20 years of Safari: A visual history

Safari @ 20: Visual history.

Over the past 20 years, Apple’s Safari web browser grew from a speedy young upstart to a polished professional. Released on this day in 2003 as a free download, Safari has been bundled with every version of the Mac operating system since.

Take a trip down memory lane as we look at how Safari has evolved over the years.

A visual history of Apple’s web browser, Safari

Like any Apple product that survives more than one generation, the look of Safari has morphed over time. Both the browser’s design and its features changed as Cupertino strived to make Safari the best it could be. And, as with so many Apple products, the browser that started out fast but buggy evolved over the next two decades into something beautiful and reliable.

Perhaps surprisingly, our saga doesn’t start with Safari itself …

Internet Explorer: Safari’s predecessor

Internet Explorer 4 on Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah

No, our story actually begins with Internet Explorer, the browser that first shipped with Mac OS 8.1 in 1997. This was a controversial shift away from Netscape , which had been the default for a few years prior.

Everyone knew the internet was going to be big. Apple would later center the iMac’s marketing on it being a great, easy-to-use computer for the internet . The partnership with Microsoft, which landed Internet Explorer on Macs, kept Apple afloat and helped it ride the internet wave.

But by 2003, Apple had got its feet on the ground. Cupertino no longer needed Bill Gates’ money.

Safari 1: A new kind of browser

Safari 1 on Panther

Steve Jobs unveiled Safari at Macworld San Francisco in 2003. Watch the introduction, and you will see people cheering and applauding Safari for taking only 16 seconds to load a web page.

The biggest selling point was the simple fact that it was an internet browser designed by Apple. Its dead-simple user interface looks shockingly modern to this day. It clearly wasn’t designed for Windows and grafted over; it was designed first and foremost for Mac OS X.

Safari 2 and 3: Made for the wide world of blogging

Safari 2 RSS

Safari 2 added a big feature for the golden age of independent blogging: RSS. Visit your favorite internet blog, click the RSS button in the address bar, and you enter what looks a bit like Reader Mode.

Safari 3 brought tabbed browsing to the Mac, catching up with competitors Firefox and OmniWeb .

Safari 4: Crisis averted

Safari 4 Tabs on Top

The Safari 4 beta controversially moved the tab bar to the top of the browser window . People complained that it was hard to distinguish between clicking and moving around the window versus reordering tabs, and that the lack of a proper title bar broke Mac conventions.

Apple reversed this design and never made any controversial choices regarding the tab bar ever again until the next time it did.

An iOS version for iPhones

Safari on iPhone

The biggest innovation to Safari since its introduction was shrinking it down to run on the original iPhone. This was a heck of a feat.

Before the iPhone arrived in 2007, cellphones technically had web browsers in much the same way an airplane can technically drive on a road. They were tiny, they were slow, and most of them were entirely text-based. Keep in mind an Apple Watch has a bigger screen than a lot of cellphones from the mid-2000s.

With Safari on iPhone, running the full, desktop-capable web on a smartphone was kind of a big deal. The internet was no longer a place in your house you sat down to use. You can watch Jobs show it off here .

A safari to the far-off lands of … the PC?

Safari on Windows

Then, an even crazier thing happened: Safari came to Windows XP and Vista. This short-lived experiment lasted from 2008 to 2012, ending with the release of Safari 6.

Safari joined iTunes as Apple’s second major app (or as they say on the PC, the second major program ) for Windows. But obviously, people didn’t take to it. iTunes lives on to this day, and Microsoft has even announced that Apple is working on brand-new Music and TV apps for the PC platform .

A fresh coat of paint glass

Safari 8 on Yosemite

Safari got its biggest visual shakeup alongside the rest of OS X Yosemite in 2014. The fresh coat of paint brightened the look of the Mac. The new design rolled the title bar and toolbar together to make for a slimmer UI.

Safari was one of many apps for OS X and iOS to introduce Continuity , a handy set of features for seamlessly switching between your Mac and your iPhone. When you approach your Mac with your phone in hand (and Safari open), you’ll see an extra Safari icon in the Dock on your Mac. Click it, and you’ll be taken to the same page you had open. I still use this feature nearly every day.

In the mid-2010s, as people became more concerned about data privacy on the internet, Safari added some privacy-conscious features . Intelligent Tracking Prevention puts strict limits on cookies to keep data miners from following your activity across the web. Automatic Strong Passwords generates unique, complicated passwords for each online account you create in the browser, syncing with all your devices over iCloud Keychain.

Apple introduced Sign In With Apple and Apple Pay on the Web more than three years ago to a mild splash of excitement, but over time they have become essential features for many users.

One interface forward, two steps back

Safari 15

Apple completely redesigned Safari in 2021, delivering a more universal look across the Mac, iPhone and iPad. The minimal, all-in-one navigation bar blended into the website you visited and tucked away all the controls.

Boy, were people angry. People don’t  want the same exact interface on the Mac as they do on the iPhone — they’re completely different devices.

Apple slowly walked back the design, piece by piece, over the months between June and September, but you can still enable the abandoned unified tab bar design in Safari Preferences.

Smarter features for the future of the web

Throughout Safari’s two-decade history, Apple consistently stuck to one simple philosophy while engineering its browser: It’s never allowed to get slower. Every new feature, every change, needs to make Safari faster. Slower is simply unacceptable.

Plus, Safari gets smarter every year. It’s been my browser of choice ever since I’ve had a Mac. So, happy birthday, Safari. Here’s to the next 20.

Apple's default browser, Safari, has turned 20 years old, so here is a look back at some of its standout improvements and features over the years.

Safari is a graphical web browser developed by Apple and launched in 2003, and created as the native web browser for all Apple devices.  Cloudwards  reports that the browser's performance is reportedly superb on both Mac and iOS, as it offers high speed and robust privacy. In addition to being among the quickest, it also offers trustworthy privacy protection.

With already 20 years since Apple first launched it, the browser has already lived through several updates and fixes, making it one of the most popular browsers today, and here's why.

Safari's on Apple Devices Over the Years

When compared to Microsoft's Internet Explorer on the Mac, Apple claimed that the original version of Safari loaded sites more than three times as quickly, according to  Mac Rumors .

Prior to Safari's creation, as part of a five-year deal between Apple and Microsoft, Internet Explorer served as Mac's default browser from 1998 until the October 2003 introduction of OS X Panther with Safari.

"Safari is the fastest browser on the Mac, and we predict that many will feel it is the best browser ever created," said former Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a past interview. "We are bringing innovation back into this category with the first all-new browser created in many years."

In January 2003, a public beta of Safari for OS X Jaguar became available. This version of the browser had significant upgrades to bookmark management, the WebKit rendering engine for quicker browsing speeds, Google search capabilities built right into the toolbar, and more.

For the iPhone and iPad, mobile versions of Safari were made available in 2007 and 2010, respectively. All of Apple's platforms continue to use WebKit in the browser.

Although Google's Chrome has since become the most widely used web browser for both PCs and Macs since its debut in 2008, Apple claims that Safari is still the fastest desktop browser available and that it loads commonly visited websites on Mac 50% faster on average than Chrome, according to  Apple 's official product site.

Safari's Best Features

The default browser for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac is Safari. While it received criticism for being fairly slow and unresponsive to web technology at first, Apple has just made groundbreaking modifications to the Safari browser, thus making it the best browser for all Mac users today.

Many other browsers, including Mozilla Firefox and Opera, are frequently compared to Safari, yet Safari outperforms its competitors. Thanks to its improved functionality.

According to  Spiceworks  review of the browser, here are some of its standout features:

  • Usability : Safari has an attractive and minimalist user interface design.
  • Security : Safari uses Google's Safe Browsing database to prevent phishing and malware. It allows fingerprinting prevention. Passwords are stored in the iCloud Keychain. Its pop-up ad blocker occasionally falls short.
  • Speed : Apple claims that, on average, commonly visited websites load 50% faster on Macbooks using Safari than Google Chrome.
  • Extensions : Safari has a relatively limited extension library.
  • Support and updates : Apple provides Safari with regular updates to fix bugs. Safari's update cycle is four to six weeks.

Great experience! The zoo is small, but the collection is great. They have a lot of really great animals, and you can feed (almost) all of them! Our favorites were the fallow deer that came right up to the feeding area, the peacock collection with different colors, and the tiny goats in the petting zoo. Plus, they had baby porcupines (porcupets) in the gift shop that you could NOT pet (for obvious reasons). 5/5, hope to visit again.

South Africa Creation Safari is Perfect for Families: 4 Reasons Why

  • Print Friendly

Maybe it has been years since you took your family on vacation. Let’s be honest, traveling with babies and toddlers has its challenges. Now that your kids are a bit older, however, a vacation might be back on your mind. But since it isn’t something you get to do all the time, you want to make it count.

Our South Africa Creation Safari is the perfect option. This Christian tour is an awe-inspiring trip for both children and adults. With dramatic African animals, creation teachings, star gazing, relaxation opportunities and children’s activities all packed into 10 days, you are sure to come home with memories that have bonded your family and lessons that will build both yours and your children’s faith.

Here are four reasons why our South African Creation Safari is perfect for families.

  • It’s adventure with relaxation

Often when it comes to vacation, some want relaxation, while others want adventure. This tour has the best of both. On the adventure front, your family can take early-morning game drives and see many of the Big Five animals , such as lions, elephants, and rhinos . You can ride elephants, walk with lions and see guides feed an assortment of safari animals.

But after all the excitement, there will be opportunities for massage, lounging by the pool, golfing, fishing, leisurely fireside dinners, and morning coffee at sunrise.

  • There are activities for you and activities for kids

Not all destinations are conducive to children. How often do you get excited for an activity only to have your kid’s groan at the prospective boredom? Or maybe you’d like to try something, but it’s dangerous or unadvised for kids.

On this tour, while you get a massage, the kids can play a sports game at the lodge. When you go walk with the lions, our hosts will take the children to view the baby lions. Our scholars will have teachings adapted both for adults and for children.

  • You don’t have to worry about planning anything. Just get your kids on the plane.

Part of the stress of traveling with children is figuring out the logistics beforehand. Where will they sleep? Where will you eat every day? Can you fit your family in the cab? You won’t have to worry about any of it on this tour. We take care of all the details for you.

It’s the best of vacation without the headaches. You simply show up, and we will take care of the rest. The tour is pre-paid, so you won’t have to take out your wallet and negotiate price. A vacation without planning, navigating, or having to problem-solve is a true vacation.

  • The teachings are geared toward both adults and children and will build your family’s faith

A family learning together about God’s creation in a dramatic setting like South Africa creates a special bond. Seeing powerful animals like lions and elephants; watching a sunrise across the plains or staring up into the vast night sky at the countless array of stars is an experience your family may have never had before. That you are all there, experiencing it together, will give you a collective appreciation for God’s creation in new ways.

You will have topics to dig into as a family for months and years to come.. Your children won’t forget this vacation – and neither will you.

Check out our South Africa Creation Safari . It’s the vacation your family has been waiting for.

How to create a new profile in Safari 17

Roman Loyola

Safari has become the ultimate resource for almost anything you do, whether it’s for work or for a personal project. You can end up with an immense number of websites and resources, so many that organizing them all is a job in itself. That’s why Apple created Safari Profiles in version 17, which I can run on macOS Monterey, Ventura, and the upcoming Sonoma.

You can create separate profiles such as Work and Personal, or profiles based on hobbies, projects, or tasks, such as Bills, School, or Backpacking. Each profile tracks its own cookies, extensions, favorites, history, and Tab Groups. Using different profiles, you can log into the same site but with different accounts. Profiles can be added to a Focus filter, and even sync between the Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Here’s how to make a profile in Safari. Check out our macOS Sonoma superguide for more information about Apple’s latest Mac operating system.

How to create a profile in Safari

  • Time to complete: 5 minutes
  • Materials required: Safari 17, macOS Sonoma

Safari Settings: Profiles

Safari 17 profile settings

Launch Safari, and then go to Safari > Settings . Click on the Profiles icon at the top of the Settings window.

Make a new profile

Safari new profile setup

Click the New Profile button to start a new profile. You can give the profile a name symbol, and color so you can easily identify it. You also have the option to create a new bookmarks folder specifically for this profile or use an existing set of bookmarks.

Enter your settings and click Create Profile .

Profile window and switching profiles

Safari profile new tab

When you open a new window for your profile, the default Start Page appears. At the top, a new section for Favorites allows you to drag and drop webpages that are saved in a bookmarks folder for that specific profile.

The rest of the Start Page shows the default sections. You can adjust what sections you want to see by clicking the Start Page setting icon at the lower right corner.

To switch profiles , look for the Profiles button in the Safari Toolbar (between the Sidebar/Tab Groups button and the Back button), which will display the name of the profile you are currently using. Click it and a pop-up menu appears, with a list of profiles you can select at the bottom of the menu.

Profile management

Safari profile list

To manage your profiles, go to Safari > Settings > Profiles . A list of profiles appears at the left of the window, and you can select a profile to manage its settings. To add another profile, click the + icon. To delete a profile, select it and click the — icon.

Each profile has two sets of settings:

  • General : allows you to change the name, symbol, color, favorites, and behavior for opening new windows or tabs.
  • Extensions : set the extension you want to use.

Safari, list bookmarks by date

I'm trying to get organised for 2022.

How do I list my bookmarks by date?

We can get most recent file information in the Finder; create date, modified date etc.

Can we get the same level of detail info on the saved bookmark?

Hi geoffrey.lacy,

Bookmarks can only be sorted manually or alphabetically by address. Here's how to do that:

creation de safari

  • Drag a bookmark or folder to a new location.
  • To copy a bookmark, Option-drag it.
  • To sort bookmarks in a bookmarks folder, Control-click the folder in the sidebar, then choose Sort By > Name or Sort By > Address. Address is the website URL.

You find more information about this here: Sort, alphabetize, or rearrange bookmarks in Safari on Mac

Présentation de Air Création

The microlight evolution from the dawn of time

1958

Francis Rogallo invents and tests for NASA flexible biconical wings intended for the space capsules entry into the atmosphere, he then creates the modern hang glider.

1960-1970

The free flight pioneers perform the first hang-gliding flights.

1980

French civil aviation officially recognizes the "Ultra-Light Motorized", admitting specific regulations based on the declaration system.

1981

The FFPLUM is born. It is chaired by Alain Dreyer and its mission is to adapt this new specific regulation in collaboration with the DGAC. At that time, a meeting between two hang-gliding enthusiasts Gilles BRU and Jean-Yves LE BIHAN would revolutionize the Pendulum Ultra-Light Motorized.

1982

The two friends settled in Ardèche created Air Concept, which after a few months became Air Création. They are developing a first tricycle, the "safari" which will be equipped with a 250-cc engine and surmounted by a wing developed by Eole 2000 (Alpha 17), then the first Air Création wings, the "Plus" range.

1984

Air Création develops the GT-Bi, a two-seater tricycle equipped with oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers with the new double surface wing designed for powered flight: the Quartz 18.

1985

To satisfy an increasing number of demanding pilots, the two friends designed the Racer, an efficient and high-performance single seater that would prove to be the all records weight-shift controlled aircraft (SX12).

On the first world championships in Millau, Jean-Yves LE BIHAN won silver, opening the way to a long list of achievements for the Air Création microlights and their pilots.

1986

Gilles BRU develops the 16SX, the best-selling wing of its time.

1988

Air Création built a 1000m² factory specially adapted to produce microlights on the Aubenas aerodrome with direct access to the runways. Gilles mainly works on wings, he is still today the father of all air creation wings, while Jean-Yves focuses on trikes. It was also during this period that a third man embarked on the adventure, Jean-Luc TILLOY took over the commercial activities.

1989

Roland Coddens set the FAI record for time to climb, reaching 3000m altitude in 6 min 32 sec at the controls of his Racer SX 12.

1990

Michel Serane set a double record by covering 1071 km aboard his Racer and without landing. For the first Edition of the Grand Prix du Silence, the Air Création pendulum won all the awards thanks to the adaptation of new 4:1 reduction gears and 5-blade propellers.

1993

The arrival at Air Création of a new important character, Antoine Cardon who joins the design office.

The wing’s production Begin with the "XP" range. These stable wings offer a wide speed range.

1994

Air Création has developed the 'GTE' tricycle range, adapted to the new regulation allowing for a maximum mass of 450kg. This tricycle is safer and more comfortable, replacing the GT-Bi.

Serge Zin reached an altitude of 9720 meters on board his Air Création ultralight and set a new world record.

1997

New ascent record for Roland Coddens, this time at 6000m in 14 min 54 sec still at the controls of a Racer.

1999

Design of a new range called “Kiss” wings.

2002

Air creation takes a new step with the appearance of a new range of wings with a stiffened profile, the "iXess", efficient, fast and stable, this wing has a high performance and is equipped with a new trim, it is a real success.

2004

After many years of research, the air creation teams are developing the Tanarg, entirely developed in CAD around its occupants, the first mechanically welded steel trike is a real revolution in the two-seater trikes. Its shock absorption chassis is designed to accommodate the new Rotax 912. It will become the standard in terms of ergonomics, safety, reliability, and above all comfort.

2009

Air Création hits very hard: Gilles and his team develop the Corset®, this patented system equips the "BioniX" wings with variable configuration, allowing to modify the characteristics in flight. This is one of the greatest advances in the weight-shift controlled aircraft.

2011

The Tandem range is expanding with the Skypper. Benefiting from the advances of the Tanarg. This new trike, a true Cross-over returns to the fundamentals of the weight-shift controlled aircrafts: lightness and simplicity. With or without fairing, it embodies the weight-shift trikes versatility.

A new wing equipped with the corset system is developed for the occasion, the NuviX.

2013

The brand develops the Pixel which succeeds the Racer, it is the rebirth of Air Creation’s single seaters.D.S.T.E. wing design (Double Surface with External Transversal), marketed under the name "iFun", its economical wings are extremely versatile and fit on all Air Création tricycles.

2016

The BioniX² is born, this BioniX improved version is the top variable geometry wings result, thanks to its Corset® improvement and other modifications, the X² is more flexible, more stable, more durable, faster, safer …

The iFun wings are offered in a foldable version on the tricycle, the “iFun SP” (Short Pack)

2017

The company acquires a first 3D printer, making it possible to accelerate and optimize the prototyping phases but also to produce complex parts. Others will follow later, today 3D printing is an integral part of our production.

Antoine DEMELLIER pilot, instructor and specialist in ULM Air Création joins the commercial branch of the company.

2018

Air Création is equipped with a high-performance laser plotter-cutter for making wings, considerably increasing the team’s production and the comfort. This tool improves the wings quality to high precision.

2019

The Tanarg gets an improvement in neo version, thus allowing the integration of Rotax 912 iS engines (injection). This new model has optimized comfort, performance, safety, silence, aesthetics, aerodynamics and becomes the weight-shift trikes quintessence.

Colin Fargher covers 783.9 km aboard his skypper and breaks the straight-line distance record.

2021

Evolution of the Skypper, there in evo version, integrating the Rotax 912 iS engine, its new ergonomics makes it more aesthetic, more comfortable and even more versatile. The Skypper evo allows the development of the Bush version, the off-field weight-shift controlled aircraft is designed for "STOL" use. It is accompanied by the iFun XL, the large surface wing developed specifically for this use.
