The airport designed to be the successor of Chicago Midway International Airport covers a total area of 7,627 acres (3,087 ha) of land. The airport operates flights to over 228 destinations across the globe including European countries, South America, North America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

History of O’Hare International Airport

O’Hare was a manufacturing plant for World War II aircraft ‘Douglas C-54 Skymasters’ where almost 655 C-54s planes were manufactured. The field attached with the plant was known as Douglas Airport and the manufactured planes were flown.

The Douglas Airport or airfield featured four runways each with a length of 1,700 meters. After the conclusion of the second world war, the Douglas Company’s contract expired and it chose to work only at its headquarters in Santa Monica, California. The name of the airport was changed to ‘Orchard Field Airport’ with IATA code ‘ORD’ after the departure of Douglas Company.

The Orchard Field Airport was then utilized by the United States Air Force during the Korean War due to which no commercial flights occurred at the airport. The airfield became home to US Air Force 62nd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron which operated North American F-86 Sabres from 1950 to 1959.

The airport slowly gained momentum in commercial business starting in 1960 due to which the need for a fighter base declined. With that, the US Air Force reserve fighter base was closed on 1st April 1997 under the agreement between the Department of Defense, and the O’Hare City authority.

After the termination of the fighter base, the airport went through various advancements for scheduled commercial flights. O’Hare became the first airport to use the jet bridge in 1958 and also use slip-form paving for concrete and strong runways.

The name was finalized O’Hare Airport by the city in 1949 to honor Edward ‘Butch’ O’Hare. Edward was the U.S. Navy’s first flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient in the second World War.

The O’Hare Airport initiated scheduled passenger service in 1955 with a project investment of over US$25 million . The airport started to lure airlines after the first dedicated international terminal was inaugurated in August 1958. After that, the area expanded to 7,200 acres (2,900 ha) with the introduction of new terminals, parking, an apron, aircraft hangars, and various other infrastructural facilities. 

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 were introduced on January 1, 1962, and were designed by C.F. Murphy and Associates.

One of the biggest achievements of the airport was the first scheduled jet operation. American Boeing 707 conducted flights from New York to Chicago to San Francisco on 22nd March 1959. Midway International Airport, the airport next to O’Hare, was facing issues with limited infrastructure as it did not have a required runway to accommodate Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 aircraft. With that, O’Hare airport became the center of attraction for various airlines and served over 10 million passengers annually becoming the world’s busiest airport.

The airport went through various developments after the passage of US airline deregulation in the 1980s. Trans World Airlines (TWA) terminated its hub from O’Hare and shifted towards St. Louis. Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWA) also moved toward Minneapolis; however, Delta kept its hub in Chicago for some time. Delta closed its hub at Chicago Airport in the 1990s due to the expense of O’Hare Airport. 

O’Hare airport experienced delays from the late 1980s due to inefficient runway layout as only one new runway (4R/22L) was added in 1971. The three pairs of angled runways of O’Hare airport allowed takeoffs into the wind; however, they were dangerous and inefficient .

In the 1990s, the airport got the title of one of the worst-performing airports in the United States due to the increment in delayed flights. The airport went through O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP) after CDA committed to it in 2001. The financial issues in 2008 delayed the OMP completion and the construction of the sixth and final parallel runway (9C/27C) initiated in 2016.

The parallel runway project will be completed in November 2020 and the extension of runway 9R/27L is scheduled to complete in 2021.

United Airlines and American Airlines operate their flights from the base at O’Hare International Airport today. After the initialization and completion of the first two phases of OMP, the airport saw a reduction in system delays by almost 57 percent. With that, the airport ranked 14th position for maintaining on-time performance in 2017 among the top 30 U.S. airports. The initial project cost estimation was US$6.6 billion however, it escalated beyond US$10 billion by 2019.

As of 5:40 p.m., 852 flights had been canceled at O'Hare in the past 24 hours, with average delays of 28 minutes. At Midway, 279 flights have been canceled, with average delays of less than 15 minutes.

It's been a frustrating day for Chicago resident Schellone Byrd. First his flight to Atlanta was canceled and his rebooked 10:55 a.m. plane was delayed. He also almost didn't even make it to the airport

"The ride share started out at 58 dollars," Byrd said. "It kicked it out then it jumped to 156 dollars. I had no option but to take it, so it's pretty much price gauging because of the weather."

The area's latest blast of winter did a number of Chicago's airports and most of anyone trying to fly anywhere Friday.

Carrie Scharbo hoped to get to her native palm Beach for her daughter's equestrian tournament and to celebrate her son's 15th birthday.

"We were delayed, flights canceled this morning," Scharbo said. "Booked another one for tomorrow and we just came here on the off chance we could get out today."

The storm has also created slick conditions on Chicago-area roads, especially expressway ramps.

ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Tracy Butler said the snow has tapered off until about 3 p.m. The snow will then return from 3-7 p.m., with a rain/snow line reaching up to Interstate 88.

From 7 p.m. until midnight, windy conditions will return, with the snow likely to expand across the area. ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Larry Mowry said an additional 2 to 6 inches of snow is possible from afternoon and evening snow.

The falling snow will start to ease Saturday morning, but windy conditions could still lead to poor travel conditions.

You already know what the Air Jordan 1 is all about. It’s a staple of sneaker culture.

The Air Jordan 1, however, wasn’t destined to be an all-time classic.

When it first debuted in 1985, there weren’t grand expectations. Instead, there were critics loudly chirping about Nike’s decision to give Michael Jordan a large sneaker deal before he played a single game and the rookie’s choice to sign with a company that, up to that point, was best known for running shoes.

Jordan quickly flipped the narrative on the court by winning Rookie of the Year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 5.9 APG in 1985 while donning Air Jordan 1s. MJ’s meteoric rise propelled the Air Jordan 1, resulting in nationwide demand and making the sneakers a must-have for hoop heads.

Introducing the Air Jordan 1 'Chicago'

The AJ1 "Chicago" was inspired by the high top Air Jordan 1 original colorway, first released in 1985. The shoe harkens back to a time when shoe boxes were often lost in inventory stockrooms, only to be found again years later.

Before the advent of sophisticated inventory systems, products were typically tracked with pen and paper. Human error was inevitable and frequently resulted in shoe boxes with mismatched lids.

The AJ1 Chicago is a throwback to this era, drawing inspiration from what an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 would look like if found decades later in a dusty stock room.

According to the Jordan design team, the goal of this shoe was to create a “time travel moment,” especially for a new generation of consumers. The process of buying a shoe today is very different from what it was like in the 80s. This sneaker attempts to capture that lost and found feeling, giving consumers a taste of what a box-fresh, vintage AJ1 would have looked like back in the day.

Lost & Found: A Unique Design

The Jordan Brand team responsible for developing the AJ1 Chicago obsessed every detail of the shoe’s design to bring this nostalgic story to life. Jordan designers studied multiple pairs of original AJ1s in varying states of distress to capture the nuances of the shoe’s look, described as having “light to no wear but with materials that sat for years in a box and didn’t withstand the test of time.”

The Inspiration

Ultimately, the team focused on several key design elements of the Chicago to drive forward the AJ1’s history. The image below shows the updated 2022 Chicago (top) next to an original 1985 Air Jordan 1 (bottom) to highlight the sneaker's inspiration.

A Closer Look

The 2022 Chicago colorway comes with a range of key design features influenced by the OG AJ1.

Bigger Swoosh

Ankle Collars

One of the most common signs of age on an original pair of AJ1s was a cracked and faded ankle collar. The black leather material wrapped around the ankle collars had a tendency to dry out and crack over a period of time, and often would begin to flake off with wear and handling.

The ankle collars on the new Chicago mimic this weathered appearance and give a nod to collectors who understand the amount of care necessary when handling a pair of 1985 originals.

Similar to the ankle collars, the rubber cupsole of an original AJ1 would age over time, turning into a light yellow hue. The Chicago pays homage to this look.

According to the Jordan Brand Design team, when shoes are left in a box for years and not properly maintained, they’re going to crack, yellow and pigment. The goal with the AJ1 Chicago was to hint at this subtle aging look, while adding tactility to the shoe’s sole.

Aged Leather

Leather is a natural material that requires ongoing maintenance. With years of neglect in a stockroom leather starts to dry out and leave visible signs of aging. The Chicago offers hints of dryness in the leather, most noticeably in the toe area and side panels. But the effect is merely aesthetic.

Jordan Brand designers took note of the condition in the leather from several older pairs of AJ1s. Observing how some of the oils in the leather came to the surface and created different visible effects, they recreated a rich look using premium materials that will last longer for today’s consumers.

OG Box & Lid

In a nod to the “lost and found” nature of the colorway, the updated Chicago comes with a mismatched box lid that speaks to the shoes being misplaced in back rooms and basements.

Designers added extra details both inside and outside the box that serve as a shout out to shoe promotions created once upon a time. According to the Jordan design team, every detail should be recognizable to those who grew up back in those days, while giving new sneakerheads a chance to experience what it was like.

One such example is the inclusion with every pair of a vintage receipt meant to replicate actual receipts that found their way into the hands of collectors from deadstock shoeboxes. The receipt calls up images of how sneakers used to be acquired in analog fashion before the internet age.

Retelling the Story

As a result of the many unique design choices, not every pair of updated AJ1s will look exactly the same. The subtle differences in each sneaker reinforce the throwback theme of this colorway.

Jordan designers took an approach that gave the 2022 Air Jordan 1 Chicago “an edge, a narrative and a connection.” They wanted a look and feel that came with a history tied back to something many consumers may not even be aware of. Ultimately, whether old school or new generation, Jordan Brand wants every consumer to see beauty in the story behind the shoe.

The sneaker dropped on November 19, 2022. The Chicago will be available in full family sizing.

Delta is changing how it boards passengers starting May 1

Delta Air Lines is changing its boarding process beginning May 1 in an effort to speed up loading passengers onto planes. 

If you're flying on the airline, you'll have to know what zone number you're in to board in the correct sequence. The move is hardly innovative, experts say, and instead reflects a return to the traditional way of boarding passengers followed by most airlines. 

That's because Delta is introducing numbered boarding zones for all flights, meaning that customers will have a zone number assigned to them instead of boarding groups labelled by airline status or fare class, such as "Sky Priority." The airline stressed that boarding orders will not change, but the group names will.

When Delta introduced its branded fare boarding process in 2018, it called zone boarding "a thing of the past." But the airline is now reverting to the traditional way of boarding people, in what some experts call an unusual move for an innovative airline.

Customers who need more assistance will still pre-board as usual before passengers in Zone 1, which will comprise Delta One and First Class customers. Zone 2 will include Diamond Medallion Members and Delta Premium Select ticket holders. 

Delta Comfort+ customers will board in Zone 3, followed by Sky Priority in Zone 4, according to a  chart  on the airline's website. Zone numbers will go up to 8, when basic economy passengers will board. 

Delta said the change is small, but could make the process easier for infrequent fliers and non-English speakers who only have to listen for a number to know when it's their turn to board. The change will also make the process less stressful for gate agents, Delta added. 

Still, some travel experts questioned whether the change would meaningfully speed up the boarding process. 

"They're not changing who boards when or the sequence," Clarkson University professor John Milne, an expert on airline boarding, told CBS MoneyWatch. "All they are changing is the names of what passenger group boards next." 

In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, Delta said the "simple change" will "provide customers more clarity into the boarding sequence and make the boarding process more intuitive—especially for infrequent travelers and/or customers who might face a language barrier at the gate."

Delta added, "Numbered zones will also align more closely with our joint venture and international partners, providing international customers a more simplified, consistent experience when traveling on mixed-metal itineraries. "  

CEO Ed Bastian addressed the change on the company's first quarter earnings call Wednesday. "When you have a number and you're standing in line, we are all trained to know when it's our turn," Bastian said.

Superficial changes?

The change is fairly superficial, Milne said, noting there are other changes Delta and its competitors could make to boarding processes that would make them more efficient. 

The airline still prioritizes passengers with airline status or who paid for a higher class fare on a particular flight. Instead, it would be more efficient to board passengers based on where on the aircraft they are seated, Milne said. 

For example, boarding window seat customers in the back half of the plane first would speed up the process. "That way you would minimize some of the congestion," he said. 

Delta instead assigns passengers to boarding groups based on their loyalty to the airline and ticket prices. 

Travel expert Scott Keyes also emphasized that the change does little to meaningfully improve or expedite the boarding process. All Delta is doing is reverting to the traditional way of boarding passengers and scrapping its branded boarding process that began in 2018, he noted.

"The fact that they've reverted to numbered zones, like those employed by virtually all other airlines, speaks volumes," Keyes said. "Traditionally, Delta has been seen as the innovative airline and others have followed suit. In this case, Delta's innovation didn't pan out, and they've been forced to once again mimic American and United's boarding processes."

To be sure, any move that would actually speed up passenger boarding could give an airline a leg up on competitors.

"Speeding up the boarding process by even 10 minutes can prevent delays, and if sustained, allow airlines to add an additional daily flight to the schedule," Keyes said.

The airline posted a $37 million first-quarter profit on Wednesday and said demand for air travel is strong heading into the busy summer travel season. Travelers are flocking to book trips despite a string of recent air safety incidents, including a panel blowing off a Boeing 737 Max aircraft during an Alaska Airlines flight.

Don was recognized for his extraordinary contributions to Delta and the industry along with Earl Exum, former V.P. of Mature Commercial Engines of Pratt & Whitney, who was honored posthumously.  

“I’ve been really fortunate and blessed to work with amazing mentors, technicians and engineers throughout my career, so this award really isn’t for me, it’s for all of the great people I got to work with,” Mitacek said.

Business travel picks up, bolstering outlook for US airlines

CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. airlines have enjoyed a travel boom for the past three years, but until this past quarter, big-spending corporate travelers had been largely missing.

Those customers are now back in full force, boosting profits for carriers in what is normally a weak quarter for results. The U.S. airlines that have so far released results – including Delta, United and Alaska Air – all reported a sharp rebound in flying for business purposes.

On Thursday, Alaska Air said increased spending by technology companies like Amazon.com and Microsoft in the March quarter increased revenue from corporate travel to pre-pandemic levels. For most of the last year, the carrier’s business bookings were stuck around 75% of the 2019 levels.

The corporate travel increase helped the Seattle-based carrier post a strong performance in the March quarter, traditionally its weakest period of the year.

In an interview, Alaska’s chief financial officer, Shane Tackett, said demand would keep growing, as spending by technology companies has not fully recovered.

“Technology companies on the West Coast are the most valuable companies in the world,” he said. “They are going to travel to see their customers and to sell software.”

Similarly, United said it recorded some of the biggest corporate bookings in its history this year, thanks to demand from professional services, tech and industrial companies.

Business trips generated as much as half of passenger revenue at U.S. airlines before the global health crisis, according to industry group Airlines for America.

But the sluggish recovery forced carriers dependent on business traffic to rework their network and chase vacationers. Pricing power fell due to excess industry capacity in key leisure markets.

United shifted more seats to markets like Florida and Las Vegas in the first quarter following losses in the same quarter last year, while American Airlines reset the terms of its contract with big corporate customers.

While the pickup in business travel is largely linked to people returning to offices, airline executives say corporate clients are loosening their purse strings due to the improved economic outlook.

Delta last week said 90% of its corporate customers are planning to either maintain or increase travel volumes in the current quarter. The Atlanta-based airline, which saw a double-digit year-on-year increase in corporate sales in the first quarter, expects to deliver record corporate revenue in the second half of this year.

Alaska raised its 2024 earnings forecast as it expects profit from business travelers to offset higher fuel costs.

United’s chief financial officer, Michael Leskinen, on Wednesday said the recovery in business traffic was “wind in our sails,” saying that while current trends were strong, “the future is even brighter.”

Airline executives predict a record summer and even more demand for first class

While the aviation industry has been in the spotlight lately for a host of safety issues , airline executives say there is no sign of slowing demand for flights.

United Airlines "as an airline and as an industry" will carry record numbers of travelers this summer, the carrier's Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said on an earnings call Wednesday. Alaska Airlines on Thursday forecast 2024 earnings ahead of estimates as the airline expands capacity 3% over last year.

"Demand continues to be strong, and we see a record spring and summer travel season with our 11 highest sales days in our history all occurring this calendar year," Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said on his company's call a week earlier. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines report results on April 25.

Air travel demand has been resilient despite persistent inflation that has weighed on household budgets, as well as a spate of high-profile safety issues that have sparked congressional hearings and have become the butt of jokes from late-night television to TikTok.

Public and regulatory scrutiny of the industry increased after a door plug blew out of a Boeing 737 Max 9 in January. That sparked a new safety crisis for Boeing and slowed its deliveries of new planes to airlines.

Airlines, which make the bulk of their money in the spring and summer, have also been grappling with higher costs of fuel and labor, with fresh contracts giving pilots and other workers large raises after years of stagnant pay.

Nonetheless, demand for international trips and rebounding corporate travel have helped boost global carriers. Both Delta and United's second-quarter forecasts outpaced Wall Street estimates. Customers appear willing to pay up for first class and other cabins above standard coach, executives said.

Nocella said on the earnings call Wednesday that the airline could further segment the front of the plane, much like United and other airlines have done with coach . "You have many teams of people working on how to further innovate and provide more and more choice and to monetize that choice on our behalf, obviously, in the future," he said.

Delta, meanwhile, has said premium revenue growth has outpaced sales from standard coach for years.

The flight was Finnair but there was no indications anywhere that the checkin was for Finnair also. There was no one to ask. I think at a minimum they should list the code shares so people don’t stand in the wrong line for an hour.

I booked the flight with Finnair, which made the arrangements for downloading a boarding pass unnecessarily complicated. I wouldn't do that again. Instead I'd book direct with AA.

Had a nice flight to London on BA will fly with them again in the future

Finnair cancelled my flight 12 hours prior to leaving for Helsinki. They stated there were mechanical problems. I had to scurry around to find a new flight that would meet my needs for arrival in Helsinki. Luckily I was able to find alternate transportation through Lufthansa/United.

My biggest problem was the flight from KEF to DUB was delayed, which caused me to miss my connecting flight in DUB and we were forced into an unplanned 10-hour layover in DUB. The seat size was more like a domestic than an international flight. In fact, i would compare the ammenities, quality and service to a short hall ryan air flight, which was unexpected for an international flight. The plane was extremely hot so sleeping was difficult. My biggest complaint was that they are very strict on carry on luggage only allowing it to weigh 10kg/22lb. I try to limit myself to a carryon so i don't have to mess with bagage claim, but the wieght restriction made it impossible. I have never had a carry on weight restriction (at least enforced) on an international flight. Will not be including them in future searches.

Appalling! The flight was delayed by 3.5 hours and the American Airlines staff at the airport where nit very helpful. Once boarded, the flight crew were unhelpful, the food was poor and the aircraft was tatty.

Overall, terrific service, accommodations, and experience. Only reason comfort was rated lower was because it was difficult to keep a comfortable sleeping position for the overnight flight, but I also had an economy seat.

Very cramped seats in economy, difficult to get comfortable with your legs and feet and back. The seat width is ok but I’m average size. Food is HORRIBLE. Crew is friendly. Delays and very tight connections made it tough for navigating. We would have missed our connecting flight if it wasn’t delayed too. This was an American Airlines flight. The crew were very unhappy and quite grumpy. Abrupt to the point of being rude. The food was dreadful. Indeed the breakfast was in edible. I will avoid AA at all costs in the future.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

Fare was much lower with a layover in London as I was able avoid numerous landing fees that would have been added to the ticket price had I booked a direct flight to Amsterdam.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.
