I've done. It's a vacuum-pressure brewer that works by twisting. You fill a brewing chamber with coffee, and the insulated container with water, and then you drop the coffee chamber into the water and let it settle to the bottom. Once the air bubbles are out, you begin twisting the brewing mechanism up and out of the mug portion (which doubles as a mug, keeping the coffee hot for hours). I highly recommend watching the video to get a better sense of how it works. It may be odd, but the results are great. I found it works especially well with milder coffees, picking up the subtlety of lighter roasts.

GSI collapsable portable coffee maker

Best for Backpacking

When you want to go ultra-light and ultra-compact but still want to brew quality coffee, GSI's collapsible pour-over coffee maker is your best choice. It weighs a mere 5 ounces and collapses down to about the size of the lid of an old coffee tin. It's also made of durable silicone.

When extended, it's around the height of your standard drip cone filter. Technically it takes #4 filters, though in a pinch you can use just about any filter (you'll need to be more careful with smaller filters). The bottom has a series of rings that mean the GSI balances well on any container, including wide-mouth water bottles, Jet-Boil pots , your standard cheap insulated camping mugs, and even my favorite drip-free, spill-free Contigo mug ($17) . This version includes a handy hand-grinder, too.

Primula Moka portable coffee maker

Best for Frustrated Espresso Lovers

I have tried several dozen different ways of making coffee, and I always come back to the Moka pot. The classic Moka pot is the Bialetti 6-cup model , which you'll find in nearly every house in Italy, but I prefer this stainless steel version. A Moka pot is not quite espresso. The pressure is generally about 2 to 3 bar—to qualify as espresso you need to hit 9 bar—but it's less effort and easier to clean up. It's not the most portable way to make coffee, which is why it's not my top pick. Still, nine times out of 10, this is what you'll find me using at home, at campgrounds, and even in hotel rooms with a portable camp stove. (Yes, I'm that guy, please don't tell the hotel manager.)

Brewing Secrets

There are three basic, vital coffee brewing tips I'll impart.

Find good, fresh beans: Great coffee starts with high-quality beans. Quality beans can make even cheap brewing equipment shine. High quality means fresh. Find a local coffee roaster in your area. For testing, I used beans from Jittery Joe's Roasting Company in Athens, Georgia, specifically the Wake-n-Bake blend . (Disclosure: I worked for Jittery Joe's for many years, it's a favorite of mine.)

If you don't have a coffee roaster nearby, you can order beans online from reputable sellers like Blue Bottle Coffee or try a wide variety through a coffee subscription service like Atlas Coffee Club or my new favorite, Trade Coffee , which works directly with local roasters. I also recently tested a low-acid coffee from Trucup . It's made especially for people who have trouble with the acidity of regular coffee.

Get a quality grinder: Once you have good, freshly-roasted beans you need to grind them. You'll want a burr grinder, which grinds your beans evenly rather than chopping them like a blade grinder. I upgraded to a Hario Skerton Pro ($38) hand grinder, but if you want to go electric I recommend the Baratza Encore ($179) . If you're not sure which is right for you, be sure to read through our Best Coffee Grinders guide.

Experiment: Pick one of these coffee makers and start experimenting with it at home. If you want to have reproducible results, make sure you weigh out your beans and water using a good scale like the Apexstone scale with timer so you can track your pour-over pace, and take notes. It may sound nerdy, and it is, but after experimenting for a few days you'll likely find something you love. If you have notes, then you'll know how to make your perfect cup of coffee every time—no matter where you are.

5 Of The Best Budget-Friendly Alternatives To Makita's Portable Coffee Maker

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

One of Makita's strangest tools  is its portable coffee maker. With a Makita battery, the coffee machine can be taken camping , on a job site, or practically anywhere else where you'll be craving a piping-hot cup of joe. However, not everyone is willing to shell out $154 for the device. Thankfully, there are budget-friendly options on the market, and in this article, we will take a look at five alternatives.

Depending on what you plan on doing with the device, some of the alternatives on this list may better suit your needs; for example, some of the listed coffee makers don't need electricity or batteries, relying on open flames and French pressing to produce a cup of coffee. This significantly lowers the weight of the coffee maker in some cases. There are also coffee makers on this list that can brew coffee in the car for busy professionals on the go.

For this article, we chose a wide range of products to present something for multiple types of consumers. Each product was carefully selected based on professional or user reviews. A more detailed explanation of our methodology is available at the end of the article.

Stanley Adventure All-In-One Boil + Brew French Press

The $26  Stanley Adventure All-In-One Boil + Brew French Press can brew up coffee outdoors. To turn your coffee grounds into hot coffee, fill the press with water and place it on a fire or electric burner to bring the water to a boil. Then, throw in the coffee grounds, let it brew for a few minutes, and press the plunger down. After the coffee is pressed, pour the coffee out of the spout at the top into a cup. The upside of this device is you don't need a separate container to boil the water.

Because the coffee-making process is about as simple as it gets, the Stanley device only weighs 14.88 ounces. That, combined with the ability to fold the handle onto the cup, makes it a solid choice for hiking or storing in a cramped bag. Another benefit of this device is that the parts are replaceable, so if the lid breaks, you can buy a replacement instead of a whole new brewer.

The Stanley Adventure has close to 9,000 ratings on Amazon, with an average customer review of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Reviewers agree that the cup is sturdy and easy to clean. They also mentioned that you can use it to boil water for other purposes, such as making tea.

KreeySant Portable Espresso Machine

KreeySant's Portable Electric Espresso Machine  is a solid choice for those craving more than just black coffee. The device, measuring 3.07 inches in diameter and 10.24 inches in height, is portable and slim enough to fit in a bag. When out of the kitchen, you can operate the machine in your car via 12V/24V charging. This device heats the water for you, and you can input either cold or hot water for brewing. The brewing process takes five minutes when hot water is supplied and 10 minutes when cold water is used.

This $82.99 device is both a coffee maker and a cup; although you can pour coffee from the bottle, you can also drink straight from it. The cup's insulation keeps heat in and prevents scalding. On the side of the machine is a temperature readout, so you can quickly tell if your coffee is too hot or cold. Another standout feature of this coffee maker is that it is not loud, producing 35 dB of sound during operation.

The coffee maker has a 4 out of 5-star rating on Amazon. One of the biggest praises customers gave was that it is easy to clean, as the device is made of only a few parts. Users note that it is well-made with stainless steel and does not feel cheap. However, some wished it was battery-powered so a cord would not be necessary.

Chefman Instacoffee Max+

The $59.99  Chefman Instacoffee Max+  is a portable drip coffee machine with a 40-ounce water reservoir. Its large reservoir makes it suitable for those who want to reduce the frequency with which they must fill their machine with water. The device is versatile, able to brew 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce cups of coffee. It's also compatible with K-cups and ground coffee using the included reusable coffee basket, furthering its versatility.

To brew the coffee, you must plug the device into an outlet; however, the device weighs only 3 pounds without water, allowing coffee lovers to take it to a job site or elsewhere. Another nifty feature of this brewer is its cup lift, which allows you to adjust the distance from your cup to the spout to reduce splashing. You can then brew the coffee by pressing your desired cup size at the device's base.

The Chefman Instacoffee Max+ has a rating of 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Customers noted that the product is easy to use, portable, and fast, only taking around 30 seconds to brew coffee in some cases. A common complaint was that the water reservoir can be difficult to fill because it is at the back of the mechanism. Some customers also found the buttons to fail after a while.

Wacaco Nanopresso

Wacaco's $84.90 Nanopresso portable espresso maker is the smallest coffee maker on this list, measuring 6.14 inches in length. Brewing coffee with this device involves adding hot water and coffee grounds, flipping the device upside down, and then pumping the retractable plunger to drip the coffee out. The pump can handle 261 psi (18 bars) of stable pressure, which the company claims produces better quality coffee. Because of its size, you won't be getting a lot of water in there, with the cap at 2.7 fluid ounces of water. The device is simple to clean, as the components can be taken apart. An accessory bundled with this machine is Wacaco's NS Adaptor, which allows you to use Nanopresso capsules.

Derek Rose from The Spruce Eats was impressed with the device's portability and liked that there was a portable cup attached to the machine, giving it a 4 out of 5 rating and calling it one of their favorite espresso machines. They added that the final product was tasty, although sometimes inconsistent, and that it produced only a little coffee. TechRadar gave it similar praise with a 4.5 out of 5-star rating. Unlike Rose, however, the outlet did deduct points for the device needing boiling water to brew.

Mini Travel Single Serve Coffee Maker

The  Mini Travel Single Serve Coffee Maker  from AdirChef is another coffee maker for those who want a hands-off brewing process. Despite needing to plug into an outlet, it's relatively portable at 5.1 inches deep, 6.7 inches wide, and 10.1 inches tall. It can be a solid  coffee gadget for a camping trip , provided you can supply the power. AdirChef's major selling point is that this coffee maker only takes 15 seconds from when you press the button to the coffee hitting your cup. But you aren't restricted to just coffee; the device can also make tea.

The coffee maker includes a 15-ounce insulated stainless steel travel mug, a removable filter, and a filter basket. One feature that some may find useful is that it automatically turns off after the coffee is dispensed. This can come in handy when powering the coffee maker with a generator or solar panel to prevent you from unnecessarily draining power.

At 4.4 out of 5 stars, customers overwhelmingly approve of the $29.98 Mini Travel Single Serve Coffee Maker. Many customers left reviews stating they were impressed with the build quality, considering the price. They also overwhelmingly agreed that the coffee comes out at an ideal temperature, and brewing takes only a few minutes. One complaint in the reviews was that the power button could become faulty.

Why Were These Coffee Makers Chosen?

For this list, we prioritized showcasing a wide range of product types. The only thing every coffee maker on this list has in common is that they are portable. The list has options for whether or not the individual has a power source to brew the coffee, needs to fit the device in a small bag, or prefers an espresso.

Although we prioritized professional reviews when assessing whether a product belongs on the list, not all of the devices were reviewed by professionals. For those, we looked over dozens to hundreds of user reviews for each product to determine if it deserved a spot on the list. Some of the things we looked out for were portability, quality, and ease of use. Is Lidl's £49.99 coffee machine any good?

Serveware, Cup, Drinkware, Tableware, Dishware, Small appliance, Coffee cup, Carmine, Cameras & optics, Photography,

From cheap skiwear to leather jackets for under £15 and budget garden furniture and suitcases, Lidl has become as known for its fantastic special offers as its good value food.

How does the supermarket manage to sell big ticket items at such knock-down prices? By only selling a limited run of them. The Silvercrest Retro Espresso Machine went on sale this Thursday (28 May) and is expected to already be out of stock just over a week later (Friday 5 June).

Lidl's coffee maker is available in red, cream and black and its beautiful retro design certainly looks the part. It uses a portafilter system and 15-bar pump pressure.

The swizzle steam nozzle allows users to make larger cappuccinos as well as smaller espressos. It also comes with an espresso scoop, tamper and detachable tray for cleaning.

Is it any good?   We were excited to try out this bargain espresso coffee machine but unfortunately, overall, we weren't wowed by its performance.

On the plus side it was straightforward to operate with some nifty design features, like its easily visible water tank and the milk frother worked well, producing a stable foam. We also love the retro design.

However, the coffee we made had a slightly burnt taste and lacked a good crema. We struggled to fit a standard size mug under the filter and it also leaked badly after use, making it quite a chore to clean up after.

Our verdict? It's great value but it's not going to produce an espresso any Italian is going to shout about.

Customer Review (source: Amazon) I've been using the Bodum Travel Press since 2018 and it's been great for my needs. It's compact and durable, ideal for my preference for a larger volume of coffee. While it's best to drink the coffee soon after brewing, I sometimes leave it in longer which slightly changes the consistency. It's enough for three tea cups if filled to the max. I love adding just a pinch of cinnamon and a cardamom seed for flavor. The stainless steel body pairs well with my mobile hot water jug, making it easy to prepare coffee anywhere without indigestion or heartburn issues. My only small issue is with the mesh element becoming slightly loose, but overall, it's a fantastic choice for households with different coffee routines. I recommend it for its mobility in terms of fitting into our varying coffee times, more than just for travel.

I first got this coffee maker in 2016 when I was deployed and needed a reliable way to make espresso. It's traveled with me to 7 countries and 25 states, providing countless moments of morning bliss. Recently, after 7 years, the pump gave out. I reached out to Staresso for a replacement part and was impressed to find they still offer support. I decided to upgrade to the new model, which has improved features like a better-insulated hot water chamber and an easier-to-remove screen in the grind cup. The flavor is creamy and nutty, perfect for those moments when you need a quick coffee escape. I'm excited to take my new machine on more adventures!

My coworkers are fans too, and I've even started bringing it camping. I bought a second one for my camper. It's super easy to use, but you have to ensure the clear plug at the bottom is properly seated to avoid any mess. In the four years I've had it, it's only come loose a couple of times. The inventor of this is a genius, and I'm so grateful for it!

7. Best for Pour-Over

lidl travel coffee maker

Coffee Gator Pour Over Coffee Maker

Delivers an authentic pour-over coffee experience without the need for paper filters. Appeals to those who appreciate quality construction and eco-friendly options.

  • Authentic Pour-Over Experience : Delivers true pour-over coffee taste.
  • Travel-Friendly : Easy to carry for coffee on the go.
  • Eco-Friendly : Uses a reusable stainless steel filter, no need for paper filters.
  • Fragility of Glass : The glass component may be prone to breakage, but a satisfaction guarantee is offered.

The Coffee Gator is a haven for pour-over purists. If you revel in the ritual of pour-over brewing and desire a richer, more nuanced cup, this coffee maker promises to elevate your daily brewing experience, wherever you are.

Customer Review (source: Amazon) I was initially hesitant about this pour-over coffee maker, but it's truly transformed my coffee routine. Its durability is impressive, as long as it's handled carefully. Preheating the carafe and mug enhances the warmth and aroma of the coffee significantly. I've adopted the habit of cleaning it right after use without soap, which, to my surprise, improves the coffee's flavor over time, reminiscent of the way a cast iron skillet works. It's crucial to use warm water for rinsing to prevent the glass from cracking. This brewing method requires a bit more time and attention, not ideal for those in a hurry. However, the effort to perfect the grind and brewing technique is worth it. Once you experience it, you might never want to switch back to regular coffee. I highly recommend this pour-over coffee maker to any coffee enthusiast!

8. Best for Integrated Brewing

  • Thermal Properties : Keeps coffee hot while remaining cool to the touch.

  • Eco-Friendly : Features a reusable double mesh filter.

Ideal for the on-the-go coffee drinker who appreciates both brewing and sipping in style. The Cahlis mug is perfect for those who want a seamless transition from brewing to enjoying their coffee, all within a single, sleek device.

Customer Review (source: Amazon) I absolutely love this pour-over coffee cup! The filter is incredibly sturdy and doesn't let any coffee grounds through, which is such a smart design. It's also super easy to clean. I was so impressed with my first one that I bought another for my husband. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great pour-over experience.

Benefits of a Travel Coffee Maker

While traveling, you can nip into the nearest Starbucks and enjoy a good cup of coffee. You might be wondering why you need a portable coffee maker. The simple answer to this question is that brewing your coffee is far more satisfying and cost-effective. Also, you likely won't find a Starbucks on remote highways.

Here are some of the benefits that a travel coffee maker brings with itself:

Convenience: Making a cup of coffee is highly convenient using a portable coffee maker. Some even let you do that at the simple touch of a hand, while others require little manual labor. Travel coffee makers enable you to enjoy your favorite cup of coffee even on the go.

Affordability: A full-fledged coffee maker can be expensive. On the other hand, a portable coffee maker is much more affordable. Many people use mobile coffee makers at their homes simply because it is cheaper. In addition, while you are traveling, you will save plenty of bucks by skipping coffee chains and making your coffee instead.

Portability: It is a no-brainer that travel coffee makers are portable and easy to carry. You can easily fit most of them in your bag and take them without even noticing their presence.

Types of Coffee Makers

If you are a regular coffee drinker, you should know the difference between the different types of coffee makers. Just like standard coffee makers, travel coffee makers can also be segregated according to their types. Knowing which one you should get before making your purchase decision is essential.

Pour-over coffee makers: Pour-over coffee makers are simple and the best option for longer journeys. They are the most compact and light weighty coffee makers. All you have to do is to carry a few grams of your favorite blend, and you can enjoy your favorite cup of coffee. These coffee makers work by pouring steaming water on coffee beans or ground coffee. The liquid is then collected at their base.

French Coffee Makers: French press coffee makers make a rich and robust cup of coffee. They work by immersing all of the coffee in hot water, which captures more of its natural flavor. As a result, you get a strong cup of coffee. You will love the French coffee maker if you are a heavy coffee drinker. The downside of French coffee makers is that they are more challenging to clean than others.

Espresso Makers: Those who love dark coffee would love a portable Espresso maker. It will give you a big flavor on the go. Espresso machines apply pressure to the beans and spill out the maximum flavor giving the same result as other coffee machines.

The Best Single-Serve Coffee Maker for a Quick and Easy Cup That Actually Tastes Good

lidl travel coffee maker

By Emily Farris

A Nespresso VertuoPlus and a Bruvi Brewer on a kitchen countertop.

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

A whopping 33 million households in the US use a Keurig machine. But popularity doesn’t always connote quality, and Keurig is far from the best single-serve coffee maker you can buy—though after testing 12 popular makes and models, I can confidently say there are worse options out there.

The good news? Because America’s collective craving for convenient pod coffee spawned a whole category of competitors, you now have your pick of high-quality alternatives. Many manufacturers have even addressed  the plastic pod problem Keurig created by making more sustainable capsules out of recyclable or biodegradable materials.

While the best single-serve coffee makers can’t yet compete with good  pour-over coffee  or  the best espresso machines , they are capable of brewing really good coffee, and sometimes good “espresso”, too (I’ll use quotes as a nod to any readers who want to get metaphysical about what exactly is required for a real espresso shot). But people don’t buy capsule coffee for its taste alone. The appeal of a pod machine is that it’s quick, easy, and requires very little thought or cleanup. And my top pick happens to require the least thought of any machine I tested. It also produces some of the best coffee and espresso-style shots. Find the top pick for single-serve coffee after all the testing below, and keep reading to learn more about how I tested and what I really thought of the 11 other machines I tried.

The best single-serve coffee maker How we tested What I looked for Other machines tested The takeaway

The best single serve coffee maker: Nespresso Vertuo Plus

If you want a single-serve coffee maker that makes great coffee and espresso with little to no effort, I enthusiastically recommend the Nespresso VertuoPlus. It should be noted that  Nespresso predates Keurig , and this machine is part of the brand’s newer Vertuoline, which employs a precision brewing system for one-touch fool-proof coffee drinks. In the world of coffee pods, this machine is a game changer.

Here’s how it works: The rim of every dome-shaped Verto capsule is printed with a barcode with information about what’s inside. All the user has to do is tap the lever to open the lid, pop in a pod, close the lid, and press the machine’s only button. The machine then reads the barcode and automatically adjusts the settings to brew a cup of coffee or shot of espresso suited to the coffee inside the pod every single time.

The VertuoPlus heats up in just 20 seconds and uses centrifuge technology to make smooth, well-balanced coffee and espresso in four sizes ranging from 1.35 to 8 ounces, with a beautiful crema in every cup. (I really enjoy my coffee with a  stirred-in crema , but if you don’t, Nespresso machines aren’t for you, because crema is unavoidable.)

Features include a removable 40-ounce water tank (the Deluxe model holds 60 ounces) that can be rotated to make it fit on your counter and a drip tray that can be adjusted or removed to accommodate both short espresso cups and tall travel mugs. Used pods automatically fall into an attached receptacle that can hold at least 10 large capsules, and other than keeping the water tank full and descaling every six months or so, this machine doesn’t need any cleaning or maintenance. A small selection of Nespresso Vertuo pods can be found at Target, Amazon, and other big box retailers, but you’ll find far more variety (and less Starbucks branding) at  Nespresso.com , where you can also set up a subscription so you never run out of your favorites.

What I didn’t love about the Nespresso Vertuo Plus

Nespresso offers  free recycling bags with prepaid UPS labels for returning used pods, but for those who don’t have easy access to a UPS driver or drop-off point, the process may be tedious. (New Yorkers however, can drop their pods right into their blue recycling bins, no bag required.) And though I appreciate that Nespresso’s pods are fully and easily recyclable, this is one of the few single-serve coffee machines that doesn’t officially accommodate a reusable pod. Given the barcode system, a refillable pod likely wouldn’t produce a great cup of Joe, and customer reviews of  after-market options support this theory. Still, Nespresso’s proprietary capsules and lack of a refillable option are certainly drawbacks for those who would rather avoid single-use pods altogether.

Nespresso Vertuo Plus Deluxe Coffee and Espresso Machine by De'Longhi, Titan

How I tested single-serve coffee makers

In an attempt to find the best single-serve coffee maker, I drank a  lot of good, bad, and in-between coffee, sampling different roasts, brew sizes, and styles. Because some brewers only accept proprietary pods, it was impossible to compare apples to apples across the board, but I did my best to find something that would be compatible with a majority of the machines. I ended up with a selection of Starbucks Veranda pods I could use in all but one (the Bruvi) and the lighter roast made it easier to detect the notes and nuance in each cup. Acknowledging  my own bias in this category, I also tested the K-cup compatible machines using higher-end  pods from the Italian brand Illy . Additionally, I used freshly-ground coffee to test the machines with refillable pods. As I eliminated the worst machines, I continued to evaluate the remaining contenders with side-by-side taste tests.

What I looked for

The big selling point of any pod machine is convenience so I looked for machines that were easy to use and considered the following: How many buttons does a user have to push before brewing a cup of coffee? Is the interface intuitive or too complicated? If the machine offers options for different brew types and sizes, do they feel overwhelming or still convenient? Is the water reservoir sufficient for making multiple cups of coffee or does it need to be refilled for each use?

I won’t pretend that even the very best pod machine makes the best cup coffee, but within this category there’s a broad spectrum that ranges from “quite good” to “godawful.” I gave preference to machines that could produce a well-balanced cup of coffee with a smooth finish.

These machines are made for use in residential kitchens and since not everybody has unlimited counterspace, I looked for machines that didn’t have a huge footprint. Even better if they could tuck under upper cabinets.

While most single-serve coffee makers aren’t prohibitively expensive, they’re still an investment, so I looked for machines that felt like they were built to last. I also considered whether the manufacturer offered any sort of warranty.

Daily maintenance would kind of defeat the purpose of these quick-and-easy coffee makers so I considered the following: Does the machine require any sort of daily cleaning? If so, is it easy? Is there a receptacle for pods or do they need to be manually removed after each use? How often does the machine need to be descaled? Are the instructions for cleaning and descaling clear and easy to follow? Is there a disposable water filter that needs to be regularly replaced or a reusable filter that requires special care?

If something is going to take up semi-permanent residence on your countertop, you want it to look good. With that in mind, I paid attention to the style and finishes of each machine.

Other single-serve pod coffee makers I tested

The Essenza Mini is a compact single-serve espresso maker that’s part of Nespresso’s Original line. Unlike the VertuoLine’s centrifuge extraction, the Original machines use pressure-driven extraction and smaller, more angular pods. This mini brewer uses 19 bars of pressure to extract one of two cup sizes from Original pods: a 1.35-ounce single espresso shot or a 3.7-ounce Lungo. (It should be noted that while 19 bars of pressure is more than double the standard nine bars required of a professional espresso machine, the experts at Home Grounds  advise against reading too much into that number because a lot of the pressure is actually diminished within the less-powerful brewing mechanisms of a plug-and-go machine.) Though the Essenza Mini technically doesn’t make regular coffee, it’s certainly worth considering if you want a high-quality compact machine and prefer to drink lattes, cappuccinos, or americanos over a standard cup of drip-style coffee. The removable drip tray and water tank also make this small machine super easy to travel with or store.

Though L’or machines have been available in France since the 90s, the L’or Barista Coffee & Espresso System is only starting to gain popularity in the US. Like the Nespresso Vertuo, it brews both coffee and espresso-style drinks, but the process is slightly different. The L’or accepts both the brand’s proprietary coffee capsules as well as Nespresso Original espresso pods (you can use L’or espresso pods in an Original Nespresso machine and vice versa). Operating the machine is simple; for either drink style, you can choose between three brew sizes and coffee or espresso is extracted under 19 bars of pressure through two dispensing spouts—which produce a crema that rivals Nespresso’s. In my final round of testing, I brewed the same pods at the same size (3.7 ounces) in this machine and the Nespresso Essenza Mini and while the differences were subtle, I consistently found that the espresso from the Nespresso machine was ever-so-slightly more balanced with a smoother finish. Overall, this is one of the only single serve coffee makers I tested that feels like a true competitor to Nespresso, but the system would benefit from printing cup size recommendations on the pods (e.g. “this pod tastes best when brewed small”).

L'OR The Barista System Coffee and Espresso Machine

Of all the single serve coffee makers I tested, the Instant Dual Pod Plus was the most pleasant surprise. From the maker of  the do-it-all Instant Pot , this machine has the ability to brew a good cup of coffee or espresso-style shot from K-Cups, Original Nespresso pods, and the brand’s own compostable pods (NOTE: they require an industrial composting environment rather than a regular old backyard compost pile). Additionally there’s an included refillable pod for brewing single servings of your favorite coffee, as well as a hot water button for tea. This brewer delivered on all fronts and even produced a nice crema on the espresso shots. The regular coffee was far better than anything I got from a Keurig, too. If you like really hot coffee, the Dual Pod Plus brews slightly hotter than the Nespresso and other machines I tried, but not so hot that it scorches the coffee. While I wouldn’t want to replace my VertuoPlus with this (it’s pretty big and I could go the rest of my life without ever consuming another K-Cup), I’d be happy if I walked into a hotel or vacation rental to find this on the counter. Because it’s so versatile, it’s also a great option for a home with both Nespresso and K-cup devotees, as well as small offices and teachers’ lounges.

Epi’s reviews editor, Noah Kaufman is a big fan of the Bruvi single-serve coffee brewer —and for good reason. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, it has a lot to offer in terms of functionality. The touch-screen control panel allows users to choose between eight cup sizes and it features a selection of one-touch brewing options including buttons for low acid, americano, iced coffee, and cold brew. Of course, any single-serve coffee maker can be used to brew coffee or espresso-style shots over ice, but the Bruvi’s cold brew setting takes a few more minutes than a hot drink and uses cooler water, too. Similar to the Nespresso Vertuoline, the Bruvi reads data on the proprietary pods and adjusts a variety of brewing factors accordingly, but the user still can pick the highlighted default cup size or select another—and there’s always the option to make manual modifications by tapping the screen for “stronger,” “hotter,” or “low acid.” When brewed in eight ounce sizes without any additional settings, the light- and medium-roast coffees were well-balanced and nuanced—especially for something from a pod machine. That said, there was always a little sediment in the bottom of my cup and I was far less impressed with the espressos I tried. Because Bruvi is very new to the market, there are fewer coffee pod options than you’d get with Nepresso or Keurig, but the beans are sustainably sourced and the brand promises that the treated polypropylene cups will mostly break down in a landfill, so you avoid any confusion over what is recyclable or what type of composter your pod is appropriate for (Bruvi also recently released  a refillable pod for those who want to use their own specialty coffee). If you want the convenience of a pod machine with the kind of versatility and functionality you’d get from  a high-end drip coffee maker , the Bruvi is a great choice—though it may be too robust and pricey for some coffee drinkers who just want something quick and easy in the mornings.

The Bruvi Bundle

The Vertuo Next is another machine from Nespresso’s Vertuoline and while it brews just as beautifully as the Vertuo Plus I recommend above, it has a few features that set it apart. First, the pros: Though this is smaller than the Vertuo Plus, it can brew bigger coffee sizes. Where the Plus brews four sizes and can make a maximum of eight ounces of coffee from one pod, the Next has five brew size options and accepts pods that brew 18 ounces at a time (there’s a  compatible carafe that can be used with the larger pods, too). If you love the quality and ease of a Nespresso but want the ability to brew more than a single cup at once, this is a good option. But because the Next is a smaller machine, it has a slightly smaller water reservoir than the Plus, and the top of the Next doesn’t open automatically, either. Instead, it has to be locked and unlocked via a lever on the lid, and it takes a little too much force to make it happen, especially until you get used to the mechanism. Finally, it has Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity—which seems kinda gimmicky but some users may appreciate receiving maintenance alerts and firmware updates, as well as capsule tracking so you can remember to order more before you run out. Overall, using this machine was a less pleasant experience than using the VertuoPlus, so if you don’t need the 18-ounce pour or the app connectivity, you may want to pass on this model in favor of the Plus.

Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee and Espresso Machine by De'Longhi

The Cuisinart Premium Single Serve Brewer is a popular one-cup coffee maker that works with K-Cups and also comes with a reusable mesh pod you can fill with your favorite ground coffee. It’s billed as fully programmable, and the simple control panel allows users to pick one of five cup sizes and two brew temperatures (other features, like the auto-on and shutoff seem somewhat unnecessary for a single cup coffee brewer). The removable 72-ounce water tank means you won’t have to fill it too often, but it does require a  charcoal filter insert that needs to be replaced every 60 days or after 60 uses. While this machine can’t compete with the Nespresso, it’s certainly an upgrade if you’re used to using a Keurig. In multiple rounds of testing using the same K-Cups in both, the coffee from the Cuisinart consistently had more depth of flavor and was less murky. (One thing to note about the reusable pod: I initially had issues getting the machine to register the fact that I’d inserted it and only got it to work when I rotated the adapter about 5 degrees clockwise from the supposedly proper alignment.)

Cuisinart Premium Single Serve Brewer

Ninja’s DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System is a modular brewer centered around a 12-cup drip coffee maker with a detachable milk frother and K-Cup adapter. While this machine has a lot going for it—including a bevy of options for brew size and strength—if you’re looking for the convenience of a pod machine, you’ll likely find this too big and too complicated. It’s a drip coffee maker first; the frother and K-cup capabilities are add-ons and the whole thing has to be reconfigured to switch between carafe mode and single-serve mode. That said, if you mostly make pots of coffee but want the ability to pop in a pod every once in a while, this could be a good choice if you have the counter space to spare. It brews K-cups better than a Keurig machine and while the model I tested came with a few starter paper filters for brewing into the carafe, you can also get a  reusable mesh filter if you want to cut down on waste. I wasn’t able to find Ninja brand refillable pods but there are some compatible  aftermarket options that look promising.

Ninja DualBrew Pro System 12-Cup Coffee Maker

As I write this, the Keurig K-Mini is Amazon's top-selling single-serve brewer. And I understand why: It's incredibly compact, it comes in a  variety of pretty colors , it has a price point around $100, and K-Cups dominated the market long enough that they're now the default for  tens of millions of American households. If I didn’t know anything about coffee or just wanted something to have on hand to offer guests a cup, I might pick this machine too. But I do know better and after trying a wide variety of pods, I didn’t get one decent cup of coffee out of the K-Mini or the more expensive Keurig I tested. There was no depth of flavor, and the coffee was consistently watery and overly bitter at the same time. Additionally, the internal water reservoir in this machine only holds enough for one cup and needs to be refilled with every brew.

Keurig K-Mini Coffee Maker

The K-Supreme Smart Single Serve Coffee Maker seems to be Keurig’s attempt to compete with the Nespresso Vertuo line. It is not a close second. Even if I ignore the fact that it makes bad coffee, the technology doesn’t live up to the marketing claims and the machine itself can’t seem to handle some of its own features. It does have options for brew strength and temperature, and you can save up to 10 of your favorite settings as presets, but the whole system leaves a lot to be desired. One of the main selling points is that the K-Supreme Smart is supposed to recognize what K-Cup pod you put in it and customize the brew settings accordingly, though you do still need to choose your brew size  (6, 8, 10, or 12 ounces) and you can adjust the brew temperature if you’d like, too. App connectivity allows for remote brewing (a feature that seems pointless to me for a single-serve device) and K-cup pod inventory management (possibly helpful), but the machine froze when I tried to brew back-to-back cups of coffee. I actually had to unplug it a few times to get the “please wait” message off of the display. This Keurig does have a 66-ounce water reservoir, but no pod receptacle; the used K-cups need to be removed by hand after each brew.

Keurig K-Supreme Smart Single Serve Coffee Maker

The coffee from the Keurigs set a low bar. The Hamilton Beach FlexBrew unfortunately went under it. It  is a versatile single-serve coffee maker that allows for brewing three cup sizes and two brew strengths, comes with a reusable pod for brewing your own ground coffee, and has a removable 40-ounce water tank. It also has a hot water button for tea, instant ramen, and the like. On paper, it looks pretty good. Unfortunately, it makes a lot of noise when it’s working, and worse, brews noticeably hotter than the other machines I tested. It brewed so hot that it scalded the coffee. Even locally-roasted, freshly-ground beans couldn’t redeem this thing. If you’re looking for an affordable alternative to the Keurig that also lets you use whatever type of coffee you want in a reusable pod, this is  not it.

The Epi product testing team has been pleasantly surprised by a handful of Amazon Basics gadgets (Exhibit A:  the kitchen scale ) so I was curious to see if the single-serve coffee maker was worth considering. It is not. When I brewed the same K-cup pod in this machine and a Keurig, the dark liquid that came out of the Amazon house brand’s coffee maker was worse in every way (taste, texture, and temperature). It reminded me of something I’d drink out of styrofoam and desperation while waiting all day for a car repair. Sadly, the freshly-ground, high-quality coffee I put into the reusable pod wasn’t much better. This one is a hard pass.

The Takeaway

If you want really good coffee and “espresso” with very little effort, the  Nespresso VertuoPlus is the best single-serve coffee maker you can buy. Every brew is consistent, the capsules are fully recyclable through Nespresso’s free recycling program, and the machine requires virtually no cleaning or maintenance.
